The Khopra Ridge is located away from the busier trails of Annapurna region but provides equally remarkable views of the Himalayas including Dhaulagiri, Annapurna South, Fang and Nilgiri. Another attraction of our trek is the holy Kaire Lake, which requires a little wandering away from the Kopra Ridge. We begin our trip in Kathmandu with visits to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Next day, we fly to Pokhara, drive to Syauli bazaar and begin trekking from there. We leave the main trail after Tadapani and for the next few days walk along a remote trail while staying at the community tea-houses. The 13-day trip is suitable for those who wish to enjoy the grandeur of Mt. Annapurna while also taking pleasure in the solace of a more remote trail. Complete with unique heritage, culture and breathtaking landscape, the trip will be well worth our time.

Lasts more than a week and with up to 12 days walking 6-8 hours each day up and down the hills. These take you up to an altitude of 4,500m / 14,800 feet and require at least 3 months’ fitness preparation prior to the trek.

Outline Itinerary

Trip itinerary, arrival in kathmandu.

Upon our arrival in the Tribhuwan International Airport (TIA) in Kathmandu, we will be greeted by a representative from Himalayan Glacier who will drop us off at our hotel. After checking in, we take a rest or visit Himalayan Glacier’s office. We may also stroll in the streets of Thamel, a tourist hub in Kathmandu for some souvenir shopping. In the evening, there will be a welcome dinner hosted by Himalayan Glacier where you will be served excellent Nepalese cuisine which will introduce you to the country’s food culture. Overnight in Kathmandu.

Maximum Altitude

Accommodation, sightseeing in kathmandu.

Today after breakfast we enjoy a guided tour to several of the most historical and spiritual attractions in Kathmandu which are also listed as UNESCO World Heritage sites. We visit the historic Durbar Square, the sacred Hindu temple of Pashupatinath, the famous ‘Monkey Temple’ (Swayambhunath) and Buddhist shrine (Bouddhanath), which is also one of the largest stupas in the world. At noon, we get our equipment checked by our climbing leader, get introduced to fellow participants, and discuss our trip at Himalayan Glacier’s office. Overnight in Kathmandu.

Fly to Pokhara, drive to Syauli Bazaar and trek to Ghandruk

We fly to Pokhara early in the morning. We can catch amazing views of the Himalayas from the right side of our airplane. Upon our arrival in Pokhara, the beautiful lake city, we are rewarded with magnificent views of the Himalayas including Dhaulagiri, Manaslu, Machhapuchhre, the five peaks of Annapurna and others. Later, we drive to Syauli Bazaar and start the trek to Ghandruk. The village is a major recruitment centre for the famous Gurkha soldiers and is the hub of the Annapurna Conservation Area Project, which promotes many varied ecological projects. Overnight in Ghandruk.

Ghandruk to Tadapani

In Ghandruk, we get to enjoy astonishing views of Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), Annapurna South, and Hiunchuli Mountains. From here we continue upwards through Deurali and into the dense rhododendron forests. The Rhododendron is Nepal’s national flower and when they bloom, the forests turn into gardens of dazzling red flowers when seen from the air or from afar. After trekking over a small pass we reach Tadapani where we get to enjoy excellent views of Machhapuchhre, Annapurna and Hiunchuli mountains. There are many Tibetans in the village who sell things for the tourists to take back home as a souvenirs. Overnight in Tadapani.

Tadapani to Dobato

After Tadapani we leave the main trail and for the next five days we will walk in a more remote area of the Annapurna region. On our trek today we get to appreciate the diverse flora and fauna of the region and of course the magnificent view of Dhaulagiri and Annapurna South. Trekking in a relatively easy trail we reach Dobato which is dominated by the excellent view of the Annapurna South. Overnight in Dobato.

Dobato to Upper Chistibung

After breakfast, we descend through open ground and beautiful forest to reach the pastures of Lower Chistibung. Next, we ascend gradually through a forest before reaching Upper Chistibung which is a temporary herder’s settlement. If you’re lucky, you might even spot the colorful Lophophorus (Danphe), the national bird of Nepal, as well as Himalayan thar on the grassy ridge high above the trail. Overnight in Upper Chistibung.

Trek to Khopra Ridge

We embark on a steady climb above the tree line through alpine meadows and pastures to reach Khopra. As we approach Khopra Ridge, we see the tip of Annapurna South. Upon reaching Khopra we go for a short walk down Khopra Ridge to a viewpoint overlooking Kali Gandaki river far below in this deep valley. From Khopra we also admire the stunning mountain panorama including Mt. Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri and Annapurna South. Overnight in Khopra.

Rest day in Khopra Ridge: Tour of Kaire Lake

We begin trekking from around six in the morning towards the Kaire Lake from where we attain excellent views of the Fang and surrounding mountains. Considered to be a sacred lake by the Hindus, it is believed that bathing in the lake will help attain Nirvana. As Hinduism and Buddhism are intricately related in Nepal, we can even see a number of Hindu and Buddhist shrines on the lakeside. For those of us who do not want to walk all the way to the lake, a half day walk from Khopra can also be arranged. We have packed lunch today. Overnight in Khopra Ridge.

Trek to Swanta Village

From Khopra Ridge we descend off the hillside and continue downhill on a steep trail. Along the way we get more views of Mount Dhaulagiri with the mountain providing a lovely backdrop to the terraced fields and traditional houses in the nearby villages. Overnight in Swanta village.

Trek to Ulleri

From Swanta we descend through the village fields to a small river and take a quick look at the local water mill. From here we cross the suspension bridge and head upwards to the village of Chittre, where we’ll join the main trekking trail at Ghorepani. After Ghorepani we descend through rhododendron forest to Ulleri where we stay the night.

Trek to Naya Pul then drive to Pokhara

On our way to Nayapul, we get to enjoy the amazing hill landscape of western Nepal. Our trek will end at Nayapul where we board our vehicle to Pokhara, the beautiful lake city.  Even from the city we are rewarded with magnificent views of the Himalayas including Dhaulagiri (8,167m), Manaslu (8,156m), Machhapuchhre (6,993m), the five peaks of Annapurna and others. We check-in to our hotel and take a rest. We may also stroll in the streets of Pokhara and just enjoy being in one of the most beautiful cities of Nepal. Overnight in Pokhara.

Sightseeing in Pokhara then fly to Kathmandu

We leave our hotel early in the morning to visit the Shanti Stupa, a Buddhist Stupa ranked as the top second attraction in Pokhara by TripAdvisor. While here, we enjoy amazing view of the sun as it rises from the mighty Himalayas. We then continue touring the city’s landmarks including Davis Falls, Shiva Cave and  the International Mountain Museum (IMM). We also do some boating in Phewa Lake, the largest lake in Pokhara and visit Bindyabasini Temple located at the center of the lake. We fly to Kathmandu in the late afternoon. To celebrate the successful completion of our journey, we will have a farewell dinner in the evening. Overnight in Kathmandu.

Final departure

Our journey in Nepal comes to an end today! A Himalayan Glacier representative will escort us to the airport approximately 3 hours before our scheduled flight. On our way home, we have plenty of time to plan our next adventure in the wonderful country of Nepal.

Annapurna Community Trek

The Annapurna Community trek provides a unique and close-up insight into village life, close to the magnificent peaks of the Annapurnas, Machhapuchhre and Dhauligiri, in the beautiful Annapurna region. Like the more popular Poon Hill trek or Annapurna base camp trek, this trek takes you through very similar landscapes. In fact, Poon Hill is visible from just below the ridges of Mohare Danda.

Trekking through pristine and unspoiled area, you are unlikely to meet many other trekkers. Instead, you will meet the local farmers, yak herders and village people in the communities where you will be treated more as a guest rather than a tourist. As a model of a public-private partnership for the sustainable development this trek economically support villages and communities that lie along this trail.

Through the trek you will stay in community lodges. In some of the villages, as an alternative to the community lodges, you will stay with local families in their home. This is a great way to get a closer insight on how the local people live, and experience the culture and life of the community. Local villagers here not only offer accommodation and food, but also cultural programs and an insight to the village life.

  • A unique close-up glimpse of the Himalayan lifestyle.
  • Pristine and unspoilt
  • This is one of the less crowded and trekked areas in the Annapurna region.
  • Get inspired by the local people, and visit community projects.
  • The fantastic panoramic sight of the Annapurnas; close-up views of Dhaulagiri and Macchapucchre

ABOUT ANNAPURNA COMMUNITY HOMESTAY & LODGES

These are built in an environmentally-friendly way, from local materials and using local labor. The local villagers run the lodges and the purpose is to ensure that the whole community share the benefits from the income coming from tourism.

Most accommodation will be on a twin-share basis, though occasionally you might be accommodated on a multi-share basis (sometimes in homestay accommodation). You will need to be flexible!

In the villages along the trail, you will visit handmade paper production facility, cheese factory, mushroom farms, yak and cow cross breeding farm, sacred forests and temples, community nursery and heath post using advanced telemedicine.

Khopra Mohare Trek

The trail was developed under initiation from Dr. Mahabir Pun to bring tourist to his birthplace to promote sustainable development by means of Eco-tourism. The whole concept of this route is based on community investment for the sustainable future. The villages in the regions have invested in the lodges and hotels along the trail such that the revenue from the hotel/lodges goes back to the schools of the villages.

The religious attraction of this trail is the holy Khair Lake, which is located at 4600 meters from the sea level. As the lake is located at higher altitude, the visitors need to have slight experience of higher altitude trekking. However, one can skip the Khair Lake if there is a time limitation, as you do not need to go to the Khair Lake to complete the trail. On top of this, trekkers can enjoy the best sunrise and sunset from both Mohare danda (3300m) and Khopra Ridge.

Hence, due to such rich variety, trekkers can enjoy the cultural diversity of the local people. Best Community Treks in Nepal for 2021!

  • Last Updated on Mar 22, 2023

Table of Contents

The Year 2020 at a Glance:

The year 2020 could not remain supportive to the entire humankind due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Begun from Wuhan, China since 31 December 2020, the novel coronavirus has infected around 88.0 million people with 1.91 million deaths around the world as of today. We are sad to have shared this news herewith this blog.

However, now the situation has come almost under control due to the successful development of the COVID vaccines. The frontline workers such as the health personnel, volunteers, and security forces have already received the vaccines in most of the countries. The others are on the process of getting it very soon, perhaps within February 2021!

We have already come out of the dreadful year 2020 and entered into 2021 with a new hope to become things better. Evaluating the current situations and predicting the future, almost all the countries have undone the lockdowns and travel restrictions as well.

Yes, travel restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic prevented many of travel enthusiasts and daredevils from doing their parts. Nonetheless, the situation has been easier now right in front of our own eyes. The global tourism market has already opened and operated bookings of travels, tours and adventurous tourism activities.

The tourism industry of Nepal is also hardest hit by the global pandemic resulting into the loss of jobs and income-generating activities. Thousands of people involved in the tourism industry are directly and indirectly affected that many of them have changed their profession as well. To provide a little relief to the national tourism sector, the Ministry of Culture, Tourism, and Civil Aviation reopened the Nepalese tourism industry from 17 September 2020.

The first trekking permits were issued on 22 September to the Bahrain Prince and his team for peak climbing and Manaslu expedition. The team successfully completed their Manaslu expedition 2020 and climbing Lobuje East (6,119m) until the first half of October 2020. This news drew once more the attraction of the daredevils from around the world towards the Nepalese Himalayas.

The Recent Scenario:

Although there is low risk of the COVID-19 in the city areas, the mountain tourism, trekking, and mountaineering are still safe. It is so because the mountain regions are less crowded due to winter season at first and then, remoteness. Nepal has the 264,000 COVID-19 cases and 1,909 death tolls as of today. This graph shows that this Himalayan country located in the South Asian Region is still safe for travelling and trekking unless other rules oppose.

Nepal resumed the international flights from September 3 while the domestic flights from September 20, 2020. Although the number of tourists visiting Nepal in 2020 has decreased by 80%, there is evidence of the tourists’ flow in the country. community trek nepal

Nepal is a heaven for adventurous tourism such as mountaineering, trekking, and adventurous sports items. The presence of the Great Himalayas has been a boon for the mountain tourism of Nepal. Hundreds of thousands daredevils come here to have a lifetime experience of trekking in Nepal. You can do all types of treks: moderate, strenuous, and challenging in the Himalayas in different times of the year.

Apart from this, there are tens of community treks in Nepal developed for promoting natural and cultural heritage sites of those communities. Community trek in Nepal is focused on publicizing the local culture, tradition, and lifestyle in the international tourism market. Promoting community trek not only benefits the international trekkers but also gives economic benefits to the local people.

As the local people involve in tourism activities, they get employment opportunities and begin entrepreneurship. They can sell their local products to the tourists and earn foreign currency to support their daily activities as well. In the long-term, the local communities can draw the attention of the world towards them.

To introduce you to the local culture, tradition, and lifestyle, A1 Excursion Adventure has focused on some of the best community treks in Nepal for 2021. These best community treks can be connected with the popular treks in Nepal such as Annapurna Circuit Trek, Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek, Everest Gokyo Lake Trek, etc. Let’s take a quick look at the best community treks of Nepal for 2021:

Sikles Community Trek is a journey through the pristine villages of Annapurna Region up to Sikles Village. Trekking to Sikles Village is one of the best community model treks of Nepal giving you a unique experience. Sikles Village is the second largest Gurung village of Nepal i.e. Bhujung Village of Lamjung is the largest of this kind.

Local communities of the trekking route are actively involved in providing homestay facilities to the trekkers. The mothers’ groups of these villages are contributing for the economic progress of their families and communities as a whole. Thus, it is known as Sikles Community Trek. Also known as Sikles Gurung Cultural Heritage Trek, it provides an opportunity to the foreign students for cultural sharing.

During your stay at Sikles Village, you can get to interact with the Gurung people to have in-depth knowledge about their rites and rituals. Additionally, the flora and fauna of the ACAP and snowcapped peaks of Annapurna (8,091m) Massif, Dhaulagiri (8,167m) Massif, and Mt. Fishtail (6,993m) add to the beauty of ABC Trek.

Tangting Village Community Trek

One of the major highlights of Sikles Community Trek is Tangting Village (1,665m). Although there are 6 local teahouses serving the national and international trekkers, Tangting homestay is a must-take experience while in Sikles Community Trek. 14 homestay sites are in operation in the village and they provide services to the trekkers on rotation. Manaslu Circuit Trek

community trek nepal

Manaslu Region trekking is an off-the-beaten-path trek moving around Mt. Manaslu located in Manalsu Conservation Area Project. Opened just in the early 90s to the foreign trekkers, it consists of restricted area that you need a special permit to explore the magical Manaslu region. It is best known for the hidden valleys, less crowded trekking trail, unspoiled natural beauty and lifestyle, culture and tradition untouched by modern technology. This trekking in Nepal can be connected with the popular Annapurna Circuit Trek crossing Larkya La Pass (5,213m) while experiencing the extreme wilderness and authentic rustic villages of the Himalayas.

During Samagaun acclimatization day, you can visit the Birendra Lake, which is about 3 square kilometers located nearby the Pungen Glacier and Gompa. Manaslu Base Camp Trek needs about 5 hours from Samagaun. Manaslu region is famous for the hidden Tsum Valley, which was opened for the foreign tourists only from 2008 AD. It is a sacred pilgrimage site, which stands against the backdrop of Ganesh Himal, Sringi Himal and Bouddha Himalayan Ranges. Most interestingly, the people residing here are from mostly Tibetan origin and speak a typical dialect.

Ruby Valley Trek

Max. Elevation: 3,850m (Pangsangla Pass)

Culture: Gurung, Tamang, and Aryan

Himalayas: Langtang (7,234m), Ganesh Himal (7,422m), and Manaslu (8,163m) Ranges

Ruby Valley Trek is a community trek located on the Great Himalayan Trail (GHT: 1,700km) in the Ganesh Himal (7,422m) Range. As the name suggests, this classic valley is rich in minerals such as quartz and rock crystals. Trekking to Ruby Valley is an opportunity to explore and experience remote areas of Nepal.

The Ganesh Himal has a shape of an elephant’s trunk, so is named after the Hindu God Ganesh. Ruby Valley Trek begins from Syabrubesi, the gateway to Langtang Gosainkunda Trek, Langtang Valley Trek, and Kailash Mansarovar Yatra in Tibet. Gradually ascending, the trekking route moves along the rustic villages of Langtang Region and enters into the Ruby Valley after crossing Pangsangla Pass (3,850m).

Due to the remoteness, the local community people are running homestay sites to facilitate the trekkers. Homestay services give employment and economic benefits to the local communities on the one hand while on the other, the trekkers get the basic teahouse facilities during the trek. The people from Magar, Gurung, and Aryan communities inhabit the villages of the Ruby Valley Trekking trail. You can find amazing clusters of Buddhist cultural heritage sites. Despite geographical remoteness, the people of this region are honest and helping to each other. They follow the Nepali ethics “Guests are Gods!”

While walking along the Langtang National Park premises, you see several animals and birds living in the rhododendron, oak, pine, fir, and birch forests. The appealing views of Langtang Lirung (7,227m), Ganesh Himal (7,422m), Bouddha Himal (6,692m), and occasionally of Manaslu (8,163m) help you undermine the challenging trails.

Annapurna Base Camp Trek (ABC Trek)

community trek nepal

Itinerary: 8 days to 17 days

Max. Elevation: 4,130m (Annapurna Base Camp)

Culture: Gurung, Magar, and Aryan

Of teahouse trekking in Nepal, Annapurna Base Camp trek is the most popular. The popularity of Annapurna Region Trekking is growing every day due to some genuine reasons. Due to the moderate trekking trails suitable for people of all ages, natural beauties, and cultural diversities, the national and international trekkers choose it.

Following the trails that go across the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP), you trek past the ethnic villages of Gurung, Magar, and Aryan communities. The homestay facilities in the Gurung villages give you a different experience of culture, tradition, and lifestyle. The local people serve you with organic food produced in their own farmland with the best hospitality. The cultural shows performed in the evening are not less exciting for a lifelong memory while trekking in Nepal.

The wild birds and animals of the ACAP and the majestic mountains of Annapurna (8,091) Massif, Dhaulagiri (8,167m) Massif, and Machhapucchre Himal (6,993m) are the added beauties of this trek. Although you can do Annapurna Base Camp Trek all times of the year, spring and autumn are the best time for ABC Trek.

We had the most amazing trip in November 2022. Community Action Treks made everything so easy and straightforward - from booking the trip, giving us travel advice and collecting us from the airport. We felt like VIP's throughout the holiday.

We visited some of the charity projects too and were greeted by the villagers with such warmth and generosity. It was truly a trip like no other, and we're so happy that some of the money we paid went to supporting these amazing communities.

Detailed Itinerary

After breakfast this morning we leave Kathmandu and travel around 60 Km to the starting point of Rafting. Charaudi or Malekhu depending on water Level after monsoon. After guide briefs about raft and river, the trip hits a few class 2 or 3 rapids and then we stop for lunch. After Lunch white water hits a class 2 to 3 rapid and travel overland to Pokhara, a stunning lakeside town with incredible mountain views, 200 km west of Kathmandu. On our way, we drive along the banks of the Marshyangdi River, past stunning traditional villages, terraced fields and if the weather is good we will have some fantastic picturesque views to the Himalayan Range.

Distance: 200 Kilometers, Duration: 5/6 hours, Altitude: 827 meters

Starting from Pokhara, you are driven to Galeshwor, where you start your trek. Heading up to Bas Kharka, you pass scattered farmhouses, climbing through the forest and then orange groves as you approach this attractive village. You will have time to explore this Magar village, maybe visit the school and health post, and in season, enjoy the sweet oranges that grow on the hillsides here. (825m; 3 hours).

Today we have an easy day of 2-3 hrs down the hill to Dandakharka community lodge.Along the way you will come across clearing in the rhododendron forest where the local villagers from down the mountain for different purposes . Dandakharka is a lovely but basic community lodge set in an open field.

We leave the beautiful place of Dhanda Kateri behind and trek towards the overlooking valleys. We stop by lunch on the way . After lunch, it is a leisurely walk on to Nangi, the main village where you will spend the night. Here you can visit the school, see how the villagers make paper from the locally grown plants, visit a medicinal plant nursery, and a number of other income-generating projects.

We can start bit early and take rest on the way.We climb through forest, with stunning views of the mountains. Upon the top of Mohare Hill, you can see the Himalayas stretching as far as the eye can see, with close-up views of Macchupucchre (Fish Tail Mountain) and Dhaulagiri. Surrounded by forest, don’t be surprised to meet yaks grazing nearby. There is no village here, but here is the highest wireless internet relay station in Nepal, providing internet to the remote villages for schools and health posts that use tele-medicine, linking up with hospitals in Kathmandu to provide better healthcare in the villages.

A fantastic ridge walk, with marvellous views in every direction, We have a steep ascent to get us going and then a more gradual uphill walk takes us to our camp at Ghorepani. We will pass through some delightful villages and the beautiful, dense rhododendron forest so characteristic of Nepal at these altitudes! If the weather is clear we will see the stunning views from Ghorepani , making the climb well worth it . At Ghorepani , we are on the main Annapurna Circuit route and there likely to be many travelers passing through the ridges – top settlements in both directions. Ghorepani literally means “Horse water” and is a popular stopping place for the mules trains which ply the route from Pokhara to Jomsom and beyond. The impressive peak, which can be seen across the broad valley of the Kali Gandaki to the northwest, is Dhaulagiri. We stop by lunch at Ghorepani before we trek another 2 hours to Swanta downhill.

Today from Swanta we trek uphill towards the Chistibung.Few hours we walk before we reach river. There we take a rest and then we ascend to the hillside and continue up steeply hill. You will retrace the route to Chistibung. We then take our lunch break here before we resume our trek towards the Khopra Danda. This should take another 2-3 hours. we stay here overnight in the newly constructed lodge. We come across schools supported the local income from trekkers , and there is time to pay visit, and perhaps interact with the kids. In the morning we get the stunning view of sunrise.

To reach the ridge at Kopra, you will embark on a steady climb that carries you above the tree line. This area is noted for wildlife, so you should keep your eyes open for Himalayan tahr and Danfe pheasant. The best way to tackle the climb is to ascend steadily, take your time and rest as often as you wish. You will reach the lodge on Kopra Ridge in time for lunch and will be greeted by more awe-inspiring views. This extraordinary panorama includes Annapurna South, towering directly above you at only six kilometres away, with Fang and Nilgiri prominent to the north. Across the depths of the Kali Gandakhi Valley, the Dhaulagiri Himal dominates the entire western skyline. The Kopra Community Lodge is the highlight of our work in the region.

Today is comparatively easier than other days.We descend gradually on the trail through ridges. We than hike straight through the ridge with view of Villages and Mt Dhaulagiri and Nilgiri. If you’re lucky you might even spot the colorful Lophophorus (Danphe), the national bird of Nepal, as well as Himalayan Thar on the grassy ridge high above the trail.

We then stop by Bayali Kharka for lunch before we resume our trek to Dobato which is about 2 hours approx.

Dobato used to be a temporary settlement for nomads who come here to graze domestic animals. It has magnificent view of Mt. Fishtail , Mt. Annapurna South , Mt. Himchuli etc.

You’ll have an early breakfast in Dobato and then begin the climb to Muldai View Point for a magnificent panorama view at sunrise which is about 15 to 20 Minutes. From here, you’ll descend through open ground back to Dobato to have breakfast.

Enjoying great views of Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), Annapurna South, and the Himchuli peaks, we again descent through forests leaving Dobato back.

From here, you’ll continue on the trail downward through some dense rhododendron forests. This blossom is Nepal’s national flower and during spring months, when the trees are in full bloom, the forests turn into gardens of vibrant displays that look especially breathtaking against snow-capped mountains in the distance.

After trekking over a small pass, you’ll reach Tadapani where you’ll get to enjoy more of those excellent views. Many friendly Tibetans live in the village and they’ll likely be out and about selling trekkers items to take back home as souvenirs.

After breakfast we continue on the trail downwards through Baisi Kharka and into some rich forests. We also come cross some beautiful water fall and small rivers.

Once we come out of forest, we reach Ghandruk most comprised of several teahouses most “Gurung” Culture influenced. We have lunch in one of the beautiful teahouse at Gurung Cottage where you get one of the best “Dhalbhat”.

After lunch we drive to pokhara because most of trails are pitched all the way to Pokhara these days.

This is about 3 hours drive.

Annapurna Community trek

Annapurna community trek - view from Mohare Hill

The Annapurna Community trek gives you a unique introduction to village life in the mountains . You will meet people from the local communities in this beautiful, less traveled area of the Himalayas. The beautiful snowy peaks of the Annapurna`s are nearby. Consequently you will see some of the highest mountains in the world including the Machhapuchhre and the Dhaulagiri.

The highest point during your trekking is Mohare Hill . From an altitude of about 3300 meters you have a breathtaking view of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges . This view is undoubtedly one of the highlights of your trekking!

Because this part of the Annapurna area is less touristic and therefore more unspoiled , you will not encounter many other hikers during the Annapurna Community trek. However, you will meet the inhabitants of the villages, mostly farmers or yak shepherds. These locals will give you a warm welcome in their community. You will spend the night in community lodges and with local families .

All this makes this short trekking very suitable if you want an intense contact with the locals in combination with the white peaks of the Himalayas.

The path to Bas Kharka leads past several remote farms and you first climb up through the forest. Then you walk before entering Bas Kharka through orange groves.

You have enough time to visit this small Magar village. The Magars are an ethnic group.

There is a local school and a health post that you can visit. In autumn and winter you can enjoy a delicious orange from the orchards here!

You will spend the night in a community lodge or home stay in Bas Kharka.

Your hiking day starts today up through a forest to a small village. From here you have a nice view on the valley and you can get acquainted with the local lifestyle.

Afterwards you will hike to the village of Nangi, where you will spend the night today. Here again there's a lot to discover: see how the locals make paper from locally grown plants, visit the school, the herbalistry or some other local projects.

You will spend the night in a community lodge or homestay in Nangi.

Today is the longest hiking day of your trek. You climb up through beautiful, untouched forests, with breathtaking views of the mountains.

From the top of Mohare Hill you are surrounded by views of the Himalayas. Nearby you have a view of two giants: the Machhapuchhre (Fish Tail Mountain) and the Dhaulagiri.

You are in the middle of the beautiful nature. It is so green here, that you will undoubtedly also cross some yaks grazing in the green meadows.

You will spend the night in a community lodge or homestay in Mohare Hill.

Today is a short, but no less beautiful walking day. You follow the path on the mountain hill and have beautiful views in all directions where you look. Afterwards you descend through a forest until you reach Danda Karka.

This remote village seems far away from civilization. The mountains, on the other hand, seem so close here, that it feels exactly like you can touch them.

You spend the night in a community lodge or homestay in Mohare Hill.

What you walk up in the Himalayas, you go back down. So you walk further down today.

The landscape changes slowly as you descend to Tikot, a village with narrow streets and authentic houses.

Here you can enjoy a cultural performance with singing and dancing of the Magars. You can also visit the school here.

If you're staying with a family, you'll get a closer look at family life and village life.

You will spend the night in a community homestay in Tikot.

Today is unfortunately already the last day of the trekking.

From Tikot you descend via a steep path to Tiplyang, where you have a beautiful view on the wild Kali Ghandaki river below.

In Tiplyang a private car is waiting for you to take you to Pokhara. In Pokhara you are free to fill in the rest of the day.

You stay in a standard hotel in Pokhara.

The end of your journey is here. After an early breakfast the driver will pick you up at the reception of your hotel and drive you back to Kathmandu in a private car.

We follow the Prithvi highway (the only road between Pokhara and Kathmandu). On the way you will stop at least twice, of which you will have the opportunity to have lunch at one stop.

After arrival in Kathmandu you can explore the area on your own. If you want to enjoy the peace and quiet, pay a visit to the Garden of Dreams, a green oasis in the middle of Kathmandu.

Community Based Tourism: Support Community and Immerse in the life of locals

Community Based Tourism: Support Community and Immerse in the life of locals

Did you ever think one day you would like to change your lifestyle? There is numerous way we can try to go outside of our comfort area and escape from bustling crowds. Some people may think the opportunity to go stay in a luxury resort or a hotel. In Nepal staying at homestay and family owned teahouse is the best getaway to get the authentic local experience. You will get to discover new places, experience the real life of rural areas and contributing a bit back at the same time.

community trek nepal

Giving back when you travel is about leaving a positive influence in a destination through socially and environmentally conscious travel practices. It’s all about experiencing the culture, tradition, nature and great way to bring a positive impact on the environment and the local community. Providing the benefits through volunteerism, supporting the local community and traveling responsibly ensures your contribution to the economy will have a more direct and positive impact. This will indeed lead to a more memorable and meaningful travel experience.

community trek nepal

Nepal offers plenty of options when it comes to acquiring authentic local experiences and leaving a positive impact on the community while undertaking the adventure treks and tours. There are manifold ways that trekkers can support the community i.e purchasing their handicrafts, involved in different community service projects, trek to primeval hamlets, eating local food, and spend the night in family-owned and community-run tea-house lodge or home-stay. This will help the community to thrive by generating more employment and help to preserve and give publicity to culture and local cuisine and eventually support the sustainable development of trekking destinations.

With several trekkers now seeking off-the-beaten-path experiences, community-based tourism brings prospects for both social and economic growth in regions that are often marginalized and secluded. Community-based tourism has become a very significant and popular tendency among trekkers, specifically for those considering true experiences and cultural involvement in and amongst local communities.

CBT is a reciprocal way where tourism both provides local employment and income for education, development and conservation initiatives, while simultaneously giving both hosts and guests a unique opportunity for cultural exchange.

Family Owned Tea houses and Community Homestay

Community Tea house lodges and homestay along the off the beaten path destination in Nepal offers an extensive range of activities where visitors can engross themselves in the local life. The lodge was built and is owned by one of the families of diverse ethnic groups. There are several members of the local community who use their homes as teahouse lodge and homestays for trekkers.

community trek nepal

The main feature of homestay and local teahouse lodge is access to homemade food. One can savor the authentic essence of that place. Further guests are invited to join the villagers with rice planting, cooking, milking a cow, and the production of different handcrafted works. Most of the locals take pride to explain more about their everyday life and share their stories. This will be a unique opportunity to gain insight and bond with Nepalese people by contributing to and witnessing their everyday lives.

community trek nepal

Every trekker visiting the community or trekking routes help to build opportunities for local people to have alternative means of support and enhance their living standard. Teahouse lodges and homestay is perfect for trekkers who want to meet friendly people, go off the beaten path and explore a less visited, relatively untouched temple complex in a peaceful and tranquil setting.

Community-Based Tourism lead to women empowerment

community trek nepal

Apart from agriculture, some of the people living in isolated areas sustain their livelihood as trekking guides and porters. Whereas women care for the children and household chores while their husbands are out on the mountain.

community trek nepal

In addition, the CBT program has immensely helped in women empowerment. Women’s roles in the mountainous region are chiefly as an extension of home-maker and guest caretaker responsibilities. Additionally, they run lodges and tea shops either alone or with families along the main trekking routes. They play a vital role as a cook and server that help to connect with the trekkers and their trekking guides and porters. Likewise whenever they get the spare time they spent their day in hand made activities like knitting woolen caps, mittens, and socks, weaving bags, or making handicrafts to sell to trekkers.

community trek nepal

Even some women work as a guide and porter for trekking or mountaineering groups. Further, the women group initiated performing cultural dances for the visitor to raise fund to preserve the temples and monasteries.

community trek nepal

Besides the local community gets direct and indirect income generated from teahouse operations; sale of local products. Apart from income generation, they get the exposure to outside world, language, and perceptions; enriched awareness and get inspiration for proper sanitation and waste management; chances improved in education; pride in culture and increase the level of self-confidence that comes with networking with visitors and boost the socio-economic status of women.

Community Treks

The major component of the foundation is that we organise community rebuild & trekking trips to Nepal for educational institutions and other groups, to provide aid in areas aligned with the foundation's objectives.

REACH for Nepal's community rebuild trips are gaining popularity among adventure enthusiasts and educational institutions in Australia.

These trips offer a unique blend of trekking and community service, where participants can work on specific projects that are mutually agreed upon by the group and the foundation.

While school rebuilding, water tank installations, setting up hand wash stations or installing water filter systems are typical projects, REACH for Nepal welcomes any contribution that aligns with its objectives of helping those less fortunate than us in Nepal.

REACH for Nepal believes in empowering its volunteers to decide on the best way to contribute, rather than prescribing a set course of action.

This approach allows for greater flexibility and innovation in delivering aid to communities in need.

00000IMG_00000_BURST20190415131334605_COVER.jpg

Educational Institutions

Firstly, we tailor trips to for specific educational institutions as the youth of today are the leaders of tomorrow, and we recognise the great opportunity for students to broaden their horizons and experience the importance and joy of helping those in need.

99ae707e-b40b-4940-85dc-4c26e3d2e3ff.jpg

General Public

Secondly, we offer trips to the general public. Each year we invite the public to join us in a trek of moderate-intensity and participate in one of our projects.  For some participants, these trips are life-changing events, with a number of people coming back on later trips as they experience a deep sense of purpose and achievement.

Testimonials

The Canberra Grammar School trip to Nepal in April 2018 with the REACH for Nepal foundation was one of the best travel experiences I have been associated with as Head of the Outdoor Education Department at the school.

With representation both here in Australia and in Nepal, the organisation of the trip was very smooth and all aspects of travel were dealt with in a professional manner.  Having representatives here in Canberra made a big difference in terms of communication and planning resulting in a high level of confidence in the organisation of the trip.

...........The trip exceeded our expectations and I look forward to organising future expeditions through the REACH for Nepal foundation over coming years.
