Day 1: Ha Long International Harbor – Bai Tu Long Bay – Thien Canh Son Cave (L, D)

08:20 – 08:45: Pick up at your hotel in Hanoi Old Quarter 

11:30: Arrive at Indochina Junk Office, take a rest at the Waiting Lounge before transferring to Cruise.

11:50 – 12:15: Go to the port by a buggy, where the crew and staff will welcome you and assist with the check-in process onto the cruise ship.

12:30 – 13:00: After boarding the cruise ship, you will enjoy tea and listen to an introduction about the itinerary and safety information for the journey, as well as check-in to your cabin.

13:15: Have lunch at the onboard restaurant, featuring seafood dishes from Quang Ninh. The cruise ship will start its journey to explore Bai Tu Long Bay, passing through limestone islands and beautiful scenery along the bay.

14:30: The tour guide will take you to visit Thien Canh Son Cave, where you can explore the natural beauty of the cave with unique stalactites formed over thousands of years.

15:00: Relax on Hon Co Beach and join a kayaking excursion to discover the limestone islands in the bay before returning to the cruise ship.

16:15: Back to the cruise ship and enjoy a sunset cruise on Bai Tu Long Bay.

17:15: Join a Vietnamese cooking class.

19:00: Rest and have dinner in a quiet and romantic atmosphere on the bay.

20:00: Free time to relax and you can also join the experience of squid fishing. Spend the night on Bai Tu Long Bay

Day 2: Vung Vieng Fishing Village – Ha Long International Harbor (B, L)

07:00 – 07:15: Morning view of the Bay’s landscape with a cup of tea or coffee. Breakfast is served on the cruise ship.

07:45: Transfer by bamboo boat to visit Vung Vieng fishing village, where you can explore the unique way of life and the beautiful scenery of the fishing village amidst the natural heritage.

08:45: Back to the cruise ship for relaxation and leisure time.

09:45 – 10:00: Check-out and enjoy some leisure time to relax and capture memorable moments as the cruise ship journeys through the stunning limestone island area.

10:15: Enjoy a  Set Menu Lunch  while the cruise ship continues its journey on the bay.

11:30: The cruise returns to the International Port of Ha Long. Drive to Yen Duc village in Dong Trieu province for a short break in this typical Vietnamese agricultural village which is rich in culture and traditions.

13:00 – 13:45 : Enjoy a water puppet show performed by local artists.

16:00 : Arrive in Hanoi. Trip ends.

On the return, you will have a short break at Yen Duc Village – a typical Vietnamese agricultural village which is rich in culture and traditions. This is a great chance to visit the charming fields while wandering narrow alleyways in the odorous fresh air and enjoying the  WATER PUPPET SHOW  there.

Exploring Thien Canh Son cave is an experience that you won’t want to rush. Take your time to admire the intricate details of the rock formations and soak in the tranquil ambiance of the cave. A visit to the cave typically lasts between 30 to 45 minutes, giving you plenty of time to fully appreciate its beauty. When you arrive at Thien Canh Son cave, you will be greeted with an awe-inspiring view of Bai Tu Long Bay. With sandy beaches, crystal-clear green water, and elegant sailing boats dotting the scenery, this panoramic view is truly a sight to behold.

Hon Co island 

Hon Co Island, located in the tranquil Cong Do area of Bai Tu Long Bay. While still relatively unknown to tourists, Hon Co Island remains a hidden gem within the breathtaking Bai Tu Long Bay. Its pristine white sandy beaches and mesmerizing emerald green waters create an idyllic setting for those seeking solace away from the bustling crowds. Visitors can relax on the sandy beach on this island. Moreover, Hon Co Island boasts the magnificent Thien Canh Son Cave, an absolute must-visit destination within Bai Tu Long Bay.

One of the highlights of visiting Vung Vieng Fishing Village is taking a bamboo boat ride through the village’s narrow waterways. Glide along the calm waters as your friendly local guide navigates the boat, providing insightful commentary along the way. This immersive experience allows you to truly appreciate the tranquility of the village and gain a deeper understanding of the local way of life.

1 NIGHT Circuit

Mysterious waters and myriads of islets and limestone formations create the spectacular seascapes of this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Halong, which means “descending dragon”, refers to legendary creatures sent down from the heavens to guard against invaders approaching from the sea. To protect the Vietnamese, the dragons belched out clusters of jewels to create an impenetrable barrier, which has since turned into over 2,000 beautiful limestone islets today dotting the bay.

This classic two-day/one-night cruise named “ The Dragon Passage ” along the “ancient playground of dragons” offers memorable sights and sounds captured in an unforgettable journey through thousands of limestone formations.

• Rates & Departures

Embark on an enchanting Halong Bay journey as you acquaint yourself with the amenities on board our vessel. Witness the breath-taking scenery from the sun deck during our initial hours of cruising. Our first destination is Cua Van, a floating fishing villages in Halong Bay, which some fishermen still use as a base for their fishing and aquacultural activities. Glide through this serene area in a small bamboo boat rowed by locals, offering a glimpse into the village and understand how once whole families use to life on water here. For the more active ones, take a kayak and paddle around the floating hamlet for a very personal exploration (complimentary). Next, we transfer by tender to Tien Ong cave, providing evidence of human civilization dating back to 10,000 – 8,000 BC. This small cave provides some fascinating understandings of Halong Bay's geological history. Returning to the ship, we sail to the overnight mooring area, where the "blue hour" unveils Halong Bay's magical beauty. Relax on the sun deck with your favourite drink, absorbing the tranquil moment. Engage in a cooking class with our chef, practicing classic Vietnamese recipes to impress your loved ones at home later. As evening descends, a multi-course à la carte dinner is served. If you like, join in later for an on-board presentation about the bay's unique features and secrets. Alternatively, try your hand at squid fishing with our staff for a delightful and entertaining experience. Spend the rest of the evening embracing the magical landscapes in the heart of Halong Bay, where once upon a time, sparkling jewels cascaded from heavenly dragons. Meals: Lunch, Dinner

For early risers, tea, coffee and pastries are available in the dining room and a Tai Chi class is offered on the sun deck to awaken your mind and muscles. We set sail to the small “Ti Top Island”. Formerly named Cat Nang, the island received a name change after former president Ho Chi Minh and the second man to orbit the Earth, Russian astronaut ‘GhermanTitov’, toured Halong Bay together in 1962. Since the cosmonaut was so fascinated with this picturesque islet, Uncle Ho would rename the island to honour Mr. Titov and as a gesture of friendship between their two countries. Once arriving at Ti Top, you can go for a refreshing morning swim on a sandy beach or - if you prefer to be more active - climb 400 steps (20 min.) to the island’s top with stunning, panoramic views over the bay. Back on board, you can take a shower and freshen up. Enjoy the final moments of sailing as we head back to the harbour while breakfast is served. Relax on the sun deck or while savouring the last views of this iconic site. Meals: Breakfast

Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site in the years 1994 and 2000 , the popularity of the area has never waned. Large numbers of tourists visit Halong Bay every year, and there’s no better way of marveling at the seascape than an overnight cruise.

Weather can make or break your trip! Halong Bay shares the same weather as most of northern Vietnam, with four distinctive seasons: spring, summer, autumn, and winter.

The choice is yours, but it’s crucial to understand what to expect as a result of your travel date. For example, a trip in the winter will be colder and drier. As such, water activities like kayaking and snorkeling won’t be ideal, but that means you’ll have more of a chance to hike and visit floating village communities. Similar constraints and opportunities hold true for every season, so research year-round weather in Halong Bay to find what season would be best for you!

One final point to remember has to do with monsoons. Vietnam is a tropical country with a climate that’s prone to monsoons, and this will affect your trip if you’re not careful. The most common time for monsoons is during the winter, between October and April. In the worst cases, cruises can be canceled, so it’s important to be aware of this when planning your trip.

Really good package deal to see the highlights of Halong Bay. Our tour guide Jimmy was amazing, he really went above and beyond in his efforts to make us feel comfortable and he had a great spirit and attitude to life, he was a real pleasure. Even for me and my friend who are vegetarians, the food was great, and everything was arranged perfectly for us. We had a very straightforward pick-up from the hotel in the morning and we arrived to spacious cabins on the boat. Mattresses were maybe a bit firm but overall it was not too bad. Activities included hiking through a cave, kayaking Halong Bay, cruising Halong Bay, beach time and an informative cooking class, all in the two days that we were there! Let's face it!  There are SO MANY Halong cruises to choose from that it can get totally overwhelming.

To help you, I'm going to outline all the criteria that I was looking for when I chose my first Halong Bay Cruise and then I will share some recommended Halong Bay tours with you.

1. How Long Should the Cruise be?

Halong Bay Day Trip: If you are short on time, you might only be able to enjoy a day cruise on Halong Bay.

Be prepared for a hectic day if you are planning to travel from Hanoi (around 3.5 hour journey one-way).

Halong Bay Overnight Cruises: You can choose from either a 1 night or 2 night cruise.

The Halong Bay 2 night cruise option is the most popular as it allows you time to enjoy some activities, travel deeper into the quieter areas of the bay, as well as enjoy some down-time.

2. Traditional Halong Bay Junk Boat or Newer Boat?

Next question is whether you prefer to enjoy the older traditional junk boats or if you love newer and more lux boats.

The Junk Boats are gorgeous, but you need to be prepared for older style boats and smaller rooms.  

Our favorite Halong Bay Junk Boat Overnight Cruise is the Indochina Sails Cruise .

If you prefer newer boats with more luxurious spacious rooms that offer terraces and balconies, you might prefer researching a company such as Signature Royal Cruises .

3. Size of Boat and Number of Rooms on Board

Your next consideration is to look at the number of rooms on board. 

If you are young and love to party, you will most likely enjoy the larger boats with more people.  

But for most of us after relaxation, it would be wise to book a room on a smaller boat.

Our second best selling cruise, the  Aphrodite Cruise  is a nice sized boat with only 17 cabins.

For a much more intimate cruise experience, L Azalee has a 4 person boat available.

4. Included Activities

Look out for 'cheaper' boats that might come across as a bargain, but then charge an arm-and-leg for any activities.  

We prefer cruises that offer free water activities such as kayaking. 

5. Itineraries

Most itineraries of the cruise companies are pretty much the same.  

You will typically visit a Pearl Farm, a Fishing Village, a Cave, as well as get the opportunity to climb to the top of TiTov Island and enjoy a bit of swim (typical 2-night itinerary).  

The difference in the itinerary is when a cruise company makes the effort to avoid the crowds from the other companies.

Indochina Sails might be an older style boat and rooms might be small, but we always arrived at our sights before and after the crowds.  

We were the only group exploring the Cave, we were the only ones in sight kayaking and we enjoyed TiTov island with only a small group of other travellers.

I really appreciated the fact that they went out of their way to give us a more relaxed and peaceful experience.

6. Destinations Included

Everyone knows about Halong Bay, and it is no surprise that over the years this beautiful heritage site has become pretty polluted and littered with trash.

Many travellers leave disappointed after experiencing dirty water and masses of crowds.

Look for a cruise that ventures into both Halong Bay as well as Bai Tu Long Bay.  

There are only a few cruise companies that head towards Bai Tu Long Bay, which means that this part of the Heritage Site is still pristine and much less crowded.

I know that both  Indochina Sails  as well as Bhaya Cruises  include both Bays in their itineraries, but you better book way ahead of time as they sell out very quickly!

We did enjoy kayaking and swimming in the clear water of Bai Tu Long Bay (only some cruise boats go here so the water is less polluted – check the reviews above to find a cruise company that ventures into this area).

We also swam in the beach off one of the islands in the bay. The water was definitely murkier there, but it might be due to the rainy weather we had.

Thank you so much for sharing Halong Bay. Halong is a must when traveller visit Hanoi. Overnight cruises are good but if you do not have much time so the day trip will be fine. Besides that Ninh Binh will be a good place to visit, being a local i really recommend it.

Yes, I think 2 nights is the perfect length! Ninh Binh is gorgeous too, but also quickly becoming touristy.

Now more and more people visit Lan Ha Bay as it is less touristic. Escape Sails Lan Ha Bay Luxury will be good as they use the expressway and Limousine bus/van so travellers have more time on the cruise and less time on bus.

We are planning on taking a cruise next February and were thinking of choosing a cruise boat that goes to Bai Tu Long Bay as we have read that it is just as beautiful and interesting as Halong Bay and is less crowded. When I wrote to the cruise company they said that the Bai Tu Long Bay route is now considered to be the more crowded route and they are now directing customers to their Halong Bay route. 1. Halong, Lan Ha and Bai Tu Long Bay have the same landscape of majestic limestone islands. Lan Ha and Bai Tu Long have more tranquil scenery with poetic beauty. However, if you want to find the best area for photography, you can consider Halong Bay area. There are jaw-dropping attractions with breathtaking views such as Surprise Cave, Titov Islands, Thien Cung Cave, Luon Cave, etc. 2. You can consider Phoenix Day Cruise with 5.5 hour duration and the itinerary to the 3 most signature landmarks Surprise Cave, Luon Cave, and Titov Island. Otherwise, the same itinerary can be found on Ambassador Day Cruise and La Casta Daily Cruise for an 8-hour duration. 3. The 2d/1n cruises usually finish at 11:00 - 12:00 on the 2nd day. It takes you 2.5 hours from the port directly to the airport or 3.5 hours if you return to Hanoi center and take a taxi after that. Therefore, you will have enough time for your flight at 6 pm. Therefore, it will be best if you can leave the port in 5-10 minutes. Otherwise, you can consider some cruises departing a bit later from 12:15 - 12:30 such as Ambassador Cruise, Essence Grand, Doris Cruise, Erina Cruise.

For 4 day/3 night tours, you can refer to Heritage Binh Chuan Cruise, Stellar of the Seas, Elite of the Seas, or Capella Cruise. 2. The time depends on each cruise's schedule. However, overnight cruises usually depart at 12:00 - 13:00 pm and return at 10:30 - 11:30 am. 3. Some cruises have their own jetty while some don't. As a result, you can walk to the cruise if they have and you will be transferred by a small tender to reach the cruise. 4. We do provide private transfers from Hanoi and back to Hanoi Airport. The rate is around US$250/16-seat van for a group of 7 for 2 day/1 night trip ( The rate may change upon specific schedule and cruise port). 5. For a private transfer, the pick-up time from Hanoi is around 8:30 - 9:00 am. We are looking for a 3 days 2 nights cruise in Bai Tu Long Bay or Halong Bay. Departure Date: 3 May 2024, until 5 May 2024. Preferably with a nice room or suite, with extra bed for our 10 yo daughter. So 2 adults and 1 child. We already checked out the high end cruises like Stellar of the Seas and Elite of the Seas. We like the luxury on those boats, but it seems they are too big and not feel very authentic. We also checked out Indochine and Orchid Cruises, but it seems they are all going to the very busy parts of Halong Bay. And also, it seems that after day 1, the boat is going back to pick up new guests. And the boat is always staying in the same area for the night. So we are looking for less big boats, more authentic, but also preferably travelling to more quiet areas of Halong Or Bai tu Long bay. And it would be great if we can travel for 3 full days with the same group, and sleep in different areas instead of the same area with many different boats. There are many cruises options that work for your family and May is a deal-season too.  I am sorry that due to local regulations, there are only fixed area that the cruises can dock overnight so there are no cruises that can sleep in two different areas in the same trip. If you prefer a less crowded area, you can consider Bai Tu Long Bay such as Dragon Legend Cruise, which has its own unique 3 day 2 night route and does not return to pier to collect more guests.

A more well-rounded option, in my opinion, is Heritage Cruise Binh Chuan. With 20 cabins and a very different approach to cruising, which focus more indepth experience and story telling, I believe your family will have a memorable time in Halong and Lan Ha Bay Area. Milford Sound is such a devastatingly beautiful place, and there is something magical about spending a quiet night on the deck of your ship, taking it all in. The cabins were cozy and surprisingly comfortable, and the whole ship leans hard into nautical explorer vibes (it's very fun and very instagrammable, if that's your thing). You get a chance to jump into the fiord too, and you better do it! If you can swim, don't miss the opportunity, it's not even that cold (and the showers are hot- you'll be fine). The food on board was better than expected, there's a bar, and you'll learn a lot of fun facts from your onboard nature guide. This overnight cruise through the heart of Fiordland provides astonishing views and the ultimate Milford Sound adventure.

You’ll start by departing from the Milford Sound wharf in the late afternoon before cruising through Milford Sound accompanied by our specialist nature guide. They’ll explain the history and geology of the area and be on hand to answer your questions.

This cruise style is relaxed, allowing plenty of time to view the fiord’s spectacular waterfalls, rainforest, mountains and wildlife – you’re bound to encounter seals and, if you’re lucky, maybe dolphins and penguins too.

The Milford Mariner then anchors in a sheltered cove. From here you can join the guide and explore in the vessel’s tender craft (small boat) or kayaks. If you prefer, you can simply relax on deck and soak in the beauty of this amazing place. If you’re feeling brave there’s always the option of a refreshing swim too. All activities are weather dependent. 

As evening falls, you’ll enjoy a delicious carvery buffet in the dining saloon – a feast prepared freshly by our on-site chef. Then it’s time to relax in the company of your fellow traveller, indulge in some star-gazing and story-sharing or simply retire to your private cabin.

Getting there

The journey to Milford Sound is just as spectacular as the destination itself. Milford Sound is around 5-6 hours (one-way) from Queenstown and around 3 hours from Te Anau by road. 

Overnight parking is available in the Realnz coach area outside of the Milford Terminal for $30, from 3.30pm until 11am the following morning. This can be paid by card or paywave inside the terminal building.

Free parking is available at Deep Water Basin Road. Guests have the ability to drop luggage and other passengers off, head to Deep Water Basin Road and park there (free of charge), walking down to the terminal after doing so and joining their overnight cruise. This walk takes approximately 20 minutes and is marked.

Guests should always allow extra time for themselves to check in and board their vessels.

By far the most satisfying way to experience Milford (or Doubtful) Sound is to do an overnight cruise; it gives you more time in the fjord when it's at its best—first thing in the morning and early evening. Fodors.com

How long does it take to travel to Milford Sound?

If you are travelling from Queenstown it will take around 5 hours to reach Milford. Te Anau to Milford is around 2 hours 30 minutes. This timing allows for toilet and photo stops along the way.  If driving, make sure you fill your vehicle with petrol in Te Anau before travelling to Milford as there are no petrol stations at Milford Sound or en route.  For more details, refer to our Driving Times webpage.

At Milford where do you park and go to check in for Overnight Cruises?

Yes, bedding and towels are provided to all guests.  

Overnight Cruises and Quadshare - We are a group of three people and would like to book a shared quad-share room. Will this mean we would be sharing with another person?

Yes, you could potentially be sharing with another guest. Alternatively you could choose to pay for the entire quad cabin, or two double cabins, to ensure privacy.  If you wish to pay for an entire quad cabin, please contact us directly.

Note: quad-share cabins are mixed gender.

What weather can I expect in Fiordland?

Fiordland’s weather is what gives the region its unique character. Rainfall is what makes Fiordland a land of lakes, rivers, streams, waterfalls and fiords. Visitors should always be prepared to enjoy some rainfall during their stay. It is recommended to bring sensible clothing for cool and wet weather to fully appreciate your stay.

The temperatures you can expect in the different seasons are as follows:

Is it worth going to Milford/Doubtful Sounds on a wet day?

Many say you have not seen Fiordland unless you have seen it in the rain.  When it rains in Fiordland the landscape is dramatic - rock faces stream with waterfalls, mist hangs around the tops of the mountains and rivers and streams rage.  From a dry comfortable vantage point on the bus or boat, this landscape is spectacular for sightseeing.

While we cannot guarantee you will see wildlife, sightings of fur seals are reasonably common in both Doubtful and Milford Sounds.  A pod of bottlenose dolphins resides in Doubtful Sound so you have a good chance of seeing these fascinating mammals, and in Milford Sound dolphins are occasional visitors.  In both sounds the rare Fiordland crested penguin can at times be observed.

How much luggage can I take on my overnight cruise?

We recommend each passenger brings no more than a carry-on sized bag due to space restrictions in the cabins. For a list of what to bring please see the 'more info' section or your booking confirmation.

There is limited luggage storage available at the Milford Sound Visitor Terminal.

What is the difference between a double room and a twin room?

A double room is a private room for two people, with one bed to share. A twin room is a private room for two people, with two single beds.

Your travel agent or the outlet where you purchased your Milford Sound trip will refund the flight component of your ticket.  You will return to Queenstown by  coach.

What is the difference between Milford and Doubtful Sounds?

The main difference between Milford Sound and Doubtful Sound is their locations in Fiordland. Milford Sound, in the northern region, is captivating with its dramatic beauty. Doubtful Sound, on the other hand, is further south, in the heart of Fiordland, and is vaster and wilder, approximately ten times larger than Milford Sound.

What are the driving conditions to Milford like in the winter?

Driving conditions during winter (May to September) can be difficult.  Extreme care is needed as freezing temperatures mean the road can ice over in shaded places.  During the winter it is  mandatory  to carry snow chains in your vehicle as the road can sometimes be covered in snow.  These are available for hire from petrol stations in Te Anau and Queenstown.

If you are not confident about driving in winter conditions then take a RealNZ  coach  to Milford Sound so you can relax and take in the stunning scenery.

Are there any natural hazards and risks I should be aware of when visiting Milford Sound?

Visitors to Milford Sound should be aware of various natural hazards, including earthquakes, tsunamis, severe weather events, flooding, landslides, and avalanches. The Alpine Fault, capable of producing Magnitude 8 earthquakes, poses a significant risk of triggering landslides and tsunamis, while the area's mountainous terrain and high rainfall lead to frequent landslides and potential road closures due to flooding and avalanches. Throughout Fiordland the fiords are officially mapped as sounds.  Strictly speaking, they should be called fiords.

A fiord is a glaciated valley - typically narrow and steep-sided - that has been flooded by the sea after the glacier’s retreat.  A sound, on the other hand, is a river valley flooded by the sea following a rise in sea levels or depression of the land, or a combination of both.

Viral video captured the moment chairs and fists went flying during a wild brawl aboard a Carnival cruise ship, as security officers tried in vain to douse the melee.

The high-seas scuffle erupted aboard the Carnival Paradise on the last night of a five-day cruise to Central America in early June — adding turbulence to an otherwise idyllic voyage, said passenger Nick Richardson, who shot the footage after coming up on the scene.

“This is just what happens at 3 in the morning when you got a bunch of drunk girls from Tampa,” said Richardson, 43, who was on the cruise with his fiancee and three children.

“I’m like, ‘It’s definitely gonna go down.’ It’s why I got it on video,” he said. “Those girls were already set on what they were gonna do. It just got out of hand very, very quickly. And that’s how it happens. You’re just drinking too much.”

The six-and-a-half minute video that Richardson posted on YouTube and on TikTok , starts with a group of women jawing at each other inside one of the ship’s dining rooms — and quickly escalates.

One woman grabs a chair and tosses it at the other group and fists start flying — with a group of combatants hitting the ground while still slinging punches, the video shows.

“In my opinion, just a bunch of people on their last night, probably drank too much,” Richardson told The Post. “Obviously some kind of misunderstanding. They didn’t give a s–t who was watching.

“They didn’t care,” he added. “They just kept going.”

Richardson said he only walked into the dining room because he wanted to grab a slice of pizza for a late-night snack — not realizing he’d walk into a floating war zone.

He is heard saying throughout his video that he just wanted a slice of pizza — and even tries to calm down the battling women by offering, “Let’s all get some pizza.”

A spokesperson for the cruise line confirmed the incident and said in an email that the ship’s “security team intervened in an incident that took place on June 6.

“As is our policy, we will not tolerate such behavior and the guests involved were fined and will not sail on Carnival Cruise Line again,” the email said.

Richardson, meanwhile, said the fisticuffs didn’t mar the trip for him and his family one bit — and raved about the voyage to Honduras and Cozumel and the Carnival crew he called “amazing.”

“The entirety of the cruise everybody was friendly with each other, everybody was enjoying themselves,” he said Wednesday. “The Carnival made sure everyone was having a fantastic time.

“I don’t knock this fight as a reason why I wouldn’t go back on Carnival,” Richardson added. “I already booked another one for this spring with my family.”

This year, small ships seem to be hitting the mark. These vessels, which Travel + Leisure defines as those with 150 to 299 cabins, offer what many readers consider the perfect blend of choice and comfort, with plenty of onboard dining and activities without the at-times overwhelming selection found on much larger ships. In fact, small ships may be driving a surge of interest in cruising generally, as new and newly refreshed options in this range are drawing both longtime cruisers and those eager to try a new way of traveling.

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Nearly 165,000 T+L readers completed the 2023 survey, an increase of nearly 25 percent over pre-pandemic voting levels. A total of more than 685,000 votes were cast across over 8,500 unique properties (hotels, cities, cruise lines, etc.).

For the cruise category, respondents were asked to rate individual ships; the results were combined to generate scores for cruise lines in different categories based on number of cabins. The small-ship ocean cruise line category is only for ships with 150 to 299 cabins. Some cruise lines may appear in multiple categories depending on the makeup of their fleet.

Ships were specifically rated on the criteria below:

• Excursions/activities

For each characteristic, respondents could choose a rating of excellent, above average, average, below average, or poor. The final scores are averages of these responses.

What Readers Loved 

In the 2023 voting, readers gave high marks to established brands that have reinvigorated their offerings. Consider No. 2 Windstar Cruises, which recently rebuilt three of its small ships at an investment of $250 million, adding more suites, improved culinary options, and enhanced spa facilities to each. “I'm never going to be able to get on another cruise line,” said one convert, who traveled on Star Legend .

Meanwhile Paul Gauguin Cruises (No. 3) may have slipped a bit from its 2022 ranking but still posted a score of more than 92 points. That’s thanks to its luxurious service — most rooms come with butler service — and, no doubt, its dreamy itineraries that visit remote atolls in South Pacific and the cruise line’s private beach on Bora Bora. “It's the only way to see this part of the world,” one voter shared.

This year’s small-ship leader, though, made its mark with two new vessels that are unlike anything else sailing today. Read on to see how Viking captured this category — and for more details on all the top lines.

Typically thought of as a midsize-ship line, Viking took top honors in this category, too, thanks to its twin ships Viking Polaris and Viking Octantis . The expedition vessels, both of which have 189 cabins, are built for out-there adventures, whether on the waters of the Great Lakes or in the Southern Ocean on the way to Antarctica. “I can't say enough about how wonderful our experience was on the Viking Octantis to Antarctica. The ship is stunning in every way,” one voter said. “The excursions were all well-planned and executed — and the science and educational sessions were excellent,” another added. While shorter trips aboard these ships are possible, Viking can also arrange for a “ longitudinal world cruise .” These multi-month journeys will take intrepid guests from Minnesota to Ushuaia, Argentina — or the other way around — in small-ship comfort, with port excursions and insightful lectures along the way.
