I have arrived back from my Southern African holiday……a customised trip organised by The Africa Safari Co., a trip through South Africa, Zimbabwe, Botswana and into Namibia.

Everything worked like clockwork, a true testament to The Africa Safari Co. and their contacts, and their knowledge of Africa. Every guide was there on time, and highly visible, to greet me at the many meeting points throughout the journey. Every booking accurately made, and a well documented itinerary. The itinerary selected by them was varied, engaging, and full of the excitement and mystery promised in all the stories, movies, books and fantasies we all have as children, while growing up, and as adults.

Thank you The Africa Safari Co. …… a truly memorable time.

Terre Wohling

My first time to Africa and The Africa Safari Co did not disappoint! I explored Namibia and the staff on the ground there, the transport, accommodation & activities were all exceptional! If you are considering an African adventure most definitely use The Africa Safari Co!

We spent 3 weeks in Africa, and 2 of those were travelling with The Africxa Safari Co. We started with 3 days in South Africa. Picked up at the airport on time, taken to our accommodation. Spent the next two days being shown around with a wonderful guide. Off we went then to Botswana, for another 3 days. We stayed at Kasane at the Bakwena Lodge. OMG this place is AMAZING! We saw all of the big 5 other than rhinos, within the first two days! We then went to Victoria Falls and yet again we were blessed with great accommodation and I’ll definitely be back and highly recommend this company!

We have just returned from a wonderful safari in Kenya. The organisation of the tour by The Africa Safari Co. meant that nothing was left to chance and all we had to do was enjoy our holiday. Thankyou The Africa Safari Co.

I have travelled twice with The Africa Safari Co. The first in 2015 when we went to Uganda Gorilla & Chimp Trekking and again in 2017 to Tanzania & Kenya. With 25 years experience in Africa their product knowledge is amazing and the staff really know their stuff. When putting itineraries together they offer great suggestions to work within time and budget restrictions. The local ground operators have been fantastic, very friendly with a great knowledge of the game and areas we travelled. If you are looking for an amazing Africa experience don’t look any further than The Africa Safari Co.

I just wanted to let you know, George and Ana have returned from their honeymoon, and they said it was everything they hoped for and more!

They were so happy with everything, and I’d like to thank you and Susie for all your recommendations and expertise in putting this together.

Your documentation was also the best of any I’ve ever received.

So a big thank you and I look forward to putting my next Africa booking with you!

Tailor-Made Tours & Safaris

From the signature savannahs of East Africa teeming with plains game, marvellous landmarks of ancient civilisations, tropical white sand beaches along the warm Indian Ocean, endless deserts with sand dunes burning red at sunrise, lush rainforests echoing with the calls of birds and primates, vibrant cities alive with a colourful melting pot of cultures – there is nowhere else on the planet with such incredible natural beauty and rich cultural traditions as Africa. Whether you join a  scheduled tour  or discover your own Africa on a  tailor-made trip , a visit to this magical continent is guaranteed to take your breath away.

So many of the world’s great beasts call Africa home so a trip to Africa is not complete without a photographic wildlife safari. Embark on a spectacular African Safari to search for the well-known “Big 5” — the lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo — which were originally grouped together for being the most difficult to hunt but are now simply thrilling to watch in their natural habitat. However, there are hundreds of other animal and bird species to encounter in Africa, each playing an important role in its local ecosystem.

Don’t forget to tick off the “Ugly 5” – the warthog, hyena, vulture, wildebeest and Marabou Stork. Or the “Little 5” who are named in contradiction to their Big counterparts and encourage safari goers to look at the smaller species present in the African wilderness – the ant lion, leopard tortoise, elephant shrew, rhino beetle, and buffalo weaver. And if you’re very lucky you may see an elusive member of the “Shy 5” – the porcupine, bat-eared fox, aardvark, meerkat, and aardwolf. Witnessing exotic wildlife up close and personal in their natural habitat on a true African Safari is the experience of a lifetime!

Contact Eclipse Travel today to plan your perfect African Tour. We’ll tailor your holiday experience according to your preferences, time, and budget to take you on a holiday you’ll never forget.

South Africa

South africa safari tours and holidays.

South Africa holidays are great for all ages due to the diverse range of activities, landscapes, cultures and wildlife. In South Africa, the sky-piercing peaks of the Drakensberg Mountains blend seamlessly with the verdant plains of the Highveld. In the north-western fringes of the country loom the vast expanses of the Kalahari Desert. The difference between landscapes is extreme, but it’s only the start of the diversity of this great nation.

australia tour africa

South Africa also boasts an expansive coastline, continuing unbroken for nearly 3,000 kilometres between Namibia and Mozambique, reaching across two oceans - the Atlantic and the Indian. It's little surprise then, that with such a variety of landscapes, South Africa is home to a broad array of wildlife, some of which cannot be seen anywhere else on Earth. On a South African safari with Bench Africa, you can experience South Africa from a unique angle - read on to find out more!

Why should I book a South Africa holiday?

Even though South Africa is largely perceived as the most modern of the African nations, that doesn't mean its lush savannah is in danger of being buried under concrete any time soon, or that your wildlife photos will feature an unwelcome background of stark, grey buildings. Far from it - South Africa is indeed an advanced nation, but drive a few kilometres out of any town or city and you'll find yourself right in the heart of the Rainbow Nation's countryside. This is where you can experience a true South Africa safari.

Take Kruger National Park , for example. It's one of the oldest game reserves on the continent, and is positively enormous, covering over 19,000 beautiful square kilometres. As if that isn't enough to spark your wanderlust, consider this - there are almost 150 types of mammals, more than 500 kinds of birds, and no ...

Take Kruger National Park , for example. It's one of the oldest game reserves on the continent, and is positively enormous, covering over 19,000 beautiful square kilometres. As if that isn't enough to spark your wanderlust, consider this - there are almost 150 types of mammals, more than 500 kinds of birds, and no less than 114 species of reptiles. That's without even mentioning the 34 different kinds of amphibian and 49 types of fish that call Kruger their home - and that’s only one of South Africa’s safari parks!

Top South Africa activities

Of course, South Africa is a nation that's simply overflowing with potential for wildlife adventures. However, there is so much more to this South Africa than just safari - take a look at these for size, but remember, these are just two activities to experience. There are countless more South Africa adventures that the experienced team at Bench can work into a customised South Africa tour for you.

Take a wander up Table Mountain

No South Africa tour is complete without a trip to Cape Town to see Table Mountain! The aptly named Table Mountain features a summit that's completely flat, and is known as one of the New Seven Wonders of Nature. No matter whether you are at the top or bottom of Table Mountain, you'll experience extraordinary scenery from either point. At the bottom, stand in vibrant Cape Town to get a photograph with an unrivalled backdrop, and from the top, take in the panoramic view of the city and harbour.

Take the Grand Tour

One of our most popular tours is our Luxury Signature Safari. Last year, in celebration of Bench Africa's 50th anniversary (that's half a century!) we launched our South Africa Signature Safari Special - to save you on your luxury South Africa holiday with Bench Africa. Our experts have carefully hand-crafted this Signature South Africa itinerary. The circuit suits the discerning traveller, visiting some of the most scenic and idyllic places in South Africa. You will stay in luxury boutique properties throughout - ensuring you experience the highest level of comfort and service.

Another very popular South Africa safari is our Makutsi Classic Safari . This 7-day safari is perfect for a range of travellers looking for an affordable safari in South Africa. Makutsi lies between the Drakensberg Mountains and Kruger National Park and includes a range of excursions, including game drives on a private concession, a day trip to Blyde River Canyon and a safari in Kruger National Park.

Five fascinating South African facts

  • The South African coastline is the final resting place of countless shipwrecks, some dating back centuries. Many of them can be explored on a dive, and if you’re really brave, some of the best shark-diving opportunities in the world await at Dyer Island.
  • One of the world’s highest bridge bungee jumps is found in South Africa. At a vertigo-inducing 216 metres, the Bloukrans River Bridge jump is not for the faint of heart!
  • Amazingly, South Africa has 11 official languages - it isn't called the Rainbow Nation for nothing! However, English is spoken throughout, so there will be few language barriers on your South African adventure.
  • The Cape Floral Kingdom – part of Table Mountain National Park – is one of just six floral kingdoms on Earth. It boasts an incredible 8,200 species of plants - that’s more than entirety of the whole United Kingdom!
  • 41 of South Africa’s beaches have been awarded the “Blue Flag” status, which means they adhere to strict environmental and safety standards.

Why should I choose Bench Africa to help organise my South African safari?

Safari South Africa with Bench because our Africa experts have amassed a wealth of experience and know-how in organising South Africa holidays from Australia. With a population of just 25 million and a formed history dating back just 120-years, it's easy to be surprised by the depth of culture found in Australia. With Trafalgar, you'll peel back the layers of this country by visiting these museums and many more.

A yeast-based spread that makes many travelers squirm, trying Vegemite is a must when you visit Australia. Though locals like to experiment with the ways they use this vitamin-rich spread, consume it on a piece of toasted bread atop plenty of butter for the most typical Vegemite experience.

An irresistible chocolate biscuit that is part of Australia's cultural fabric; eat one Tim Tam and you are likely to finish the entire packet. Available at any convenience store or supermarket around the country, pick up many trays to take home and share with friends.

Australian sporting events are scarcely complete until you consume a meat pie. A baked pastry dish available in countless modern variations, the traditional meat pie is filled with minced gravy and slathered in tomato sauce.

What to pack for Australia

People packing for a tour

An empty suitcase

Tim Tams aren't easy to locate beyond the skirts of Australia. Pack an empty suitcase so you can return home with supplies and sweet souvenirs for family and friends.

Australian currency

There's no leniency in Australia when it comes to paying in foreign currencies. Pack Australian dollars in cash to avoid the fees of teller machines and currency convertors.

Australia is known for giant spiders and snapping crocodiles. But it's more likely to be tiny flying insects that get in your way. Pack bug spray to keep mosquitos at arm's length.

Goggles and a snorkel

Home to the world's most highly regarded reef, packing goggles and a snorkel will mean you can explore Australia's underwater world until your heart is content.

Sun protection

Trips to Australia typically involve a lot of time in the sunshine. Pack a wide brim hat and sunscreen to stay protected from the country's notoriously harsh rays.

Pack for sustainable travel

Consider your environmental impact when you next take a trip and go single-use-plastic-free by packing a reusable water bottle, a steel straw, your own shopping bags and refillable toiletry bottles.

Should I Visit Africa or Australia?

Black and white illustration of Ellie Khoury's headshot

Published on: February 12th, 2020

Last updated: April 19th, 2024

Although they’re on opposite sides of the globe, Africa and Australia have a surprising number of things in common. A trip to either one promises stunning landscapes, unique wildlife, fascinating cities and fantastic food – so which should you visit?

We’ve compiled all the information you need in order to choose. There are countless reasons to visit Australia and Africa alike; from the wide-open Outback and African plains to some of the world’s best winemaking regions, each of these destinations offers something for everyone.

Astonishing Environments

Africa is home to pretty much every kind of landscape imaginable. Here you can explore the  sweeping savannahs of the African Bush and visit various private game reserves and conservancies . Botswana’s Okavango Delt a and the rainforests of Rwanda provide some of the most iconic settings for Africa vacations, while the sandy shores of South Africa and Namibia’s Skeleton Coast offer unique seaside escapes.

The land down under is also legendary for its vast and untouched wilderness. While most of its cities line the coasts, the interior region features the majestic Australian Outback . This is where you’ll find the towering red rock of Uluru, a sacred spot imbued with spiritual significance. The Daintree Rainforest and Kakadu National Park are also bursting with natural splendours – and don’t forget the idyllic beaches of the Gold Coast and Lizard Island.

Exceptional Wildlife

If you want to see some of the world’s most incredible animals, an African safari should be at the top of your list. This is your best chance to see the Big Five – lions, leopard, elephants, rhinos and buffalo – in the wild. You can also experience the Great Migration up close, come face to face with mountain gorillas in Rwanda or meet penguins at Boulders Beach. Stay at one of our favourite lodges in Africa for a fully immersive experience.

On the other hand, an Australian safari offers an entirely different set of unforgettable wildlife. Here you’ll find kangaroos, koalas, dingoes, wallabies and even the famed Tasmanian devil. Explore the protected habitats of Kangaroo Island , snorkel through the Great Barrier Reef and see saltwater crocodiles in the Whitsundays . When it comes to Australian wildlife , the options are infinite.

Lively Cities

Considering all the endless reasons to visit Africa, an urban adventure might not be the first thing you think of. But this continent’s vibrant cities shouldn’t be overlooked. Cape Town is the oldest city in South Africa, surrounded by beautiful beaches and the magnificent Table Mountain. Namibia’s capital of Windhoek offers German architecture and gorgeous botanical gardens, while Kigali is an up-and-coming destination in the heart of Rwanda.

It’s hard to plan an Australian vacation without at least considering a trip to Sydney . This harbour city is an eclectic mix of modern culture, aboriginal history, Victorian architecture and idyllic beaches. But Melbourne is an equally tempting option – especially if you’re into art, coffee and cuisine. It’s brimming with museums and galleries, as well as fantastic cafes and restaurants.

World-Class Food and Wine

Speaking of restaurants, Africa also delivers when it comes to cuisine. The continent has an overwhelmingly diverse array of culinary traditions, featuring everything from unique local crops and game meats to more familiar delicacies. Wine lovers can’t miss South Africa’s Winelands , a region renowned for its rolling hills, excellent wineries and outstanding eateries.

australia tour africa

In addition to Melbourne’s buzzing cafe culture, other parts of Australia have their own culinary claims to fame. In South Australia , the verdant Barossa Valley provides ideal conditions for making wine – which pairs perfectly with local produce and artisanal cheeses. Of course, you’ll also find an abundance of fresh seafood all along the country’s coastline.

Wonderful Weather

As mundane as it may sound, the weather is an incredibly important aspect of any trip. This is especially true in Africa, where your experience can change completely depending on the season and weather conditions. For example, we suggest visiting southern Africa during the green season from November to April, when smaller crowds create ideal safari conditions.

lion-tswalu-reserve-kalahari-south-africa

Similarly, Australia’s sheer size means that weather conditions vary greatly from region to region. The best time to visit Australia depends on your destination; Sydney is a sure bet for warm temperatures year-round, but areas like the Outback require a bit more planning. If you can’t decide where to go, check out our list of the dreamiest lodges in Australia for inspiration.

South Africa Tours & Holidays

Group walking with wardens in Kruger national park, South Africa

The whole ‘country of contrasts’ thing has become a bit of a cliché

But what else do you call a place where (in a three-week period) you could happily slalom between penguins waddling on the Cape and lions stalking the bushveld, cinematic coastal switchbacks and burnt Kalahari sand, the oldest wine industry outside   Europe   and cutting-edge fusion cuisine? ‘Contrast’, doesn’t really do South Africa justice. The beauty of a South Africa tour (besides the peace of mind that comes with an expert local guide) is being able to fit so much   Africa   into so little time. From the Stellenbosch winelands to Kruger , Blyde River and beyond, this is a place where you can take your   safari   with a side of espresso.

Best time to visit south africa.

South Africa is an excellent year-round destination. Winters are mild, dry and good for wildlife viewing. Summers can get very hot and humid, but are a great time for visiting beaches and festivals. Spring is a great time for viewing wildflowers in the Northern and Western Cape provinces, and very little rain falls anywhere in autumn but the days are warm and the nights cool. Overall, there’s always a good time to head to South Africa.

Culture and customs

South Africa’s culture is one of the most diverse in the world. From indigenous tribes like the Zulu, San Bushmen and Xhosa to the Afrikaners of Dutch heritage, and immigrants of British descent, visitors will be able to experience a magnificent melting pot of customs and traditions. The significant Indian and Jewish populations also add to the ethnic mix. From the proud, beaded Zulu warriors that have inhabited the land for centuries to newly arrived immigrants from   Europe   and   Asia , South Africa’s culture has been shaped by millions of people.

The cuisine is generally a combination of Indian, Dutch, English and tribal flavours and techniques, while dress can range from modern fashion in the big cities to simple traditional, tribal dress in the bush. Although South Africa has made significant inroads towards peace and reconciliation since the end of apartheid, racial tensions are sometimes evident and it is generally best not to contribute to this in any way. Overall, most travellers will find South Africans to be welcoming, appreciative of your visit and ready to share their homeland and stories.

Eating and drinking

Intrepid believes that one of the best ways to experience a country is by eating! Whether you're sampling street food, savouring a cheap eat or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world.

Foods to try in South Africa

South Africa is fast becoming one of the most interesting wine producing regions in the world. Quality has risen steeply in the past decade so if you’re visiting the Stellenbosch Wine Region, be sure to sample some fine reds, which are world-class.

With such easy access to the Indian Ocean and Southern Atlantic, South Africa boasts some of the best seafood dining experiences you’ll ever have. From an indulgent oyster platter at a Cape Town restaurant to a spicy seafood curry in Durban, the seafood here is fresh, cheap and flavoursome.

Biltong tends to divide people. Some find this preserved, spiced meat snack impossible to refuse and others simply can’t stomach it. Either way, it’s extremely popular and readily available in markets, supermarkets and shops throughout South Africa.

4. Boerewors

Another one for the meat-lovers, this coiled, spicy sausage is a South African delicacy best done on the barbecue. Flavoured with coriander, cloves and nutmeg, this is a meat born from South African and Dutch traditions.

Geography and environment

South Africa showcases one of the most diverse and stunning natural environments in the world. Visitors are able to soak up golden rays on sun-drenched beaches, journey through acre upon acre of dry savannah, admire lush, green meadows, walk through tropical forest and stop to take in views of wide, ancient canyons. It’s also possible to stroll the streets of an urban city one day and meander along a dirt track passing small farms and villages the next. South Africa truly is a land of contrasts and this begins with the landscapes and environment.

Located on the tip of Southern Africa, South Africa shares land borders with Botswana, Mozambique, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Lesotho and Swaziland. It also shares a long stretch of coastline with the Indian and South Atlantic Oceans. The topography of the land changes remarkably around the country, from the lofty plateaux of the inland region to the low-lying coast and mountainous ranges of the Cape. This variance in topography makes South Africa rich in many species of flora and fauna, something that attracts many tourists and travellers from all over the world.

History and government

Early history.

The land of South Africa has been inhabited for centuries by tribes hailing from different areas of the African continent, including the San and Bantu people. Most tribes relied on hunting and gathering, but gradually were introduced to agriculture and animal husbandry over the years. From around 1200 AD, the tribal people of South Africa started to become influenced by outsiders, including Muslim traders, the Portuguese and the Dutch, who established a settlement in the mid 1600s.

The Dutch continued to dominate the country until the 1800s, when the British became interested in the Cape Colony. During this time, the native population had become increasingly dissatisfied with being marginalised and treated poorly by their European colonisers. Many native people were used as slaves on plantations and were treated brutally by their ‘employers’ and many resented losing their land, culture and traditional way of life. Further to this, the Dutch descendants (known as Boers) didn’t appreciate the arrival of the British in a territory they had inhabited for years before their arrival. This frustration and anger regularly resulted in confrontation and armed conflict between the British, Boers and Zulus, culminating in a series of wars – most notably the Boer Wars.

Recent history

More recently, South Africa has managed to overcome the Apartheid era, a time where discrimination of black people was legalised. Until 1994, black people were unable to legally own land or vote in elections. Further to this, education, healthcare, beaches and public places like cinemas were segregated. During this time, South Africa was ruled and controlled by the white minority, much to the dissatisfaction of the black population and ultimately, the world. After much international pressure and many attempts at reform, the Apartheid era was finally ended in 1994, with Nelson Mandela stepping up to lead the nation as President. Due to this challenging history, modern day South Africa has many social issues to work on and resolve, but many of its people are filled with hope and optimism. In 2010, South Africa successfully hosted the FIFA World Cup, much to the delight of its citizens and the world.

Top 10 places of South Africa

Use your wide-angle lens to capture the majestic Drakensberg Mountain Range in all its panoramic glory. This impressive mountain range is the highest in Southern Africa and provides a wide and wonderful scope for impressive postcard-worthy shots.

2. Stellenbosch

Rolling green pastures, vineyards and orchards combine to create classic photo moments straight out of a guidebook. This cultured and charming area showcases a different side to South Africa, and will no doubt have people guessing where your photo was taken.

This quaint seaside town located on South Africa’s Garden Route is one of the most photogenic in Africa. Whether you’re snapping the boats in the harbour, the dolphins frolicking in the waves or the wild and rocky coast, it’s hard not to snap Knysna in a good light.

Fans of street art will love capturing the murals and memorials of spirited Soweto. The gritty urban landscapes and candid faces make it simple to capture the soul of this endearing, inspiring community.

This gem of the South African Coast has retained a village atmosphere despite its growing popularity with tourists. The beaches, bays and rock pools provide sensational photography moments, especially at dawn and dusk when the sun gives off incredible, moody light.

6. Cape Town

Easily one of the most picturesque cities in the world, Cape Town has some of the most photo-worthy landscapes in the world. From breathtaking Table Mountain to the stunning coast and beautiful beaches, Cape Town has profound natural beauty coming at you from every angle.

Sure, Durban’s beaches are special but the interesting mix of Indian, Muslim, African and European influences makes for great photography. Durban’s cultural cornucopia of markets, mosques and galleries offers rich fodder for snap-happy travellers looking to capture a different side of Africa.

8. Lamberts Bay

The tremendously large colony of Cape Gannet birds who live off Lamberts Bay is often photographed - and with good reason. The sight of hundreds of birds tightly packed into a small space against a backdrop of azure ocean provides a unique, snap-worthy photo subject.

9. Blyde River Canyon

This canyon is every bit as stunning as America’s Grand Canyon, yet in a different way. Lush greenery grows over most of the area and a diverse range of animal and plant life is supported within its deep cliffs and valleys. It’s difficult to take a bad photo here, as Mother Nature has kindly provided a near perfect canvas.

10. Kruger National Park

This iconic national park has some of the ‘most-photographed’ animals in the world. Visitors love capturing shots of lions hunting prey, elephants drinking at waterholes and cheetahs sleeping under trees. Mesmerising amber sunsets and rolling savanna only add to the atmospheric magic of it all.

Highlights of South Africa

Brimming with golden beaches and glitzy nightlife, Durban is the perfect coastal city to catch some rays or sample South African cuisine in between your adventures. Try the city's famous bunny chow, take a scenic stroll along the Golden Mile promenade or learn about traditional African medicine at the Durban Muthi Market.

2. Johannesburg

Feel the buzz of urban Africa in Joburg, South Africa's largest city. Check out the cultural hotspots of Newtown, Braamfontein or Maboneng; learn about the country's sobering past at the Apartheid Museum, or venture outside the city to the Cradle of Humankind to see some of the oldest fossilised hominid remains on Earth.

3. Cape Town

Be captivated by the beautiful coast-meets-mountain landscapes of Cape Town. Hit up the city's famous Camps Bay to bask in the sun and swim in a natural rock swimming pool, hike to the top of Table Mountain for incredible views, admire the colourful buildings in Bo Kaap neighbourhood or watch life go by in one of the city's quirky cafes.

4. Stellenbosch

The Stellenbosch wine region is the place to be to sample the country's most delicious drops. Surrounded by lush orchards and rugged mountains, it's a beautiful place to soak up the scenery while enjoying a glass (or two) of the region’s world-class reds.

5. Kruger National Park

Welcome to one of the largest game reserves in Southern Africa. Home to over 500 bird species, 100 species of reptile and 150 mammal species (including the Big Five and the endangered African wild dog), you have a pretty good chance of spotting some of South Africa's resident wildlife while on safari here.

From the provincial markets of sleepy towns, through the malls of Johannesburg and to the galleries and cafes of Cape Town, there are many options for parting with money in South Africa. From budget market souvenirs to more indulgent bespoke buys, visitors will be pleased with the variety on offer here.

It's a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country. Australia and New Zealand generally have strict quarantine laws.

Things to buy in South Africa

1. Zulu Beads

Zulu beadwork acts as a form of communication for Zulu people but visitors are usually drawn to buy beads for their vibrancy and visual appeal. Necklaces, bracelets and head pieces are particularly popular.

2. Township Art

This urban art form involves recycling common landfill items like soft drink cans, telephone wire, paper and tyres, and turning them into jewellery, ornaments, key rings, bags and toys. Township art makes a unique souvenir or gift as it supports local artists and keeps excess waste out of landfill.

3. Gourmet Goodies

The Cape area has loads of amazing providores and food producers, so this is the best place to stock up on chutneys, jams and preserves made from local mango, fig, oranges and grapes.

4. Rooibos Products

Donations from our trips support their all-female ranger program – the Black Mambas – which focuses on anti-poaching activities such as destroying traps, conducting routine vehicle stop-and-searches, installing camera traps and early warning technology, and monitoring suspicious activity.

Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.

Or perhaps the sun-kissed Harbour City of Sydney, Melbourne’s art scene or Barossa Valley’s world-class wineries. Australia ms1

Ayers Rock (Uluru):

You will find this towering sandstone rock formation rising from the desert floor in the southern part of the Northern Territory of central Australia. It sits in a remote part of the Outback 208 miles southwest of the nearest large town, Alice Springs. The rock is one of Australia’s most recognizable natural landmarks and rises 1,142 feet… making it 2,381 feet above sea level.

Australia ms2

The most populous city in Australia is located on Australia’s east coast. This lively metropolis is surrounded by one of the world’s largest natural harbors. The first British settlers founded the city of Sydney in 1788, but it is said that the area had been inhabited for many years. Millions of tourists visit Sydney each year to see its natural features such as Sydney Harbour and Bondi Beach, as well as its man-made marvels like the Sydney Opera House and the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Australia ms3

The city was founded on August 30, 1835 and is located on a large natural bay – Port Phillip. Today it is often referred to as Australia’s cultural capital because of its renowned performing and visual arts scenes. Melbourne is known as the birthplace of Australian dance styles, the Australian film industry, Australian impressionist art and the Australian television industry.

Australia ms4

Kakadu National Park:

This protected area in the Northern Territory of Australia is about 100 miles east of Darwin. It is the largest national park in Australia covering 7,646 square miles, and measuring nearly 125 miles from north to south and 62 miles from east to west. The park is roughly half the size of Switzerland. Kakadu features many diverse landscapes perfect for outback adventure travel, nature activities and most of all, experiencing aboriginal culture.

Destination Must-Do's

Australia md1

Great Barrier Reef:

Experience one of the seven wonders of the natural world when you set off by boat for the Great Barrier Reef. As the world’s largest living organism, you’ll find over 2,800 individual coral reef systems which are home to amazingly diverse marine life. Their bright colors look remarkable against the turquoise waters. Jump in the water to snorkel and really experience the Reef in an immersive way! Stroll along the shore, relax on the beach, or just watch the fish and sea turtles swim past from the pier. It’s a truly good day at the Reef, mate.

Australia md2

Barossa Valley:

The valley located in South Australia is known as a major wine-producing region. In fact, it is renowned as one of the finest wine producing regions in the world. Located about 37 miles northeast of Adelaide, the valley is formed by the North Pala River, is home to more than 550 growers, and is famous for its Shiraz.

Australia md3

This island state that includes the island of Tasmania and the surrounding 334 islands is 150 miles south of the Australian mainland, separated by the Bass Strait. It may be famous for its Tasmanian Devil but it is also very eco-conscious with 45% of its land being reserves, national parks and World Heritage sites.

Australia md4

Phillip Island Penguin Parade

The little penguin is the smallest species of penguin. They are found on the coastlines of southern Australia and New Zealand. In Australia they are often called fairy penguins and in New Zealand they are known as little blue penguins or blue penguins. These penguins emerge from the shore at Phillip Island nearly every evening and make their way to their evening resting spots.

Australia needs to take Africa seriously – really, this time

Substantive engagement with the world’s next powerhouse region won’t carry big cost but will earn major returns.

The Obalende bus terminus in Lagos, Nigeria, 24 September 2024 (Olympia De Maismont/AFP via Getty Images)

In 2022, Assistant Foreign Minister Tim Watts declared that Australia wanted a new relationship – one of partnership – with Africa. Good call, but little action has followed so far.

Africa looms larger in the world and the wider Indo-Pacific region and is the frontier of Australia’s western security perimeter. Three key countries with long coastlines – Australia in the East, India in the North, and South Africa in the West – frame the Indian Ocean. Regional peace and security in the future will depend on how these countries work together and engage there with global players such as China, Russia, the United States, France and others.

It is time, and in Australia’s interests, for a long-term, multi-faceted engagement policy towards Africa, with initiatives to add substance to the rhetoric.

African-born voters already have real impact in some seats and a range of new diaspora organisations seek to speak for them.

Four Indian Ocean island states – Mauritius, Madagascar, Seychelles and Comoros – are African Union members. And Africa’s 54 nations already comprise more than a quarter of the UN’s membership. This matters if you need support to win a temporary seat on the UN Security Council election, as Australia does again in 2028 for 2029-30, or for positions on global issues such as climate change. The African states will also be crucial to the success of Foreign Minister Penny Wong’s worthy pursuit of a new humanitarian personnel protection initiative .

With the world’s highest population growth rate, Africa is set to have a projected population of 2.5 billion by 2050. The present estimated population on the continent of 1.5 billion is already ahead of India and China.

As population ages elsewhere, the world’s workers will increasingly come from Africa. With vast untapped resources and Asian growth slowing, so too will global growth. For this reason, the African Union was recently invited to join as a G20 member. And South Africa will host the G20 leaders' meeting next year – the first time it will be held on African soil.

At the same time, Africa is currently the world’s most underdeveloped and conflict-ridden continent. How its future is managed will matter more and more for the world.

Watts

Australia’s current interests in and engagement with Africa were underlined earlier this month by the Africa Week meetings in Perth (2-6 September). Central to this week were the successful 25 member Australia Africa Universities Network meeting – focusing on the energy transition and coordinated by Curtin University – and the Africa Down Under mining conference, where a prominent role was played by the Australia Africa Minerals and Energy Group . The ANU’s National Security College briefed others on the work of its new Africa Working Group.

Foreign Minister Penny Wong sent a supportive video message. Watts also gave a strong address and was active in meeting with African mining ministers and other delegates. Australia’s ambassadors on the continent and Africa’s ambassadors in Australia were thick on the ground. Attendance might have been greater of course if it hadn’t clashed with the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation in Beijing, presided over by President Xi Jinping himself.

According to a letter sent last month to the prime minister by the Australian Council for International Development on behalf of a range of groups interested in Africa, there are 165 ASX-listed companies (primarily mining) operating in 44 African countries. Australian investment in African mining – increasingly in critical and strategic minerals – is estimated at between A$40-60 billion. China is the main competitor.

Two-way trade is close to $10 billion, and $260 million a year is provided by the Australian public to development and humanitarian programs in Africa each year. The African-born diaspora in Australia is currently around 500,000 and growing. African-born voters already have real impact in some seats – including that of Watts in the western suburbs of Melbourne – and a range of new diaspora organisations seek to speak for them.

So, Africa matters to Australia. But despite its promising talk, there have been no new initiatives from this government on Africa. That needs to change. The various bodies mentioned above are coordinating pressure for that outcome. Among their recommendations are:

  • an Australia Africa Council, first pushed by a parliamentary inquiry in 2011 , to coordinate expert advice and suggest policy positions
  • increasing the Australia Awards scholarships to help develop Africa’s skills base with Australian tertiary know how. These have dropped back to 40-50 per annum from a high point of more than 500 during the Rudd/Gillard government
  • extending the New Colombo Plan to Africa to build African knowledge and connections for young emerging leaders
  • security cooperation in a range of targeted areas, including counter-terrorism, maritime security, crime and intelligence sharing
  • more two-way visits by ministers, parliamentarians and other senior players
  • an Australia Africa Leadership Dialogue to engage the leaders of the continent and balance the influence of China and others
  • strengthening and resourcing Australia’s diplomatic footprint to support better miners and other Australians in Africa, expanding the existing nine posts that cover 54 countries (with a wider, cost-effective honorary consul network able to help).

These and other recommendations, with little cost and a lot of commitment, could ensure Australia plays an informed and positive role in Africa’s future, as well as support and grow Australia’s interests there. It’s time for action to follow the rhetoric on Australia’s new relationship with Africa.

Sigur Rós Australian Orchestral Tour in 2025

The pride of Iceland, post-rock band Sigur Rós, are returning to Australia for orchestral performances in Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. (Details for Sydney shows are expected to be confirmed soon.)

Known for blending ambient electronics with orchestral strains, and the shiver-inducing falsetto of frontman Jónsi, the band first exploded in the late ’90s when its 1999 album was named Iceland’s best of the century. The group’s 2012 album, Valtari, reached number seven on the US charts and several others have gone platinum.

They’ve played at Coachella, Glastonbury and Lollapalooza, and have sold out tours globally while also appearing on screen in Game of Thrones making mystical music.

Their new tour features lush orchestral arrangements. For their Australian tour, they will be joined by the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and the Brisbane Philharmonic Orchestra. (Sydney musicians to be announced.)

With KL Rahul at No. 6, India looking at bigger picture in Tests: Hanuma Vihari

Hanuma vihari believes kl rahul's spot at no. 6 is part of a larger strategy for india's tour of australia, citing rahul's strong performances in sena countries (south africa, england, new zealand, and australia). despite an underwhelming return to test cricket after seven months, the team management values his experience in challenging conditions..

Listen to Story

KL Rahul and Gauttam Gambhir

  • Hanuma Vihari explains how KL Rahul at No.6 may prove fruitful in Australia tour
  • KL Rahul fails to impress on his Test comeback in the series-opener vs Bangladesh
  • Vihari pointed out that Rahul has performed well in SENA countries as a batter

Veteran India batter Hanuma Vihari believes KL Rahul’s position at No. 6 in the batting order is part of a bigger strategy for India’s upcoming tour to Australia. After nearly seven months away from the Test arena, Rahul’s much-anticipated return to red-ball cricket didn’t quite set the stage on fire. Rahul failed to impress with the bat, managing scores of 16 and an unbeaten 22 in Chennai against Bangladesh.

Vihar explained that Rahul’s experience is key, especially in handling challenging situations like facing the second new ball or stabilizing the team during a collapse. Vihari pointed out that Rahul has performed well in SENA countries (South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia), which is why the team management values his experience for this crucial middle-order role, even though his record in India may be less impressive.

India vs Bangladesh, 2nd Test: All you need to know

"I wouldn't say it would be his last Test match because they're looking at a bigger picture is what I feel playing KL Rahul at No.6. They have a plan in mind. They want experience at number six when we tour Australia, because in Australia, playing at six, you need to have good whether it's facing a second new ball or a collapse early. You need someone with experience to go out there and counter it and KL Rahul has done it in the past in SENA countries, especially, I know his numbers in SENA countries are really good compared to Indian conditions, which is surprising with the quality KL Rahul possess. But that is what they are looking at," Hanuma Vihari, Expert, JioCinema & Sports18, told Indiatoday.in in an interaction.

Vihari noted how Rahul may not always be the flashy, aggressive batter, but when he settles into his groove, he becomes the player who can anchor an innings, especially under pressure. That’s the version of Rahul that India hopes will emerge when they face sterner tests, particularly on their tour to Australia.

Since his Test debut in 2014, Rahul’s career has been a story of flashes of brilliance tempered by long periods of inconsistency. In 51 Tests, he has scored 2,901 runs at an average of 34.12. Those are solid numbers, but for a player of Rahul's calibre and reputation, there is a sense that his career statistics do not reflect his true potential.

'RAHUL WILL CEMENT HIS PLACE'

"I feel as a team management and selectors, someone at number six to guide the team if they're in trouble, or play the second new ball and take it forward from there. Obviously, he needs to score runs to back the team's decision as well. He started well, in the second in the last game. Unfortunately, he didn't have enough time to make it a big score or substantial score, but I'm sure in Kanpur, where the wicket is nice when the opportunity comes, he'll make it big and cement his place at number six, which is important for Team India when they tour Down Under," Vihari added.

Rahul’s return wasn’t just marked by his performance in Chennai; there were prior signs of rust and recovery in his Duleep Trophy appearance for India A. In his first outing, his 111-ball-37 was criticized for its conservative approach. In a world where aggressive batsmanship is prized, Rahul’s hesitation to take the initiative in key moments drew flak. However, in the second innings of the same match, he found some redemption, crafting a gritty 57 off 121 balls as his side crumbled around him. Though India A ultimately lost to India B, Rahul's ability to hold his ground in difficult situations hinted at his resilience.
