Calanques cruises: how to choose the right service
Decided to visit the Calanques on a boat trip? The number of authorised passenger crafts in the Calanques is limited. They can be identified by a sticker and an orange flag .
Note: craft not bearing these identification signs are illegal and passengers can be charged. Choose carefully!
I'm a professionnel: information about transporting passengers
Maritime passenger transport: summary of regulations
Hire a boat from an authorised professional
To protect the environment from the impact of maritime traffic, the Calanques National Park has established regulations for motorboat hire.
Only professionals with a green sticker are authorised to hire out boats. Note: no green sticker means the service is illegal and customers can be charged. Choose carefully!
Special case: hire a boat with a skipper
I'm a professional: more information about motorboat hire
Boat hire between individuals in the Calanques
Boat hire between individuals for use in the Calanques is authorised but subject to strict regulations.
Please be careful - many problems result in this activity each year. We strongly recommend hiring a boat from an authorised professional rather than a private boat owner.
The marine environment of the Calanques National Park is protected. Both private and hire boats are subject to basic regulations and recommended conduct to preserve the site and ensure optimal conditions for all.
A sign of quality: the blue flag or Pavillon Bleu
The blue flag or sticker showing the Esprit Parc national quality label identifies boats that provide excellent service.

Visit the Calanques by boat from Cassis: tips + photos
by Morgane MAZELIER , Region Lovers | May 12, 2024 | no intrusive ads, no sponsored content, just some affiliate links - if you use them, we get a small commission (read more)
The Massif des Calanques is a National Park stretching over 20km along the Côte d’Azur between Marseille and Cassis. We explored it on a boat trip from Cassis . We loved this walk, which offers breathtaking scenery ! The Calanques are little corners of paradise wedged between scarlet cliffs and an azure sea.
Here are some useful tips for planning your boat trip to the Calanques from Cassis.
This guide is completely independent , based on our experiences. We visited the region anonymously, making our own choices and paying our bills in full.
Is a boat trip to the calanques worth it?
Absolutely! We recommend exploring the Calanques of Cassis and Marseille by boat! You can admire them from the sea. It’s a completely different spectacle from that offered from the coast. We found it an unforgettable experience. You’ll discover one of the most beautiful beaches on the Côte d’Azur .
Sailing along the Mediterranean coast gave us the opportunity to observe breathtaking natural landscapes. Each calanque is unique and will charm you with its turquoise waters, white cliffs and umbrella pines. We loved discovering 9 of them, from Cassis to Marseille, during our 2h20 excursion.
It was a magical, rejuvenating excursion in the heart of the Côte d’Azur. In fact, it’s one of the best things to do in Cassis !
What you can see
The port-miou cove.
Our tour of the Calanques begins with a visit to the Calanque de Port-Miou. Did you know? It’s the only one to be part of the Cassis commune. All the other Calanques are attached to Marseille!
We noticed that the Port-Miou Calanque stands out from the others for its sinuous profile and its length: 1.4 km. It is bordered by high cliffs and features a remarkable coastal notch.
We learned 3 interesting facts about this cove:
- it is home to some 550 boats under 20m in length, as a light nautical base.
- “Port-Miou” in Provençal means “good port”. In fact, this very deep cove provides excellent shelter for boats on windy days with rough seas.
- the indentation in the rock that characterizes this small port has been partly shaped by man. Specifically, we discovered that this cove has been a busy limestone quarry for centuries.
We also discovered it on a hike from Cassis to the Calanques de Port-Miou and Port-Pin . We recommend it if you want to visit the pretty beach of Port-Pin. This Provencal nature walk offers beautiful views of the Mediterranean.
Calanque de Port-Pin
We enjoyed admiring the beautiful Calanque de Port-Pin! It’s the second on the program for this Mediterranean excursion.
This Calanque takes its name from the abundance of Aleppo pines that surround the charming wooded beach. We loved this magnificent indentation in the coast and its peaceful beach.
If you’re keen on water sports, this Calanque is the place to be:
- sea kayaking : we recommend this activity for exploring the calanques at your own pace and admiring their sublime landscapes. Accessible to all, kayaking is an ideal way to discover the Mediterranean coast and the calanques – See prices and book
- on a paddle: we recommend this activity, which combines sport and relaxation to perfection. Paddle in complete tranquillity, alone, with family or friends, to discover the cliffs and marine fauna – See prices and availability .
OUR TPS FOR RENTING YOUR CAR IN Provence
- Compare prices on our preferred platform: DiscoverCars – one of the best rated sites.
- Choose a car that is powerful enough (the roads are steep) but compact (some passages are narrow).
- Think of the complete insurance (some roads are tortuous and narrow).
- There is a lot of demand, book it early .
We could see through the crystal-clear water that the seabed in this Calanque is full of life. In fact, we observed fish very close to the boat. We recommend a visit to this cove if you’re interested in snorkeling.
Would you like to dive in the transparent waters of the Calanques? Book your diving day from Marseille now !
The Calanque d’En-Vau is also a popular spot for rock climbing, with numerous routes on the surrounding cliffs.
Let yourself be tempted by a climbing course to discover the landscapes of the Côte d’Azur in a different way. – See prices and book
Calanque de l’Oule
We really liked the sharp scarlet cliffs of the Calanque de l’Oule. They reminded us of a Gothic cathedral. This Calanque is less well known than some of the others in the region. We loved its raw beauty and peaceful atmosphere.
During our boat trip, we noticed a hole in the rock. We imagined lost sailors nestling in the heart of this natural shelter on a stormy evening.
Does this boat trip make you want to discover the Calanques on foot? Take a guided tour and discover them up close:
- How about a half-day hike in the Parc National des Calanques ?
- Or how about a day trip to the region’s most beautiful landscapes ?
Calanque du Devenson
The 4th cove we visited during our boat trip in the heart of the Parc National des Calanques is Devenson. It, too, is one of the region’s lesser-known attractions.
We were struck by its wild, unspoilt character due to its difficult access. We were impressed by the white limestone cliffs of the Calanque du Devenson. They reach heights of over 250m. Faced with this landscape, we remembered how small we are in the face of nature.

La Calanque de St-Jean de Dieu or de l’Œil de Verre
The name of this heavenly cove immediately appealed to us. We learned on the boat trip that it comes from the cave at its end. It’s called the Glass Eye because of the color of the water inside, which creates a unique visual effect reminiscent of this object.
This fascinating natural feature makes it a popular destination for photographers and divers. Beyond the sea cave, we loved the magnificent landscapes that line this Calanque. Observe the steep cliffs, crystal-clear water and pine trees clinging to the rock.
Sugiton cove
This cove is one of the most popular in the National Park. We noticed that the small pebble beach in this cove attracts many visitors.
We learned that this calanque is also known for its famous “trou de Sugiton”. An underwater grotto running through the cliff, accessible by swimming underwater.
The Calanque of Morgiou
We loved this cove, which stands out from the other Calanques we visited on our tour. It’s not as wild as its neighbors, but that doesn’t mean it lacks charm.
We loved the little village of colorful huts lining the beach. Its picturesque atmosphere, far from the hustle and bustle of the city, seems to offer a glimpse of Provencal life of yesteryear. The colors of the houses contrast with the whiteness of the limestone cliffs to create a picture-postcard landscape!
Calanque de Sormiou
This Calanque was the last of our excursion to discover some of the treasures of the Côte d’Azur. Sormiou struck us as the most civilized of all the Calanques we visited.
Indeed, we’ve learned that at the far end is a bustling village. It borders the beach, where you’ll find restaurants, cafés and more.

The excursion company offers tours of 3, 5, 8 or 9 calanques. We strongly advise you to choose the one that allows you to admire 9 of them! Visit the Calanques of Port-Miou, Port-Pin, En-Vau, Loule, Oeil de Verre, Sugiton, Morgiou and Sormiou. This tour takes around 2 hours 20 minutes, while the shorter one takes 1 hour.
Best moment
We recommend you avoid the 2.30 – 4 p.m. slot, which is the most popular with visitors. Instead, opt for an early-morning excursion, around 10:30 a.m. for example. The crowds will be smaller and you won’t feel so hot.

How to Do a Cassis Boat Tour to the Calanques
The colorful seaside village of Cassis is the gateway to a network of secret beaches in Calanques National Park, along France’s Mediterranean Coast. The best way to visit these hidden beaches is with an easy Cassis boat tour that will take you on a scenic journey along the coast and into the rocky harbors that hide these secluded beaches.
On my recent trip to the South of France I spent a day in Cassis and took my own boat tour to Calanques National Park. I was so impressed by the experience that I wanted to share it with you and give you some tips that I wish I’d known before I arrived in Cassis.
Why Take a Cassis Boat Tour?
One of the highlights of any trip to Provence is a visit to the Calanques National Park. Located along the French Riviera between Marseille and La Ciotat, Calanques National Park is known for its beautiful, and hard-to-access, beaches. These beaches are situated in narrow, rocky coves, which are called calanques , or “creeks”, that have been carved out of the forest shoreline. A boat tour from Cassis is the safest and easiest way to see the beautiful calanques along the Mediterranean coastline.
The Basic Cassis Boat Tours to the Calanques
There are a few different basic boat tours from Cassis to the Calanques. They are all on boats similar to the one in the photo above (that’s the actual boat I was on – the Noto II) but they vary in terms of duration and the number of calanques you see. Here are the basic routes:
- 3 calanques in 1 hour
- 5 calanques in 80 minutes
- 8 calanques in 1 hour, 50 minutes
- 9 calanques in 2 hours, 20 minutes (the last one, Sormiou, is pretty far away!)
As of June 2024, the prices for these tours seem to be the same as last summer. Adult tickets were priced at €21, €25, €29 and €33, respectively. Prices for youth aged 0-11 were about 1/3 less than the adult price.
There’s nothing fancy about the basic boat tours from Cassis except the views, which are spectacular. My boat had audio commentary in both English and French, although at times it was quite difficult to hear. I followed our route on Google Maps to know which calanques we were touring and to get more information about each one.
Although the basic boat tours from Cassis don’t include swimming, there is a good chance you’ll get wet! Consider packing your belongings in a waterproof bag and be careful with your phone or camera when the water is splashing over the side. You’ll also want to be very careful about sun protection and hydration if your tour is in the summer sun, so choose seats in the shade if possible, bring a water bottle and cover up with layers and sunscreen before the boat departs.
Cassis Boat Tours with Swimming in the Calanques
Most Cassis boat tours just tour the calanques without having a swimming stop. However, in the high season there are several daily departures that include a stop (often labelled as a “ détente” ) for swimming. The calanque where you stop for swimming will depend on the amount of boat traffic and the water conditions.
The boats can’t sail all the way into the beach in each calanque, as there are roped-off swimming areas (can you see the yellow buoys in the photo above?). Thus, the boat tours that include a swimming stop are restricted only to confident swimmers, as there are no shallow areas or lifeguards on duty – you jump right off the boat into the Mediterranean!
Again, as of June 2024, prices for the calanques tours with swimming seem to have the same price as last summer – €40, and last a total of two hours (including swimming).
Cassis Boat Tour Tickets
Taking a boat tour from Cassis to the Calanques is a lot easier than you’d imagine. Several different boat operators work together to fill a full schedule of boat tours. They all sell their tickets from a single wooden kiosk – I forgot to take a photo, but if you were standing at the same place as I took this photo it would be just over to your right, near the beach (and also you would be standing in the water…).
To buy a ticket for a Cassis boat tour, you just go to the kiosk and tell the staff your preferred departure time. They don’t accept reservations by phone or email, so just swing by when you arrive in Cassis and choose from the available sailings later in the day. You will be given a ticket that says your departure time and they will verbally tell you the name of the boat to look for on the adjacent dock.
Plan to be ready at the boat at least five minutes before the scheduled departure time, and more like fifteen minutes if you want to choose from all the available seats.

Is a boat tour from Cassis to the Calanques worth it?
Absolutely! The French Riviera is known for being an expensive luxury travel destination, but I thought the prices for the boat tours were very reasonable in light of their duration and comfort levels. I also loved that I could just show up and go out on the next boat, without needing to reserve in advance and then worry about coordinating the bus or train to make my scheduled departure.
I absolutely love to swim, so my biggest regret about my own Cassis boat tour is that I didn’t choose one of the options that included a swimming stop. Next time I’m in the area I will absolutely take advantage of the opportunity to swim in that crystal-clear turquoise water.
Other Ways to Visit the Calanques in the South of France
You don’t have to take a Cassis boat tour to reach the Calanques National Park (although it’s definitely the easiest way!).
It is possible to hike from Cassis to many of the Calanques. Download the official Mes Calanques app to get information about hiking routes, trail closures and current conditions.
The hikes to the Calanques can be strenuous and there are no services en route, or upon arrival at the beaches. Novice hikers will definitely want to join an organized hiking tour to have the expertise of a local guide.
If you’re not up for a hike, it’s also possible to join a stand-up paddleboard (SUP) tour to the Calanques . These depart from Cassis and visit three Calanques.
It’s also possible to visit the Calanques by boat from Marseille . Make sure you choose one of the trips that go to the Calanques National Park (like the two I’ve linked here) as some operators run trips out to the Frioul Islands and try to pretend they are the Calanques! 😲
Alternately, the last, highly-rated tour I’ll link below will take you on a four-hour sailing from Marseille to the calanques on the northwest coast of the city: they are still stunning calanques, but they don’t fall within the boundaries of the national park.
I visited Cassis as a day trip from Marseille, which turned out to be one of my favorite cities in the South of France.
Make sure to read my guide to the best things to see and do in Marseille , as well as my seven-day Provence itinerary (no car required!).

Then, we will see the wild calanques of Marseilleveyre and La Mounine before entering the natural park of Riou archipelago , which is home to many sea geese. Our next visit will be to Sormiou : this jewel of Marseille is a real postcard setting, thanks to its turquoise water combined with its beach and Mediterranean vegetation. Continuing northwards, we will approach the Calanque de la Triperie, home to the Cosquer Cave which is now closed to the public, to preserve its 27,000 year old paintings. Our boat will then head towards the Morgiou, which is a real gem of the city of Marseille. A unique view of the Cap Morgiou is then offered to you! In the hollow of the cove, you will also find a small traditional fishing port. The last calanque we will see is the Sugiton . At 10 metres from its shore, you can see the rocky islet called the Torpilleur . Finally, we will return to the Old Port of Marseille. On the way back, you will have the opportunity to see again all the calanques one by one. Highlights - Discovery of the 6 largest calanques of Marseille: Callelongue, Marseilleveyre, La Mounine, Sormiou, Morgiou and Sugiton - Audio commentary in French and explanatory booklet in over 8 languages - Observation of the Mediterranean fauna and flora Departure & Return We meet 20 minutes before the booked time , at the Vieux-Port of Marseille, opposite the Vieux-Port pharmacy. 6 Best Places To Stay In Marseille, France
W hen I first went to Marseille, around 30 years ago, it was a tough-looking city with an even tougher reputation. It certainly wasn’t somewhere tourists were flocking to and it was known as somewhere not to go, rather than somewhere for a fun trip. But, thankfully, all that has changed and while Marseille still has some rough-around-the-edges elements, it’s now an interesting French city with a unique character and some quirkiness. It’s also a university city and student life is apparent if you go out in the evenings or wander around near campus.
There are some great places to stay in Marseille, from spa hotels to budget-friendly stays. Here’s my pick of the best places to stay in Marseille, France.
1. Alex Hotel & Spa
Proudly boasting its status as the only boutique hotel in Marseille, Alex Hotel is a cute little bed and breakfast with its own little spa. There’s a large Jacuzzi pool, sauna, steam room, and treatment room for massages. The roof terrace is a lovely spot for breakfast or to sit with a drink in the evenings and watch Marseille life go by. There’s no restaurant here, but there are restaurants nearby and the staff at the hotel are happy to recommend places to eat. I love how individual this hotel is; it’s a real find.
The hotel is perfectly situated for anyone arriving by train as it’s positioned just a few steps away from the entrance to St. Charles Station. The area still needs some renovation and it does still hold onto a little of its rough past, but it’s a characterful place for a wander around and there’s plenty going on here. It gives you a feeling of local life while also giving you a cute boutique hotel to stay in.
2. Nhow Marseille
Nhow Marseille is a city hotel with a sea view. The décor inside is mostly Art Deco and quite quirky as it jumps from one style to another, and from one era to another, as you walk around. A big plus for Marseille is that there’s an outdoor swimming pool with a gorgeous sea view. The pool is saltwater too, so you feel at one with the sea and don’t get that chlorine smell. There’s a small spa on site with Jacuzzis and an indoor heated pool, but be aware that there is a charge to use this even for guests of the hotel.
Dining And Drinks
The menu is quite short and when, at first glance, you see a Caesar salad on the mains, it might seem like the options are limited. It’s true, some of the dishes are small, but the food is really good and a limited menu isn’t necessarily a bad thing. You definitely need all three courses here and I’d suggest soup to start, the linguine for a main, and the pavlova for dessert. If you want to push the boat out, the wine list is really good with some excellent champagnes. There is also a sky bar with a terrace that has fantastic views and is a lovely spot for a drink after dinner.
3. Staycity Aparthotel
Perfect for anyone who wants an apartment but also likes the amenities and security of a hotel, Staycity Aparthotel is a cross between a self-catering apartment and a hotel. Rooms have their own kitchens so you can cook in your apartment, but there’s also a small café by the reception where you can get a light breakfast and snacks throughout the day. There’s a gym on site and the reception runs 24 hours a day, so there’s always someone on hand if you need them.
You’re in a great central location at this aparthotel, with everything in easy reach. It’s a 10-minute walk to the train station and 10 minutes to walk to the port, so however you arrive in Marseille, you can easily reach the hotel. It takes 20 minutes to walk to the beach from here and 20 minutes to walk to Les Terasses shopping center. But if you don’t want to walk, there are lots of taxis around to take you.
4. Hotel La Residence Du Vieux-Port
At Hotel La Residence du Vieux-Port , you get a room with a view — in almost every room in the hotel — because the rooms all overlook the port and the city beyond. It is an ideal position for sitting out on your balcony with a drink or enjoying a coffee in the morning. Throughout the hotel, the décor is bright and quite quirky, giving it a very modern feel. It’s a great location by the port, and if you want to explore Marseille further, there’s a bus that stops right by the hotel and takes you around town.
Continuing the theme, the onsite restaurant, Le Relais50, also has a striking view. If you sit out on the terrace on a fine day, it’s a beautiful spot to enjoy lunch or dinner. It’s quite pricey, but the food is really good. I skipped the starters and went straight for the main course. I chose the vegetable pesto pasta, which was very good. There’s also a good filet steak on the menu and a list of side salads. For dessert, I chose the cheesecake, which was also really good. They have a “dish of the week” — which was a fish curry when we were there — and it seemed to be offered at a slightly cheaper price than the rest of the menu.
5. Hotel 96
Hotel 96 is a bed and breakfast, so it doesn’t offer dinner, but it has a lot of character and a relaxed tone to it. I think where this small hotel really shines is in its attentiveness to its guests and how everything is done with a lot of thought. It’s a pity they don’t offer dinner as the breakfast is so good; I imagine dinner would be excellent. There’s an outdoor pool, which is only open until 7 p.m., and is surrounded by lovely gardens. It feels semi-rural and has a French farmhouse atmosphere to it. It’s a lovely quiet spot for relaxing.
This one is a little out of the city center, but it’s not far from the hiking trails and beaches of Calanques, so it does give you the option of both if you want to explore a little further from the busy city. You can get to both easily by taxi, or you can walk to the Calanques. It’s in a much quieter location than the city center hotels, so it’s perfect for anyone who wants to visit the city but also someone who likes some peaceful and quiet surroundings.
6. Meininger
A bit like a cross between a hotel and a hostel, Meininger is a budget hotel that’s popular with families. You can book a private double room, like a hotel, or you can opt for one of the communal rooms that have single beds and bunk beds in them, like a hostel. It’s a great choice for anyone traveling on a budget or for large families. There’s a big kitchen area, a laundry room, and a game room, and you can buy breakfast on site at a really reasonable price. It’s a hotel if you want it to be, it’s a hostel if that’s what you’re looking for, or it’s both!
Situated 15 minutes away from the old port on foot, the hotel enjoys a good location for exploring the city. It’s central and within easy reach of everything you’d want to see, plus there are plenty of restaurants and bars close by. You need to use your key to enter the building in the evening as the reception isn’t staffed 24 hours a day, but it feels safe and is not a problem.
