Between the 12th and 20th centuries, Bali has often been treated as a pawn in the games of kings, rajahs and generals. More often than not, its fate has been closely tied to neighboring Lombok with fierce battles between the two islands over the centuries as different rulers vied for regional dominance. This history of varied occupation can be seen in Bali today, with elements of Hinduism and Islam present in modern Balinese society. However, there is no historical animosity between the religions, or even between the islands of Lombok and Bali.

One of the defining moments in Bali’s history took place in the 16th century when the collapse of the Majapahit dynasty encouraged the spread of Islam from the surrounding states into the Javanese kingdom. Rather than live under Islamic rule, many Hindu elites chose to escape to Bali. These elites included many artists, dancers, musicians, actors and court-supported artisans, as well as some more artistically inclined priests. The result was an intense proliferation of cultural arts across Bali, no doubt inspired by rich Balinese folklore featuring epic battles of good and evil, gods and mortals. This reputation persists today, with many travelers falling in love with the island’s intricate temple carvings, dance performances, colorful sarongs and handicrafts.

When you combine a love of arts with world-class beaches and deliciously fiery sambals, it’s no surprise Bali’s tourism industry is soaring. It’s not unusual for someone to ask you whether this is your second, third or fourth visit to the island. Many locals rely on tourism to some extent, either by working as tour operators or running hotels, yoga studios, massage parlors, bars, cafes or restaurants.

The destination’s popularity with  Australians  means there’s a gradual cultural creep in larger cities like Seminyak, where Melbourne-style cafes and international clothing labels are particularly popular. If you escape the resorts and head further north from Denpasar, you’re more likely to encounter traditional warungs (eateries) and villages untouched by tourism sprawl.

One last word of advice: always watch where you put your feet. Locals will traditionally place small offerings on the footpaths outside their homes or businesses up to three times a day. 83.5% of the population identifies as Hindu and religion plays a large part in Balinese life. In fact, there is a small religious ceremony associated with just about every aspect of Balinese culture, whether it’s the beginning of a soccer game, celebrating the full moon or cleaning the house.

Food and drink

At first glance it might seem difficult to pinpoint Bali’s exact culinary identity. The mishmash of Indonesian and pan-Asian influences means you’re likely to come across menus that sometimes feel part Thai, Malaysian, Indian and Vietnamese. But no matter what you order, the food will always be fresh and bursting with flavor. Dishes are typically made fresh each day, with curries and pastes prepared by hand using traditional methods.

The most authentic food in Bali is usually found streetside at eateries called warungs. Warungs are common in every village and city, and a good place for a quick feed on a budget. Many will specialize in a small menu of popular local dishes.

Top foods to try in Bali

Babi guling:  This is slow cooking Balinese-style. A whole pig is stuffed with chilli, turmeric, ginger, galangal, shallots, garlic, coriander seeds and aromatic leaves and rotated over an open fire. This dish is commonly seen at celebrations.

Satay:  Sometimes spelt ‘sate’ on local menus, Indonesia is famous for its tasty meat skewers (usually chicken) cooked over hot coals and slathered in moreish peanut sauce.

Nasi campur:  Nasi campur feels like a bit of a buffet. Your plate typically comes with a scoop of nasi putih accompanied by small portions of a number of other dishes, including meats, vegetables, peanuts, eggs, and fried-shrimp krupuk.

Nasi goreng:  The old favorite among tertiary students is nothing like the local version. Nasi goreng, literally meaning "fried rice”, is a popular rice dish with pieces of meat and vegetables, and a fried egg added on top.

Sambal:  A fiery paste made using a chili base smashed with secondary ingredients like shrimp paste, fish sauce, garlic, ginger, shallot, scallion, palm sugar, lime juice, and rice vinegar.

Eating vegetarian in Bali

Going vegetarian is relatively easy in Bali as many dishes are already meat-free. Tofu and tempeh are also a standard part of the local diet. Key vegetarian dishes to look out for include nasi saur (rice flavored with toasted coconut and accompanied by tofu, tempeh, vegetables and sometimes egg), urap (steamed vegetables mixed with grated coconut and spices), gado gado (tofu and tempeh mixed with steamed vegetables, boiled egg and peanut sauce) and sayur hijau (leafy green vegetables, usually kangkung – water spinach – flavored with a tomato-chilli sauce).

The abundance of fresh fruits in Bali means you can buy fresh coconuts and juices (or fruity cocktails) almost anywhere you go. If you're looking for something with a bit more punch then you could order a Bintang, the national larger or maybe arak – a local liquor made from fermented rice and coconut palm flowers.

Festivals and events

Many festivals in the Balinese calendar revolve around religious and spiritual occasions marked by periods of prayer or silence, and followed by lots of festivities and feasting. Some festivals might be inconvenient for travelers, such as the Day of Silence, but they’re also a great opportunity to gain an insight into local life that many don’t get to see.

Multiple surf contests are held throughout the year at different times and in different places. Check with local surfing schools for up to date information.

Top festivals in Bali

Nyepi (Day of Silence):  Bali’s major Hindu festival, Nyepi, or the Day of Silence, celebrates the beginning of a new year and is marked by inactivity. Legends say that this is a strategy to convince evil spirits that Bali is uninhabited and therefore not worthy of visiting! Jokes on them. The day involves prayer, meditation and quiet reflection.

Bali Arts Festival:  For an island with a strong history of cultural arts, it’s no surprise the Bali Arts Festival has pride of place in the annual calendar. Based at the Taman Wedhi Budaya arts center in Denpasar, travelers can see village-based dance groups competing for local pride across several traditional dance categories. The date changes each year but is typically held between mid-June to mid-July.

Bali Kite Festival:  From July to October, the skies of southern Bali fill with huge, colorful monsters, critters and imaginative creations. Scores of kites are launched by the locals as part of this special spiritual event. It is believed the kites urge the gods to provide abundant harvests.

Indonesian Independence Day:  Held on 17 August each year, this day celebrates Indonesia's independence from the Dutch in 1945. Expect to see legions of marching school children, flags, kites and fireworks. Don’t expect to get anywhere quickly either on the day or the days leading up to it.

Galungan and Kuningan:  Galungan celebrates the death of a legendary tyrant called Mayadenawa. The celebrations come to a head with the Kuningan festival, which is when the Balinese say thanks and goodbye to the gods. The exact dates of these two festivals vary as they are planned using the 210-day wuku (or Pawukon) calendar.

Geography and environment

Bali is undoubtedly Indonesia’s most popular province thanks to its abundance of beautiful beaches, leafy jungles and impressive mountains. Located just east of Java and west of Lombok, the Bali province includes not only the island of Bali but also a few of the smaller neighboring islands, such as Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan, and Nusa Ceningan.

Bali's highest mountain is Mt Agung (3,031 m, 9,944 ft), which is also known as the "Mother Mountain”. One of the other popular volcanoes on the island is Mt Batur. Both of these volcanoes have contributed to Bali’s incredibly fertile soil, which has allowed the rice crop trade to flourish.

Bali is located just 8 degrees south of the equator, which means it enjoys a fairly even climate year-round. The average year-round temperature hovers around 86°F, with a humidity level of about 85%. It's also surrounded by coral reefs and is part of the Coral Triangle, an area with the highest biodiversity of marine species. Over 500 reef-building coral species can be found here, which is seven times the entire Caribbean.

Bali’s problems with environmental pollution are well-documented, and it’s fair to say that the nearly 5.7 million tourists who visit annually are contributing their fair share. In late 2017, Indonesian officials declared a “garbage emergency” after a tide of plastic washed up a 5.8 kilometer (3.6 mile) stretch of coastline. We encourage all travelers to carry a reusable plastic bottle with them, a reusable tote bag for carrying items and to try and minimize their use of plastics wherever possible.

While you’ll find many of the main tourism hubs, like Seminyak and Kuta, filled with international fashion labels, there are also many local boutiques offering a wide variety of hand-made goods. These include traditional wood carvings (and even some famously phallic bottle openers), silver jewelry, colorful sarongs, eco-friendly bags, bamboo satchels, recycled furniture and a near limitless range of body oils and fragrances. Of course, if you’re looking for a traditional ‘I Heart Bali’ t-shirt or Bintang singlet, these are never in short supply either.

Like many parts of South East Asia, bargaining is a big part of the local shopping experience. Getting a good price comes down to how well you can haggle, but it’s important to have fun, bargain in good faith, and remember to smile. You’ll usually find better prices, and more negotiable shop owners, away from the main tourist strips.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

When is the best time to visit Bali?

Sitting a snug 8 degrees from the equator, Bali’s climate is classic tropics. There’s a dry season and a rainy season, and not a whole lot in between.

The best time for a Bali tour (weather-wise) is the July to August peak season, or from December to the first week of January.

Although if you’d like to avoid the crowds (and why wouldn’t you) shoulder months like April, May, June and September make an excellent alternative.

The weather is dry and slightly less humid, and the island in general is a lot more relaxed.

October isn’t too bad either, especially if you’re into water sports like scuba diving, surfing or snorkeling (the rainfall is much lighter than in November).

Do you need a visa for a Bali tour?

The short answer is maybe – depending on your nationality. Passport holders from over 60 countries (including the   UK ,   Australia   and the   United States ) can enter Indonesia with a free tourist visa on arrival which allows you to stay for 30 days for tourism purposes. An immigration officer will date stamp your passport when you arrive and you will not be able to extend your stay. If you overstay there are hefty fines of IDR 1,000,000 (approximately 70 USD) per day.

If there's a chance you might want to stay longer than 30 days, you'll need to pay for a visa on arrival or apply for one prior to traveling at an overseas Indonesian consulate or embassy.

To enter Bali, you’ll need to meet the following requirements:

• proof of onward or return ticket
• proof of funds to pay for your expenses during your trip
• completed immigration card (this will usually be given to you on the plane or at the arrival terminal)

Local laws require that you must be able to show your valid passport at any time when required to do so by an immigration office. We recommend taking a clear photocopy of your passport photo page, and visa (after arriving), to carry with you.

Should I tip on a Bali tour?

Tipping isn’t compulsory in Bali, or anywhere else in Indonesia. But, like most countries, it’s very much appreciated.

Remember that many Balinese rely on tourism as a main source of income, and a tip is always appreciated.

What is the internet access like in Bali?

In tourist centers like Kuta, Seminyak, Denpasar, and Lovina internet access should be fine, and there will be plenty of internet cafes (or cafes with free internet) to choose from if your Wi-Fi isn’t up to scratch.

In more rural areas, there could be little or no coverage, particularly during homestays. Just remember to plan ahead. 

What are the toilets like in Bali?

Restaurants and hotels in developed tourist centers will have Western-style flush toilets.

In more rural areas the traditional squat toilet will be more common.

We recommend packing a bottle of hand sanitizer if you plan to visit rural parts of Bali.

Can I drink the water on a Bali tour?

Drinking water from taps isn’t recommended in Indonesia, but for environmental reasons try to avoid buying bottled water every day. There are a number of filtered canteens you can purchase or bring a supply of water filtration tablets that you can drop into your bottle wherever you go.

If you’re traveling on an Intrepid Travel trip, we always carry with us a large drum of water in our truck to refill your bottles on the road. Our hotel operators will also provide water free of charge to refill your bottles.

Are credit cards accepted widely in Bali?

Major credit cards are widely accepted by large shops, hotels and restaurants in Bali.

T hey may not be accepted by smaller vendors such as small family restaurants, market stalls or in remote towns and rural areas.

Make sure you carry enough cash for purchases since credit cards aren't always an option everywhere in Bali.

What is ATM access like in Indonesia?

ATMs are found widely throughout Bali, so withdrawing cash shouldn't be problematic in most areas. Some smaller villages and rural areas may not have ATM access, so be prepared for this before venturing too far from a city or major town.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

Is Bali safe for LGBTQIA+ travelers?

Homosexuality is legal in most of Indonesia, however, revisions to Indonesia’s criminal code are currently being considered that would criminalize gay sex and same-sex relationships. Advocacy groups fear this would represent a profound setback to human rights in Indonesia as a result. The LGBTQIA+ community has also been known to be targeted and harassed by police.

Bali, with its Hindu majority, has always been more liberal, tolerant and relaxed in attitude, however, public displays of affection are still not the norm for any couples anywhere in the country. Upscale hotels will likely not have any issues with same-sex travelers sharing a bed, however, if you are staying in budget or family-run businesses and are allocated separate beds, you might feel more comfortable not drawing attention to your relationship. 

Because sex, in general, is a taboo subject in Indonesian society, the issue of sexuality is unlikely to arise while traveling here. Indonesia is generally safe for LGBTQIA+ travelers, provided you are willing to be discreet and cautious with public behavior.

Having traveled around the world, we do have a decent sense of premium travel service, and this team absolutely knocked it out of the ballpark. To begin with, our agent made the planning phase a breeze. His availability at all hours and readiness to respond to our numerous queries stood out and gave us tremendous confidence. His guidance with the sequencing of the itinerary proved invaluable. And, unlike most travel companies, his sincerity was obvious when we were allowed to book the hotels ourselves, saving a substantial sum. The experience on the ground was nothing short of amazing. In fact, at times we felt embarrassed at the level of attention and care showered on us! From the moment we landed in Jakarta to the point we boarded our return flight from Denpasar, the team was constantly on top of things, sending us instructions and inquiring about our status to make sure everything was in order. Our guides and drivers were among the most wonderful human beings we have met. They did everything possible to make the trip memorable for us. We are certain there were many others behind the scenes who we did not meet, but worked tirelessly – our heartfelt thanks to them. Our trip was great, and we have no complaints about the travel company, which was very supportive and responsive to any requests and last-minute changes of plans.  We normally like to explore off-the-beaten paths when we travel, but instead, we felt like we were following more of the touristy crowd.  As a young couple who enjoy adventure, we would have appreciated the guide helping us explore places that are more for locals.  We noticed that the travel company was not too familiar with the hotels we stayed in and we think it might be important for the agents to see the locations in person to provide better guidance.

We had a good relationship with our Zicasso travel agent, who helped to organize our dream trip to Japan. The trip itself was lovely. The accommodations were top-notch and our agent created a customized itinerary that accommodated our special requests to attend a baseball game, overnight at a Zen monastery, and visit a tea farm. The only downside was that once we were in Japan, our main contact ended up being another outfit, one that organizes tours for countless tourists each year. As a result, we didn't have consistent contact with our tour operator. It was only possible to reach their representatives via email or by using roaming to call them on ($$$). It would have been better to be able to reach reps and local guides via text message or WhatsApp. The information provided by the in-country tour company hadn't been updated since before the Covid-19 pandemic. It consisted of a series of PDF files with hyperlinks that weren't live, so you couldn't simply click for more information. It left a less-than-luxurious impression. Nevertheless, the trip was still spectacular and we had a great time.

Overall, Zicasso’s travel company did a pretty good job of planning the trip. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. The spacing of the events on the itinerary was well-balanced, with a good mix of activities and free time! The South Korea portion of our trip was flawless, with excellent guides and events planned for each day. Our local tour guides knew to change the itinerary when they noticed there was a chance to optimize timing for certain events to avoid crowds or that we were doing too many activities that were similar, which was excellent! One point of feedback: Key transfers were missed (eg, We were expected to find our own way out of Hakone to get to the train station to Tokyo, only to find out the night before that taxis were refusing to come out to our hotel for fares because it was too far, and the hotel didn’t offer any good solutions. We were very lucky that our wonderful tour guide for Hakone offered to drive us at the last minute, otherwise we would’ve missed the train and our subsequent booked teamLab Planets and food tour in Tokyo.)

The moment I spoke with Jasmine from the travel agency for the first time, I knew that I was going to work with somebody who would understand my interests. Not only were Jasmine and her team accommodating, but they made sure I was able to get some rest in certain aspects of the trips where they could anticipate I would need a break. Very, very organized. They knew how to coordinate the entire trip, especially since I traveled to four islands (Java, Borneo, Bali, Nusa Penida). The whole team was very accommodating, and I do not have enough words to express how great I felt about their service. When I arrived in Jakarta, I was immediately greeted by airport staff who helped me get my luggage and take me to the hotel. I was then met by the team who took time out of their busy schedule and showed me the Jakarta airport and Jakarta. They even took me out for dinner where I had an authentic Indonesian meal for the first time. Afterwards, every day, I was picked up by assigned guides and drivers who I felt safe with and could trust for that day. I learned so much about Indonesia, its history, and its cultures. All the guides were friendly and very informative, making sure I felt comfortable. They even asked me questions about America, my culture, and my philosophy. The team made sure I got to every site and made sure I was safe throughout the trip. Even all the hotels and resort areas I stayed in were amazing, clean, and beautiful. Overall, I highly, highly recommend this travel company to everyone who wants to visit Indonesia. I was heard by them, I felt safe with them, and I was able to trust them. They treated me like a family member and I had a very memorable experience!

Unforgettable trip to Borneo!

I hired the klotok tour with them to visit the orangutan fields in Borneo. 3 days / 2 nights. Incredible journey. From the first moment, very good communication, explanation of the entire journey and good management. The trip itself a wonder, perfectly organized, everything in its time, large, clean and comfortable boat. The charming crew, always aware of what you may need. How I’d say the perfect ORGANIZATION. 

An unforgettable experience! I traveled with a friend. We took the tour to see orangutans in Borneo and I loved it. We did it in a Klotok with more travelers and the guide Isai who spoke Spanish and was also very fun. It was a great trip through the national park and a 100% recommended experience!!

We did the 3d2n orangutan tour in November, with the guide Opi. The experience was incredible, not only for the trip of being in a Klotok in the jungle and seeing orangutans but for the service. We learned a lot and had impressive meals (something difficult, given that you are in the middle of the jungle), on an environmentally aware trip and employing local people. I hope they continue to grow.

You are in for the time of your life on this tour! It was a perfect mix every other day of packed adventure and chill/shopping time while touring Bali and its surrounding islands. Our tour guide was Rio, and I cannot recommend him enough if you're looking to have fun. His laugh is infectious, and he kept the group energy up even when some of us got sick with Bali Belly or got a little scraped up on some activities. This will be the adventure of a lifetime!

We were 6 solo travellers on our tour from all walks of life. 10 days simply flew by; every day had a variety of activities that kept us busy from dawn to dusk and there was a perfect mix of scheduled and personal time. The tour is pretty much as advertised on the tin and our tour guide Ali simply brought the whole adventure to life. He was funny and bonded with the group, provided great advice and left us make our own decisions when we wanted to do something off schedule. It would not have been the same without him. I'd recommend this tour to the solo traveller wanting to make new friends, wanting to adventure/explore and see plenty of beaches and sunsets. There also is the opportunity to enjoy the night life if that's down your alley. Good food and choppy boat rides are a given and the accomodations were as good as you could get in each location. Any faults would be microscopic knit picking, I had some of the most memorable moments on this trip and the Mt Batur sunrise was one of the most fun experiences I've had in a while. Thanks to my fellow travellers and Ali for making such wonderful memories! This trip has inspired me to do more group traveling like this.

Excellent daily activities arrangements

Incredible adventure!! I personalised this tour to skip Bali and went to Ubud and Komodo. The hotels used were fantastic and very well located, with the views in Komodo out of this world. The driver guides for the day trips in Ubud friendly and knowledgeable and we saw so many cool places, they even took us to extra sights we wanted to see. The boat trip to Komodo was the highlight with the most stunning beaches I've ever seen, and of course the huge Komodo dragons. Communication from Vio Travel was excellent from start to finish, as well as there local contact via WhatsApp when in Indonesia, there was always someone to ask any questions or assist. I highly recommend this trip and Vio Travel, thank you!!

I loved the combination of relaxation amd exposure to culture. It was wonderful to get off Bali and experience a few different islands. We were surprised that the tour ran with just two of us, but it was still a positive experience. All of the details were taken care of, and the on the ground operator (Pacto) stayed in close contact with me via WhatsApp. My only complaint is the accommodation on Gili-T, Frii resort. It was notably inferior to the others, and certainly nit a 4-star hotel. We had to wait hours for them to replace the lock on my friend's room because they could not locate the key. The grounds needed maintenance, e.g. the pool was unavailable and we had to use the pool next door. My refrigerator had to be replaced after I almost slipped several times because it was leaking. My friend's room didn't have a safe. Because the bathroom was an open air concept, I had to contend with mosquitos in my room. The room did bit qualify as luxury accommodations, especially when compared with true luxury hotels like the Pullman. Fortunately, we still had a good time. Mustika also did a great job of showing us Lombok. It was my favorite leg of the journey.

Day 1 was very long. Owing to the heavy traffic we were about 2 hours later get back to the hotel. The tour guide was great and his English was good. Day 2 the 6.30 start was unnecessary as when we got to the port we sat around for over 1 hour before we were marched to were we borded the boat. The island is also a rush around tour until the end were we lazed around for another 90 plus minute then dropped back at the port for another 1 hours wait. My overall impression was stit around, then rush around, then sit around waiting for the boat

On my trip to Bali, I came across such beautiful places and even more beautiful experiences that left me wanting for more. It was altogether a wonderful experience for me. Safety Measures To Follow During Bali Trip

Some of the best measures one must take while traveling to Bali during the pandemic are:

• One must carry a COVID-19 negative certificate at all times
• Make all hotel bookings in advance and ensure that you have a copy of the same
• Ensure that you wear a mask at all time when traveling
• Maintain social distancing and avoid going to crowded places
• Keep a sanitizer handy at all times and ensure that the rooms are well-sanitized and hygienic.

Essential and Additional Info

Bali is an incredibly safe place to backpack and travel — even if you’re traveling solo (and even as a solo female traveler). But it is always good to protect one’s safety, especially during solo trips. A Bali holiday package must solve all your problems but safety is still in your own hand. However, certain rules must be universally followed, irrespective of travelling in a group or on your own -

• Bali is a peaceful country. Hence, violent attacks are absent or rare. Make sure to keep your money and belongings safe.
• Theft is a recurring problem, especially in public transit in Indonesia. Stay safe and avoid crowded places.
• Be aware of the Credit card fraud which is a common issue in Indonesia. To stay safe, carry cash or debit cards.
• Follow your gut feeling. If you feel the cab driver is weird or the hotel assistants are indecent, move out! Do not think twice, just move to a safer location or simply deboard the cab.
• Carry copies of your documents before leaving for the trip and share the trip details with your family and friends when traveling alone.
• Heard of “Do As The Romans Do?” In Bali, “do not do what the locals don’t” and you will be safe all the while.
• Do not consume tap water in Bali. Make use of bottled mineral water.
• Don’t overindulge with monkeys since they can bite and might cause infections.
• While going on a trek or hike make sure to be accompanied by a local travel guide.
• Keep your valuables close and safe not just from the pickpockets but also from monkeys

GIANYAR, Bali: The National Narcotics Agency (BNN) has issued a warning that Bali has become a prime target for transnational drug kingpins, evidenced by the raids on two clandestine laboratories in May and July 2024, reported Antara news agency.

BNN Head Commissioner General Marthinus Hukom stated that these discoveries highlight the alarming presence of drug trafficking networks in Bali.

The first lab, found on May 13, was hydroponically growing cannabis and was operated by two Ukrainians and a Russian citizen in a villa in Tibubeneng, Badung District.

The second lab, discovered on July 18 in a rented villa in Keliki Kawan Village, Payangan Sub-district, Gianyar District, was producing dimethyltryptamine (DMT), a hallucinogenic drug.

During the raid, BNN officers arrested three Filipinos while a hunt was launched for a Jordanian citizen, identified as AMI, he noted.

"These findings must not be undermined as they have sounded the alarm bell for Bali and other regions in Indonesia as well because international drug syndicates could also target them as places of clandestine labs," he remarked.

The discovery of the second clandestine lab has also shown the fact that transnational drug rings have no longer smuggled illicit drugs into Bali but have also "launched an attack from inside" the resort island.

He said Bali is supposed to be special for Indonesia owing to its world-class tourism industry. Hence, he emphasised the need to protect it from the ongoing threats of local and international drug kingpins.

Meanwhile, BNN's law enforcement deputy, Insp. Gen. I Wayan Sugiri had stated earlier that the three Filipinos arrested during the raid of the second clandestine lab were identified by their initials as DAS, a 28-year-old man; PMS, DAS' mother; and DOS, DAS' sister.

DAS has been named a suspect while the two others have remained witnesses, he remarked, adding that the clandestine lab was found inside a tarpaulin tent that the suspects had set up in the front yard of the rented villa.

He added that BNN officers discovered chemical substances and lab equipment, including measuring glasses, beaker glasses, and a magnetic stirrer, as well as a plastic container of clear liquid containing the DMT substance.

DAS has been charged under Articles 114 (2), 113 (2), and 112 (2) of Law No. 35 of 2009 on Narcotics and is facing the death penalty or life imprisonment, he stated.

As reported earlier, drug lords still see Indonesia as a potential market due to its vast population and millions of drug users. The value of drug trade in the country is estimated to have reached about Rp66 trillion.

NJ Transit train riders urge agency to 'do better.' Here's what the CEO, board had to say

NJ Transit riders were in search of solutions on Wednesday night at the agency's monthly board meeting regarding what is being done to improve their commutes – but they didn’t get a whole lot of answers.

Their asks were simple:

Improve communication on the NJ Transit app and station boards where track numbers are unreliable and trains disappear from the board; do a better job of informing station staff and rail crew about changes so they can communicate with riders

Make better contingency plans so there are more buses or trains when cancellations happen and cross-honor with every mode of transportation, including the MTA and ferries

Do more to prevent overcrowding in stations and on trains, especially when air conditioning isn’t working

Communicate with customers how these improvements will be achieved

But the phrase most repeated was: “Do better.”

Gregory Fabiano, an Elizabeth resident, said he has had five-hour commutes some days and has raised his concerns to every member on the board but received no response.

“There is no accountability, there is nobody telling us what’s going to happen,” Fabiano said. “You can’t even dignify us with a response. … You have the sphere of influence to make sure these changes are happening, you have the power to make it happen.”

Except for Francis O’Connor, the board chairman, who assured commuters they are listening and take to heart their concerns, no other board members spoke up Wednesday in response to the asks, issues and complaints of rail riders.

NJ Transit President and CEO Kevin Corbett began his remarks by apologizing to customers about “the recent impacts to rail service, which clearly has not met ours, much less our customers’, expectations.”

He acknowledged the disruption customers experienced when the agency pre-emptively announced a number of trains that would be canceled due to “heat-related” equipment issues. But he quickly shifted to updates with Amtrak and the work the two agencies have undertaken in recent months to dive into root causes of why Amtrak’s wires have tangled with NJ Transit’s power equipment atop trains. A joint review of their investigation is being finalized and will identify projects to prioritize funding for.

But NJ Transit’s mechanical issues were not discussed in-depth, even though several customers sought answers about whether the agency is having trouble maintaining its rolling stock and what is being done to prevent maintenance problems, which has been the leading cause of train cancellations since 2021.

“I hear a lot discussion about Amtrak and the infrastructure issues, but what I don’t hear is a discussion about rail operations maintenance,” said Adam Reich, a Northeast Corridor commuter. “Riders know what type of equipment they’re riding, we want to know what the trends are and when you are going to fix them.”

Julie Lew described a recent experience of waiting in New York Penn Station for her track number to appear, only to see her train disappear from the board and never reappear. After running around in a panic, she barely made out “Maplewood” over the public announcement system and raced around to find out what track the train was on.

“I ask that you acknowledge there is an issue with relaying gate numbers and changes in service to passengers, investigate the cause of these issues and propose solutions,” Lew said.

During questions with reporters after the meeting, Corbett said officials are aware of the DepartureVision and track communication problems and are actively trying to fix them.

“The way it was originally programmed is that if the train is canceled or stops or doesn’t go any farther, when it doesn’t go any farther it just blanks the screen so you get that it disappears like a phantom train,” Corbett said, adding that they are trying to figure out a way to enable better GPS tracking. “That’s one of our top priorities.”

Ultimately, straphangers said they wanted to start a dialogue with the agency so these problems can get fixed.

“Just hoping that the board really takes into consideration the three asks in hopes that we can continue making NJ Transit better,” said Sarah Ross, another commuter. “I want public transit to work.”
