Eighty percent of the staterooms aboard the Carnival Pride provide ocean views, which is more than what the majority of the fleet's other ships offer. While those on a budget can opt for Interior staterooms, Balcony, Ocean View and Suite category cabins offer more space and scenery. The ship holds 2,134 passengers at single occupancy,  2,680 passengers at double occupancy and 930 crew members.

Either way, much of your time will likely be spent outside of your cabin, thanks to Carnival Pride's myriad of onboard activities. Cool off in one of the pools, splash around in the water park or tackle the 214-foot-long waterslide. Kids can head to age-appropriate youth clubs while adults grab a cocktail at one of multiple bars. At night, passengers can attend comedy shows and musicals or enjoy the nightclub and piano bar.

What's more, a renovation in 2014 equipped Pride with "Fun Ship 2.0" dining, including the popular Guy's Burger Joint and the specialty Bonsai Sushi eatery, plus amenities like Family Feud Live and the Alchemy Bar. An even more recent refurbishment in February 2019 freshened the ship's public areas, renovated the arcade and more.

Carnival Pride departs from Baltimore for sailings in the Caribbean, the Bahamas, Bermuda, Canada, Greenland and the Panama Canal.

Carnival Pride Review and My First Impressions

We didn't need the retractable glass dome except for one rainy day in Belize.

This site contains affiliate links for which we may be compensated.

Note:  Carnival Pride underwent a short dry dock in February 2019. The chapel was removed and a Michael’s Craft Center took its place. Everything else is the same – dining, activities, pool etc.

Three reasons why I chose the Carnival Pride.

1. the appeal of a tampa departure..

Tampa’s cruise passenger demographic during the winter (except for school holidays) tends to attract an older, retired crowd from the surrounding area as well as snowbirds from the Midwest. I had a lot of work to do and would welcome a slower paced week.

2. A $75 million Funship 2.0 makeover.

It had been years since I was on the Carnival Pride so it was time for a Carnival Pride review. There’s new carpeting and stateroom upgrades, the addition of Guy’s Burger Joint, the BlueIguana Cantina, RedFrog Pub and BlueIguana Rum Bar. The George Lopez Comedy Club was added as well as one of my favorite new Carnival concepts, the Taste Bar.

3.   The Annual Cayman Cookout .

The Carnival Pride my first choice between two cruises from Florida that would arrive in Grand Cayman on the exact day of an international culinary event that I wanted to attend.

Port of Tampa Embarkation

If you haven’t cruised from the port of Tampa , you should try it. The adjacent car parking structure is a breeze.

Cruising from the small Port of Tampa is easy, quick and convenient.

Many hotels in the area, Hampton Inn, Holiday Inn Express, Marriott Courtyard and more, offer a pre-cruise hotel package that includes breakfast, free parking during your cruise, and a shuttle to/from the port. I stayed at the Marriott Courtyard Westshore and I’d gladly stay there again.

Boarding the Carnival Pride, from shuttle drop-off at the port at noon to walking into my room took less than 25 minutes. I dreaded a mid-day boarding but Carnival had plenty of staff to facilitate the rush, which actually seemed to be closer to 2pm.

Our Itinerary

For a 7-night cruise, we covered four ports; Costa Maya , Belize, Mahogany Bay (an island off the coast of Honduras) and Grand Cayman. All ports were in the same vicinity along the coast of Mexico and Central America and then over to Grand Cayman, with sea days as bookends to the itinerary.

First Impressions

From the moment I stepped aboard, there was no mistaking I was on a Carnival ship. Guests are greeted with a rainbow of vivid colors, a red-glass-roofed atrium with brass-trimmed glass elevators and a huge semi-circular bar. There’s a DJ getting the sailaway party started and people are dancing even before the ship leaves port.

Rainbow-hued atrium with two glass elevators. Fun to ride up and down and watch the people below.

The themed dècor is kind of Renaissance meets ancient Greece and Rome. Whether along the hallways or adorning the pools and spa, there are reminders and replicas of Mediterranean paintings and statues. Unusual and very interesting, contemporary glassworks are encased in the corners of each stairwell. Worth the time to look at them, even though the artists’ names are not listed.

My balcony stateroom looked very familiar. The Carnival Pride (built in 2002) is one four Carnival’s Spirit Class ships on which I’ve sailed many times. From the peach and orange stateroom interior color and aqua bathroom countertop to the desktop and closet space, it’s all the same on all the Spirit Class ships.

Here's my standard balcony stateroom. Lots of desktop space, plus a fridge and safe.

On the balcony, one chair was fixed upright and the other could recline. A small table made it easy to enjoy a room service coffee in the morning and a glass of wine and snacks before dinner.

Nice sized balcony and one of the chairs has a reclining back.

The bathroom had ample space and the shower sported a new shower-head and curtain. Plenty of storage for two people.

Ample countertop and shelf space in this bathroom. Love the magnifying mirror.

There’s the adults-only Serenity pool and relaxation area with plenty of hammocks, padded loungers and sitting areas. A midship pool with a retractable roof was handy on our rainy day in Belize. Over at Carnival Waterworks water park, I didn’t try either of the awesome twisty water slides. At night along the pool deck is the large screen Seaside Theatre featuring themed movie nights. Soft ice cream and yogurt are available around the clock, located at two stations near the pool.

Here's what the retractable dome looks like fully-closed.

Food and Dining

It’s the same Lido food buffet that I’ve seen a zillion times, yet it still takes me a couple of days to get my bearings. There is always a choice of crispy-crust pizzas and on-request Caesar salad.

My first lunch on a Carnival ship is at Guy's Burger Joint. With or without the meat.

Outdoors at lunch time around the Lido pool is Guy’s Burger Joint, open until 6-6:30pm. BlueIguana Cantina Tacos and Burritos offers a pick-out-what-you-want filling and an excellent toppings bar, complete with nearly two dozen hot sauces to choose.

My favorite Carnival dining venue is Bonsai Sushi and I ate there three of the seven nights. Reasonably priced, the sushi and sashimi are amazingly fresh, beautifully yet simply presented and larger-than-usual portions. Depending upon what I selected, my dinners ranged from $10 to $14 dollars. This included a small salad, sushi dish, a sampler bite, hot green tea and dessert. Best value around.

Bonsai Sushi. So good I went there three times. That's the shrimp tempura roll.

In the evenings, the Lido Buffet offered almost all of the same options as the Normandie main dining room. A nice break if you want “dining room food” in a casual atmosphere. There’s also 24/7 room service. On the last formal night, I dined at David’s, a reservations-requested upscale (and very good) steakhouse. The fee was $35 per person.

But as I always do on cruises, I tagged my door handle with my breakfast request before I went to bed. Out of courtesy (and convenience for me) before I went to sleep, I set out a couple of dollars on the table so that when my breakfast was delivered I didn’t have to fumble for a gratuity for the room service person.

Entertainment

There’s plenty to do in the evenings. On a couple of nights, I walked through but didn’t stop in the casino; it was a bit too smoky-smelling (though not smoke-filled) for me. Instead, I headed down to deck one to the George Lopez Comedy Club to listen to a hilarious comedienne from Minnesota. Several other male comedians rotated performances throughout the cruise, with evening and late night adults-only shows.

Formal night in the Atrium.

Playlist Productions stages four full-blown theatrical shows, with flashy but not risqué costumes. One night the show was “80’s Pop to the Max,” another was a Motown-style revue called, “Heart of Soul.” Two more new shows plus a variety of entertainers on the non-Playlist nights filled the Taj Mahal Theater.

Carnival has a partnership with Hasbro, so families are entertained with Hasbro the Game Show on several occasions. I stuck to the dazzling Playlist Productions plus a couple of the comedy shows and enjoyed all of them.

Smaller than some of the newer Carnival ships, the Pride offers a relaxing week-long cruise. With four consecutive port days flanked by two sea days, there’s a lot to do on land and plenty of shore excursion choices. For me, staying on board for half of the day in Belize while the ship emptied out, added to my relaxation.

I never heard anyone hawking a “Gold by the Inch” sale, although there were two lunchtime announcements for art auctions. I wasn’t approached to buy $10 drinks in souvenir glasses or pushy photographers. It seemed like onboard sales pitches had been downplayed and the once-intrusive marketing was nearly non-existent.

Going with my assumption that Tampa departures equate to older guests and this wasn’t a school holiday week, I didn’t notice many teenagers. A few families with infants may have taken part in Seuss at Sea (as in Dr. Seuss) activities and themed Seuss character breakfasts ($). Of course, the passenger mix will vary from sailing to sailing especially during holidays.

Carnival has done much to improve their image over the last year or so. From better personalized service and upgraded food quality (except for the packaged yogurt!) to diverse dining venues and less raucous energy.

The Carnival Pride is but one example of how this cruise line is working hard to overcome a few rough bouts of negative publicity. With insightful, new leadership at the helm, exciting new ships on the horizon and an overall drastic improvement, I’d cruise again on Carnival without hesitation.

Disclosure:  In the spirit of full-disclosure, I was a guest of Carnival Cruise Line aboard the Carnival Pride. My goal is to present the facts as unbiased as possible. However, all opinions, statements and sentiments given are my own. If I don’t like something, it doesn’t mean that others won’t enjoy it. And just because I’m crazy about something, doesn’t guarantee others will like it.

Hi Pat, Thank you for your questions. Yes, the Carnival Pride was in drydock in mid-February. All that was done was to remove the chapel and put in a Michael’s Craft Center. Other than that, to the best of my knowledge, there weren’t any other major changes. Except of course, like you said, now the ship sails from Baltimore! I really like Carnival’s older ships, too. The Pride only has slightly over 2,100 which for me, is a decent size…and “small” these days.

Have a wonderful cruise! Sherry

Can we get a 2019 update in The Pride that now leaves out if Baltimore, MD? Hasn’t it been in dry dock? Has it been renovated? Updated?

Hi Rob, Thanks for your upbeat comment! Enjoy your next Carnival Pride cruise. Sherry

Being from PA, The Carnival Pride departing from Baltimore is good as it gets for me and my Family We Enjoy every moment and its a great ship…4th time Cruising on the Pride..

First cruise ship I was on and probably the last, too many kids and I didn’t think the service was very good.Had to wait too long for drinks ,15 minutes to get a Coke that sucks.Sorry but for what it costs me and my wife were very dissatisfied.

Went on the ride in Feb of 2015 so far my favorite carnival ship ive been on

Hi Carol, Remember…the longer the cruise, the older the demographic. And Tampa seems to attract an older passenger, too. I went on quite a few Carnival cruises in the last two years and I have not been disappointed and enjoyed all of them.

Interesting! Have not cruised on Carnival for 20 years, but may try it again.

Carnival Pride

About Carnival Pride

Greatly enhanced in 2014 with a multi-million-dollar upgrade to offer "Fun Ship 2.0" features, the 88,500-ton, 2,680-guest Carnival Pride now boasts a variety of exciting new dining, bar and entertainment choices. The popular Spirit Class ship offers something for all age groups. Cruise in a delightful atmosphere with paintings and sculptures, plus reproductions of famous works of art. She boasts teak decks and a stunning 11-deck-high Atrium that is crowned by a glass ceiling.

Delightful amenities and activities will keep everyone in the family happy and busy. Catch some rays at the four swimming pools and luxuriate in the four whirlpools. Indulge in one of the many treatments at the large spa and keep ship-shape at the state-of-the-art fitness center.

Supervised youth activities are offered for kids in three different age groups at their "summer camp at sea," while teens have their own area, plus a video arcade.

Relax with your favorite drink at nearly 20 fun bars and lounges and escape to the adults-only area that is a peaceful retreat. Thrill seekers will love the 214-foot-long twister water slide at the large water park. Get some retail therapy at the shops where you can find duty-free items. Romance awaits at the onboard wedding chapel, where you can say "I do" or renew your vows. Play some mini-golf and basketball or go for a jog.

The upgraded ship now lets you savor delicious just-made burritos, tacos and tortillas at a Mexican restaurant, delight your palates at a full-service sushi eatery with Asian-inspired favorites and bite into a handcrafted burger along with fries at a poolside eatery. Relax at several bars with a variety of themes, such as Caribbean rums, another that is Mexican that serves frozen drinks and one where mixologists prepare your made-to-order cocktails.

The palate-pleasing dining options are sure to make everyone in the family happy. Twin two-level main dining rooms feature superb international cuisine, including healthy spa fare options and delicious vegetarian selections, plus a Kids Menu with all their favorites. A special multi-course gourmet dinner is always a hit with foodies and includes a special galley tour. Intimate dining is offered at the romantic supper club. Casual eateries include buffets with selections from all around the world, an elegant steakhouse, a 24-hour pizzeria, rotisserie, Asian, a grille, sushi bar, a New York-style deli and bins of sweet treats are featured at the candy store. Complimentary room service is also available 24/7.

Retreat to a wide variety of stunning accommodations, with a high percentage of oceanview staterooms and those with private balconies, while many have floor-to-ceiling windows. Some were designed for families and all feature an interactive TV where you can watch first-run movies, ultra-comfortable beds, a mini-fridge, plus much more.

Nighttime entertainment is exciting and fun. You can play the many games and slots at the casino — one of the largest at sea, enjoy the laughs at the comedy club or watch exciting cabaret shows and Las Vegas-style performances. Kick up your heels all night at the disco. Join a sing-along at the piano bar and relax to the sounds of the jazz trio and much more.

Experience a cruise vacation on the incredible Carnival Pride for an unforgettable fun time!

Bonsai Sushi

Bonsai Sushi

So maybe you’ve had sushi on a cruise before, but you’ve never had it like Bonsai Sushi, our onboard seafood-and-soy-sauce spot. Dine amidst expertly-pruned bonsai trees while enjoying sit-down service and an affordable menu of delectable sushi and sashimi… plus rolls, soups, sides, sakes and desserts. So the next time you’re taking an onboard stroll, stop at Bonsai Sushi for a little something satisfying.

Pizza

Tossing dough is an age-old art passed down the generations. Lucky for you, someone passed us the secret to the perfect pie. While aboard, this is the place that will shiver your timbers and warm you to the bone, 24 hours a day, with a Margherita, Funghi, Prosciutto, Pepperoni or Quatttro Formaggi pizza served with a delicious Caesar salad. Savvy? Then it’s the pirates’ life for you!

Deli

Looking for a little taste from the old neighborhood? Pile 'em high at the Carnival Deli. Enjoy old time favorites like a hot pastrami on rye, grilled Reuben, or roasted turkey breast on a country roll. Our sandwiches and wraps are always hand-carved and served fresh with cole slaw or relish. Come by, satisfy your craving for a great sandwich and make sure you don’t forget the kosher dill.

Chef's choice

Chef's choice

Get a taste of the world as the chef throws the spotlight on a variety of dishes from a different country each day. Enjoy shrimp quesadillas and tortilla soup from Mexico, braised beef bordelaise plus potato and leek soup from France, jerk chicken and Jamaican pepper stew from the Caribbean, or Manhattan clam chowder and southern fried chicken from the good ol’ USA. Indulge in the foods that make each place famous… and be sure to make this a delicious daily routine.

Blue Iguana Cantina

Blue Iguana Cantina

Nobody knows Mexican dining like a blue iguana. Well, our blue iguana, at least. That’s why it should come as no surprise that the BlueIguana Cantina features freshly made tacos and burritos stuffed specially for your enjoyment. Throw our homemade tortillas and salsa into the mix, and you have a casual dining experience that will make you say “mmmm” (which is actually Iguanese for “more, please”).

Guys Burger Joint

Guys Burger Joint

We went looking for someone to help us grill up the best burgers at sea, and we found just the guy. Carnival has teamed up with best-selling author, restaurateur and Food Network personality Guy Fieri to bring all the authentic appeal of a roadside burger shack to Guy’s Burger Joint, the cool poolside spot for hot burgers and hand-cut fries. Try a fresh-off-the-grill burger Guy’s way, or take it off-road to our toppings bar and truly make it your own.

Sometimes you just need to get away… from all that vacation. We know — sitting at home, it’s hard to imagine that, but trust us — it’s really, really nice to have a place to unwind from the day’s excitement. Escape to a world designed, from the ground up, for relaxation. Cloud 9 Spa™ staff are masters (or, maybe more like artists) trained in the craft of simply helping you chill. What’s their secret? Massages, facials, body wraps, thermal suites and more — plus, on certain ships, the amazing Hydrotherapy Pool — these are the tools of the trade. And the trade is ultimate relaxation.

Reserve your session and your journey begins. We’ll lead you to the best photo spots on the ship, in our onboard photo studio… or even ashore in some picturesque destinations. You’ll end up with amazing prints or high-quality digital files, and don’t forget to check out our photo packages, custom photobooks, collages and large prints.

Red Frog Pub

Get into an island state of mind before you even set foot on one. RedFrog Pub is our laid-back, no-worries, oh-so-lively Key West-inspired pub. Sample Caribbean fare, dominate at the foosball table, enjoy some sweet tunes from live musicians and sip our tasty signature private-label brew, ThirstyFrog Red. So kick back and feel the island vibe come to life. You’ll be a local here before you know it.

Cherry On Top

Cherry On Top

A cruise is the perfect time to treat yourself to something sweet, and Cherry On Top happens to be the perfect place. You'll find this well-stocked candy-and-more-store not only great for enjoying some of your confectionery favorites, but the place to pick up food and apparel gifts for that special someone, even if — admit it — that someone happens to be you!

Serenity

Fresh, tasty, fast and colorful — all the qualities that make the Salad Bar a great place for lunch or dinner. Stock up on your nutrients for the day and top them off with dressings galore at this self-serve veggie-lover’s paradise. Just because it’s good for you doesn’t mean building your own can’t be fun. Mix in some grilled chicken, fresh tuna or stick to the basics with this quick and healthy option.

Blueiguana Tequila bar

Blueiguana Tequila bar

BlueIguana Tequila Bar is the onboard spot to chill and enjoy a slushy tequila drink or an ice-cold Mexican cerveza. The menu offers up Mexican favorites, including several brands of tequila and a slew of Mexican brews. There’s a lineup of frozen concoctions, cocktails and margaritas served by the glass or by the pitcher, and even a special Mexican beer cocktail (yes, really). Where can you find this little slice of Mexican paradise? Next to the pool, of course. So stay cool and take in the bar’s vacation vibe while you kick back on your cruise – that’s what official bar mascot Blue the Iguana would tell you.

Red Frog Rum Bar

Red Frog Rum Bar

Guests have told us we hit on something special with the cool Caribbean chill of the RedFrog Pub. We've taken the best parts and brought them poolside with the RedFrog Rum Bar, where the frog keeps the fun hopping day and night with all the island flava you know and love. Join the party at this poolside bar featuring a great selection of frog-approved Caribbean rum-based concoctions available by the glass or pitcher, plus plenty of Carnival’s signature private-label draft beer, ThirstyFrog Red.

beauty salon

beauty salon

A trip to the salon is an opportunity to relax, to chat with others, to focus on yourself. It’s about more than just getting your hair or nails done… but it’s definitely about getting your hair or nails done! Even though you’re on vacation, you won’t have to settle for anything less than the salon style you’re used to back on land. And these good looks go beyond the usual — we even offer services like teeth whitening… great for taking those ‘I’m on vacation and I’m looking great!’ smiles to the next level.

Sauna

On a Carnival cruise, the vast and beautiful sea is all around you. You can do all the looking you want from the ship, but sorry — no touching allowed. (We’re sure you’ll understand.) That’s what the thalassotherapy pool at the onboard Cloud 9 Spa is for! Get your sea-water fix and soak completely in it, easily absorbing all the relaxing, rejuvenating benefits of the trace elements and vitamins you’ll find in nature. Oh, and here’s one thing you’ll only find in our special pool: water jets that massage and invigorate. Mother Nature’s great, but she can’t do that.

Fitness center

Decks: 9 Lido 10 Sun

We have some bad news for you — your ship has a gym. In other words, there’s no excuse for leaving your fitness routine back on land. That’s great news, however, for your body, which will definitely benefit from all the extra energy that vacationing pumps directly into you. And let’s not forget the extra time you’ll have, since you won’t be waking up and spending most of the day at the office or anything like that. If those were some of your go-to excuses, we’re sorry, but we all know this is important. Why not treat yourself to some of our fitness classes — you might even have a little fun while you do something great for yourself!

Fitness Studio

Fitness Studio

You can have all the will in the world, a great attitude that keeps you working hard at the gym, but still not see the results you’re hoping for. If that’s the case — or you’re just looking to shake things up with a little extra fun or challenge in your workout — check out Carnival’s selection of onboard fitness classes. Whether it’s yoga, pilates, indoor cycling or boot camp, there’s a fitness class that’ll get you the workout you need, and the instruction you need to do it right. Looking for a little extra attention? Look to personal training for a workout with that personal touch.

Jogging Track

Jogging Track

Jogging may not immediately come to mind when you think of things to do at sea, but it probably should. You don’t have to walk on water, you just have to get on a Carnival cruise. After all, if you’re going to jog, you’d be hard-pressed to find a place to do it with a more scenic view, or a more refreshing breeze — both of these are available in abundance when you go for an open-air jog on the upper-deck. Jogging tracks are available on all Carnival ships, and are even padded for long-distance comfort.

Mini golf

Ah, imagine a perfect day out on the links, the golfer's zen of the ball, the hole and nothing in between but well-manicured fairway... plus one cactus, a treasure chest... and wait, is that a windmill in the way? Just who designed this course anyway? Whoever it was, they had one thing in mind — maximum fun for mini-golfers, big and small! That's precisely why you'll find a course on every Carnival ship, where you can hit the holes and take in everything you’d expect, like the sights and the sounds... plus the seagulls.

Get to Know Carnival Pride

Carnival Pride charms, alright — it's a treat for your eyes, your taste buds... and of course, your fun buds. Invite them all to come enjoy the vacation that this ship is proud to offer. Carnival Pride invites you to dine refined, from the zen-like simplicity of Bonsai Sushi ™ to the art deco ocean liner inspiration of the Normandie Restaurant, to the American-Traditional style of Fahrenheit 555 Steakhouse. And of course there's real, delectable substance under all that style. But for something a little more casual, loosen your tie... or maybe just throw it away and grab a main course (and fries) from our main man Guy Fieri, at Guy's Burger Joint ™ . The Mexican heat's optional at BlueIguana Cantina ™ , but make your next stop Cherry on Top ™ — our candy-and-more store — where everything's sweet. And to raise a glass to important sacrifices of the past, Heroes Tribute Bar makes remembrance its primary objective. You'll find yourself with room to move at the Beauties Dance Club, and a hard time sitting still at Playlist Productions ™ . All around this cruise ship you'll discover even more ways to stay cool, like an adult-only pool at Serenity, a fun-only midship pool featuring a retractable roof, plus Carnival Pride's splashy onboard waterpark, Carnival WaterWorks ™ . And if all the waterslide action leaves you needing a little extra unwinding, we recommend you dry off and head to the Cloud 9 Spa ™ . Alongside the pool is the big-screen, big-fun Carnival Seaside Theater ™ , while Seuss at Sea ™ is a good time for kids who love a good rhyme too. (Like we do!) Camp Ocean ® , Circle "C" ® and Club O2 ® prove that we've got spots for cool kids of all ages.
