Beer Can Island

Also known as Greer Island, Beer Can Island is a secluded beach getaway that you won’t want to miss, and one of the best things to do in Siesta Key. Beer Can Island can be found in the northern part of Longboat Key.

Through the mangrove forests, you’ll find a beautiful beach with many trees. Some are sturdy enough to hang hammocks from. There’s also beautiful driftwood that has been bleached white by the sun.

Please note: Beer Can Island is a beautiful but fragile ecosystem! Pack out what you pack in and do not litter or leave any trash behind! Do not mark up the driftwood or take pieces home. Leave it as beautiful as it was when you arrived so that others can enjoy it too!

Crescent Beach

With white powdery sands, a visit to Cresent Beach is one of the best things to do in Siesta Key. One of the most family-friendly beaches , it’s hard not to have a good time here!

The waves are shallow, perfect for small children. The water is always a crystal-clear blue, perfect for pictures. No matter your reason for seeking some beach relaxation, you won’t be disappointed.

Point of Rocks

Tucked away beyond the shores of Crescent Beach lies Point of Rocks. A series of limestone rock formations, here you’ll find the best snorkeling in Florida! Perfect for beginners, the waters are calm and only 20 feet at its deepest point.

Point of Rocks is so exciting because of the variety of wildlife you’ll see. In addition to schools of small fish, you’ll see crustaceans, crabs, snooks, red sponges, and algae.

When you go, plan on bringing your own mask, snorkel, fins, and a diver down flag. Especially if you plan on venturing out into further waters, this flag alerts other divers you’re in the area.

We highly recommend arriving early in the day. Parking at Beach Access 12 only affords 20 parking spots. Otherwise, you’ll have to par a lot further away and take the trolley.

Siesta Key Drum Circle

One of the most beautiful things to do in Siesta Key is certainly to visit the Siesta Key Drum Circle. Completely free, all are welcome, but maybe don’t bring the kids on this one.

Every Sunday evening, dozens and dozens congregate to form a drum circle. They vary in size, shape, and sound but the result is a magical plethora of sound!

Every Sunday evening, on Englewood and Siesta beaches, the festivities begin just an hour before sunset. You’ll see fire-breathers, belly dancers, and more! It’s an incredibly special experience you don’t want to miss.

Siesta Key Village

Siesta Key Village, or just Siesta Village for short, will be your one-stop shopping destination when visiting. For the best shops, grab your wallets and head onto to Siesta Key Village, one of the best things to do in Siesta Key!

Here you’ll find about 100 shops, cafes, restaurants , and attractions. Incredibly homey, you’ll be surrounded by a sense of familiarity by the people and atmosphere.

Strap on some comfortable shoes take a stroll, and maybe stop in for a drink at one of the many local watering holes. Try Siesta Key Oyster Bar, Gilligan’s, or the Daiquiri Dec!

Sunset Point

Just outside of the Tropical Breeze Resort, you’ll find a quiet and relaxing area to just get away from it all. On Siesta Key Beach, look for Sunset Point from Siesta Key Beach Access 2.

With many manmade rock formations providing a beautiful backdrop, come to Sunset Point to watch those unbeatable Florida sunsets. Although, you should come here if you want to beat the crowds on other sections of the beach.

Be advised that there are no lifeguards on duty at Sunset Point, so always take extra caution when swimming. While there are no public restrooms or food vendors, you can always just hop over to the Tropical Breeze Resort, or pack your own picnic lunch.

Turtle Beach

The beaches in Siesta Key can get crowded. So, if you want to beat the crowds, consider heading to the south of the island where its quieter and less packed during peak times.

Find Turtle Beach in the south of Siesta Key! While its sands are not as soft and the beach drops off more quickly here, Turtle Beach will still be a great option for vacationers looking for a great Florida beach .

Because there are fewer people, Turtle Beach is also perfect for snorkeling ! You can also find great shelling here and you might catch sight of a dolphin breaching the waves! You’ll have a better chance of a sighting if you hop in a kayak , too!

Siesta Key Watersports

Sometimes it’s just easier to enjoy water sports with help of trained guides. If you’re not the do-it-yourself, go-it-alone type, consider booking a visit to Siesta Key Watersports!

On Stickney Point Road, Siesta Key Watersports gives you many nautical activity options! Charter a boat and go fishing, look at the dolphins, or ride around on a luxury catamaran.

If you really want to indulge, fork over $45 and take the sunset sail! Wine, beer, soda, and water are all included, free of charge! The sunset sail will be your best way to experience the waters of Siesta Key and get the best bang for your buck!

Siesta Key Breeze Trolley

If you don’t want to rent a car or ride a rental bike on your Siesta Key vacation, you’re in luck. The public transportation options here are wonderful!

Simply hop on the Siesta Key Breeze Trolley! It runs every 10 to 30 minutes, so you’ll never have to wait long for your ride. And with the windows down, you’ll love feeling the open breeze flowing through your hair.

The route spans from Siesta Key Village to Siesta Beach Park. From there, it travels south on Midnight Pass Road, where you can hop off anywhere you like until its last stop at Turtle Beach. The best part? It’s completely free.

St. Armand’s Circle

If Siesta Key Village and its shops are too drab for your sensibilities, then head to St. Armand’s Circle. Here you’ll find more than the traditional vacation souvenirs !

A chic and happening shopping destination, you’ll find the shops at St. Armand’s Circle have a charming, upmarket European vibe. Shop for high-end men’s and women’s fashion and accessories, home decor, and unique art.

After you’re done, the Circle is perfect place to pamper yourself with a massage, manicure, or hair appointment. Then treat yourself to drinks and dinner at St. Armand’s Circle’s many restaurants and bars, like the Columbia!

St. Bonifice Labyrinth

The St. Bonifice Labyrinth was modeled after the same one at the Chartes Cathedral in France. Open to the public, visiting the church’s courtyard is always free, and you can always visit the chapel which is always open if you need another quiet moment.

The idea of the Labyrinth is to walk the narrow paths set out on the stones. While there are no rules, the idea is to walk these paths one foot in front of the other. If you’re looking for a fun distraction for the family while also taking in some great architecture, this is the place for you!

Siestas Farmers Market

One of the best things to do in Siesta Key is to check out the area’s bustling Farmers Market. With so many fresh fruits and wares on display, you’ll always find something to take home or to snack on!

Here you’ll find the best organic, raw food in all of Sarasota. Held in the Siesta Key Village, you can find the festivities every Sunday from 8 AM – 12 PM!

In addition to providing healthy foods, many of the vendors can provide vital information regarding creating awareness about health and the natural environment.

1. Relax on the Beach

With a reputation for having some of the top beaches in the United States, Siesta Key, Florida is a tropical paradise for beach-loving families.

In fact, we’ve crafted the perfect Siesta Key vacation itinerary to make sure that you experience it to the fullest.

Siesta Key’s 8-mile-long coastline features three main beaches, Siesta Key Beach, Crescent Beach, and Turtle Beach .

Though each beach in Siesta Key is unique in its own way, they all offer the same picturesque aqua-colored water, as well as 99% pure quartz sand that is magnificently white and always cool to the touch.  

Here’s an overview of the 3 beaches in Siesta Key:

Though parking at the three Siesta Key beaches is free, it can be hard to get a spot, especially on the weekends or holidays. Plan to arrive at the beaches early in the morning or later in the afternoon (after 3:00 PM) when people are beginning to leave.

Also, don’t forget to bring along these important beach essentials that will maximize your fun and safety while on the beach!

Siesta Key Beach

Siesta Key Beach, also known as Siesta Beach, is the most popular beach in Siesta Key.

Likewise, it was rated the #1 beach in America by TripAdvisor users in 2015, 2017, and 2020.

The sugary-white sand found here is literally out-of-this-world amazing and is what draws families and vacation-goers here year after year.

The full line-up of amenities and things to do at Siesta Key Beach include:

• First aid center with lifeguards on duty year-round
• Public restrooms and showers
• 800 car public parking lot
• Full-service snack bar and gift shop
• Picnic areas with and without cover
• Gazebos and shelters that can accommodate 60-120 people.

Families can also enjoy all the following sporting activities at Siesta Key Beach:

• Playground equipment
• A tennis court complex
• Volleyball court
• A 20-station fitness trail

Tips for Visiting Siesta Key Beach

• Arrive early for a guaranteed parking spot. Peak tourist season can get busy!
• Bike to the beach so that you don’t need to waste time searching for a parking spot. 
• Rent a cabana or beach umbrella to take breaks from the Florida sun, or bring your own umbrella. 
• Use provided restrooms and showers to clean up throughout the day. 
• Ask lifeguards or beach patrol officers if you need any assistance. 
• Respect local wildlife, including the nesting birds. Keep out of protected areas. 
• Check posted weather warnings before swimming in the Gulf. 

Crescent Beach at Siesta Key

If you’re looking for something a little quieter and more secluded, head south on Siesta Key to Crescent Beach. Crescent Beach is the most private, non-private beach in Siesta Key.

This part of Siesta Key is an enclave where the beach is densely lined with condos, villas, and vacation rentals that provide direct access to the waterfront.

Midnight Pass Road provides the only (easy to miss) public access to enter Crescent Beach. From there, there’s a 25-space parking lot and walking pathway that leads out onto the beach.

Though it doesn’t have the same amenities as Siesta Beach, you can still go shelling, build sandcastles, and enjoy the ocean with a bit more privacy.

In addition, Siesta Key’s diving and snorkeling hotspot called Point of Rocks is located at the southern tip of Crescent Beach (more on that coming up!).

Tips for Visiting Crescent Beach

• Parking fills up fast, so get there early if you’re visiting on the weekend.
• Protect nesting birds and sea turtles by respecting posted signs.
• Restrooms and outdoor showers are available for use.
• Find some shade and relax under one of the many palm trees.
• Enjoy a delicious meal after your beach day at one of Crescent Beach’s nearby eateries.

Turtle Beach at Siesta Key

Turtle Beach is located on the narrow southern end of Siesta Key.

The water is just as clean and clear as a few miles north, while the sand tends to be a bit coarser than the white quartz powdery sand in Crescent Beach and Siesta Key Beach.

With that comes the opportunity to find great shells and shark teeth!

Turtle Beach, like Crescent Beach, has limited amenities. However, it does provide:

• Public restrooms
• Volleyball courts and horseshoe pits
• 300-car public parking lot
• Picnic areas
• A boat ramp – Perfect for small boats and kayaks, located on the east side of the beach that feeds out to Little Sarasota Bay
• Camping at the beach – Turtle Beach Campground is one of only a few campgrounds in Florida with direct beach access!

Tips for Visiting Turtle Beach:

• Turtle Beach has a steeper incline that drops from ankle to waist-deep water.
• Note that there are no lifeguards on duty at Turtle Beach.
• Visit Turtle Beach for a quieter beach atmosphere. 
• Bring your own beach chairs, towels, and umbrellas for a comfortable beach day.
• Pack your own snacks to keep you energized, or take advantage of the nearby concession stand. 
• Take advantage of the great shelling options along the beach shores. 
• Before your visit, check the tide schedule. Low tide is best for exploring tide pools and shelling.

2. Snorkel at the Point of Rocks

Though a bit difficult to get to, the Point of Rocks is known as the best place to snorkel in Siesta Key.

It is also one of the best family activities in Siesta Key.

The easiest way to find Point of Rocks is to walk to the southernmost end of Crescent Beach until you reach a gigantic sea wall. You must then climb along the sea wall, turn a corner, and walk down 3 steps into the water.

By now, you will see the amazing tide pools and snorkeling area complete with an array of gigantic moss-covered rocks that protrude from the ocean.

The water is no more than 5 feet deep here, and there is a vast amount of marine life that includes fish, crabs, and red sponges.

There are also large distributions of seashells, making this a perfect spot for shell picking.

Wear water shoes when visiting Point of Rocks, as the terrain is made up of crushed shells and coral. Also, the rocks can get quite slippery.

There are only 10 – 12 parking spots at the alley access for Point of Rocks which is why it is best to park at Crescent Beach and walk from there.

3. Go Parasailing!

One of the most fun things to do at Siesta Key is to take part in water sports via watersport rentals on the island.

Popular Siesta Key activities include kayaking, jet-skiing, boating, and our favorite, parasailing!

Parasailing in Siesta Key is an exciting and unique way to experience the epic scenery and aerial views of the turquoise-blue ocean that you simply won’t find anywhere else.

As you parasail, it’s not uncommon to spot dolphins, manatees, and other native seabirds and wildlife frolicking in the crystal-clear water.

4. Go Fishing!

Due to its shallow waters and multiple species of fish found in the area, fishing is another one of the best things to do in Siesta Key, Florida!

Whether you choose a guided fishing charter or prefer to find a good fishing area on your own, there are plenty of options when it comes to fishing in Siesta Key.

Options include deep-sea fishing, bridge fishing, and surfcasting for species such as mackerel, flounder, bluefish, snapper, and grouper.

Non-residents ages 16 and up require a license when fishing from public spots onshore. Licenses can be picked up at local bait shops and sporting goods stores, as well as online.

5. Attend the Siesta Key Drum Circle

The Siesta Key Drum Circle is a popular tradition that gathers large crowds of artists, dancers, locals, tourists, children, and adults for an evening of dancing and music as an act of judgment-free unity and peace.

It’s, without a doubt, one of the best things to do in Siesta Key. 

This free family fun event takes place each Sunday year-round about 1-hour before sunset on Siesta Key Public Beach.

Depending on the time of year, the timing of the sunset changes. Regardless, listen for a siren and loud drumming sounds signaling its start.

There is no mandatory involvement, but hula hoops, costumes, and instruments are handed out to onlookers, and you can both participate as well as come and go at your leisure.

Additional planning tip: The Siesta Key Drum Circle can be found south of the main Siesta Beach pavilion between lifeguard stands three and four.

Things to Do in Siesta Key Besides the Beach

One of the best things about Siesta Key is that there are plenty of dry-land activities to take part in to diversify a family vacation here.

7. Explore Siesta Key Village

Siesta Key Village is a hub of approximately 100 different boutiques, cafes, restaurants, bars, and shops located in the central part of Siesta Key.

Because it is not overly large, Siesta Key Village can be explored by simply walking around on foot.

There are a lot of fun shops with knick-knacks and souvenirs, tennis, surf, and snorkeling gear, as well as swimsuits, sunscreen, or a hat or t-shirt that says Siesta Key on it!

The best restaurants in Siesta Key Village include Another Broken Egg Cafe, Bonjour French Cafe, and Meany’s Mini Donuts for breakfast, and the Siesta Key Oyster Bar (+ live music), Baja Hub Grill, and The Old Salty Dog for lunch or dinner.

Be sure to hit up Big Olaf Creamery for ice cream and the Daiquiri Deck for drinks and live music on the patio.

All of these restaurants and bars get more and more exciting as the day wears on, making Siesta Key Village one of the best things to do in Siesta Key at night!

Beyond the hub of Siesta Key Village, there are plenty of exciting nightlife options in Siesta Key. 

For a unique experience, I recommend embarking on the Siesta Key Trolley Pub – a bar on wheels complete with fun music and tasty drinks.

The catch? You’re doing the pedaling on this pedal-powered trolley!

For a more traditional bar experience, check out Crescent Club for casual drinks, Blasé Café & Martini Bar for a sophisticated cocktail, or Daiquiri Deck for a lively atmosphere and frozen daiquiris. 

If you’re traveling with kids, we recommend you take advantage of a beautiful beach sunset, go stargazing, or visit the Siesta Key Drum Circle. 

Other family-friendly nightlife includes mini golf at Smuggler’s Cove in Sarasota or a peaceful nighttime walk, with ice cream in hand, of course!

9. Take Advantage of Free Rides

In order to lighten the traffic on Siesta Key and save you the hassle of having to find a parking spot, Siesta Key offers several free transportation and rideshare options.

The Siesta Key Breeze Trolley, otherwise known as the Siesta Breeze Trolley, offers free round-trip service from Siesta Key Village to Turtle Beach, with many stops along the way.

Likewise, Jonny’s Original Free Beach Rides operates a fleet of electric vehicles that seat six and can transport your gear, like beach chairs, coolers, and shopping items. They’ve become a tourist attraction in their own right and are frequently featured in photos of the island.

Other free, convenient, and eco-friendly transportation options include Siesta Key Free Ride and Siesta Key Frog Hop!

Additional planning tip: Some of these options require you to call and reserve a pickup time. Also, though they are free to ride, these companies are all greatly appreciative and reliant on tips.

10. Rent a Bike or Other Land Rental

If you’re trying to determine what to do in Siesta Key, I highly recommend renting bikes!

It is no secret that cruising around the island on a bike, scooter, golf cart, segway, or scooter coupe car, is one of the best things to do in Siesta Key Florida!

The gorgeous weather, friendly streets, and laid-back feel of Siesta Key make getting out and exploring the island in this way a fun and memorable event.

For longer rides and additional exercise, some of the best bike trails in the state are located right outside of Siesta Key. These lengthy and scenic trails are well worth a visit for cycling enthusiasts.

The following businesses offer dry land rentals for cruising the streets and sidewalks of Siesta Key.

Along with the mentioned amenities, many of them also offer other rentals such as strollers, beach wheelchairs, and other beach gear such as chairs and umbrellas.

They also offer pick-up and delivery from where you are staying.

11. Don’t Miss Sunset Point

Sunset watching is more than just one of the best things to do in Siesta Key – it’s a necessity!

Since the island of Siesta Key faces West out into the Gulf of Mexico, you’re guaranteed a front-row seat to watch the sun sink below the horizon.

Though there are many places to catch a sunset on Siesta Key, the most popular lookout point is at Sunset Point.

Located at the north end of Siesta Key Public Beach, this jut of land offers one of the best views of the magnificently lit evening skies.

Though you can see gorgeous sunsets anywhere along Crescent and Siesta Key Beach, Sunset Point is a great place where many other tourists come together each evening.

Additional planning tip: Keep a close eye out, for there’s a possibility that you’ll catch a rare sight known as a “green flash.”  The green flash is a quick spot of green seen at the top of the sinking sun.

Also, don’t forget to bring along a beach chair, as this is a common practice if you’re looking to relax and stay awhile.

12. Visit Local Beach Communities

When talking about the best things to do in Siesta Key, it is necessary to mention its close proximity to so many other amazing coastal communities.

Siesta Key is only a short drive from places like Sarasota, Lido Key, Bradenton, Longboat Key, and Anna Maria Island – all of which are great places to explore if you have a rental car.

Next, if you’re willing to go a bit further but are still looking for things to do within 2 hours of Siesta Key, head to Tampa Bay, Clearwater, or St. Petersburg, Florida.

If heading towards Tampa Bay, check out Busch Gardens, Lowry Zoo, and Clearwater Marine Aquarium, which are three of our favorite things to do near Siesta Key.

And finally, travel 2 hours and 15 minutes North, and you’ll find plenty of things to do in Orlando – the amusement park capital of the US!

In short, you will definitely not be at a loss for things to do when visiting Siesta Key and the surrounding area!

There is a lot to do in Siesta Key in terms of beaches, land and watersport rentals, and casual dining options. There are not a lot of fine dining options, fast food chains, nightclubs, or shopping malls.

I feel that Siesta Key is worth visiting because of its beautiful beaches. The pure white sand and aqua-blue water are very unique to this area. We also love the laid-back and casual atmosphere of Siesta Key vs. that of a big city or somewhere where you always need to be dressed up to fit in.

March through May are the best months to visit Siesta Key for the pleasant temps in the 70s and 80s. These are also the busiest months, however. If you’re looking for fewer crowds and affordability, consider visiting Siesta Key in September and October.

The Sarasota Bradenton International Airport (SRQ Airport) is 11 miles from Siesta Key. Another major airport, Tampa International Airport, is 62 miles away.

Other than visiting the shops in Siesta Key Village, there are not many things to do in Siesta Key on a rainy day. In neighboring Sarasota, however, there is a movie theater, bowling alley, aquarium, and several museums to explore.

Beautiful area that still has a small town feel. Great place to spend a quite vacation with the family. Great restaurants and night life in the area! The beaches are the best in the country if nor world in my opinion.

I agree! After visiting so many beaches here in the US, Siesta Key is by far my favorite!

What did you do for transportation? Did you rent a car or is it easy enough to navigate without a rental? We will be traveling with 3 kids 11,7 & 2.

We had a car rental that we used for day tripd to Sarasota and Anna Maria Island. To get around Siesta Key from our hotel to Siesta Key Village, parasailing, etc., we rented bikes for the week. Most people bike around the island or take the free trolley. Have fun!!!

You’re going to absolutely love Siesta Key, Florida! This beach town near Sarasota is busy and full of life, yet has a small town feel. If you’re looking for the best things to do in Siesta Key, here’s your list!

Just one visit to Siesta Key and you’ll fall in love with this island. It’s the perfect getaway for families, couples, friends’ trip (hello bachelorettes) or solo travelers. This barrier island is one of the best beaches on the Gulf Coast , and offers so much considering it’s size.

Use this guide to plan your perfect beach vacation to Siesta Key. Of course there’s gorgeous beaches, but this fun island has so much more to offer!

What you need to know about Siesta Key

First, let’s go over some important info – how to get here, where to stay, etc.

Best time to visit Siesta Key

I mean, you’re going to a beautiful beach in Florida – is there really a wrong time? Likely not.

However, if you’re looking for the absolute best time to go to Siesta Key, it’s April to May. The weather is warm but not too hot, the crowds are less than during peak summer tourism and those looking to escape the winter. And to top that, prices are affordable comparatively.

September and October are also great months to visit Siesta Key based on crowds and affordability. However, hurricane season peaks in August-September, so consider that. And if you do take advantage of the lower prices this time of year, just be sure to have good travel insurance just in case!

Of course, a winter getaway just might be the best time of year to visit. The gorgeous beach views and plenty of Siesta Key activities is the perfect warm winter vacation spot . 🙂

Closest airport to Siesta Key

The closest airport to Siesta Key is in Sarasota, Florida. That’s the SRQ airport or Sarasota Bradenton International. Fly into SRQ and rent a car . It’s about a 45 minute drive from the airport, all located in Sarasota County

By the way, when renting cars my favorite cheap car rental spot is Discover Cars . I typically save 10-30% and it’s a free service. They search the top car carriers to find the best deal. Search cheap car rates now.

You could also fly into Fort Myers or Tampa for a longer drive to Siesta Key.

Best Siesta Key Hotels

Alright, you may not want to hear this, but there’s not really big-name hotels in Siesta Key. This is awesome for the locals who want to keep the island more natural and reduce large crowds.

It also means you’ll need to look at smaller, local hotels or vacation properties. I loved the options on booking.com and ended up finding a lot of condos to rent. I absolutely loved our view and location, too!

Things to do in Siesta Key

Whether your vacation style is laid back or on-the-go, you’ll find a bit of both on this list. I’ll start off with some of my favorite experiences on the island!

1. Siesta Key Beach

Rated one of the top beaches in the USA by TripAdvisor’s Traveler’s Choice Awards™ , this beach is absolutely deserving of that title!

It’s incredibly soft sand is like walking on a fine powder. It truly doesn’t even feel like sand! The sand is actually made up of 99% quartz, making it the softest sand you’ll ever step foot on.

Siesta Key Beach is one of the most family friendly beaches in Florida for this reason, and certainly one of the best places in Florida for vacation!

It’s the perfect place to spend a day soaking up the sun, building sand castles, wading in the crystal clear water, watching the kite surfers or simply enjoying this fabulous sand.

The parking lot the size of a convention center lot, so this beach gets busy! On a Saturday afternoon, I witnessed easily over 2000 people there at once. Good thing it’s an extremely large beach!

Tips for visiting Siesta Key Beach

• Get there early or go late. The peak of the day (11am – 4pm) is the most crowded. If you want a more peaceful experience, go early or stay for sunset.
• Walk to the north or south end of the beach for the least people. We found the most space the furthest away from the main entrance.
• Take beach chairs with you. If your vacation rental has beach gear, be sure to grab it!
• Wear eco-friendly sunscreen so as it wears off, those fish and reefs are safe.

2. Play beach volleyball

While you’re at Siesta Beach, grab a volleyball and some friends and hit a few. It’s a fun way to get some exercise while taking a break from the water and the crowds.

The volleyball courts are located near the southern end of the Siesta Beach parking lot.

3. Ride the Siesta Key Breeze Trolley

Guysssss! I didn’t know there was a free trolley before I arrived on the island and man it was amazing! Providing vacationers and locals free rides, the Siesta Key Breeze Trolley runs daily 8am – 10pm .

It runs from the Village to Turtle Beach and will pick up or drop off anywhere along the route. The Siesta Key Breeze Trolley website says it runs every 30 minutes, but I found it was more like every 10 minutes! Just be prepared to hop on the last trolley of the day at least 30 minutes early so you’re not stranded.

If you have a hotel or vacation rental right on Beach Road / Midnight Pass Road, it’s an easy way to get around the area.

It’s one of the most fun things to do that’s also so simple and free. And for all ages, too. 🙂

4. Siesta Key Village

Full of shopping and dining, the Siesta Key Village is a really cool spot on the island. It’s busy with vacationers and locals alike, enjoying the quaint town square.

Take a walk around the village and find the perfect spot to eat, check out an art gallery, hang out in the village circle or grab a souvenir for a loved one.

Grab groceries for a budget-friendly getaway at the local market. Or find the perfect lunch or dinner spot during your island vacation or Florida road trip .

Siesta Key Village has some of the best nightlife on the island and it’s kind of the thing to do after the sun goes down. Lots of people enjoy the sights and sounds of this area, so just be prepared for crowds and long wait times at restaurants.

5. Bike rentals Siesta Key (favorite way to see the island)

Whether you rent bikes for the day or even an electric bike tour , this is a great way to see the sights of Siesta Key quickly. The island is completely bike-able, with a bike lane to choose on the street or just ride directly on the beach! If you want to take it easy, opt for the electric bike sunset tour.

6. Photo shoot (one of the most unique things to do in Siesta Key FL)

One of the best ways to capture memories with those you’re traveling with is by booking a photo session . Whether you’re on a family vacation, traveling with your significant other or friends, booking a photo session on these gorgeous Siesta Key beaches is a fun souvenir!

7. Crescent Beach

More white sandy beaches? Yes please!

Just to the south of Siesta Key Beach is Crescent Beach. It’s along the main strip and easily accessible via the trolley. With the main attraction on the island up at Siesta Beach, it leaves Crescent Beach desirable for less crowds.

This is a great place to hang out if you want a bit more space!

The sand isn’t quite as fine as it’s famous neighbor, and there’s a few more seashells hanging out too. But the nice thing about Crescent Beach is that it’s a short walk to several restaurants and bars, providing lots of options for entertainment.

8. Daiquiri Deck

If you’re a fruity drink lover, then Daiquiri Deck is your spot! The lineup is fully blended cocktails in early every flavor imaginable. With fun drink names like Banana in the Bush, Monkey Berry, Voodoo Love Shake and so many more, this place is a good time!

The two-story restaurant offers excellent open air seating, perfect for half-wet swim apparel. And bonus – it has great food here too. Some of my favorite blacked fish I’ve ever eaten was at Daiquiri Deck !

Oh, and did you hear open containers are legal here? Grab some drinks to go and hit the beach! I recommend taking a reusable, insulated mug to keep your drink cool. It worked out great during my days on Siesta Beach and Crescent Beach!

Okay, this on isn’t exactly on the island, but it’s so close – and so much fun – that it has to be included on this mega list!

Located on Lido Key, this kayaking experience is like no other! You’ll kayak through the mangrove tree tunnels at Ted Sperling Park and nature preserve. Bring your own kayaks or take a mangrove tour with knowledgeable guides.

You’ll want to spend a few hours on the water, which by the way, is easy to row and not too intense of a workout. Plan a morning tour or afternoon over on Lido Key exploring the natural environment.

Watch for wildlife as you kayak your way through mangrove tunnels. It’s such a cool experience!

10. Catch live music

I mean, with open containers and beachy vibes, you knew there was nightlife, right? Well this small island is mostly residential, vacation rentals and restaurants, but there are a few places to catch live entertainment.

11. Dessert for breakfast: specialty donuts

If you have a sweet tooth, are a donut lover – or both, then this is the spot for you! Meaney’s Mini Donuts & Coffee House in the heart of Siesta Village is a must visit!

With flavors like strawberry cheesecake, apple pie, chocolate delight, peanut butter cup and bavarian cream, you really can’t go wrong!

The restaurant is just a walk-up and no matter when you go there’s likely going to be a line. It’s that good.

Get them to go and grab a seat at the village center. Meaney’s Mini Donuts is a local favorite and you’ll wish you had this gem back home.

Pro tip: you absolutely must get the cinnamon and sugar donut holes. Simple – but the best they offer.

12. Go parasailing (one of the most epic things to do in Siesta Key)

If you love extreme sports or high adrenaline activities, then parasailing is for you! My favorite part was floating a hundred feet above the water, you can practically see the whole island!

There’s several parasailing tours and spots to choose when in the area. You’ll depart from Sarasota or Anna Maria Island – and get gorgeous views of the Gulf!

13. Kids playground at Siesta Beach

Alright, back at the main beach, there’s quite a bit in the area. And if you’re traveling with kids, there’s a park right at the beach, awesome for young kids.

Partly shaded, the playground is perfect for a break from the beach or even on a cool day where you don’t want to spend time in the water. Siesta Key has so many things to do for the entire family – it really seems like there’s a bit of everything here!

14. Lunch with a view

And when the kids (or let’s be honest – the adults) get hungry from all that play, it’s time for some food with a view.

There’s a couple of restaurants right on the the main public beach complex at Siesta Key Beach. There are public restrooms and showers right there too.

On the northern end of the complex is a food kiosk with drinks. Towards the southern end is a second level restaurant, which has a great view of the beach and the Gulf of Mexico.

Fill up on snacks or lunch and then hit the beach! It’s truly one of the best ways to spend a day in Florida.

15. Kiteboarding

Wondering what to do in Siesta Key? What about kiteboarding? One of the most popoular water sports in the area, actually.

I spent one windy afternoon on the beach, watching the kite boarders.  With shallow water and a beach as far as the eye can see, it’s perfect for kiteboarding !

16. Siesta Key drum circle

Ok, you’re going to love this one! Since 1996, every Sunday a group of musicians have gotten together to play music. What was once a locals thing has shaped into a locals and tourist event over the years.

Unfortunately, I haven’t spent a Sunday evening in Siesta Key so I haven’t been. But I hear it’s awesome! It’s on every Sunday, regardless of holidays or the weather. Check out their Facebook page for more updates.

The drum circle location is even on Google Maps, making it really easy to find! You’ll want to get there about 60-90 minutes before sunset to take part in the fun!

17. Day trip to Anna Maria Island

When you’re in the area, you absolutely must visit Anna Maria Island. About 30 minute to an hour’s drive from Siesta Key is Anna Maria Island. It’s got a small-town vibe that’s simply different.

There’s quite a bit of things to do in Anna Maria Island , and more than enough to fill an entire day, including more beautiful beaches. So if you’ve got some time to explore, head north to the island!

A few of my favorites on Anna Maria Island include:

• Hanging out at the beach on Bean Point
• Grabbing lunch at Poppo’s Taqueria
• Bradenton Beach and the Historic Bridge Street Pier

Pro tip: start your day early. Traffic in and out of Anna Maria Island can create quite the delay. Plus, you’ll want to find a parking spot for Bean Point early. 🙂

18. Shopping in the Village

Back in Siesta Key Village, be sure to check out the best shopping spots. If you’ve left any beach gear at home, this is the place to find the replacement.

Grab a souvenir to remember your trip – or for a loved one. Find beachy or even bohemian style dresses, craft jewelry or ocean-inspired decor. There’s even an art gallery with pieces made by local artists.

19. Ice cream at the beach (one of my favorite Siesta Key activities)

Ice cream and vacation go together like peanut butter and jelly! You’ve got to take a beach break with ice cream. In the Siesta Key Village there’s a few places to grab a refreshing cool treat. And what’s more fun than ice cream?

Walking around the village, it’s easy to spot ice cream in just a couple minutes. But a favorite in Siesta Key is Big Olaf Creamery .

20. Dolphin tour Siesta Key

What better time to see some wildlife and have an unforgettable experience than on vacation?

Well taking a boat out for half a day, watching for dolphins and seeing the local sights will be a highlight of your trip! Being on the beach is fun, but being on the water is an adventure all it’s own, too.

So take a boat tour to top off your fabulous vacation to this incredible part of Florida. If you go in the springtime, you may even see manatees, too!

21. Turtle Beach

This hidden gem is a local’s favorite. It’s on the southern end of the island, and is the last stop for the island trolley. There’s a large park with an outdoor pavilion, plenty of picnic tables and of course, the beach!

Even though it’s just a few miles down the coast from Siesta Key Beach, the sand is more course, is darker in color and has more seaweed. Turtle Beach also has a more cliff-like shoreline, which makes for a great seat and fun to play in the sand.

So if you’re looking for a bit of isolation, choose Turtle Beach!

22. Snorkel at Point of Rocks

One of the best areas to snorkel in the entire region is the Point of Rocks, which is on the very south end of Siesta Key Beach . There’s a bunch of limestone formations which create unique marine life for the area.

Whether you’re a seasoned snorkeler and have been to the best snorkeling beaches in Kauai or you’re new to snorkeling, this is a fun spot to explore for sure! The shallow waters and relatively calm waves here are perfect for snorkeling!

There’s not a lot of places to rent snorkel gear locally, so I’d recommend packing your own. This is the snorkel set I use and my kids love this gear for snorkeling.

Anyway, to get to the Point of Rocks, navigate to 6900 Point of Rocks Road and park at the Beach Access 12 parking lot.

23. World-famous sandwiches at Anna’s Deli

You might be thinking…really? A sandwich on a list of things to do in Siesta Key? But yes, it made the list. It’s literally world famous!

Family owned since 1971, the signature ‘surfer sandwich’ which includes Anna’s famous sauce. In addition to the sauce, this place is known for their hefty portions, perfectly shaved meat and fresh baked marbled bread.

Alright so the last thing on this list of Siesta Key attractions is in the neighboring town of Sarasota. Because you’re likely spending so much of your time on the island, this is a fun alternative to see the Siesta Key area a bit more.

Bigger isn’t always better, and Siesta Key’s small size is actually part of what makes it so desirable. Hit The Beach

No matter what brings you to Siesta Key, you’ll likely hit the beach at least once while you’re here. Siesta Key Beach has been rated one of the best beaches in the entire country, so it’s a great place to start. With such high praise comes pretty big crowds, so try to get here early and avoid weekends if you want a more peaceful experience. 

If the hustle and bustle of Siesta Key is too much for you, there are plenty of other spots to sink your toes in the sand. Crescent Beach is a great alternative, and while the sand isn’t as soft, the crowds are certainly more sparse. Turtle Beach is the perfect in-between, with soft sand, fewer people, and some great amenities. 

Watch A Sunset At Sunset Point

If you want to extend your beach day, one of the best things to do in Siesta Key is to catch a sunset. The west facing beaches create the perfect conditions for epic sunsets, so be sure to squeeze at least one in during your stay. 

Sunset Point is an aptly named spot for watching the sun go down. This spot sits on the northern end of Siesta Key Beach, just in front of the Tropical Breeze Resort. Note that there are no lifeguards at Sunset Point, so enter the water at your own risk. 

Ride The Free Siesta Key Breeze Trolley

Instead of renting a car and worrying about parking during your vacation, you can hop on the free Siesta Key Breeze Trolley! The trolley stops by all the main points of interest, starting at Siesta Village in the north and traveling down to Turtle Beach on the island’s southern end. 

The route follows two of the busiest roads on the island (Beach Road and Midnight Pass Road), so you’ll get to see all the sites without worrying about finding a parking place. The best part is that the trolley is completely free and runs from 8:00 am to 10:00 pm daily.

Kayak Through The Mangroves

One of the best things to do in Siesta Key is to kayak through the mangroves in Lido Key, which sits just north of the island. This is no ordinary kayaking experience – the mangrove trees have grown so dense here that tunnels were eventually created along the waterway, creating a verdant maze for paddling. 

As you paddle, you’ll have the chance to see some unique wildlife, including dolphins and manatees if you’re lucky! You can rent kayaks or stand up paddleboards from one of the many outfitters on Lido Key, or book a tour with a local guide who will help you navigate and point out local flora and fauna along the way.

Visit Siesta Key Village

Ready for a break from the beach? Spend an afternoon wandering around Siesta Key Village. Popular with locals and vacationers alike, the village features top-rated restaurants and fun shopping opportunities. 

The village sits on the island’s northwest end, and it’s the first stop on the free Siesta Key Breeze Trolley. Spend some time walking around this charming area and visit art galleries, shop for souvenirs, and grab a bit to eat once you work up an appetite.

Take A Day Trip To Anna Maria Island

If you’re running low on things to do in Siesta Key and want to switch it up a bit, take a day trip to Anna Maria Island. Located about 25 miles north of the key, Anna Maria Island is brimming with fun activities and attractions. 

There are more spectacular beaches, award-winning restaurants, a charming downtown area, and more to keep you busy for an afternoon or a full weekend.

Snorkel At Point Of Rocks

The crystal clear water along the coast makes Siesta Key a great spot for snorkeling. The beaches don’t offer much in the way of underwater scenery, but Point of Rocks is the perfect place for a little underwater exploration. 

This half-mile-long limestone slab sits on the southern end of Crescent Beach and plays host to myriad marine life, including vibrant tropical fish, small octopus, sea sponges, crustaceans, and more! Even if you’re a beginner, fear not. The water is only 20 feet at its deepest. 

Note that you will need to bring your own gear (including water shoes!) as there are no outfitters in the area.

One of the best things to do in Siesta Key is throw out a line and see what you can catch. The fishing here is excellent, whether you’re joining a fishing charter or casting out from the scenic shoreline. 

If you do choose to fish right off the beach, make sure you choose a quiet spot away from the crowds. Your best bet is the south end of Siesta Key Beach, or anywhere on Crescent Beach or Turtle Beach. Note that you will need a Florida fishing license if you’re fishing on your own.

Try Parasailing

When you’re this close to the water, you’ll likely want to spend as much time on it as you can. If you tire of lazy beach days, you can turn the action up a notch and participate in some water sports. 

Parasailing is one of the best things to do in Siesta Key, as you’ll be able to get the adrenaline pumping AND take in some spectacular views along the way. You may even spot dolphins, manatees, and local shorebirds while you’re in the air. 

If you’re not a fan of heights, there are plenty of other water sports available. You can rent jet skis, pontoons, paddleboards, and more from various outfitters around the island.

The Siesta Key Village Farmer’s Market a great spot to take a break from the beach. You can pick up some fresh produce for your stay, grab a bite to eat, or peruse other stalls with handmade art, jewelry, soap and more. 

The market sits in the Siesta Key Village Sundays from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm.

Looking for a fun way to get around the island? Rent some bikes! At just eight miles long, you can easily cycle your way around the entire island, and you’ll be treated to some great scenery along the way!

Visit The Circus

The nearby city of Sarasota has a rich circus history. The Ringling Brothers made the area their winter home in the 1920s, and the history lives on to this day. 

The Circus Arts Conservatory puts on quite a show for visitors, though it’s no ordinary circus performance. You can choose from a variety of shows, including a European-style traditional Big Top, a historic theater, or the Sailor Circus Arena. Visiting the Ringling is one of the best things to do in Sarasota .

Visit Beer Can Island

If you’re searching for hidden gems, one of the best things to do in Siesta Key is to take a trip out to Beer Can Island. It’s roughly 45 minutes north of the island, but you’ll feel worlds away on the unspoiled shores of Beer Can Island. 

This serene spot welcomes you with a gorgeous white sand beach, which is typically littered with massive deposits of driftwood. Further inland, there are lush mangrove forests, creating a stark contrast to the sparkling white beach and turquoise blue ocean. 

You can reach the island by boat or by land via the scenic Longboat Key Bridge.

Last but certainly not least, one of the very best things to do in Siesta Key is eat. After a long day of exploring, there’s nothing better than sitting down for a good meal, and the island has plenty of places to choose from.

The gorgeous barrier island of Siesta Key is situated just off the southwest coasts of Florida, where it sits pretty between the Gulf of Mexico and Roberts Bay.

A portion of it lies within the city of Sarasota , though most of it is simply a part of the larger Sarasota County.

The island’s current name didn’t come about until 1952, and it was a bit of an uphill battle to attempt to develop the island for tourism and other purposes. 

Siesta Key, which is technically a census-designated place, spans a relatively small area of just about 3.5 square miles, within which are four primary districts.

As you’ve probably guessed, the key is most famous for its stunning beaches, gorgeous marine life, and amazing watersports opportunities, though there is a fair bit of history and culture to explore as well.

1. Siesta Key Beach

Siesta Key Beach is considered one of the best beaches in all of the United States in America – and even the world!

It’s family-friendly and is among the perfect places to go for people of all ages to enjoy all the common and essential beach activities.

Florida is simply filled with beaches along its coast, so for one of them to be considered the greatest is a huge compliment and an indication of a good place to be.

Siesta Key Beach is renowned for its delightfully soft sand that consists of 99% quartz.

This creates a sensation like walking on fine powder, and you’d be hard-pressed to find softer sand on any beach!

You’ll get to build sand castles, swim or wade in the water, sunbathe, and do all sorts of watersports.

The waters are a stunning cobalt blue that looks right out of a postcard!

The beach is open from early to late, with peak hours from 11 am to 4 pm.

It’s one of the free things to do in the area, so expect it to be quite crowded, especially on weekends.

Amenities are quite modern, with showers, a volleyball court, and bike racks, and lifeguards are on duty during most busy hours.

2. Parasail Siesta

If you’re looking for fun things to do in Florida , parasailing is one of the most popular high-adrenaline activities that you can enjoy at Siesta Key.

Numerous spots across this barrier island in Florida have companies that offer tours and experiences related to this extreme sport.

Some are situated within the island, and others can be found at Anna Maria Island or Sarasota.

Not sure what parasailing is?

Also known by other names such as parakiting, parascending, and even paraskiing, this is a recreational kiting experience.

You ride a securely-attached canopy wing called a parasail wing that looks like a parachute, and you are then towed behind a vehicle of some kind.

On the beach, that vehicle is most frequently a boat.

The tow rope lifts you into the air as the boat speeds off.

Parasailing will allow you to witness beautiful sweeping views of the gorgeous Gulf.

Aerial views of the cerulean ocean beneath will allow you to spot native seabirds, dolphins, and manatees that frolic and live in the habitat.

3. Point of Rocks

One of the top 10 places to visit to snorkel in all of Florida, Point of Rocks is a stunning location formed from a collection of limestone rocks that serves as a hotbed for various sea creatures.

These formations may also be made of quartz and molluscan grindstone, and the whole place is believed to be around 4,300 years old.

It’s never too crowded and almost feels like a private piece of land, so it’s amazing that it’s one of the island’s free things to do!

Point of Rocks isn’t the easiest spot to get to, but avid snorkelers will find it to be well worth the trouble.

It’s easiest to access the site from Crescent Beach.

Head to its southernmost end and keep walking until you hit a huge sea wall.

You’ll have to then climb along that wall until you can turn a corner, and then it’s a three-step walk down into the water.

Be aware that the rocks can get pretty slippery.

Once you’ve done this, you’ll be able to spot Point of Rocks fairly quickly.

Tide pools and rocks covered in moss are visible, some sticking out from the depths of the ocean.

The water here is just about five or so feet deep at most, and in most places, it only gets to waist level.

Still, it is home to an enormous range of marine life, such as crabs, sea sponges, and fish.

The trolley runs from Siesta Key Village to Turtle Beach, with some stops that you can be dropped off at or picked up from along its route.

You can’t find a beach, sunset or the very lively village anywhere else. We’ll share with you our tips and recommendations on things to do in Siesta Key, where to stay, and where to eat!

Where is Siesta Key?

Siesta Key is a complete slice of paradise just a short drive from Sarasota. This 8 mile-long white sand island is on the Gulf of Mexico. Siesta Key is actually not part of the Florida Keys which most people assume. We’re lucky its only a 3 hour drive and visit as much as we can.

Things to Do in Siesta Key

This is why you come! You won’t find sand like this anywhere else. There a a few main beaches on the key but Siesta Key Beach is most popular. It has life guards, a large parking lot, concessions stands and volleyball courts. This is also where the big firework show happens on the 4th of July.

2. Kayak the Mangrove Tunnel

If you like kayaking, check out the Gulf Coast mangrove kayak tour on little Sarasota bay. This guided kayak tour, you’ll have a high chance of seeing a manatee, dolphin, stingrays and many birds.

3. Moat Marine Aquarium

Sarasota’s Moat Marine Laboratory and Aquarium is a great day trip to see manatees, sharks, sea turtles and otters. Lots of touch pools, including sting rays and small sharks. It’s only a 25 minute drive from the key and worth it. Especially with kids!

4. Turtle Beach

Turtle beach is another quiet escape on the south end of the key. It’s a great location for shelling and calmest in the morning. It’s also a perfect spot to kayak and paddle-board. Turtle Beach has a campground and is one of the few places on the island where you can safely and legally set up camp and sleep under the stars. 

5. Sarasota Food Tour

Explore Sarasota’s Downtown food scene with a guided tour! A 3.5-hour walking tour with 5 stops and 8-10 diverse menu items creating an amazing night of good food, drinks, and local history.

6. Siesta Key Sunsets

Our favorite thing to do in Siesta Key is see the sunsets. West coast of Florida has the best sunsets. Anywhere on the beach you’ll be able to see the sunset however the best location is Sunset Point at Beach Access 2. Every evening there’s a flag ceremony too. After dinner we like to grab our beach chairs and a bottle of wine and head back to the beach to watch the sky glow. Its magical.

7. Siesta Key Trolley

Is the Siesta Key Trolley free? Yes! There’s actually multiple free options to get around the key – The Siesta Key Breeze Trolley, Johnny’s Original Free Ride, Siesta Key Frog Hop, and Siesta Key Free Ride. The trolley is our kids kids favorite. With these free options you won’t have to worry about driving, parking, or getting to your spot!

8. Drum Circle

Every Sunday at sunset people gather to jam on the beach as the sky turns hues of pink and orange. Join the fun or enjoy ultimate people watching – dancing, drumming, living life. The Siesta Key drum circle has being happening for 20 years.

9. Beach Activities

Snorkeling, skim boarding, wake boarding, paddling boarding, even sand-castling! We spend most of our time at the beach and that’s because the activities are endless. Our kids could spend hours digging with a shovel and net finding shells and sand crabs. Bring the beach gear, its worth it!

9. Water Activities

Siesta Key is a perfect spot for boating, fishing, and jet skiing. You can rent boats for half or full days. There are sandbars nearby where you can anchor up and float or choose to watch the Sunset in the gulf. Parasailing is also a fun option.

10. Meaney’s Mini Donuts

This tiny donut stand is in the middle of the village in front Morton’s grocery store. The line that forms out front is worth the wait! Fresh fried sugary mini donuts made to order. Grab a box of fresh sugar bombs and an iced coffee, your day is made!

11. Siesta Key Big Pass Sandbar

Big Pass sand bars is one of the most popular places for boaters. It’s only accessible by water, located north of Siesta Key and just south of Lido Key. You can find great shells and live sand dollars.

12. Beer Can Island

An Instagram-favorite, on the north end of Longboat Key is picturesque with white sand beaches and fallen trees. You can get to this secluded island by boat or a 40 minute drive from Siesta key. It’s also known by Greer Island.

13. Siesta Key Oyster Bar

Siesta Key Oyster Bar also known as SKOB by the locals. I can’t count how many times we’ve been here. Causal beachy spot with great vibes. Their known for their seafood, cold drinks & live music. Bring dollar bills to decorate and staple to the walls. The interior is basically wallpapered with visitors dollar bills. Kids love it.

14. Look For Sea Life

There are so much wildlife in to see. We’ve been lucky enough to swim with Manatees twice. We’ve caught crabs, seen fish & sting rays. Even saw a baby shark over a sand bar. Your likely to see dolphins as well, usually early AM or evening or boating.

15. Big Olaf Ice Cream

After dinner,  Big Olaf   homemade ice cream is a must. It’s been on the key since 1982. The ice cream is made at a local creamery near Sarasota’s Amish village. The line can get long but it’s worth it! My husband has been going here since he was a little kid growing up on the key!

16. St. Armand’s Circle

Just a short drive off the key, St. Armand’s Circle is a fantastic place to shop and dine. There’s over 130 shops in the circular outdoor plaza and great restaurants. We love to eat at Columbia, get the famous “1905” salad.

17. Crescent Beach

Crescent Beach is more private and low key than Siesta Key Beach. Still boasts the beautiful white sand and turquoise waters just a lot less crowded. Its just south of the public beach and only has 2 public access points and a small parking lot.

18. Downtown Sarasota

Only 15 minute drive from Siesta key, downtown Sarasota sits right on Sarasota Bay. Beautiful views with more places to shop and dine. Right at the bay there’s a park with a splash pad for the kids. For those looking for more price conscious options to stay near the key this is your spot.

19. Dinner at The Cottage

The Cottage  focus’ on seasonal and local ingredients. Get the Wonton Tuna Tacos & the bronzed black grouper. They have a great outdoor space with live music. Reservations are required. After dinner & drinks we recommend the short walk back to the beach to catch the sunset.  

20. Daiquiri Deck

With over a dozen different frozen daiquiri options, the Daiquiri Deck is the place to cool off with a frozen cocktail. Every weekend this restaurant and bar has live music and it’s open until midnight. There are 2 spots on the key, one is right in the village and the other is on the south end of the key by the bridge. Come during happy hour for 1/2 price drinks!

21. Point of Rocks Snorkeling

Point of Rocks is where to snorkel in Siesta Key. It’s on the south end of crescent beach. Here you can see snook, crabs, and coral. Keep your eyes out above water too for dolphins and manatees. Tip: with limited parking so get there early or Uber.

22. Shopping in the Village

The Village is in the heart of the key and has a wide array of shops and restaurants -something to fit all needs. For chic bohemian clothes checkout Island Trader Boutique. The Sea Shanty which is right next to Morton’s grocery store has a little bit of everything – from jewelry, sunglasses and seashells. Make sure you stop off at the Beach Bazaar for silly souvenirs, beach wear, and kid toys. Every Sunday from 8am-noon is the Siesta Key Farmers market with over 20 local vendors.

Where to stay

The prime locations are on the beach and close to the village – see our map! The Village is where a lot of the restaurants and nightlife is. Over the years we’ve stayed at a whole array of places! Some make me laugh just writing this. It’s full of rentals. You won’t find a large resort here and that adds to the character of the island. We almost always find a rental on Airbnb or VRBO. However, a lot of rental properties also have their own sites too. You can find a small one bedroom on the beach to a 4 story condo with a pool a rooftop patio. Its also the perfect vacation to do multiple family trips as there are places for large groups.

• How large is Siesta Key Island? It’s an 8 mile long barrier island just off the Sarasota on the gulf of Mexico.
• What is the best time to visit Siesta Key? March – June are ideal. Before Hurricane season and temperatures are great. You can go year round. Being Floridians, we tend to like the warmer waters so August water temperatures are at the highest 86 degrees.
• Is Siesta Key worth visiting? If you love the beach, beautiful sunsets and many amazing food and drink options, yes it’s worth visiting! Its a great spot for everyone, especially families.
• What is Siesta Key known for? It’s award winning white sand beaches, turquoise waters, and colorful sunsets. It’s so beautiful, MTV even made a show about it.

During your vacation, this guide will help you find the best things to do in Siesta Key, Florida.

Escape to one of the best beaches in the United States with a visit to Siesta Key, Florida. We are spilling our list highlighting some of the best things to do during your visit to Siesta Key Beach, Florida ; whether you are a beach bum seeking white sandy beaches or a foodie wanting to sample the best local cuisine, we have you covered.

Siesta Key Beach is perfect for a family beach vacation, romantic getaway, or friend’s retreat! With endless attractions, beautiful vacation rentals, and delicious restaurants, this barrier island sees many visitors return year after year.

Before diving into the best things to do during your visit to Siesta Key, we need to cover a few essential things before you pack your suitcase. This page contains affiliate links.

A Guide To Siesta Key, Florida

Siesta Key is a barrier island outside Sarasota, Florida, and it hugs the Gulf of Mexico, offering dazzling turquoise water alongside pristine beaches. Summer is the peak time for tourists as many families flock to the area to enjoy a well-deserved beach vacation, and I found that the summer months get too hot outside with lots of humidity.

When to Visit Siesta Key, Florida

The ideal time to visit Siesta Key is in April or May after the spring break crowds have left and before the peak summer tourism season arrives. The weather is warm, prices are more affordable, and attractions are less crowded.

The winter months are also a great time to visit, especially for those seeking respite from a harsh northern winter. If planning a visit during the late summer/ early, remember it is peak hurricane season. I recommend purchasing travel insurance or checking your rental agreement to see the procedures in the event of a hurricane.

How To Get To Siesta Key, Florida

Depending on where you are coming from, many visitors opt to fly. The nearest airport is Sarasota Bradenton International Airport (SRQ). From the airport, the drive time is roughly 45 minutes, depending on traffic. Rental cars are available through a variety of different companies.

Tip:  Book your rental car in advance. When I say in advance, I mean when you buy your plane ticket or sooner, rental cars are a hot commodity these days, and you can get caught without one if you don’t plan.

Bringing your vehicle has many perks, especially when you don’t have to pay for airfare or rentals. Not to mention to can pack way more things without the fear of going overweight on your luggage. For those driving, the closest major highway is I-75 which will take you into Sarasota, and there is a gas station in Siesta Key Village.

Getting Around Siesta Key

Siesta breeze trolley.

The Siesta Key Area Trolley is regulated through the Sarasota County Area Transportation known as the “SKAT.” It is free for all riders. The Trolley operates seven days a week, including major holidays, between 10 am and 10 pm.

The Siesta Key Trolley transports passengers between Turtle Beach and Siesta Key Village in 30-minute intervals. There are three trolley stops at Siesta Key Village, Siesta Key Beach, and Turtle Beach.

Taxis are also available in the area.

Parking In Siesta Key

The best area for parking is the Siesta Key Public Beach Parking Lot. With nearly 200 parking spots, it is easier to find an available spot since people are always coming and going. However, I advise arriving early to ensure a parking spot and snag a good place at the beach.

There are also 12 public beach access lots with various parking spots available. Most of them are tiny, with only 25-30 spots.

There are metered lots throughout Siesta Key, so ensure to pay the meter if you park in one of these lots.

Where To Stay In Siesta Key, FL

Vacation rentals.

Many guests to Siesta Key often are on the hunt for a condo or vacation rental. There are tons of beautiful properties, houses, and condos available on Airbnb and Booking.com.  Siesta Key Beachside Villas  and  Tropical Breeze Resort  are popular rentals.

Budget Tip:  When booking on Airbnb or VRBO, check if a resort or property management company owns the unit you are looking for. Often it is cheaper to book directly through a company than on Airbnb. We have saved upwards of $500 by doing this.

Up and down the coast, Siesta Key has a variety of hotels ranging from full resorts to budget-friendly accommodations. Those not looking to stay on the beach but drive-in may find better options in Sarasota. A popular hotel is the  Hyatt Residence Club Sarasota .

Booking.com

Camping along the beach is a perfect way to spend a vacation and one of the most affordable. Turtle Beach Campground offers 39 campsites with full hookups. It is a lovely campground within steps to the beach, laundry facilities, picnic area, and WIFI.

Best Things To Do In Siesta Key, Florida

Visit the top florida beaches.

Grab the beach chairs, and pack a cooler for a fun day for the entire family. The best things to do in Siesta Key are to take advantage of the white sand beaches, shallow waters, and beach activities. These beautiful beaches are a great spot to spend your next vacation.

Many beaches offer volleyball courts, public restrooms, and picnic tables.

Siesta Beach/Siesta Key Beach

Awarded #1 beach in the United States in 2020 by TripAdvisor’s Traveler’s Choice Awards, visitors find it difficult to leave the sugary sand, turquoise waters, and soft waves coming in from the Gulf of Mexico. Siesta Beach is also known as Siesta Key Beach.

The Siesta Key Public Beach has a public parking lot, picnic areas, a beach-themed playground, bathrooms, and concessions. The Siesta Trolley makes a stop at the beach, making it easy to get to from anywhere on the island. The beach is also close to Siesta Key Village, which has plenty of restaurants and shops.

Crescent Beach

Roughly one mile south of Siesta Key Beach in beautiful Crescent Beach. The beaches are identical, except Crescent Beach has very little parking. Look for beach access #12. Crescent Beach seems more low-key, making it the ideal place for relaxation and families.

Turtle Beach

In the southern portion of the island is Turtle Beach . Known as a sea turtle nesting habitat, it is not uncommon to encounter loggerhead sea turtle nests. Nesting season runs from May to October, so all guests must remove any beach gear, umbrellas, chairs, etc., from the beach area. In addition, lights from nearby resorts and rentals must be dim enough that they can’t be seen from the beach.

The sand at Turtle Beach is slightly coarser than the other beaches found at Siesta Key. Paddleboarders and kayaks are frequent here, as the ocean is relatively calm and the wildlife in the area is abundant.

Turtle Beach is located off Midnight Pass Road at the south end of Siesta Key at 9000 Blind Pass Road. Turtle Beach Pier is also here!

Venture to the neighboring barrier island to catch the stunning sunset Lido Key Beach . A quick walk from St. Armond Circle will have you on the beach with your toes in the silky sand. The beach is large, offering plenty of space for everyone to enjoy the picturesque sunset.

If you are visiting during the day, there is a hiking trail and foot showers at the public access points for Lido Key Beach. The beach does have public parking available.

Conservation Activity: Clean Up The Beach

During your next evening stroll along the beach, make a point to take a bag to pick up trash you stumble across. It was appalling the amount of garbage left behind.

We implemented this with our daughter during our nightly walks, discussing the importance of conservation. She took her new clean-up job seriously to protect the sea turtles and other wildlife in the area.

Siesta Key Drum Circles

Are you looking for the best live music experience? Every Sunday evening, roughly an hour before sunset, drum circles gather on three local beaches. It is an event that brings together people from all walks of life, as a diverse group forms a circle around the beating drums as if by magic.

Where To Catch The Drum Circles

• The Siesta Key Drum Circle gathers on the public beach, to the left of the concession stand. 948 Beach Rd, Siesta Key, FL 34242
• The Englewood Drum Circle can be found at 2100 North Beach Rd, Englewood, FL 34223.
• Nokomis Drum Circle is located at 207 Casey Key Rd, Nokomis, FL 34275. This group gathers on Saturday and Wednesday evenings.

Anna Maria Island

A quick drive up the coast will leave guests in the small “Old Florida” beach town of Anna Maria. The quaint, picturesque town is only 7 miles long but offers plenty of fun in the sun. Spend the day at Manatee Beach, visit the Rod and Reel Pier, or shop along Pine Avenue.

Locals will warn you that once you visit, you may be booking your next Florida Vacation to Anna Maria Island!

Kayak In Jim Neville Marine Preserve

A great way to get up close with the natural wildlife in the area is by kayaking through the Jim Neville Marine Preserve. The shallow water is ideal for manatees, seabirds, and other local wildlife. Kayak rentals are available through Siesta Bike and Kayak.

Best Things To Do In Siesta Key On The Water

Rent jet skis.

Hop aboard your very own jet ski for a thrilling adventure. Jet skis can be rented in 1-4 hour time increments or all-day options depending on who you rent through. Most rentals come with gas, lifejackets, and wet suits.

Additional Water Sports

Siesta Key Watersports  and other water sports places offer additional attractions such as Dolphin Tours, Sunset Cruises, Fishing Charters, Sunset Tour, and Parasail rides. It’s always worth asking if they have a special or discount if you book more than one activity with them.

Parasail Siesta

Siesta Key Beach may be gorgeous from the beach level, but wait till you see it from up high! Kids as young as five years old can enjoy this adventure! Often the boat ride to and from the parasailing is just as enjoyable as the flight itself.

Go Kayaking In Siesta Key

One of the most popular tours in Sarasota is the Guided Kayak Mangrove Tunnel Tour. The tour takes place off Lido Key, with guides taking you through Sarasota’s exotic mangrove tunnels and into Sarasota Bay. Frequently, guests will see manatees, dolphins, and other wildlife.

Go Snorkeling at Point of Rocks

One of the best snorkeling spots in Siesta Key is Point of Rocks at the southern end of Crescent Beach. It is a collection of limestone rocks formation that attracts a variety of sea life. To get there, you have to walk to the very end of Crescent Beach. You will have to walk alongside a barrier wall, which means you will have to get in the water (think waist high), walk along the wall a good minute until it ends at a small secluded beach.

In all honestly, it looks like a private beach, but I didn’t see a sign. However, there are plenty of tourists visiting. It is a great place to collect shells, sea life, and schools of fish.

Find The Best Place To Get Ice Cream

While I am happy to give two excellent recommendations of excellent ice cream stops in Siesta Key, a personal mission is to try as many a possible. Depending on the length of your stay, have a hunt for the unique flavor, best vanilla, or sundae!

Grab Ice Cream At The Orange Octopus

Get a scoop of handmade slow-churned on-site ice cream at the Orange Octopus. They offer a wide variety of unique flavors such as Kentucky Honey Bourbon, Ooey Gooey Brownie, and More! Milkshakes, sorbet, and coffees are also available. 

Big Olaf Creamery

The locals guided us to Big Olaf Creamery for the best ice cream in Sarasota. Located in St. Armands Circle, we found ourselves indulging in delicious creamy cones that were the envy of those passing by. Keep in mind that Big Olaf’s is a  cash-only  establishment.

Spend Time At Siesta Village

A short walk from Siesta Key Beach is the Siesta Village. Stroll through the village to find plenty of great things to do, from restaurants to boutiques. The local post office, a supermarket, gas station, and beauty salons can be found at Siesta Village.

Travel Planning Tip : Some of the restaurants do take reservations. I highly recommend making them weeks in advance to ensure you get a table when you want. 

The Cottage

Whether you are looking for fresh seafood or a juicy hamburger, The Cottage at Siesta Key Village is one of our favorite hangouts. A lush patio makes the ideal spot for sipping on their signature sangrias while the sound of live music floats through the air.

While everything on the menu is extraordinary, we highly recommend the New England Lobster Roll, The Grouper Sandwich, and the Billionaire Burger. They also offer a kids menu; my daughter says to get the burger! It’s the best she has ever had!

The Hub Baja Grill

The scene at the Hub is a lively one with a patio full of colorful umbrellas, margaritas alongside delicious Baja cuisine. Munch on chips and salsa while the live music entertains. Then choose an entree from endless tasty options. Finish off your meal with an order of delectable churros.

Siesta Key Oyster Bar

Loving known as the “SKOB” by locals, this Oyster Bar serves up upscale pub favorites such as wings and burgers alongside fresh oysters. Handcrafted cocktails and an incredible Sunday Brunch paired with an island vibe make the SKOB a must during your visit to Siesta Key.

Daiquiri Deck

If you are on the hunt for a fun spot to grab a drink, the Daiquiri Deck is the place. We opted not to eat here; however, many people had good things to say, and the food we saw coming out looked good. They have lots of seafood options along with oysters.

There are two Daiquiri Deck locations in Siesta Key. One in the Siesta Key village and the other in the South Village. You will find additional locations in St. Armands, Venice, and Anna Maria.

Siesta Key Farmers Market

Support local by paying a visit to the Siesta Key Farmers Market. The Farmer’s Market occurs every Sunday from 8:00 am-12:00 pm at 5104 Ocean Blvd in Siesta Key Village.

Venture Into Downtown Sarasota

Owen’s Fish Camp

For some of the freshest seafood on the west coast of Florida, pay a visit to Owen’s Fish Camp. The vibe is hard to beat. Feeling as you have been transported into the bayou, bluegrass music fills the air, while the smell of roasting oysters makes your mouth water. The old tire swing, fishing gear, and ambiance feel like you have entered an old fishing shanty.

The food was incredible and fresh. Once again, I don’t think you can go wrong with anything on the menu. We ordered the catch of the day, which was superb.

TIP:  Owen’s Fish Camp does not take reservations. Be prepared to wait or arrive when they first open. We came at 4:30 pm on a Thursday, and the wait was already at 20-30 minutes.

Siam Gulf Sarasota

Sushi is king at Siam Gulf in Sarsota. Tucked away in a strip mall this trendy restaurant has all the Japanese and Thai vibes. Indulge in a scrumbcious Pad Thai or enjoy rolls of fresh sushi made to order.

Mote Marine and Laboratory

Marvel at sharks, sea turtles, manatees, and endless undersea curiosities. One remarkable thing about  Mote  is it is more than an Aquarium; and it is a real laboratory where actual scientific research happens. There is an abundance of hands-on exhibits, educational displays, and special presentations with a focus on learning.

Keep in mind Mote has multiple buildings that you get admission into with your ticket to see all types of marine life. Follow the paths or ask an employee who is always willing to help get you to where you want to go.

St. Armond’s Circle

About a five-minute drive from Mote Aquarium is St. Armands Circle. This plaza is full of shops, restaurants, and spas. We recommend parking closer to nearby Lido Key beach so that you can easily walk between the two.

St. Armands Circle is known for its unique luxury shopping experiences, but they also have plenty of shops to grab that perfect Sarasota souvenir. Family-friendly restaurants and places to grab a sweet treat can also be found throughout St. Armands Circle. We grabbed a box of macarons from Le Macaron French Pastries.

The Columbia

Dine at the oldest restaurant in Sarasota that the same family has owned since they opened in 1959. While the original restaurant can be found in Tampa, which opened in 1905, this Florida staple serves up traditional Spanish dishes. Start your dinner out with the Original “1905” Martini or one of their famous sangrias. Sample a variety of their tapas or select one of their many delectable entrees.

Shark Tooth Hunting

You may know that Sarasota has great beaches for beachcombing to look for shells, but did you know you can also find shark teeth?

Some of the best beaches to look for shark teeth are at the south end of Siesta Key, near Palmer Point Park and Midnight Pass. This was one of our kids' favorite things to do in Siesta Key.

Drum Circle on the Beach

If you’re in Siesta Key on Sunday evening, you’ll hear the Siesta Key Drum Circle before you see it.

Dozens upon dozens of percussion enthusiasts bring out drums around sunset on Siesta and Englewood beaches to play hypnotic rhythms. Come and listen, dance, or join in the drumming.

Parasailing

For a unique view of the island plus a thrilling experience, parasailing can’t be beat. For the ultimate thrill, try the “free fall” experience, where you float down to the water only to be thrust back into the sky.

Flag Ceremony

At Patriot’s Pier at Sunset Point, there are flag ceremonies every day at sunset. There’s something very beautiful and moving watching the flag be retired at sunset on the beach. 

Water Activities for Everyone

As you can imagine, the crystal blue waters of the Gulf of Mexico are an amazing location for sport fishing. Charter boats can take you out to look for fish like pompano and tarpon.

But fishing around Siesta Key doesn’t have to be limited to a boat charter. If you’re fishing at one of the Siesta Key piers, you don’t even need a fishing license – it is covered with a blanket license. 

If you have a need for speed, rent a jet ski and take on the open ocean. Many locations offer different packages. Some even offer tours by jet ski to look for marine life like bottlenose dolphins.

If you’re looking for a more tranquil tour of the waters of Siesta Key, a kayak rental is well worth the time. This is a wonderful family activity, and guided tours can take you to observe wildlife around the smaller islands. 

You can certainly book a snorkeling tour (ask at the desk where you’re staying) but you can also just take a snorkel and fins and swim into the crystal clear water in Siesta Key!

I’ve been a couple of feet away from manatees swimming in the Gulf of Mexico! Though they are gentle giants, never reach out and touch a manatee as they are protected animals.

One of the best places to snorkel is around the shallow waters at Point of Rocks in the southern end of Crescent Beach.

Boogie Board

The waters around Siesta Key are calm enough for beginners to explore the fun of water sports like boogie boards and skimboards. You won’t find huge waves here, but there’s plenty of fun to be had. Rent a boogie board or purchase one and pass it along to someone else checking in on the island.

Paddleboard

There’s something almost meditative about paddleboarding. If you’ve never tried it, this is a sport that is relatively easy to pick up. The only danger is once you start, you won’t want to stop!

This area is a great place to paddle as the waves are usually gentle on the Gulf Coast beaches.

Any way you spend your day on Siesta Key, you’re going to want to grab something to eat. There’s a bit of everything on the island, and the hardest part of it will be just picking one place for a meal. 

Here are a few of my favorites to try, if you need help selecting where to eat. Tip: For those who love fresh seafood, the grouper is amazing in Florida!

Farmers Market

Every Sunday morning, Siesta Key Village hosts a local farmers market. The farmers market has local fresh produce, candles, artwork, food, and entertainment, and is a fun way to start your day.

Waterski Show

The Sarasota Ski-A-Rees Water Ski Show offers exciting entertainment for the whole family.

There are bleachers to sit in or you can bring your own chair.

Dance The Night Away at the Beach Club

Looking to spend a night out with friends on the dance floor? This is the spot. The Beach Club has popular DJs, local bands, a large dance floor, strobe lights and lasers, and plenty of special events to keep things interesting.

The Club has two bars and a drink cart and can craft your favorite cocktail or make you one of their specialties like the Key Lime Pie Martini.

There’s outside seating, but when the band or DJ is on (often until 2 a.m.), the dance floor is the place to be. If you want a dose of Spring Break while visiting Sarasota, this is the place to be for a wild time!

For those not into the dance scene, the Club features all available football games on Sundays. Daily Happy Hour runs until 7 p.m. and includes all kinds of specials. Check out the calendar for ladies' night.

Located across from Turtle Beach, it doesn’t get more Floridian than this!

First, Turtles Restaurant is accessible by boat (at marker 48 on the Intercoastal Waterway) and by land. It offers open-air dining and live entertainment.

But the food is the real reason you’ll want to stop here. Grilled or blackened Gulf fish, like grouper or mahi mahi, will melt in your mouth.

Their fried baskets with items like shrimp, chicken wings, and even buffalo cauliflower are a bargain. 

Make sure to save room for a slice of Key Lime Pie.

If you’re not too hungry, just grab some of their appetizers like pretzel sticks and queso or fish tacos, and enjoy one of more than a dozen specialty frozen drinks.

The menu offers a plethora of seafood. The oysters here are delicious, but we love the clams, too.

After a day in the sun at the beach, taking a gelato break is a must.

Made in Rome Gelato offers 45 different flavors of gelato made with organic ingredients.

It’s rich, creamy, and flavorful. In fact, it’s the best gelato I’ve ever eaten (better than Rome!).

Siesta Key Rum Distillery

Siesta Key Rum at Drum Circle Distilling, is technically in Sarasota, but it’s close enough that it is worth it to make a trip.

You can take a tour of the distillery, and you’ll want to get some of their specialty blends, like coffee rum or toasted coconut rum. Sign up for tours on the website.

Location: 2212 Industrial Boulevard, Sarasota

Hours: 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Closed on Sunday.

I have stayed here as well and it's a fabulous property. I would consider this luxury hotel at budget prices in comparison to other hotels.

When heading to Florida for your Siesta Key vacation, always wear sunscreen, even when it's cloudy. You can get a sunburn at any time of year, even with overcast skies.

Arrive early to make sure you can find a parking spot at Siesta Key Village or the public beaches. This is especially true on weekends when public parking can fill up early.

If you want to enjoy the beach in the evenings, arrive early (before sunset) or late (after sunset).

Be sure to make a reservation in advance for dinner. You should be okay as a walk-in for lunch, but you never know during the season between November and April what kind of waits you’ll look at for the dinner hour.

Most hotels will have beach chairs you can use, but you can also find places that rent them along with umbrellas, kayaks, boogie boards, and stand-up paddleboards.
