The 6 best Alaska cruise shore excursions — from heli-hiking to whale watching

Gene Sloan

There are some cruise destinations — Barcelona, for instance, or Venice — where you really don't need to sign up for shore excursions . You can just walk off the ship and head to the major attractions on your own.

For the most part, the ports of Alaska aren't like that.

To get the most out of an Alaska cruise , you'll want to sign up for a tour in most if not all of the ports you visit. And not just any old tour. You'll be looking for the best Alaska shore excursions that get you out into the Alaska backcountry.

For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter.

In Alaska, many of the biggest "attractions" — breathtaking mountain landscapes, glaciers, fjords, breaching whales and feeding bears, for instance — are related to the Great Outdoors. As a result, many of the best Alaska shore excursions for cruisers are found outside of the towns where ships stop. If you just stay in the towns and explore on your own, you'll miss a big part of what Alaska is all about.

Picking the best Alaska shore excursions

People who know me know that I love talking about Alaska port towns. This isn't just because I spent more than two decades writing about Alaska and other cruise destinations for major newspapers. For many years, I was the co-author of Frommer's "Alaska Cruises & Ports of Call" guide. In researching nearly half a dozen editions of that book, I spent many days exploring each of the major cruise ports in the state. I've tried a large number of the shore excursions in places such as Juneau, Skagway and Ketchikan. I've also poked around these towns a lot on my own.

As noted above, my biggest message to anyone planning an Alaska cruise is to get out of the towns . Sign up for something — a hike, a rafting trip, a train ride, a fishing outing — that gets you out into Alaska's spectacular outdoor settings.

But I also have a few specific, top-line pro tips when you're thinking about the best Alaska shore excursions:

  • Get up in the air . It'll be expensive. We're talking $250 or more per person. But there's nothing like seeing the grandeur of Alaska from a helicopter or floatplane. The Juneau Icefield, in particular, is a sight to behold. It covers around 1,500 square miles. You can see it on a flightseeing tour from Juneau, with some tours including landings on the ice.
  • Don't miss the whales. Even if you're not a big wildlife person, you'll be mesmerized by the humpback whales of Alaska. They are huge (at up to 52 feet, longer than a Greyhound bus), and there are boat tours that will get you up close to them. The best places to do this are out of Juneau and also Icy Strait Point if your ship stops there.
  • Splurge for a trip to Misty Fjords National Monument . This glacier-carved wilderness area, not far from Ketchikan, is another don't-miss sight. It's everything you think of when you think of Alaska: icy blue lakes, waterfalls, snow-capped peaks and glacial valleys. The only way to get there is on a boat or floatplane tour, and they typically start at over $200 a person.

Unfortunately, as you can see from the above, many of the most spectacular excursions in Alaskan ports are expensive. But Alaska is not a place to skimp. Alaska is a place where you may want to budget almost as much per person for your shore excursions as you do for your cabin.

That said, you don't have to splurge for a big outing at every call. In Juneau, for instance, you can get an outdoor experience with a relatively inexpensive trip to the nearby Mendenhall Glacier. It's just 12 miles from the cruise ship docks and reachable by bus or taxi. The bus will set you back an astounding $45 per person, round-trip, which I find an intolerable gouge (but … it is what it is). If you have a few people, you're probably better off with a taxi, which runs around $35 each way. For two or three people traveling together, it's not all that pricey a trip.

Either way you do it, you'll find some nice hiking trails around Mendenhall Glacier and a visitor center. There's a creek there, too, where I've sometimes seen salmon running. One time, I even saw a bear. Speaking of which: A bear is something you think you want to see in Alaska until you actually see one. Then you're just hoping you don't get eaten.

I should also be clear that the towns themselves aren't devoid of attractions. While I highly encourage Alaska-bound cruisers to get out into the wilderness, there are plenty of worthwhile things to do in each of the main port towns.

In Juneau, food tours have become popular; think King crab bisque and Alaska salmon. The Alaska State Museum is beautiful and worth a visit. Skagway is like a Gold Rush-themed movie set. You should at least walk its main street (Broadway), with its wooden-board sidewalks. If you're a craft beer fan, like me , you also might want to sample a Spruce Tip Blonde Ale at the Skagway Brewing Company. It's made with Sitka spruce tips picked locally in the spring.

In Ketchikan, you should save a few minutes to stroll up Creek Street, along Ketchikan Creek, where you might spot salmon running. It's the ultimate Alaska selfie spot.

How to book the best Alaska shore excursions

The simplest way to book an Alaska shore excursion is through your cruise line. You check a box on an online form before sailing or while on board, and — poof! — it's all arranged. They send a ticket to your room, and when you walk off the ship, a tour guide will be waiting for you.

Another way to go is to book directly with a tour operator in one of the ports. Many of the tour operators you'll find in Alaskan ports are the same tour operators that operate the ship-sponsored excursions. Often, the tours that the local tour operators will sell you are the same tours that the cruise lines are selling you, at the same price . Shopping around isn't necessarily going to get you anywhere.

Indeed, in some cases, the cruise lines own the tour operators in Alaska ports, or at least a piece of them. For instance, the parent company of Princess Cruises and Holland America is a part-owner of Skagway's big attraction, the White Pass & Yukon Route Railway.

That said, you can sometimes get discounts by calling a tour operator directly. I've had some luck with that over the years. It's hit or miss.

The 6 best Alaska shore excursions

Below, I've listed six of my all-time favorite Alaska shore excursions. These all are tours that you'll find in the tour lineups at every major cruise line that operates in Alaska. That said, different lines sometimes have different names for these tours — and sometimes different pricing.

For the listings below, I've used the tour names and pricing listed in the current tour sheets at Princess, which along with sister line Holland America, is the biggest cruise operator in Alaska.

Dog-sledding and glacier adventure by helicopter

Cost: $669.95 per person

Port where available: Juneau

best cruise excursions alaska

For those with a hefty bankroll, this might be the ultimate Alaska shore excursion. Combining helicopter flightseeing over the seemingly endless Juneau Icefield with a landing on a glacier for dog sledding, it hits two of Alaska's most iconic experiences.

It's also insanely expensive, as I know from firsthand experience. I once took my entire family of five on this excursion, dropping more than $2,000 in the process. That's a huge chunk of change for an outing that lasts three hours.

But I'll tell you this: I don't regret doing it. Not one bit. For starters, the views of the Juneau Icefield as you fly to and from the dog-sledding camp are incredible (assuming the weather cooperates). But the real joy was seeing my three young girls interacting with the teams of Alaskan huskies that live at the camp.

Once you arrive at the camp, you'll meet the dogs and their mushers, see where they live, get a quick tutorial in mushing, and then head out for a spin around the camp on a dog-pulled sled.

Whale watching and wildlife quest

Cost: $189.95

best cruise excursions alaska

If it's Alaska's famous humpback whales that you want to see, you'll want to book a whale-watching tour. The waters around Juneau are particularly known for humpback whales — so much so that the operator of this excursion offers a whale-sighting guarantee.

Setting off from the Juneau harbor in a whale-watching boat, you'll cruise to nearby areas to see not just humpback whales but harbor seals and sea lions, too. You might even spot a killer whale or porpoise.

The boat used for this excursion has both inside and outdoor viewing areas. The trips last about four hours, including transfer time from your cruise ship to the whale-watching boat.

Related: The ultimate list of Alaska cruise tips

Note that if you have a big enough group, it sometimes pays to arrange a private boat out of Juneau to take you to see humpback whales. Many lines offer a private boat charter for whale watching as a tour option, or you can arrange one through a local company.

Klondike rock climbing and rappelling

Cost: $119.95

Port where available: Skagway

best cruise excursions alaska

If you're like me, you may be a little terrified at the idea of climbing the sheer face of a rock cliff. But don't let that scare you away from this 3 1/4-hour tour. It's a hoot.

Experienced climbing guides will meet you at your ship and drive you up the Klondike Highway to an area of granite cliffs that's the perfect playground for beginner and more seasoned climbers alike. Upon arrival, the guides provide you with all the gear you need — climbing shoes, helmets and harnesses — for a safe scramble up a 70-foot-high wall. They'll also offer plenty of instruction (and encouragement) plus a snack of trail mix and hot chocolate.

If it all sounds a bit daunting, know that you don't need any experience at climbing to do it; I sure didn't have any when I tried it, nor did my young daughters, who absolutely loved it. There are multiple routes up the cliffs, some perfect for beginners. After making it to the top, you'll rappel back down — an entirely different kind of thrill.

White Pass & Yukon Route Railway ride

Cost: $149.95

best cruise excursions alaska

Call it the iconic attraction of Skagway, Alaska. A ride into the mountains on this narrow-gauge railroad is the tour everybody takes when visiting the Gold Rush town-turned-tourist hub. And for good reason. It offers an easy way to get deep into the Great Alaskan Outdoors.

Truth be told, I'm a fan of more active excursions. But for someone who isn't going to hike, bike, horseback ride or raft their way through the wilderness around Skagway (there are tours for all of those things, too), a ride on the White Pass & Yukon Railway is one of the best ways to get a glimpse of the area's classic Alaskan scenery.

From the comfort of a vintage rail car, you'll get stunning views of mountains, gorges, glacial rivers and waterfalls as you climb nearly 3,000 feet to the summit of White Pass — the headwaters to the mighty Yukon River. Designated an International Historic Civil Engineering Landmark, the 20-mile route is a marvel in its own right, with improbably steep grades at times and segments that pass over soaring wooden trestles and around tight, cliff-hanging curves.

Heli-hike and rail adventure

Cost: $399.95

best cruise excursions alaska

This is another tour with a sky-high cost. But, in my opinion, it's well worth the money. Indeed, it's one of my all-time favorite Alaska shore excursions.

The five-hour, Skagway-based outing begins with a transfer from your ship to a nearby helicopter pad, where you'll find a helicopter waiting to whisk you high into the surrounding Sawtooth Mountain Range.

On a quick flight to your destination — a mountain trail in the Tongass National Forest — you'll get spectacular views of the mountains and Goat Lake. You'll land at Glacier Station, a remote mountain helicopter pad alongside the White Pass & Yukon Railway tracks. From there, you'll set off on a two- to six-mile guided wilderness hike on a trail along the Skagway River. The highlight of the hike: a magnificent view of Laughton Glacier.

Returning to Glacier Station, you'll end the day with a ride back to Skagway on the White Pass & Yukon Railway, which makes a special stop to pick you up.

Misty Fjords National Monument by seaplane

Cost: $299.95

Port where available: Ketchikan

best cruise excursions alaska

There's nothing that says Alaska quite like a trip in a floatplane. And, if you're going to do a floatplane ride, there's nowhere better than in Ketchikan. You'll find a small armada of floatplanes waiting to take you to nearby Misty Fjords National Monument.

Misty Fjords is one of those quintessential Alaska destinations that's so beautiful you just want to cry. That is, if it's not too "misty" to see it. It got its name for a reason. The area is often shrouded in clouds and drizzly rain. Ketchikan is known as one of the rainiest places in North America, with over 13 feet of rain each year. So, yeah, bring a rain jacket.

But, also get ready for lovely views of glacier-carved fjords, cliffs and rock walls jutting thousands of feet out of the ocean. The whole thing is covered with temperate rainforests and features huge waterfalls (thanks to all that rain). It's definitely a sight to see.

Note that there often are two versions of this tour available: One that is about two hours in length and only includes flightseeing and a slightly longer version that includes a water landing within Misty Fjord National Monument.

7 Alaska Cruise Excursions That Are Worth The Money

best cruise excursions alaska

  • Alaska Cruises
  • Cruises and Sailing
  • Destinations
  • Shore Excursions
  • Types of Travel
  • United States

Excursions come in all shapes and sizes. Some cruise lines include all excursions in the cost of your cruise passage, allowing you to choose the ones that suit your desires. Others include no excursions, which helps keep the initial cost of the cruise low, but you may find your onboard charging slipping higher than you expected. Still other cruise lines offer a hybrid option, where the basic tours are included and there is an upcharge for the higher-priced options.

A whale watch tour near Icy Strait Point, Alaska.

1. Whales, Wildlife, And Brown Bear Search

For a full-day, 5.5-hour wildlife adventure, try the Whales, Wildlife, and Brown Bear Search out of Icy Strait Point. This excursion is offered by Princess cruise lines.

On this guaranteed whale sighting tour, jump on a high-speed catamaran to cruise the very active feeding ground of the humpback whale. Return to shore for an often bumpy ride to the Spasski River for a guided drive in search of brown bear, black-tailed deer, and bald eagles. The walking portion involves covering about a half-mile of gravel and boardwalk pathways, meaning this excursion requires moderate exertion.

Views of the Mendenhall Glacier in Alaska.

2. Mendenhall Glacier Exploration

Alaska is all about the ice. Glaciers are ubiquitous and the variety of glacier-centric tour options runs from genial walks to full-on glacial climbs.

Mendenhall Glacier is the top excursion for your Alaska cruise’s Juneau stop. You can choose from a large variety of tours, and many providers have handicap-accessible options. They vary in time and price, meaning there’s a glacier tour option for everyone.

Princess Cruises offers the creme de la creme Mendenhall Helicopter Glacier Trek . If you are searching for the bucket-list Alaska cruise item, this is it. The 4- to 5-hour heli/walking tour starts around $480. You will be fitted for outerwear, hard hats, mountaineering boots, and crampons. Your kit will include a much-needed ice ax. After you touch down on the glacier, your guide will lead you on a 2-hour hike. You do not need experience, but you will be hiking for about two miles on uneven terrain.

Disney offers the 5-Glacier Seaplane Exploration that explores the Juneau icefield and five of its glaciers. Your seaplane journey takes you over the Tongass National Forest before you soar over Norris, Hole-In-The-Wall, Taku, and the East and West Twin glaciers. Wildlife spotting is very likely; keep on the lookout for eagles, bears, and moose. This tour is perfect for adventurers who require or prefer little or no walking. The minimum age is 2 years old, making it accessible for most family members.

The fishing port of Ketchikan in Alaska.

3. Sport Fishing

Salmon is king in Alaska, but there are many types of fishing adventures suitable for everyone from novices to hardened anglers.

Disney cruise line also offers a Ketchikan Alaska Fish Camp and Wilderness Dinner . The 5.5-hour fishing trip is available to family members 5 and up. Once you are outfitted with authentic Alaska fishing gear, you can cast your line in hopes of catching “The Big One.” After several hours of fishing, head to the campsite where chuck-wagon cooks will prep and cook your catch, serving up a wonderful outdoor dinner.

Panning for gold in Alaska.

4. Panning For Gold

If you are traveling with teens or tweens, gold panning in Skagway is a fun, hands-on activity for the entire gang.

Princess offers a 6-hour exclusive Gold Panning, Sled Dog, and Scenic Railway excursion. The tour includes a gold panning lesson during which you can participate in a prospecting session in a controlled pavilion. You will also watch a dog sled demonstration run that includes a meet-and-greet with the sled dogs and musher. The tour concludes with a historic train ride through Bridal Veil Falls, Inspiration Point, and Dead Horse Gulch. This is a great tour for everyone in the family and requires only mild exertion.

Tourists on the Prince William Sound 26 Glacier Cruise.

5. Bering Sea Crab Fishermen

Hop aboard Holland America Line’s Bering Sea Crab Fishermen excursion and explore the world of Disney’s Deadliest Catch TV Series.

In the port of Ketchikan, travel along the Inside Passage with experienced fisherman hauling up the day’s king crab catch. Guests as young as 5 years old are welcome aboard the ship where stories of Alaska wilderness and maritime adventures will astound wide-eyed guests.

Food from the Silversea Alaska Culinary Experience.

6. Food Tours

There is no shortage of tours for the foodie in your group. Disney’s Woodhouse Wine Estates tasting visit combined with a downtown Seattle tour is a fun date night excursion without the kids. Princess offers a Juneau Foodie Walking Tour in conjunction with Bon Appetit where you can sample some of Alaska’s finest local cuisine.

View of Sitka, Alaska.

7. Scenic Drives In Sitka

Viking Cruises offers a 1.5-hour Scenic Sitka by Motor Coach excursion that is included in the passage price. This tour does include some incline walking when you visit Sitka National Historical Park, where you can view the site’s 18 totem poles. Learn Sitka’s Russian and U.S. history in this Southeast Alaska city.

Pro Tip: Booking Excursions

It is a good idea to choose an excursion that is booked through your cruise line. They will, in good faith, wait for you if there is a delay in your returning to the ship. If the ship cannot wait, they may make accommodations to get you to the next port of call. If you book an excursion with a private tour company, though, you are essentially on your own to get to the ship on time. If you miss the departure because of the tour arriving late, you will be responsible for catching up with the ship at the next port of call. That could be a considerable distance if they are at sea for two days, and some of the Alaska cruises have several consecutive days at sea.

Alaska Cruises are a bucket-list item you will want to explore at any age. You will find the history, natural beauty, and fresh-from-the-earth (or ocean) cuisine bring you closer to nature.

Princess Cruises is unmatched when it comes to its onboard food, service, accommodations, and entertainment on Alaskan cruises.

This is one of their most popular Alaskan cruise routes and includes stops at Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan, and Victoria, BC. You’ll also have a full scenic cruising day through Glacier Bay National Park.

Best Cruise Excursions in Juneau

The first stop on this cruise will be in Juneau, the enchanting capital city of Alaska.

Most Epic Alaska Cruise Excursions | Best excursions in Juneau #simplywander

Juneau is steeped in history and offers the perfect mix of beauty and culture.

The city was founded during the Alaska Gold Rush in 1880. It is named after Joe Juneau, one of the prospectors who made the initial discovery of gold.

Most Epic Alaska Cruise Excursions | Best excursions in Juneau #simplywander

Today, remnants of Juneau’s past can be explored at the Last Chance Mining Museum, which showcases mining artifacts and provides insights into the gold rush era.

Don’t miss the opportunity to explore the Alaska State Museum as well to learn about the region’s rich history and indigenous cultures.

Additionally, the Alaska State Capitol building, constructed in 1931, offers a glimpse into the city’s political history.

If you want to get out and explore the natural beauty that Juneau has to offer, consider taking a tour of the Mendenhall Glacier, an impressive river of ice.

You can even experience a dog sledding tour on the Mendenhall Glacier, where you’ll take a helicopter to the glacier and then mush through the breathtaking Alaska wilderness.

While at Mendenhall Glacier, be sure to enjoy a hike along the scenic trail to Nugget Falls to witness the stunning waterfall cascading into a turquoise pool.

The Mount Roberts Tramway also takes you a staggering 1,800 feet to the top of the mountain for a panoramic view of Juneau’s surrounding mountains and fjords.

Most Epic Alaska Cruise Excursions | Best excursions in Juneau #simplywander

Visitors can also experience an aerial view of Juneau’s most stunning glaciers on a Five-Glacier Sea Plane Exploration.

Most Epic Alaska Cruise Excursions | Best excursions in Juneau #simplywander

Juneau is also known for being the best place for whale watching in Alaska.

We booked the Whale Watching & Alaska Salmon Bake Excursion where we were able to see humpback whales feeding in the pristine waters of Auke Bay.

Most Epic Alaska Cruise Excursions | Best excursions in Juneau #simplywander

We even had the rare opportunity of spotting a whale calf breaching out of the water twice! It was such an unforgettable experience.

The tour begins at the cruise ship port where you’ll board a bus and take a 25-minute narrated ride to Auke Bay.

Most Epic Alaska Cruise Excursions | Best excursions in Juneau #simplywander

You’ll then climb aboard a tour boat and head out onto the water in search of whales.

Most Epic Alaska Cruise Excursions | Best excursions in Juneau #simplywander

The captains know the best places to go. They even recognize the whales and know them by name due to the unique pattern on their fluke that identifies them like a fingerprint.

Most Epic Alaska Cruise Excursions | Best excursions in Juneau #simplywander

You are even guaranteed to see a whale on the tour or you get your money back.

Most Epic Alaska Cruise Excursions | Best excursions in Juneau #simplywander

While on the tour, there is a naturalist on board to educate the visitors and share interesting facts about whales. For instance, did you know that humpback whales eat 2,000-3,000 pounds of fish a day?

Their throats are only the size of a grapefruit, so the small herring that populate Auke Bay are their main cuisine.

Before migrating to Alaska, humpback whales spend six months in Hawaii mating and giving birth. During this time, they go the entire six months without eating.

The humpback whales lose 30% of their body weight in Hawaii, so once they arrive in Juneau they spend 20-22 hours a day looking for food and eating.

They say Alaska is the kitchen and Hawaii is the bedroom, with a very long hallway in between!

While in Alaska, nursing calves gain an average of 5 pounds per hour! Once fully grown, a humpback whale averages between 40-50 tons and is about 40-50 feet long.

It was so fascinating to learn more about these beautiful marine animals, as well as other local wildlife, and to be able to observe them in their natural habitat.

Most Epic Alaska Cruise Excursions | Best excursions in Juneau #simplywander

Only 1% of the population has a chance to see a whale in their lifetime, so be sure to take advantage of this incredible opportunity. It’s an experience our family will never forget!

Most Epic Alaska Cruise Excursions | Best excursions in Juneau #simplywander

After the whale-watching tour, you’ll board a bus and head to a traditional Alaska salmon bake.

Most Epic Alaska Cruise Excursions | Best excursions in Juneau #simplywander

Here you will enjoy a buffet lunch that includes fresh salmon grilled over an open flame.

Most Epic Alaska Cruise Excursions | Best excursions in Juneau #simplywander

The outdoor tables are nestled on the banks of the scenic Gold Creek where gold was first discovered in Juneau.

Most Epic Alaska Cruise Excursions | Best excursions in Juneau #simplywander

The food is delicious and the setting is absolutely beautiful!

Pile your plate high with salmon, barbecue chicken, scalloped potatoes, cornbread, rice, beans, and salad.

Most Epic Alaska Cruise Excursions | Best excursions in Juneau #simplywander

They even had homemade blueberry cake for dessert!

Most Epic Alaska Cruise Excursions | Best excursions in Juneau #simplywander

Our kids especially loved drinking hot chocolate and roasting s’mores around the fire after they were done eating.

Most Epic Alaska Cruise Excursions | Best excursions in Juneau #simplywander

After enjoying a delicious home-cooked meal, visitors can take a short walk along the creek to view the Salmon Creek waterfall.

Most Epic Alaska Cruise Excursions | Best excursions in Juneau #simplywander

There is even an entrance to an old abandoned mine near the waterfall.

Most Epic Alaska Cruise Excursions | Best excursions in Juneau #simplywander

Gold panning is also available where guests can pan for real flecks of gold to take home.

Most Epic Alaska Cruise Excursions | Best excursions in Juneau #simplywander

If you visit between June and July, you will even have the chance to see hundreds of salmon spawning in the creek.

The bus will then take you back to the cruise port where you can walk around the town.

Most Epic Alaska Cruise Excursions | Best excursions in Juneau #simplywander

Be sure to stop at Tracy’s King Crab Shack to try their famous crab cakes!

Most Epic Alaska Cruise Excursions | Best excursions in Juneau #simplywander

People come from all over just to eat their fresh crab cakes. In the summer, you’ll find a line wrapping around the building.

Most Epic Alaska Cruise Excursions | Best excursions in Juneau #simplywander

The ship leaves Juneau Harbor at dusk where you can catch the last of the sun sinking below the mountains.

Most Epic Alaska Cruise Excursions | Best excursions in Juneau #simplywander

As blue hour hits, you’ll set sail to your next destination.

Most Epic Alaska Cruise Excursions | Best excursions in Juneau #simplywander

Best Cruise Excursions in Skagway

The second port on your cruise will be Skagway, the Gateway to the Gold Rush, where you can immerse yourself in the Klondike Gold Rush history.

Most Epic Alaska Cruise Excursions | Best excursions in Skagway #simplywander

From 1897-1898, Skagway became a vital gateway for prospectors heading to the goldfields of the Yukon.

Most Epic Alaska Cruise Excursions | Best excursions in Skagway #simplywander

Over a century after the peak of the gold rush, the town still retains its charming 19th-century atmosphere.

Most Epic Alaska Cruise Excursions | Best excursions in Skagway #simplywander

The Skagway Historic District has been designated as a National Historic Landmark and several cruise excursions offer historical city tours.

Most Epic Alaska Cruise Excursions | Best excursions in Skagway #simplywander

As you walk along Broadway Street, you’ll find that the town’s unique architecture has been preserved and provides a captivating glimpse into the past.

Most Epic Alaska Cruise Excursions | Best excursions in Skagway #simplywander

You’ll find colorful restored buildings from the gold rush era, including the Pantheon Saloon, and the infamous Red Onion Saloon.

Most Epic Alaska Cruise Excursions | Best excursions in Skagway #simplywander

The Red Onion Saloon once operated as a brothel and now serves as a museum.

Another iconic building belongs to the Arctic Brotherhood, a well-respected fraternal organization during the gold rush.

New members had to hike to the top of the nearby mountain and bring back a stick to add to the exterior. It is now covered with over 8,800 sticks.

Most Epic Alaska Cruise Excursions | Best excursions in Skagway #simplywander

Visit the Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park and discover captivating tales of prospectors who once journeyed through here in search of fortune.

Or just stroll along the streets and pick up some souvenirs at one of the many local shops.

Most Epic Alaska Cruise Excursions | Best excursions in Skagway #simplywander

Be sure to also make a stop at the Klondike Doughboy to indulge in their Alaska Fry Bread.

Most Epic Alaska Cruise Excursions | Best excursions in Skagway #simplywander

The pillowy fry bread is coated in cinnamon and sugar and is absolutely heavenly!

Most Epic Alaska Cruise Excursions | Best excursions in Skagway #simplywander

Gold wasn’t actually found in Skagway, it was just a jumping-off point for gold seekers who traversed the 33-mile Chilkoot Trail. This challenging trail offered the shortest route to the Klondike.

For an active adventure, try a hiking excursion along a portion of the historic Chilkoot Trail, retracing the footsteps of gold seekers.

Wildlife enthusiasts can opt for a nature tour, spotting bald eagles, bears, and other native wildlife in their natural habitats.

If you want to experience the beauty of the area, embark on the White Pass and Yukon Route Railroad journey.

This iconic train ride takes you through breathtaking mountain scenery and provides a glimpse into the challenges faced by gold rush prospectors.

And if you’re up for an adventure, I would highly recommend booking the Grizzly Falls Zipline Tour!

Most Epic Alaska Cruise Excursions | Best excursions in Skagway | Grizzly Falls Zipline Tour #simplywander

Our family had the best time soaring over waterfalls and through the moss-covered trees in the Tongass National Forest, the largest temperate rainforest in the world.

Most Epic Alaska Cruise Excursions | Best excursions in Skagway | Grizzly Falls Zipline Tour #simplywander

The tour begins at the cruise terminal where you’ll board a shuttle bus and take a narrated drive through town.

It was interesting to learn more about the history of the town and we were surprised at just how small and remote it is.

In fact, this year’s graduating class only consists of 3 students! The population in the winter is only about 800-1000 people, but in the summer it spikes to 2,500 people.

But you won’t find many modern conveniences here, the closest major grocery store is 2 1/2 hours away in Whitehorse, Canada.

The shuttle bus will continue along the scenic Klondike Highway to the ghost town of Dyea.

Most Epic Alaska Cruise Excursions | Best excursions in Skagway | Grizzly Falls Zipline Tour #simplywander

After a 35-minute drive, you’ll arrive at the base camp where you’ll find a recreated 1800s mining town.

Most Epic Alaska Cruise Excursions | Best excursions in Skagway | Grizzly Falls Zipline Tour #simplywander

You’ll have a few minutes to take a restroom break or browse the general store for souvenirs.

Most Epic Alaska Cruise Excursions | Best excursions in Skagway | Grizzly Falls Zipline Tour #simplywander

You can also enjoy a steaming cup of complimentary hot chocolate at the saloon.

Most Epic Alaska Cruise Excursions | Best excursions in Skagway | Grizzly Falls Zipline Tour #simplywander

Everyone will then board a Unimog, an open-air all-terrain vehicle, and take a rugged 15-minute ride up the mountain to the base of Grizzly Falls.

Most Epic Alaska Cruise Excursions | Best excursions in Skagway | Grizzly Falls Zipline Tour #simplywander

The Unimog drive is part of the adventure as you bounce along the scenic forest road!

Most Epic Alaska Cruise Excursions | Best excursions in Skagway | Grizzly Falls Zipline Tour #simplywander

Once you arrive at the staging area, you’ll have a safety briefing and gear up for your adventure.

Most Epic Alaska Cruise Excursions | Best excursions in Skagway | Grizzly Falls Zipline Tour #simplywander

The 90-minute zipline course will take you along 10 different lines and over 4 suspension bridges.

Most Epic Alaska Cruise Excursions | Best excursions in Skagway | Grizzly Falls Zipline Tour #simplywander

You’ll have a thrilling adventure high above the rushing river and glacially-fed waterfalls.

Most Epic Alaska Cruise Excursions | Best excursions in Skagway | Grizzly Falls Zipline Tour #simplywander

My boys’ favorite was “The Pipeline”, a 750-foot zipline that reaches speeds of 45 miles per hour!

Most Epic Alaska Cruise Excursions | Best excursions in Skagway | Grizzly Falls Zipline Tour #simplywander

Personally, I loved the lines and suspension bridges that took you directly over the falls.

Most Epic Alaska Cruise Excursions | Best excursions in Skagway | Grizzly Falls Zipline Tour #simplywander

It truly is an unforgettable adventure and the beauty is unmatched. You’ll head back to the cruise ship on an adrenaline high!

That evening, the ship will make its way to Glacier Bay National Park.

This is the most scenic portion of the cruise, so be sure to take in the views on the top deck during sunset.

I would highly recommend booking a balcony room and ordering room service breakfast so that you can enjoy a peaceful morning with the views all to yourselves.

Most Epic Alaska Cruise Excursions | Glacier Bay National Park #simplywander

Eating fresh croissants while silently gliding through the glassy waters of the bay in the early morning hours will go down as one of my top 5 most memorable travel experiences of all time.

Most Epic Alaska Cruise Excursions | Glacier Bay National Park #simplywander

The cruise itinerary includes a full day to cruise through Glacier Bay National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Most Epic Alaska Cruise Excursions | Glacier Bay National Park #simplywander

This is one of the most remote and the most beautiful parks in the national parks system. It can only be reached by plane or boat, so not many people have the opportunity to visit.

Most Epic Alaska Cruise Excursions | Glacier Bay National Park #simplywander

Cruise ship regulations are also put in place, and Princess Cruises just so happens to be one of the only cruise lines that has a concession contract to visit Glacier Bay.

Most Epic Alaska Cruise Excursions | Glacier Bay National Park #simplywander

There are over 1,000 glaciers at Glacier Bay and you’ll be awe-struck as you cruise up close to quite a few of them.

Most Epic Alaska Cruise Excursions | Glacier Bay National Park #simplywander

The cruise ship doesn’t port at Glacier Bay, so there are no off-ship excursions offered. But there is still plenty to do!

You’ll spend the day marveling at the immense glaciers, towering snow-capped peaks, and the serene wilderness that surrounds you.

In the morning, park rangers will board the cruise ship where they’ll spend the day providing insightful commentary and enriching your experience with their knowledge of the region’s ecology.

Most Epic Alaska Cruise Excursions | Glacier Bay National Park #simplywander

Our kids especially loved being able to participate in the Junior Ranger Program at Camp Discovery onboard the Alaskan cruise ship.

You’ll also want to take advantage of the unique experience of soaking in the hot tub while surrounded by glaciers or swimming in the heated pool in the shadows of the snow-covered mountains.

Most Epic Alaska Cruise Excursions | Glacier Bay National Park #simplywander

For more information about the ship, see our guide, What to Expect on a Royal Princess Alaska Cruise .

Glacier Bay National Park is not only a natural wonder but also a living testament to the region’s glacial history.

Most Epic Alaska Cruise Excursions | Glacier Bay National Park #simplywander

The park’s glaciers have been slowly retreating since the Little Ice Age, revealing landscapes shaped by ice for thousands of years.

Most Epic Alaska Cruise Excursions | Glacier Bay National Park #simplywander

The landscape is constantly changing due to climate change and other factors, so it truly is a remarkable experience to view the glaciers before they retreat even more.

You also won’t want to miss Creek Street, a picturesque boardwalk lined with colorful buildings and quaint shops.

Instead of being built on solid ground, the historic buildings are built on pilings over Ketchikan Creek because it was too difficult to blast into the surrounding mountain to make room for development.

Creek Street is best visited while on a historic walking tour where you’ll learn more about the area’s interesting and often seedy past.

Booze and brothels were a common theme on Creek Street as it was once home to the red-light district.

10 Best Alaska Cruises to Take This Summer, According to Experts

We spoke to cruise experts to find the best Alaska itineraries to book this year.

best cruise excursions alaska

Taylor McIntyre/Travel + Leisure

With its majestic wildlife, otherworldly glacial scenery, and endless outdoor adventure, a trip to Alaska is one for the books — and the best way to experience it, in our opinion, is by cruise. An Alaska sailing offers travelers the chance to get up close and personal to some of the destination’s most stunning natural wonders (think: Glacier Bay, Hubbard Glacier, the Tracy Arm Fjord, and so much more). Fortunately, when it comes to the best Alaska cruises, options abound, from small-ship luxury sailings and expedition voyages to mega-ships that feel like a floating resort and theme park all in one. Ultimately, explains Travel + Leisure A-List travel advisor Eric Goldring , “The question of which are the ‘best’ cruise lines for Alaska really depends on the guest’s desires as there is a balance between how in-depth they wish to delve into Alaska’s nature and Indigenous culture, what type of onboard experience they desire, and, of course, whether the cruise is family-focused.” To determine which Alaska cruise is best for you, Goldring recommends using a travel advisor “who has actually been to Alaska more than once and on different ships” so that you have “access to important first-hand knowledge.”

According to T+L A-List travel advisor Ashton Palmer , the Alaska cruise season is short (typically from May to September) and availability is limited, which is why travelers should plan their sailings six to eight months ahead of time. While the travel advisor notes that “most trips average a week in length,” he also recommends cruisers allow time to “visit the northern part of the state, including Denali National Park, the Kenai Peninsula, Anchorage, and Fairbanks,” either before or after the cruise. Several cruise lines also offer land extensions (sometimes called “cruisetours”) to make the experience as seamless as possible.

While the Alaska cruise season takes place in the warmer months, be sure to pack a few sweaters — and consider dressing in layers. When I cruised Alaska in summer 2022, the weather was (mostly) warm and sunny; however, when we sailed through Glacier Bay, it was chilly, and I was especially glad to have brought a scarf, hat, and light jacket to help brace the chill. Rob Clabbers , another T+L A-List travel advisor , agrees. What’s more, he says, “Weather can change quickly in Alaska, so one moment you may need a sweater, and the next you’re better off in shorts.”

Dawn Gabree, a travel advisor at Travels by Danielle who specializes in Alaska cruising, deems Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) "excellent for multigenerational families" thanks to the abundance of onboard activities. "Their larger vessels used in the Alaska market ( Encore and Bliss ) feature must-do activities like go-karting, laser tag, and water slides." On the contrary, "Their smaller vessels ( Jewel and Sun ) provide a more intimate atmosphere over the large ships." Regardless of which ship you choose, expect an array of entertainment options, including Broadway-caliber shows, which Gabree describes as "excellent." What's more, she says, "We saw their production of 'Six' on an Alaskan sailing, and it was phenomenal." The travel pro also loves the World's Best Award-winning mega-ship ocean line for its Freestyle Dining program (read: no assigned seating or fixed reservation times) and plentiful dining options to appease even the pickiest of eaters. Lastly, says Gabree, "A huge selling point for NCL is always their Free at Sea promotion, which includes perks like specialty dining, an unlimited open bar, Wi-Fi, and more. "It's a great value, in my honest opinion."

Itinerary: The 7-day Alaska: Dawes Glacier, Juneau, and Ketchikan itinerary sails from Seattle on select dates between April and October. Ports of call include Sitka, Juneau, Ice Strait, and Ketchikan in Alaska, as well as Victoria in Canada. Scenic cruising through the Endicott Arm and Dawes Glacier is also included.

Holland America Line

Tim Rue/Bloomberg via Getty Images

Holland America Line (HAL) — which recently snapped up a 2023 World’s Best Award in the large-ship ocean cruise line category — has been cruising Alaska for over 75 years. HAL prides itself on having more permits for Glacier Bay National Park visits than any other cruise line. The cruise line also offers beloved live music programming, which I got to experience firsthand on a summer 2023 Alaska sailing. Most ships boast a “Music Walk,” a section home to venues like B.B. King's Blues Club, Billboard Onboard (a dueling piano bar), Lincoln Center Stage, and Rolling Stone Rock Room. After our shore excursions, we’d hop back on board the ship for drinks, dinner, and a nightcap at the dueling piano bar to jam out to hits from Billy Joel and Elton John. All of the above make HAL a popular pick among middle-aged and mature couples traveling without kids; however, onboard our summer sailing, I did notice quite a few small children traveling with their parents and grandparents.

The onboard culinary offerings are especially noteworthy. While pulling into port one day, I remember digging into a hearty lunch of fish and chips featuring fresh-caught Alaskan halibut. (HAL is the first cruise line to serve fresh, certified-sustainable Alaskan seafood.) As of September, acclaimed chef Masaharu Morimoto is the Fresh Fish Ambassador as part of the line’s Global Fresh Fish Program . Cruisers can try his flavorful seafood dishes during their sailing.

Itinerary: As a first-time Alaska cruiser, I thoroughly enjoyed the Alaska Explorer itinerary , which cruises round-trip from Seattle between June and September. Enjoy scenic cruising along the Puget Sound and Stephen’s Passage before calling on Juneau, followed by more scenic cruising in Glacier Bay. From there, it’s off to Icy Strait Point, Sitka, Ketchikan, Skagway, and Victoria.

Royal Caribbean International

Royal Caribbean International — or Royal Caribbean for short — offers great fun for families of all ages looking to experience Alaska. As such, it’s no wonder why the mega-ship ocean line is loved by T+L readers and travel advisors alike. What’s more, says Gabree, “Their larger ships (Quantum Class) have equally impressive amenities like skydiving simulators (RipCord by iFLY), the FlowRider surf simulator, and SeaPlex (an indoor recreation center with bumper cars),” says Gabree. The pro is also quick to highlight the North Star observation capsule, which is available on Ovation of the Seas , which cruises Alaska. The attraction whisks passengers over 300 feet above sea level, offering picture-perfect 360-degree views. Put simply, she says, “This is a one-of-a-kind experience when sailing scenic destinations like Alaska.”

The fun continues the minute cruisers disembark in each port, with excursions ranging from dogsledding to private helicopter tours. Back on board, Gabree recommends The Chef’s Table for a truly memorable meal — and I, too, can attest to this. While on board a Caribbean sailing with the cruise line, I had the chance to indulge in this chef- and sommelier-led multi-course food and wine pairing adventure. Four years later, I still find myself dreaming of the delicious circular-shaped dessert known as “The World” — the perfect combo of peanut butter ganache, chocolate mousse, and salted caramel gelato).

Itinerary: Set sail on the aforementioned Ovation of the Seas and embark on a journey through Alaska with Royal Caribbean’s 7-night Alaska Experience itinerary . Cruising round-trip from Seattle, the ship stops in Juneau, Skagway, and Sitka before heading onto Canada, where it calls on Victoria and Vancouver.

Princess Cruises

Taylor McIntyre/Travel + Leisure

Princess Cruises is among T+L readers’ top five favorite mega-ship ocean lines , and its Alaska sailings are not to be missed. Unlike other mega-ship lines, says Gabree, Princess is not at all flashy. That said, she recommends it for “more mature cruisers or those looking for a quieter atmosphere.” So, while you won’t find go-karts or race tracks aboard Princess ships, you can expect incredible educational programming. Don’t miss Puppies on the Piazza, which offers passengers the chance to interact with sled dogs brought on board by local mushers in Skagway. The line also partners with the Glacier Bay National Park rangers and the Discovery Channel to offer unique onboard exhibits and interactive activities like the Jr. Ranger Program. Similarly, says Gabree, “The naturalists that come aboard are extremely knowledgeable.” Last but not least, the service is top-notch. According to the pro, the staff is best described as “attentive and very pleasant.”

Itinerary: Book the 14-day Voyage of the Glaciers Grand Adventure , which sets sail on select dates between May and September. Passengers will cruise round-trip from Vancouver and visit Juneau, Skagway, Anchorage, and Ketchikan. Bonus: Scenic cruising through Glacier Bay National Park, College Fjord, and Hubbard Glacier is also built into the itinerary.

Seabourn Cruise Line

Courtesy of Seabourn

This World’s Best Award-winning cruise line combines the best of expedition-style and luxury cruising, making it a popular pick amongst well-heeled, adventure-seeking travelers. Highlights include bespoke service, all-suite oceanfront accommodations (most with private balconies), world-class dining (the cruise line has a partnership with Michelin-starred chef Thomas Keller), and, last but not least, a swanky country club-esque atmosphere. According to Goldring, both Seabourn Quest and Seabourn Odyssey offer similar Alaska itineraries in 2024; however, it will be the latter’s final sailing since it was sold.

Alaska sailings feature a team of academics, scientists, and naturalists, all of whom are on hand to provide expert insight and lead excursions (think: kayaking and Zodiac tours, hiking, bear viewing, and so on). Also, according to Goldring, Seabourn ships “travel no further north than Juneau” and offer a “more intensive and nature-focused experience.” On a similar note, says Clabbers, thanks to the vessels’ small size, cruisers can “spend more time sailing through places like Misty Fjords, where most ships can’t go.” Back onboard, says Clabbers, “enjoy Champagne and caviar when you like, or relax in your suite, the spa, or elsewhere.”

Itinerary: The 7-day Alaska Fjords and Canadian Inside Passage cruise sails from Juneau to Vancouver, calling on Tracy Arm or Endicott Arm, Wrangell, Rudyerd Bay (Misty Fjords), and, finally, Prince Rupert in British Columbia. Scenic cruising through Stephens Passage, Decision Passage, Stikine Strait, and the Behm Canal are also included in the itinerary.

Celebrity Cruises

jewhyte/Getty Images

Those who prefer a “younger atmosphere on a modern, larger ship with lots of bars and restaurants and entertainment” should consider cruising Alaska aboard the Celebrity Edge, explains Clabbers. (While Edge is the newest Celebrity ship to cruise Alaska, Celebrity Solstice and Celebrity Summit also sail here . ) Per the pro, the seven-night sailings on Edge “include key destinations like Ketchikan and Skagway,” along with a quick visit to Victoria in British Columbia and scenic cruising through the beautiful Endicott Arm Fjord. Additionally, the World’s Best Award-winning line offers round-trip sailings from both Vancouver and Seattle — as well as one-way itineraries between Vancouver and Seward, the latter of which offer more time to explore (read: fewer sea days).

Regardless of the ship, passengers can expect a wide range of entertainment offerings, an abundance of bars, restaurants, and lounges, and a handful of accommodation options. Speaking of the latter, wellness-seeking duos can reserve an AquaClass stateroom, which includes perks like complimentary dining at the exclusive Blu restaurant, their very own spa concierge, and unlimited access to the adults-only Sea Thermal Suite. Alternatively, for a worth-it splurge, opt for a suite in The Retreat, which includes a dedicated team of concierges and butlers, access to a private lounge and/or sundeck (note that the latter is not available on Celebrity Solstice ), premium drinks, Wi-Fi, and access to the private Luminae at The Retreat restaurant, helmed by chef Daniel Boulud.

Itinerary : The aforementioned 7-night Alaska Dawes Glacier itinerary on Celebrity Edge cruises round-trip from Seattle and visits Ketchikan, Endicott Arm Fjord (scenic cruising), Juneau, Skagway, the Inside Passage (scenic cruising), and Victoria.

Viking Ocean Cruises

Courtesy of Viking Cruises

Viking Ocean Cruises recently nabbed a 2023 World’s Best Award in the midsize-ship ocean cruise lines category, coming in at first place for the second year in a row. The line’s identical ocean ships offer a sleek Scandinavian design, which only enhances the tranquil atmosphere on board. The luxury adults-only line is also all-inclusive, covering meals, activities, most beverages, Wi-Fi, port taxes and fees, spa access, and one complimentary excursion in every port of call. Cruisers can bask in the mountain and glacier views from the comfort of their private balcony — and, if they’re lucky, they may even spot a whale or two. Finally, in addition to classic ports like Juneau and Ketchikan, Viking Ocean Cruises’ Alaska itinerary also calls on Valdez, which is chock-full of natural beauty and outdoor adventure.

Itinerary : The 10-night Alaska and the Inside Passage itinerary , which sails between Vancouver and Seward, “is a great choice for curious travelers who have a bit more time and want to learn more about Alaska,” says Clabbers.

Courtesy of Silversea

Those craving a luxury Alaska cruise need not look further than Silversea, says Goldring. Additionally, “While primarily for adults ranging from contemplative to active, Silversea is also a good option for families with more mature children who are more engaged with the journey than onboard child-focused activities.” Silversea guests enjoy all-suite staterooms with butler service and an all-around tony atmosphere. The line’s Door-to-Door All-Inclusive fares cover private airport transfers, economy flights, business-class upgrades or air credits, and shore excursions.

This luxury cruise line offers classic and expedition-style cruising, the latter of which takes aboard the 274-passenger Silver Wind . (Classic cruises, on the other hand, take place on board Silver Muse , Silver Nova , Silver Shadow , Silver Whisper , or Silver Moon ). Nova and Moon offer the Sea and Land Taste program (S.A.L.T), offering culinary connoisseurs the incredible opportunity to experience the local food scene and culture both on and off the ship. Last but not least, keep in mind that Silversea sails between Vancouver and Seward (with the exception of one September 2024 itinerary, which sails from Nome to Vancouver).

Itinerary : The 7-day Vancouver to Seward sailing on board Silver Nova features Inside Passage scenic cruising and stops in Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway, and Sitka. Before disembarking in Seward, enjoy scenic cruising around Hubbard Glacier.

UnCruise Adventures

Courtesy of UnCruise

“If you are looking for a more casual and laid-back experience, Seattle-based UnCruise Adventures offers down-to-earth trips with enthusiastic naturalist guides, simple accommodations, and hearty local cuisine,” says Palmer. Mary Curry , another T+L A-List travel advisor, echoes these sentiments, explaining that “small ships are the absolute best way to see Alaska if your goal is to immerse yourself in nature and wildlife.” While the cabins are no-frills, Curry stresses that the main focus of the cruise is “getting off the ship and exploring everything Alaska's Inside Passage has to offer.” With that said, when it comes to activities, options abound. Per the pro, travelers can “choose between a menu of included excursions such as kayaking, paddleboarding, hiking, zodiac cruises, whale watching, and more.” All in all, UnCruise really does offer something for everyone.

Itinerary : For a truly unique Alaska itinerary, consider the Aleutian Islands Adventure with Kodiak, Katmai, and Kenai Wilderness . Cruisers embark in Whittier before making their way to Kenai Fjords National Park, Kodiak Island and Foul Bay, Katmai National Park, Ugashik National Wildlife Refuge, Aniakchak National Monument and Preserve, the Shumagin and Unga Islands, False Pass, and Unalaska (where they’ll dock overnight in Dutch Harbor before disembarking the next day).

Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic

Courtesy of Nation Geographic

For a true expedition-style experience, Lindblad Expeditions is your best bet. The cruise line offers itineraries in partnership with National Geographic, which have come highly recommended by almost every travel advisor we spoke to. Just take it from Curry, who tells T+L, “If you want to learn about Alaska from a team of exceptional experts, there's no better choice than a Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic itinerary. “Every night before dinner,” she says, “We would hear about what we had seen on our excursions that day from the perspective of the experts — naturalists, geologists, marine mammal researchers, and even a diver who would share magical and colorful images from underwater of the area we had explored via Zodiac during the day.” According to the pro, the vessels are “some of the nicest and most modern small ships in the area,” some of which have private balconies along with “little extras” like water bottle filling stations, a mudroom to store gear, and multiple disembarkation platforms to get travelers on and off the ship quickly. Meanwhile, Goldring notes the line’s National Geographic Global Explorers family program, “which focus[es] on interactive and hands-on education with a true naturalist during outings.” As a result, cruisers can expect “a far more enriching experience [than those] offered by most other lines.”

Itinerary : The weeklong Exploring Alaska’s Coastal Wilderness itinerary is “perfect for couples and multi-generational families interested in an engaging and authentic experience exploring the fjords, islands, and small coastal communities,” says Palmer. The itinerary sails between Juneau and Sitka throughout May and September. Along the way, cruisers will visit Tracy Arm-Fords Terror Wilderness, the tiny fishing town of Petersburg, Glacier Bay National Park, and more.

Amazing Adventures Await on Alaska Shore Excursions

To fracture a phrase from a popular Dr. Seuss title, “oh, the places you’ll see,” when you schedule Alaska shore excursions on your inside passage cruise to Alaska and its exciting Alaskan ports of call. Alaska is often called America’s last frontier, and considering that it is home to the Tongass National Forest, which covers close to half of the state and includes the largest temperate rainforest in the world, that moniker is surely well deserved.

Alaska cruise excursions offer multiple A-list options for exploring the incredible beauty, be it flora or fauna, of the vast Tongass National Forest on hikes, on zip-lining adventures through the rainforest, on kayaking trips with glacier views, and on bear and wildlife expeditions.

Booking Alaska shore excursions lets you experience the state’s most spectacular highs and lows, literally, as you’re able to helicopter-land atop the magisterial heights of magnificent glaciers or just as easily cast a rod off a luxury fishing boat into watery depths and perhaps snag the trophy catch of a lifetime – salmon, halibut, Arctic Char, and others, depending on season and your location.

Glacier-gazing is a popular pastime when cruising Alaska, but there’s nothing quite as amazing as Alaska shore excursions that give you thrilling up-close views of the icy behemoths – the Mendenhall, the Hubbard , Taku, and others. Hike on top of a glacier following a helicopter flight over the Juneau icefields; bike along paths that follow the contours of glacier walls; enjoy spectacular views from visitors’ centers; see the craggy face of a glacier as you paddle down river and around ice floes, spotting native wildlife including bears, eagles, and harbor seals.

If whale-watching is your sport of choice, choose guided excursions on luxury catamarans, Zodiac inflatables, and special safari vessels that ply calm waters to well-known feeding grounds where whale-spotting is virtually, and in some cases, actually guaranteed, and naturalist guides offer insights into the world of these endlessly fascinating marine creatures. Alaska is known for being one of the best places to see orcas and humpback whales after all.

Tlingit, totems, and tides are on tap when you book shore excursions to get to know Native Alaskan culture. Watch, listen, see, and taste as the story of the ancient Tlingit tribe unfolds in destinations around Southeast Alaska through tours of villages and clan houses, totem carving demos, storytelling, and sampling of native foods.

Food lovers will find much to love in Alaska’s culinary scene , including feasting on the freshest line-caught salmon, grilled to perfection and served in park-like outdoor settings or rustic lodges in view of a massive glacier.

Celebrity Edge

Debuted in December 2018, the 2,918-passenger Celebrity Edge stands out for its modernity. The Edge is dressed to the nines in contemporary designs and features a diverse array of technologies, amenities, activities and dining venues on board. Passengers can delight in the ship's rooftop garden, take a dip in one of many ocean-facing pools, work up a sweat on the jogging track or relax at the on-site spa.

You'll find plenty of evening entertainment options, too, including themed bars and lounges, a club and a theater showcasing a variety of productions. The Edge was the first Celebrity ship fitted with the Magic Carpet – the line's cantilevered venue at sea that travels 13 stories. The open-air venue can be repositioned alongside several decks, allowing it to transform from a live music venue to a bar to an exclusive specialty restaurant, depending on its location.

For dining, passengers have 29 options to choose from. These include four main restaurants and specialty options serving a range of cuisines, from sashimi to French bistro classics. After a bite to eat, take a break and relax in your modern stateroom or suite. Every room offers technology that allows guests to control temperature, service and lighting with a touch screen. What's more, with a roughly 2-to-1 passenger-to-crew ratio, service across the ship will be spot on.

Celebrity Edge makes sailings across Europe, Asia, Australia and more.

Seven Seas Explorer

Regent Seven Seas Explorer debuted in 2016. It's one of the largest vessels in the fleet, welcoming up to 746 passengers. The ship makes service a top priority, with 548 crew members on board. According to past cruisers, the staff was friendly and attentive.

Travelers were even more impressed by the all-suite accommodations, which are some of the largest offered among ocean liners. All 373 suites include spacious balconies, marble bathrooms, walk-in closets, interactive flat-screen TVs and unlimited Wi-Fi.

Another high point: the cuisine. Explorer offers eight dining areas that range from the casual Pool Grill to Asian creations at Pacific Rim. As part of the 'Regent Experience,' all specialty dining is included in the cruise fare.

Outside the cabins, guests can spend their days participating in cooking demonstrations, lounging by the pool or relaxing in the library. At night, entertainment options include casino games, cocktail lounges and shows in the Constellation Theater. Complaints about this ship are few and far between, though some reviewers felt the entertainment could be more impressive.

The best perk, according to recent passengers? All shore excursions are included. Seven Seas Explorer sails to destinations in Alaska, Asia, Australia and more.

U.S. News Insider Tip: Pacific Rim is a favorite dining venue among cruisers, with its Asian-inspired cocktails and cuisine offering a selection of dishes from Thailand, Korea, China, Vietnam and Japan. When it's time to relax, cruisers can head to the spa for a treatment or – for a unique experience – cool their body temperatures down in the snow grotto (where snowflakes fall) before jumping into the sauna or hot tub to warm up. Recent travelers said this spa experience is not to be missed.

The ship is also home to a fitness center, a living room that hosts live entertainment, a library, shops, a salon and two movie theaters. The main pool area is expansive, featuring ample lounge seating, a retractable roof and a poolside bar. At night, the ship screens poolside movies under the stars.

Viking Orion's guests can enjoy meals at several onboard restaurants, including the main restaurant where menus rotate daily. Or, guests can book a private dining room for intimate gatherings. Recent cruisers raved about the service and food quality across the ship. Come nighttime, the ship's theater offers live performances ranging from themed shows to history and art lectures.

Viking Orion sails to Australia and New Zealand, Asia and Alaska.

U.S. News Insider Tip: One of the most relaxing spaces on Viking Orion (and all of Viking’s ocean ships) is the glass-enclosed Wintergarden, which is located next to the pool area. Afternoon tea is served every day, and it’s not to be missed at least one time during your cruise. – Gwen Pratesi, Contributor

13 Best Alaska Cruise Excursions for Families

W hen you talk to most families, Alaska is usually one of the top destinations on their travel bucket list. In fact, according to the US Family Travel Survey conducted on behalf of the Family Travel Association, 37 percent of respondents said they would like to visit Alaska in the future.

With Alaska covering twice the size of Texas, getting there and traveling around is a challenge. This is why approximately half of all visitors coming to Alaska arrive by cruise ship. We made that same choice with our trip to Alaska.

With only a week and a limited budget, an Alaskan cruise from Seattle was what worked best with our schedule and budget. We knew that with so many things to do in Alaska , an Alaskan cruise was just going to scratch the surface and give us a taste of Alaska — which made picking the best Alaska cruise excursions for families even more important.

If your only view of Alaska is going to be during your few days in port, you really want to choose wisely when it comes to the best Alaska cruise excursions for families.

Based on our experience and the advice of a few of my trusted fellow family travel bloggers, I’ve put together a list of the best family-friendly Alaska cruise excursions and grouped them below by Alaska cruise ports to help you narrow down the wealth of choices.

Of course, now that I’ve seen that slice of Alaska, I want to return and spend more time inland, so I’m digging into this Alaska travel guide to plan a future trip.

How to Choose an Alaska Cruise Excursion

If you are a frequent cruiser, you probably know the deal about choosing excursions in advance and booking through your cruise ship. If you are adventurous, you may even have branched out and booked some excursions direct with outfitters in port. There are a few things to consider when booking through the cruise line or direct.

Unlike booking excursions in the Caribbean, there are a few more factors at play to keep in mind:

  • Excursions booked through the cruise line are typically more expensive, as much as $20-30 per person
  • Cruise lines will typically guarantee that they will wait for you if you are on an excursion booked through them (no such guarantee for things booked on your own)
  • When you book through the cruise line, there is generally a transfer pick-up directly from the pier, whereas if you book direct, you may need to walk or take a taxi to a more central meeting spot
  • Official tour operators booked through the cruise ship are charged a waiting fee by the cruise line if they get back late, so they are highly motivated to get you back on time anyway
  • If you book the same excursion that is offered through the cruise directly through the tour operator, chances are you will be on the same trip as people that booked through the cruise so you are likely to get back on time or the boat will be waiting for them too. HOWEVER, if they drop you off in town and drop everyone else off at the boat, you are going to need to scramble to get back to the boat on time
  • Weather and transportation are big variables in Alaska. Excursions are often canceled because of the weather. Also, you may get on your excursion and have to wait to get back because of the weather. Something to keep in mind when booking direct vs through the cruise. It is much less stressful to know the boat has to wait for you. For example, on our flight plane/bear-watching excursion, we had to wait to return because of the weather. I would have been freaking out if I didn’t know that ship had to wait for us.

When you are looking through all the options of the best excursions, I would recommend first sitting down with your family and deciding what the main experiences are that you want to have in Alaska. Do you want to?

  • See bears in their natural habitat?
  • See whales?
  • See glaciers?
  • Meet sled dogs?
  • Take in the lush forests, spectacular views, and snow-capped mountains?

If you can narrow down the top experiences you want to have, then you can figure out how to prioritize and fit them in. For example, in my family we each picked our top thing that we wanted to do: seaplane ride, get to see bears in the wild, and go kayaking. It made it easy then look at each port and see where we could do each of those activities.

You also need to look closely at your time in port. If you are on an Alaskan cruise from Seattle to Southeast Alaska, like we were on the Norwegian Bliss , then you are going to have less time in port than some other cruises. If you are on Disney Wonder , you will want to see what special character options are available.

Be sure to leave yourself a little leeway on the timing. Even if you have seen enough Diamonds International stores to last a lifetime, you don’t want to miss a chance to get lunch of Alaskan King Crab legs in at least one port. And waiting times at restaurants can be very long, especially when you have three or more cruise ships in town.

Also, keep in mind my suggestions on what to wear on an Alaskan cruise so you are prepared for the weather and follow my Alaskan cruise packing list and this general cruise packing list .

Best Alaska Shore Excursions in Ketchikan

Note: This post contains affiliate links. If you click a link and make a purchase, I may receive a small commission.

For many cruises to southeast Alaska, Ketchikan is the first port of call and there are plenty of shore excursions to see things such as the Misty Fjords National Monument, totem poles at Totem Bight State Historical Park. Potlatch Totem Park or Totem Heritage Center, or see the Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show.

Neets Bay Bear Adventure by Float Plane

Since my husband has wanted to go on a float plane since watching Fantasy Island as a kid, we knew a float plane excursion had to be on our list. The Neets Bay bear-watching adventure from Taquan Air was the perfect combination of a wildlife tour and a float plane ride. This once-in-a-lifetime experience took a surprisingly smooth 20-minute flight out to Neets Bay, flying over some beautiful scenery, before arriving at a salmon hatchery.

There we met our guide for a walk out to the river where the salmon swim upstream and into the waiting arms of the bears (and fishermen.) Before we barely left the dock, we ran across a bear snacking on the salmon that had beached themselves on the rocks. During the short walk through the woods to the viewing platform, we learned about black bears and the local ecology.

We spent about 30-45 minutes watching the river as various bears emerged from the forest to climb down to the river to do some salmon fishing for lunch. It was an amazing excursion and even left us time to get a lunch of crab legs back in town before heading back to the ship.

Ketchikan Outdoors

With over one-thousand 5-star reviews on TripAdvisor, Ketchikan Outdoors is one excursion not to be missed. Hop on one of their 4-person zodiac boats and head out to explore the raw beauty of the SE Alaska Inside Passage. (Note: you need to be 10+ years of age.) On our excursion, we came across numerous habor seals, came across whales spouting, watched soaring eagles, drove past huge eagle nests and even witnessed an eagle snatch a fish out of the ocean right before our eyes.

Besides the abundant wildlife sightings, our tour guide was incredibly knowledgeable and he shared information about the history of Ketchikan, the native culture, and gave us a tour of the town. This is one adventure that should be on the top of anyone’s list who is cruising to Alaska .

Nature Hike in Ketchikan

Recently my husband and I sailed on an Alaskan cruise and our first port day landed us exploring Ketchikan. There was a nature hike offered in the Tongass National Forest and we jumped on it. It was a couple of hours in length with a knowledgeable guide (she knew her plants and bears) who trekked along at a pace easy enough for almost anyone to keep up.

There were several stopping points including a couple of breathtaking observation platforms where we saw salmon headed upstream and gorgeous waterfalls. Questions were encouraged and answered thoroughly including: “Are there snakes in Alaska?” And, the answer is no, by the way. We were offered snacks and bottled water and came away with so much wisdom and knowledge about the Tongass Rainforest, its vast wonder, and the habitats held within.

Most people concentrate on the glaciers when in Alaska, and rightfully so, they are fabulous. But, don’t overlook a lazy day hike in the rainforest. You’ll be pleasantly surprised.

Best Alaska Shore Excursions in Juneau

Juneau is another popular stop on an Alaska cruise, offering Alaska excursions to Mendenhall Glacier, helicopter tours to the Juneau icefield, and time to explore downtown Juneau.

Sea Kayaking

Top of my daughter’s wish list for our Alaska trip was sea kayaking. Since Juneau was our shortest time in port, we decided to sea kayak there, with the hope of getting close enough by water to see the glacier faces (and perhaps see some wildlife.) Families that haven’t done glacier visits in other destinations (we did glacier hiking in Iceland ) may prefer as Alaska shore excursion to see Mendenhall Glacier.

It ended up raining hard when we arrived so we were really thankful for their raincoats, kayak skirt (to cover the opening), and boots, as ours weren’t as waterproof as we thought!

The excursion started with a 20-minute drive through town and out to Douglas Island. We then boarded tandem kayaks (Hannah went with a guide) and luckily the rain let up for us to enjoy the fog and mist it left behind. We saw marine life including seals and eagles, but unfortunately couldn’t make it close enough to see the Mendenhall Glacier through the fog as they sometimes can.

After kayaking, we warmed up with hot apple cider, cheese, crackers, veggies, and reindeer sausage. The only downside (besides the weather) was that they were all tandem kayaks so you may get paired with someone that you have trouble synching up with.

Whale Watching

If your Alaskan cruise route includes a stop in Juneau, don’t miss taking a whale watching tour with Alaska Tales Whale Watching . You’ll be sharing the water with incredible and majestic humpback whales, at a respectful and safe distance of course. The company is so sure that you’ll see wildlife that they’ll guarantee your money back if you don’t see a whale.

Our extended family (including young kids) loved our 3.5 hour tour, where we saw plenty of whale activity and had our questions answered by the on-board naturalist. Did you know that Humpback whales feed in the cold waters of Alaska during the summer months and Alaska cruise season, then migrate thousands of miles to warm tropical waters in Hawaii and Mexico to mate and breed?

(Tip: You can choose to combine this tour with a trip to the Mendenhall Glacier.)

Visiting a Dog Musher’s Camp

For the cutest Alaskan cruise shore excursion around, a visit to a musher’s camp with sled dogs is a must, especially for families. The best part, not surprisingly, was cuddling the adorable newborn puppies!

We loved being pulled through the woods by a pack of twelve well-trained dogs, as we sat in a golf cart-type vehicle, the kids yelling “mush” all the while. We also learned the fascinating history, culture, and techniques of sled dog racing, including all about the iconic Iditarod, as well as how the dogs are cared for and trained.

Our boys had a great time dressing up in a musher’s jacket and huge mittens and standing behind a sled, imagining what it must be like in winter for these intrepid racers. We had booked the sled dog and musher’s camp outing as part of a fantastic 14-day Inside Passage cruise on Holland America Line’s MS Amsterdam, where my siblings and our families celebrated my father’s 80th birthday.

This excursion out of Juneau also included a visit to the cute and historic town of Skagway, where we treated our post-puppy smiles to some hot cocoa. While we had many memorable experiences throughout our magical two weeks, meeting the hard-working dogs and adorable puppies melted our hearts and stayed in our memories more than any other.

Best Cruise Excursions in the Inside Passage

Many cruise lines travel through the Inside Passage, but if you really want to get the best views, instead of a shore excursion, consider small ship cruising.

Small Ship Cruising has many advantages,  but the best advantage is getting places and staying where not many people ever get to visit. Most recently we traveled on the Mist Cove of The Boat Company during the Orvis Fly Fishing Week.

The ship has 12 cabins and a crew of 14, all experts in the area and simply amazing. Each night Captain found a small inlet to tuck into and the course may change day-by-day based on the 24 passengers’ desires, another one of the great advantages of small ship cruising. If the passengers want another hike to a waterfall and stream fishing, the course is changed.

In addition to fly fishing, we visited two wonders of the inner passage. The first was Brothers Island in the mouth of Pybus Bay. The hike through this unique rain forest is mesmerizing and one I waited for our entire trip. The unique mossy terrain takes you from moss beds through the lush rain forest  to the rocky beach to explore in high and low tide. Your skiff drops you off and then again picks you up.

After a warm lunch back on shore, it is back in the skiff to watch the Stellar sea lions from afar (to not to disturb them for the second.) We sat for an hour watching them interact, sunbathe, fish and communicate with all their wonderful sounds. On the short ride back to the Mist Cove we saw whales, birds, eagles, and so much more as we passed Brothers Islands.

Cruising by Dawes Glacier/Endicott Fjord

The Carnival Legend offers several shore excursions and my favorite happens to be one that happens on the water. We were able to experience the Dawes Glacier/Endicott Fjord due to the normal excursion route still being iced over in early June.

The glacier itself is beautiful, as is the boat ride to and from the glacier. An excursion that includes a glacier is one you will never forget, as the beauty of Alaska is all around. Where else can you get a gorgeous view of your cruise ship floating in the natural beauty of America’s 49th state?

Best Alaska Shore Excursions in Skagway

For some Alaskan cruises, Skagway is the northernmost point of call and often a longer day to explore than the other ports. Some of the popular things to do from Skagway include exploring the Chilkoot trail, White Pass summit and the Yukon suspension bridge, or the Klondike Gold Rush National Historic Park.

Denver Valley Wilderness Hike & White Pass Railway

Many of the cruise excursions from Skagway include some portion of the Whitepass-Yukon railway. Since we had the longest time in port in Skagway, we really wanted to use that time to get into the interior of Alaska and see some of its raw beauty. So we picked a combination excursion from Packer Expeditions .

We started with a 20-30 minute scenic coach short ride to Fraser, British Columbia (Passports required.) We then caught the White Pass Railway as it was headed south back to Skagway. After eating a provided lunch on the train and getting a chance to hang off the back of our car to take pictures of the amazing scenery, the train stopped in Denver Pass before getting to Skagway. (See a full review of the Skagway train tour to the White Pass Summit .)

Here we hopped off and started a four-hour, out-and-back hike through the Denver Valley. The scenery was gorgeous and we ended up resting near a beautiful waterfall and refueling with their provided snacks before heading back to the train tracks. The trip finished off with us catching the train back to Skagway. The train was late so I was very glad we booked through the ship and I knew the boat would be waiting for us.

Scenic River Float

My family did a scenic river float while visiting the town of Skagway, Alaska. Our kids were young (5 and 3) and we wanted a cruise excursion that would be enjoyable for all of us. Being from Florida, the Alaskan wilderness is quite foreign to us, yet nonetheless stunning.

Instead of booking the shore excursion through the cruise line, I did some online research and found several companies that will pick you up from the dock on a bus and take you to the float. The van ride itself was scenic and we soaked in the splendor of the mountains and winding roads.

Once we arrived at the Skagit River, our family of 4 and my mother-in-law were given life jackets and instructions about how to get on and off the raft. While on the raft, we saw plenty of bald eagles, beavers, birds, and even a moose wading on the shore. This is a nice family-friendly activity for those who do not want anything too adventurous or for a gentle scenic float through the Alaskan wilderness.

Best Alaska Shore Excursions in Sitka

Sitka is a popular cruise destination for wildlife viewing including bears, whales, and eagles.

Alaska Raptor Center

Sitka isn’t a common cruise port on most Alaska cruises, but one we’d easily return to for an extended land vacation. Located on Baranof Island and surrounded by majestic mountains, it was a very charming and beautiful town to explore with an interesting history, culture and scenic landscape.

Visiting the Alaska Raptor Center was one of my kids’ favorite shore excursion. The center provided care and rehabilitation for injured local birds and eventually released them back to the wild after they were well. Our tour took us to several observation areas to see the birds in various stages of rehab. The highlight was getting to be up close to the resident bald eagle, Sitka, while learning more about the facility. We enjoyed the various interactive exhibits and seeing some of the resident birds in their enclosures.

Sitka National Historical Park

Our favorite DIY excursion was following the waterfront walkway from the town center to Sitka National Historical Park. This site included the history and cultural heritage of the Russians and indigenous Tlingit and the park’s natural landscape. The visitor center offered art demonstrations, exhibits and ranger-led programs. Kids can participate in the Junior Ranger Program and earn badges.

We enjoyed walking the one-mile loop Totem Trail through the temperate rain forest. There was a fascinating collection of 18 totem poles carved by native Alaskans. There are ranger-led talks or a self-guided cell phone tour to learn more about these towering poles.

We loved the beach behind the visitor’s center. Families can explore tide pools and borrow Discovery Pack backpacks that included buckets, digging tools and magnifying glasses. It was the ideal place to relax, play and enjoy the breathtaking views of the mountains and the surrounding islands.

Fortress of the Bear

No visit to Sitka is complete without a visit to Fortress of the Bear , a sanctuary on a mission to save orphaned bear cubs in Alaska. This 501(C)3 not-for-profit organization has made it their personal mission to look after and care for orphaned cubs that are routinely shot by the Department of Fish & Game for lack of an alternative. While they do an incredible job rehabilitating these cubs and provide them with a life full of enrichment. their dream is to eventually change legislation to allow them to rehab & release these gorgeous creatures back into the wild.

Being a not-for-profit organization they rely solely on admission fees and donations for funding so the public has access to their amazing facilities and is able to view these majestic bears play and communicate with their caregivers in a very intimate setting. It was one of the most amazing experiences I had in Alaska and I highly recommend it.

Best Shore Excursions to Denali

Backcountry adventure.

When heading to Alaska, it’s imperative not to miss Denali National Park. Cruise passengers likely only have a day or two in the park, thus picking the right shore excursion is key. Our best day spent in Denali National Park was on the Backcountry Adventure offered by Pursuit.

We boarded the bus early in the morning and headed down the Denali road, which is only accessible to private busses or the park hop on hop off bus. The driver was knowledgeable and was able to show us an amazing array of animals. Snacks, beverages and a hearty lunch are included on the tour so no extra planning of meals is required.

The tour is surprisingly family-friendly with even younger children being able to withstand that long drive.  During the lunch break, there is an opportunity for a nature walk or to go panning for gold. It was the only successful gold panning of our entire trip and my kids were able to bring home their gold on laminated cards as a souvenir. We spotted 4 of the Denali Big 5 missing out only on the elusive wolf. Truly a perfect day in Denali National Park.

Northern Lights in Alaska

This Alaska cruise line “guarantees” a Northern Lights viewing

The immersive experience is on all its Alaska cruises in 2024

Erika Mailman

Celebrating 55 years of cruising to Alaska, Princess Cruises is rolling out an immersive experience that “guarantees” your Northern Lights viewing—even if it’s just inside the shipboard planetarium. Hopefully, you’ll also see the Aurora Borealis in the real sky, too!

The Voyage to the Stars experience debuts with 2024’s cruise tour season and is part of the North to Alaska with Princess program, which showcases local storytellers, cultural experiences, and Alaskan culture. For the first time ever, guests will enter a planetarium in the ship’s theater for an engaging show with live imagery to get everyone ramped up about the beautiful phenomenon nature offers. Alaska is one of the places where you’re most likely to see the Northern Lights —but the planetarium show is a great precaution in case it’s not the right season or weather to see them. And hey, if your kid is young enough, they may actually think they saw the real thing.

Astrotourists love sky-based phenomena like meteor showers and last month’s total solar eclipse , and the Aurora Borealis is one of the most spectacular things you can ever crane your head back to see. #BucketList, ammirite?

Besides Northern Lights viewing, Princess's Alaska cruises offer five glacier viewing experiences on seven ships and 91 different cruises to Glacier Bay National Park .
