• There's room for improvement contentwise. Around half of the mentioned sights aren't relevant to riverside attractions. Plus, the c ontent could dive deeper into the city's history, culture, and be more historically correct instead of telling stories, trivia and myths.
• I encountered some issues with the headphones - the first set was defective, the second set had a cable that was too short, and the third set was uncomfortable and hard to wear.

• The ship was impressive with a spacious 3-level design and a cocktail party atmosphere . Passengers were seated at 2-person tables .

The Top Deck

• The top deck offered stunning, unobstructed 360° views . It was the perfect spot for taking photos and enjoying the sights . This is the best place to be during the warmer months.

‍ The Mid and Bottom Deck

• There are two indoor decks with  plenty of seats and tables  where the atmosphere is  cozy and inviting .
• The first passengers to board tend to get the best top deck spots, so it's  worth arriving early   if you want a prime spot .

The Drinks Refills

• The  servers were   attentive , constantly  refilling glasses  with prosecco as soon as they were empty.
• Self-service lemonade  is available in two flavors — regular and one with a strange cucumber taste.

The Assorted Food Platter

• The optional assorted food platter for 10€ wasn't what I was expecting.
• It didn't match the advertised images and wasn't gourmet but ordinary , including simple fruits and vegetables, cheese and ham with two sauces, and a pastry dessert. The portion size was smaller than expected.
• Save your money and skip the platter.
• The loudspeaker  audio guide was inaudible  due to the passengers crowding out the narration.
• They increased the volume upon my request, but the  audio guide's content was too basic .

❓ Should I book river cruise tickets in advance? Is it worth it? 💡 Yes  — It's worth reserving your ticket in advance to ensure your place on the ship, although you can purchase tickets in person.

This is Budapest's only boat tour offering an authentic 19th-century historic cruise experience . The ship is a replica of the Hungarian paddle steamer , the Kisfaludy, which operated between 1847 and 1887 on Lake Balaton thanks to the initiative of István Széchenyi.

The cruise includes a welcome drink and an English audio guide (via loudspeakers).

The ship features an open-air panorama deck at the front (the best place for 360° views), a semi-covered rear area , and a small top deck near the captain's cabin.

There's also a must-see maritime museum on the bottom deck.

In summary, this cruise provides a high-quality sightseeing experience infused with historic flair you can't get elsewhere in Budapest.

19th Century Maritime Museum

• On the lower deck, there is a captivating maritime museum that displays the lifestyle of 19th century sailors .

• The small top deck has four tables , but the chimney and captain's cabin somewhat block the view .

• During the cruise, you can enjoy an English-speaking audio guide through loudspeakers.
• The guide was synchronized with the attractions we passed by and provided brief introductions, trivia, and historical information about the landmarks.
• Sometimes loudspeakers can get drowned out by the noise of a crowd, which makes them hard to hear. I didn't experience this during my daytime cruise, but it may be more challenging to hear during the more popular night cruise .
• In between the narration, there's a pleasant classical piano music playing.

While they  don't offer  amenities like an  audio guide or complimentary lemonade , the ship is modern and well-maintained, with  excellent views  of Budapest's top sights.

The  top deck  offers both open-air 360° and weather-protected roof-covered sections. While the  lower level  is cozy and comfortable, it's  best to head upstairs  to enjoy the views.

Reaching the  meeting point is inconvenient , and the  ship can get crowded  due to its popularity, especially on the top deck.

Overall, Portum Lines offers an  exceptional river cruise  experience at  great value , perfect for those seeking a fun atmosphere.

About Portum Lines

Portum Lines is a solid company operating since (at least) 2014. Their offerings are pretty slim compared to others but still superb in quality.

• During the boat tour, you can enjoy the flawless cityscape of Budapest from certain spots with clear 360° views .
• The cruise itinerary covers most of Budapest's landmarks, except the National Opera and the Palace of Arts.

• The ship is spacious and well-maintained , with two levels similar to Legenda's sightseeing ship.

• The top deck is divided into three areas - the front, middle, and back.
• The front and back sections are open-air , with perfect 360° views - these are the best places to be.

💡 Tip: The best open air seats go fast! You must arrive early and be at the front of the line to snatch them.

• There is a wide indoor section in the middle with tables and chairs lining both sides near the windows.
• Although the views from here are good, they are even better outside in the open air section.

• The lower level is comfortable, cozy, and spacious, with heating and air conditioning to provide a pleasant experience, even on rainy or cold days.

5. No Frills Budget Sightseeing Cruise

When it comes to Budapest cruises, Silverline Sightseeing Cruise is a solid choice with friendly staff and a comfortable meeting point, but it doesn't quite stand out from the crowd.

Unlike most cruises, Silverline's cruise ticket does not include a welcome drink . However, the price is on the low-end . If it were not for their out-of-the-way location, I would recommend the Portum's similarly cheap cruise in a heartbeat.

With a relaxed 60-minute cruising time, this ride offers a leisurely pace that allows you to take in the sights and enjoy the moment.

There is an audio guide app available in 6 languages (English, Hungarian, German, French, Spanish, and Italian).

In summary, Silverline's sightseeing cruise provides a leisurely tour of Budapest's iconic landmarks on the Danube. While not exceptional, it offers a decent experience.

About Silverline Cruises Ltd.

Silverline is a solid company operating since (at least) 2011. They have a decent range of cruise offerings, and run popular cruises in the sightseeing category.

• Like on any boat tour in Budapest, the cityscape is breathtaking throughout the trip. However, Silverline's ships have a roof and support columns on the top deck which means they do not provide a clear 360° view .

• The ship itself is decent , but it doesn't claim the title of the most modern or spacious vessel on the waters. It gets the job done without being overly impressive.
• Silverline rotates boats frequently, so you may not get the same one I did.

• During my trip, I was on the larger two-level boat that previously had rows of seats, but has since been replaced with tables and chairs (according to photos).
• The smaller boat now has the rows of seats , which I found to be cramped and lacking in legroom .
• Both ships have roofs and support columns which partially block the view .

• The main deck offers comfort with ample space, heating, and air conditioning . While indoor views are average , better panoramas await at the front chairs or the open-air section.
• Welcoming and friendly staff at the entrance make a positive impression. I haven't interacted with the ship's crew so I cannot comment on that.

• During my cruise, we made a stop at Batthyány tér (Buda) , even though no passengers got on or off.

Enjoy a 80-minute cocktail cruise on the Danube with Silverline. Sip up to three delicious cocktails as you cruise aboard a cozy, spacious double-decker ship with splendid views. 

As usual, the  itinerary  covers all the iconic sights from Margaret Island to the National Theatre and Palace of Arts.

While there is no audio guide on board, you can download Silverline's audio guide app . There's a lack of shelter from the elements while boarding, but it's not a big deal (unless you're caught in bad weather).

Opened in 1849, the Szechenyi Bridge was the first permanent bridge connecting the Buda and Pest sides. Named after István Széchenyi, a revered Hungarian Statesman, the bridge was designed by English engineer William Tierney Clark. Today, the wrought-iron chain suspension bridge is an important monument and tourist site.

Margaret Bridge

Margaret Bridge is noted for its unusual three-way design. The bridge connects Buda and Pest while also linking Margaret Island. Designed by French engineer Ernest Goüin, the construction of the bridge commenced in 1872 and was completed in 1876 and stretches across a length of 607.5 meters.

The 2.5 kilometers long Margaret Island can be accessed via Margaret Bridge and Arpad Bridge. It is a famous recreational area in the city with promenades, cycle paths, and picnic spots inside the Island. It also houses ruins dating back to the Middle Ages. Margaret Island is known for its parks, swimming pools, and musical fountains.

Hungarian Parliament

The Hungarian parliament is a palatial neo-gothic style building located on the Pest side of the city. Opened in 1902, it's the largest building in Hungary. The building has 691 rooms and is around 96 meters in height. Inside the Central Hall of Parliament is where the Holy Crown of Hungary is kept.

For the best panoramic views of Budapest, you should visit Fisherman's Bastion, established in 1851. It is located near Buda Castle. Built in the Neo-Romanesque style, the building's main facade is 140 meters long. The Bastion was first built in the 1700s and guarded by the guild of local fishermen, hence the name Fisherman's Bastion.

One of the most stunning palaces in all of Europe, Buda Castle, belonged to the Hungarian Royalty. A majestic expression of Baroque-style architecture, the grand palace today is a World Heritage Site. It is home to the Hungarian National Gallery and the Budapest History Museum. During World War II, the Castle was almost destroyed, but thanks to restoration efforts, it retained its beauty.

More expensive hotels are located near Castle Hill . There are excellent value hotels near Matthias Church and cheaper hotels in Pest . Wherever you stay you will get deals that put you near both the centre of the town and your port terminal. Many hotels have spacious rooms and Wi-Fi, as well as their own restaurants, serving a taste of Hungary. They will all have en-suite facilities and TV’s.

Look out for deals that include breakfast or other meals. Higher end hotels often have good deals on offer, especially at different times of the year.

Docking Locations – Pier

Cruise boats arriving in Budapest dock on the PEST side of the river , a few minutes away from city centre hotels. Ships tie up at Belgrad Rakpart Port ( Mahart – International Passenger or Drava Street Port ) usually between the Liberty (Szabadság) and Chain (Széchenyi) bridges. There are plenty of docking positions. One of the main operators is Viking River Cruises . The Viking Pier located between the Elizabeth Bridge and the Chain Bridge. The port and terminal of Belgrad Rakpart is in Pest and here you can step straight off your cruise ship into the heart of Budapest . River cruise boats dock at the port and terminal in Budapest all year round. From the Spring Festival, through the huge Sziget Rock Festival in August to Christmas markets in Vorosmarty Square, there is always something happening.

Buda on the West bank

Budapest spans the River Danube. Many beautiful wrought-iron bridges link the two sides.

In Buda, on the West bank, a funicular takes you up to Castle District hanging above the city. Medieval courtyards and cobbled streets make this a pleasant area to explore.

Visit the famous Matthias Church, where Emperor Franz Josef was crowned to the strains of Liszt’s music. Climb the 700 centuries old ramparts to be rewarded with magnificent views over both the River Danube and the River Pest.

Pest on the East bank

Pest, on the East bank, is more modern with a buzzing nightlife. The Vaci Utca shopping precinct is traffic free and lined with boutiques and jewellers, a great place to look for deals in souvenirs.

The Old Jewish Quarter is here, but little remains other than the Great Synagogue, with its Hall of Heroes, Jewish Museum and the Holocaust Memorial Room. The State Opera House, elegant villas with gardens and expensive shops line Andrassy Street. Here you can enjoy a coffee in Franz Liszt Square or Heroe’s Square.

Young children will enjoy Varosliget Park, where they can run around the lake and feed the ducks. Nearby is the famous Hungarian Circus and one of the oldest zoos in the world. Whilst in Budapest try some of the stews of Hungary, such as goulash.

Goulash is heavily flavoured with Hungary’s national spice, paprika. For elegant coffee and torte step into Gerbeaud. This looks much the same as it did 150 years ago, with its polished wood and chandeliers.

Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport (IATA : BUD) is the main international airport, formerly called Budapest Ferihegy International Airport. The airport is situated approx. 10 miles or 16 km from the downtown area hotels and the cruise piers. You can easily travel to Budapest city center by public transport (metro). Taxi’s, AirportShuttle Mini-Buses and regional buses are also available. Ferihegy train station, which is the nearest railway station, can be reached by bus. trains operate from Ferihegy to and from the Nyugati railway station in central Budapest Hungary.

Budapest on Foot – Acessible Highlights from the Viking Cruise Ship Port

My favourite city on the Danube is easily Budapest. Besides being the city where I met my girlfriend (10 years ago!), the bridges and architecture are the best on the river. It is also an incredibly walkable city. On my last visit, I toured around with City Sightseeing’s Budapest Hop on hop off bus . Although it was a great way to cover a large area in a short period, Budapest on foot is the best way to experience Hungary’s capital city. Budapest was the final stop on my trip down the Danube with Viking Cruises and I was eager to see and show off what the accessible highlights are from the Viking Cruise port.

Starting Point

With our Viking cruise ship tightly tucked next to the Chain Bridge, we were in the perfect spot to explore Budapest from. To be honest, it was pretty tough to leave my private balcony with views like this. Can you blame me?

To cover as much of the city as possible (and to get me out the door) start your day seeing Budapest on foot by tagging along on the city tour excursion. Viking Cruises does a great job getting its guests out and about and makes the most out of each stop with free excursions and activities. In Budapest, this was a guided bus and walking tour. The bus tour took us past city highlights such as the Hungarian Opera House, Hero Square, and the Pest Synagogue (Europe’s largest) before dropping us on top Castle Hill for a guided walking tour.

Buda Castle

Buda Castle was first built in the 14th century but, like the rest of the city, was heavily damaged during World War II. At that time it’s secret tunnels below served as a hospital. Postwar it served as a bomb shelter for the Soviet-controlled city. Today, the tunnels are open to tourists and offer a great view of life during Nazi and Soviet reign.

My Rhine Getaway Experience and What to Expect on a Viking River Cruise

Above these tunnels is the castle and the beautifully tiled Matthias Church. Now if you’re taking a tour down the Danube with Viking Cruises , You will probably be over churches by this point. I strongly recommend you do not skip Matthias Church . It’s unique tile work really makes it one of a kind and the colours inside and out are beautiful.

After touring the church our group started making its way back to the ship. We decided to continue our Budapest on foot tour by taking in the views before heading down the hill via the 146-year-old funicular . Note: Pay a couple of euros for access to the upper viewing platform next to the Matthias Church for fewer selfie sticks in your postcard photos!

Chain Bridge

Budapest is known for its beautiful bridges. With 8 fascinating ones that cross the Danube , it is easy to see why. Sadly, several were destroyed by the fleeing Germans at the end of World War II. This includes the Chain Bridge, arguably the prettiest of the bunch. Thankfully it has been rebuilt to its original state. A walk across it is a must-do while visiting the city. Really, you could spend a day crisscrossing Budapest on foot, exploring places like Margaret Island and Gellert Hill.

After a pit stop back at our Viking Cruise ship for lunch, our Budapest on foot tour concluded with a walk around the country’s parliament – one of Europe’s finest.

Perched on the Danube, the Hungarian parliament building is a stunner. Constructed from 40 million or so bricks, it is also the 3rd largest in Europe. Although tours inside are available, we chose to continue on by foot. In doing so we took in the beauty of the grounds, fountains, and sculptures that surround this masterpiece. We also made a stop at the Budapest Uprising exhibit. Located on the southeast corner of the parliament building, this underground museum does an excellent job sharing the story of Hungary’s uprising in 1956.

Down the Danube

Our Budapest on foot tour continued along the Danube promenade. The riverside path is worth a stroll to say the least. Be sure to stop at the Shoes on the Danube Bank art display. This installation tells the sad story and shares the memory of Hungarian Jewish men, women, and children that were executed and pushed into the Danube during WWII.

Great Hall Market

26 minutes and 3 bridges later we arrived at the Central Market Hall. Note: if the distance is too great for you, the city trams run the same route along the river and has stops near the Viking Cruise ship port and in front of the market. Hop on the #2!

Along with Riga’s Central Market, this historic building is one of my favourite markets in Europe. Don’t miss a visit to the top floor where locals dish out delicacies like goulash and lángos, a Hungarian flatbread topped with sour cream, cheese, and onions.

Vaci Street

Post-market tour we made our way back to our Viking Cruise ship via Vaci Street . This pedestrian-only street is lined with major brand name shops, cafés, and restaurants. Stop for a beer or coffee with a side of people watching out front of St. Stephen’s Basilica. A great way to spend an hour or afternoon!

Home Sweet Home

Seeing Budapest on foot from the Viking Cruise port is easily doable and I highly recommend it. It’s a great way to see the city at a slow and relaxing pace. Combining this route with the Viking Cruises included excursion, Budapest’s yellow streetcars, and the metro system makes it easily achievable for less mobile guests too. Those looking to make more of their time in Budapest should consider taking a local cooking class or take in a show at the historic opera house. Either way, there is much to experience in this vibrant European capital city.

Start of a Viking Cruise in Budapest

I journaled our entire 15-day cruise from Budapest to Amsterdam. It was fun to record what a European river cruise is really like, the good, the bad and … you know the rest. You’ll find some travel tips along the way to make your own experience easier.

Check in day. This afternoon marked the start of our 15 day Grand European Tour from Budapest to Amsterdam. Our river cruise adventure would begin on the docks in Budapest.

While other passengers were stressing over flights and airport transfers, we were already in town. We arrived early for a number of reasons:

• Flight delays happen. Few things could be worse than missing the boat. What a nightmare that would be!
• We wanted to explore Budapest on our own. We took the opportunity to enjoy the city’s famous thermal baths, as well as see all of Budapest’s top sights. (It’s one of the cities we’d return to, though next time we want to also visit other parts of Hungary.)
• We could sleep late, have a late breakfast, and walk to the ship at our leisure.
• We could get over any jet lag before the cruise.

Where do river cruise ships dock in Budapest?

It also gave us time to find the ship, which was already in town because the cruise itinerary includes 2 days in Budapest. You can find the entire river cruise itinerary here.

All Viking ships dock on the Pest side of the Danube, so we booked two nights at the Budapest Marriott. The hotel overlooks the river and is just a few blocks from the Chain Bridge.

We were pleasantly surprised that this is one of the hotels that Viking uses for pre- and post-tours. Of course we immediately asked where our ship was docked, but it turned out that we didn’t need to.

Bragi was incredibly easy to spot. She was docked directly next to Széchenyi Chain Bridge, tethered to her sister ship, the Vili.

Actually, they were practically underneath the bridge. I’d bet that a risk-taker could probably jump onto the ship terrace. (That’s not a challenge. Landing on those chairs would hurt.)

ⓘ FACT: As the first bridge to connect both sides of the city, Szechenyi Chain Bridge is one of Budapest’s most beloved landmarks.

Danube cruise, Day 1 in Budapest

I don’t know who was more excited about our upcoming adventure, Dan or me. Either way, we both woke up early on the day of the cruise, even though Saturday is our weekly “down day.”

The official check-in time for a Viking River Cruise is 3:00 p.m., so we requested the latest hotel check out time possible. We took our sweet time that morning, savoring the hotel’s delicious breakfast buffet and scenic view for as long as we could.

Finally, we could delay it no longer.

Despite the official check-in time, Viking accommodates early arrivals, knowing flights arrive at all hours of the day. Having nowhere else to go with luggage in tow, we rolled our carry-ons down the sidewalk to the ship that would be our home for the next two weeks.

Welcome aboard!

Before we knew it, the crew were rushing over to take our backpacks and carry-ons. “Is that all you have?” they asked, incredulous. You should have seen their surprised smiles when we nodded yes!

“You need to teach all our other passengers how to do that!” they joked, and our bags followed us aboard.

No sooner had we crossed Bragi’s threshold than we were greeted with a cool washcloth and a refreshing drink. The entire check-in process took only a few, brief moments. Just enough time for them to check off our names, hand us our room keys, and take our bags with a promise that we would find our luggage in our stateroom.

Meanwhile, they said, we were welcome to enjoy a light lunch upstairs on the Aquavit Terrace. And perhaps later, we might also fancy joining a jet lag buster afternoon walk around the area? It all sounded good to us.

Standing nearby was a man dressed in a nautical-looking outfit and a name tag saying Felix Anheier. We introduced ourselves and shook hands. Felix introduced himself as the Hotel Manager and smilingly joked that he was Bragi’s token German. It seems Viking’s HR must have high standards, because he had worked in an exclusive luxury hotel in Bavaria before signing on with Viking.

Out and about in Budapest

Our “jet-lag buster” walking tour was a brief, 45-minute overview of the area around our ship. It was just enough for passengers to get oriented and comfortable exploring on their own later, without fear of getting lost.

St. Stephen’s Cathedral

Next, we headed to Saint Stephen’s Cathedral, hoping to see and photograph his mummified right hand.

Unfortunately, the cathedral was closed to tourists, because they were having a series of private ceremonies. Apparently, May is the traditional month for weddings in Hungary.

Hungarian wine bistro

Hungary is known for its wines and the Tokaj region is even a UNESCO site. With such a stellar reputation, we couldn’t resist stopping into a bistro-wine bar on our way back to the ship.

Whenever we travel, we like to sample a few local varieties of vino. We enjoyed the experience, sharing and sipping our selections slowly and watching the passersby until we had to go.

Shopping in a Budapest grocery

After settling the bill, we sauntered to a grocery store we had passed earlier.

We like to look around food stores because you get a good idea of what the locals prefer to eat and prices of their foods. Some of the produce and meats are different, too.

Yes, my friends, we consider that fun . And you know what? We discovered that Budapest’s food is super cheap!

The market was doing a brisk business as we entered.

Viking allows passengers to bring wine on board to enjoy, and we decided to pick up a bottle as wine is readily available in shops. Th is store had quite a nice wine department, but you should have seen us attempting to decipher the grapes and varieties!

Dan really enjoys recreating our favorite foreign dishes for our friends at home. So, while he was distracted with the wine options, I sneaked off to another aisle. I secretly wanted to pick up a packet or two of Hungarian paprika as a little surprise souvenir.

Meeting the locals

Do you know, I looked and looked on the spice rack, yet could not find the paprika anywhere! No paprika? In Hungary? Impossible! I couldn’t believe it. They use that as much as salt, for Pete’s sake!

An old woman ambled over, basket in hand, and I watched her select a packet of something. Nope, not what I needed. I touched her arm.

“Paprika?” I asked her, gesturing. Happy to help, she began to search for it, then called a shocked “Nincs paprika?” to a clerk. He rushed over to rescue us.

“Oh, there you are.” Dan’s voice caught me by surprise just as the clerk pointed to a separate section with three rows of packets of the precious red powder. “ Köszönöm .” I thanked the old woman with the one Hungarian word I knew, and she left with a smile.

Busted. I asked him to select the packets we’d bring back to the U.S.

ⓘ TIP:  Both wine and paprika make inexpensive souvenirs. For the best selection and freshness, buy them in a local grocery store, but go for the pricier brands because the cheaper ones are imported.

First evening on our Viking cruise

Before dinner, people gathered in the Lounge to introduce themselves and meet Dewi, Bragi’s delightful (and pretty) Program Director. She was there to give a Welcome Briefing. She’s Dutch and her name is pronounced Davey. It’s the Indonesian version of the Hindu devi, meaning “goddess.” What a conversation starter!

ⓘ TIP: Head to the lounge if you want to meet other passengers. The Sun Deck and the Aquavit Terrace are also good, but those are more weather dependent.

Dewi gave us an outline of what to expect on our cruise, and told us about optional tours we could take in the next few days. We also got a heads-up that Viking would ask for our feedback at the end of the cruise.

After the briefing, we met our Cabin Steward. Florin is a friendly Romanian chap. He asked us if we had everything we needed and requested that we please let him know if we needed anything else.

Taking advantage of his offer, I asked him for a couple of bathrobes. He offered to bring slippers as well. Well, slippers hadn’t occurred to me but, “Yes, that would be nice. And do you have any firmer pillows?” The ones on our beds were way too soft, not to mention small.

Call me picky, but seriously. Those things would be flattened into pancakes within minutes of meeting our heads. I made a mental note to mention the inadequate pillows when it came time to fill out the Guest Survey.

What’s on the Viking dinner menu

We met the Maitre d’ before dinner, a smiling Filipina named Ria. Viking asks all passengers to fill out a survey sheet before the cruise, so she already knew about our dietary restrictions. Viking accommodates most special diets, and Ria promised to do all she could to ensure our meals would be perfect.

If tonight’s menu was any indication, everyone was going to have a hard time maintaining our weight. The menu options are quite varied, and they even include vegetarian and regional specialty dishes.

More importantly, our food was absolutely delicious. Here’s our menu. What would you order?

The drinks package

Some cruise lines include unlimited alcohol in their fare. Viking, however, does not. Wine, beer, soft drinks, and juices are available with lunch and dinner, but at other times you have to pay for them.

I think that’s reasonable, as not everyone is a drinker. Viking does what it can to keep the cost of the cruise down.

That said, Viking does offer a Silver Spirits Package that entitles you to unlimited sodas, juices, beers, and premium liquors and wines whenever you want them.

The standard wines at dinner come from Viking’s own Mörwald Winery. Non-drinkers might find that adequate, but we wanted to a wider variety. Eastern European wines are hard to find in the U.S. and they have different grape varieties. Besides, we were on vacation and wanted to enjoy an afternoon cocktail and perhaps an after-dinner drink as well. Maybe even two.

Your mileage may vary, but we prefer to pay one flat fee up front and not have to worry about a hefty final bill.

Back in our cabin

While we were at dinner, Florin had left a copy of today’s Viking Daily on our bed. The ship’s daily newsletter has a schedule of tomorrow’s activities and lots of information about the next day’s destination. We also foundd two robes, slippers, and larger, firm pillows.

It’s the little things that can make or break an experience, wouldn’t you agree?

If you arrive the day of your cruise, Viking will meet you at the airport and bring you to the ship. However, if you arrive earlier you will need to make your own transportation arrangements.

Nice trip. Did the Romanian chap not recommend you to visit the neighbor country? Tried to look for articles about it on your website, but you don’t seem to have traveled to Romania yet. I recommend you Bucharest, Transylvania and the Danube Delta, which has an unique eco-system, and is situated right before the Danube merges in to the Black Sea! 😉

Thank you for the tips, Vlad. Sadly, we haven’t been able to fit Romania into our schedule yet. It would take a while to visit, because it has so many wonderful things to do. Since we went, Viking has added a Danube cruise between Budapest and the Black Sea. Perhaps we will be able to sail it someday.

So sensible to arrive a few days early not only for flight delays, but luggage can get lost and what a nightmare to head off on a cruise without that. Plys you really got to explore your departure.

So true, can you imagine how difficult it would be to retrieve your luggage after you had sailed? Yikes!

All of these sound fabulous! I will arrive a couple of days before boarding a cruise too. I cannot imagine the stress of being against the clock in case something goes wrong. I like the surprise you gave the crew with your light luggage. I can imagine the things those poor guys have to carry.

IMO it’s crazy to bring tons of luggage. It’s much simpler to bring only the things you are sure you’ll need and avoid “just in case” packing. After all, they do have stores in Europe!

I went on a Viking cruise on the Danube in December, and I think our stop in Budapest was my favorite. It’s such a beautiful city, especially viewed from the river area. The bridges are just fantastic as well as hearing about the cities amazing history. Thanks for sharing — JR

Linda, your post reminded me of my trip to Budapest a couple of months ago. I love that city so much! It seems you did the right thing to give yourselves a couple of days there before boarding the cruise ship. Was this your first time in Budapest?

Actually, Anda, it was our first time in Hungary. We managed to fit an awful lot into 3 days and all I can say is Wow. I feel we just touched the surface of what Budapest has to offer. Must. Go. Back.

Just curious: Do Viking’s river cruises offer more time for exploring than a traditional at-sea cruise ship? I don’t enjoy cruising because I don’t like being so limited for time and forced to eat on board but I’m considering trying a river cruise at some point. What is a typical daily schedule like?

I’d say yes, they offer more time for exploring. River cruises focus on time in port instead of time on board. Plus, every day has at least one stop (nothing like days at sea) where you can get off and see the sights.

What type of proof do you accept for student tickets? Will an English University ID card suffice?

Hello Gemma, yes, international Student IDs (including British student cards) are accepted and entitle you for a student discount on Budapest river cruises. Please note that not all river cruise programmes have student prices, for instance, the 4 course dinner cruises only offer adult and child tickets. The number of the guests on the 10pm Budapest Cruise varies depending on the size of the actual boat itself. The maximum capacity of the the smaller ship is 200 people, while the biggest boat has a capacity of 400 people. On weekends it is usually the biggest one, Europa that cruises.

Please do not worry, it is never overcrowded.

Hello, just wondering whether this area is safe at night for a sole female traveller. I am staying approximately one km away.Will it be safe to walk home after the 10pm cruise or are there taxis nearby?

Hello Cheryl, I would say that the city centre is quite safe even at night, but if you decide to get a taxi instead, the cruise hostesses will be happy to call you one after the cruise.

Can I buy a ticket just before the course ?

Dear Mateusz, yes, you can buy your Budapest cruise ticket on the spot before the cruise, but please note that in this case, unfortunately, we cannot guarantee your seats. If you wish to secure your places on the cruise, I would recommend you to purchase your tickets online in advance, especially if you are interested in a cruise with catering or a weekend day (Fri / Sat / Sun)

Hello.  I see that the meeting place is at the Danube Palace, not the dock.  Is there a reason for this?  Will we be bussed to the dock after checking in?  The dock is closer to my hotel than the palace is so I’d prefer not to walk further to check in just to walk back.  Thanks.

Dear Kelly, the 10 pm cruise typically leaves from the Pest side from Pontoon number 2, right near Spoon restaurant (which is a standing ship restaurant). But the dock is occasionally assigned to the Buda side, near Batthyany Square. From the meeting point, a hostess will escort you to the dock (a few minutes by walk usually). Myself and my boyfriend will be in Budapest between 31st January-4th February. I was wondering whether the 10pm cruise with drinks will be available between these dates?

Two questions: 1. During the 1.5 or 2 hours onboard for the 10pm night cruise, will the lights of all the buildings and architectures be turned off? 2. I couldn’t find the docking plan for Mar 29, 2015 on either side, which means that there’s no 10pm night cruise on that day. Am I right?

Hello Donald, the sights are illuminated during the 10 pm cruise, which is 1.5 hour in duration. The 10 pm cruise is unfortunately not scheduled for March 29 (it is available on March 28 though). Here are 10 new itineraries for 2024 and 2025 that are taking river cruising beyond the familiar, including several on recently launched or soon-to-debut river ships.

AmaWaterways' 7-night Wonders of Colombia and Magic of Colombia

Love South America but have already cruised the Amazon? Consider AmaWaterways ' newest ship, AmaMagdalena. Debuting in January 2025, the 60-passenger ship will sail two alternating seven-night itineraries year-round on Colombia's Magdalena River, traveling from Cartagena to Barranquilla and vice versa.

With the Wonders of Colombia itinerary , you'll board AmaMagdalena in coastal Cartagena, a popular Caribbean port on Panama Canal transits that you can now also enjoy on a river cruise. The itinerary visits five states and begins or ends in either Portland, Oregon, or Jackson, Wyoming, depending on whether you do the land or cruise portion first.

Germany is known for its scenic river valleys, and a new itinerary from French river cruise line CroisiEurope doesn't skimp on beautiful vistas. Called A Cruise Through Four Exquisite European Valleys , the seven-night, round-trip sailing departs from Strasbourg, France, and visits the Rhine, Neckar, Moselle and Saar river valleys.

The ship for this itinerary, 81-passenger Elbe Princesse II, is one of CroisiEurope's three paddle river boats. It normally navigates the Elbe River between Berlin and Prague. However, from July to October 2025, the ship will be cruising the Rhine and its tributaries.

This river cruise kicks off on the Saar River, famous for the Great Bend at Mettlach (the river equivalent of a hairpin turn), and overnights in the town of Saarburg, Germany. After a morning scenic cruise onto the Moselle River, you'll visit Trier, Germany, known for its ancient Roman structures and its photogenic medieval buildings, before continuing on to Cochem, Germany, where you can enjoy an afternoon visit to the hilltop Reichsburg Castle.

Larger cities like Koblenz, Germany, located at the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle rivers and home to Ehrenbreitstein Fortress, are also on the itinerary. You'll embark Riverside Debussy in Hungary's capital before cruising past the illuminated Hungarian Parliament Building on your way to Bratislava. The capital of Slovakia is home to a hilltop castle, a walkable pedestrian zone and pubs serving local beer.

The next day, discover the history and artistry of Vienna with visits to its Hapsburg-era palaces, 16th-century St. Stephen's Cathedral and numerous museums. Charming Durnstein, Austria, is known for its medieval castle and a riverfront abbey with a pretty blue-and-white spire, while the golden-hued abbey in nearby Melk, Austria, celebrates the flavor of apricots in preserves and liquors.

Christmas markets have been an annual tradition in Europe for centuries, with the markets open during the four weeks of Advent from about Nov. 24 through Dec. 24. Most Christmas river cruises sail throughout Germany, Austria, Hungary, France and Switzerland. And trust me, the grand cities of Vienna, Budapest, Salzburg, and Paris take on a completely different look and feel during the season, and are not nearly as crowded as in the summer.

Onboard guests walk off the ship into the decorated town centers where the Christmas Markets are lit up with old and new decor and bustling with local families gathering for hearty seasonal meals (be sure to sample some hot mulled wine, authentic gingerbread, and thick hot chocolate) before shopping among the local merchants. Visiting Europe during the Christmas season is truly unforgettable. I loved walking about and exploring the decorated cobblestone streets and storybook villages, especially at dusk when it seemed the entire port town was glowing with candlelight, and then returning to the ship where every evening was a special holiday performance or event.

I recommend packing a waterproof coat, gloves, hat/headband, scarf, and comfy walking shoes or boots. The ships are so lovely and warm inside, but when walking throughout the village or spending time on the ships’ outside observation deck or on your private verandah – especially when sailing – you will be happy to be nice and toasty.
