Landmannalaugar lies in the heart of the Southern Highlands of Iceland and is a mecca for hikers. As part of the Fjallabak Nature Reserve just north of the Ring Road, this territory is known for its colourful rhyolite mountains, an extensive network of hiking trails, and natural hot spring activity. In fact, Landmannalaugar means “the people’s pools” in Icelandic, thanks to a large number of geothermal hot springs and hot pots in the area. There are plenty of tours and excursions in Landmannalaugar for nature lovers and adventurers alike.

This breathtaking zone rests at the edge of the Laugahraun lava field, which was created during a volcanic event nearly 550 years ago. The colourful mountains and gorgeous scenery combined with a plethora of outdoor activities make a Landmannalaugar hike or Super Jeep excursion  a must-do on any trip to Iceland. Whether exploring Landmannalaugar by bus, staying in mountain huts along the trails or simply taking a day trip from Reykjavik, there’s something for everyone here.

Tours and Activities in Landmannalaugar, Iceland

Landmannalaugar tour options change according to the season as the Highlands are not fully accessible all year round. The roads in this part of the country are F-roads (mountain roads), so you need a 4WD vehicle to access them when they open up for the summer tourist season. You’ll either need to rent a 4x4 vehicle of your own or go with an official tour operator.

The main road leading to Landmannalaugar is F208 if you plan on making the drive yourself. There are plenty of Icelandic tour packages to choose from if you prefer to leave the planning and logistics up to someone else. Summer tours include Landmannalaugar by bus from Reykjavik , Hella , and Leirubakki . There’s also Landmannalaugar by Jeep and Super Jeep tours of Thórsmörk .

Winter tours offer a different side of the region, with the glaciers and glacial rivers of Thórsmörk Valley on full display. Depending on Landmannalaugar’s weather, you might be able to take a small detour to the beautiful waterfall of the striking Stakkholtsgja Canyon. There are also special tours to nearby sights like Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, the secret ice cave, and horseback riding . Whatever time of year you choose for Iceland travel, it will no doubt be an enchanting voyage.

Landmannalaugar Tours and Excursions

Some of the most popular tours and excursions in the area are the Landmannalaugar Jeep tour, the Northern Lights Tour from Reykjavik, and the Thórsmörk tour. These three very different options give you the chance to discover the diverse parts of Iceland’s interior.

A Super Jeep tour of Iceland sees you traverse the country’s rugged and often snowy terrain. You’ll travel with a trained, experienced guide who will show you the different types of territory in the region. Crossing rivers and valleys or driving past windswept mountains and rolling hills will no doubt be a highlight of your Iceland vacation.

The Northern Lights  are Mother Nature’s magical nighttime light show in the sky. See the dazzling waves of emerald and violet undulating high above. An Aurora Borealis hunt will take you in search of the natural phenomenon unique to the most extreme ends of our planet.

Thórsmörk is a stunning valley in Landmannalaguar named after the Norse god Thor. Be sure to bring your camera on this five-hour adventure packed with glaciers, volcanoes, and other out of this world scenery. And of course, be prepared to do some light hiking. This area is a top destination for hikers who come to Iceland thanks to the large number of trails and diverse landscape.

Day Trips from Reykjavik

Taking a day trip from Reykjavik is a wonderful way to explore Landmannalaugar by bus. For travelers who only have one or two days to enjoy the charms of this region, a Landmannalaugar day tour is the perfect choice. The bus departs Reykjavik early in the morning and makes stops at Hveragerði, Selfoss, Hella, Leirubakki, Rjúpnavellir and Landmannalaugar. After arriving around noon, you’ve got six hours to hike, explore, and bathe in geothermal pools.

You’ll have the option to head back to Reykjavik that evening or stay at one of the area’s mountain huts. If you choose to spend the night, you'll need to arrange your accommodation separately. Taking a Landmannalaugar tour from Reykjavik is a wonderful way to visit the Icelandic Highlands even if you don’t have your own rental car.

Hiking and Trekking in the Icelandic Highlands

Hiking and taking a dip in Landmannalaugar hot springs are another favourite pastime of visitors to the area. With mountain huts and hiking trails abound, this is a great zone for grabbing your backpack, hiking boots, and hiking pole and hitting the paths if you want to take a Landmannalaugar Hike . Looking at a Landmannalaugar trek map, you’ll see that it’s the starting point of the northern end of the Laugavegur Trail. The rhyolite mountains, multicoloured volcanic scenery and a wide variety of landscapes make the Laugavegur hiking trail Iceland’s most popular. From crackling black lava fields to colourful rolling hills, outdoor lover’s will marvel at the geological diversity contained in such a small area. Some of the terrains are quite uneven, so make sure you’ve packed the right shoes for this activity.

The seemingly endless number of hiking trails in Thórsmörk means you can select an easy and short two to three-hour trek or a longer, multi-day hiking adventure. The Thórsmörk hike (Þórsmörk in Icelandic) on the Laugavegur Trail goes from Landmannalaugar to Thórsmörk (Thor’s Valley) and is perfect for experienced hikers. This 55 km (34-mile) trek takes most people three to five days to complete. Some adventurers even extend it to Skógar on the southern side of Eyjafjallajokull volcano. When hiking in the area, be sure to bring your swimsuit in case you want to take a dip in a Landmannalaugar hot spring.

Camping in Landmannalaugar

Got anything special in mind?

One of the best things about visiting the Icelandic Highlands is stopping to rest and spend the night at a campsite or mountain hut. This is really a roughing it, get back to nature type of experience. The huts are like cabins with hard sleep surfaces where you unroll your sleeping bag and spend the night. The Landmannalaugar camping price for the huts ranges from 5500 to 9000 ISK per person per night. The huts are in high demand, so make your booking as soon as possible. You can also camp close to the huts but will have to pay to use their facilities.

The Famous Ferðafélag Íslands Mountain Huts

The Icelandic Touring Association (Ferðafélag Íslands or FÍ) is in charge of around 40 mountain huts all around the island. Be sure to book your accommodation along popular routes, such as the Laugavegur trail, far in advance. The facilities are usually minimal and you’ll have to bring and cook your own food with you on your hike.

Many of the huts have running water and water toilets. The smaller ones of 10-20 beds may require you to use an outhouse or latrine. You may also have to fetch your own water from a nearby water source like a stream or river.

Visit their website to learn more. There’s information about prices, booking, when the huts are open, frequently asked questions, and more. When visiting Landmannalaugar, be sure to include sleeping bags on your packing list. The mountain huts provide anywhere from 10-72 beds for travellers but do not provide bedding or blankets. They are relatively warm, so an Arctic-grade sleeping bag isn't required.

A visit to Landmannalaugar, Iceland is something you have to do while visiting our beautiful country. You’ll be amazed by the unforgettable landscapes and incredible views you find here. Be sure to take a tour or excursion and take a trek along one of the famous hiking paths, such as the Laugavegur Trail to Thórsmörk.

Meet on location

The landscapes of Landmannalaugar are incredibly diverse, ranging from the black lava of the Laugahraun lava field to Mt. Brennisteinsalda, multicolored by sulfur, steaming  hot springs , green moss, and red iron.

Thanks to its location on top of a volcanic plateau, the area was formed by volcanic activity and subsequent erosion. Over time, erosion has drastically shaped the landscapes, carving out the intense valleys and canyons that characterize the area today. This has resulted in a variety of rock formations, colors and textures, which are all incredibly unique.

In front of Brennisteinsalda, there is a field of obsidian, as well as a nearby Bláhnúkur volcano, featuring stunning black and blue sides.  Landmannalaugar  presents a unique color flow that is almost painting-like - a wonderful setting for a day hike in Iceland.

This secluded area has been a favorite among adventure seekers for years, and now you have the chance to visit this magnificent place with our Landmannalaugar hiking tour.

Base Camp huts on green field in front of Landmannalaugar highlands.

The Landmannalaugar day hike is available with or without pick-up from Reykjavík. Please be sure to add pick-up to your booking if you are not planning on meeting us in Landmannalaugar for the tour. If you plan to meet us in Landmannalaugar, please keep in mind that you will need a 4x4 jeep permitted on F-roads to drive there.

Your hiking adventure will start from the main hut. You will then take off for about four hours, where you will hike around the most magnificent landscapes. The total hiking distance is approximately 8-10 km. The route goes over the Laugahraun lava field, through Vondugil canyon, and up to Mt. Brennisteinsalda, a multicolored peak that is highly characteristic of the area.

On the way down, you will walk down Graenagil gorge, called Green Gorge in Icelandic because of the dominant green color of rhyolite in the area. If time allows, we will summit Blahnukur Volcano before soaking in the hot pool and taking in the spectacular surroundings of this phenomenal place!

If you have any questions about the tour and want to book your trip and pay later, please send us your request.

We start our journey from Reykjavik and drive through the Hellisheidi mountain pass, crossing the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. We shall go through the Fjorsardalur valley along the Fjorsa River in Iceland’s southern highlands, with many beautiful sights. Fjorsardalur is within line of view of the infamous volcano Hekla.

Our first stop will be at Hjalparfoss, the pair of waterfalls formed where the Fossa and Fjorsa rivers meet and fall at an angle of forty-five degrees to each other, their cascades merging into a serene pool.

We shall make another stop near the mountainous area of the Sigoldufoss waterfall, which was transformed during the construction of the hydroelectric power station. It has been part of the Tungna glacial river for centuries or more. When the power plant was built, the glacial water was redirected into a tunnel to turn the turbines. On the waterfall site, only a small river with beautiful green-blue water flows now.

Next, we drive along a gravel road and stop at Frostastadavatn Lake, with a breathtaking landscape of colorful rhyolite mountains and black lava fields. The lake is located 573 meters above sea level. Like other lakes, it is rich in trout and, therefore, famous for anglers and travelers.

Our leading destination of the day is Landmannalaugar, where the Laugavegur and many other famous routes lie, including the path to the mighty Brennisteinsalda mountain. Visitors can also follow the Blauhnukkur volcano trail, which offers stunning views of five glaciers on clear days.

For tourists in Landmannalaugar, six tourist routes are marked. To more or less get acquainted with lava fields and formations and see colored mountains, we recommend walking along Path 1 (4 km, 1.5-2 hours) along with the Laugaraun lava field, the Brennisteinsalda, and Graenagil or along Path 2 ( 5.7 km. 2.5-3.5 hours) together with the Blauhnukkur volcano. And, of course, we plan to relax and bask in the natural hot springs near the campsite.

On the way back, we will take the road through the Domadalur valley and approach Hekla, Iceland’s most active volcano. This volcano has inspired many myths and legends and created more lava fields than elsewhere. The last eruption of Hekla was in 2000, and, fortunately, now the volcano remains inactive, but scientists regularly monitor its volcanic activity.

Then, we return to Ring Road and drive back to Reykjavik.

Please note: the itinerary is subject to change depending on weather and road conditions.

Landmannalaugar is a unique area near the volcano Hekla – in southern section of Iceland’s highlands. It displays a number of unusual geological elements, like the multicolored rhyolite mountains and expansive lava fields, not far from the service center.

The Landmannalaugar area is a popular tourist destination and hiking hub in Iceland’s highlands.  It is almost invariably the starting point of the famous Laugavegur trekking trail, but also an ideal base for a variety of rewarding daylong or shorter hikes. Tourists visit the area from June through late September, after which time the road to Landmannalaugar is closed. A mountain lodge, in operation since 1951, can accommodate 78 people and has basic amenities.

Best Places to Visit in Iceland for Couples

1. landmannalaugar.

Nestled in the colorful mountains of the Fjallabak Nature Reserve, Landmannalaugar is a geothermal wonderland and paradise for hikers. It offers stunning trails that lead to hot springs, lava fields, and breathtaking panoramic views.

Hike hand in hand through the stunning mountains, soak in hot springs, and create lasting memories in the heart of the Icelandic Highlands. If you are adventurous, get ready for the famous Laugavegur Trail, a multi-day hike that will show you all of the magical landscapes Iceland has to offer.

How to get there

Since Landmannalaugar is in the Icelandic Highlands, it is accessible only by 4×4 vehicle and only in the summer months. There are multiple ways to reach the Rainbow Mountains. If you go from Reykjavik, take the F32, and then continue on gravel road F208.

Tips on visiting

  • Be sure to experience at least one of the best hikes in Landmannalaugar !
  • The weather in Iceland is unpredictable but this goes double for the Highlands. Be prepared for any weather condition.
  • If you have time, stay awhile. The Highlands have some epic untouched and raw Icelandic landscapes. This is where the real Iceland lies.
  • If you are not an experienced driver, don’t have access to a 4×4 vehicle, or you just don’t feel comfortable driving there, you can join a tour and get to Landmannalaugar with a guide. CHECK OUT THIS TOUR WE RECOMMEND

2. Dynjandi Waterfall in Westfjords

While Seljalandsfoss is the jewel of South Iceland, Dynjandi is the jewel of Westfjords. However, due to its location is usually isn’t too crowded. If you are planning to explore Westfjords, Dynjandi should be on your list.

Why to visit

A lot of people say this one is one of Iceland’s most beautiful waterfalls and we agree. The water cascades down several steps and trails, allowing you to get very close to the waterfall. The most massive part of the waterfall can be seen from just a few meters away, and you’ll also have spectacular views of the entire Dynjandisvogur Fjord.

Moreover, as a bonus, only the very best summer guided tours in Iceland typically visit Dynjandi. This means, you will often have it all for yourself!

But that’s not all. The Dynjandisá River on its way to the sea forms a total of 7 cascades, which you can see together with the most spectacular one. The massiveness of the waterfall is seen as it flows down each terrace. While the steepest and highest part of the falls is 30 meters wide, the lower, gentler one widens up to 60 meters.

How to get reach Dynjandi Waterfall

Although Dynjandi Waterfall is in a remote and desolate area of the Vestfirðir peninsula, it is quite easy to reach by car. It is only about 250 meters from road number 60, which runs through the entire Westfjords area.

Tips for visiting Dynjandi

  • Dynjandi’s location offers nice views of remote parts of Westfjords. This is some of the most spectacular and desolate landscape of the sea bays, and it is worth it.
  • The weather in Westfjords is more unpredictable than in other parts of Iceland so be ready for the possibility of rain.

3. Vestmannaeyjar (Westman Islands)

Another paradise is in the ocean not far from the shore of the South of Iceland. For couples who want to enjoy a good hike, stunning views, and soak up nature, Vestmannaeyjar is a bit of a hidden gem. It is perfect for everyone who wants to escape the popular tourist destinations.

There’s a plethora of awe-inspiring things to do in the Westman Islands . Dramatic cliffs, puffin colonies, the iconic Eldfell volcano, and plenty of trails take you to romantic views and secret corners. Enjoy the sunset from the puffin lookout and let yourself calm down while watching the waves. All of these provide a charming and romantic setting in Iceland for couples to explore together.

Take a ferry from the south coast from a place called Landeyjahofn. It is easily accessible by car from Reykjavík or Vík. The ferry takes you to the main island and town of Heimaey.

Tips on visiting the Westman Islands

  • Enjoy the time on the board of the ferry. You will have a chance to see the coastline and small islands of the archipelago. If you are lucky and the weather is good, you might even see the majestic Eyjaffjatlajokulls volcano itself.

If you have time, stay for at least two days. Although the island seems to be small, there are many things to do and see. Don’t be in a rush and enjoy the calmness of this place.

4. Blue Lagoon

The Blue Lagoon is a geothermal spa located in a lava field on the Reykjanes Peninsula. Couples will be fascinated by the blue color of the water and the surrounding volcanic landscape which makes for a surreal and romantic atmosphere.

Blue Lagoon is one of the most famous hot springs in Iceland . And for a reason! Immerse yourself in the calm mineral-rich waters of the Blue Lagoon and treat yourself to a relaxing experience.

This romantic and relaxing getaway is a quintessential spot in Iceland for couples. The unique combination of hot springs and silica mud is said to have healing effects on the skin. It’s a perfect spot for a shared moment of tranquillity and pampering.

How to reach the Blue Lagoon

Whether you are traveling with or without a car, the Blue Lagoon is conveniently located between Keflavik and Reykjavik. It’s a short drive from Keflavik International Airport, making it an ideal stop for those arriving or departing.

If you travel by car just follow Road 41 and turn on Road 43 which will lead you to the parking of the Blue Lagoon. For those who are not traveling by car, you can buy a tour that will take you to the Blue Lagoon and many other places around.

Tips on visiting the Blue Lagoon

  • Book your tickets in advance to secure your seat. Consider visiting during off-peak hours to enjoy more peace as this attraction is very popular and it might be crowded. ***Note: Due to the ongoing volcanic eruptions on the Reykjanes Peninsula, be sure to confirm the Blue Lagoon is open. CLICK HERE TO BOOK TICKET S
  • If you want to enjoy peaceful moments with fewer people, you can visit Sky Lagoon. It doesn’t offer you mesmerizing blue water but on the other hand, you can treat yourself to a truly relaxing experience with a seven-step ritual. CLICK HERE TO BOOK TICKETS

5. Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon

Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon is a famous and romantic place located in the south of Iceland. A quickly changing landscape where icebergs float serenely on the deep blue waters is paradise for all romantic souls.

This is the perfect spot for romantic trips in Iceland. Witness the breathtaking beauty of the floating glaciers and watch the seals swimming among them. You can even take a boat trip that allows you to see the ice giants up close. When the sun is shining, you can observe changing lights and colors in the icy landscape.

The famous Diamond Beach is located a few meters from the lagoon. Here you can enjoy sparkling pieces of glaciers caught by the black sand beach before leaving to the ocean waters.

The lagoon is located along the Ring Road in southeast Iceland. It is approximately a 4.5-hour drive from Reykjavík. There are two big parking lots.  CLICK HERE TO BOOK A TOUR

  • This is a very popular tourist place, so it is usually very crowded and almost impossible to park next to the lagoon. You can leave a car on the opposite side of the road next to Diamond Beach which is usually emptier. Another idea is to plan your trip early in the morning or later afternoon/evening when there are fewer people.
  • Respect nature and do not “play” with icebergs.
  • As this place is quite far away from Reykjavik, plan the trip as part of your travel to Vík, Höfn, or Vestrahorn.
  • Jökulsárlón is not the only glacier lagoon in the area. If you have time, stop to check Fjallsárlón which is nearby.

6. Seljalandsfoss

We admit – this is probably a place you already know as it is one of the most popular spots in all of Iceland. No matter how famous the waterfall is, it is stunning, so it needs to be included in this list. For those who have no idea what we are talking about, Seljalandsfoss is a majestic waterfall that falls 60 meters from the cliffs above and is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Europe.

There are plenty of waterfalls in Iceland, but this one is unique. It is distinguished by a walking trail that allows you to follow the cascading water from behind. You can literally walk around it and enjoy its beauty from all sides and angles.

The waterfall is in the south of Iceland along the Ring Road. It is easily accessible by car from Reykjavik or any major town in the southern part of the country. If you don’t want to rent a car, you can BOOK A TOUR including a visit to all main attractions in the south, or if you are adventurous, you can try to hitchhike.

Tips on visiting Seljalandsfoss

  • Wear a waterproof jacket and sturdy shoes as the mist from the waterfall can make the path slippery.
  • Visit in the late afternoon or early evening for magical light conditions and fewer people. Pro tip: use the long summer nights and plan the visit during the midnight sun to enjoy a unique and romantic atmosphere.
  • Many people go to the main waterfall, but the area offers many others. If you follow the trail for another 400 meters, you will find a hidden gem which is Gljúfrabúi Waterfall. It is almost 60 meters high and falls from the cliffs in a narrow gorge. We recommend wearing waterproof shoes as this beauty is hidden in the “cave” and to get there you need to go to the river and jump over the rocks. The way is not for everyone, but that makes it so unique.

7. Lake Myvatn

Lake Mývatn is in the northern part of Iceland about 85 km from Akureyri. The area is unique mainly because all of the typical Icelandic landscape features can be seen here. You will find lakes, geothermal springs, volcanic craters, waterfalls, and caves. That makes it a must-visit spot.

Lake Mývatn lies in an idyllic landscape of green meadows and its jagged shores create many places for beautiful views. Thanks to its location, it can be visited year round. You can choose from many trails going around the lake, but you also should pay attention to other interesting spots in the area, such as Hverfjall crater, the geothermal area Hverir, caves Grjótagjá and Stóragjá, or “blue lagoon of the north” – Mývatn Spa .

Mývatn is very accessible for all types of cars on the main ring road number 1 because it is located right on it. There is a gravel road around the lake, which is also passable for all vehicles.

  • A trip to Mývatn should ideally be combined, for example, with a visit to Dettifoss, Iceland’s largest waterfall, or the dramatic-looking Ásbyrgi Canyon.
  • In translation, “Mývatn” means something like “Fly Lake”, and you will soon discover that the name is indeed appropriate. During the summer, millions of flies swarm around the lake so we recommend packing a repellent.
