► Second-gen Renault Captur review  ► Petrol and diesels available ► Plug-in comes later

At first glance, the new Renault Captur looks an awful lot like its predecessor. But just like with the new Clio, there are massive improvements hidden under marginal styling tweaks – and there’s now also a hybrid model.

The previous generation car was very long in the tooth, but this refreshed one breaths crisp new air into the Captur range, catapulting it from a mid-table runner to a Champions League playoff position contender.

Despite what those mild looks suggest, the Captur is all new. It sits atop the latest CMF-B Renault platform (shared with the Clio) while the interior is posher and plusher – plus there’s a new set of engines. There’s even a plug-in hybrid variant.

There’s a lot of competition…

Certainly more than its predecessor. When the first Captur came along in 2013, it was pretty much only competing with the Nissan Juke . Now, there’s the Volkswagen T-Cross , Mazda CX-3 , Peugeot 2008 , Hyundai Kona , Skoda Kamiq – to name just a few.

2020 Renault Captur front three quarter static

Renault hopes to stand out in a few ways. Styling is an obvious one – it might not be too different to the old car, but as compact SUVs go, it’s a real looker. It’s much more cohesive than some of its rivals, with bold lighting signatures (LED as standard, so even base models look smart) and stylish alloy wheels.

Most models have two-tone roofs and tastefully-applied chrome detailing, and the car’s whole stance is much more muscular and planted than it was before. Certainly less divisive than the likes of the Hyundai Kona or Nissan Juke – and dare we say, there’s more than a whiff of premium (whatever that is) about the Captur.

It’s also far nicer inside

This is where some of the most significant changes have been made, thanks to the donation of the latest Clio’s dashboard.

Gone from the old car are the horrid plastics and driving position where you sit on top of everything. You now get a proper driving position in very comfy seats (that look remarkably like ones you’ll find in a Volvo), swathes of soft materials across the dash and where you actually lean and poke around, and a suite of digital displays that make it feel suitably modern.

2020 Renault Captur interior

The digital dials are crisp and customisable with different themes based on the driving mode you’re in, while the largest 9.3-inch touchscreen media system comes packed with features – it’s a huge improvement over the old system and is very easy to use, if a little laggy at times when swiping between screens.

Lower-spec cars, however, get a lower-spec dash. The 7.0-inch infotainment screen is still fine, surprisingly – it’s the equal of most rivals and still gets Apple CarPlay and Android Auto to allow you to bypass its interface.  They also get traditional dials, which are still fine by us.

There’s more room, too

It would be a bit of a backwards step if there wasn’t more space on offer, and the Captur’s a good fit for small families. That jacked-up ride height is good for easy access, the rear bench slides back and forth depending on whether you want more legroom or a bigger boot, and there’s a double-height boot floor.

2020 Renault Captur rear seats

Up to 536 litres of space is on offer if you slide the seats forwards. That’s impressive when you consider the Skoda Kamiq’s boot is 400 litres in size, but that does mean there’s no legroom in the back. However, even with the seats all the way back, it’s a bigger space with 422 litres.

What’s under the bonnet?

A selection of petrol and diesel engines, as well as a plug-in hybrid. Things kick off with a 1.0-litre TCe 100, which has just 99bhp and 118lb ft. While 13.3 seconds to 62mph is definitely slow, if you give this engine a good boot it’s surprisingly tractable. Majority town users will be more than happy with the power on offer, and it’s not above the occasional motorway jaunt either.

It’s spoiled by a notchy five-speed manual, though, so we’d go for the 1.3 TCe 130 instead. 128bhp and a much chunkier 177lb ft come from four cylinders, rather than three – so it’s both smoother and more powerful, albeit slightly more droning at speed. A six-speed manual is standard, but you can opt for a seven-speed dual-clutch auto, badged EDC.

2020 Renault Captur rear dynamic

There’s also a TCe 155 which feels a bit unnecessary in a car like this, plus the EDC-only setup means you have to put up with what can be quite a frustrating combination and not a huge amount more performance.

These petrol options mirror the Peugeot 2008 exactly in terms of power – no accident, we suspect. The Pug’s units are more pleasant to drive, though, being based on the same brilliant 1.2-litre PureTech three-cylinder. It also gets a six-speed manual right from the base variant, and the automatic is a far superior eight-speed torque converter.

On the diesel side you get a 1.5-litre in a choice of 94bhp or 113bhp forms, the latter of which comes with a choice of manual or auto. Of course, economy will be key here.

Renault Captur E-Tech plug-in hybrid

The Captur’s range has expanded to include a plug-in hybrid option using a new 1.6-litre petrol in combination with an electric motor. Key figures here are a total output of 160hp, and a 28-mile battery-only range. It’s essentially a larger-batteried version of the non-plug-in Clio E-Tech .

How F1 hybrid tech boosts the new Renault Clio’s mpg

How does it drive?

Very well, actually. It’s a very mature feeling crossover, with a new electric steering setup that feels more natural and fluid, very good body control and an impressive ride on 17-inch alloys. The driving position helps this feel as well, with a high-set gearlever and adjustable driving position to help you actually feel like you’re sitting in the car, and not on it.

2020 Renault Captur front cornering

Refinement is good, too, with the engines only getting vocal when you really rev them out, but who does that in a little crossover?

More importantly, a selection of driver assistance tech has been thrown at the Captur, most important of which is the Highway & Traffic Jam Companion. This basically uses adaptive cruise with stop and go function as well as various lane-keeping aids to keep you in place. It works well, and once you’ve learned where the buttons all are to control it, is easy to use.

Sure, compact crossovers rarely set the world alight and this is no exception. However, if you’re in the market, the Captur is right up there as one of the very best choices.

To get the full feel of the new model’s changes, you’ll need one of the highest-end trim levels. That’s no hardship though, because this car is remarkable value – it’s cheap to buy outright and an absolute bargain on standard 0% finance. In terms of car for your cash, the Captur nobbles just about all of the competition.

2020 Renault Captur front three quarter static

Less than £22k will get you into a high-spec S Edition with our preferred TCe 130 engine – far cheaper than an equivalent Mazda CX-3 or Peugeot 2008 with the same equipment. And if you can manage with the TCe 100, you’ll save even more dough.

The new tech on board all works very well, and the interior’s a massive step up over the previous model – it’s up there with the 2008 as one of the best crossover cabins you can buy.

If you want a small SUV, the Captur should be right near the top of your list.

New Renault Captur receives dramatic facelift and Google-powered tech

Renault’s small suv has taken notes from the all-electric scenic e-tech when it comes to design and technology.

adaptive cruise control renault captur

The facelifted Renault Captur is here with a dramatic new look and Google-powered technology onboard. The refreshed version of Renault ’s small SUV follows hot on the heels of the heavily updated Ford Puma and lightly revamped Nissan Juke .

The big styling change is the Captur’s new, much less rounded front end which features a complex grille design, which we mocked up in a set of exclusive images earlier in the year. The styling takes its cues from the all-electric Renault Scenic E-Tech ; the brand’s redesigned logo features on the Captur, along with new vertical lighting strakes on either side of the front bumper, which has been tweaked too.

Renault 5 Geneva - front

The rear has received a more subtle rethink, including a simpler rear bumper and diffuser, and the tail-light housings are now transparent. Two-tone paint schemes will be offered on the facelifted Captur, and come standard with range-topping Esprit Alpine trim, which is also a new addition to the small SUV range.

Moving inside, all but the base Captur is now equipped with a 10.4-inch central touchscreen running the same OpenR Link infotainment system, also from the Renault Scenic . Google Maps and Google Assistant come built in, with over 50 apps available through the Google Play store. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are also standard fit with the new setup.

Renault Captur facelift - rear

Other tech upgrades include a 10.25-inch digital driver’s display, a wireless charging pad and two USB-C charging ports for those up front, plus another two USB-C ports in the rear on select models.

No leather is used in the revised Captur. In its place are recycled fabrics selected in part for their low carbon footprint, and Esprit Alpine models specifically feature upholstery made from over 26 per cent recycled and recyclable fabrics. Other touches in range-topping cars include aluminium sports pedals, blue contrast stitching and some French tricolour flags dotted about the cabin.

Cabin space is unchanged, and the Captur has retained its sliding rear bench so drivers can prioritise either rear passenger legroom or luggage capacity. With the rear seats all the way forward, the Captur boasts 536 litres of boot space, or 422 litres when slid fully back.

The facelifted Captur is available with up to 18 driver aids, from adaptive cruise control to a driver drowsiness warning, and also features a new ‘My Safety’ button that allows the driver to activate personalised settings for the ADAS suite, giving the option of quickly switching certain safety systems off.

Renault Captur facelift - dash

Renault has also tweaked the suspension geometry and power steering of the Captur in an effort to improve body control. Engine options are the same; the entry-level Captur TCe 90 uses a turbocharged 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine producing 90bhp and 160Nm of torque; enough for 0-62mph in 14 seconds. It’s paired with a six-speed manual gearbox.

The Captur E-Tech features a full-hybrid powertrain comprising a 1.6-litre four-cylinder petrol engine and two electric motors – one can drive the front wheels, the other is a starter-generator to fire up the engine. The setup produces 145bhp in total, allowing for 0-62mph in 10 seconds. It’ll return up to 60.4mpg, according to Renault.

The e-motors are powered by a small 1.2kWh battery, which allows the Captur E-Tech to cover short distances on electric power. A new E-Save function has been added to the hybrid Captur though, which maintains battery charge at least 40 per cent, for use later in your journey, or to maximise performance when needed.

The facelifted Renault Captur will go on sale in the second half of 2024, with buyers to be given a choice of Evolution, Techno or new Esprit Alpine trims.

Safety: Euro NCAP gives 5 stars for the All-new Renault CAPTUR

adaptive cruise control renault captur

Following in the footsteps of the the All-new Clio last May, the spotlight is now on the the All-new Captur as it receives the highest possible rating from international organization Euro NCAP. Success comes in the wake of changes the European organisation made in 2018 when it reinforced and ramped up test protocols. The perfect score reflects the high level of safety for the All-new Renault Captur passengers (children and adults) and pedestrians alike. The outstanding performance is proof of the effectiveness of the driver assistance systems – the most comprehensive in the category.

Passive security: Benefits of the new CMF-B platform

Thanks to the Alliance's new CMF-B modular platform, the All-new Renault Captur has optimized body and seating structures. Seatbelts have fasteners that provide optimal support, pyrotechnic pretensioners, stress limiters and a five-seat non-closure alert. The All-new Captur comes equipped with a series of 6 airbags. It also offers optimized vision with a 360-degree camera, standard 100% LED front projectors, automatic light ignition, and an electrochromic rear-view mirror.

Active Safety: The All-new Captur watches over its occupants

The All-new Renault Captur also owes its Euro NCAP 5-star rating to its many advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS). These include emergency braking assistance (with pedestrian, cyclist, and vehicle recognition), lane centring, speeding alarms with speed-sign recognition, and safe-distance alarms; not to mention adaptive cruise control and the Traffic and Highway Assistant – the first step towards autonomous vehicles. The full range of ADAS are grouped together in three families: Driving, Parking, and Safety – pillars of the Renault EASY DRIVE certificate. All settings are easily accessible through the user-friendly interface of the the All-new Captur's Renault EASY LINK multimedia system.

Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)

waarom is Adaptive Cruise Control belangrijk?

1. comfortabel rijden, 2. veiliger rijden, 3. gelijkmatig rijden.

adaptive cruise control renault captur

comfortabel rijden

adaptive cruise control renault captur

veiliger rijden

adaptive cruise control renault captur

gelijkmatig rijden

Renault Adaptive Cruise Control gebruiken

Megane E-Tech electric Adaptive Cruise Control zuinig

is Adaptive Cruise Control zuinig?

traffic sign recognition - uitmuntende veiligheid - Renault Austral E-Tech Full Hybrid

is Adaptive Cruise Control verplicht?

For the first time Rosatom Fuel Division supplied fresh nuclear fuel to the world’s only floating nuclear cogeneration plant in the Arctic

The fuel was supplied to the northernmost town of Russia along the Northern Sea Route.

adaptive cruise control renault captur

The first in the history of the power plant refueling, that is, the replacement of spent nuclear fuel with fresh one, is planned to begin before 2024. The manufacturer of nuclear fuel for all Russian nuclear icebreakers, as well as the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP, is Machinery Manufacturing Plant, Joint-Stock Company (MSZ JSC), a company of Rosatom Fuel Company TVEL that is based in Elektrostal, Moscow Region.

The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactors of the icebreaking type. Unlike convenient ground-based large reactors (that require partial replacement of fuel rods once every 12-18 months), in the case of these reactors, the refueling takes place once every few years and includes unloading of the entire reactor core and loading of fresh fuel into the reactor.

The cores of KLT-40 reactors of the Akademik Lomonosov floating power unit have a number of advantages compared to the reference ones: a cassette core was used for the first time in the history of the unit, which made it possible to increase the fuel energy resource to 3-3.5 years between refuelings, and also reduce the fuel component of the electricity cost by one and a half times. The FNPP operating experience formed the basis for the designs of reactors for nuclear icebreakers of the newest series 22220. Three such icebreakers have been launched by now.

For the first time the power units of the Akademik Lomonosov floating nuclear power plant were connected to the grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020. The supply of nuclear fuel from Elektrostal to Pevek and its loading into the second reactor is planned for 2024. The total power of the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP, supplied to the coastal grid of Pevek without thermal energy consumption on shore, is about 76 MW, being about 44 MW in the maximum thermal power supply mode. The FNPP generated 194 million kWh according to the results of 2023. The population of Pevek is just a little more than 4 thousand, while the FNPP has a potential for supplying electricity to a city with a population of up to 100 thousand people. After the FNPP commissioning two goals were achieved. These include first of all the replacement of the retiring capacities of the Bilibino NPP, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya TPP, which has already been operating for more than 70 years. Secondly, energy is supplied to the main mining companies in western Chukotka in the Chaun-Bilibino energy hub a large ore and metal cluster, including gold mining companies and projects related to the development of the Baimsk ore zone. In September 2023, a 110 kilovolt power transmission line with a length of 490 kilometers was put into operation, connecting the towns of Pevek and Bilibino. The line increased the reliability of energy supply from the FNPP to both Bilibino consumers and mining companies, the largest of which is the Baimsky GOK. The comprehensive development of the Russian Arctic is a national strategic priority. To increase the NSR traffic is of paramount importance for accomplishment of the tasks set in the field of cargo shipping. This logistics corridor is being developed due regular freight voyages, construction of new nuclear-powered icebreakers and modernization of the relevant infrastructure. Rosatom companies are actively involved in this work. Rosatom Fuel Company TVEL (Rosatom Fuel Division) includes companies fabricating nuclear fuel, converting and enriching uranium, manufacturing gas centrifuges, conducting researches and producing designs. As the only nuclear fuel supplier to Russian NPPs, TVEL supplies fuel for a total of 75 power reactors in 15 countries, for research reactors in nine countries, as well as for propulsion reactors of the Russian nuclear fleet. Every sixth power reactor in the world runs on TVEL fuel. Rosatom Fuel Division is the world’s largest producer of enriched uranium and the leader on the global stable isotope market. The Fuel Division is actively developing new businesses in chemistry, metallurgy, energy storage technologies, 3D printing, digital products, and decommissioning of nuclear facilities. TVEL also includes Rosatom integrators for additive technologies and electricity storage systems. Rosenergoatom, Joint-Stock Company is part of Rosatom Electric Power Division and one of the largest companies in the industry acting as an operator of nuclear power plants. It includes, as its branches, 11 operating NPPs, including the FNPP, the Scientific and Technical Center for Emergency Operations at NPPs, Design and Engineering as well as Technological companies. In total, 37 power units with a total installed capacity of over 29.5 GW are in operation at 11 nuclear power plants in Russia. Machinery Manufacturing Plant, Joint-Stock Company (MSZ JSC, Elektrostal) is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of fuel for nuclear power plants. The company produces fuel assemblies for VVER-440, VVER-1000, RBMK-1000, BN-600,800, VK-50, EGP-6; powders and fuel pellets intended for supply to foreign customers. It also produces nuclear fuel for research reactors. The plant belongs to the TVEL Fuel Company of Rosatom.

CRUISE CONTROL

adaptive cruise control renault captur

The cruise control function helps you to maintain your driving speed at a speed that you choose, called the cruising speed.

This cruising speed may be set at any speed above 19 mph (30 km/h).

1 Cruise control On/Off switch.

2 Switch to activate and decrease cruising speed (SET/-).

3 Switch to activate and increase cruising speed or to recall the memorised cruising speed (RES/+).

4 Switch the function to standby (with cruising speed saved) (0).

5 Speed limiter On/Off switch.

This function is an additional driving aid.

It can under no circumstances replace the driver’s responsibility to respect speed limits or to be vigilant.

The driver must always be in control of the vehicle.

Cruise control must not be used in heavy traffic, on winding or slippery roads (black ice, aquaplaning, gravel) and during bad weather (fog, rain, side winds etc.).

There is a risk of accidents.

adaptive cruise control renault captur

Switching on

Press switch  1 .

The  7 warning light appears in grey.

The “Cruise control ON” message appears on the instrument panel accompanied by dashes to indicate that the cruise control function is in operation and waiting to memorise a cruising speed.

Activating cruise control

While the vehicle is moving a steady speed above approximately 19 mph (30 km/h), press the  2 (SET/-) switch or the  3 (RES/+) switch: the function is activated and the current speed is taken into account.

The cruising speed replaces the dashes. Cruise control is confirmed when the memorised speed and warning light appear in green  7 .

If you try to activate the function below 19 mph (30 km/h), the message “Invalid Speed” will be displayed and the function will remain inactive.

Once a cruising speed is registered and the cruise control function is active, you may lift your foot off the accelerator pedal.

Please note that you must keep your feet close to the pedals in order to react in an emergency.

adaptive cruise control renault captur

Adjusting the cruising speed

The cruising speed may be changed by pressing the following repeatedly:

- the  2 switch (SET/-) to reduce the speed;

- the  3 switch (RES/+) to increase the speed.

Note: press and hold one of the switches to modify speed by successive increments.

Exceeding the cruising speed

The cruising speed may be exceeded at any time by depressing the accelerator pedal.

While it is being exceeded, the cruising speed flashes in red on the instrument panel. Then, release the accelerator pedal: after a few seconds, the vehicle will automatically return to its set cruising speed.

Cruising speed cannot be maintained

When driving down a steep gradient, the system may be unable to maintain the cruising speed: the memorised speed will flash in red on the instrument panel and an audible signal sounds at regular intervals to inform you of this situation.

If the cruise control is no longer available (after several attempts to activate it), contact an Approved Dealer.

Putting the function on standby

The function is set to standby if you:

- 4 switch (0);

- the brake pedal;

- the clutch pedal or shifting to neutral if the vehicle has an automatic gearbox;

- depending on the vehicle, the clutch pedal for a prolonged period or upon prolonged neutral position.

The cruising speed is stored and displayed in grey on the instrument panel.

Returning to the cruising speed

If a speed is stored, it can be recalled, once you are sure that the road conditions are suitable (traffic, road surface, weather conditions, etc.). Press the switch  3 (RES/+) if the vehicle speed is above 19 mph (30 km/h).

When the speed is stored, cruise control activation is confirmed by the display in green of the cruising speed and, depending on the vehicle, the  7 warning light is displayed.

NB: if the speed previously stored is much higher than the current speed, the vehicle will accelerate more rapidly to reach this threshold.

When the cruise control is set to standby, pressing switch  2 (SET/-) reactivates the cruise control function without taking into account the stored speed: it is the speed at which the vehicle is moving that is taken into account.

Switching off the function

The cruise control function is interrupted:

- when you press the  1 switch. In this case, the speed is no longer stored;

- when you press the  5 switch. In this case the speed limiter is selected and there is no stored speed.

The warning light  7 disappears from the instrument panel to confirm that the function is no longer active.

Putting the cruise control on standby or switching it off does not cause a rapid reduction in speed: you must brake by depressing the brake pedal.
