Norway Cruise Highlights

Norwegian fjords.

Nature buffs and adventure seekers can’t miss seeing the stunning Norwegian fjords during their cruise. Bergen is a great jumping-off point to see fjords like Hardangerfjord, the country’s second-largest fjord. UNESCO World Heritage Site Geirangerfjord is known as the “crown jewel” of the country’s fjords, contrasting steep waterfalls with snow-peaked mountain caps. Go slightly off-the-beaten path to neighboring Hjørundfjord, where activities like fjord fishing and kayaking will captivate you.

Art & History

Explore Oslo’s famous Viking Ship Museum and see three expertly preserved vessels. Spend a while at the Munch Museum, dedicated to the painter Edvard Munch, known best for his painting “The Scream.” In Bergen, Bryggens Museum is a mighty testament to life in the town before a devastating fire in 1955, where excavations uncovered beautiful reminders of everyday Norwegian life. Bergen is also home to its own art museum that uniquely preserves the homes of famous composers throughout history. Time travel at Sunnmøre Museum in Alesund, an open-air exhibit featuring preserved homes and boats dating back to medieval times.

Craft Breweries

Norway’s distilleries and craft microbrewing scene is rapidly growing in cities like Bergen and Alesund. After decades of mostly serving lagers, microbrewers around the country wanted to offer more variety for beer drinkers, so they started to brew their own IPAs, pale ales, and stouts. Ever since, Norway’s cities have brewed hundreds of their own unique drafts. Unwind after a day’s hike and try something new on the menu.

Featured Ports

Bergen, norway.

Rows of deep red, burnt orange, and white houses near Bryggen Wharf is one of the top sights in the city. Enjoy a romantic wharfside meal or a cozy coffee there before you visit Bryggens Museum or St. Mary’s Church. Ride a funicular rail to the summit of Mt. Fløyen for incredible panoramic views of the city below. Explore the surrounding fjords on an unforgettable kayaking or hiking adventure.

Alesund, Norway

On a Norway cruise, you’ll visit the picturesque town of Alesund, frequently cited as one of the country’s most beautiful places to visit. Spend a leisurely day exploring the Art Nouveau District. Hike up nearly 500 steps to Aksla Viewpoint and admire the stunning vistas of the archipelago and breathtaking fjords beyond. The town is also the gateway to Geirangerfjord, one of Norway’s most famous natural wonders and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, nestled between imposing cliffs on all sides.

Oslo, Norway

Let Oslo’s metropolitan atmosphere energize you as you explore its opulent palaces and incredible museums. The capital of Norway is teeming with Viking history, from ships dating back to the 9th century at the Viking Museum to 17th-century art at the National Museum. Art lovers won’t want to miss seeing Edvard Munch’s “The Scream” in person. When you move on from historic wonders, grab a craft beer or sample local salmon at any of Oslo’s trendy eateries.

Norway Cruise Itineraries

Embark on an unforgettable cruise to Norway aboard Celebrity Silhouette or Celebrity Reflection. Sailing from May to August, our Norwegian fjord cruises last anywhere from seven nights to nine nights. Longer itineraries give you the chance to see towns like the mountainous Flam or the remote Geiranger. Explore the most amazing nordic treasures with a norwegian fjords cruise.

The Norwegian Fjords are undoubtedly among the most beautiful natural landscapes in the world, capable of inspiring awe with their majestic beauty and timeless atmosphere. Norway has over a thousand Fjords, Geirangerfjord and the Naerøyfjord being the largest. Since 2005, they have featured in the list of UNESCO heritage sites – and they’re now accessible on an exclusive MSC Norwegian Fjords cruise.   The Norway Fjords cruise is one of the best ways to visit these earthly and imposing spectacles thanks to the deep water surrounding them, which is both smooth and easy to navigate. During the Norwegian Fjords cruise 2024 - 2025 seasons, you can admire these imposing examples of natural beauty first-hand and from the best possible vantage point.   Via the Fjord waters, it is possible to reach some of Norway’s most beautiful cities, including Bergen. Far-off the beaten path, Bergen is surrounded by the Sognefjord, the second longest Fjord in the world which extends for 204 km.   For our adventurous guests, the natural landscape surrounding the Fjords, with all their wild and untouched features, are nevertheless easy to explore. On a cruise to Iceland, unveil Grundarfjordur’s heroic past. Climb the "Holy Mountain," which once housed a temple dedicated to Thor. Tour the 4,000-year old lava fields of Berserkergata, and live through the stories of Iceland’s sagas — tales of migration, war, religion and mythology. Or visit Old Stavanger during your Norway cruise, and enjoy an architectural tour through Europe’s largest collection of wooden buildings.

As one of the best places to see the Northern Lights, Tromsø is teeming with wonders from the skies above to the fjords below. On a Norway cruise, learn about the city’s history of Arctic hunting at the Polar Museum. Visit the Husky Wilderness Camp to meet championship dogs and hear about their racing careers. Or ride a cable car to the peak of Mt. Storsteinen for sweeping views of the city.

Why Cruise Norway & Iceland

The majestic beauty and natural phenomena of Northern Europe offers an adventure like no other.

Natural splendors

Natural splendors abound in Norway and Iceland. In Grundarfjördur, marvel at the seascapes, fjords and tidal currents within Breidafjordur Bay. Rejuvenate in the mineral-rich waters of the Blue Lagoon in Reykjavik. Or fly over Godafoss Waterfall, the ‘Waterfall of the Gods,’ during a flightseeing tour in Akureyri. Come face-to-face with Mother Nature’s crown jewels — only on an Norway and Iceland cruise with Princess.

The search for phenomena

Travel to Alta, the "City of the Northern Lights," for a chance to see the sky painted lime green. Cruise to Iceland in June and bask in 24 hours of daylight during the summer solstice. Or visit Honningsvag for a glimpse of the Midnight Sun during your evening departure. While we can’t guarantee you’ll see these natural phenomena, we can promise that the journey is just as exciting as the wonders themselves.

Norway & Iceland excursions

Our award-winning Norway and Iceland cruise shore excursions bring you to natural wonders, wildlife and landmarks. Relax in Reykjavik’s Blue Lagoon while gazing at snowy landscapes. Get up close to Akureyri’s 35-foot waterfall that tumbles into the Skjálfandafljót River below. Or travel to the Bjarnarhöfn Shark Farm in Grundarfjordur to learn how to make hákarl, a 400-year old Icelandic delicacy.

More ashore

Enjoy even more marvels and mysteries with More Ashore late-night departures and overnight stays. On a Norway cruise to Alta, search for the Aurora Borealis at midnight with a cup of hot chocolate in hand. Attend a summer concert at Tromsø’s Arctic Cathedral to welcome the return of the Midnight Sun. Or enjoy a 9-hour journey through Reykjavik’s landscapes on itineraries that depart later in the evening.

Nature meets human engineering at norway’s hardangerfjord.

The Hardanger Bridge is the longest suspension bridge in Norway.

The remote nature of Norway's fjords has long posed challenges for transportation and connectivity, making everyday life in these areas a challenge. Over time, advancements in engineering have led to innovative solutions that bridge these gaps.

Modern bridges, once thought impossible due to the harsh and varied terrain, now link previously disconnected regions, facilitating easier travel. These engineering achievements enhance daily living but also, in many cases, demonstrate how it’s possible to balance human needs and the natural environment.

Whether you’re on a sailboat or a small cruise ship, sailing along Norway’s Hardangerfjord offers a stunning view of archetypal Norwegian fjord landscape and brings one of Norway’s most notable engineering projects into view.

The Mighty Hardanger Bridge

As you navigate through this picturesque setting, an enormous bridge gradually looms closer. This is the Hardanger Bridge, an impressive structure that integrates beautifully with the natural landscape.

Far from being an eyesore, the bridge is an icon of modern engineering, designed with tunnels at both ends to blend with its surroundings and minimize the disruption to nature. There are even lanes for cyclists and pedestrians.

Exactly When Apple Will Launch iPhone 16 And iPhone 16 Pro

Apple warns millions of iphone users—stop using google chrome, amazon prime day 2024 is over, but there are still some great deals.

Sailing underneath the Hardanger Bridge in Norway.

With just two supports, one on either side of the fjord, the bridge’s main span is one of the longest suspension bridge spans in the world. In fact, its main span is slightly longer than Golden Gate Bridge, although the San Francisco bridge is twice as long in overall length.

The Hardanger Bridge was constructed to improve connectivity between the regions. It has reduced travel time between Oslo and Bergen, making the journey more efficient for commuters and travelers alike.

It has, however, made travel more expensive with a toll payable on the bridge for the foreseeable future. Most cars will pay approximately $13 to cross the bridge, although this fee is reduced for those with an AutoPass contract to approximately $10, and further still for drivers of electric cars to approximately $7.

Since its opening in 2013, the bridge has also reduced the number of cruise ships able to call at ports such as Ulvik and Eidfjord that lie on the inner Hardangerfjord, east of the bridge.

Vøringsfossen: A More Controversial Design

While the Hardanger Bridge has been heralded as a positive piece of engineering, not all projects in the immediate area have been so well received.

The famous waterfall Vøringsfossen is a short drive from the Hardangerfjord in Norway.

Near the bridge, the charming small town Eidfjord is a great base from which to explore the Hardanger and Hardangerfjord region. A short drive from Eidfjord brings you to the striking waterfall Vøringsfossen, one of the fjord region’s most famous sights.

Known for its dramatic 600-foot drop and powerful flow, Vøringsfossen waterfall has captivated tourists and artists for many years. Composer Edvard Grieg was one of many famous Norwegians to visit the site regularly throughout their lives.

The waterfall is part of the Hardangervidda national scenic route , one of 18 designated roads in Norway that have benefited from substantial investment over the past decade.

The program’s funding is well-known for having instigated architecturally interesting rest areas and other facilities that blend well with nature. However, a recent addition at Vøringsfossen has stirred much controversy due to its modern design in a historic natural setting.

The controversial footbridge at Vøringsfossen waterfall in Norway.

The idea of the new bridge was a simple one: to bridge the gorge between the two visitor areas, giving visitors a chance to experience the views from both sides without having to drive between them.

“A circus in the mountains” is how the Norwegian author, photographer and mountain climber Stein P. Aasheim described the staircase bridge designed by architect Carl-Viggo Hølmebakk. Aasheim went on to claim it was the “worst maltreatment ever” of an iconic natural site in Norway.

Global media were generally more positive. CNN referred to the “eyecatching, floating-on-air design” while Lonely Planet said the construction “represents a long tradition of exploring the fields between architecture, technology, infrastructure and nature.”

Regardless of personal views on the architecture, the engineering achievement has to be admired. Helicopters and mountain climbers were involved in the five-year-long construction project, which could only take place during the summers due to the weather in the Norwegian mountains.

At the 2020 opening, Hølmebakk said the bridge will always come second to nature: “The architecture is not the main part, but the beautiful nature, and the waterfall.”
