Without any further ado, let me walk you through what GuruWalk is all about. With this honest and unbiased review, you can decide whether it's worth your time and money.

What Is GuruWalk?

GuruWalk  is an online platform that connects travelers with local guides who offer free walking tours in cities across the globe. With an interactive user interface, GuruWalks helps you book walking tours with ease.

There's no hassle of booking weeks in advance or sticking to any stiff commitments if your plans change!

These tours are designed to give travelers an immersive experience of the local culture and history. But, why is it better than other walking tours? Well, it's being led by passionate locals who can show you just how to have fun the local way!

Is It Free?

Yes, GuruWalk is technically free. However, it's not uncommon for travelers to pay as they please at the end of the tour to show their appreciation for the wonderful guides. Basically, GuruWalk can be considered a pay-as-you-please service!

How Does It Work?

Using GuruWalk is super easy! Just create an account through their website or mobile app and browse the different tours available. Choose a tour that suits you for your preferred location and book without a hassle!

The tour usually lasts between 2 to 3 hours and is usually on foot. If you're a couch potato like me and dread the thought of walking, I have good news! You can opt for a bike tour and pedal your way through the sights.

Where Is GuruWalk Operational?

GuruWalk offers tours in over  100 cities  across Europe, Asia, Africa, North and South America, and Australia. Some of the most popular cities where GuruWalk operates include:

Pricing Plan

Let's face it, traveling is expensive, which is why GuruWalk is such a game-changer. Their tours are as free as a sample at Costco, so you can save some bucks for a fancy dinner or a pair of those hilarious touristy socks. However, it's customary to tip your guide at the end of the tour as a way of thanking them for their time and expertise.

How much you tip is totally up to you, so you can pay whatever you think is justifiable!

How to Book a Tour?

  • Create an account  - Like any app, you'll create a simple account through their  website  or mobile app to find an ideal tour for you.
  • Browse tours  - Scroll through the variety of tours available. You can filter your search by location, date, and tour type.
  • Choose a tour  - When you fall in love with a tour that meets all your requirements, click on it to read up on all the details. Be sure to check out the tour's duration, distance of the meeting point from your hotel, and the guide's profile.
  • Book the tour  -Once you book your tour, you'll receive a confirmation email with all the necessary details, including the meeting point and time. Make sure you don't stand your guide up!
  • Attend the tour  - Put on your walking shoes and get ready to meet your guru! You'll find them waiting for you at the designated meeting point.
  • Leave a review  - Congrats, you've completed your journey! Before you move on to your next adventure, make sure to leave a review of your guide and the tour on the GuruWalk platform. It's your chance to share your thoughts, spread the love, and help fellow travelers find their perfect tour.

Here are some of the most prominent features of the platform:

Pay-As-You-Please Tours

All of GuruWalk's tours are pay-as-you-please for travelers. Local guides offer their services for free, and travelers can choose how much they want to tip their guide, meaning you won't have to spend too much to tour!

Wide Network

GuruWalk has a large network of local guides who offer tours in cities all over the world. Chances are you can point anywhere on the map blindfolded and find a Guruwalk tour waiting for you wherever your finger lands. Tour almost anywhere in the world without fretting over expenses!

Customized Tours

GuruWalk gurus are all locals who have a knack for exploring and helping people see a city in a non-traditional way. All tour guides, therefore, have something unique to offer, and walkers can tour with the guide whose personality and tour itinerary sound the most exciting to them.

Tours can also be customized on the spot to suit the interests of travelers. Want to focus on street art? Done. Need to find the best food spots? Why not! Our gurus won't judge you if you find the city's best gelato truck and decide to stop for a scoop
 or two... or four.

The flexibility GuruWalk provides is not something you'd get with traditional tours.

Ratings and Reviews

GuruWalk has a rating and review system for each tour and guide, which allows travelers to read about the experiences of others while making informed decisions when choosing a guide.

Whether you're looking for a guide who can show you the best sunset view in the city or just a travel companion with a great sense of humor, the reviews on GuruWalk will help you find the perfect match.

What Can Go Wrong With GuruWalk?

Like any other touring platform, GuruWalk has its downsides. Since GuruWalk enables locals to sign up as guides without any strict prerequisites, it can be challenging to predict the quality of your tour.

Not all guides are true experts who can give you the trip of a lifetime.

Because the tours are not standardized, your experience depends on your tour guide. Even if you book the same tour with a different guide, your ideal tour may also be disrupted if your desired tour guide isn't available.

One big problem I can think of is that since these tour guides are all local people, they may or may not have the expertise to deal with foreigners.

Although the guides are accredited and professionally verified according to the local law, they might not speak your language or understand your culture and requirements.

The tour guides also depend on tips as their income, which is usually higher than a fixed-fee tour. This may still be well below the country's average income. This discourages guides and may result in some leaving the platform.

Is GuruWalk Worth It?

All things considered, GuruWalk is still a great way to tour a city. It's affordable, flexible, and much more convenient than traditional tours. While the quality of the tours can vary depending on the guide, GuruWalk provides a unique and valuable opportunity to discover hidden gems and gain a deeper understanding of a destination.

If you're tired of walking around with a guidebook in hand, squinting at maps, and trying to decipher foreign street signs, let GuruWalk be your saviour!

Our Rating: 4.5/5

  • Local expertise
  • Flexible and customizable tours
  • Ratings and review system
  • Helpful customer support team
  • Unpredictable quality of the tour
  • Tours subject to the guide's preference
  • Language barriers

We just had a walking tour in

We just had a walking tour in Bucharest, booked through Guru walks. We accidentally showed up a day earlier and I am actually happy for it. Our tour guide Elena was brilliant! Her knowledge and sense of humour made the walk a great experience, especially it was a very heavy +30 summer day. Thoroughly recommend it for anyone who wants highlights of the city.

Date of experience : June 13, 2024

Reply from Guruwalk - Free tours

We're glad you had such a wonderful experience with Elena's tour! We hope to see you soon on another GuruWalk tour!

Had a pretty poor experience in Croatia

Had a pretty poor experience in Croatia where the guide allegedly did show up but 4 of us in a small group of what was to be just 8 people were left standing at the Split sign. We wrote in comments, had been told to arrive early so we did and we waited at the exact spot. In fact another guru guide giving a tour in Spanish told us we were at the exact correct spot. Having come in humidity an hours drive we sat hungry in the mid day sun for half an hour then left. Our review was removed on the site as it said it contained wrong information...the tour had actually happened and they were sorry for the "frustration", their policy is to review reviews and delete negative ones they feel happened ...but it didn't happen for 50 percent of people that day. The guide told us guru wall charges them 2 euro per person signed up and so ironically warned if we were no shows that she'd be charged. I'm not sure free walking tour apps should charge that as it pushes the tip up for us. In future I'll just find local yellow umbrella tours and similar in other cities. Guru walk seemed useful last year, my experience with their bizarre customer service has left us cold and uninterested.

Date of experience : May 20, 2024

Hello Shannon, We feel very sorry for your bad experience with us. As we told you, we can't penalise a guide who proved that the mentioned tour took place. However, we always want our users to have the best experience possible and it's clear we didn't achieve it with you. If you decide to give us another chance in the future, we will be very happy to receive you and bring you the best experience we can.

Dalen in Pula

We spent two hours learning about Pula in the company of the enthusiastic and knowledgeable Dalen, a native of the city. I would very highly recommend the walking tour with this charming young man!

Date of experience : June 03, 2024

Hello John! We're very glad you enjoyed the tour with Dalen! We hope you enjoy the rest of your trip too, and hopefully see you in the near future on another fantastic GuruWalk tour. Best regards - GuruWalk Experience Team.

The guide demanded money

We are now in Jakarta and we are supposed to go for our GuruWalk tour today. However, before the tour started, the guide demanded that we pay the minimum 10 euros oer pwrson. This was before the tour started and he basically said to cancel the tour if we cant pay. Worse is that Guruwalk do not even have a feedback for its guide. So here is the only place I can review.

Date of experience : May 03, 2024

Hello Raf, I'm truly sorry to hear about the situation you encountered with the guide in Jakarta. It's important to us that all our GuruWalk experiences meet the expectations of our walkers, and what you've described is certainly not the standard we aim for. I will personally reach out to the guide to get more information about this incident and ensure appropriate actions are taken. Our tours are indeed based on a pay-what-you-feel-it's-worth model, and payments should not be demanded upfront. Could I kindly ask you to contact us on [email protected] with more information about your experience? Additionally, you're more than welcome to leave a review about the tour and the guide on our website. You can do this from your bookings section on your account. We value your feedback as it helps us improve our services and the experiences of all walkers. If there's anything else we can help you with, please don't hesitate to reach out on [email protected]

Memorable History of Prague 101

I had a great experience in Prague with Guruwalk tours. Our guide was Jan, he was very informed in the history of Prague and eloquent. He made us feel comfortable and engaged relatively with all his audience. Our tour covered, The Astronomical clock, Jewish quarters and Charles bridge among others. I would recommend Prague Guruwalk tours anytime. This is a must do in Prague!

Date of experience : March 31, 2024

Thank you for your kind words! We're so happy to hear you enjoyed the Tour in Prague, and I hope we'll see you again for another tour very soon. Thank you for choosing GuruWalk!

This platform is dodgy

This platform is dodgy. I booked a tour in Helsinki but no one appeared. I messaged the tour company and they said it was not happening and that I shouldn't have been able to book in the first place and to blame Guruwalk. They did suggest an alternative tour the same day but it didn't suit me. I left a review on the tour compan's page and it has since been deleted. There is no honesty or transparency at Guruwalk. Do not book any tours via Guruwalk.

Date of experience : April 21, 2024

I'm truly sorry to hear about the experience you had with your booking in Helsinki. It's disappointing to learn that the tour did not take place as scheduled and that there was confusion regarding the booking process. We strive to ensure that all tours listed on GuruWalk are accurately represented and that any changes or cancellations are communicated promptly to our walkers. Unfortunately, the information the local tour provider (the guide) gave you is correct. There was a technical issue with our platform that caused their tour to be open to booking when it shouldn't have. We have now solved this bug, but we deeply apologise for the inconvenience caused. Accordingly, since this wasn't the guide's fault, we decided to hide your review as to not affect their ranking on the platform.  Please rest assured that we take your feedback seriously, and have taken the necessary steps to prevent such incidents in the future. If there's anything else I can assist you with, or if you have further details to share about your experience, please don't hesitate to reach out to us on [email protected] Thank you for bringing this to our attention, and once again, I apologise for the inconvenience caused. Best regards, GuruWalk Support Team

Terrible experience

Terrible experience. We booked a tour for 3 people in Girona. When at the meeting point, nobody showed up, just other tourists like us waiting for a tour guide. Ten minutes past the starting hour, one of us checked his email and discovered the tour had been cancelled due to underbooking. Less than three hours before it had to start! While we had received a mail in the morning reminding us to be there on time! We travelled all the way from Barcelona to get there, and got nothing. Oh, but in the mail it said we were offered an alternative for 30€/person! Untrustworthy, shameless and absolutely careless about customers. Will never book a Guru tour again and definitely spread word about their unprofessionalism.

Guide in Varansi

We used Anant as our guide in Varansi. He always kept us in the loop when it came to updates and advice and any general advice. He was very knowledgeable about Varansi and knew lots of secret places to visit. He definitely made our trip worthwhile and intact changed the tour for us as we wanted to visit something specific (there was only two us so that worked!) I would 100% recommend him for Varansi. His English was exceptional and so made for very interesting chats along the way !

I was skeptical at first since I assumed a free your would be a tourist trap, but was I wrong. I had an amazing experience doing the Prague free walking tour of old town and my guide, Scott, was both very informative and entertaining. It was a great experience and would highly recommend for anyone coming to a new city. In addition, the guides are knowledgeable of the cities and gave me great recommendations.

Prague Walling Tour

On Monday December 4th my wife and I took the walking tour of Prague with David as our guide. David did a wonderful job. He was informative, funny, and considerate of all in the group despite some challenging conditions. It was one of the coldest days in Prague with snow and ice covering much of the ground. He moved at a pace that was safe for all and finished the presentation in the allotted time. He spoke on a loud clear voice that all could hear and answered all questions in a friendly and professional manner. If you’re thinking about taking this tour, I would highly recommend it and David as your guide.

Enthusiastic guide, Susan

Guide was enthusiastic and tour lasted 2 full hours. She was knowledgeable about the building of Bath right from the Romans to the present day. Our one difficulty was finding the starting point. It might help if the Walking Guru wore something distinctive and also explained that it's a different business there now (John Anthony's) than on Google Maps (Western Union). In fact changing the starting point to somewhere else might be a good idea. Anyway, I would heartily recommend this walking tour!

Date of experience : August 04, 2023

Hi Karima! So nice to know you enjoyed the tour in Bath. We're sending your comments to Susan, the guide, to help her improve the tour and meeting point for future travellers. Thank you very much for your comments!

Amsterdam Tour in 2020 - from Argentina

I took the tour back in 2020 and it was great! The guide was really cool, he put his best to make the tour interesting and fun. Illegal but tolerated was the quote! Hice el tour en 2020 y fue increĂble. El guĂa fue genial, dio lo mejor de Ă©l para hacer la experiencia muy interesante y divertida. Es ilegal pero se tolera fue la frase saliente!

Our favorite experience in Medellin

I can't say enough good things about this tour. Juan was amazing giving us not just history of Comuna 13 but involving us in the stories in a very engaging way. He also shared a lot of personal experiences growing up there. It's a sad difficult history but one people should know, and learning about how the artists totally transformed it into a safe haven of arts for tourism is incredible. We're so glad we didn't go on our own...we never would have known half of what we saw. We wouldn't have known about the SUPERB view from a gallery rooftop with a huge medellin sign that's great for photos. Do this tour! And be sure to tip your guides well. The organization also supports several programs to benefit children in Comuna 13.

Walking tour in October

Me and my mother in low would highly recommend to book tours with Guruwalk. Amazing knowledgeable people (especially Czarek), who was our guide on a Sunday the 15.10.23. He knows the history, was looking after our safety, the piece was absolutely perfect for elderly person! His English was very good too. Great trip around main interesting places in Gdansk. Thank you! Kasia Kudelska and Helene Henderson from Scotland!

Date of experience : October 15, 2023

We're glad to know you enjoyed the tour!

Avoid. Apparently if the guide hasn’t got enough takers they simply don’t turn up, ignoring your WhatsApp messages, so that you hang about at a meeting point in Marrakech for an hour being bothered by all and sundry ! They reply 3 months later asking for a reference number, otherwise Trustpilot will delete the review, suddenly Trustpilot start to look shady too !

Date of experience : January 14, 2023

We are sorry to hear about your negative experience. This is not acceptable behavior from any of our guides. We take all reports of unprofessional conduct very seriously and will investigate this matter further. We always strive to provide our customers with the best possible experience, and we apologize for any inconvenience caused. Please contact us with the details of your booking, so we can investigate and take appropriate action. Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

A platform for tormenting tour guides and dubious claim of free tours

This is a platform for tormenting tour guides and also offer dubious claims of free tours. This platform offers free tours to tourists however the platform charge a fee from the guides. So nothing is FREE over here. Since many tourists are trapped with a lure of free tours, hence they later vent out their frustrations to the poor guide, if the guide asks for a hard-earned tipping at the end. On top of that there is NO organisational structure at all in this company. No-one is answerable for any of their actions. It is a mere marketing agency / middlemen thriving on google and the agency exploits a tour guides hard work. I suggest tour guides to pay to google directly for the promotion of their services, No need to involve any middlemen who just earn out a guides hardwork

Unreliable and unprofessional in Marrakesh

Booked a free walking tour in Marrakesh for 4 people on 4.2.23. Got a message at 10pm on 3.2.23 to remind us about it. Then at 2.30 am on 4.2.23 a message was sent by Mohammed cancelling the tour and no reason given, other than saying he hopes we will understand! Unreliable, unprofessional and disgraceful. Would never use GuruWalk again.

Date of experience : February 04, 2023

Hi Sheba, I'm very sorry to hear about your negative experience with the free walking tour you booked in Marrakesh. I understand that receiving a last-minute cancellation without a clear explanation is very disappointing and inconvenient. We take any issues related to our services very seriously and would like to investigate further to take appropriate action. Can you please provide us with more information about the tour you booked and the details of the cancellation? We want to fully understand what happened and do everything we can to make sure it doesn't happen again. Once again, I apologize for what has happened!

GuruWalk: the new Airbnb of “free walking tours”?

guru walk tours

Harry Potter London.

This Spanish startup is disrupting the tourism sector by allowing anyone to become a tour guide and to be paid only with tips.

Traveling like a local and having fun has never been easier. The Spanish startup GuruWalk is the first global community of tours only based on tips. The platform allows anybody to book an affordable tour wherever they go and anyone to become a guide in their own city, everywhere in the world. The booking is free of charge and the tours don’t have a fixed price. Travelers can give whatever they want at the end of the visit, according to their budget and the experience they had.

"We noticed that many people have deep knowledge of their cities or a passion to share, but they can’t afford launching their own website or marketing campaigns to connect with travelers. Moreover, in places like Cuba, there is an increasing demand for travel experiences that hasn’t been covered yet due to a lack of resources. These tours precisely benefit locals from these areas since they can take advantage of the tourism flow and obtain a new source of income ” said the founder of GuruWalk Juan Castillo .

GuruWalk is experiencing an average weekly growth of bookings of 20%, with currently around 1000 guruwalks listed in more than 60 countries. Every week, an average of 40 tours are open; usually original itineraries covering diverse topics such as: gastronomy, history, sports, arts, nightlife, architecture etc. Particularly creative are the Harry Potter tour in London, the artisan beer tour in Vienna, the Pablo Escobar tour in Medellin or the Game of Thrones tour in Dubrovnik.

This kind of tours offer a great alternative to the traditional tour and represent a great tool not only to visit a city but to discover a culture?. Indeed, they are given by knowledgeable locals passionate about their cities who show the secrets, legends, curiosities, and places of interest. They share their own perspective of the city and give recommendations about things to do or places to eat, based on a local point of view and avoiding the typical tourist traps. Besides, since the guides are only rewarded through tips given at the end of the visit, they try their best to be entertaining until the last minute?, making the tours both fun and educational.

Regarding the pricing, the average tip left is 10 euros. But people can really leave whatever they want. Some people leave 5 euros and some other 50 euros. It’s entirely up to travelers to decide the amount according to how much they enjoyed the walk. For the guides, also known as “gurus”, the activity ends up being quite profitable. The platform allows them to upload their tour proposal, with complete freedom about the schedule and the itinerary, and start receiving bookings once approved, making up to 3,000 euros a month in the most touristic cities.

Finally, one of the key aspects of GuruWalk is the fact that it is a community. A community of people passionate about traveling in a different way, learning and having fun. Turning the tours into the perfect occasion to make new friends and get together with locals and people from many different places. As Guruwalk’s founder Juan Castillo mentions: “By booking a guruwalk you will join a community of more than 30,000 travelers from all around the world that have already walked and had fun learning with a guru” .

guru walk tours

Hello friends of the world! My name is Alfredo Barrera, I have been a tour guide for 7 years, due to the pandemic, my work has been affected. I invite you to join us and discover the city with me. I ask that you be respectful and appreciate my work, only you pay for my services.

  • Free booking and cancellation Free payment tour, no set price, booking and cancellation are free

Tour description

This tour takes you to visit La Antigua Guatemala, this colonial jewel was the capital city of the Spanish kingdom which at the time extended from Chiapas Mexico to Costa Rica. The city was built at the foot of the majestic Agua Volcano and was abandoned after massive earthquakes in 1776. Years later the city was inhabited again and today you can still enjoy the colonial charm of a protected city frozen in time, with vestiges of the earthquakes that nearly destroyed it and the innovation that has made many of these ruins into some of the most amazing hotels, restaurants and parks in the world. Your guide will provide you with information about the country, its people, history and customs in Antigua.  Once you meet your tour guide in Parque Central there you will enjoy a walking tour of the city that will visit:

  • Central Park
  • Palace of the General Captains
  • Santiago's cathedral
  • Arch of Santa Catarina
  • Our Lady of Mercy Church
  • Facade of Santa Teresa de Jesus
  • Facade Church of Carmen
  • J ade Factory ( Optional )
  • Come and discover the origin of the name of Guatemala and its Mayan history included!!!

I look forward to seeing you all to discover what this wonderful and surprising city hides,. The walking tour will take approximately 90 minutes

A guruwalk is a free paid tour, which means that booking is completely free, but the guru expects to be rewarded with the desired amount at the end. Some hikers give €10 per person, others $50, you decide the price.

For organizational reasons, registration prior to participation is mandatory. Booking is super easy, fast and completely free. Book this guru walk now!

What will we visit on this tour?

I'll be near the mermaid fountain in Central Park. Mermaid Fountain, Antigua Guatemala

Antigua is one of the Americas’ most enchanting colonial cities. In its day this was one of the great cities of the Spanish empire, serving as the administrative center for all Central America and Mexican Chiapas.

Along the entire south side of the Parque Central runs the elegant two-storey colonnaded facade of the Palacio de los Capitanes Generales. A structure was built here in 1558, but as usual the first version was destroyed by earthquakes.

  • 3 Outside visit Catedral San JosĂ© Show 2 more stops

One of AntiguaÂŽs most emblematic structures, the Santa Catalina Arch is all that remains of the original convent founded here in 1609.

The church of la Merced boasts one of the most intricate and impressive facades in the city, it has been beautiful restored, painted mustard-yellow and white, and crammed with plaster molding of interlaced patterns. The
