CNBLUE (formed in 2009) is a South Korean pop and rock band formed of members Jung Yong-hwa, Lee Jong-hyun, Lee Jung-shin and Kang Min-hyuk from Seoul, South Korea.

After performing on the streets and at various live clubs in Japan, CNBLUE released their debut mini-album “Now or Never” in August 2009. With Jung Yong-hwa on lead vocals and rhythm guitar, Lee Jong-hyun on lead guitar and vocals, Lee Jung-shin on bass guitar and vocals and Kang Min-hyuk on drums, the mimi album was recorded entirely in English, although never really won the band any real attention.

The band’s second mini-album or EP “Voice” did a little better than the first, reaching No. 227 in the Oricon (Japanese Chart) comprised of both English and Japanese tracks. However it wasn't until 2010 that CNBLUE really made their mainstream mark. With their debut in South Korea, the min-album “Bluetory” was released in January 2010 and topped the Gaon Chart for two weeks. It’s lead single “I’m a Loner” debuted at No. 2 in the chart and was followed-up by a pair of mini-albums that cemented the band’s popularity in Korea.

With this popularity CNBLUE returned to Japan, which due to the cross-marketing technique adopted in the East Asian pop market, meant their success in Korea developed into success in Japan. This led to a stream of hits in both countries where the band simply had to re-record the lyrics in either the one or the other language.

CNBLUE’s subsequent Japanese releases were mainly studio albums due to the format’s popularity in Japan and included “392” in 2011, “Code Name Blue” in 2012, “What Turns You On?” in 2013 and “Wave” in 2014. The preference of mini-album or EPs in South Korea led CNBLUE to release and string of subsequent mini-albums including “Bluelove” in 2010, “First Step +1 Thank You” in 2011, “Ear Fun” in 2012, “ Re:Blue” in 2013, and “Can’t Stop” in 2014.

Live reviews

Welcome to the mainstream pop/rock scene of South Korea. It’s a place where bands are expected to release an album and a couple of EP’s of completely original material every single year, all the while touring said releases and most likely trying to cultivate an acting career at the same time. They must do all of this while promoting everything they’re putting out be it album, E.P or film, or they’ll be considered past it by the time the seasons change. I wish I was exaggerating. It’s a massively cut-throat world where if you fall behind, nine times out of ten you stay behind. The upside of it all is that it sorts the wheat from the chaff, and those left are the best there is at what they do. CNBLUE are one of the best examples of this out there. This is a band able to juggle everything I listed above with absolutely astounding live shows that, only five years into their career, can comfortably last up to two and a half hours long. Think about that for a second, Django Django, The Dead Weather and Fidlar all formed in the same year, and you’d be an idiot to expect the same from them. We’re not talking about some choreographed faux-rock show where everything is mimed either. Jung Yong-hwa, Lee Jong-hyun, Kang Min-hyuk and Lee Jung-shin are unmistakeably the real deal, spitting out everything from shredding guitar solos, quiet piano ballads, slick raps and perfect harmonies over that outrageous running time (fun fact, a considerable amount of the bands material is written by them as well). A hell of a lot of our western so called “rock stars” could learn a lot from CNBLUE show, and most of their fans would be utterly astounded by the same thing, so anyone with an appreciation for Rock and Roll at it’s finest keep an ear and an eye out, you will not regret it!

CNBLUE is one of the newer bands that I have come to like over the past few years. They have a really unique mix of rock and pop sounds that just seem to gel together really well. From when they first started to put music out until now they have continued to deliver high energy shows that the fans always get really into. I know that when I see these guys live I will experience one of the better shows of the year. The energy that is felt at their shows is unrivaled by most other acts. The fashion that these guys display is always cutting edge and you can tell that other artists look to them for some of their style and swag. The lighting that goes into their shows is always the highest quality. You can really tell that the guys that they have working for them are true professionals. I was not disappointed in anyway with the performance that they put on. With the amount of new music that these guys have put out recently there were not any bad songs in their set. Every one of their hits that I was looking forward to hearing, they played and rocked it out.

I was fortunate to be able to attend a CNBLUE Concert in 2017 in Korea!!! I live in Hawaii and am a huge fan of CNBLUE!!! A friend told me in the end of April that CNBLUE was having a concert in June. With the help of a friend, I was able to get tickets for the concert, make airline and hotel reservations within a couple weeks. It was such an awesome concert!!! My friend and I stood through the entire concert, dancing and singing along!!! I was 66 years "young" at the time and felt like a teenager! I attended many concerts growing up but never enjoyed any of them like I did this CNBLUE Concert!!! I will never forget it!!! They sang all of their great songs and were so attentive to the audience!!! I would love to see them in Concert again someday!!!

Tourism must adapt to the post-pandemic environment to drive growth in Emerging Asia

31 March 2023 – Growth in Emerging Asia is proving resilient with real GDP growth in 2023 projected to 5.3 % on average in Emerging Asian economies (ASEAN-10, China and India), and by 4.6 % on average in ASEAN economies alone.

The export sector helped boost economic growth and maintain the momentum of the region’s economies, though it has weakened recently. Inflation combined with interest rate differentials among countries increase the volatility of capital flows and put pressure on local currencies in the region. Ongoing supply-side bottlenecks threaten food security and may lead to even higher prices of goods and services which could impact both external and domestic demand.

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, travel and tourism generated approximately 12% of GDP in Southeast Asian economies and provided around 11% of employment in Emerging Asia as a whole. The return of tourists will therefore be key to further bolster economies amidst uncertainties and weak external demand, according to the Economic Outlook for Southeast Asia, China and India 2023: Reviving Tourism Post-Pandemic released today. Tourism is beginning to rebound as the restrictions implemented in response to the COVID-19 pandemic have been lifted. However, the sector must adapt to various challenges to reach its full potential. It is composed mostly of micro, small and medium-sized enterprises, many of which require assistance in digitalising their operations. Their workers also need to enhance their digital skills to enhance productivity, and informal and migrant workers need to be integrated into social support systems. These factors, combined with more demanding working conditions and lower wages than in many other sectors, have made recruitment difficult. As tourism continues to pick up, there is a risk that the recovery could stall where labour forces are not large or skilled enough. There is also a need to adapt to new travel preferences post pandemic. In addition to local travel and rediscovery, the confinement of lockdowns and focus on illness prevention reinvigorated desires for nature tourism or experiences focused on health and wellness. “The pandemic changed tourist preferences, with greater interest in local travel, nature destinations and wellness tourism. It also heightened awareness of environmental issues, which is an opportunity to enhance sustainable tourism,” OECD Secretary-General Mathias Cormann said. “Diversifying and expanding inbound markets by increasing domestic and intra-ASEAN tourism and addressing the gaps in ICT infrastructure, cybersecurity, and digital skills will help to revive tourism as a growth engine for Emerging Asian economies.” The post-lockdown reopening of China will serve to counterbalance and provide a necessary economic boost for the region. Developing stronger transportation links, especially low-cost airlines, could promote more intra-ASEAN tourism, especially to destinations that receive relatively few international travellers. India remains a largely untapped source market despite its large population and certain Southeast Asian countries could diversify their tourist flows to become less reliant on any single country as a major tourist source. These migrants arrive with complex asylum claims and, because of bureaucratic and diplomatic obstacles, are among the most difficult to deport when they don’t qualify for protection. Many are released into the United States with a pending court date that may be years away .

Some migrants say they could be killed if sent home. Many risked their lives crossing oceans or jungles to reach the border in search of a better life. The legal basis for an asylum claim is a flight from persecution, not a yearning for American prosperity.

Immigration judges are churning out decisions at a record clip. Still, decisions about sensitive cases involving violence and persecution tend to take years. That means many of the new immigrants are living in a state of long-term limbo, even as they become more enmeshed in the fabric of American life.

Economists say the migrants have helped America’s post-covid economy to be one of the strongest in the world. But the United States remains tangled in a bitter debate over the costs and benefits of these new arrivals, which has been amplified by this year’s presidential campaign .

Biden tightened border restrictions to curb asylum claims after former president and presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump rallied Republicans to defeat a bipartisan bill that would have expanded immigration enforcement . Trump blames Biden for inviting mass migration, and he is pledging to close the border and deploy U.S. troops to carry out deportations if he’s elected in November.

Where people have settled

Unlike the immigrants of the late 1800s and early 1900s who arrived at Ellis Island on transatlantic steam ships, the journey today often unfolds in two phases. One is the physical challenge of reaching U.S. territory. A second, longer odyssey follows in the U.S. immigration court system, which must sort out who is allowed to stay.

The Post’s analysis of U.S. immigration court data shows that about 3 million migrants who have arrived since 2014 have active cases. More than three in five have entered the United States since 2021, the year Biden took office.

Their legal status in America remains unresolved, but they are already building lives: many are taking low-wage jobs, sending children to school and relocating to communities across the United States that have not been traditional immigrant destinations.

Migrant arrivals since 2014, according to court data

cnblue asia tour 2023

Court filings show the newest immigrants are settling across rural and urban America. They and other arrivals have pushed the share of the U.S. population that is foreign-born to nearly 14 percent, the highest in more than a century. New immigrant hubs have formed around jobs in meatpacking , agriculture and petroleum.

Some of the biggest growth areas are in Florida and Texas, where the immigrant population continues to expand thanks to plentiful jobs and cheaper housing — and despite immigration crackdowns by Republican Govs. Ron DeSantis and Greg Abbott .

The growth is uneven. West Virginia , Wyoming and North Dakota — states with severe labor shortages — attracted hardly any of the newcomers, while New York, Chicago and Denver have received thousands as Abbott has bused more from the border to those cities. California, a traditional destination, is also home to large numbers of new arrivals.

Immigrant hubs by nationality

Migrants have long chosen to settle with family and friends in the United States. Some arrive with a relative’s phone number scrawled on their hands. Many newer arrivals have few contacts, however, and end up in city shelters.

Guatemalans and Hondurans have been crossing the U.S. southern border for many years, fleeing violence, drought and hunger. Like the Mexican immigrants facing deportation, they are widely distributed across urban and rural areas, with fast-growing communities in western and southern U.S. states.

Venezuelans became a top group entering the United States for the first time under the Biden administration, a surge that has demonstrated how rapidly migration can change. New enclaves of Venezuelan migrants have formed in places such as Salt Lake City, Denver and Dallas. If Maduro extends his rule during next month’s election, he could trigger another mass exodus.

Migration from El Salvador has fallen in recent years under President Nayib Bukele , who has generated both accolades and criticism for an iron-fisted anti-gang campaign. El Salvador has gone from one of Latin America’s most dangerous countries to one of its safest, and far fewer Salvadorans are leaving.

Cuban migration to the United States has been at record levels due to the country’s tanking economy and long-standing U.S. penalties that tightened under Trump. Cubans enjoy special privileges under U.S. law, and roughly five percent of the island’s population has crossed into the United States since 2021. Louisville, Las Vegas and Houston are new destinations for Cubans, court filings show.

Turmoil in Haiti has sent more people fleeing — and made U.S. deportations to Haiti more controversial. Many of the Haitians who have surged to the United States have arrived from Chile or other South American nations where they found refuge after Haiti’s devastating 2010 earthquake. They risk deportation to a place they left years ago. Haitian communities in Massachusetts, New Jersey and Florida have expanded in recent years, the data show.

Immigration court cases have jumped for other Latin American nations, including Colombians, Brazilians, Peruvians and Ecuadorians , the latter fleeing new waves of drug-fueled gang violence . Those groups are concentrating in New York, Florida and the Midwest.

During the past two years, U.S. border authorities have apprehended more migrants from Africa and Asia than ever before. Guided by smuggling organizations, these groups often arrive to South America then head north to follow the dangerous Darién Gap jungle route between Colombia and Panama, eventually reaching the U.S.-Mexico border.

About 50,000 Chinese migrants have crossed into the United States along the Mexico border since 2023. Court data show many of the most recent migrants are settling in Queens or Los Angeles’s Monterey Park area. Migrants from India are streaming to California. Russians, many of whom say they’re fleeing the war on Ukraine and forced conscription, are going to New York, Sacramento and Los Angeles.

About this story

The Washington Post used immigration court case data through May 2024 released by the Justice Department. Reporters limited their analysis to cases with entry dates since the start of 2014, omitting all cases missing entry dates. Although migrants may have multiple cases of entry over the decade, each person is only counted once. And although the overall analysis figures include detainees currently in government custody, the maps of where migrants have settled do not.

The data does not specify how every migrant entered the United States, but an analysis of charges and reporting on the topic revealed that most migrants entered through the southern border of the United States.

The Justice Department agency that runs the immigration courts, the Executive Office for Immigration Review, started releasing the data monthly to the public after receiving requests from the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse at Syracuse University, which publishes the information.
