Inspiration for Your Travel Themed Wedding or Destination Wedding
Last updated: June 14, 2024 - Written by Jessica Norah 106 Comments
Planning a travel themed wedding? The goal of this article is to provide inspiration for couples planning a travel inspired wedding or destination wedding.
I guess you could say that Laurence and I had a travel-themed wedding although it was more of a destination wedding. We legally married at sea aboard the RMS Queen Mary 2 in the Atlantic Ocean. Then we had a small ceremony in Venice Italy for family and friends to celebrate our wedding in Venice .
Even though we did not have the most traditional wedding ceremony or reception, I spent quite a bit of time online researching awesome travel themed wedding items and ideas about ways a couple could incorporate their wanderlust and love of travel into their wedding ceremony and wedding reception.
We’ve put together a list of over 100 items that we think would be perfect for a travel-themed wedding. These include travel themed wedding invitations, wedding rings, wedding decorations, table place cards, cake toppers, DIY ideas, wedding favor gifts, and more!
Many of our recommendations are focused on handmade items and unique products that can be customized to fit the style of any wedding couple. We include items that should fit just about any type of wedding and suit any wedding budget.
We have physically reviewed many of these items and hope you enjoy this list of wonderful travel themed wedding items. We hope it inspires you and gives you plenty of ideas for your own travel themed wedding!
Table of Contents:
100+ Ideas for a Travel Themed Wedding
In 2015, one survey of American wedding couples found that approximately 21% have a destination wedding of some sort, whether domestically or internationally. The study found that there are more than 350,000 destination weddings each year, 77% of which take place in the continental US and 23% at international destinations with the Caribbean and Mexico being the two most popular destinations.
However, not all couples want or can have a destination wedding, but many still want to incorporate their love of travel into their wedding celebration. You don’t have to have a destination wedding to fill your marriage celebration with travel inspired touches.
So we are sharing over 100 products we found during our search that we thought would be perfect for a travel themed wedding or a destination wedding. These simple travel themed wedding decorations can help transport your guests to another land, and make them feel like they’re on holiday, even if they are still in their hometown.
I got truly interested in the topic of how to incorporate elements of travel into one’s wedding after we decided to get customized engagement/wedding rings with a strong travel element. Many of the items on this list we physically reviewed. Some were items we purchased or received as gifts, and others were given to us by artists for review. Other products are just ones I loved when researching travel themed weddings online.
The majority of the items included on our list are handmade or hand customized items, made by a single artist, family, or a small business. Many of these items are truly unique and the majority can be customized to include elements that are special to you.
Note that most wedding items are marketed towards heterosexual couples with bride/groom and his/her versions. However, given that most of our recommended items can be personalized, most artists are happy to adjust wording/colors/features to suit a gay wedding, civil union, nonbinary couple, etc. Just message them to ask!
We know that many people, like us, want to try to support local businesses when we can, and with Etsy it is easy to find products that are made in one’s own country. We share items that are made worldwide, with a large number of products produced in the USA, Canada, and the UK. But we also include items made by artists in Australia, the Ukraine, France, India, Brazil, Israel, etc.
When shopping, we recommend ordering items well before you need them for the wedding. Personalized and custom orders will take longer to make and international shipping times can be slow.
Although we chose these items specifically for a travel themed wedding, many of these items will also work for travel themed bridal showers, bon voyage parties, birthday parties, baby showers, engagement parties, wedding couple gifts, and just as general travel-related gifts.
There are so many possible ways to incorporate travel elements into your wedding, and we have tried to cover a variety of items from cake toppers to wedding invitations to wedding favors to wedding jewelry. We also tried to include items that fit a number of budgets and types of weddings.
We hope that this list helps inspire you to incorporate some element of your own wanderlust into your upcoming wedding or party!

Adding a travel themed bow tie or neck tie to your wedding wardrobe is an elegant but subtle way to incorporate your love of travel into your special day.

For weddings, especially if there are a lot of groomsmen wearing matching bow ties, it is often recommended by wedding photographers to wear pre-tied bow ties for the photo shoot so that all the ties are a uniform size and shape in the wedding photos. So, some grooms may want one of each.

Travel Themed Guestbooks & Guestbook Alternatives
A guestbook is often one of the most treasured wedding keepsakes for a wedding couple as it contains the personal well wishes from all the wedding guests. A guestbook is often one of the first things that wedding guests see at your wedding, so it can be a good way to introduce the travel theme of the wedding.
Often the wedding couple has a guest book available to sign for people entering or exiting the wedding ceremony and then move it later to the reception so anyone who didn’t get a chance to sign at the ceremony can do it then.
If your guestbook is a bit unique, you may want to make sure you nominate a friend or family member to be in charge of letting guests know about your guest book. They can also show them how to use it if it requires any explanation.
When choosing a guestbook option, don’t forget to consider how many people are on your wedding guest list, to ensure that all guests have enough space to sign it. Many of the options below have different sizes available, while others come with the option to add extra pages for larger wedding parties.
Also note that most of our recommended guest books can also be used as a photo album if you prefer to use it to display photos of you and your partner, or if you wish for guests to take photos at the reception with an instant camera and add them to the book. Just be sure to check with the seller before purchasing if it is not clear.

Travel Themed Wedding Candles
Wedding candles are a way of symbolizing the uniting of two families. Often the bride and groom will light separate candles with their families, and bring them together to light a new candle as they start their next big adventure together. They are also often used to light churches and reception halls and as table centerpieces and decorations.
It is easy to add a sense of wanderlust to your candle choices, whether it is through the way the candle looks, its holder, or its scent. For scented candles, you may want to choose a specific scent for candles on the tables that fits a specific destination for a themed wedding.
If planning to burn them, look for non-toxic natural wax (paraffin free) candles. Just note that not all guests love scented candles as some people are very sensitive or allergic to them. So if you have them at the guest tables, you may want to have someone ask guests at each table before lighting and have some LED backups.
Choose Your Own Wanderlust Scent
Why not choose a specific scent for your special day? Then all of your wedding memories will come flooding back to you every time you light the candle. These wanderlust inspired candles are made with U.S farm-grown soy, phthalate-free fragrance blend, and natural wood wicks.
There are 18 different complex scents to choose from including ones inspired by Havana Cuba, Waimea Falls, Brooklyn, San Gimignano, Japan, São Paulo, and the Rocky Mountains. The 4.5oz Woodwick Candles are hand-poured into recycled glass jars and burn for up to 40 hours.

My dream is to have a ceremony on the beach at sunset. Is this a good idea? It’s important to give myself a few days to relax prior to the wedding.
October 3, 2017 at 2:03 pm
Hi Stacey, I think that it is your dream, then you should do it as long as your spouse-to-be is also on board with the idea. It can be tricky to have an outdoor wedding but I would just have it somewhere where the weather is normally warm and predictable and have a plan if the weather is less than ideal (an alternative indoor venue). If you are working with a wedding planner, they should be able to help get everything worked out for you. Giving yourself a few days to relax in advance sounds like a great plan! Wishing you a wonderful beach wedding, Jessica

Hi Lissa, Yes, when we got married on the Queen Mary 2 ( https://independenttravelcats.com/2015/12/22/wedding-at-sea-married-cunard-queen-mary-2-wedding/ ), we did very little planning as your options are obviously more limited and you have a wedding coordinator who helps you out and does the work of setting things up. We just had to come up with readings and music and make some selections regarding vows, flowers, food, etc. Very easy which was perfect for us! ~ Jesica

Lots of nice products (and lots of research to put it all together!). I myself organized a travel themed barmitzva for my son a couple of years ago – lots of work went into travel video making (about all countries he visited) and decorations (every table was themed with a different country) but it was a lot of fun and quite unusual for a barmitsva! Needless to say- our wedding happened while travelling too (in Eastern Europe some 20+yrs ago).. while not too many people got to witness it, I would not do it any other way. It makes the day so special!
May 29, 2016 at 8:00 am
Hi Victoria, Haha, yes, it was a lot of research but so fun to find out about so many interesting products and such talented independent artists and small businesses! Sounds like a very special barmitzva for your son! My friend did something similar with her wedding although it was more wildlife themed (her and her husband worked at a nature preserve) and each table represented animals from different parts of the world. A fun way to decorate and make each table unique. Best, Jessica

This post is so full of inspiration for wanderlust-full celebrations. I love the passport and boarding pass save-the-dates and invitations.
May 22, 2016 at 10:57 am
Hi Erin, Yes, I think since most people now send Save the Dates as well as invites, it is nice to establish a theme if one is going to have one before the actual wedding day. But I think these invites are great even alone without having a travel themed wedding or destination wedding. The passports can provide a lot more information than a normal paper invite, including all the travel, pre-ceremony, venue, ceremony, and registry details as you can add as many pages as you need. ~ Jessica

This is a super timely article as I’m actually getting married next year! I love the map flowers bouquet idea because I’m not really fond of fresh cut flowers (found a bug in a bouquet once, ugh) and I think it’s a bit of a waste when they die so quickly after. Thanks for the inspiration!
May 21, 2016 at 5:19 am
Congrats on your upcoming wedding. Yes that map flowers bouquet is a great idea and I think paper flowers are becoming more popular for the reasons you are said, cleaner and can keep forever, but also because one can buy them ahead, travel with them, and store them just about anywhere. I also love the fact that you can customize these so much. Glad you found this post inspirational for your wedding! ~ Jessica

I got married almost 4o years ago, when there was no such thing as a ‘themed wedding.” In my country of origin people were married in a very traditional way, so this is how I got married to, but I would have loved to have a wedding like yours. Recently I attended a themed wedding for my niece though, in Florence. It was very beautiful, but nothing like yours. You’ve exceeded everything I’ve ever seen or heard so far. Wow!

Hi Anda, Yes, I think weddings, particularly for Americans, have become much more for the couple and what they would like to do and less about the family. I think it has to do partly with the fact that wedding couples are much more likely to pay for at least part, if not all, of their own wedding rather than the bride’s parents paying for most of it (many can’t afford to do this). Our wedding on the boat was private and fairly simple, and our wedding in Venice looks fabulous in photos, which it was of course, but it was also very small and informal. It was great for us as it was pretty stress-free! ~ Jessica

Jessica, we got our travel inspiration from our honeymoon, but if I could turn back time and have a travel inspired wedding I would chose some of these items. I love the bow tie, cufflinks, bouquet, cake topper and invitations, but adored your luggage. I first noticed your luggage in your wonderful Orient Express post. The rings are also a great idea for replacing expensive, sentimental rings when travelling which is something that is a need for many., but something I have never thought of doing. Finally I love that final photo of your dress and luggage on the bed in your beautiful Venetian hotel. Great post and thank you for linking up with #TheWeeklyPostcard

Hi Lyn, Yes, I know, these make me want to get married again and I just got married! You have a good eye, yes, this is the same luggage we took on both the Queen Mary 2 and Orient Express. After the wedding the cosmetic case (because our wedding party didn’t have room to take it back) ended up traveling with us through Italy, Morocco, and Egypt…probably not the best choice of luggage for desert travel but it survived. Laurence is thinking about wearing his map bow tie and cufflinks when he gives a speech at an upcoming travel conference which I think will be perfect:) We love our rings, and if you are looking for unique travel rings, I can highly recommend Bruce. We got fabulous service, communication, and products from him! He has some amazing ready-to-buy designs and I love you can also customize. ~ Jessica

So many great ideas here, Jessica! I am getting closer to this stage with my daughters (not quite yet!), but I know one of them has talked about a destination wedding. I actually bought the cuff links for my husband with our hometown on them, just for fun. The cake toppers are really cute – that would be so special. There are so many creative alternatives to the “standard issue” things I did back in the day. Helps you get excited for something very special:)

Frequently asked questions about Wedding favors
Still have questions about wedding party favors? We’ve tapped Principal and Event Specialist Alex Berry of Alexandra Berry Events to guide us through some wedding favor basics, from whether you actually need them to how much to spend.
What is a wedding favor?
What is a wedding favor? “A wedding favor is something you can gift to your guests as a keepsake or to say thank you for coming and celebrating!” says Berry. Wedding favors can be whatever you want them to be, but choosing a gift that’s sentimental, practical and even experiential is a win-win for your loved ones.
“We often recommend something experiential or meaningful, such as unique place cards with guests’ names calligraphed on a keepsake, or guest watercolor portraits painted at the wedding by an artist,” she suggests.
Do you need wedding favors?
Do you need wedding favors? Whether or not you need wedding favors is a decision that depends on your preferences and budget. “While you certainly do not need to have wedding favors, it can be a nice way to add in a touchpoint to enhance the wedding weekend experience and leave guests with something to remember the festivities by,” Berry adds.
For destination weddings, gift-filled welcome bags are a great alternative because they can highlight the region where the wedding is taking place. These bags can include “local beverages, treats from the bride and groom's hometowns, and/or something the guests may need, such as a custom water bottle or a welcome note from the couple, with a map of the area weekend details,” Berry adds.
Whether or not you need wedding favors is a decision that depends on your preferences and budget. Favors offer the opportunity to show appreciation to your guests and enhance their experience. They also serve as a thoughtful gesture and can add an extra touch of excitement to your special day.
How much should you spend on wedding favors?
Generally, most couples spend between $2 to $3 per wedding favor, but there’s no hard and fast rule as to how much you should spend. Berry says the cost comes down to “your guest count and what you are planning to do,” but couples can dish anywhere from $500 to $2,500 on wedding favors or welcome bags.
Ultimately, you should spend an amount that you’re comfortable with. Your guests will appreciate the thought behind any wedding favor idea that you choose, so select something that you really love in a price range that’s within your budget.

Change it up with gin, tequila, bourbon, or whatever spirit moves you…a copper mug can deliver a mule to suit everyone. ( Check out our recipes! )
A Gift That Will Last
We know that favors for weddings should be as individual as the brides and grooms who are celebrating. And if there’s one thing we’ve all learned, it’s that the favors guests like best are the ones they will actually use. Especially these days with our concerns about waste, no one wants another plastic trinket to stuff in a drawer.

So, what favor is worthy of your wedding.
Some brides and grooms go in the food + drink direction with edible favors like chocolate or candy, a snack or seasoning that defines the local area or plays up the wedding theme, or even mini-bottles of spirits for guests to enjoy later on. Others inject excitement with lottery tickets or aim to extend the “life” of their big day with herbs, succulents, or other mini plants for guests to take home and nurture. Meaningful keepsakes like a personalized candle or coasters are nice, too. But they’ve been done. And done again. Many of us have a collection already. We offer something better. A favor that’s unique yet functional, so your guests can use them regularly for years to come.

24 Copper Wedding Ideas for Any Type of Affair
Add a metallic touch to your big day, from glamorous soirées to industrial fêtes.
Silver and gold are common metallic hues that couples often rely on to accentuate their wedding, but if you’re eager to break the mold, you’re probably on the hunt for something that feels a bit more unexpected. Enter: Copper. This shade still achieves the same statement-making effect as its other metallic counterparts, but it’s a welcome change from the more popular options. Copper is a pinkish-orange color that’s warm and shiny, and we like that it has the ability to seamless blend in with your overarching wedding décor while simultaneously adding a glitzy and eye-catching pop. By dousing your big day in copper elements, you’ll bring a unique and distinctive flair to your aesthetic that your guests won’t stop talking about.
Whether you’re getting married in an opulent ballroom or an industrial warehouse, there are plenty of ways to integrate this lustrous hue into your décor. Bring the glossy shade to your wedding look by choosing copper tones for your makeup or jewelry. Then, deck out your ceremony in the hue, from bronzed-brushed chairs to a copper-colored arch. Once you’ve traded vows, consider sipping on Moscow mules in copper mugs and dining on chargers painted in the rich color. Of course, you don’t have to submerge your nuptials in the pinkish-orange tint to make an impression. Adding a subtle touch will be just as noteworthy, and you can combine the metallic shade with other colors, such as navy blue or terracotta, to round off your palette.
From your welcome sign to your tablescape, we’re sharing our favorite ways to make copper part of your special day. Read on for 24 copper wedding ideas that will make any type of affair shine.
Calligraph Your Invitations in Copper
Once your guests open their invitations, they’ll get a sneak peek at your wedding's design concept. To establish your color palette right off the bat, choose a font color in a copper tint. When this couple got married at their elegant wedding in Big Sur , they used the metallic hue to relay information about their upcoming celebration, and they even included an illustration of the sunset in the same gleaming hue to introduce their botanical outdoor setting. To make sure the typeface stands out, opt for a darker background colorway, such as emerald green.
Add the Hue to Your Makeup Look
To manufacture a bronzed glow, bring the metallic color to your glam. With just a few swipes, copper eyeshadow will brighten your eyes and match the rest of your décor. Choose a contoured look with the deepest color on the inner and outer corners of your eyelid or pair the rosy shade with other neutrals, like deep brown or warm peach. This color looks good on every eye type.
Accessorize With the Stylish Shade
Accessories are the key to elevating any outfit, even on your wedding day. Instead of the classic silver or gold jewels, deck out your ensemble in copper. Wear diamond earrings set in the pink-orange tone, complete your ring stack with a copper band, or top off your hairstyle with a beaded headpiece featuring the rosy tint.
Welcome Guests in a Glamorous Way
When combined with vintage pieces, copper exudes old Hollywood glamour. One look we love? A gilded antique mirror with copper calligraphy to use as your welcome sign for old-world nuptials. You can even create the design yourself by sourcing a second-hand frame, painting the exterior in the metallic tone, and writing out the details in copper.
Choose a Metallic Frame
Looking for another alternative to welcome your guests to your soirée? Use a copper rod to frame your signage. Suspending a banner with a cute phrase, such as “Forever your always,” will set the tone, while additional decorations, like flowers, greenery, and candles, will help create a romantic setting.
Make Your Altar Glow
Adding a touch of copper to your altar is a stunning way to enact this warm tint. When paired with lush greenery and white blooms, copper takes a supporting role but does so in a complementary way. A metallic base covered in plants is perfect for garden soirées in the great outdoors.
Accentuate a Bohemian Design
Copper has an earthy, effortless feel to it that makes it a natural fit for bohemian bashes . To seamlessly integrate this metal into your celebration, pair copper touches with pampas grass, dried palm leaves, trailing greenery, and dried flowers in neutral shades. A ceremony arch with overlapping copper rods flanked with wild installations will help your vision take shape.
Select Apt Seating
Seating arrangements with a copper finish will add an unexpected and contemporary edge to your ceremony. With multiple rows of copper chairs, this bold hue will easily become the primary focus of your ceremony. Tropical greenery, glass vases, and black accents will help bring out the warm tones. Rooftop weddings overlooking the skyline and industrial venues with exposed brick walls are the ideal place to make this idea come to life.
Suspend Copper-Tinted String Lights
Lighting is one of the best ways to set the mood for the festivities. By hanging strands of copper lights from above, you’ll create an enchanting fairy-tale atmosphere at any setting. Consider using string lights in the rich metal to illuminate the path from the ceremony to the reception (like this couple did at their fall garden wedding in California ) or hang them from the ceiling at your reception.
Use the Metal to Assign Your Seats
Whether copper is one of the main hues in your color palette or a secondary shade, bringing the metal to your seating chart or escort card display is guaranteed to evoke elegance. Combined with a greenery border and accompanied by intricate calligraphy, you’ll create a setup that’s both opulent and inviting. This couple’s display, featuring wine stoppers as escort cards at their Chilean-inspired nuptials in Napa Valley , is an exemplary example.
Complement an Autumnal Aesthetic
Since a golden tint is naturally found in fall foliage, copper is a suitable complement to an autumnal fête . If you’re saying “I do” while the treetops are bursting with vibrancy, channel the colors of the season with copper, red, orange, and yellow tones. Number your tables in the warm metallic hue, and then, station your seating chart with an arrangement of leaves and flowers in matching shades.
Opt for a Boozy, Color-Coordinated Display
Are you looking for a fun and interactive way to direct friends and family to their seats? Look to boozy escort cards . To match your color palette, serve cocktails in copper mugs with stirrers or labels featuring each of your attendees’ names, and arrange them on copper shelving for a cohesive look. You can also set up this station at your ceremony to encourage guests to mingle prior to the service.
Adorn Your Lounge Area With Lanterns
While lounge areas aren’t a requirement, they offer a reprieve for guests who want to take a break from the dance floor, while building upon your overarching design concept. Lining the perimeter of your lounge with copper lanterns will radiate comfort and relaxation in a sophisticated way. Take cues from this couple, who brought metallic light fixtures in various shapes and sizes to their tropical wedding in Brazil . Combined with wicker furniture, the decorative details took on a laid-back, beachy look.
Settle on a Celestial Design
If you’re hosting a celestial-inspired wedding , copper is one hue you’ll want to include in your color scheme since the bronzed tint is reminiscent of the constellations. An effortless way to accomplish this look is decorating your bar, linens, and signage in a star-studded pattern that’s painted in copper. You can also hang star-shaped light fixtures in the metallic shade to complete your otherworldly setup.
Emphasize the Accents
On the other hand, instead of making copper the primary focus of your bar, add a touch of the metal with a few accents. Copper lanterns that house floating candles and copper vases brimming with colorful floral arrangements against a wooden surface will help produce a rustic, pared-back vibe.
Make Sure Your Barware Matches
In addition to decorations, every bar needs the essentials to be a true success. Stock your setup with Champagne buckets in copper to keep your bottles of bubbly beverages cool. Then, give your design a boost with copper add-ons, whether it’s amber candle holders or glass vases featuring metallic bases.
Display Your Guest Book Alongside the Metal
Since your wedding day goes by in the blink of an eye, many couples set up a wedding guest book to compile a keepsake that allows them to relive every special moment from the day whenever they look back at it. At your copper-colored nuptials, ask your guests to offer well-wishes via a sign pinned on a copper clipboard. Not only will you designate a place for your memories to live on, but you’ll also reinforce your theme.
Don’t Forget to Decorate the Ceiling
Couples often pay a lot of attention to their tablescapes, but filling the overhead space with decorations will up the ante. For a touch of copper, cover your ceiling in 3D stars to draw the gaze upward and make a large, barren room feel more cozy and intimate. Adding these accents to an indoor space will also bring the outdoors in by recreating a starry night sky, especially in dim lighting.
Enjoy Dinner by Candlelight
Copper already evokes a warm glow, so lining your tables with taper candles in the bronzed shade will further produce a dreamy ambiance. When placed against a white linen runner and beside neutral flowers, crystal glassware, and black chargers, the metallic hue will pop. Consider using these candlesticks at a modern museum wedding, a glamorous ballroom setting, or a rustic barn venue.
Mix in Marble
Other natural patterns and hues, such as marble, are the perfect accompaniment to copper. Since the shiny metal and the crystallized rock are both earthy materials, when they’re combined with one another, they bring an organic and visually appealing touch to any wedding. Candle holders featuring copper and marble features placed on a runner with copper flecks will blend into a natural setting.
Set Out Copper Mugs
Copper mugs are one of the most common ways to infuse your wedding with the rich hue. While they make a beautiful escort card display, you can also set each table with the metallic cup. Complete the setup with matching flatware and candle holders.
Combine Various Metals
Instead of a copper-colored tablescape, mix different metals for an unexpected yet luminescent look. Copper chargers flanked by gold flatware will produce an arrangement that’s filled with texture and shine. You can even bring a hint of bronze to your centerpieces with toffee, peach, and cream florals.
Incorporate a Splash of Navy Blue
If you’re looking for more hues to add to your color palette besides copper, consider navy blue. The warm, glossy hue paired with the deep shade will provide a stunning contrast that simply demands attention. Include these colors at a coastal bash on the beach or a bohemian celebration on a mountain.
Showcase Sweets Covered in Copper
All-white wedding cakes transcend time, but for an out-of-the-box design with a dramatic edge, decorate your confection in copper fondant. If you’re serving a two-tier cake , cover the first layer in a solid shade and splatter drip icing on the bottom tier. A cluster of real flowers stationed at either corner will add a prolific flair.

When a Morning Person and a Night Person Fall in Love
Despite differing schedules, Kelly Downey and Gregory Harrington, a celebrated violinist, found a way to make things work.
By Linda Marx
Gregory Anthony Harrington, a celebrated solo violinist, had experienced years of unfulfilling relationships with women he said couldn’t understand his commitment to music. Kelly Cathleen Downey was also fed up with attempts at relationships: Dates, often two to three times a week, typically went nowhere.
The two decided to take a chance on each other after connecting on Bumble in the fall of 2019.
They agreed to meet in early December at Kaia Wine Bar on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, where they talked nonstop about culture, travel, work and wine.
“Kelly was so comforting, interesting and beautiful, with such grace, that somewhere between my first and second of nine glasses of robust cabernet sauvignon, I knew I wanted to see her again,” said Mr. Harrington, 49.
Ms. Downey, 42, who has Irish heritage on her father’s side, said she liked Mr. Harrington’s Irish accent and thought he was cute. After they closed down the bar, they headed to the nearby Auction House bar, which they also closed down.
“I liked Greg right away because conversation flowed effortlessly, and it was fun talking about our Irish backgrounds,” said Ms. Downey, the senior vice president of communications for Shamin Abas, a public relations and experiential marketing company in New York.
Mr. Harrington, who was born in Dublin but has lived in New York City since 1999, recently celebrated the 20th anniversary of his solo debut at Carnegie Hall. In March, he performed for President Biden, members of Congress and Leo Varadkar, the former prime minister of Ireland, at the Capitol in Washington. He received a bachelor’s degree in international commerce with Spanish from University College Dublin, and a master’s in music from American College Dublin.
After several more dates, Mr. Harrington told Ms. Downey that he was flying to Dublin for the holidays, and would try to meet her after he returned around 9:30 p.m. on New Year’s Eve.
“I was really surprised when he entered Whiskey Tavern at 11:45, because I had been burned so many times,” said Ms. Downey, who grew up in Farmington Hills, Mich., and received a bachelor’s in advertising from Michigan State University. “We shared our first New Year’s kiss which sealed the deal for me.”
In March 2020, the lockdown from the coronavirus pandemic greatly changed their dating style. He lived in Manhattan’s Inwood neighborhood — two trains and a bus ride from Ms. Downey’s Upper East Side apartment. They saw each other on weekends, but both had limited income. Ms. Kelly’s company lost clients; Mr. Harrington’s professional world evaporated.

“Since public performances ceased, and I didn’t see the end in sight, it put a lot of strain on a young relationship,” he said. “I earned about $900 in 18 months from playing the violin.”
Their compatibility and love grew through the financial challenges, but they faced more conflict after June 2021, when they moved in together in Hamilton Heights. Each worked at home, though they kept opposite hours. Ms Downey is in bed by 10 p.m., the time Mr. Harrington finds much of his inspiration.
“I am most creative in the silence from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m.,” Mr. Harrington said. “Kelly has a very structured day with regular hours.”
He admitted to being “loud, intense and meticulously repetitive at home” until rehearsals start. Ms. Downey said she respects his way of preparing for gigs, but thrives on serenity with no noise pollution in her work environment.
“I prefer that a client on a Zoom call not have to listen to delightful violin music in the background,” she said. However, “our personalities are aligned, and we resolve conflicts by communication.”
On July 21, 2023, while visiting the fjords of Bergen, Norway on vacation, Mr. Harrington proposed to Ms. Downey atop the Revurtjernet Viewpoint.
On Sept. 6, the couple wed at the Manhattan Marriage Bureau, with Michael McSweeney, the city clerk, officiating. It was witnessed by two friends, Shane Naughton and Laura Chalcroft, who joined them after for a celebratory dinner at Chambers, a restaurant in TriBeCa.
They are planning a celebration for 120 guests on Oct. 2 at Bellingham Castle, the centerpiece of a 17-acre estate in County Louth, Ireland. Mr. Harrington is curating the music and will also perform.
“Our relationship has been filled with the little victories of sharing Saturday morning coffee, being caring and empathetic without saying a word,” he said. “And just enjoying this lovely journey.”
