Some or all of your deposit may be non-refundable per our cancellation schedule noted in these Terms & Conditions below. We are happy to accept cash, check (preferred) or credit card (Visa, Mastercard, Discover) for your deposit.

Throughout 2021 we limited capacity on all our tours. This policy was so overwhelmingly popular by Sunrise travelers, we have made it permanent. In 2022 and beyond, we will limit the capacity on our motorcoaches to 80%. Most Sunrise Tours travel on 50-seat coaches with extra legroom, which means guests will enjoy extra legroom AND at least 6-8 empty seats. In the rare cases when we charter a 55-seat coach, there will be at least 10 open seats on the bus.

Our popular on-board refreshment service on travel days will feature a variety of soda, beer, wine spritzers, juices and sparkling water choices served in recyclable aluminum cans. This is a safe and eco-conscious way for us to deliver the ever-popular Sunrise Tours “happy hour” on tour. We do not typically serve bottled water and ask that while on tour you be responsible for your own hydration and consider the Sunrise Tours drink service a welcome refreshment.

“There is something about flying down narrow alleys of mangrove trees that is just a rush. I could never get tired of it. The guides always give more than just a ride. You learn so much about the Everglades and the total ecosystem that it is. We most certainly will be back!

—C. from Florida

“The mangrove tour was so much fun! We saw a family of dolphins swimming along the boat, several alligators, and a few fish jumping out of the water. Riding through the mangroves was beautiful and a fun way to see the Everglades. I would recommend to anyone.”

—J. from Massachusetts

“We really enjoyed seeing the alligators. The captain of the airboat gave a lot of information about the Everglades and habitat. The addition of the two-way headsets let us all communicate during the tour. This was really a highlight of having friends down visiting us new Florida residents. Plan to bring other guests."

—K. from Florida

“We did the combo package and it was amazing! Great way to experience all 3 ways to 'see' the Everglades! Would highly recommend. All the captains for each segment were fantastic! Had a great time!"

Everglades National Park

Everglades National Park

Think about this: Everglades National Park is the largest wilderness area east of the Rocky Mountains —larger even than Grand Canyon National Park . If you look, if you listen, you might see manatees, American crocodiles, and a bursting diversity of birds, mammals, fish, and reptiles. You will probably never see, but can imagine prowling there, the endangered Florida panther. South Florida harbors a number of other wild pockets as well, like the coral reefs and mangroves of Biscayne National Park, the seagrass beds of Dry Tortugas National Park, and the myriad natural treasures of Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge, Corkscrew Swamp, Fakahatchee Strand Preserve State Park, and other parks and preserves. Off the Beaten Path speeds you past the ruckus of Florida’s gator shows, theme parks, and airboats to the quiet of such places, to see the natural state of Florida.

How would you like to travel.

OBP offers many ways to travel: Private Custom Journeys , Fly Fishing Expeditions , Ranch Vacations & Small Group Adventures .

A traveler takes video of gulls from his rocky perch on the shore.

Off the Beaten Path offers a wonderful guided small-group tour that includes Everglades , Biscayne, and Dry Tortugas National Parks, designed and offered in association with our partner National Parks Conservation Association.  We can also design a private custom trip for you, connecting you with naturalist guides along the way to deepen your experience and understanding of these unique and important ecosystems.

Here’s a rundown of our three favorite National Parks in Florida where you can see wildlife, paddle a kayak or canoe or catch a tour boat, and learn about some of Florida’s most significant wild places.

The shorthand description of Everglades National Park is “a 1.5-million-acre wetland in South Florida, often compared to a grassy, slow-moving river.” But let’s unpack the shorthand to get the deeper story. Unlike Yosemite and Grand Canyon National Parks , which were created to protect majestic scenery, Everglades National Park was established to preserve a fast-disappearing portion of the Everglades ecosystem—a complex, interdependent, and magical network of wetlands, mangroves, hardwood hammocks, and pine forests fed by a slow-moving current of water that seeps and flows out of Lake Okeechobee. This mosaic of habitats supports a community of plants and animals that aren’t found anywhere else on earth.

Nearly 90 percent of the park is designated as wilderness. You can get a great sense of it from high up in the observation tower at Shark Valley, looking out over a seemingly endless landscape with no roads, no buildings, nothing but an inexorable drift of water flowing through wetland habitat. Shark Valley is just one of three unconnected entrances to the Everglades, and each provides a different view and experience of the park. Between them you have access to all kinds of activities and explorations—you can bike through the pinelands, kayak Florida Bay watching for manatees and dolphins, paddle among the mangroves on Nine-Mile Pond, follow a ranger on a slough slog through the heart of a cypress dome, or take a wildlife watching walk along the Anhinga Trail looking for turtles, herons, and alligators.

Biscayne National Park

Less than 50 miles from Miami, Biscayne National Park is a world away from the hustle, noise, and concrete of the city—especially the concrete, as the park is 95 percent water. Four different ecosystems within those waters are protected: the mangrove swamp along the shoreline, shallow Biscayne Bay itself, the offshore Florida reef (one of the largest coral reefs in the world), and a number of coral limestone keys. Elliott Key is the largest island in the park and is the first of the true Florida Keys, formed by fossilized coral reefs. One of the neatest experiences in the park is “paddle birding”—following a park naturalist out into the mangroves in your own paddlecraft to spot such birds as osprey, frigate birds, terns, warblers, sparrows, woodpeckers.

Dry Tortugas National Park is the anchor at the bottom of the Florida Keys, lying about 68 miles off Key West in the Gulf of Mexico. The “tortugas” part of the name comes from the Spanish for turtle, with both green and loggerhead turtles nesting here. The “dry” part of the name refers to the absence of fresh surface water on the seven islands within the park. Of course the park is anything but dry if you count saltwater. In fact, the 100-square-mile park is mostly open water, and is accessible only by boat or seaplane. Visitors come to snorkel the coral reefs, dive the shipwrecks, go bird watching, and walk through Fort Jefferson, a historic coastal fortress that looks like it’s parked in the water, but is actually built atop Garden Key. Although unfinished, Fort Jefferson is nevertheless the largest masonry structure in the Western Hemisphere. The Fort was used as a prison in the mid 19 th century, and has ties to Civil War history.

Hard core birders definitely have this park on their map, as it’s one of North America’s biggest birding hotspots during the spring migration. Along with its raucous colonies of nesting sooty terns, masked boobies, and magnificent frigatebirds, birdwatchers might see roseate terns, shearwaters, and other seabirds. On stormy days or at night during the migration, long-eared owls, fork-tailed flycatchers, Cuban pewees, and other birds seek shelter in island trees and bushes.

For 2025, we have chosen to return to our starting point near Sanibel Island, Florida. Our accommodation will be the Hampton Inn in the town of Fort Myers. If enough progress has been made to restore roads from the hurricane two years ago, we will venture over to Sanibel Island on our meet up day.

Our new itinerary still includes white sandy beaches, turquoise waters, and warm ocean tailwinds, making The Florida Keys and Everglades National Park the ideal place to kick back and enjoy a laid-back winter bike tour getaway.

Join us this winter for a luxury-style tour filled with multi-sport activities. Jumpstart your spring training, or simply enjoy a warm week from the grasps of winter.

This tour starts with a short 20-mile bike ride at 1 PM across the causeway to Sanibel. We will have an orientation dinner, and the next day we cycle and shuttle into the Everglades National Park

Cycling through the Everglades allows for a slower paced tour than your typical airboat excursion because we opt for a car-free paved trail. We ride through freshwater ecosystems within Everglades National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We have plenty of time and opportunity to take in the views of the ever-changing sawgrass prairie, abundant wading birds, and an occasional alligator.

At the end of the day, we will shuttle to our resort on Key Largo.

The weather in South Florida and The Keys is always the best at this time of year. The water temperatures are in the low 70s, and the air temperature is in the upper 70s. This makes for ideal cycling temperatures. When you want a break from cycling (or perhaps you are a non-cyclist), enjoy some time poolside or on the beach at one of our lodging destinations. Grab a cocktail at the tiki bar, schedule a spa treatment, or take a visit to the Turtle Hospital or the Dolphin Research Center. If you need a break from the bike saddle, get your feet wet in the water at some of America’s top beaches or snorkel effortlessly on the water’s surface near the 3rd largest reef in the world.

The majority of our tour follows a federally recognized National Scenic Highway. The Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail is a multi-use path which closely parallels US Highway 1 for 106 miles. The town of Key West boasts of bike paths, bike routes, and quirky hotels and eateries. There is not a shortage of additional entertaining activities. Watch the sunset over Mallory Square, live entertainment and shows on Duval Street or visit the many museums and galleries.

  • At the conclusion of the tour, we can drop you at the Key West Airport for departure, or we will buy your ferry tickets for a 4 PM departure back to Fort Myers, while your guide drives the SAG Vehicle back to meet you. The fast ferry takes you from Key West to Fort Meyers. If you are not ready to go back to the cold winter, stay a few extra days on Key West or Ft Meyers Beach.

Tour Highlights

  • Cycle through Everglades National Park  on a 15-mile paved biking path (no cars allowed), enjoying the quiet beauty of the sawgrass prairies of this UNESCO World Heritage Area.
  • Stay at three gorgeous waterfront resorts  featuring heated outdoor pools & jacuzzis, spa treatments, tiki bars, hammocks, beach cafés, and watersports.
  • Great wildlife , including manatees, alligators, large wading birds, giant tarpon fish, bottlenose dolphins, sea lions, iguanas, loggerhead sea turtles, and manta rays.
  • Kayak eco-tour  through John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, the first undersea park in the U.S.
  • Guided tour of the non-profit Turtle Hospital , the only veterinary hospital in the world for rehabilitating injured sea turtles and returning them to the wild.
  • Two fun days and nights in Key West , the eclectic town that Ernest Hemmingway described as “ the best place I’ve ever been anytime, anywhere .”
  • Enjoy perfect cycling weather  (January has temps in the high 70s).
  • Assembly: Airline service to Southwest Fl International in Ft Myers
  • Depart from Key West Airport or take the fast ferry back to Ft Myers. You will arrive back at an airport hotel by 10 PM on the final day.
  • We recommend arriving the night before the tour starts. We will have an orientation breakfast before our short mid-day ride.
  • Some guests decide to stay over additional days in Key West. Call the office, we can help with that.
  • Airport hotel after the tour for later departures from Ft Myers can be arranged.

Tour Overview

Winter is a great time to visit south Florida, the subtropics of the United States. On our Florida birding tour, we experience a range of fascinating habitats from upland pine forests, prairies and cypress swamps to mangrove swamps, hardwood hammocks, and the sheltered waters of the Florida Keys. We take in the famous Ding Darling NWR for its waterbirds, Babcock-Webb WMA for the pine trio of Red-cockaded Woodpecker, Bachman’s Sparrow and Brown-headed Nuthatch, Everglades National Park for Mottled Duck, Limpkin, Wood Stork, Roseate Spoonbill, Snail Kite, Swallow-tailed Kite, Short-tailed Hawk, Purple Gallinule and others, and the Keys for southern Florida specialties such as Mangrove Cuckoo and White-crowned Pigeon.

We also take a day trip to the fabulous Dry Tortugas, to witness the onset of breeding by thousands of Sooty Terns, Brown Noddies and Magnificent Frigatebirds. We end our tour in the Miami area, where several exotic species have become naturalized – various parakeets and parrots, mynas, exotic waterbirds, Red-whiskered Bulbuls and Spot-breasted Orioles are resident here. We will also keep track of local sightings, in case a vagrant occurs close by.

Black Skimmer

Day 1: Arrival - Fort Myers

Our Florida birding tour begins with a meeting for dinner in the hotel lobby at 6:30 p.m. Night in Fort Myers.

Day 2: Ding Darling NWR and San Carlos Bay

Our first birding day is a big one, as we visit the world-renowned Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge on Sanibel Island. Among the spectacular array of waders and shorebirds we will search for some local specialities, including Roseate Spoonbill, Wood Stork and Yellow-crowned Night-Heron. With some luck we may catch a glimpse of a resident Short-tailed Hawk or Bald Eagle flying overhead. We will also stop at San Carlos Bay/Bunche Beach Preserve to look for saltwater-loving species such as Black Skimmer and Reddish Egret. In the early evening we will look for resident Burrowing Owls and Monk Parakeets in Cape Coral. Night in Fort Myers.

Day 3: Babcock-Webb WMA

On day 3 we will drive north to Babcock-Webb Wildlife Management area, a large tract of slash pine and marsh, for three pinewoods specialties - Red-cockaded Woodpecker, Brown-headed Nuthatch and a chance for Bachman’s Sparrow. Other species here include Eastern Towhee, Brown Thrasher, Eastern Bluebird and Eastern Meadowlark. Sandhill Cranes nest in the area, and roadside wetlands support American Coot and Common Gallinule.

In the afternoon, we search for species we may have missed and look nearby for Florida Scrub-Jay, a threatened species found only in Florida. Nearby wetlands support Black-bellied Whistling-Duck and Glossy Ibis. Night in Fort Myers.

Day 4: Corkscrew Swamp and Miccosukee

In the morning we visit the famous Audubon Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary. After checking the visitors center birdfeeders for Common Ground-Dove and Painted Bunting we will head out on the beautiful boardwalks in search of the swamp’s residents, including Limpkin. Many northern warblers spend their winter months here, and Tufted Titmice forage in the cypress.

In the afternoon we carry on across southern Florida towards Homestead, stopping in the Miccosukee area to search for the endangered Snail Kite foraging along the irrigation canals. Night in Homestead.

Day 5: Everglades

We spend the day in the Everglades, Marjory Stoneman Douglas’s “River of Grass”. We travel from Royal Palms to Flamingo, the terminus of Everglades National Park’s main road. We stop at well-known sites such as Anhinga Trail, where conspicuous residents include Purple Gallinule, and, appropriately, Anhinga, Mahogany Hammock with its diverse tropical hardwood trees and marvelous land snails, and Paurotis and Nine-mile Ponds for Mottled Duck, Wood Stork, Roseate Spoonbill and soaring Short-tailed Hawk.

The mudflats at Flamingo host shorebirds and terns, including Marbled Godwit, and Eco Pond occasionally has Glossy and White Ibis, and possibly Black-necked Stilt. We will also be on the watch for American Crocodile and West Indian Manatee. Our tally of birds could include many specialties of southern Florida - White-crowned Pigeon, Short-tailed and Swainson’s Hawks, Barred Owl, White-tailed Kite and even Scissor-tailed Flycatcher. Night in Homestead.

Day 6: Florida Keys

We begin the morning birding the Homestead area, this region of south florida is well known as being an excellent site for over-wintering birds, often with a decidedly western flair! After, we leave Homestead and head down to the keys. We stop first in Key Largo in search of specialties such as White-crowned Pigeon and Yellow-throated Warbler, and with luck scarcer species such as Mangrove Cuckoo or Shiny Cuckoo. Night in Key West.

Day 7: Dry Tortugas

We will take a day trip via boat to Dry Tortugas National Park to explore the birds & wildlife of the island. At this time of year we have a chance to see Sooty Tern, Masked Booby, Brown Noddy, and Magnificent Frigatebird nesting on these islands. There is also excellent snorkelling to be enjoyed here (equipment provided). Night in Key West.

Day 8: Florida Keys

This morning we will explore the lower Keys. We’ll visit Zachary Taylor State Park and the Key West Botanical Garden, as well as look for the diminutive Key Deer on Big Pine Key. The keys are a hotspot for rarities, so we will watch for reports of any unusual visitors. Recent rarities on the Keys in the last few winters have included Western Spindalis, Black-faced Grassquit, Cuban Pewee and Red-legged Thrush.

We bird our way up the Keys visiting several excellent spots along our way to Miami. Night in Miami.

Day 9: Miami Area

Our final birding day will be spent in the unlikely birding destination of urban Miami. Numerous exotic species have become naturalized here - various parakeets and parrots, mynas, Gray-headed Swamphen, Egyptian Goose, Red-whiskered Bulbul and Spot-breasted Oriole are possible. We will also keep track of local sightings, in case a vagrant occurs close by. There are usually one or two goodies to be found like the Bahama Mockingbird. Night in Miami.

Day 10: Departure - Miami

Our Florida birding tour concludes today in Miami. You can depart anytime for your flights home.

What to Expect

Overview The Florida tour is a relatively fast paced birding tour. You can expect early mornings and long days in the field, followed by a restful evening and early nights.

Food We often go birding right after (or sometimes before) breakfast and take a picnic lunch in the field, but will occasionally stop at a restaurant for lunch. We will spend the whole day birding. Most days we return in the late afternoon to our accommodations, and in the evening we arrange to go to a local restaurant. After dinner will be personal time at the hotel. Each evening after dinner we compile the day’s checklist, review the day’s activities, birds, mammals and other observations, and plan the next day’s activities.

Accommodation Generally we stay in comfortable hotel rooms in locations close to where we want to go birding.

Walking The walking on this tour is easy to moderate. Most birding locations involve just short forays away from the van, but there will be some longer days including going to Oscar Scherer and Corkscrew Swamp, which are just under 5km (3 miles) in length. Participants must be able to walk slowly for up to three hours in warm weather. The topography of southern Florida is quite flat, and most trails are well groomed, paved or boardwalks.

Driving Driving distances vary from short on some days to moderate on others, and we make frequent stops during each day’s travel.

Climate The climate of this region is generally mild to seasonably warm with average February temperatures ranging from 25°C (76° F) during the day to 16° C (60°F) at night. Temperatures will be higher from Miami southwards.

There is generally little rain at this time of year but humidity is high. The sun can be intense, so sunscreen and a brimmed hat are advised. Mosquitoes and small biting flies can be a nuisance, but are usually not severe in this region; insect repellent is recommended as a precaution. Chiggers and ticks are present; we will avoid walking in tall grass where possible.

Boat Trips Our Florida birding tour includes a boat trip out to the Dry Tortugas; motion sickness on boat trips can be an issue, although the size of the boat minimizes the problem. It may be quite cool on the water, so layered clothing underneath a waterproof windbreaker would be desirable. Boat trips are rarely cancelled due to weather, however, if this occurs, we will bird alternative locations.

You will have the option to go snorkeling in the Dry Tortugas. Standard snorkeling equipment is included, but you will want to bring your prescription mask if you require one.

Best Things to Do

Best shopping, best restaurants, best time to visit, how to get there, areas to visit, how to get around.

At just six miles long, Marco Island is the largest and only inhabited of Florida’s Ten Thousand Islands , as well as a gateway to Everglades National Park , the largest subtropical wilderness in the U.S. It’s hard to believe walking on the alabaster beaches, watching dolphins frolic in the waves, that just a few miles away lies a mangrove wonderland, black-whiskered vireos serenade the alligators and crocodiles, and a tangle of coastal hammocks teem with wildlife. Located on the Gulf of Mexico, with approximately 300 days of sunshine per year, Marco Island offers a respite of luxury tucked into the wilds of Old Florida.

Hyla Crane, executive director of Marco Island Center for the Arts , traded New York City for the small barrier island and never looked back. “It's a tropical vacation without leaving the country — the beaches are beautiful, the pace of life is calm and relaxing, and the art scene is vibrant.” she told Travel + Leisure about what makes Marco Island so special. “There are spas, museums, a theater, great restaurants, and plenty of water sports. When you cross the Jolley Bridge, you feel like you are on holiday.”

Top 5 Can’t Miss

  • Visit Marco Island Center for the Arts to immerse yourself in local art, see a show at the theater, or take a class and make a memento from your trip.
  • Book a tour with Rising Tide Explorers, the only biologist-owned-and-operated ecotour company in the region, to explore the protected mangroves, estuaries, and coastline while learning about the area's history and biodiversity.
  • Before a day on the sand, hit Doreen’s Cup of Joe for Crunchy French Toast coated in cornflakes.
  • Stay at the JW Marriott Marco Island Beach Resort for an unobstructed view of the Gulf of Mexico, and your choice of family-friendly accommodations or a separate adults-only wing.
  • Stop at one of Marco Island’s oldest restaurants, Snook Inn, for fresh Gulf seafood and a slew of boat slips where you can park without leaving the water.

The Boat House

On the banks of Collier Creek, The Boat House exudes Old Florida charm at an affordable price. With 20 guest rooms, three condo units, and one rental home, accommodations here provide a cozy, pet-friendly atmosphere. Amenities include a waterfront pool, boat docks, and common areas for gathering. Crane noted, “The proprietor is charming and it puts you right on the water.”

Hilton Marco Island Beach Resort and Spa

“If you prefer a more upscale experience, the Hilton Marco Island Beach Resort and Spa offers a superb executive chef and luxurious spa, and you are right on the beach,” added Crane. In addition to the king and queen rooms, the property also has four dining options, a heated outdoor pool, a sundeck, and a show-stopping white-sand beach.

JW Marriot Marco Island Beach Resort

For the Cadillac of accommodations, according to Crane, the only choice is the JW Marriott Marco Island Beach Resort . An ideal family resort in Florida , the property has four pools, including one with a slide, plus 13 food and beverage concepts, 10 acres of pristine beach, access to two golf courses, three fitness centers, and a 20,000-square-foot spa. Paradise by Sirene is a separate wing of adults-only suites featuring complimentary breakfast, rooftop pool access, beach butler service, your own vacation planner, and more. Crane added, “No stay is complete without a visit to 10K Alley, an amazing arcade that includes a bowling alley, mini golf, as well as a taproom with craft beers and bourbon.” Be sure to check out the sunset fire dance show, weather permitting.

Go fishing.

Surrounded by the perfect mix of fresh and saltwater, Marco Island is a fisherman’s paradise . Anglers can expect to hook snook, grouper, tripletail, snapper, redfish, tarpon, and more. Crane added, “If you enjoy eating what you catch, several restaurants on the island will take your fish and prepare it for you.”

Explore the Marco Island Historical Museum.

High on Crane’s must-stop list is the Marco Island Historical Museum , which explores southwest Florida’s Calusa Indians through artifacts unearthed from archeological digs, some dating as far back as the 1800s. One room is transformed into a replica of a Calusa village and its inhabitants' daily lives. It's also where visitors can see the famed Marco Cat, an artifact that traveled from Marco Island to the Smithsonian and now is home.

Check out the Marco Island Center for the Arts.

Marco Island Center for the Arts encompasses a working artist gallery, studios for classes, and a community theater. The Art Center, located on Winterberry Drive, showcases music, film, and presentations through dynamic monthly exhibitions, classes, and workshops for adults, free educational programs for children, and events, including wine-tasting nights and live music. The Arts Center Theatre, located on North Collier Boulevard, produces six shows each season. It also offers a theater camp, which culminates in a full-scale production — this summer, it’s "Finding Nemo," complete with digitized animated art that makes you feel like you're swimming underwater with Nemo, Dory, and friends.

Head to the beach.

Marco Island has some of the best beaches in Florida , thanks to its sunset views, access to wildlife, and water sports. Crane recommends Tigertail Beach Park if you collect shells — Florida fighting conch and lightning whelk are just a couple found here. Plus, it's a stop on the Great Florida Birding Trail for all the bird-watching enthusiasts.

Join Rising Tide Explorers.

There's no better way to see this part of the country than on a tour with a biologist who understands the ecosystem, can navigate the meandering waterways, and teach you about the history of the area. Rising Tide Explorers offers several boat and kayak tours, as well as rental options. It's the only biologist-owned-and-operated ecotour company in the area. Be sure to bring insect repellent, sunscreen, and your curiosity as you explore Collier County’s 110,000 acres of protected coastline.

The Shops of Olde Marco

Located on Royal Palm Drive on the northern tip of Marco Island, this collection of boutiques , art galleries, working artist studios, and eateries is one of Crane’s favorites. Visitors will find the Local Color Art Gallery filled with pieces created by local artists, Sage & Sand Beauty Co., Leebe Fish Restaurant and Seafood Market, and more.

Courtesy of Marco Prime

Marco Prime Steak & Seafood

Located on South Collier Boulevard, Marco Prime Steak & Seafood is a perennial Wine Spectator Award of Excellence winner and Crane’s go-to for upscale dining. She added, “The food is superb and they have an impressive wine list, along with excellent wine events.” Expect a wide variety of fresh local seafood, wagyu steaks, and uncommon offerings like Siberian caviar. The restaurant is open for dinner only, seven days per week.

Mango’s Dockside Bistro

Crane’s favorite meal is brunch, and Mango’s Dockside Bistro gets her number-one spot. “They have the best bloody mary. It's right on the water, and family-friendly,” she said. Open seven days a week from 11 a.m. until 9 p.m., the restaurant serves breakfast between December and April. Fur babies are also welcome on the patio so the whole family can join.

Can you say you’ve been to Marco Island without dining at Snook Inn ? Crane thinks not. She added, “The food is casual at this 30-year-old island staple. There's live music and an exceptional happy hour.” Boat slips abut the back of the restaurant for easy docking, and a plethora of indoor and outdoor seating provides full waterfront views. The lavender lemonade is just the ticket on a sweltering South Florida day, and the iconic salad bar with an enormous pickle barrel brings lots of Old Florida nostalgia. The grouper sandwich, blackened with crispy fries, is the specialty here and for good reason — it’s a generous portion of fish served on a soft brioche bun.

The Oyster Society

This elegant dinner-only spot gives off Prohibition-era vibes with its moody color palate, leather loungers, and lively jazz trio playing for the crowd. The Oyster Society 's extensive raw bar includes classics like shrimp cocktail, caviar service, and, of course, oysters from around the country. A sushi bar stationed in the center of the dining room, a selection of chef specialties like the Slash’N Burn Local Snapper, and a Fresh & Simple section with a variety of steak and seafood options (with your choice of cook preparation, sauce, and side) round out the menu. Make sure to leave room for dessert — the carrot cake with warm, spiced cream cheese frosting and candied carrot hay is the stuff of legend on Marco Island.

Doreen’s Cup of Joe

Set in a small strip mall, Doreen’s Cup of Joe has a warm farmhouse feel: chalkboards with specials, rooster statues, and handwritten missives adorn the walls and shelves. The breakfast and lunch hot spot is open seven days a week from 7:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. The menu features local products like Bradley’s Country Store sausage patties from Tallahassee and freshly squeezed Florida orange juice. But the star on the menu is the Crunchy French Toast coated in cornflakes with a tender cinnamon interior and served with pure Vermont maple syrup.

LagunaticPhoto/Getty Images

Marco Island’s high season runs from October through May, coinciding with stone crab season , when the local delicacies are harvested and served in restaurants around the Paradise Coast. The weather is temperate, hurricane season has passed, and businesses are fully open. It's also the pricier time to visit. Great deals can be found during the shoulder season (June through September).

Visit in March to catch Crane’s favorite annual event, the Marco Island National Fine  Art Show , a two-day event filled with work by more than 90 artists from around the country, including painting, jewelry, sculpture, glasswork, and ceramics. Local chefs provide tasty bites to enjoy while perusing pieces and meeting artists.

Approximately two hours from Fort Lauderdale and three hours from Tampa, Marco Island is easily reachable by car. If flying, Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) in Fort Myers is the closest — 48 miles — and has service from all major airlines daily. Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL), Miami International Airport (MIA), and Tampa International Airport (TPA) are also options, though will require a longer commute.

Keewaydin Island

Located between Marco Island and Naples, Keewaydin Island is accessible only by boat. With eight miles of untouched white sand, this barrier island is a quiet spot for some uninterrupted shelling. It's the only pet-friendly beach in the Naples/Marco Island area, and the Hemingway Water Shuttle departs from Marco Island seven times daily; well-behaved, leashed dogs are welcome on board. Though no amenities are available on the island, a food boat called Just Beachy Burgers & More parks just offshore between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. most days for hungry beachgoers wanting to try burgers, grouper sandwiches and tacos, hot dogs, fries, and other snacks.

Ten Thousand Islands National Wildlife Refuge

Just 12 miles down Highway 41 from Marco Island, Ten Thousand Islands National Wildlife Refuge is best accessed by boat. The refuge mainland can be reached via the Marsh Trail, a mile-long hiking and biking route that also features canoe and kayak areas, a two-story observation tower overlooking the marsh, and an adjacent parking lot. Visitors are treated to a wealth of biological diversity, including thousands of water birds, loggerhead sea turtles, and manatees feeding within the estuary. You may even catch a bald eagle soaring over the open water or an alligator observing the scene.

There’s no getting around it — you need to rent a car to get the full experience on Marco Island. Luckily, Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) in Fort Myers has all the major companies like Enterprise, Avis, and Budget. Once on Marco Island, there are several bike, golf cart, and scooter rental shops. Generous bike lanes surround the island, making it easy to navigate without a car. Uber also services the island for those who prefer to avoid driving. But if experiencing the abundant nature just a stone’s throw from Marco Island is on the agenda, opt for a rental.

Another popular option is Crabby Cabbie . For just $5, you can get a ride anywhere on Marco Island, and for three dollars more, you can visit nearby Goodland , home to a population under 400. Crane described the destination as a “drinking village with a fishing problem.”

One of the state's, if not the nation's, most beautifully restored piers, circa 1962, defines this little town.

Cocoa Beach Pier in Florida

From restaurants to bars and unique boutiques, browse along Westgate Cocoa Beach Pier in the sea mist overlooking the beach and surfers, join the local fishing "club," or simply enjoy the best views from the 800-foot tip. After a day of jet skiing and other fun sports for an adventurous couple, George McLeod Memorial Park offers to relax against the endless sea lit pink under the soft glow of the sunset. The Wizard of Oz Museum & Van Gogh , an all-time favorite attraction to the north, delights cinephiles and culture fans with art and collectibles from the screen, plus memorabilia at the large gift shop. Attracting families, sightseers, and nature lovers alike, this underrated town can make you guilty of an Instagram "overfeed," so don't post yourself getting pampered at one of its many spas.

Trolley driving through Main Street in Dunedin, Florida

Captivating the senses with some of the East Coast's most stunning beaches and its Old Florida feel downtown, Dunedin is a nostalgic reminder of what vacations used to be. Found by two Scotsmen in 1899 as one of the state's oldest towns, Dunedin's charming heritage entices visitors of all ages during the annual Scottish celebrations. Taste the small town flavor through delicious restaurants and one-of-a-kind shops, steps from the exciting outdoors like trails and golf courses. Couples, families, and nature lovers alike enjoy exploring the beachfronts of Honeymoon Island State Park and the white-sanded Caladesi Island State Park with swimming, boating, fishing, and picnic facilities. Take a walking tour through the historic district, with its earliest buildings dating back to 1852.

The marina in Dunedin, Florida.

With Old Tampa Bay at the backdoor, Josiah Cephas Weaver Park features a cool playground, while Hammock Park is a tranquil nature preserve, home to century-old trees and a butterfly garden with 225 plant species. Don't miss the historic 18-hole golf course open since 1927 and the next-door Fine Art Center with art galleries, a variety of classes, a gift shop, and a cafe. Flaunting it all and more under an hour from Tampa, escape the summer crowds, city prices, or the cold back home to lose yourself in the forgotten nature of its parks. Resurface for the craft brewery scene after Osprey Trailhead jets you into a verdant world with unique trees. Everglades City

Airboat rides along the Barron River, Everglades City

Another forgotten Old Florida gem through no fault of its own, Everglade City is simply lost amid the eponymous natural wonder, the Everglades National Park . Talk to someone about a "moving river" and you might get a blank stare, as few are aware of the composition hidden beneath this unique landscape. Its unreplicable tranquility feels unreal to city minds, and the laiback feel downtown-foreign, but all as on succumb to the small town charms. Enjoy life at the slow pace of the Everglades and capture the scenery in the palm of your hand with views from the Ernest Hamilton Observation. The city's well-preserved downtown features historic buildings and other exciting attractions like the Old Collier County Courthouse and Bank of Everglades Building, as well as the nearby Everglades Florida Adventures.

Old Collier County Courthouse in use as City Hall of Everglades City, Florida

Perfect to visit for history and nature lovers alike when it's "cold" back home with favorable Sunshine State temperatures, many enjoy the warm atmosphere at Island Cafe over an American diner-style and island-inspired menu items, unique digs, and a family-friendly space. As the number of visitors lowers from December to April, so do the water levels, but your curiosity should be through the roof about the perfect opportunity to explore. The old-fashioned, walkable town without traffic is best to sift through on foot, via car, or a pedal, while the friendly locals are some real characters. Take the opportunity to meet a new friend during the popular Captain Jack's Airboat Tours, which offers airboats, buggies, and more ways to unveil the secrets behind mangroves, including unforgettable wildlfe encounters like alligators, snakes, otters, wintering birds, and more.

Fernandina Beach

Main street of Historic town center of Fernandina Beach on Amelia Island

Fernandina Beach would not be overlooked were it not a remote Amelia Island destination. But, steeped in quaint charm and history, this northernmost Atlantic Florida city offers a perfect respite from the Greater Jacksonville bustle. The thirteen-mile-long Amelia Island is the southernmost of the Sea Islands chain along the east coast. Part of Nassau County today and having flown eight different flags since 1562, it is the "Isle of 8 Flags." Priorly inhabited by the Timucuan Indian tribe, cultural influences remain, including those from France, Spain, Great Britain, and even the Patriots of Amelia Island. Four miles wide at its widest point, Amelia Island flaunts 13 miles of pristine beaches and perfect weather conditions. Come for the vibrant celebration of May's Isle of Eight Flags Shrimp Festival or visit any season to indulge in scrumptious sea delicacies, perhaps after a round of top-notch golf.

Aerial view of the Fernandina Beach, Florida

Fernandina offers prime access to Amelia's top attractions, including the circa-1838 Amelia Island Lighthouse. Book a monthly tour in advance! From upscale resorts to adorable bed and breakfasts, the choice is pleniful, together with a walkable downtown. You won't have to push elbows through attractions or wait in line for its popular restaurants and shops—but the decades-old Fernandina's Fantastic Fudge is worth it every time. Between the downtown and the dog-friendly Main Beach Park, Egan's Creek Greenway Trail is a spectacular open biking and hiking area with wildlife like alligators, great blue herons, wild passion flowers, and morning glories. Minutes north, the beachfront Fort Clinch State Park flaunts wildlife trails, camping, and a circa-1864 intact fort along the northeastern edge with guided tours of barracks, prisons, blacksmith’s shops, and monthly cannon firings.

Gasparilla Island

View from above of large residential houses in island small town Boca Grande on Gasparilla Island in southwest Florida

While the island puts up a fierce front, named after an infamous pirate, José Gaspar, Gasparilla Island craves attention as an underrated destination bursting with charms. Away from the mainland, with easy access from the airport, you will discover Boca Grande's historic district with charming shops and vintage architecture. Accessible even in the winter from the Boca Grande Causeway, the state park beckons visitors in after sighting the intact historical lighthouse, the island's namesake. Gasparilla Island State Park features trails, beaches, and campsites; imagine yourself a rugged explorer all the way down with bird-watching opportunities to the restored Port Boca Grande Lighthouse. Built in 1890, it crowns the southernmost tip of the island, with a museum backing its commitment to guide ships into the safety of the harbor.

Gasparilla Island Lighthouse in Boca Grande, Florida

Both Sandspurs or the Boca Grande Lighthouse offer shaded pavilions by the parking lot with scenic ocean views. After a picnic, find yet another slice of sand on the island's southern end to lounge on without crowds. From kayaking and boat tours to swimming, snorkeling, and fishing, the low-key barrier island halfway between Sarasota and Fort Myers is the perfect family vacation, romantic getaway, or friend trip. Home to under 2,000 people, a visit from November to mid-February has favorable weather conditions and virtually no traffic at other top attractions like Cayo Costa State Park and Boca Grande Beach, so get hopping around via walking, a car, or a pedal. Lastly, bring a memory from your shelling ventures as a pretty gift or memorabilia and reminisce about your best winter getaway along the gulf .

Historic downtown Micanopy, near Gainesville, Florida.

At over two centuries old, Micanopy is the oldest inland town in Florida , relinquishing its history at the Micanopy Historical Society Museum. Surrounded by a scenic landscape, this picturesque and viciously underrated town ranges in pursuits from gator watching to antiquing. Its historic downtown buildings are tangled within magnificent live oaks and draping Spanish moss. Micanopy bursts with charisma through boutiques and cafes, filling up historic architecture with shopping, art viewing, and delicious dining. Cholokka Boulevard is like an anthill on weekends, alive with locals and visitors mingling along historic storefronts like vintage shops and eateries, including sweet treats and delicious delis. The circa-1845 Herlong Mansion Bed & Breakfast is also here. Directly north, Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park offers the chance to spot free-roaming bison and wild horses.

Micanopy, Florida, Peaceful, serene pond on a famous horse farm in Florida

Many enjoy the "literal" offerings at Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Historic State Park in Cross Creek. Its gardens and citrus groves honor the author, while her revamped house features live reenactments of the 1930s and stories, as well as the nearby Yearling Restaurant. From Antique City Mall to Delectable Collectibles and Dakota Mercantile, Micanopy Outpost offers sought-after Florida Highwaymen paintings, with more treasures, art, and gifts at JEMsOriginals. Shop for vintage and modern home decor and art at the Shop in Micanopy, while Coffee N’ Cream, Old Florida Cafe, and Bake House are all popular choices for a bite. Home to under 1,000 residents, Micanopy is just 10 miles south of Gainesville, the entertainment hub, if you've never been. Don't miss a quaint stroll through Micanopy Historic Cemetery, and stop at one of the country stores for goodies to bring home.

White sands, emerald waters, and blue sky at Navarre Beach, Florida.

Ah, Navarre —with the name sounding waves of tranquility along its dozen blissful Gulf Coast beaches, sightseeing starts along the coastal Highway 98. Cross the Santa Rosa Sound to Santa Rosa Island's four-mile Navarre Beach. Flaunting the Gulf Islands National Seashore, three of its colorful artificial reefs are accessible for scuba diving and snorkeling to see magnificent marine life up close. From Navarre Main Beach to Navarre East Beach and Opal Beach, the undulating view takes your breath away. Explore the coast on foot or via kayak, canoe, or small boat, or choose from a score of nature trails and bike paths. Forty minutes north, the Blackwater River State Forest features tranquil sand-bottom rivers.

Navarre, a destination for weddings, newlyweds, and families, enjoying a quiet stroll along its sugar-white sand beaches never gets crowded. Emerald-green waters caress the shore, while Navarre Beach Park is home to the Navarre Beach Sea Turtle Conservation Center. Among its many allures, this stunning town evokes a sense of vacation from your own childhood. Visit in early April through May for the best beach experience to relax and take in Florida’s seaside charm solely with your loved ones. The quiet inlet on the sound, "Mom's Beach," calls parents to relax while the kids have fun splashing, castle building, and running within sight. At the foot of the Navarre toll bridge, the five-acre Navarre Park features a playground and a splash pad.

Home to some of the nation's most popular cities, beach towns, and attractions, many head to the southeasterly state to party, trace the coast in a vehicle, and enjoy some beach-bumming in between, while others like to explore the waters and the islands around them. These smaller towns offer all the beauty of the Sunshine State at a fraction of the cost, crowds, and time spent getting around.

So relish the slower pace in the sea breeze, indulge in seafood, and soak up the unspoiled natural beauty like at Navarre Beach. This "underrated" small town along the emerald-green waters lapping up the Gulf Islands National Seashore offers gorgeous miles of undeveloped sugar-fine beaches, access to three colorful reefs, and the Turtle Conservation Center.

Hurricane Debby washed ashore $1 million worth of cocaine onto Florida beaches

The U.S. Customs and Border Patrol in Miami said 25 packages of cocaine totaling up to 70 pounds were discovered on a beach in the Florida Keys. In a post on Facebook, officials say the packages have a street value of up to $1 million.

In the aftermath of Hurricane Debby earlier this month, more than 100 pounds of cocaine worth $1 million washed up on a beach in the Florida Keys.

The U.S. Customs and Border Patrol in Miami reported that the storm blew ashore 25 packages of cocaine totaling up to 70 pounds onto a beach in the Florida Keys. According to the law enforcement agency, a good Samaritan alerted authorities after coming across the packages.

In a post on X, Samuel Briggs, the acting chief patrol agent of the U.S. Border Patrol’s Miami division, wrote that authorities confiscated the packages of drugs — which have an estimated value of more than $1 million.

And the discoveries along Florida's beaches didn't end there.

One week later, near Everglades City in Collier County, Fla., the Collier County Sheriff's Office discovered a package containing more than half a million dollars worth of cocaine. In a Facebook post last week, Collier County Sheriff Kevin Rambosk said that the boaters discovered a 56-pound package of cocaine floating in the mangroves off Panther Key Island.

The package contained 25 individually wrapped kilograms of cocaine and had an estimated street value of $625,000, according to the Facebook post.

"Large packages of drugs ranging from marijuana to hashish to cocaine have been discovered floating in the waters off Miami and the Florida Keys," authorities said.

A team of detectives from Collier County Sheriff's Office and its vice and narcotics bureau is working to find out where precisely the drugs originated, as authorities said the drugs most likely washed in with the tides from the East Coast.

Debby made landfall as a hurricane on Aug. 5. The deadly storm spent nearly a week bringing flooding and tornadoes along the East Coast of the U.S. before moving into Canada.

Several states, including Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina, experienced power outages and flooding, as the National Hurricane Center called the storm a “life-threatening situation.”
