Hi friends, City Editor Cat here . I suffer from anxiety and lingering back + joint pain from my time as a collegiate athlete. As I’ve gotten older, I now lean on CBD and legal THC products to help alleviate my discomfort.

Enter: Trek CBD — A local, family-owned natural wellness store that boasts well-trained, knowledgeable staff and high-quality products that have been through third party lab testing. To be blunt , my experience shopping at Trek CBD opened my eyes to just how many multi-beneficial CBD products there are to try.

Different products displayed.

From gummies and chocolates to topicals, Trek has a wide variety of options to choose from.

What we tried:

I left the shop with a slew of recommended goodies to try. Some of my favorites? The Rebel Rabbit Wild Hare High Seltzer was super refreshing and left me feeling relaxed after a long day at work. I’ll also be back for their shop-brand Serene 9 Delta 9 Gummies which are meant to relax, unwind, and reset. And they certainly do just that . If smoking is more your speed, I recommend their Delta 8 Flower .

Bonus: If you’re still unsure about what CBD is, ask a staff member or visit their FAQ page to learn from the experts.

Trek offers everything from hemp-infused coffee to CBD bath bombs.

What not to miss:

  • Online shopping: This family-owned wellness shop carefully packs each parcel from their online shop with a handwritten note + a surprise goodie.
  • Cash back: Be sure to ask about the store’s 10% cash back program.
  • Pet care: My dog, Tucker, even joined in on the shopping experience and came home with Honest Paws Roasted Peanut Butter Calming Bites . Honest Paws has a host of pet products that the store has stocked since the beginning.

The stores offers a dedicated pet care section.

What we’re still talking about:

CEO Nick Pione left the pharmaceutical industry to pursue a career in educating folks on the physical and emotional benefits of CBD and non-psychoactive hemp products. His expertise certainly shines through in his inviting shop atmosphere and the products he has carefully selected for the shelves.

While I was browsing, another customer walked in and made it clear that he had no real intentions of making a purchase (he was just taking a look around while his friend was in an appointment). He told the staff that “he was unfamiliar with CBD products,” but within five minutes of the Trek staff educating him and smelling a few products, he was sold and purchased the-A, Treks’ line of CBD Hemp Flower sold in-stores.

Using CBD for chronic pain doesn't actually work, study says

"there is no good reason for thinking that cbd relieves pain," the authors bluntly wrote.

CBD oil derived from hemp.

CBD for your chronic pain may turn out to be a dangerous dud, the authors of a large review say. They found little evidence from clinical trials that CBD can be an effective pain reliever. These products also tend to have inaccurate labeling information about the amount of CBD they contain or even other undisclosed ingredients that could be hazardous to users, they add.

CBD is short for cannabidiol, one of the two primary ingredients in cannabis (the other being delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, which is responsible for the drug’s characteristic high). CBD and other cannabinoids do have legitimate medical uses. In 2018, for instance, the CBD-based drug Epidiolex was approved by the Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of certain types of seizure. And there have been numerous studies suggesting CBD could be used to treat a variety of health conditions, including anxiety , schizophrenia , opioid use disorder , and chronic pain. But not all the studies on CBD have been positive, and there are many claims made about its potential benefits that have weak scientific backing.

This new study, led by researchers at the University of Bath in the UK, reviewed data from randomized and controlled trials — often considered the gold standard of clinical evidence — testing CBD in a variety of forms (topical, oral, under the tongue) for chronic pain. All but one of the studies found that CBD wasn’t any better at pain relief than placebo.

The authors also found evidence from other studies and reviews that CBD products are frequently mislabeled, containing less or much more CBD than advertised or sometimes having other ingredients that could be harmful or illegal for users to possess, such as THC. And while these impurities are less likely to show up in products explicitly designated for medical use, consumers nowadays are more often getting CBD products from retail or online stores. Some research has also suggested that heavy or long-term use of CBD isn’t necessarily harmless either, possibly raising the risk of liver damage.

“There is no good reason for thinking that CBD relieves pain, but there are good reasons for doubting the contents of CBD products in terms of CBD content and purity,” the authors bluntly state in their paper, published in the April issue of The Journal of Pain .

CBD has become a booming industry over the years, one filled with iffy-sounding fad products . And though there’s still the chance CBD can have a place in our medicine cabinets, the authors say that health regulators need to do more to rein in the scammers selling it as a cure-all for everything under the Sun. They note that people taking CBD for their pain are often desperate for any potential help, making them easier targets for snake oil salesmen.

“For too many people with chronic pain, there’s no medicine that manages their pain. Chronic pain can be awful, so people are very motivated to find pain relief by any means. This makes them vulnerable to the wild promises made about CBD,” said study author and pain researcher Andrew Moore, in a statement from the University of Bath.

In the U.S., the FDA has previously gone after some distributors and sellers of CBD products for making egregiously unsupported marketing claims . And last year, the agency stated that a “new regulatory pathway for CBD” is needed to manage how these products should be made available to consumers — one that it intends to develop with the help of Congress.

‘Star Trek: Discovery’ S5 Review: Final Season Is Its Best

This season has a brisk pace and the sense of fun that in the past has been crushed under the weight of grave galactic stakes..

trek cbd reviews

Star Trek: Discovery occupies an interesting place in the celebrated franchise. It was the first Trek series of the streaming era, the first to debut behind a paywall, the first produced after J.J. Abrams’ big screen reboot, and the first to put a woman of color in the captain’s chair. Discovery redefined the look and feel of the franchise on television, bringing Trek into the modern world of feature-level photography, effects, and pace of story. It blazed a trail for a new generation of Trek media, like direct spin-off Strange New Worlds and the upcoming Section 31 TV movie. It is also not terribly popular amidst the old guard of Trekkies, nor is it a mainstream hit or a critical darling. Discovery has struggled to find its footing from the very beginning and is still uneven after years of retooling. I do not consider its cancellation after five seasons to be a tragic loss for television. However, Discovery may still have one “first” left to achieve: It may be the first Star Trek series whose final season is its best.

(A quick personal note to the handful of Trekkies who just clutched their pearls: Season 4 of Enterprise is not better than Season 3, it merely has more familiar stuff for fans to point at with childlike glee. And you’ve likely already read my thoughts on Picard ’s final season .)

Even as a critic of the show, I have to acknowledge that every season of Discovery has started with a bang. It’s the nature of a serialized, season-long story arc to kick off with something resembling the first act of a feature film, and Season 5 is no different. The opening chapter, “Red Directive,” is a fast-paced space adventure packed with flashy action set pieces. The illustrious Captain Michael Burnham ( Sonequa Martin-Green ) and her crew are on the trail of Moll (Eve Harlow) and L’ak (Elias Toufexis), a spacefaring Bonnie and Clyde who have stumbled across a secret with enormous implications for the future of the galaxy. Just like the previous three seasons, this sets Team Disco off on another cosmic scavenger hunt, jumping to a new world each week to find the next clue to the season’s grander mystery.

trek cbd reviews

Historically, this is where Discovery has run into trouble. While each chapter tends to have its own contained adventure plot or even a classic Trek “message of the week,” they’re rarely that memorable and they advance the season’s overarching storyline without adding much depth. This season, though, has a brisk pace and a sense of fun that, previously, has been crushed under the weight of grave galactic stakes. Paramount has promoted this season as having an Indiana Jones energy to it , and that’s a fair comparison. The characters are enjoying themselves more, and for the first time since Season 2, the story isn’t built around some unfathomable tragedy. T o my best recollection, none of the episodes provided in advance to critics feature any crying. That’s four consecutive episodes, possibly a new track record.

This is not the only way in which Discovery ’s new season throttles back on the show’s occasionally cloying sentimentality. The season premiere introduces a new character, Captain Rayner ( Callum Keith Rennie ), a gruff pragmatist who serves as a contrast to Burnham’s soft-spoken, personable, firmly feminine command style. At first, Rayner appears to be a straw man representing aggro, entitled white male authority, a trope Discovery goes to often. As the season progresses, Rayner acquires some depth and even some likability. It’s fun to watch this grumpy old guy interact with a cast full of characters who are totally in touch with their feelings. Most importantly, Rayner provides something that the series has needed ever since Burnham took command of Discovery: a professional peer with whom to disagree and occasionally compromise. It’s an essential role that her first officer, Saru ( Doug Jones ), has become too adoring and loyal to play. Burnham has earned the devotion of her crew, but watching her gracefully manage dissent only enhances her aura of strength and leadership.

trek cbd reviews

Even though production was wrapped before Discovery was canceled (with additional shooting after that announcement to tie up loose ends), Season Five feels like a finale from the very beginning. A few characters are moving on with their lives, pursuing new interests and relationships. There are more fun, non-intrusive callbacks to Treks past than in the last two seasons, which makes it feel a bit like a victory lap for the streaming era’s flagship show. Above all, there is a sense of ease, as if the cast and crew have finally got their engine running smoothly and can cruise to the finish line. It’s the energy a series possesses at its peak, a point to which fans will often look back and say “They probably should have stopped there.” Barring a significant misstep in its final six episodes, Star Trek: Discovery will never be past its prime, and that’s a distinction its creators can wear with pride.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5 episodes 1 and 2 recap and review - let's fly

Happy Star Trek: Discovery Return Day for those who celebrate it!

Strap in and crank up the warp drive because Star Trek: Discovery has just launched into its fifth and final season, and let me tell you, it's setting phasers to "mind-blowing." This isn't just another voyage into the final frontier - it's the grand finale that promises to take us further than we've ever gone before. With Commander Michael Burnham at the helm, the USS Discovery is not just exploring strange new worlds; it's delving deep into the heart of what it means to be a part of this vast, cosmic tapestry.

According to everything I've heard from the excellent and talented starts Sonequa Martin-Green , Mary Wiseman, Doug Jones, David Ajala , and co-showrunners Michelle Paradise and Alex Kurtzman , this final season is about to take "boldly going" to a whole new level.

As the curtain rises on this epic conclusion, the stakes are higher, the aliens are weirder, and the plot twists? Let's just say they're twistier than a double helix nebula. Whether you've been on board since the maiden voyage or you're just beaming in, this final season of Star Trek: Discovery is crafting a legacy that will resonate across the galaxy. It's not just a mission; it's a journey - a journey that challenges the crew, the Federation, and fans alike to discover what lies beyond the stars and within themselves.

Let's talk about the two-episode season premiere, shall we?

SPOILER WARNING FOR THOSE WHO HAVEN'T WATCHED "RED DIRECTIVE" AND "UNDER THE TWIN MOONS"

Episode 1 review - "Red Directive"

The episode kicks off with Captain Michael Burnham quite literally riding the waves of warp on the hull of a starship. As she communicates with Saru, we learn she's on a mission to recover something of vital importance stolen from a vault, only for things to take a nosedive into "imminent warp failure" territory. Flashback to four hours earlier, and we're mingling at a Federation Headquarters soiree, with Burnham rubbing elbows with Discovery's finest, including Paul Stamets and Hugh Culber, and catching up with the now Starfleet Academy professor Sylvia Tilly. Amid "Tonic 2161" cocktails and bittersweet farewells to the Spore Drive program, President Rillak and ever-so-handsome Admiral Vance drop a bombshell on Burnham: a mission classified under "Red Directive," involving an 800-year-old science vessel and a vital security threat to the Federation.

The Discovery crew, now briefed and beaming with determination, sets course for an uninhabited planet to investigate an abandoned Romulan vessel - a mission that quickly turns south as they encounter identity-concealing thieves, Moll and L’ak, and a near-mummified Romulan corpse. The stakes skyrocket when the thieves make a dramatic escape, leaving Burnham stranded on their decloaking ship as it jumps to warp. The episode shifts gears with a high-stakes chase, clever misdirections, and a tractor-beam tug-of-war that would make even Captain Kirk sweat. Enter handsome devil Cleveland "Book" Booker, brought in for his unique insights as Burnham and crew pursue the thieves across the desert planet Q’Mau, leading to a marketplace showdown, a high-octane sand runner chase, and an avalanche-induced crisis that puts the entire city at risk. As Discovery and the USS Antares heroically shield the settlement, Burnham and her team are left pondering the implications of the thieves’ mysterious Romulan puzzle box and the ancient, powerful technology it hints at - technology connected to the Progenitors and the very origin of life in the galaxy. This is a nice little nod to Star Trek: The Next Generation 's episode "The Chase". Five-year-old me squealed at the connection.

With Saru contemplating a future as a Federation ambassador (and a marriage proposal from T’Rina), and Stamets reflecting on his legacy, "Red Directive" is not just a thrilling start to Discovery's final season; it's a love letter to the enduring themes of Star Trek. The chase for the Progenitors' technology, wrapped in the legacy of Jean-Luc Picard's adventures, sets the stage for a season that promises to explore the depths of space, the bonds of family, and the pursuit of knowledge that has always been at the heart of Star Trek.

Episode 2 review - "Under the Twin Moons"

This episode takes us on a ride through the stars that’s more twisty than a barrel of Tribbles.

Captain Michael Burnham kicks things off with a deep space musing about life, the universe, and everything Progenitors. Cut to a scene where Burnham and the gang find themselves in the principal's office, aka a hearing with President Rillak, where they're chewing over Captain Rayner's wild west approach to space diplomacy. Spoiler alert: not everyone's a fan. Meanwhile, Booki s having a heart-to-heart with his cat, Queen Grudge, proving once again that in space, even your pet has royal status.

Next up, we're off to Lyric, a planet with more history than a Vulcan's bookshelf and the potential resting place of some seriously old-school tech courtesy of the Progenitors. Think of it as the universe's most epic treasure hunt, with Burnham and her space posse decoding ancient riddles, dodging killer drones (because what's a treasure hunt without a little peril?), and racing against the clock to unearth secrets that could redefine life as we know it.

On this planet of puzzles and peril, Burnham and "Action" Saru (Doug Jones) – yeah, that's his nickname now, courtesy of Jet Reno, and it's sticking – are Indiana Jones-ing their way through ancient ruins and drone attacks. These aren't your garden-variety drones, either - they're the galaxy's most unwelcoming committee, armed to the teeth and ready to explode at the first sign of grave robbing. Back on the USS Discovery, the crew's putting their heads together to crack the code of the Romulan scientist's diary and figure out where the Progenitors’ tech is hiding. It’s like the Federation's version of a book club, but with more at stake than just snacks and gossip. Meanwhile, Book's playing interstellar detective, trying to suss out the whereabouts of our favorite space outlaws, Moll and L’ak, and their romantic Bonnie and Clyde routine.

As Burnham and Saru navigate the deadly dance of drone dodgeball on Lyric, they stumble upon a clue that's hotter than a phaser set to stun: a piece of a cosmic map hidden in plain sight, pointing the way to the next piece of the Progenitor puzzle. It's a race against time, with Moll and L’ak hot on the same trail, and only one team can come out on top. In a twist that ties the past to the present, Book uncovers a personal connection to Moll that's as surprising as finding a Betazoid at a Klingon opera. And just when you thought the drama couldn't get any thicker, Captain Burnham makes a play that could change the course of their mission and their lives, offering Rayner a shot at redemption and a chair as her right-hand man.

"Under the Twin Moons" isn't just a title; it's a metaphor for the dualities within us all - the scientific curiosity versus the preservation of sacred grounds, the thirst for adventure against the respect for those who came before, and the search for new horizons while holding onto the relationships that define us.

As the Discovery races against time, and Moll and L'ak, to uncover the next piece of the Progenitor puzzle, we're reminded that in the vast expanse of space, it's not just the stars that guide us, but the bonds we forge along the way.

Don't forget to tune in next Thursday, April 11th , for the 3rd episode in the epic 10-episode season and series finale.

Interview: Sonequa Martin-Green Talks Burnham’s Journey Into The Final Season Of ‘Star Trek: Discovery’

It was awesome! Love that this season is a kinda sequel to TNGs The Chase. So many great Easter eggs. Loved the Soong type android… and the Roman ship… and did anyone else notice the tribble in the hall of Disco? Such fun.

You’re spoiling a lot here. Please don’t be this specific.

The season preview shown at the end of the first episode had a quick shot of what looked like a constitution class starship. I’m actually excited to see how this season plays out.

Legacy ships.

Silly me for giving Discovery credit for being the only show not to rely on nostalgia-bait.

Any excuse to trot out the same tired complaint, huh?

When Trek stops troting out the same, tired nostalgia-bait, I’ll stop complaining. I wouldn’t get your hopes up.

For the love of God what exactly is wrong with building off previous canon from within a franchise? It’s not that they are playing off general interest nostalgia like pogo sticks and oldies music. And you know what? I love nostalga? Life is to short and painful at times. Let us be serviced

In 50 years people will look back at all of Star Trek as Nostalgic. So does it really matter in the long run?

You’re absolutely right.

PUSH THE FRANCHISE *FORWARD* AND BUILD NEW CANON AND LORE THAT PEOPLE IN 50 YEARS WILL BE NOSTALGIC ABOUT.

OMG did you see what register number that was??? #nospoilers

Calm down. It was in a preview for the season, and it was a blink and you’ll miss it shot.

I saw that too. And it reminds me that (I can talk about spoilers of this ep now right?)

The Progenitors or the idea of them did not originate on TNG’s the Chase. They were a theory of Spock as to why so many species across the galaxy are humanoid and that an ancient race must have populated several worlds across the Galaxy.

Why is the old guy in the ep keep referring to the Projenitors of a 1000’s of year old secret? The very notion that they are responsible for humanity makes them millions if not billions years old.

I took that as it’s the secret of their existence that a thousand years old- not the race themselves.

Ahhh gotcha.

Has anyone ever noticed that The female Progenitor not only looks like a changeling but is also played by Salome Jens? HMMMM…..

I’ve always noticed that… and always hoped that it was just a coincidence. “The Chase” was strong enough on its own without Changeling conspiracy theories throw in.

Plus, the Changelings only adopted their “solid faces” to mimic Odo’s poor shifting abilities and make him feel more comfortable with his own people.
