Best Western Rewards members must have the necessary number of points to complete a free night based on the hotel’s individual point tier level. Search for hotels using your Best Western Rewards points. Should you not have the required amount of points for the stay upon arrival, you will be required to pay the prevailing rate.

Free Room Nights are fully transferable and can be used at any Best Western brand lodging establishment in Asia, Australia, Europe, Central America, North America and South America that accepts the point value designated with the Free Room Night, subject to capacity controls and lodging establishment room availability, which may limit the availability of rooms offered at Best Western hotels. Search for hotels using your Best Western Rewards points.

Best Western Rewards: How to earn and redeem points, elite status and more

Andrew Kunesh

Editor's Note

Best Western Rewards remains relatively unknown in the points and miles world. The program doesn't have any major credit card transfer partners , and its cobranded credit cards aren't on most travelers' radar. But if you find yourself staying at Best Western properties frequently for work or pleasure, there's plenty of value to be had in the program.

Best Western Rewards points are surprisingly valuable if you travel to Europe , Asia and specific parts of the U.S. and Canada. While Best Western isn't known for luxury hotels, it does have a suite of higher-end, boutique-focused brands like the BW Signature Collection, the BW Premier Collection and the millennial-focused Vīb.

You can earn and redeem Best Western Rewards points at these and other hotels in Best Western's broad portfolio. Here, we'll cover earning and redeeming points, travel partners, elite status and everything else you need to know about the Best Western Rewards loyalty program.

Best Western Rewards hotel brands

Best Western Rewards currently covers 19 hotel brands, ranging from the budget-friendly Sure Stay to the boutique WorldHotels Collection:

  • @Home by Best Western
  • Aiden by Best Western
  • Best Western
  • Best Western Plus
  • Best Western Premier
  • BW Premier Collection
  • BW Signature Collection
  • Executive Residency by Best Western
  • Sadie Best Western
  • SureStay Plus
  • SureStay Signature Collection
  • SureStay Studio
  • WorldHotels Crafted

How to earn Best Western Rewards points

best western travel card balance

There aren't as many ways to earn Best Western Rewards points as there are to earn World of Hyatt , Marriott Bonvoy or Hilton Honors points. However, you can still earn points by staying at Best Western hotels and using cobranded credit cards , as well as through select retail partners.

Here's a look at all of the ways you can earn Best Western Rewards points.

Stay at Best Western properties

As with most hotel loyalty programs, you'll earn Best Western Rewards points based on your elite status and how much you spend on a hotel room. Most Best Western hotels award 10 points per dollar spent (before taxes and fees); at an Executive Residency, SureStay Studio or @Home by Best Western property, you will earn 5 points per dollar.

So, if you stay at a Best Western property for three nights with a pretax nightly rate of $100, you'll earn 3,000 points on your stay if you're a Blue (basic) member.

If you have Best Western Rewards elite status, you'll earn a percentage bonus on all Best Western stays. The higher your status, the more points you'll earn on your paid stays. Here's how many bonus points each status tier earns:

  • Platinum: 15%
  • Diamond: 30%
  • Diamond Select: 50%

If you are a top-tier Diamond Select member and spend $100 per night on a three-night trip, you'd earn a total of 4,500 Best Western Rewards points.

One thing to note: You can only earn Best Western Rewards points and use your elite benefits on Best Western stays you book directly with Best Western; stays booked through Expedia , Orbitz, Chase Travel℠ and other online travel agencies are not eligible. So, make sure that you book all your Best Western stays directly if you want to earn points and elite status. Oftentimes, you'll get the same (or better) rate than if you booked through an OTA.

Spend on Best Western cobranded credit cards

Best Western has two U.S. cobranded credit cards issued by First National Bank of Omaha. Both of these cards have a welcome bonus, earn bonus points on Best Western purchases and include free Best Western status. Here's a look at both of the cards and their respective welcome bonuses:

  • Best Western Rewards® Premium Mastercard® ($89 annual fee): Earn 80,000 bonus points after spending $3,000 in your first three billing cycles after the account is open; earn an additional 40,000 bonus points when you spend at least $5,000 every 12 billing cycles. In addition to these bonus points, you'll enjoy automatic Platinum status and earn 10 points per dollar on Best Western purchases (in addition to the points you earn with your elevated Best Western status). So you'll effectively earn 21.5 Best Western Rewards points per dollar for stays you pay for with your Best Western Rewards Premium Mastercard. This is because you earn 11.5 points per dollar spent with your Best Western Platinum status and another 10 when you pay with your card.
  • Best Western Rewards® Mastercard® (no annual fee): Earn 40,000 bonus points when you spend $1,000 in the first three billing cycles after the account is open; earn another 20,000 points when you spend $5,000 every 12 billing cycles. You'll get automatic Gold status and earn an additional 3 points per dollar on Best Western purchases with your card, netting you a total of 14 points per dollar on Best Western stays.

The information for the Best Western Rewards Premium Mastercard and Best Western Rewards Mastercard has been collected independently by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

These cards could be good options for someone who frequently stays at Best Western hotels and really values having instant status perks and elevated earnings on Best Western purchases. However, travelers who switch hotel chains frequently may have better luck with a card that earns transferable points, like the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card or the Chase Sapphire Reserve® . While they don't come with elite status, these cards earn bonus points on all hotel brands and other travel, and you can transfer your points to a number of hotel and airline partners for exceptional redemptions . That's why TPG values Chase Ultimate Rewards points at 2.05 cents each, compared to Best Western Rewards points, which are valued at 0.6 cents each.

Order flowers or wine for more bonus points

While Best Western doesn't have a shopping portal or a dining program, it partners with Teleflora and Vinesse Wines to award points when you order flowers or wine online. You can earn 1,250 Best Western Rewards points on each Teleflora flower delivery order and up to 12,500 points on a wine subscription (see Best Western's website for details). Be sure to do your research and determine if these services are worth the money. Likewise, compare earnings with other hotel and airline loyalty programs to see if you can earn more points elsewhere.

Rent cars through Best Western

Best Western has partnerships with several major rental car companies like Budget and National to give members discounts on car rentals. These partnerships also allow you to earn Best Western Rewards points on car rentals; some earn on a per-dollar basis, while others award a flat number of points per rental. You can view all of Best Western's partnerships on its website and see if renting a car through Best Western makes sense for your travel plans.

Just note that you can't use corporate codes, and — in many cases — you won't earn rental car points when you book through Best Western. Before you book, make sure that the Best Western Rewards points you'd earn offset any other points or discounts you're eligible for.

How to redeem Best Western Rewards points

The most valuable way to redeem your points is by booking free nights at Best Western properties worldwide. There are other redemption options available, like gift cards and merchandise, but you'll generally get a much lower value for your points when you redeem for these.

For example, a $10 Best Western gift card will set you back 2,000 Best Western Rewards points, giving you a value of 0.5 cents per point — lower than TPG's valuation of 0.6 cents per point. We recommend avoiding these redemptions and using your points for Best Western award stays instead.

Book award stays with Best Western Rewards points

Best Western doesn't publish an award chart; award pricing varies by hotel and when you book. According to Best Western, free nights range from 5,000 to 70,000 points per night, and we've found that hotels with higher cash rates generally cost more points.

Viewing award-night pricing is simple. Just head to the Best Western website, enter your search criteria and check the "Use Rewards Points" box.

best western travel card balance

When your search results load, you will see all Best Western hotels near your destination alongside their points cost. When you find a hotel you like, click the yellow "View Rooms" button to see all available rooms and rates.

best western travel card balance

You can use Best Western Rewards points to book standard and premium rooms, with premium rooms costing more points. For example, at the Aiden Denver West/Golden you can book a king room for 32,000 points per night or a suite for 36,000 points.

One word of caution, though: Always check the cash rate before you book an award night. Many of Best Western's hotels are meant to be budget-friendly and have low cash rates. Instead of using your Best Western Rewards points to book cheap nights, you're usually better off paying the cash rate and saving your points to cover a more expensive stay in the future. Best Western points never expire, so there's no rush to use them — you can save your points for a time when they'll give you the most value.

The best hotels to book with Best Western Rewards points

best western travel card balance

Best Western has thousands of properties worldwide, but some of them offer better value for points redemptions than others. As a general rule of thumb, you'll usually get the best value for your points when you redeem them at high-end properties during special events and holidays.

If you need a bit of inspiration on how to use your points, look no further. Here's a look at some interesting Best Western Rewards redemptions.

The Cartwright Hotel - Union Square in San Francisco

Planning a trip to San Francisco and want to stay in the heart of the action? The Cartwright Hotel is a BW Premier Collection property in Union Square, putting you within walking distance of all of San Francisco's main attractions. And since you're close to the Powell Street BART stop, the rest of the Bay Area — including the airports — is easily accessible.

Weekend nights hover around $170 or 28,000 Best Western Rewards points, for a value of 0.6 cents per point, right on par with TPG's valuations.

Best Western Grant Park Hotel in Chicago

The Grant Park Hotel in Chicago gives you access to everything Chicago has to offer. It's just steps away from Grant Park and the Art Institute of Chicago and a quick L ride from the Magnificent Mile shopping district. Because of this central location, the Grant Park Hotel is a wonderful choice for Windy City first-timers.

Award nights start at 40,000 points for weekend nights in the summer. These rooms cost around $275, providing a solid value of 0.68 cents per point.

Best Western Plus Hotel Sydney Opera in Paris

The City of Light is home to many Best Western properties, including the conveniently located Best Western Plus Sydney Opera. This hotel is within walking distance of the Place de la Concorde and Opera Garnier, and the Louvre and other major Parisian attractions are just a quick metro or taxi ride away.

Basic rooms start around $250 per night in summer. Or you can use 36,000 Best Western Rewards points for a value of about 0.69 cents per point, making this an excellent redemption option.

Transfer Best Western Rewards points to airlines

best western travel card balance

You can also transfer your Best Western Rewards points to nine airline programs, including programs with hard-to-earn miles like Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan and Asiana Club. This won't give you as much value as booking award nights, but it can be a good way to top up airline account balances if you're going for a specific award ticket.

Best Western has a different transfer ratio for each airline partner:

Again, these transfers are not the best use of Best Western Rewards points, but they may be helpful if you find yourself a few miles short of a specific award ticket.

It's also worth noting that you can choose to earn airline miles instead of Best Western Rewards points on Best Western stays. Best Western provides more options for earning miles than transferring them; you can earn miles at the above airlines and several others, including United Airlines, Virgin Atlantic and Turkish Airlines. See Best Western's website for the number of miles you can earn with each airline. To earn miles this way, go to the "Profile & Preferences" section of your account, scroll down to "Earning Preference," choose your preferred airline partner and enter your frequent flyer number.

Best Western Rewards elite status

best western travel card balance

The Best Western Rewards program has five membership levels: Blue, Gold, Platinum, Diamond and Diamond Select. Points never expire, and all members have access to a dedicated reservations line and can redeem points on Best Western stays with no blackout dates.

You'll earn elite status based on the number of qualifying nights you stay in a calendar year. These are the qualification requirements for each status tier:

  • Blue: Entry level
  • Gold: 5 nights
  • Platinum: 7 nights
  • Diamond: 15 nights
  • Diamond Select: 25 nights

Award night redemptions count toward elite status, so if you use your points for a free stay, those nights will help you work toward the next membership tier.

Elite members also earn bonus points on all Best Western stays — this bonus is based on the base rate of your stays (the total bill minus taxes):

Besides earning points faster, there are some perks to Best Western elite status. Members with Gold or higher status receive a complimentary water bottle (based on location) and 500 bonus points during each stay. Those with Platinum status or above can enjoy early check-in and late checkout upon request.

Status match from another hotel program

Have status with another hotel chain? You can take advantage of Best Western's Status Match...No Catch program to match your existing hotel status to Best Western for free. We recommend taking advantage of this match just in case you end up staying at a Best Western property during your travels.

To request a status match, fill out this form on the Best Western website . Members who reach a new tier through status matching in 2024 will maintain that tier through March 31, 2026.

Bottom line

While Best Western's properties won't make for the most aspirational award bookings, your Best Western Rewards points can come in handy on road trips, for stays in small cities and other times when you need a place to sleep for the night. And since Best Western Rewards points never expire, you can accrue them without worrying about earning more points or redeeming them at a specific time. We highly recommend enrolling in the program even if you don't stay at Best Western properties often.

The bottom line, pros and cons, detailed review, compare to other cards, benefits and perks, drawbacks and considerations, how to decide if it's right for you.

The card's lack of an annual fee and the status it grants you are nice features. But for luxury perks or greater value on rewards, look elsewhere.

The Best Western Rewards® Mastercard® — issued by a division of First National Bank of Omaha — is a frugal choice that offers rewards and perks for Best Western loyalists. But the value of those rewards falls short in comparison to the offerings of some other no-annual-fee hotel credit cards and general travel credit cards.

This card does come with a sign-up bonus, and you'll also get automatic Gold elite status, which means additional incentives like 10% bonus points per stay and room upgrades (when available). And with 4,300 Best Western properties in over 100 countries worldwide, you won't have much trouble finding places to use those perks.

But if Best Western isn't always your first choice for travel, plenty of other cards can offer more value and flexibility.

If you are a Best Western devotee, you might do better with this card's cousin, the Best Western Rewards® Premium Mastercard® . It has an annual fee of $89 , but it offers more robust rewards and perks (although neither card offers a free anniversary night, a common perk among many hotel cards).

Redemption options include nights with Best Western, airline miles, gift cards, merchandise and charitable donations. The value of points varies depending on which option you choose.

NerdWallet values Best Western points at 0.7 cent each. This is a baseline value, drawn from real-world data, not a maximized value. In other words, you should aim for award redemptions that offer 0.7 cent or more in value from your Best Western points.

Discover it® Miles

$0 annual fee

The Best Western Rewards® Mastercard® packs reasonable value for a $0 -annual-fee credit card. Its relative, the Best Western Rewards® Premium Mastercard® , offers better benefits and perks, but it has a $89 annual fee.

Here's how the two cards stack up:

Solid sign-up bonus

The card’s sign-up bonus can be enough to jump-start your travel goals: 40,000 points when you spend $1,000 in the first 3 billing cycles after the account is opened. 20,000 points when you spend $5,000 every 12 billing cycles. According to Best Western's website, you can get a free night starting at 5,000 points, so this bonus alone could snag you a multiple-night stay. However, the company also notes that the range is from 5,000 to 70,000 points per night, so it will depend on which Best Western property or location you choose for redemption.

Automatic Gold status

By becoming a cardholder, you automatically get bumped up to Gold elite status. Members at this level receive 10% points bonus, no blackout dates and other perks. To reach this tier without the card, you would have to accumulate eligible stays or nights, or earn 5,000 points from eligible stays only. With the Best Western Rewards® Mastercard® , you don’t have to put in that work to reap the status benefits.

Other cards offer greater rewards value

True, the Best Western Rewards® Mastercard® offers a hefty number of points for spending with the hotel chain: 3 points per $1 spent on Best Western stays, on top of the 10 base points you already earn as a Best Western Rewards program member, on top of the 10% points bonus at the Gold status level. But general travel credit cards will earn you points that are both more valuable (worth at least a penny apiece) and more flexible, meaning they can be used on things other than stays with a single hotel brand.

A good example is the $0 -annual-fee Wells Fargo Autograph℠ Card . It earns an unlimited 3 points per dollar spent on:

Restaurants.

Travel and transit.

Gas stations and EV charging stations.

Popular streaming services.

Select phone plans.

The card earns 1 point per dollar on all other purchases, and it comes with a solid sign-up bonus: Earn 20,000 bonus points when you spend $1,000 in purchases in the first 3 months - that's a $200 cash redemption value.

You’re not loyal to Best Western

Earning rewards will be a slow process if you don’t frequently stay at Best Western properties, and redemption values are a mixed bag, depending on what you choose. If you prefer a card with more flexibility, consider the Discover it® Miles credit card. It has a $0 annual fee and earns 1.5 miles per $1 spent. You can redeem miles for cash back or as credit toward travel purchases made with your card. No matter how you redeem, 1 mile equals 1 cent.

You want some interest-free breathing room

Like many hotel cards, the Best Western Rewards® Mastercard® does not offer an interest-free promotional period. If you’re looking to finance a vacation or your purchases, the aforementioned Discover it® Miles would again be a good pick.

The Best Western Rewards® Mastercard® is right for you if you want to earn automatic Gold elite status for a $0 annual fee. If you aren't loyal to a particular hotel chain, however, and you want flexibility in how you redeem your rewards, another travel credit card can offer more value.

To see how your options stack up, visit NerdWallet's roundup of the best credit card offers .

alternate-pick-product-card-image

Get 1.5 miles per dollar on all purchases. Miles can be redeemed for credit on your statement against a wide variety of travel expenses. There's a $0 annual fee, plus a bonus offer for new cardholders: UNLIMITED BONUS: Unlimited Mile-for-Mile match for all new cardmembers—only from Discover. Discover gives you an unlimited match of all the Miles you’ve earned at the end of your first year. You could turn 35,000 Miles to 70,000 Miles. There’s no signing up, no minimum spending or maximum rewards. Just a Miles-for-Miles match.

Methodology.

NerdWallet reviews credit cards with an eye toward both the quantitative and qualitative features of a card. Quantitative features are those that boil down to dollars and cents, such as fees, interest rates, rewards (including earning rates and redemption values) and the cash value of benefits and perks. Qualitative factors are those that affect how easy or difficult it is for a typical cardholder to get good value from the card. They include such things as the ease of application, simplicity of the rewards structure, the likelihood of using certain features, and whether a card is well-suited to everyday use or is best reserved for specific purchases. Our star ratings serve as a general gauge of how each card compares with others in its class, but star ratings are intended to be just one consideration when a consumer is choosing a credit card.
