How to prepare for the best Black Friday and Cyber Monday travel bargains

Jordan Waller

Whether you have your eye on a sweet rate for a high-end hotel suite, want to save cash on transatlantic airfare, bag a great deal on Brightline tickets or simply snag a good price on a pair of designer sunglasses or luggage, there's something for everyone.

But with so many deals flying around, finding the right one for you can be overwhelming. Here's how to navigate your way through this year's Black Friday deals and maximize your savings.

When is Black Friday, Cyber Monday and Travel Tuesday?

black friday travel deals 2022

As the sales period has evolved, knowing when to grab a bargain can be confusing.

Generally speaking, there are three main days of sales in 2023:

  • Black Friday (Nov. 24)
  • Cyber Monday (Nov. 27)
  • Travel Tuesday (Nov. 28)

Traditionally, Black Friday is best for getting deals in-store; however, each year, we've seen more and more online deals and sales. A worthwhile tip is to check both in-store and online pricing if you can before buying anything.

Cyber Monday occurs on the Monday after Black Friday and is when most companies release deals online. However, it's not uncommon for companies to launch deals even earlier. A good example is Amazon, which will launch its Black Friday sales early on Nov. 17, or Walmart, which began its Black Friday sales on Nov. 9.

Meanwhile, Travel Tuesday is the day after Cyber Monday and is when we see airlines, hotels, cruise operators and other travel companies release flash sales and other deals they haven't already shared.

Here's a run-through of other key Black Friday sale dates to put on your calendar:

What travel deals have we seen on Black Friday, Cyber Monday and Travel Tuesday?

Not every Black Friday travel deal will be one to drop everything for and book, but there are always noteworthy exceptions.

For example, a few years ago, on Cyber Monday, Expedia offered 90% off of hotels booked through their mobile app.

In previous years JetBlue has offered promo codes for $100 off of flights and up to $400 off of JetBlue Vacations packages. Spirit Airlines has offered one-way flights starting at $20.21. Frontier Airlines has also discounted flights by 99%. Alaska Airlines also ran a $29 fare sale last year.

black friday travel deals 2022

Many international airlines also offer Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals. For instance, Air Canada last year offered up to 30% discount on fares. Likewise, Qatar Airways has participated, offering a 10% discount on newly booked flights. British Airways also often has significant discounts for its travel packages.

Last year we saw savings of up to 40% with Omni Hotels and Resorts, MSC Cruises and Holland America.

While theme parks like Disney don't always participate in Black Friday-specific sales, others do. For example, in 2020, we saw Legoland offer up to 50% off passes, and Universal Orlando also ran a buy-two-get-two-days free deal.

On the hotel front, Fairmont has sold eGift cards at a 20% discount. And those looking to purchase an annual Clear membership have also had chances to save $40 during past Black Friday sales.

How to find Black Friday travel deals and maximize your savings

Black Friday and Cyber Monday travel deals have already started popping up, though the intensity and frequency of the deals will only increase as Thanksgiving approaches.

The best outcome for shopping Black Friday travel deals is when you are able to double or even triple dip your savings. In addition to finding the deal itself, you might also be able to earn extra cash back or bonus points. This applies to merchandise purchases as well.

Here are some top tips for staying ahead of the curve so you can pounce on the best deals as they're released and also make some additional savings.

black friday travel deals 2022

Follow the right social media accounts and email newsletters

Subscribe to email lists for every airline, hotel brand, car rental company, rail operator and more that you're interested in. As a rule of thumb, if the brand also has a loyalty program, you should sign up for that, too. Special deals are often released to members that aren't accessible to the general public.

For example, if you're interested in deals from Royal Caribbean , JetBlue Airways and Hyatt , be sure you're on their respective email lists.

You should also follow the travel brands you care about on social media platforms such as Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and TikTok, as the companies often promote special savings on their accounts.

But don't just stop there. You should also make sure you're signed up for booking sites like Expedia and airfare sites like Skyscanner, which will likely flag drops in prices or special offers that they're running.

TPG will share curated lists of Black Friday deals for cruises , airlines, hotels, travel gear and more, too, so remember to follow the TPG social channels and subscribe to the free TPG daily newsletter .

Set price alerts for dream trips

One additional way to find Black Friday travel deals (at least for airfare) is to let the deals come to you. This may not work for all deals, but setting a price alert for a flight you know you want to take is a great way to get notified of price drops without having to constantly scour the web for savings.

There are some early Black Friday deals already out there, so we recommend getting these tips into action as soon as possible if you want to be able to shop the broadest selection of offers.

Check historical pricing

Just because a Black Friday or Cyber Monday travel deal pops into your email doesn't necessarily mean it is a deal.

It's not unheard of to see some hotels offer promotions that aren't actually cheaper than member rates or ongoing AAA rates. Double-check member rates and any loyalty program savings before you book.

It's wise to think through where you want to go now, then see what the regular prices are for everything from hotels to flights for the destination you are most interested in. This way, you'll be better positioned to judge just how much of a deal something truly is.

Airfare deals can be subject to seasonality and hidden fees, such as charges for checked bags. Use Google Flight's historical pricing feature to understand whether the offered deal is a good saving or whether adding things like checked bags will wipe out any savings.

Finally, sites like Amazon regularly see prices yo-yo throughout the year, and they don't always save their best deals for Black Friday or Prime Day. If you're buying from Amazon, we recommend using a site like Camelcamelcamel.com , which tracks historical shifts in pricing. You can also use the site to set alerts on specific products you want to buy,

Use online shopping portals

Many travel companies are part of an online shopping portal , and if you book through a shopping portal, you can earn something in return, such as extra points, miles or cash back.

To get the most bang for your buck, use a shopping portal aggregator like CashbackMonitor.com or Evreward.com to see which portal has the best return — since payouts can vary from day to day.

black friday travel deals 2022

You won't find all travel companies on sites like Rakuten, but it's worth looking there, too, especially since many shopping portals will offer an increased payout during the Black Friday and Cyber Monday period.

For example, let's say you are booking a trip with IHG . Often, you'll find that you can earn cash back for stays at select properties by first starting at the Rakuten shopping portal. While rates are typically around 3%, we've seen promotions climb to as much as 20% cash back.

Marriott , Hertz, Hawaiian Airlines , Qatar Airways, Expedia and British Airways are just some of the other travel companies that can be found in these booking portals.

Check your Amex Offers

Amex Offers is one of our favorite ways to save money on purchases, and you can easily save hundreds of dollars each year by applying Amex Offers to bookings.

Travel-related Amex Offers pop up regularly, especially during Black Friday and Cyber Monday travel bookings. Do remember, however, that you must use your targeted American Express credit card when paying after adding the offer to your card to take advantage of these special offers.

black friday travel deals 2022

If you have multiple American Express credit cards, you'll want to look through all your accounts, as you might see different offers per card.

Also, keep in mind that a purchase must actually go through by the expiration date. So, if you make a hotel reservation at the Grand Hyatt Vail for next March and don't pay when you book, the statement credit won't be triggered.

Use the right credit cards

In addition to paying attention to Amex Offers and similar deals via credit card issuers, it's important to ensure you're always using the best travel credit card possible when finalizing any travel-related reservation. This is so you receive extra perks, such as automatic travel protection or bonus points, for every purchase.

black friday travel deals 2022

Two of our favorite cards for travel purchases are the Chase Sapphire Reserve and the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card .

With these cards, you'll earn bonus points for each dollar spent on travel (excluding when you're using the Reserve's $300 travel credit) and receive top-notch travel protection benefits. This will come in handy in case you get sick before a trip and need to cancel, incur a delay while sitting at the airport or need to be evacuated in case of an emergency.

Use the ability to rebook to your advantage

In many situations, you can refund your airline tickets or hotel booking within 24 hours of making your reservation, so it's often best to err on the side of booking first and double-check all the details later if you don't want to miss out. This is especially true for booking sites that offer significantly discounted promotions for only a limited number of reservations.

Even if you aren't in the market for a new trip right now, you may find it possible to save on your trip if you rebook any flights or hotels you've already locked in at a lower Black Friday travel deal price.

With many hotels and airlines offering flexible cancellation policies these days, it is easy to cancel and rebook in some cases if the flight you have already booked goes on sale. Some carriers, such as Southwest Airlines , even allow you to re-price a fare without going through the process of canceling and rebooking your flights.

Don't wait too long

When you find a great deal, particularly with airfare or hotel bookings, you won't want to sleep on them when they happen, as they're often in short supply, so you'll need to be ready to act when they appear.

Know your upcoming availability and travel budget so you can quickly know if a deal works for you. If you need to text eight people and wait for them to talk to their families, check their time-off schedules and ponder the trip, you could easily miss out.

Once those deals are released, you'll need to act within minutes (in some cases) to succeed in booking them, so having a general idea of where you want to go and possible dates you can travel will help make it possible to pull the trigger immediately.

Bottom line

Although Black Friday, Cyber Monday and Travel Tuesday deals aren't all live yet, you'll want to start planning now to get the top offers.

For now, start by opting in to the email lists for the travel companies you are most interested in and following them on social media (along with TPG). Keep your eyes peeled for any deals launched ahead of Black Friday itself.

Don't forget to use a credit card that will help you maximize your purchase, and make sure you browse online shopping portals, Amex Offers and similar sites so you can keep as much money in your pocket as possible this holiday season.

Sizing Up This Year’s Batch of Black Friday Travel Deals

The sales are out there, but they may not be quite so enticing. From hotels to cruises to organized tours, here’s what to expect.

black friday travel deals 2022

By Elaine Glusac

When it comes to Black Friday sales, travel companies usually rise to the occasion, knowing consumers are in buying mode. But now that travel is back with a vengeance — Airbnb, for example, just reported its most profitable quarter in company history — sales may not be as impressive this year.

“Travel companies that are trying to bounce back don’t have the incentive to offer a lot of deals, because everyone wants to travel,” said Julie Ramhold, a consumer analyst with DealNews.com , which compiles sales.

So, instead of rate cuts, hotel sales may take the form of added amenities or room credits, according to Jan Freitag, the national director of hospitality analytics at CoStar Group, a commercial real estate analyst. “Consumers don’t need to be enticed to travel, they’re doing quite well on their own,” Mr. Freitag said.

Still, Black Friday sales can encourage hotel occupancy in slow periods; they can also help fill cruise ships and tour groups on future trips, enabling operators to hold the line on prices later. This year, sales at more affordable accommodations target travelers feeling the inflationary pinch on their budgets.

From hotels to cruises, here’s what to expect and how to get the most out of travel deals offered during the Black Friday sales season, which generally takes place the last two weeks of November.

‘Watch everything like a hawk’

With few early-season deals, this may be the year of the pop-up sale. “Your best bet is to be ready to watch everything like a hawk for those two weeks,” Ms. Ramhold said.

Understand the terms before buying. Many bargains may be nonrefundable, require prepayment or have blackout dates. Promotions favor near-term travel, with the biggest discounts in slow periods.

In many cases, it will pay to act fast as the number of discounted bookings are limited. In New York City, for example, hotels participating in NYC Hotel Week , which runs Jan. 4 to Feb. 13, will offer rooms at 23 percent off while they last, starting Nov. 15.

Big-brand promotions

To remain competitive, most big hotel brands and online travel agencies participate in holiday promotions. For example, Hyatt is holding a sale at more than 950 of its properties globally, including the Thompson, Washington, D.C. , where 15 percent off bookings made from Nov. 23 to 29 start at $159 for stays from Dec. 22 to March 23 (use code CYBER).

The holiday sale at the online agency Priceline , Nov. 22 to 28, includes up to 20 percent off select hotels, 20 percent off rental cars and up to $3,000 in onboard cruise ship credits.

Between Nov. 21 and 29, Accor , which runs hotel brands including Fairmont and Sofitel, will offer up to 30 percent off rooms at North American hotels for stays through June. Loyalty members will get an additional 5 percent off (membership is free). Before the sale , rates at the Sofitel Mexico City Reforma start at $300.

Like larger chains, smaller groups such as Aqua-Aston Hospitality , which operates more than 25 hotels in Hawaii and Florida, aim to build their loyalty club enrollment, which is free, by offering 30 percent off rates from Nov. 25 to 28 to members. Prediscount rates at the Aqua Oasis in Waikiki start at $185 a night.

Robust hotel discounts

This season may be stingier, but some hotel deals will offer substantial discounts or allow for far-horizon travel.

Xanterra Travel Collection’s Black Friday promotion , Nov. 22 to 29, will discount stays up to 30 percent at several national park lodges in Yellowstone, Zion and other parks. Before the discount, rates in mid-February start at $222 at El Tovar Hotel on the Grand Canyon’s South Rim and $169 at Zion National Park Lodge.

At Alohilani Resort in Waikiki, rooms will be on sale at 35 percent off Nov. 21 to Dec. 2 for stays Dec. 1 through June. With the discount, nightly rates start at $269‌ and include complimentary beach rentals such as surfboards and umbrellas.

In Cabos San Lucas, Mexico, Solmar Hotels & Resorts will run a sale from Nov. 21 through Dec. 4 with discounts of up to 66 percent off stays through Dec. 20, 2023. Discounted rooms start at $190 a night at Playa Grande Resort and $435 at Grand Solmar Land’s End .

Among sales for stays throughout 2023, Virgin Hotels will offer 30 percent off Nov. 25 to Jan. 2. Boutique hotels in the Eat. Drink. Sleep portfolio will be 25 percent off (prediscount winter rates at Bellanca Hotel on Catalina Island, Calif., start at $179).

Bargain rates reduced

Though many hotels resist slashing prices, more affordable properties may seek to encourage travelers who are otherwise deterred by inflation.

Such promotions “remind customers that they do indeed deserve a break over the holidays, which they can afford to pay for without breaking the bank,” said Chekitan Dev, the Singapore Tourism Distinguished Professor at Cornell’s University’s Nolan School of Hotel Administration.

Known for efficiently designed rooms in cities like London, Amsterdam and New York, Yotel will offer 40 percent off rates booked Nov. 17 to Dec. 1 for stays through September. Nightly rates start at $195 prediscount.

In Portland, Ore., the hotel and hostel Lolo Pass has private rooms from $125 a night and dormitory beds from $35, which will be reduced by 40 percent Nov. 28 and 29 for stays through March (use code CYBER2022).

A group of redesigned motels and ski lodges, Bluebird by Lark is offering 25 percent discounts on bookings made Nov. 25 to 28 for travel through April. Before the discount, rates start at $171 at Bluebird Hunter Lodge in the Catskill Mountains.

Sentral hotels, which include co-working spaces designed to appeal to digital nomads, will offer up to 30 percent off stays booked Nov. 21 to 30 for stays through 2023. Nightly rates normally start at $102.

Travel in winter

Targeting slow periods, many deals aim to fill first-quarter vacancies. In New Orleans, ONE11 Hotel is offering up to 30 percent off rooms booked Nov. 25, normally from $210 a night, for stays through Feb. 1.

From Nov. 25 to 28, the Westin Indianapolis will offer 20 percent off rooms starting at $129 with the discount, plus a $15 food credit on stays Nov. 29 to March 31.

The Dean Hotel in Providence, R.I., and the Siren Hotel in Detroit will offer the third night free on a two-night stay booked Nov. 28 to Dec. 15 for travel Dec. 1 to Feb. 9 (nightly rates from $129 and $139, respectively).

The best carry-on luggage in 2022, plus impressive Black Friday luggage deals

By Leah Groth , Lily Rose

November 10, 2022 / 8:00 AM EST / Essentials

CBS Essentials is created independently of the CBS News editorial staff. We may receive commissions from some links to products on this page. Promotions are subject to availability and retailer terms.

carryon-luggage.jpg

Whether you're traveling for the holidays, work or play, a great carry-on bag can be a game changer. We found the best and top-rated carry-on luggage you can buy in 2022 -- some of which is on sale now ahead of Black Friday .

Top products in this article:

Monos Carry-On Plus, $225 (reduced from $283)

Rimowa original cabin carry-on, $1,400

Samsonite Omni 20" carry-on, $124 (reduced from $160)

Why invest in a new piece of carry-on luggage? For one, a carry-on bag may help save you money, since many airlines now charge fees for checked bags. And unlike checked luggage, carry-on bags also stay with you for the whole trip. They're a good place to stow medicine, a change of clothing and other travel essentials.

Some people prefer spinners over duffle bags, while others favor hard-shell polycarbonate or aluminum suitcases to softer luggage made of fabric. You might want to splurge on a suitcase with a built-in USB port, for charging your phone on the go. More carry-on features include telescopic handles, TSA-compliant locks and padded areas for electronics.

The main thing to keep in mind? Size. While carry-on luggage may vary in dimensions and shape, make sure to select a bag that is no larger than 22 inches by 14 inches by 9 inches, including handle and wheels. That's the standard carry-on size for most domestic airlines.

We selected a variety of great carry-on bags that fit in the overhead bin or under your seat -- all functional, aesthetically pleasing and complete with great features.

You can save big on some of these carry-on options ahead of Black Friday .

How to find the best summer travel deals

Here are some ways to save while planning your next summer getaway, by ale zimmermann and leslie gaydos • published may 31, 2024 • updated on may 31, 2024 at 5:31 pm.

As the summer travel season heats up, many of are dreaming of a vacation getaway.

Finding a good deal can seem like a daunting task. But with a few smart strategies, you can save big on your next flight.

“We're seeing that airfare has renormalized,” said Katy Nastro, a travel expert at Going.com. “The average price of airfare year over year is down about 6%, and it's down about 15% from where we saw that absolute, very hot, sky-high prices in this summer of 2022.”

Nastro tells us there are a couple things travelers should keep in mind while planning their next summer getaway.

Get New England news, weather forecasts and entertainment stories to your inbox. Sign up for NECN newsletters.

“We always say let the deal decide the destination. You can fly again into places like Cancun for $261 round trip from Boston,” Nastro said.

On Going.com, travelers can explore possibilities. By hitting the “let us choose” button – users will be able to pull up airfare deals, show you when they’re available and give you a price history of the flight. Be flexible with travel dates. Airfares are cheaper mid-week and consider flying into or out of nearby airports.

“Being flexible on the airports or cities that you're flying into can afford you some affordability when it comes to overall flight price,” Nastro said.

Consider using fare comparison websites like Google Flights or Skyscanner, which allows users to compare prices across multiple airlines and set up price alerts to monitor fare changes. On Skyscanner, users can choose “explore everywhere” as the destination and flexible dates to find the best deals.

Airline ‘Bark Air' lands inaugural dog-friendly flight in LA

“Often you can fly into a destination and then take a budget flight to get to your intended destination overall,” explained Nastro. “We call this the Greek islands trick, and it is especially beneficial for looking at those pricey flights over to Europe.”

Nastro also recommends mixing and matching airlines: “Don't just hyper focus on searching for round trips. Also, do your search two one ways and often flying in on one carrier and then out on another can help you save.”

And don’t forget about airline loyalty programs.

“If you do have a stash of points and miles, this is a really great time period to consider [using] even for one leg of your flight or one part of your itinerary. When cash prices are really high, you often get the best return on value in terms of using your points and miles,” said Nastro.

Here’s a lesser-known travel hack: clear a browser’s cookies when searching for flights. Airlines can sometimes track searches and can increase prices based on browsing history.

Avid online shoppers know that the holiday season really kicks off on Black Friday. Plenty of retailers have already rolled out their early Black Friday deals in anticipation of the shopping holiday, which lands on November 25, presenting the perfect opportunity to get a head start on gift-buying before the holiday madness goes into full effect.

Over at Amazon, shoppers can also score massive savings across the retailer’s site, giving you the chance to save up to 50 percent off on fashion, beauty, home, tech, and more. With hundreds of items included in the sale, we’d imagine that you might be feeling overwhelmed at the thought of scrolling through all the deals. That’s where I come in.

As someone who shops for a living, Black Friday is kind of like my Super Bowl, and I’ve been able to successfully narrow down the best deals. Below, you’ll find the items worth buying, plus certain ones that this travel writer loves and relies on when they’re on the go. If you’re using the sale to shop for presents, I’ve also included products that I think will make great gifts for travelers, outdoor enthusiasts, and basically anyone that likes to be cozy.

Keep scrolling to shop the 20 best early Black Friday deals at Amazon, according to this travel writer.

KN95 Masks

Holiday travel season is upon us, and if you’re like me and still prefer to fly with a face covering, you can use Amazon’s Early Black Friday sale to stock up on KN95 masks, which make great stocking stuffers for conscious travelers. This 50-pack from Levenis is half off and a personal favorite for their supportive fit that doesn’t budge when I’m on the move — even when I’m trying to get my bag from the overhead compartment or off the baggage carousel. And, it doesn’t irritate my ears after a long flight.

To buy: amazon.com , $15 (originally $30)

Compression Packing Cubes

I’ll be traveling from Los Angeles to New York for the holidays and plan on spending a couple weeks at home, which means I’ll have to bring lots of warm clothes. I’ll be picking up a set of these top-selling Gonex Compression Packing Cubes to optimize the space in my suitcase. The large packing cube is going to be reserved for sweaters and jeans, while the medium- and small-sized ones look perfect for workout clothes, pajamas, and loungewear. If you’re shopping for an overpacker, these travel accessories will help them save so much space in their luggage.

To buy: amazon.com , $24 (originally $33)

Shearling Jacket

Going back to New York also means that I’ll need a warm jacket. I’ve had my eyes on this Merokeety Shearling Jacket for months, and now’s the perfect time to finally get it since it’s less than $40. I love its relaxed fit and the fact that it has a big collar, which can be folded up and snapped into place if the weather gets too chilly. Plus it has two deep pockets and comes in 18 colors — I’m very into the army green one, but any one will make a great gift for that loved one who has fully embraced the loungewear trend.

To buy: amazon.com , $35 (originally $55)

Wool Crew Socks

These cozy merino wool crew socks will also be a central part of my home-for-the-holidays attire. And, I love that they can also be worn on hikes and other sporty outings if needed because of their moisture-wicking fabric. They’re also lined with fleece for extra warmth and specially designed not to fall down when you’re on the move. You can never have too many socks, right? But if you do, they’ll make a cozy stocking stuffer.

To buy: amazon.com , $18 with on-site coupon (originally $25)

Wearable Blanket

Okay, hear me out: The Comfy is the greatest invention ever. And it makes a great gift, especially for that person on your list that’s always cold or simply just loves to get cozy on the couch and watch Netflix. It also comes in handy on long car rides, camping trips, and any time you’ll need an extra blanket. There’s a reason why it has over 72,000 five-star ratings from Amazon shoppers.

To buy: amazon.com , from $50 (originally $55)

AirPods Case

My immediate family loves to get each other stocking stuffers, and this year, I’m going to get everyone a case for their Apple AirPods Pro , which are currently on sale ahead of Black Friday. This adorable one from Sonix comes in 18 eye-catching prints and patterns, so it will stand out in your purse, backpack, or briefcase when you’re on the go. And, it’s made from a durable plastic material to protect your earbuds, which is great if you’re like me and tend to drop your AirPods a lot. There’s a handy clip on the side so you can attach it to your keychain, belt loop, water bottle lid, and more so they’re always with you and secure when you need them.

To buy: amazon.com , $15 (originally $19)

Tech Organizer

Speaking of tech gifts, this electronic accessories organizer is a game-changer for commuters and anyone that travels for business — or people who are tired of having to untangle their smartphone, laptop, and tablet chargers when it’s their turn to go through TSA security. It’s available in three sizes, each equipped with multiple useful pockets and pouches to organize and safely store your chargers, headphones, cables, adapters, and more.

To buy: amazon.com , from $10 (originally $16)

Travel Pillow-Blanket

Perfect for any jetsetter, this TikTok-famous travel find is a comfy pillow and cozy blanket all in one thanks to its multitasking design; when not in use, the blanket folds into a snuggly case that doubles as a pillow. According to reviewers, its microfiber fleece material is “ incredibly soft ” and seriously rivals your trusty blankie. Plus, the cover features a convenient pass-through sleeve so you can attach it to your luggage handle to navigate busy airport terminals hassle-free.

To buy: amazon.com , $20 (originally $35)

Toiletry Bag

At the top of my holiday wish list this year is a new toiletry bag. Even though it’s for men, I’ve had my eyes on this Bagsmart dopp kit because of its multi-compartment design, which looks like it’s got enough pockets for all of my travel toiletries and skin care products (so it can easily make a thoughtful gift for any traveler). And, it’s got a wet/dry pocket, which already makes it outperform the ratty-old drugstore toiletry bag I’ve been using for years.

To buy: amazon.com , $20 (originally $27)

Folding Travel Mirror

If you need a thoughtful gift for a traveler, this folding LED mirror should be on your radar. During a friend’s bachelorette party, the Airbnb we stayed at didn’t have enough mirrors for the bridal party to use while getting ready for the day’s events. From then on, I vowed to always travel with some sort of compact or mirror to avoid having to wait in line for the bathroom. This folding travel mirror exceeded my expectations with its LED light border, which runs on a rechargeable battery, slim profile, and high-quality sharpness. It's lightweight enough to easily fit in your carry-on so you can do your makeup anywhere, anytime.

To buy: amazon.com , from $29 (originally $60)

Luggage Tag Set

After my carry-on had to be checked unexpectedly before a flight due to limited cabin space, I realized I had nothing to differentiate it from the dozens of other basic black suitcases on the baggage carousel. These brightly hued luggage tags are an easy fix, and I love that they have a special cover to keep your sensitive information secure and away from prying eyes. Did someone say stocking stuffer?

To buy: amazon.com , $9 for set of four (originally $15)

Curling Iron

Beauty lovers know that Amazon is always a goldmine for hot tools, and during its early Black Friday sale, you can get the top-rated Chi Spin-n-Curl Curling Iron, which makes it look like you just walked out of the salon , for up to 36 percent off. This deal is on my radar to give to a friend in need of a new curling wand, and according to reviewers, it can curl your entire head in just 10 minutes — even for shoppers that are admittedly “terrible at styling [their] own hair.” In addition to creating salon-level curls, it’s also travel-friendly .

To buy: amazon.com , from $70 (originally $110)

Fleece-lined Leggings

Baleaf is one of my favorite Amazon brands, and I’m a big fan of its Thermal Mock Neck Long-Sleeve Shirt , which comes in handy for running, hiking, and camping in cold weather. I want to achieve all-around warmth and coziness, so I’ll be picking up a pair of Baleaf’s Fleece-Lined Active Leggings while they’re nearly 20 percent off. They’ve racked up more than 17,000 five-star ratings from shoppers and checked all of my activewear boxes with their high-rise waistband, moisture-wicking capabilities, and flexible construction. I’m confident they’ll make a great gift for outdoorsy adventurers or fitness enthusiasts who need high-performing cold-weather gear.

To buy: amazon.com , $29 (originally $36)

Winter Boots

My grandmother only has one item on her wishlist this year, and it’s snow boots with good traction that she can easily slip onto her feet. After scrolling through Amazon’s hundreds of winter footwear options, I deemed these waterproof, fleece-lined boots as the best option. They’re made with a durable anti-skid outsole and feature a cushioned insole, so I know she’ll be secure and comfy when wearing them. Sizes range from 4 to 14 and shoppers have their choice of 14 colors.

To buy: amazon.com , from $40 (originally $49)

Fleece Vest

My grandfather, on the other hand, is very much singing the “don’t get me anything” tune this year. But despite his best efforts, my sisters and I will still be getting him something. He’s always a fan of warm, outdoorsy clothes, and I think he’ll be excited to open this fleece vest from Columbia. It has a high collar silhouette, which he’ll love because his house gets quite drafty, and it’s strategically designed so that the wearer has full range of motion, so he’ll be comfortable and able to layer it on top of his favorite sweaters (and sport it under his winter jacket). The vest comes in 17 colors and sizes range from S to 6XL.

To buy: amazon.com , from $30 (originally $45)

Nonstick Pans Set

Another family member that my sisters and I have trouble finding the perfect gift for is my mom, but I think we’re going to get her a set of new nonstick frying pans to replace her old ones. This 10-inch and 12-inch duo from AllClad just went on sale for 20 percent off and has earned more than 8,500 five-star ratings from Amazon shoppers, many of whom applauded their nonstick, scratch-resistant coating, durable construction, and versatile design.

To buy: amazon.com , $80 (originally $100)

Pasta Bowls

Still on theme with home and kitchen items, I’ll be picking up this best-selling pasta bowl set while they’re up to 42 percent off. They’re going to be part of my gift for my sister, who has been on the hunt for a quality set for her new apartment. According to reviewers , the plates are “sturdy and very durable,” as well as perfect for everyday use. One shopper also raved that they “can go straight from the microwave to the table,” and another Amazon customer highlighted that they “wash up great in the dishwasher.”

To buy: amazon.com , $29 ($50)

Camping Table

I actually got this Coleman camping table for my friend’s birthday in October, and she loved it so much that I think everyone needs to know about it. And it’s on sale for 25 percent off. After taking it for a test run, she said that it was the talk of the campsite because of how sturdy and surprisingly spacious it was. My friend was also happy to report that it was incredibly easy to set up (all you basically have to do is click the table part onto the stabilizing bars and then secure it all into place) and lightweight to carry.

To buy: amazon.com , $45 (originally $60)

Loungewear Set

While still on the topic of gifts, this Zesica loungewear set makes a great one with its trendy cropped sweatshirt-sleek joggers combo and fun color options. It’s made with a comfy polyester-spandex blend so it will have a soft, lightweight feel and offer just the right amount of stretch for optimal comfort. It will be your new travel uniform or your new go-to set for running errands or laidback nights on the couch. In fact, I think I might pick one up for myself…

To buy: amazon.com , $44 with on-site coupon (originally $60)

Weighted Blanket

After wanting one for years , this seems like the perfect opportunity to finally buy this weighted blanket now that it’s up to 50 percent off. This best-selling option has a cozy, microfiber construction and is filled with evenly dispersed glass beads to give wearers that secure feeling. It’s available in multiple sizes and weight options so you can find the one that best suits you and your preferences. I’m confident that whoever you give this to will instantly fall in love.

To buy: amazon.com , from $25 (originally $50)

Ukraine-Russia war latest: French instructors in Ukraine would be 'legitimate target', Lavrov says on visit to West Africa

Sergei Lavrov, the Russian foreign minister, is on a tour in West Africa as part of a diplomatic push by the isolated Kremlin to forge new ties around the world. Meanwhile, an upcoming summit on Ukraine will reportedly aim to create a pathway for Russian officials to join future talks.

We're pausing our coverage for today but we will be back tomorrow with more updates.

Here is a rundown of the key developments today:

  • Ukraine has used American weapons to strike inside Russia, according to an unnamed Western source;
  • Joe Biden will hold talks with Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Normandy this week during his visit celebrating the 80th anniversary of D-Day;
  • Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov has been visiting countries in Africa as part of an ongoing diplomatic offensive from the Kremlin;
  • A former British defence attache has warned Russia's disinformation campaigns are "only going to get worse" as EU parliament elections and the Olympics approach.

You can scroll back through the blog to read all our updates from today.

A 26-year-old man of dual Ukrainian-Russian nationality has been arrested in possession of explosives after some of them detonated in a hotel room north of Paris.

The man was treated by fire-fighters after he "suffered significant burns following an explosion," on Monday, according to a source.

A source at the French anti-terror prosecutor's office said they had taken charge of the case and opened an investigation on suspicion of a terrorist conspiracy.

A subsequent search of his room led to the discovery of products and materials intended for the manufacture of explosive devices, the source added.

France's domestic spy agency DGSI is handling the investigation, Reuters reports.

Ukraine has used American weapons to strike inside Russia in recent days, according to a Western official.

The weapons were used under recently approved guidance from Joe Biden, allowing US arms to be used to strike inside Russia in defence of Kharkiv, Ukraine's second city.

The official spoke to Reuters on condition of anonymity.

Mr Biden's directive allows for US-supplied weapons to be used to strike Russian forces that are attacking or preparing to attack.

It does not change US policy that directs Ukraine not to use American-provided tactical or long-range missiles and other munitions to make offensive strikes inside Russia, US officials said.

Ukrainian officials had stepped up calls on the US to allow Kyiv's forces to defend themselves against attacks originating from Russian territory.

Kharkiv is 12 miles from the Russian border and has recently come under intensified Russian attack.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has arrived in Qatar for talks with the state's emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.

The Ukrainian president said on X that he planned to discuss Qatar's participation in a process of returning Ukrainian children abducted by Russia, as well as bilateral economic and security issues.

In March, Ukraine and Russia exchanged six children via Qatari mediation.

Earlier this week, Mr Zelenskyy made a surprise trip to the Philippines to thank the country for agreeing to participate in the upcoming peace summit being held in Switzerland.

A Russian-American man has been sentenced by a St Petersburg court to three-and-a-half years in prison on charges of "rehabilitating Nazism".

Yuri Malev was arrested in December over social media posts in which he was alleged to have denigrated the Saint George's ribbon, a Russian military symbol of valour.

One post reportedly contained "obscene language" and another other showed a picture of a corpse wearing the ribbon, captioned: "How to wear the Saint George's ribbon correctly".

The court in St Petersburg said this showed disrespect for society and insulted the memory of the Great Patriotic War (the Russian name for the Second World War).

Malev admitted guilt, according to the court.

He was a graduate of the law faculty of St Petersburg University and had lived in the United States since 1991, according to independent Russian language media.

Baza, a Telegram channel with links to Russian authorities, said Malev was a resident of Brooklyn, New York.

He reportedly entered Russia by bus from Estonia two weeks before he was arrested.

Moscow routinely refers to the government in Kyiv as a "Nazi regime", despite Volodymyr Zelenskyy being Jewish.

Ukraine has been allowed to shoot down Moscow's planes over Russian territory with American weapons since the war broke out, the White House has clarified.

Ukraine "can shoot down Russian aeroplanes that pose an impending threat", national security spokesman John Kirby said.

"And they have. They have since the beginning of the war."

The clarification was given due to confusion over Washington’s recent decision to relax rules on US-supplied weapons striking military targets on Russian soil.

Joe Biden gave authorisation for the strikes on a limited basis to help Kyiv defend itself against Kremlin forces advances towards Kharkiv.

Mr Kirby said he could not confirm reports that Ukraine had used US-supplied weapons on Russian territory for the first time.

He told reporters: "We're just not in a position on a day-to-day basis of knowing exactly what the Ukrainians are firing at what.

"It's certainly at a tactical level. So, I can't confirm that. I can tell you that they understand the guidance that they've been given."

By Ivor Bennett, Moscow correspondent

Sergei Lavrov's trip to Africa is part of an ongoing diplomatic offensive by the Kremlin, running in parallel to its conflict in Ukraine.

Isolated from the West, Russia is trying to forge new ties and has found fertile ground in Africa.

There have been several coups in recent years that have ushered in anti-Western military juntas.

US troops were kicked out of Niger, for example, while the French had to leave Burkina Faso.

In both cases, Moscow was quick to move in as the new security guarantors, and their efforts clearly don't stop there.

This is the veteran foreign minister Lavrov's ninth visit to the continent since Russia invaded Ukraine.

Kenya, Burundi and South Africa were among his stops last year; this week it's Guinea, Congo and Burkina Faso.

In return for military support, Russia gains an ally - they may not support the war, but they won't criticise it either.

The Kremlin portrays this as the formation of a new world order, free from Western imperialism and hegemony.

But others say Russia are the neo-colonialists, painting this as a blatant attempt to expand their sphere of influence.

Ukraine's first deputy foreign minister has held talks with his Chinese counterpart in an effort to increase cooperation between the two countries, the Ukrainian ministry said.

Ukraine's Andriy Sybiha also told Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong that he hoped China would participate in a Ukraine-led peace summit later in June.

Mr Sybiha added that it could be "a good opportunity to make a practical contribution to achieving a just and lasting peace", the Ukrainian foreign ministry said.

A report earlier today (see 7.40am post) said that June's peace summit opened doors to "limited talks with Russia" - despite Russian officials not being invited.

Earlier we brought you news that Ukraine said it had shot down 22 of the 27 Shahed-type drones launched by Russia overnight (see 8.04am post).

Now photographs have emerged of the aftermath of one of the strikes.

Firefighters work to put out the massive blaze in the Poltava region.

As Russia opens a new front on Ukraine's northeastern border, the war has entered an important phase.

Readers have been sending in their questions to our senior correspondents and military experts for their take on the changing battlefield environment.

Today, Trevor Prew asks:

Are there any signs of an underground Russian resistance operating inside Russia, or can Russians openly criticize Putin, as long as they don't protest on the streets or mention the war.

Russia correspondent Ivor Bennett says:

In a word, no.

There wasn't much opposition to speak of in Russia even before the war, but now there's nothing left whatsoever.

All of Putin's political opponents are either exiled, jailed or dead, as are those with any connections to Alexei Navalny.

Those who dare to speak out are silenced.

At one end, are the long-time critics and opposition activists, like Vladimir Kara-Murza, the dual Russian-British national opposition who is serving a 25-year prison sentence for treason.

But at the other end are ordinary Russians, like the former schoolteacher Nikita Tushkanov sentenced to 5.5 years for comments he made online about Putin.

The crackdown on dissent seemingly knows no bounds and it's created a climate in which those who oppose the war are terrified to speak out.

They do exist - as evidenced by the huge turnout for Navalny's funeral. But that was a unique moment and is unlikely to be repeated anytime soon.
