These Are the Best Bike Trips in the World
Where will you ride in 2020?
Every ride has the potential to take you someplace new. And when you devote your vacation days to do nothing but eat, drink, and ride your way around an unfamiliar destination, that experience becomes next level. There’s really no better way to connect with the sights, sounds, and culture of a region than on two wheels.
When it comes to the actual planning, you could DIY, but between transporting gear and scouting routes, lodging, and sustenance, you’re usually better off going with an outfitter that has insider intel and experience with the unique logistics of bike travel.
While there are thousands of outstanding cycling trips to choose from, only some are worthy of a Bicycling Travel Awards designation. Here’s how we determined the winners.
Our well-traveled editors looked at hundreds of bike tour companies from around the world and scrutinized their itineraries for average tour size, traveler reviews, value, custom options, and quality of the rental fleet. We also considered timeless essentials like staff training and logistical expertise that differentiate the best from the rest. We surveyed industry insiders for insight on what’s hot right now—off-the-beaten-track destinations like Slovenia and Colombia , the wild popularity of gravel riding, and a wider range of self-guided trips for intrepid or budget-conscious travelers.
Whether you want to ride the iconic climbs of the Tour de France , catch fall foliage in New England , or whoop it up on unspoiled Arizona gravel, these are the absolute-best, unmissable, bucket-list bike trips on the planet. Get out there!
Courtesy REI
Best out-there adventure, rei: vietnam cycling.
This 12-day cultural excursion goes from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi. Daily rides range from 12 to 40 miles, mostly on quiet country roads that traverse lush jungle, rice paddies, shrimp farms, and rustic seaside villages. The schedule is intentionally loose, with plenty of time for local experiences and exotic sites along the way—you can unclip to snorkel in the South China Sea, wander an 8th-century Cham temple, or explore important Vietnam War sites like My Lai. Though the mileage is modest, some burly dirt climbs will make you extra hungry for the rice noodles and other delicacies that magically integrate flavors from France, China, and Thailand. BYO bike or rent a Trek e-bike or hardtail mountain bike. 12 days / 188 to 191 miles / $3,699 REI members ($4,099 nonmembers) / Recreational-plus
YOU MIGHT ALSO LIKE Butterfield & Robinson: Japan Biking Meander along the Sea of Japan on the rustic Noto Peninsula—expect relaxing hot springs, abundant tea ceremonies, and peaceful ancient shrines . 8 days / 193 miles / $9,495 / Recreational-plus
BEST FAMILY TRIP
Western spirit: redwood national park family trip.
Anchored around the world-famous redwood groves in northern California, this excursion offers opportunities for adventure and family bonding that are appropriately larger than life. Much of the riding is on gravel, doubletrack, or car-free roads. Highlights include picnic lunches on seaside bluffs, tidal exploration on remote beaches, swimming in the Smith River, and hikes through the profoundly Instagram-worthy forest. Kids can peel off each day for a cool side activity, giving parents an option to extend their riding. Bring your own bikes or rent from Western Spirit. 5 days / 23 to 75 miles / $1,295 / Recreational
YOU MIGHT ALSO LIKE Backroads: Sweden to Denmark Family Bike Tour Visit castles, fjords, and horse farms; watch the sun set at midnight; and end in one of the greatest cycling cities on earth. 6 days / 33 to 136 miles / $5,499 / Recreational-plus
BEST LATIN AMERICA
Thomson Bike Tours: Trans-Colombia Challenge
Ride the home peaks where many of the world’s top Grand Tour riders—mountain goats like Egan Bernal and Nairo Quintana —honed their talents. You’ll crank out more than 70,000 feet of Andes vertical in eight days of riding. And you’ll walk away with bragging rights after conquering what might be the world’s longest paved climb: the famed Alto de Letras , which rises 10,500 feet over 50 miles. In fact, you’ll do it twice—once from each side. It’s not all hardcore climbing: You’ll pedal through coffee plantations and Andean jungle, and get a taste of cycling-crazy Medellín. If you don’t feel like flying with your bike, rent a Canyon Ultimate CF SL with disc brakes and Di2. 8 days / 567 miles / $3,995 / Advanced
YOU MIGHT ALSO LIKE Trek Travel: Colombia Bike Tour Rides range from 16 to 89 miles with a focus on cultural immersion, including visits to coffee roasters and an avocado plantation (and you still get to climb Alto de Letras). 6 days / 305 miles / $3,399 / Intermediate
BEST FOOD AND WINE
Duvine: best of bordeaux + burgundy.
This luxury trip hits two of the world’s most legendary wine regions. In Bordeaux, spin through vineyards, stop for lunch at a UNESCO World Heritage site, and enjoy VIP tastings at famed producers like Château Mouton Rothschild and Château Lynch-Bages, where you can blend your own wine. Then it’s on to Burgundy, where you’ll dine in the private wine cellar of a grand cru producer, and get private tastings at boutique pinot noir and chardonnay producers. Along the way enjoy five-star accommodations and work up an appetite as you pedal through bucolic villages and 800-year-old castle ruins. The price includes a rental Cannondale, like a Synapse Carbon Pro Disc or Neo e-bike. 8 days / 104 to 148 miles / from $9,995 / Recreational-plus
YOU MIGHT ALSO LIKE Butterfield & Robinson: Napa & Sonoma Luxe Biking Private Private tastings, gourmet meals, and luxury hotels in America’s most famous wine regions. 5 days / 139 miles / $8,695 / Intermediate
BEST HIDDEN EUROPE
Tourissimo + ride & seek bicycle adventures : friuli venezia giulia and slovenia.
This tour-outfitter collaboration takes you to two exotic and distinctive cultures. Meander north from the Adriatic and explore Friuli—known for producing many of Italy’s best white wines—where locals speak their own language. Cross into Slovenia, a darling of travel hot lists for good reason: In the foothills of the Alps, you’ll enjoy rustic meals, quiet and undulating roads, views of verdant valleys and snowcapped mountains, and a culture that’s exotic without being impenetrable. In six days of riding, you’ll cover 195 miles—leaving plenty of time for immersive sightseeing, long lunches, and multisport diversions like river rafting, hiking, and paragliding. BYO bike or choose from a fleet of Bianchi road, hybrid, or e-bikes. 8 days / 195 miles / $4,195 / Recreational-plus
YOU MIGHT ALSO LIKE Eat Sleep Cycle Tour of Ireland’s West Coast Expect rural roads, seaside villages, emerald hills, and more than a few quality pints. 7 days / 300 miles / $2,775 / Intermediate/advanced
BEST MOUNTAIN BIKING
Sacred rides: wild & sacred seattle.
This week of mountain biking and dirt culture features iconic riding in the Cascades wedged between two local mountain bike festivals (close your eyes and conjure up food trucks, a beer garden, and spirited group rides). For the first half of the trip, you’ll stay in a boutique hotel in downtown Seattle , hit farm-to-table restaurants, and ride singletrack in lush woodland. The second act unfolds in the Teanaway Valley on the east side of the Cascades, where the landscape is drier and more exposed, the downhills rip, and the singletrack will test your technical skills. Decamp at a large mountain cabin (with a pool and hot tub) where the culinary vibe is campfire s’mores and BBQ. 2019 Giant Trances are included. 7 days / 154 miles / $2,695 / Intermediate/advanced
YOU MIGHT ALSO LIKE H+I Adventures: Cairngorms Adventure Scotland Highlands whisky and singletrack in the only Arctic ecosystem in the United Kingdom—keep an eye out for wild reindeer. 8 days / 100 to 115 miles / $1,958 / Intermediate
BEST EUROPEAN BASECAMP
The service course: the grand tour.
There’s something to be said for not having to repack your bag every morning. That’s especially true if your home base is the cycling paradise of Girona, Spain . Owned by retired pro Christian Meier and his wife, Amber, The Service Course offers carefully curated guided rides that will help you understand why so many pros live in this sunny Catalonian gem—empty farm lanes, perfectly twisting climbs, and coastal roads tracing the edge of the turquoise expanse of the Costa Brava. Start each day with an exquisite breakfast at La Fabrica—an eatery owned by the Meiers, and linger over afternoon coffee and pastry at their Espresso Mafia café. You can bring your own bike, but once you examine their rental stable, you might opt to spend your week on a dream bike from OPEN , Argonaut , Speedvagen , or Bastion. The tour includes dinners at some of the city’s best restaurants every night, four-star accommodations, and two massages. 7 days / 258 miles / $3,600 / Advanced
YOU MIGHT ALSO LIKE Eat Sleep Cycle: Classic Climbs of Girona You’re on your own for a few dinners but are otherwise fully supported in this by-cyclists-for-cyclists sampler of the best-known climbs near Girona. 6 days / 283 to 373 miles / $1,532 / Intermediate/advanced

BEST FOLIAGE
Backroads: vermont to quebec bike tour.
This part of the world gets magical when the stands of oak, birch, and maple turn color in September and October. This six-day cruise, which winds from Burlington, Vermont, up to Montreal, hits an endless procession of classic New England and French-Canadian highlights: technicolor foliage, covered bridges, cobbled city streets, glacier-carved valleys, small-town antique shops, and craft breweries. Along the way, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to sample such local delicacies as pure maple syrup, homemade sharp cheddar, hot apple cider, and duck foie gras. The mileage isn’t huge, but the terrain is never flat—consider yourself warned before you churn up Smuggler’s Notch. 6 days / 144 to 241 miles / starts at $3,499 / Intermediate
YOU MIGHT ALSO LIKE Pure Adventures: Quebec Bike Tour This self-guided adventure hits a foliage gold mine in late September to early October. 7 days / 175 miles / $1,085 / Intermediate
Grand Tours Project: Ride Every Kilometer of the Giro d’Italia
Here’s your chance to ride each stage of the most atmospheric Grand Tour on the same days the pros do. There will be predawn starts and episodes of existential suffering. But there will also be unforgettable moments—grinding up the legendary climbs of the Dolomites with the tifosi cheering you on, crossing all 21 Giro finish lines, an endless string of sublime coffee breaks, and VIP seating. Count on three weeks of full support and hearty Italian meals. For those who lack the time, fitness, or hubris to tackle the entire thing, you can sign up to ride three to nine stages in the same manner. BYO bike or rent a Bianchi Infinito CV Disc with Ultegra Di2. Roughly 2,200 miles total / Up to 24 days / $13,000 / Advanced
YOU MIGHT ALSO LIKE The Cyclist’s Menu: Alps Road This journey through the Alps from Italy into France dishes out 35,000 feet of climbing but a lot of memorable meals, too. 8 days / 373 miles / $3,850 / Advanced
Van Gogh Tours: Edam to Amsterdam
This leisurely, self-guided tour through the Netherlands will have you meandering on flat terrain along canals, through charming fishing villages, and into the friendly chaos of Amsterdam. The trip is based in the famous “cheese city” of Edam, where riders who feel comfortable navigating from detailed maps and daily directions are set up with charming hotel accommodations, a daily breakfast buffet, and a sweet Dutch city bike with gears and panniers. There’s plenty of time to linger over coffee, sample witbier from the vibrant Dutch craft beer scene, and eat enough Edam and Gouda to reach a rapturously semi-soft place. 3 days / ~80 miles / $635 / Recreational
YOU MIGHT ALSO LIKE Western Spirit: Bryce to Zion A fully supported trip that visits two iconic national parks and traverses single- and doubletrack in the scenic Southwest. 5 days / 111 miles / $1,495 / Intermediate
BEST PRO-LEVEL TREATMENT
In gamba: portugal—lisbon & the north.
Though In Gamba is known for unparalleled cycling experiences in Italy, there’s no getting around the company’s Portuguese roots—more than 80 percent of the staff come from Portugal, including the founder, João Correia (former pro racer and Bicycling publisher). And this trip—which heads north on quiet roads from Lisbon, through the wine lovers’ Douro Valley, and ends in Port—taps that native brain trust to show riders a side of the country that is at once authentic and luxurious. Everyone gets pro-style perks like a Pinarello Dogma F12 with eTap, daily bike wash , kit laundry, and massage from a real soigneur. And with more than 35,000 feet of climbing on the itinerary, that massage might be a lifesaver. 7 days / 380 miles / $7,950 / Advanced
YOU MIGHT ALSO LIKE In Gamba: Chianti Classico Nobody does pro-style pampering like In Gamba does, and this is the company’s most classic offering—a unique blend of exquisite riding, food, wine, and atmosphere. 7 days / 262 miles / $4,950+ / Intermediate/advanced
Editors’ Choice Top 10 Favorite Places to Ride Outside the U.S.
Whistler, British Columbia
Epic cross-country trail riding and a world-renowned bike park make this a bucket-list destination for mountain bikers.
Patagonia, Chile
Miles of challenging singletrack around glacial peaks in Torres del Paine National Park attract trail riders from all over the world.
Copenhagen, Denmark
Every rider should visit this cycling-mad city, where eight cycle superhighways connect 19 municipalities in the Capital Region.
Pyrenees, France
Less traveled (and less expensive) than the Alps, with as much Tour de France history.
Tuscany, Italy
Rolling hills, pastoral vistas, a laid-back ethos, and wine—lots of wine.
Amsterdam, The Netherlands
Biking is the preferred way of life here, thanks to an extensive network of cycling tracks.
New Zealand
Karangahake Gorge or Puketapu Loop on the North Island; Roxburgh Gorge or the Great Taste Trail on the South.
Highlights include majestic waterfalls, jagged glacial peaks, and emerald-green valleys—and of course, dramatic fjord vistas nearly everywhere you look.
Andermatt, Switzerland
The epicenter of Transalp MTB routes, with access to eight major Alpine passes, including the Furka, Gotthard, and Grimsel.
Navigate a dramatic 602 miles around the island on Cycle Route No. 1 past deep green rice paddies, tea plantations, and the breathtaking Taroko Gorge.
BEST GRAVEL
The cyclist’s menu: arizona gravel camp.
What do you get when a retired pro mountain biker and a professional chef pair up, hire some gregarious endurance cyclists (like Lael Wilcox ) as guides, and decamp to a tiny town nestled at 4,000 feet near the Mexican border? You get something resembling unpaved paradise—especially since the expansive public lands surrounding aptly named Patagonia, Arizona, are laced with empty gravel roads. Cycling tours
No big bus windows. No phone screen. No maps, walls or guidebooks. Just your wheels, the wind and the open road. That’s how we roll.
From pedalling through peaceful villages in Vietnam and Japan to cruising down epic, ever-changing landscapes in Jordan and Tanzania , our cycling tours allow you to really immerse yourself in a place and not just travel through it. Powered by nothing but your legs (and maybe a slice of biscotti and a couple of extra-strong cafés au lait), there’s a nice simplicity to cycling as well as plenty of adventures waiting for you off the saddle. Intrepid style cycling isn’t the Tour de France – you don’t get prizes for coming first and the lycra bodysuits are definitely optional – but we promise it’s a totally unique way to experience the world.
On most of our trips we use hardtail mountain bikes armed with front suspension. Depending on the country, we’ll use a mix of makes and models like Giant Talon and Trek X Caliber 5, but they’re pretty similar when it comes to form and function. Our bikes are serviced regularly by local experts who know their stuff, and any pesky broken chains or flat tyres can be fixed in a jiffy. You can usually bring your own bike, too (check our FAQs for the logistical info).
Riding a bike is good for you (even factoring in the odd gelato or Tuscan cellar door pitstop). But it’s also good for the environment. Like all our trips, our cycling tours are 100% carbon offset. Most of the transport is powered by the greenest energy of all: yours. We’ve been certified as the world’s largest travel B Corp, which means when you choose Intrepid, you’re traveling to improve the planet.
There’s something special about Intrepid travelers. You travel differently; you travel with purpose; you seek to leave a positive impact and give back to the people and places you visit. By traveling on an Intrepid cycling trip, you’ll directly support our Intrepid Foundation cycling partner, World Bicycle Relief . Donations provide school children, health workers and farmers in rural low-income communities with durable bicycles, research and mechanics training.
We run risk assessments on all our cycling trips and our leaders are specially trained to run cycling adventures, so you can rest assured you’re well taken care of. Our leaders are also trained in basic first aid, and we’ve got a support vehicle that follows the group in case of injury, inclement weather, unexpected and hazardous road conditions, or if you’d like to give your legs a rest.
The beauty of small group travel means our groups are small enough to allow you to ride at your own pace, but big enough to connect with others and create a good social vibe. Our maximum group size is 12 people, which we’ve found is a great number to let you get to know your fellow cyclists and also benefit from your leader’s knowledge and experience.
We think the best folks to show you around the heart of a destination is someone who lives there. That's why we work exclusively with local cycling leaders, which means you’ll really get to know the places you’ll be visiting. Our leaders are not just cycling enthusiasts, they’re also your travel guru, teacher and enthusiastic purveyor of local experiences.
Our local leaders are all cycling junkies, but they go through some pretty rigorous training before being allowed behind the handlebars of an Intrepid cycling tour. Each leader has undergone on-road supervision and knows how to do safety checks, basic repairs and emergency first-aid. But they’re still regular Intrepid leaders, which means they know the best local bars, cafes and hidden spots (not to mention handling all the logistical stuff). You just focus on the ride.
One of my favorite trips is Cycle Tuscany . We ride from the Apuan Alps down to the coast, followed by a dip in the Mediterranean and a picnic of fresh focaccia and tomatoes. We continue through rural villages, protected wildlife parks and sandy beaches all the way to the medieval jewel of the walled city of Lucca – and that's just in one day. Top tip for an Intrepid cycling trip: bring patience, an open heart and an open mind. Oh, and trust your legs!

What’s the range of cycling tours available?
Our cycling tours span the gamut of two-wheeled challenges: from a leisurely ride through Vietnam to cycling across landscapes of Cuba. Some of these trips include cycling as just one of a number of active adventures, others are more cycling focussed (ie. You’ll be riding almost every day).
Should I bring my own bike on a cycling trip?
To take the hassle out of preparing for your trip, we've included bike hire on all our dedicated cycling tours. Alternatively, you can bring your trusty bike from home. If you're bringing your own bike, make sure you let us know when booking so we can make sure your bike is appropriate for that particular tour. As always, check your Essential Trip Information.
Bringing your own bike – If you are a dedicated cyclist or just want to take your bike on a holiday, you can usually bring it along for the ride. You’ll need to box it up for transport on the plane.
The easiest way to do this is to go to your local bike shop and ask if they will do it for you (a fee may apply). They often have boxes on hand from old stock and have the tools to remove the pedals and secure your handlebars.
Airline fees will also apply, so check with your airline about costs. It's worth remembering not all trips will be able to accommodate your own bike, so let us know what you're planning at the time of booking.
Hiring a bike – The bikes we use are from proven brands, very well maintained, typically less than 3 years old (most are newer) and specifically chosen to suit the terrain you'll be cycling on the trip. They come in a full range of sizes from extra small to extra large and usually have front suspension, flat bars, and 27 gears.
The only thing you need to do is advise us of your height at the time of booking. We’ll handle the rest. If you'd like, you can always bring your own saddle (seat) or gel over-cover for comfort. If you want to use cleats, bring your pedals and shoes, too.
How do I fly with my bike?
All airlines will have their own rules and fees when transporting bikes. Make sure you contact the airline (preferably) before you pay for your flights to see what charges and requirements they have.
Before you depart, you must box your bike for transport. See our section ‘taking your own bike vs. hiring one’ for more information.
What do I have to carry while I ride?
On all of our cycling tours your accommodation is pre-booked and your luggage is transferred from one point to the next. All you have to carry is water, any snacks or gadgets you may want and a few layers to keep you dry and warm. A small, lightweight backpack may come in handy.
Do I need to pack anything special?
Helmets are compulsory on our cycling tours, so you can either bring your own or (to save on luggage space) buy one at a local bike shop once you arrive in-country. We also recommend you bring your own water bottle/hydration pack and closed shoes. You may also wish to bring Cycling shorts and (if you ride regularly at home) your own saddle and pedals. Many of our clients who do not ride regularly find a gel seat cover helpful in making the ride more comfortable. For more info on packing, check out the What to Pack section of your Essential Trip Information.
How fit do I need to be to do a cycling tour?
All you need to enjoy our cycling trips is the ability to ride a bicycle and a passion for seeing a destination on two wheels. That’s about it.
While there are occasionally longer days on some itineraries, the vast majority of our cycling days are between 19-37 miles and are done at a leisurely pace with plenty of opportunities to stop and enjoy the scenery or just take a break. Anyone with a reasonable level of fitness will get by with no trouble. Be sure to check the physical rating and description in the Essential Trip Information to make sure the trip suits your fitness level and skills.
Our cycling trips are done predominantly on sealed roads (with the odd unsealed section), but none of the trips require any specialist cycling skills. We’ve also researched extra riding routes in each of the destinations we visit, so if you want to stretch your legs a bit more, you can.
My partner is fitter than me, should I still book this trip?
To make our trips more accessible for cyclists of varying fitness levels and skills, most of our trips will have a support vehicle that follows the group. You can jump into the support vehicle any time you feel like taking a short (or long) break from riding. Many of our cycling trips also include the option to use an e-bike, an electric motor-assisted bike that’ll get you up any hill or allow you to zip along the flats with minimum effort.
What sort of safety precautions do you take?
We run risk assessments on each and every one of our cycling trips to make sure they’re up to scratch and your cycling leaders have personally ridden every inch of the itinerary in advance. We’ve assessed the road conditions, the level of traffic and any potential blackspots.
Our leaders are trained in cycling health and safety, as well as basic first aid, and we usually have a vehicle following us if an evacuation ever becomes necessary. We’ve also made sure our cycling tours depart during the milder months when the weather isn’t too hot or too cold, so the ride should be as pleasant (and safe) as possible.
Do I need special insurance for a cycling trip?
Not as a rule. Any injuries you might suffer while riding should be covered by the more reputable comprehensive policies (we can recommend some good brands if you’re unsure of what to get). It’s always important to double-check the fine print before departing on your trip and be aware that, like all Intrepid trips, travel insurance is compulsory on our cycling itineraries.

Books, eBooks & Guides
I’ve written a range of guidebooks and travelogues to read at your leisure, whether you’re preparing for a bike trip, living life on the road, or home and dreaming of the next big ride.
How To Hit The Road: A Beginner’s Guide To Cycle Touring & Bikepacking
First published in 2017 and updated in 2021, this book is my comprehensive newcomers’ introduction to the art of the bicycle-mounted adventure.
Every aspect of a cycle tour or bikepacking trip is covered in 34 chapters, split over three parts: pre-trip planning, initial execution, and adapting to the long haul.
As well as broad, practical advice, I’ve woven inspiring and reassuring anecdotes throughout the book – because getting away from the starting line isn’t about knowing everything, but having the confidence to begin.
Drawing on my personal experience of almost two decades of adventure cycling, more than 50 veteran riders from diverse backgrounds have also contributed to this guide, making it one of the most well-rounded introductions you’ll find to this radically liberating form of independent travel.
Whatever you’re planning and wherever you’re going, if it involves a bicycle and the spirit of adventure, How To Hit The Road has got you covered.
Janapar: Love, on a Bike
My first travelogue, originally published in 2013 and the subject of a successful crowdfunding campaign , telling the true story of my first 3½ years on the road.
This was far from your typical long-distance bike tour, however. From the cover blurb:
When twenty-three-year-old Tom Allen and his friends set off from their English village to cycle around the world, they were expecting physical hardship, extreme conditions and a serious case of culture shock. But the hours spent poring over maps could never have prepared them for the experience of life on the road: the petty squabbles, the extreme hospitality, the unexpected joys and dangers. And then Tom meets Tenny, a feisty Iranian-Armenian girl with dreams of her own, and hits a crossroad. Should he give up his grand plan for the girl he loves, or cycle off and risk missing out on the greatest adventure of them all?
Temporarily out of print (except in the USA), Janapar is still available as a Kindle ebook from all Amazon portals worldwide.

Gear for Glampacking: 14 Items to Make Bikepacking More Fun and Comfy
By Neil Beltchenko
Associate Editor & YouTube Host
Over the years, the team here at BIKEPACKING.com has learned a thing or two about creature comforts. After all, bikepacking is meant to be fun, and if you have a little extra room, it’s never a bad idea to bring something that makes your time at camp a bit more comfortable or enjoyable. In this piece, Neil shares 14 bikepacking luxuries…
PUBLISHED Sep 22, 2024
Over the years, I’ve wised up. My bikepacking trips used to focus on traveling light and fast, covering as much ground as possible while carrying as little as possible. But in that time, I’ve learned to bring a few creature comforts that make the journey more fun and comfortable. In this piece, I’m going to share 14 of those things, many of which several of us here on the BIKEPACKING.com team have come to love. Obviously, I’m not suggesting carrying everything on this list all at once, but adding one or two at a time can enhance your experience. Use this list as inspiration for your next trip to add a little more plush or fun to your adventure. Watch the video and read on for the written version with links to relevant resources.
For years, I’ve always used whatever I had on hand to make a pillow—stuffing a dry bag or stuff sack with extra clothes, using my shoes or rain layers under my sleeping pad, or just going without a makeshift option. As someone who tosses and turns a lot, those methods work, but they’re never the most comfortable. So, this summer, I decided to finally buy a pillow. I’ve been using the Nemo Fillo Elite , and it seems to do the trick. It weighs only 70 grams and packs down to the size of my palm, making it an easy addition to my sleep kit that I don’t even have to think about.
Lucas uses an older Sea To Summit Aeros , and Miles enjoys his Exped MegaPillow and Down Pillow. Logan brings two pillows on every trip, an inflatable AXL air from Big Agnes and the Hyperlite Stuff Pillow . Combined with a layer, the two make for one big fluffy pillow that he says was a game changer.
Ultralight Camp Chair
Ultralight camp chairs have become popular for bikepacking lately. While they’re certainly one of the bulkier additions you could add to your kit, they can also increase the camp comfort factor by providing back support and keeping you off the cold, wet ground. As Logan mentions, chairs are a great alternative to sitting on rocks, tree limbs, or stumps—which is especially great for an aging back. There are plenty of options out there, which you can find here .
Most of these chairs use segmented poles for the legs, with a rectangular fabric hammock suspended from the base poles to form the seat. Some of our favorites are the Helinox Chair Zero , the Big Agnes Skyline , and the Nemo Moonlight Elite , which I recently reviewed. While not as comfortable, a foam pad is also a great option to separate you and the ground, and I always bring one when I don’t have space for a chair.
Looking for some fun during those post-ride afternoons while bikepacking? A slingshot is one of our go-to ways to stay entertained at camp. It’s perfect for sharpening your target practice skills and maximizing lazy downtime. There are lightweight, packable options from talented builders like Sour, WZRD, Hunter Cycles, and Zodiac Engineering; find a few of those here . All you need is a target, a pebble or acorn, and your inner child.
After using ultralight down pants for two years, I’m convinced they’ve replaced long johns for good. While ideal for shoulder season bikepacking, I now take them on trips year-round here in Colorado. Like down jackets, their insulation-to-volume ratio and packability are unbeatable.
Several brands offer great lightweight options that rival the weight and compactness of other layers. I call mine “dance pants” because they make me want to dance! My Mountain Hardwear Ghost Whisperer pants have been fantastic, and Virginia loves her Montbell Lightweight down pants. Check out our full roundup here .
Games/cards/dice
Something I’ve been bringing on trips for a while now is a deck of cards. It’s lightweight, packable, and offers endless entertainment, especially for two players. My partner and I have an ongoing gin rummy game we play every time we go bikepacking. Lucas likes to bring Uno, and dice are another compact option—great for games like Yahtzee or Farkle. These are all perfect tent-friendly games, whether you’re winding down for the night, waiting out a storm, or just looking to pass time while having dinner around camp.
Music and Books
While it’s debatable whether music belongs in nature, there are times when bringing a small speaker feels right. When hanging out with friends around camp, chatting and listening to a few tunes—or a podcast—can make the experience more memorable; music often ties into important life moments. Though I’m against riding with a speaker, at camp, especially when you’re in a private spot with no one else around, I think it can be a nice touch. I usually use my iPhone, but JBL speakers are lightweight and packable.
For the trail, headphones are great, too. I absolutely love my Jabra Elite Eight Active headphones, and Logan is really into the Bose Ultra Open Earbuds . And if you prefer podcasts or audiobooks, those can be a nice addition.
Lights/lantern
Most people use a headlamp for bikepacking, as it’s a practical way to navigate camp at night or use for night riding if need be. Recently, I’ve been trying out lanterns on group trips for better lighting in the “kitchen” area during darker months or inside the tent. I’ve also strung up lights to create a cozy camp vibe. The Black Diamond Moji Lantern has become a favorite—rechargeable, fun, with various color options and great brightness. Inflatable solar-powered lights like the Mpowerd Luci lantern are also fantastic, and LED string lights, such as the Big Agnes Mountain Glow , add extra style and function.
Wide sleeping pads
Since having kids, I don’t have the opportunity to share a tent with my partner as much as I used to, but the team here at BIKEPACKING.com has been testing wider sleeping pads—both for couples and for solo use. Logan mentioned that he’s a fervent wide sleeping pad convert and uses the Nemo Tensor Wide , which offers five extra inches of width over a standard pad, preventing arms from falling off the sides.
Miles and Emily go even wider with double sleeping pads , ideal for some couples, though they’re heavier and take longer to inflate. Double pads cover most of the tent floor, eliminating gaps and providing flexibility for movement without slipping off.
Sleeping pad pump
Speaking of blowing up, electronic pumps that inflate and deflate sleeping pads are a newer piece of bikepacking/backpacking gear on the scene. I’ve been using the Flextail for a few weeks, and while it’s a nice alternative to blow-up bags or using your breath, it doesn’t inflate pads much faster. Plus, it’s another thing to charge or potentially break. Blowing up a pad with your breath can introduce moisture that leads to mold, bacteria, and insulation degradation, so a pump or pump sack is generally a better option despite the extra hassle.
One tried and true luxury that I absolutely love is bringing ultralight camp shoes . While I don’t pack them every time, whenever I do, I’m reminded why they’re so great. After a long day in stinky cycling shoes, slipping into lightweight camp shoes or sandals is incredibly refreshing. This summer, I picked up the Treadlabs Redway Sandals , which my podiatrist recommended for their arch support. They’re super lightweight and look great, too.
We’ve got a full resource on camp shoes , highlighting favorites like Bedrock Sandals . Miles even started using the PEdALED Foldable Bikepacking shoes and loves them.
Have you ever played light-up frisbee on a crisp desert night? It’s a magical experience! While full-size light-up frisbees can be a bit bulky for bikepacking, if you’re a frisbee aficionado, it’s worth making space for one. I’m a big fan of the Flash Flight light-up frisbee , loving its 185-gram weight and feel. But if that’s too much to pack, the $9 Waboba Wingman is a great, lightweight alternative. I’m sure there are other fun, compact options, so feel free to share any good suggestions you have in the conversation below.
I’m not much of an angler, but I’ve dabbled in fly fishing and even owned a Tenkara rod. Living and bikepacking in trout-rich areas, I’ve realized that bikes are perfect for reaching remote rivers, streams, and lakes that are tough to access on foot or by vehicle, offering secluded fishing spots. Many of our route networks offer fly-fishing opportunities, making it a great multi-sport adventure. Tenkara rods are fantastic for packing light, but some prefer a reel. The telescoping Reyr Gear collapsible fly rod is another solid option.
Upgraded Cook Kit
Minimal cook kits have come a long way, perfect for quickly boiling water or heating simple meals. However, a more elaborate cook kit offers greater flexibility for preparing intricate dishes. For example, you could bring a cast iron skillet for gourmet campfire cooking, a larger pan for pancakes, or a home-style dinner.
A collapsible frying pan is especially handy for those using panniers. I’ve used a GSI Outdoors model for years, and newer versions are even lighter. An upgraded cook kit means upgraded meals—oils, butter, and spices can enhance any camp dish. For some inspiration, check out The Bikepacking Cookbook .
Fancy Beverages
From freshly ground coffee to hand-muddled cocktails, savoring a hand-crafted drink in the backcountry is a special treat. While instant coffee has come a long way and is incredibly convenient, nothing compares to the taste of freshly ground coffee brewed with a pour-over, AeroPress , or the highly recommended Wacaco Picopresso Lucas reviewed and often uses. The same applies to cocktails—packing a bit of basil, agave, lime, and mezcal creates a delicious, easy-to-make drink that will likely taste even better in the great outdoors. Be creative, think outside the box, and bring along your favorite drink!
There are 14 items you can bring to elevate your bikepacking experience, ranging from kitchen essentials to sleep comfort and activities to keep you entertained. Bikepacking is all about having fun, and while these items aren’t strictly necessary, they can certainly add some flair and make your trip more enjoyable. Twin Cities Bike Tour Frequently Asked Questions
*Prices below only reflect advanced registration – see day-of-ride pricing
In order for us to keep the ride fun and safe here’s some important information about purchasing the right ticket. Make sure you scroll all the way down through eventbrite to see all the tickets and merchandise options.
How much does it cost?
Each route costs is slightly different. This is generally based on the additional supplies and resources we need for longer routes. We do our best to make sure our rides aren’t not cost prohibitive but also help financially support our organizations mission and initiatives across the state. Full details available on the registration page when live, but rates for adults range from $10-$50 for advanced registration. BikeMN members get a $5 discount off registration.
Are the routes capped or have different check-in times?
Yes! We do our best to keep the trails as uncongested as possible. In this spirit each route has a different check-in time. Please respect our efforts here by only checking in at the time stated in your registration.
Are the routes hard/hilly, and how long will it take me to finish?
We try to offer routes for everyone. Some may find even our shortest routes challenging depending on their abilities/experience and some may find our longest routes easy. For a 46 mile ride, if a rider travels an average of 12 mph and spends 20 minutes at 4 different rest stops it would take them 3 hours and 50 minutes of ride time plus 1 hour and 20 minutes of rest stop time for a total of 5 hours 10 minutes. So if you checked in right away at 7:30am for the 46 mile route you would be finished by 1:40pm. Some riders will go considerably faster and take more time at rest stops and others will go slower and take less time at rest stops. Regardless we do ask riders pay attention to the start/end times of rest stop operations and note that SAG service ends at 3pm sharp so we can relieve our volunteers.
How far is it between rest stops?
For the 46 Mile Route: Rest stop #1 – Twin Cities in Motion (Mile 7) Rest stop #2 – Lake Phalen (Mile 15 / 8 miles from #1) Rest stop #3 – Dual Citizen (Mile 24 / 7 miles from #2) Rest stop #4 – Venture Bikes (Mile 34 / 9 miles from #3) Finish: Wabun Park – 11 miles from Venture Bikes
So what are the rest stops hours ? – please plan to check-in at a time that matches your needs for rest stops and pace of ride.
NOTE: You can begin riding any time after you check-in! The ride ends at 2:30PM – All SAG support and finish area refreshments will end at this time.
Wabun Park Start/Finish: 7am-3pm Twin Cities in Motion: 8am-11am (46 Mile Route Only) Lake Phalen: 8:15am-12pm (46 Mile Route Only) Dual Citizen: 10am-1pm (46 Mile Route Only) Venture Bikes: 8:15am-1pm (this rest stop serves both the 20 mile and 46 mile) Bread & Pickle: 8am-11am (20 Mile Route Only) Loons Coffee: 10am-11am (Short Route Only)
What about day-of-ride registration?
You’ll always save by registering in advance but day of ride registration will be available via cash or card.
- 46 Mile Route (if not sold out) $60.00
- TCBTwenty $40
- Short Route $15
ETIQUETTE – SAFETY – FUN!
Etiquette – A little courtesy goes a long way.
- Faster riders are more than welcome to ride in the road adjacent to the trail routes if they’re comfortable. No roads are closed to automobile traffic. IMPORTANT NOTE ON-ROAD ROUTES ARE NOT PHYSICALLY MARKED – MANY PLACES (shepard Rd./etc) WE DO NOT RECOMMEND – make sure you download the ride with GPS links if you want navigation.
- Faster riders should be patient/courteous with slower and especially younger riders. Please wait until it’s safe to pass and give warning whenever possible via audible “on your left” or ringing bells.
- Remember to follow all bicycle traffic laws and set a good example for other riders.
- Remember that trails are open to the general public and many are designated for two-way travel. Don’t clog intersections and keep your eyes ahead of you to watch for oncoming trail traffic.
- Respect and appreciate volunteers and partners. Everyone is trying to put on a great Twin Cities Bike Tour and as a first year going into both of the Twin Cities we know there will be somethings to improve on.
Safety – In addition to following the aforementioned bicycle laws, practicing good safety habits will keep you and your fellow Twin Cities Bike Tour riders safe.
- Always follow the direction of one-way trails – do NOT ride against traffic.
- Make sure your bicycle is in good working order. An ABC quick check can go a long way to prevent incidents stemming from mechanical issues. Carry a correct sized spare tube with you even if you don’t know how to change a tube so a Ride Marshal or rest stop mechanic can assist you. Don’t know what size to get? Head to your local bike shop with your bike and they’ll assist you.
- Make sure YOU are in good working order. Take a few bike rides leading up to the event. Know your pace and stretch before and after riding.
- Wear a proper fitting helmet. Even when exercising great caution, serious crashes can still occur. Mitigate the risk of serious injury by protecting your brain.
- The forecast always calls for unpredictability when it comes to Minnesota weather. Remember that roads are the most slippery just as it begins to rain and days with exceptional heat will require more hydration and more rest periods, but recall that the Twin Cities Bike Tour rolls day or shine except for the most extreme weather.
Fun – The key to getting many of us on our bikes for the first or 1000th time is Fun!
- Decorate your bike
- Wear a fun costume
- Crank up the tunes
- Bring the family, friends, neighbors and co-workers and start a new fall Twin Cities tradition!
Dude, where do I park my car? Is there transit?
If at all possible we encourage both riders and volunteers to bike to the event. Even parking a mile away and biking to the start will help reduce automobile congestion at the beginning and end of the ride. Both Northrup Elementary (4315 S 31st Ave, Minneapolis, MN 55406) and Keewaydin Elementary (5209 30th Ave S, Minneapolis, MN 55417) have each allowed our riders to park in their lots and are only a two miles ride to Wabun Park. You’ll also find there is lots of parking in the nearby neighborhoods as well north of the park. PLEASE NOTE: Much of the immediate parking around Minnehaha Park and Wabun park are paid lots.
You can also get on the Blue Line light rail at Fort Snelling park-and-ride and get off at the 50th and Minnehaha station. Only 1/2 mile to Wabun Park.
DO NOT PARK AT THE VETERANS HOME
Where do the proceeds from the event go? All Routes Lead to a More Bike-Friendly Minnesota
Rides like this cost a lot to put on even with the help of many gracious sponsors. But all of our proceeds raised from the Twin Cities Bike Tour directly contributes to improving walkability and bikeability in communities across Minnesota. The ride benefits the Bicycle Alliance of Minnesota (a 501(c)(3) nonprofit – federal tax ID number is 41-1719332). Thank you for your support!

The best things to see and do on a West Coast road trip
Cycle through history and nature on the West Coast Wilderness Trail while enjoying the best road trip stops along the way. Photo / Eleanor Hughes
The perfect spot for both a road trip and a bike ride , as long as you have some sort of wheels, the West Coast is an ideal summer getaway, writes Eleanor Hughes
A desire to cycle the West Coast Wilderness Trail and see never explored Karamea, morphed into a road trip from Auckland. With my mountain bike in the back of my Kia Rio and plans to hire an e-bike for my travelling, we crossed the Cook Strait at midday. Follow in our tracks as we make the most of a West Coast road trip.

Picton to St Arnaud – 128km, 1.5 hours
Stop over at the alpine village of St Arnaud where Lake Rotoiti, encircled by bush-covered mountains, is idyllic. Water taxi from Kerr Bay across its 7.5km length to Lakehead and return on the flat Lakehead Track. Black-trunked beech trees and verdant ferns provide shade with continuous lake views and shingle beaches to enjoy.
For panoramas over St Arnaud, Lake Rotoiti and forever green ranges, climb St Arnaud Range Track through beech forest to Parachute Rocks, at 1400m. A heart-pounding, steep, rocky trail to the 1650m range rewards with a scenic plateau dotted with small lakes and jutting, zigzagging ranges beyond.
St Arnaud to Ross – 350km, 4.5 hours
Heading for Ross, we detour to Hokitika Gorge . Viewed from a flat trail, flowing between narrow, greyish-white rock banks, Hokitika River’s turquoise hue is astonishing.
Tiny Ross began the West Coast’s gold-mining journey. Through bush and about town, the Water Race Walkway encompasses buildings and mining relics from the 1860s gold rush days.
West Coast Wilderness Trail – 4 days
Drive from Ross to Hokitika (29km, 22 minutes) and shuttle back with a cycling company to Treetop Walkway to begin the bike ride.
West Coast Wilderness grade 2/3 cycle trail takes riders from Ross to Greymouth through West Coast’s past. With Totara Rail Bridge’s recent closure, avoid cycling SH6 from Ross and begin a 115km journey from Treetop Walkway. Twenty metres above ground, amid giant rimu and miro treetops it overlooks fern canopies with Southern Alps and Lake Mahinapau peeks, accompanied by birdsong. Cycle historic, forested Mahinapau Tramway Walk, used by sawmilling bogeys with relics and an 1885 sawmilling site trailside.
Close to Hokitika, Scenic Waterways’ sunset cruise along canal-like Mahinapau Creek provides picturesque reflections of flax and kahikatea trees lining its blackish water. Spot kingfisher, heron, cormorant and swallows.
Explore Hokitika’s wide streets and heritage buildings of the gold-rush port around the river mouth. The hues of pounamu can be seen in stores and at Glowworm Dell, rock walls sparkle at night.
Back cycling, wooden Kaniere Waterway flowing with water and draped by verdant bush is delightful. Pounamu tinges Arahura River green; Kumara Reservoir’s shore, littered with barren tree trunks and stumps, is strangely beautiful.
Wander through the past in the late 1800′s gold mining town of Kumara, historic buildings on its main street dominated by the two-storeyed, 1876 Theatre Royal Hotel and cycle to Greymouth on the fourth day. Shuttle back to Hokitika and drive the car back to Greymouth, 37km, 28 minutes each way.
Greymouth to Brunner Mine – 13km, 13 minutes
Reaching Greymouth, drive to Brunner Mine, a Tohu Whenua (landmarks that tell our stories) site and where NZ’s worst industrial accident, an 1896 explosion that killed 65 coalminers. Brunner Walk is a moving experience, with historical information among the site’s remains.
Greymouth to Westport – 102km, 1.5 hours
Kawatiri Coastal Trail, currently links Westport to Virgin Flat Road, running alongside Buller River, Carters Beach, to Cape Foulwind Walkway and its lighthouse, and Cape Foulwind Seal Colony where seals camouflage on rocks. Riding horseshoe-shaped Tauranga Bay leads to Nine Mile Beach then farmland and stunning, verdant native bush overlooking tannin-stained, white sand-bottomed Ōkari River.
Denniston is another Tohu Whenua site. The plateau, where numerous coalmining settlements stood from 1878, can be toured independently; information panels relate history, family stories and daily life. But live it through Westport-based OutWest’s tour, from the steep, incline railway, wagons, workshops, mine shafts, coal seams, aerial ropeway, to settlement remains; hotels, homes, bathhouses, tennis courts, and swimming pool.
OutWest also tour working, open-cast Stockton Mine. See coal transported via aerial ropeway buckets for loading on to trains and the mine’s “nerve centre”, monitoring the 23km-squared site. Driving the pitted, stark landscape you’ll learn the history, coalmining process and witness the land’s rehabilitation.
Westport to Karamea – 95km, 1.5 hours
During the drive north, take in Punakaiki’s Pancake Rocks and Blowholes or walk Charming Creek Walkway, near Seddonville to explore more mining relics.
Karamea offers jaw-dropping scenery. At SH67′s Nikau palm-lined northern end, 17km from Karamea, embark on a stunning, predominantly flat, return walk on the Heaphy Track to Katipo Shelter. Paralleling the rocky coastline, enjoy tannin-stained Kohaihai River, Scotts Beach and towering Nikau palms.
Six kilometres from Karamea, take a torch to access stalactite-laden Tunnel Cave, a thoroughfare on the Fenian Caves Loop in The Fenian. Icicle-like stalactites hang from Miners Cave mouth. Between caves, the trail traverses lush, damp, moss-draped forest. Continue on wide, moss-covered Fenian Track below towering beech, to grassy Adams Flat where a replica miner’s hut sports rusted tools and a deer skull.
Take a day trip to Ōparara Basin, 28km from Karamea and a 1.5hour drive. It’s the location of Honeycomb Hill Cave which is only accessible with a tour. The high-ceilinged cave littered with stalagmites and stalactites is the resting place of bush moa, deer and kiwi bones, giant Powelliphanta snail shells, and fossilised seashells. Water droplets glitter on cave walls; glow worms form a starry sky on rock walls.
Nearby, white limestone Moria Gate Arch, 46m wide and 8m high, crossing whisky-coloured Ōparara River can be seen from a viewpoint but it’s more spectacular standing below the arch. More expansive, Ōparara Arch, among bush, resembles a stone bridge, but the river’s hues are the highlight; hokey pokey, blazing orange, dark rum.
Karamea to Reefton – 174km, 2.5 hours
Reefton, a goldmining town from 1870 to 1950, is movie set-like with 24 late-1800s buildings, its main street lined with tall, black streetlamps and historic wooden stores, hotels and banks. Pan for gold at the replica-1860s miner’s hut, where bearded “miners” share gold-mining stories. Walks and mountain bike tracks of varying grades incorporate mining relics within Victoria Forest Park.
Reefton to Ōtira – 135km, 1hr 45m
Leave the West Coast via Arthur’s Pass, SH73. Drop in, or stay, at the 1865-built Ōtira Stagecoach Hotel crammed with antiques, curios and historical photos. Rooms are delightfully furnished with period pieces including porcelain painted toilets and handbasins.
Ōtira to Arthur’s Pass Village – 13km, 14 minutes
Ōtira Viaduct will astound and before Arthur’s Pass Village, walk Dobson Nature Walk. Alpine vegetation blooms over summer, among majestic mountain ranges.
From the village, rocky Arthur’s Pass Walking Track undulates through beech forest, with some steep stairs. Bridal Veil Falls, viewing the village nestled at the base of mountains and historic Jack’s Hut are highlights. Branch off to cross Bealey River thundering down narrow Bealey Chasm and continue on Bealey Valley Track. Boardwalk crosses orange-tinged tussock, with stunning mountain vistas, to reach Bealey River backdropped by a snow-splattered ridge. Stairs challenge on Devil’s Punchbowl Falls Walk but reward with views of whitewater veiling icicle-like waterfalls behind.
Wander the quaint village of historic cottages, lodges and stores.
Arthur’s Pass Village, central Christchurch bound – 149km, 2hr 20m
Cutting between steep, bush-covered ranges or scree-covered in hues of grey, pink, red, and green, panoramas encompass Bealey and Waimakariri Rivers and Lake Pearson. Breathtaking.
