Where is the Sahara Desert?

The Sahara Desert is in North Africa. It spans a mighty 9,200,000 square kms across 10 countries, including Morocco, Egypt, Mali and Libya.

It's the world's largest hot desert and third-largest after Antarctica and the Arctic.

What is the weather like in the Sahara Desert?

As a desert region, the Sahara can experience extreme weather. Winter (December to February) can be very cold, with overnight temperatures dropping to 5°C or lower.

You'll need a sleeping bag, thermals, a scarf, gloves and a warm jacket for travel in winter.

Oh, and be prepared for cold showers at your desert camp!

Summer (June to September) can be very hot with intense temperatures that can reach the high 40°Cs. This might be too uncomfortable for those not used to the heat. It's super important to use sun protection and stay hydrated. That said, the desert can still get pretty chilly at night when the sun goes down, so you'll need a fleece to rug up.

Spring (March to May) sees the arrival of strong winds and there is an increased risk of sandstorms in April – but don't worry, your leader will always check the forecast beforehand to see if it's safe to stay in the desert.

When is the best time to visit the Sahara Desert?

The best time to visit the Sahara Desert is during the spring months between March to May, as well as the autumn months of October and November. During these times, the desert temperatures are hot but manageable and the nights don't get quite as cold. However, one thing to note is that between January to May there is usually a higher number of sandstorms recorded, especially in April.

What clothing should I wear in the Sahara Desert?

What to pack will differ slightly depending on the time of year and the activities you'll be doing. But below are the basics you'll need:

  • Light scarf or face mask can be handy for preventing you from inhaling desert dust
  • Sun hat – wide-brimmed, ideally, to protect your face and head from the sun's rays and strong winds
  • Sunscreen – when you're in the desert, it goes without saying!
  • Small daypack for day trips and excursions
  • Light, loose-fitting pants
  • Joggers or jeans for camel rides
  • Long-sleeved shirts
  • Fleece – for all seasons
  • Warm layers (for winter trips) – you'll need thermals, gloves, a woolly hat and a fleece to rug up as the temperatures can drop to below freezing at night
  • Small head torch – handy for going to the bathroom at night
  • Thongs (flip flops) for camp
  • Hiking shoes or runners

What animals live in the Sahara Desert?

The Sahara Desert is one of the fiercest environments for animal life.

A wide range of mammals live in the Sahara, from cheetahs, dromedary camels, desert foxes, gazelles, ostrich, and hyrax to African wild dogs.

Reptile life includes the desert crocodile, sand viper and the desert monitor.

Other common species include the deathstalker scorpion, the Saharan silver ant, and over 90 species of birds.

Are Intrepid trips accessible for travellers with disabilities?

We are committed to making travel widely  accessible , regardless of ability or disability. We do our best to help you see the world, regardless of physical or mental limitations.

We are always happy to talk to travellers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them toward the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

How to Do a Sahara Desert Tour from Marrakech + Best Tours

Looking for what it’s doing going on a Sahara tour, plus the best Sahara desert tours from Marrakech? Read on for the details!

A line of 5 camels climbs along the ridge of a sand dune in the distance, led by a lone person walking in front.

Of all the places we went to in Morocco, I was most excited to visit the Sahara – it was absolutely a top bucket list item for me!

The way that the sand dunes start rising out of the desert as you approach Merzouga, knowing that in front of you is the Sahara Desert , and you’re going to be riding a camel through it , is absolutely priceless.

I’m so happy to say that the visit lived up to or even exceeded our high expectations and this was one of my favorite travel experiences to date. I loved this experience so much, and it is absolutely worth the time, energy, and effort it takes to make it out to the Sahara to experience it yourself.

I want you to have as fantastic of an experience in the Sahara Desert of Morocco as we did, so in this post, I’m sharing everything you need to know about doing a Sahara desert tour, as well as some top tour options from Marrakech.

sahara tours albania

What to Expect on Your Sahara Desert Experience

Every desert tour follows a very similar itinerary. If you’re leaving from Marrakech, you’ll be picked up from your hotel or riad in an air-conditioned van to start the 8+ hour long drive out to the Sahara. You’ll be with a friendly, kind, helpful, and engaging guide , and spending time with your local guide will be a highlight of the trip.

The first day, you’ll only drive partway out, as you’ll also be making some interesting stops along the way. These stops usually include Ait Ben Haddou (a super cool fortified ton on a hill that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site ) and/or Ouarzazate , a desert city known for its film studios.

sahara tours albania

You’ll usually stop for the night near either the Todra Gorge or Dades Valley , two beautiful areas filled with stunning rock formations and small villages. The tour includes your accommodation for the night here.

On Day 2, you’ll continue out to Merzoua, the town on the edge of the Sahara sand dunes. Depending on the exact tour itinerary, you might make another stop along the way, or you may spend some time in the Todra or Dades Gorges before starting your journey in the morning.

sahara tours albania

When you arrive in the town of Merzouga on the evening of the second day, you’ll meet up with your desert camp hosts, and ride a camel into the Sahara . It will take about 1.5 hours to reach your camp on the other side of the Erg Chebbi dunes. You’ll watch the magnificent desert sunset from the sand dunes, either in the middle of the dunes, or right at camp .

sahara tours albania

When you arrive in camp, you’ll find your tent where you’ll spend the night – these are not your typical pop up camping tents – they are well-designed, sturdy, and roomy tents, with running water, a bathroom, and electricity.

A typical Sahara desert tour luxury camp at night - a line of long, skinny, red carpets make a pathway down the center of the camp, with lanterns placed alongside the carpets. Tan, square shaped tents with a pointed top line linel the carpet, and greenery is planted at intervals.

Then, enjoy a delectable hot dinner at camp – this dinner will be as delicious as anything you’ve eaten in Morocco!

After dinner, the Berber men will make a fire and play traditional music around the flames, and then you will definitely want to go watch the stars in the middle of the dunes!

Day 3 (and 4)

On Day 3, you’ll enjoy a fantastic breakfast in the dunes. You may have time to go sandboarding or ATVing in the dunes, depending on the tour.

sahara tours albania

If you’re doing a 3-day tour, you’ll leave by early to mid-morning to head back to Merzouga, get in the vans, and head back to Marrakech or continue to Fes . If you’re doing a 4-day tour, you’ll get an extra day to enjoy the desert.

My Top Tip For Choosing a Sahara Desert Tour

My biggest tip for visiting Morocco is to spend a full day in the Sahara. While you absolutely can have a great experience doing just the overnight, I think if you’re going to spend all that time getting out to the desert, you should stay and play a while. This is what we did, and I’d recommend it to anyone.

Both of the 4 day tours that I recommend in the list below (#4 and #5 on the list) give you a full day to explore and play in the desert.

Important Things to Know Before You Book

Booking your tour in advance vs booking in marrakech.

Considering booking a tour in Marrakech? You have two options: book in advance online or find a tour operator in the city and negotiate a price.

Booking on arrival lets you haggle for a lower price. However, there’s a trade-off. Online tour companies value their reputation and customer reviews, which often translates to a better experience. In contrast, a tour booked last-minute in the city’s souks may not prioritize this, potentially affecting your experience.

This may be a particularly good choice for solo female travelers. To avoid unwanted attention from guides, it’s safer to book your Sahara desert tour online, where companies are more likely to focus on ensuring a great experience and securing positive reviews.

Small Group Tour vs Private Tour

This one is really down to personal preference, and what’s available for the itinerary you want. I could only find private tours for the 4-day tours, for example.

If you’re doing a 3-day tour, though, you have the choice between private and small group. While I used to hate hate hate any type of group tour (there was one tour we did in Cozumel where I felt like we and 500 other people were being herded and shuffled through the streets of Mexico together. I hated this and it put me off of any type of group tour for a long time), I’ve come to really, really enjoy a quality small-group tour.

While it’s certainly a bit of a toss-up as to what type of people you’ll be with, we’ve now done a ton of small group tours in many countries we’ve visited, and we’ve loved getting to know and bonding with other travelers. It’s overwhelmingly been a positive experience.

Getting to hang out with other travelers from around the world now often ends up being a highlight of our trips!

What to Pack for the Sahara Desert

Headscarf:  These really are helpful to protect your head from the sun, wind, and sand (plus they just make you look so legit.) You can buy one in any marketplace in Morocco for around 50 dirhams ($5) – plus it makes a great souvenir from Morocco to bring home with you.

The guides will help you tie the scarf in their traditional style.

Loose fitting pants/shorts : You’ll definitely want pants of some kind for riding camels, and loose fitting is the way to go to beat the heat. I wore a pair of pants I bought in Marrakech – you can find this style all over the city.

Dress, kaftan or djallaba : Kaftan and djallabas are traditional Moroccan clothing (long “dress”-like outfits that both men and women wear) and are a great thing to pick up if you want to look SUPER legit in the desert.

Matthew is wearing a kaftan in our camel pictures and he looks absolutely bomb. (Wear shorts underneath and then hike up the kaftan a little bit – it wasn’t hard for him to sit on the camel wearing that outfit).

Jacket : The Sahara can get chilly at night, even if it’s 90 F during the day. I’d definitely bring a light jacket if you’re visiting during the spring or summer. If you’re visiting during the winter, nights get quite cold (lows in the 30’s and 40’s) so I’d bring a heavier coat and possibly other winter gear (hat, gloves).

Sunscreen : No explanation necessary here, but definitely don’t forget this. Matthew always uses  this sunscreen stick , and I wear this facial  sunscreen for sensitive skin  everyday.

Something for motion sickness : No matter what mode of transportation you choose to arrive in the desert, you’re going to have to ride on the winding roads of Morocco. These roads made me suuuuuuuuper nauseous (I actually  threw up out the window  as we were going through switchbacks in the Atlas Mountains).

All that to say, I’d definitely recommend something for motion sickness.

While  dramamine  is a tried and true option, I recently tried out the  Relief Band for motion sickness  and it has worked impressively well!

An E-Sim Card: I like having fast, high speed data when we’re traveling out of the country, and I recently started using e-sim cards – they’re convenient, cheap, and really reliable. I’ve bought my e-sims from SimOptions.com for my past several trips and it’s been a great service!

Sahara Desert Tours FAQs

Can you do a day trip to the sahara desert from marrakech.

It takes approximately 8-9 hours to get to Merzouga from Marrakech or Fes, requiring quite a bit of time and effort to get out to the desert. So, it is definitely not possible to do a daytrip to the Sahara desert from Marrakech, you’ll for sure need the 3 days to do a desert tour justice.

The extra time is totally worth it though!

(However, if you really, truly only have time for a daytrip, check out these 10 best day trips from Marrakech )

What is the Best Month to Visit the Sahara?

Unsurprisingly, the Sahara Desert gets hot, very hot, during the summer months. Between May-September, highs are in the mid-90’s to over 100 degrees F (35-40 C), and lows are between 70-80 F (20-25 C).

Highs during winter can range generally average in the 60’s-70’s (15-20 C), with lows in the low 40’s (4 C). Definitely bring some warm coats, warm pajamas, a beanie, and some gloves if you’re visiting in winter – there’s no heating in the tents.

Undoubtedly, the best time to visit the Sahara desert is during the spring and fall, when the temperatures are milder and the heat isn’t as intense. However, you can have a good time in the Sahara desert at any time of year, you just need to be prepared for the weather that you’ll be experiencing.

Is It Worth Going to the Sahara Desert?

A woman in a white shirt and long red skirt sits on a sand dune in the Sahara, looking behind her innto the distance, as the sun rises on the horizon.

One million percent, yes! It is absolutely worth the time and effort in your Morocco itinerary to go out to the Sahara. This surreal and epic bucket list adventure will be one you never forget!

Camel trekking in Morocco is one of the most iconic travel experiences you can have. A Sahara Desert tour is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Riding a camel into the Sahara Desert to spend a night under the stars in a desert camp will also be one of the most memorable experiences of your life.

What to Expect from the Sahara Region

It is a misconception the Moroccan Sahara is entirely made up of dunes. The Sahara, the most extensive desert in the world, starts in Morocco with a flat, arid, rocky landscape. A mixture of sand and rock.

Sahara Desert Tours - Camel trekking in Morocco

The Sahara region is also an exciting mix of scenic gorges and beautiful oasis towns. Many of these areas are set against the stunning backdrop of the Atlas Mountains, which you need to cross to get to the desert from Marrakech or Fez. It is a vast area, but worth it if you have sufficient time to travel the distances involved.

Where do Sahara Desert Tours Leave From

Covering an area of 9.4 million square kilometres, the Sahara engulfs most of North Africa. Few places in the world compare. The Sahara covers Morocco’s western border.

The two main sand dunes tourists visit and where the Sahara tours leave from are Erg Chebbi and Erg Chigaga (erg meaning dune). While each offers a unique experience, the most popular is Erg Chebbi with dunes reaching over 520 feet high.

Erg Chigaga is a little more off the beaten track. As it is over 60km’s from the nearest road, there are fewer facilities, so it offers a much more rustic experience. The trip there will be longer and more testing as well.

Erg Chebbi is more accessible, only 30 Km from the town of Merzouga , close to the border of Algeria. There are modern hotels and some small Auberge’s (small inns or motels) dotted along the remote drive between Merzouga and Erg Chebbi for those who want to break the long trip up.

How far is the Sahara Desert from Marrakech and Fez

  • Marrakech is approx 600km from Merzouga near the Erg Chebbi dunes and approximately 360km from Zagora, near the Er Chigaga dunes.
  • Fez is approx 470km from Merzouga and 670km from Zagora.

While the distances don’t seem that long, much of the driving is over mountain passes and on basic roads. Travelling from Marrakech or Fez to the Sahara will take a full day at best.

We travelled to the Sahara Desert as part of a 3-day road trip from Marrakech to Fez .

Preparing for Camel Trekking

When you arrive at Erg Chebbi, you will be asked to take ONLY what you need in a small bag as you must carry all of your belongings and required water for the night on your camel.  Our bags were small as instructed. Although, no one said anything about heavy. Who said you couldn’t enjoy a few cheeky reds in the Sahara?!

You will then be fitted with a camel and not so formally acquainted with your trusty steed. You will mount and try to stay mounted while the animal stands up. A very strange motion at first and not so graceful. Then, it’s off into the dunes of the Sahara.

Note: There are in fact no camels in the Sahara Desert, only ‘Dromedary’. This is the correct name for the one-humped mode of desert transport. Only the two-humped variety are called camels.

Sahara Desert dunes annd camels resting

To our surprise (and slight relief) the camels are tied together with a rope and walk in line following a guide. Much like the camel caravans used on the historic trade routes. Some might find this comforting while others may have been expecting more of a solo affair. Nonetheless, this is not a failsafe system.

I watched as my camel expertly undid the knot in the rope with his teeth. Once freed, he slowed to ensure a good distance between us and the group and casually started heading in another direction. As the rest of the caravan dutifully followed the guide across the rolling dunes of the Sahara, my camel and I strayed further and further from the group. Thankfully my calls for help were eventually heard, and I was rescued and refastened to the group.

I am guessing this was not an isolated incident as they were sure to put my camel in the middle of the group from then on.

Camel Trekking in the Desert

When you first head into the desert, the enormity of the harsh terrain, the continually changing colours of the sand and incredible stillness is both overwhelming and peaceful. The same could not be said for my camel, there was no peace or silence just noises and smells coming from each end.

For a few hours, you can enjoy the surreal landscape and marvel at the existence of tiny Berber camps tucked away beneath the mountainous dunes. Once you start to get the feel of the ungainly motion of a camel, the ride is relatively comfortable. Although after the 2-3 hour ride to our overnight camp, we were all glad to stretch our legs.

Sahara Desert Tents

Overnight in a Sahara Desert Camp

A night in a desert camp, under the stars, experiencing the Sahara Desert at night is a truly unique experience.

Our accommodation was one of the Berber Nomad camps that dot the Sahara. The Nomad campsites are made up of a circle of traditional woollen tents with a central fire pit. It is a simple affair with basic sleeping and toilet facilities. Each tent is lined with woven rugs and small sleeping mattresses on the floor.

Blankets are provided which are usually sufficient. Although, the Sahara temperature plummets at night so be prepared with warm clothing. You may even like to bring a small sleeping bag for extra warmth, especially during the winter months between November and March.

Sahara Desert nomad tents Morocco

Your nomad guides will prepare a typical Moroccan dinner . Most likely a hearty Tagine served with mint tea around the central campfire. If you fancy a tipple with your meal, make sure you bring it with you. We were smart enough to pack a bottle of red wine.

After dinner, your hosts will entertain you with traditional Berber music which they will encourage you to try your hand at.

Moroccan tents in Sahara Desert

Sunrise in the Sahara

Believe it or not, the highlight of any Sahara Desert tour is sunrise.

If you only spend one night in the Sahara you will most likely head back to the main hotel early in the morning, so it’s an early start and a cold one. The hotel will serve you breakfast and you can take a shower and use the pool before you head off.

At what feels like the middle of the night our trusted nomad guide wakes us by playing a small set of traditional symbols. We rug up and load our camels again to set off in complete darkness. In the cold and the dark, you start to wonder about the sense of it all and then the sun begins to rise.

You are suddenly grateful for the early start and for the long journey to get to the Sahara. The magnificent landscape of changing colours as the sun eases its way up over the Sahara dunes. The sunrise is even more spectacular than the sunset.

Tip: Don’t forget to charge all of your devices before you head off on a Sahara Desert tour. Not many of the desert camps will have charging facilities.

What to Pack for a Night in the Sahara Desert

  • A small backpack or bag – You can only take with you what you can carry in a small bag on your camel. We travel with a lightweight, foldable pack that can be shoved into our luggage when we are not using it, and it doesn’t take up too much room.

NeatPack Durable, Foldable Nylon Backpack / Daypack with Security Zippers, 20L - Navy

  • A windbreaker or light jacket for the cooler nights and mornings. If visiting between October and March, you may want a more substantial fleece and maybe some light underlayers.
  • Warm beanie – You may want to sleep in this too if it is really cold.
  • Comfortable pants or jeans to prevent chaffing while riding the camel. Leggings are also suitable for the girls as they are perfect for sleeping in.
  • Lightweight, breathable tops for the daytime. Tees and maybe a long-sleeved shirt for sun protection. Remember, you are only staying one or two nights so will not need lots of changes of clothes.
  • Appropriate shoes – sneakers or hiking boots are best. Sandals or flip-flops are no good for riding the camels or for climbing dunes.
  • A headscarf to block the sun and dust. You may want to bring a cap or wide brim hat as well.

Electronics and Gear

  • A small travel flashlight or even better a headlamp to use at night at the campsite. It is very dark after lights out, so it is helpful to be hands-free when you are packing in the morning and for the toilets during the night.
  • Camera Protection – sand is your camera gear’s worst enemy so it would pay to have some ziplock bags keeping any electronics safe. A dry pack is also useful for this, especially when climbing the dunes. If you have expensive camera gear, a special casing might be worthwhile.
  • Extra camera batteries and a large capacity external charger . Especially if like us, you take a lot of photos and video. Don’t forget your charging cords,

Anker PowerCore 20,100mAh Portable Charger Ultra High Capacity Power Bank with 4.8A Output and PowerIQ Technology, External Battery Pack for iPhone, iPad & Samsung Galaxy & More (Black)

Personal Items

  • Water – Consider at least a couple of litres, if not more.
  • Basic toiletry kit – facial wipes, small sunscreen, chapstick with sunscreen, toothbrush, toothpaste, mini deodorant, antibacterial hand wipes.
  • Any medications you might require.
  • If you want to have a drink with your evening meal, you may have to bring your own alcohol. Check with your tour group in advance so you can be prepared. And remember, you can only bring what you can carry.

Day 01: Arrive Algiers

Algeria’s capital is known locally as El-Djazaïr and was first settled more than 1,000 years ago. Its inhabitants speak Berber, Arabic and French. The city offers an alluring combination of French colonial buildings along the promenade and rolling hills against the beautiful backdrop of the Mediterranean Sea. Upon our arrival in the early morning, we are met and transferred to our hotel with time available to rest. Tonight, we have our first opportunity to enjoy Algeria’s flavourful cuisine with a welcome dinner at a local restaurant.

Overnight: Lamaraz Hotel, Algiers (2 nights) (D)

Day 02: Algiers

sahara tours albania

We start our morning by exploring the Kasbah of Algiers*, a unique kind of medina (a town/city with historical significance). It stands on one of the finest coastal sites of the Mediterranean, overlooking the islands where a Carthaginian trading post was established in the 4th century BC. This UNESCO World Heritage Site was built between the 16th and 18th centuries during the rule of the Ottoman Empire. It’s now home to a citadel, as well as a labyrinth of buildings that seem straight out of Arabian Nights. Wandering through the narrow passageways, we discover traditional houses, Ottoman-style palaces, baths, mosques and markets associated with a deep-rooted sense of community.

After our lunch in the city centre, we continue our exploration of Algiers with a visit to the Museum of Antiquities and Islamic Art, the oldest museum in Africa. Founded in 1838, the museum is home to a fascinating collection ranging from ancient mosaics and sculptures, to medieval furniture, to Ottoman-era weapons. We explore the Bardo National Museum, housed in an 18th-century villa built in Neo-Moorish style, which focuses on the country’s prehistory with fossils, Neolithic pottery, and unique examples of Neanderthal paintings from the Sahara. Evening, an elegant treat awaits us as we enjoy dinner in one of the Kasbah’s beautiful palaces. (B, L, D)

Day 03: Algiers/Timimoun (Flight)

After breakfast, we are transferred to the airport for our flight to Timimoun (departs 10:15 am and arrives at 11:45 am), where we are met and transferred to our hotel and enjoy a leisurely lunch.

A desert oasis with a population of around 35,000 inhabitants, Timimoun is known for its red ochre buildings and a unique ancestral irrigation system. We continue our exploration of the wider region of Gourara, featuring amazing desert scenery interspersed by oases inhabited by culturally distinct ethnic groups. First, we visit the town of Ouled Said and the ancient Ksour (castle) of Ighzar, which features a network of caves used by the villagers to escape the heat in the summer months. We then board our four-wheel drive vehicles, which are expertly driven to discover the sweeping sand dunes of the Algerian Sahara. At dinner, subject to availability, we will be treated to a traditional performance of Ahelil du Gourara, inscribed in UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Very few travellers have had the opportunity to witness this musical display, usually performed during religious feasts, festivals, and pilgrimages.

Overnight: Djnan Ahid Guesthouse, Timimoun (1 night) (B, L, D)

Day 04: Timimoun/El Menia/Ghardaia (Drive)

sahara tours albania

Our adventure today begins with a drive to El Menia, where we explore the ruins of ancient fortifications, built in the 10th century by the Zenata tribe, followed by lunch.

We continue to the M’Zab Valley*, created in the 10th century by the Ibadites around their five ksour (fortified cities). Simple, functional, and perfectly adapted to the environment of the Sahara Desert, the architecture of M’Zab was designed for community living. The people of this region have conserved practically the same way of life since the 11th century, including building techniques and cultural practices different from the rest of Algeria. We step back in time as we reach our final destination of the day, the region’s largest community of Ghardaia, offering traditional terraced buildings of white, pink, and red built up around a pyramid-style mosque.

Overnight: M’Zab Hotel, Ghardaia (2 nights) (B, L, D)

Day 05: Ghardaia/El-Atteuf/Beni-Isguen/Ghardaia (Drive)

sahara tours albania

An interesting cultural exposure as we wander through the cobbled streets of Ghardaia, encountering men and women in traditional dress, and also discover the town’s ancient buildings. Ghardaia is known for its heritage properties still in use to this day. At El-Atteuf, one of the oldest of the fortified villages in the region, we admire the distinctive architecture of the mosque and minarets. We will also explore the unique carpet market before driving to perhaps the most scenic fortified village of Beni-Isguen, which is not only an oasis in the Sahara, but is also a religious city where time has literally stood still. The community of Beni Isguen consists mostly of shopkeepers and those who tend to the agricultural needs of the 6,800 residents who live here. A half-hour drive gets us back to Ghardaia in time to freshen up before for our dinner. (B, L, D)

Day 06: Ghardaia/Constantine (Flight)

After a short flight of 1 hour and 15 minutes, we arrive in Constantine. Called Cirta during Roman times, this city was later renamed "Constantina" in honor of emperor Constantine the Great. It was the capital of the French department of Constantine until as late as 1962.

Upon arrival, we are transferred to our hotel with time to settle in and have a hot lunch. The 2,000-year-old city is dramatically perched on cliffs 650 meters above sea level, interconnected by a series of bridges. We explore some of these suspension bridges over the spectacular Rhumel Gorge, including the Sidi M’Cid suspension bridge, which was the world’s highest suspension bridge when it opened in 1912.

Overnight: Protea Hotel , Constantine (2 nights) (B, L, D)

Day 07: Constantine

sahara tours albania

Constantine has a lot to offer. We first explore the old town, wandering through its winding streets and getting an insider’s view of what it’s like to live in this striking city. At the Cirta Archaeological Museum, we see many priceless Roman artifacts discovered in the region. After savouring lunch in town, we embark on an afternoon visit to the palace of Ahmed Bey, the last Ottoman governor of the city. This lavish building was completed in 1835 and is perhaps the most beautiful Ottoman structure in Algeria. In 1830, after 300 years of Ottoman rule, Algeria was occupied by the French. Algeria’s life as a French colony only ended in 1962, after the war for independence that lasted for more than 5 years. We return to our hotel for dinner. (B, L, D)

Day 08: Constantine/Batna (Drive)

Today, we drive to Batna, the beautiful capital of the Aures region. The drive is about 1.5 hours. We will first see Medracen, a royal tomb which was built before 4th century BC. We then journey through the majestic Aures Mountains on our way to the Roman city of Timgad*. Timgad was created as a military colony by Roman Emperor Trajan in 100 AD. With its square enclosure and its two perpendicular routes running through the city, it is an excellent example of Roman town planning. We explore the huge library, colonnaded streets, temples, amphitheatre, and basilica. Here, we also discover the nearby Roman archaeological site of Lambaesis, before heading to Batna, which had its origins as a French military fortress in 1844. Batna is a picturesque city, featuring tree-lined avenues, cinemas, and a theatre.  Time to rest and have dinner at our hotel. After dinner, we stroll through the charming streets of Batna and meet locals sipping kehwa at the neighbourhood cafés. The Batnese people are known to be friendly and like to engage in conversation—however, many speak French much better than they do English!

Overnight: Messaoudi Hotel, Batna (1 night) (B, L, D)

Day 09: Batna/Beni Hammad/Setif (Drive)

sahara tours albania

Another interesting day as we continue our journey to the Eastern city of Setif, a commercial centre of Algeria. We stop at Al Qal’a of Beni Hammad*. Beautifully set amidst towering mountains, Beni Hammad was the first capital of the Hammadid dynasty, briefly the most important state in Northwest Africa. Founded in 1007, the city was abandoned just 83 years later, as it was threatened by invasion. Wandering through the remnants of the city’s lavish palaces and impressive architecture will provide us with an authentic picture of a fortified Muslim city. Continue to the town of Setif, where we enjoy a hot lunch at our hotel.

Afternoon is dedicated to the Setif Museum, showcasing some of the most beautiful Roman mosaics in Algeria. We also get to see the famous fountain of Setif, featuring a superbly carved statue of a nude girl, created in 1898 by legendary French sculptor Frances of St Vidal. Though public nudity in Algeria is uncommon, the statue has come to be considered a cultural treasure of the town.

Overnight: Best Western Hotel , Setif (1 night) (B, L, D)

Day 10: Setif/Djemila/Algiers (Drive)

Just an hour’s drive north of Setif lies Djemila*, known for the best-preserved Berber-Roman ruins in North Africa. This UNESCO World Heritage Site features a forum, temples, basilicas, houses, and triumphal arches that have been artfully constructed in harmony with the mountainous terrain, creating a fascinating interaction of architecture and nature. After lunch in Djemila, we continue on a 4-hour drive to Algiers. Upon arrival, we check into our hotel and enjoy dinner. Evening, we are free to walk around the capital city, located right on the Mediterranean Sea.

Overnight: Lamaraz Hotel, Algiers (2 nights) (B, L, D)

Day 11: Algiers/Tipasa/Algiers (Drive)

sahara tours albania

With enchanting scenery as we drive alongside the Mediterranean Sea, we reach Tipasa in just over an hour. This UNESCO World Heritage Site was an ancient Punic trading post in 6th century BC, and its necropolis remains one of the oldest and most extensive in the Punic world. It was later conquered by Rome and fell into decline during the Byzantine period. Today, its ruins boast an unparalleled mix of Phoenician, Roman, Paleo-Christian and Byzantine structures, alongside indigenous monuments. After enjoying our lunch in Tipasa, we visit the Royal Mausoleum of Mauretania, a 2,000-year-old tomb that is the final resting place of the last King and Queen of Numidia. A short drive and we are back in Algiers. Here, after freshening up, we are treated to our farewell dinner in the city centre of Algiers. (B, L, D)

Day 12: Depart Algiers

After an eye-opening experience of Algeria’s culture and history, we are transferred to the airport for our departure flight. Or, join our optional five-day adventure to explore Tassili n'Ajjer, known as the Jewel of the Sahara Desert, which includes two unforgettable nights spent under the starlit desert sky. See details below. (B)

Optional Extension - Explore the Heart of the Sahara

sahara tours albania

Enjoy a true adventure in the heart of the Sahara Desert, exploring the amazing landscapes of Tassili n'Ajjer, home to prehistoric art masterpieces dating back to more than nine millennia. We will have the unforgettable desert experience of staying two nights in tents under the clear, starlit desert sky, illuminated by the beautiful light of the moon.

Day 12: Algiers/Djanet (Flight)

We bid adieu to the friends we made from our main tour of Algeria before we are transferred for our flight to Djanet, via Tamanrasset. At Djanet, we are met and transferred to our hotel. A settlement of villages seemingly stuck in time set amidst a stunning oasis, Djanet is often referred to as the Jewel of the Sahara Desert. After lunch at our hotel, we explore this traditional town, visiting the Ksour, museum and market, featuring many talented traditional craftsmen, artists, and musicians that make the city their home. Dinner and overnight at our hotel.

Overnight: La Grotte des Ambassadeurs, Djanet (1 night) (B, L, D)

Day 13: Djanet/Ihrir (Drive)

Another exciting day ahead as we continue to explore the wider region of Tassili n’Ajjer*. Located in a strange lunar landscape of great geological interest, this UNESCO World Heritage Site features one of the most important groupings of prehistoric cave art in the world. More than 15,000 drawings and engravings record the climatic changes, animal migrations and the evolution of human life on the edge of the Sahara from 6,000 BC to the first centuries of the present era. The geological formations are of outstanding scenic interest, with eroded sandstones forming ‘forests of rock’. In the morning, we journey to the oasis of Ihrir, populated since Neolithic times. We enjoy lunch next to the engravings of Dider before reaching Ihrir in the late afternoon. Evening we enjoy dinner at our tented camp and relax gazing at the stars at night in the desert – truly a unique experience.

Overnight: Tented Camp (2 nights) (B, L, D)

*Please note that our tented camp travel with us to allow us to access remote regions not easily reached using standard accommodations. These are set up by our attentive staff each night. These are not luxurious tents but are comfortable. The tents are spacious with comfortable mattresses, sleeping bags, blankets, pillows, a make shift bathroom and towels.

Day 14: Ihrir/Tikoubaouine/Ihrir (Drive)

sahara tours albania

Today we take an excursion to Tikoubaouine where we view some of the area’s vast collection of prehistoric rock art and a beautiful natural arch. We enjoy lunch at Tilalen. We continue to discover more of the remarkable desert landscapes of this region, an experience that few travellers get to enjoy. We spend the evening around a camp fire in our desert camp, reveling in the incomparable views found here. (B, L, D)

Day 15: Ihrir/Djanet (Drive)/Algiers (Flight)

All good things come to an end and today we cross the colossal field of sand dunes that is the Erg Admer. We arrive at the site of Tigharghart for lunch, taking time to admire the engraving of “The Cow that Cries”, a masterpiece of Neolithic art that is more than 7,000 years old. What a place to end as we return to Djanet in time for our farewell dinner. We are transferred to the airport in time for our flight back to Algiers. Upon arrival, transfer and check in to our hotel for a good night’s rest.

Overnight: Lamaraz Hotel, Algiers (1 night) (B, L, D)

Day 16: Depart Algiers

Sahara Touring

A trip to Morocco feels like a journey to a different world , with bustling medinas, ancient kasbahs, untouched landscapes and memories to last a lifetime . For many travelers that have had the privilege to travel to this part of the world, no one would ever deny the hospitality and warmth of the Berber people.

The Experience

It is with this innate trait in mind that Sahara Touring was created ten years ago. Owned by Mohamed (Bobo) Boulfrifi and operated in conjunction with his close network of Berber family and friends who were all born and bred in the Sahara Desert. Sahara Touring strives to show our guests the best that Morocco has to offer, and that the beauty of this country can only be enhanced by the authenticity of its indigenous people.

Looking for things to do in the Sahara Desert? Look no further!

The Sahara desert is the world’s largest hot desert, spanning over 3.5 million square miles across 11 nations. It is a vast wilderness that offers endless opportunities for adventure.

Although the desert is mostly empty and there are no ‘Sahara Desert attractions’ as such, there are still plenty of things to do and unique experiences to be had.

During my first trip to Morocco , I visited the Sahara Desert on a four-day trip from Marrakech to the Erg Chebbi dunes in Merzouga. Visiting the Sahara was a huge bucket list item for me and it did not disappoint!

So, let me share with you my top 15 recommendations for things to do in the Sahara Desert.

15 Best Things To Do In The Sahara Desert

1. camping in the sahara desert.

sahara tours albania

There is no better way to truly experience the Sahara Desert than by camping under the stars. With its vast expanse of sand dunes and clear night skies, the Sahara offers a magical setting for camping and the experience will leave you feeling like a true adventurer!

You can choose to camp in traditional Berber tents or opt for a more luxurious glamping experience with all modern amenities. Either way, it will be an unforgettable experience.

I chose to stay at a very basic desert camp which was basically just a tent made of blankets and a sleeping mat on the floor.

I wanted a rugged, back-to-basics experience to feel closer to nature but I know that many people hate this type of camping! So, choose what suits you best and enjoy the desert in your own way.

Here are some of the best options for desert camps in the Morrocan Sahara:

Luxury:   Erg Chebbi Luxury Desert Camp

Mid-range:   Sunrise Sahara Camp

Budget:   Desert Life Camp

2. Camel Trekking

sahara tours albania

Camel trekking is one of the most popular things to do in the Sahara Desert. However, there is a lot of debate about whether it is ethical or not.

I did a camel trek when I visited the Sahara Desert (when I was young and uninformed) and although I did enjoy it, I now know better and would not do it again.

If you do choose to go for a camel trek, make sure that the animals are treated well and handled responsibly.

🐪 Here are some resources so that you can make an informed decision: 1 , 2 , 3 .

3. Climb The Dunes

Person in Black Shirt Walking on Desert Under Blue Sky

Another must-do activity in the Sahara desert is climbing the dunes. It may seem like a daunting task, but once you reach the top, the views are simply breathtaking, so it’s definitely worth the effort!

In Erg Chebbi, the dunes can reach as high as 160m and climbing them is a lot harder than it looks! The sand starts to slide under your feet, so for every few steps you take forward, you slide back a little.

It’s definitely a workout for your legs (my calves were burning!) but the feeling of accomplishment when you reach the top is unbeatable.

Just be sure to bring plenty of water and sunscreen with you as it can get quite hot as you are climbing but I also recommend a light jacket or thin sweater as it can be windy once you are at the top.

💁🏻‍♀️JJ’s Top Tip: The best time to climb the dunes is early morning or evening when the temperatures are cooler and the lighting is perfect for photos.

4. Watch The Sunset Or Sunrise From The Dunes

sahara tours albania

One of the most magical experiences you can have in the Sahara desert is watching the sun rise or set from the top of a dune.

The colours and peacefulness of the desert at these times are truly mesmerizing. It’s also a great opportunity to take some unique photos that will make your friends jealous! Just remember to dress warmly as it can get quite chilly once the sun goes down.

I climbed the dunes for both sunset and sunrise the following morning. Watching the sunset was my favourite out of the two, although I have to admit that climbing back down the dune in the dark was a fun challenge!

5. Stargazing

People At The Desert At Night Time

With very little light pollution and clear skies, stargazing in the Sahara desert is an unforgettable experience!

You can lay back on a blanket at your camp, sip on some hot tea, and gaze up at the millions of stars twinkling above you.

If you’re lucky, you may even catch a glimpse of a shooting star – I saw several of them during my time in the desert!

Turn off all lights and electronics and let yourself be fully immersed in the beauty of the night sky. It’s a truly humbling experience that will make you feel connected to something much bigger than yourself.

💁🏻‍♀️JJ’s Top Tip: Bring along a star map or download an astronomy app on your phone to help identify constellations and planets. I like to use the Night Sky app for this.

6. Sandboarding

Sandboarding is one of the best things to do in the Sahara Desert

If you’re feeling adventurous, why not give sandboarding a try? It’s a must-try activity in the Sahara desert for adrenaline seekers!

It’s like snowboarding but on sand dunes instead of snow. It may take a few tries to get the hang of it, but once you do, it’s an exhilarating experience! Plus, you’ll have some great stories to tell and memories to look back on.

Make sure to wear closed-toe shoes and protective eyewear, and listen to your guide’s instructions to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience. And of course, don’t forget to capture some epic photos and videos for your friends to envy!

⛺ This luxury camping experience includes sandboarding and is perfect for adventure lovers!

7. 4×4 Drive Through The Dunes

Red Sport Utility Vehicle on Brown Sand Desert

I’ve done this in both the Sahara Desert and the Wadi Rum Desert in Jordan, and both times it was so much fun and definitely an adrenaline rush like no other!

Hop into a 4×4 jeep and hold tight as you zoom over the rolling sand dunes. It’s like being on a rollercoaster but with better views! It’s a great way to cover more ground and see different areas of the desert while having some thrilling fun.

Your guide will take you to some of the most picturesque spots in the desert where you can hop out and take some photos or just soak up the breathtaking landscapes. Just make sure to hold onto your camera tightly!

🚙This 4×4 experience from Merzouga is if you want to go deeper into the desert but are short on time!

8. Quad Biking/ ATV Riding

Quad Bikes on Dune

Another adrenaline-pumping activity in the Sahara desert is quad biking or ATV riding.

Imagine zooming through the desert on a four-wheeled vehicle, feeling the wind in your face and the sand beneath your tyres. It’s an exhilarating experience that will leave you with a huge smile on your face.

Your guide will lead you through different paths and dunes, making sure to stop at some scenic spots along the way.

Don’t worry if you’ve never ridden a quad bike before, your guide will give you all the necessary instructions and make sure you feel comfortable before setting off.

This is a great way to explore the desert at a faster pace while still getting an adrenaline rush.

🏍️ This guided quad-biking tour takes you on a fast-paced adventure through the Erg Chebbi dunes!

9. Meet The Berber People

Moroccan culture

The Berber people are the indigenous inhabitants of the Sahara desert, and getting to know them is a must-do experience.

The Berber tribes have a long history in North and sub-Saharan Africa, dating back over 20,000 years before the Arab conquest of the region.

Many tours allow you to visit a Berber family and learn about their nomadic way of life, as well as their customs, and traditions. You can also have the opportunity to taste some delicious Berber cuisine, sip mint tea, and maybe even try on some traditional clothing!

This cultural exchange will give you a deeper understanding and appreciation of this unique desert community.

Make sure to book with an ethical tour company that respects and supports the local Berber people, and ensures that your money is going directly to the people that you are visiting.

⛺ Meet the Berber people on this immersive cultural experience that includes a performance of the incredible Gnawa music – a traditional blend of classical Islamic music and African beats!

10. Campfire Under The Stars

People Sitting in Front of Bonfire in Desert during Nighttime

After a day full of exciting activities, there’s nothing quite like cosying up around a campfire under the starry sky.

Most desert camps will include a campfire. You can sip on some traditional mint tea and enjoy a delicious dinner while listening to live music and watching traditional Berber dances.

You can also try your hand at playing some traditional instruments or just sit back and relax as you take in the peaceful desert night.

Just remember to dress warmly as it can get chilly at night in the desert, but the warmth of the fire and the company of your fellow travellers will keep you cosy.

11. Traditional Moroccan Drums

For a truly immersive experience, join in on a traditional Moroccan drumming session around the campfire.

You’ll learn how to play the traditional drums and be part of an authentic desert musical experience. The rhythmic beats and lively atmosphere will have you dancing under the stars and feeling like a true Berber nomad.

Don’t be afraid to let loose and have fun with the music – after all, that’s what travel is all about! I had a great time learning how to play the drums and even bought one to bring home with me.

12. Have A Sand Bath

sahara tours albania

As a unique desert tradition, some desert camps offer the option to have a sand bath . Sand baths are believed to have started in ancient Egypt and were later practised by the Greeks.

You’ll be buried up to your neck in hot sand and left to relax for about 15 minutes. This natural form of therapy is believed to have healing benefits and leave you feeling rejuvenated.

Sweating helps detox the body, while sand grains exfoliate dry skin. The weight of the sand relaxes muscles and calms the mind. Thanks to the minerals in the sand, sand baths can also treat skin conditions like acne, psoriasis, and other ailments.

Don’t miss out on this unique experience during your desert adventure!

13. Meditation And Yoga

Person Standing on Desert

The desert is a great place to practice yoga and meditation. The peacefulness of the surroundings and the open space make it the perfect place to reconnect with yourself and find inner peace.

Some desert camps offer yoga classes or meditation sessions in the morning or evening, providing a serene start or end to your day.

Take some time for self-care during your trip and join in on these activities – you won’t regret it!

🧘🏻‍♀️ The Sahara Wellness Camp runs yoga retreats in the desert, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in yoga and meditation while surrounded by the beautiful landscape.

14. Spot Sahara Desert Wildlife

sahara tours albania

While the Sahara Desert may seem barren, it is actually home to a variety of wildlife. From camels and goats to desert foxes and the adorable desert hedgehog , there is an abundance of animals that have adapted to life in the harsh environment.

During your desert trip, keep an eye out for these creatures. I saw tons of lizards and I think I even caught a glimpse of a desert hare in the distance!

Many of the camps also have cats or dogs that roam freely, offering cuddles and companionship to visitors. So don’t be surprised if you make some furry friends during your stay!

💁🏻‍♀️ JJ’s Top Tip: Always observe animals from a respectful distance and never disturb or harm them.

15. Hot Air Balloon Ride

Orange Hot Air Balloon among Blue Sky

For a truly unique view of the Sahara Desert, take a hot air balloon ride! Imagine soaring above the dunes and watching the sunrise or sunset from high up in the sky.

Some tour companies in Merzouga offer this activity as an excursion, and it is definitely worth considering. It’s an unforgettable experience that allows you to appreciate the vastness and beauty of the desert from a different perspective.

💁🏻‍♀️ JJ’s Top Tip: Don’t be afraid to ask your guide or fellow travellers to take a photo of you in the balloon. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime moment that you’ll want to remember forever!

This was an amazing tour! Anyone visiting Albania should take the time to venture solo to soak up all of the scenery and to enjoy the local food. Good Albania tailored an itenerary for my needs, handled the accomodations and rental car. They were very attentive and made haste with their responses. I highly recommend this tour company.
Great staff at Good Albania! I do believe the cars need professional checks and regular maintenance but with any issues we had the staff was willing and quick to respond with local help while we were travelling. The hotel staff almost everywhere was nice and the hotel quality varied in terms of the actual rooms, sometimes awesome sometimes mediocre. Good breakfasts daily.
The tour was amazing, we’ve seen some wonderful places! Our guide Lendi was incredible made as feel safe with his careful driving all the trip. Lendi was very knowledgeable and shared a lot of history about Albania and the places we’ve been. We never felt rushed and we were given enough time to enjoy each place! Thank you so much to Lendi who really made the 3 days excellent. To be continued as we will sure go back to Albania and book the northern tour!

sahara tours albania

The very best way to see the wonders of Morocco. We contacted Sahara Atlas Tours to do 4 day round trip from Marrakech to the Atlas mountains and desert trip. From the beginning they were very easy to deal with. The attention to details put this company ahead of all the others out there.
First class in every way I was a lone traveller in a group on a bird-watching tour with Ismail as our driver and companion. I can’t imagine a more professional, yet warm, person to shepherd us up, down, and around with a never-ending supply of patience and good-humor. Highly recommended. Thanks so much for a wonderful adventure!
No worries travel with a personal touch! From the moment we contacted Sahara Atlas Tours, Helen and Ismail made sure we were well taken care of. No concern went unaddressed and communication was professional and smooth. Our driver / guide Ali was an excellent tour guide and became our friend offering insightful commentary on everything we saw, truly enriching our travel experience. This special experience offered us an intimate view of a country we came to love.
