Transport and tranquility are usually mutually exclusive, but not if you book a houseboat and cruise along France 's canals and navigable rivers. You can stop at your whim to pick up fresh produce from a local market, dine at a village restaurant or glide by a local château by bicycle.

There are thousands of kilometers of rivers and canals that link together in a vast web touching much of the country and allowing access to the surrounding seas. Changes in altitude are taken care of by a system of écluses (locks) and boats range from self-hire houseboats to luxury hotel barges.

There are hundreds of equally wonderful canal and river routes, dotted with small houses where the lock keepers used to live (and some still do). Below is just a sample of what lies ahead. Additional world-class routes include the Canal de la Marne au Rhin, a link between Paris and Alsace and Germany via the Rhine, and the 360km-long Canal de Nantes à Brest in Brittany .

Boat on Canal du Midi, France

Canal du Midi

Stretching for 241km between Toulouse and Sète , the Canal du Midi is one of the great waterways of southern France. Completed in 1681 at the behest of Louis XIV and classified as a World Heritage site since 1996, the canal was designed to provide a trading route between major French ports. Combined with the Canal de Garonne, it forms part of the Canal des Deux Mers (Canal of the Two Seas), which enables boats to travel all the way from the Atlantic (near Bordeaux) to the Mediterranean.

It’s a work of art as much as engineering, lined with stately plane trees, puttering houseboats and gorgeous riverside towns. You can stroll or pedal along the towpaths as you stop along the canal’s route, or visit its cities – Toulouse, Agde, Minerve, Béziers , Narbonne, Carcassonne and Sète.

It’s also worth stopping at the Musée Canal du Midi in St-Ferréol, which explores the history of the waterway and the life of its chief engineer, Paul Riquet.

Canal de Garonne

With 53 locks, this serene canal falls from the junction with the Canal du Midi at Toulouse to Castets-en-Dorthe at the Garonne river. The Garonne then lets out to the Bay of Biscay just beyond wonderful Bordeaux , a jolly stop for its gorgeous architecture and wine aplenty . Or, take a day trip from the boat to Sauternes for its sweet and white wines, or Roquefort, for its world-famous cheese . Another fascinating stop along the way is Moissac, a large riverside town, partly on an “island” formed between the Tarn and the Garonne Canal. Its crowning glory is the Unesco-listed Abbaye St-Pierre , a monumental abbey church.

Canal de Bourgogne

Canal boating between Bourgogne vineyards really can’t be beat. Burgundy's 1200km of placid waterways include the Rivers Yonne, Saône and Seille and a network of canals, including the Canal de Bourgogne, the Canal du Centre, the Canal Latéral à la Loire and the Canal du Nivernais, which are detailed below.

The spectacular 242km Canal de Bourgogne connects the river Saône in the south at Saint-Jean-de-Losne, with the river Yonne at Laroche-Migennes – which in turn connects to the Seine if you want to continue on to Paris. Highlights Include , of course, touring the regions’ magnificent vineyards and sampling the wines, as well as visiting cities like Dijon and Beaune . West of Dijon, along and around the Canal de Bourgogne, the Pays d'Auxois is a rolling land of mustard fields, wooded hills and escarpments dotted with fortified hilltop towns, including Semur-en-Auxois. Tucked into this verdant landscape are a pair of exceptional historical sites, the Cistercian abbey of Fontenay and the MuséoParc Alésia historical museum.

Boating near Rochers du Saussois on the Canal du Nivernais

Canal du Nivernais

Originally constructed for moving firewood from the Morvan’s forests to Paris, the peaceful Canal du Nivernais  crosses the Yonne river valley , sometimes merging with the river itself and connecting the Loire with the Seine. A top spot along the way, the ancient city of Auxerre dates back to Gallo-Roman times and now curves beautifully along the Yonne, with the magnificent Gothic Cathédrale Saint-Étienne d'Auxerre towering overhead.

You can also tour the vineyards – or simply stock the wines of the region – with Chablis being its reigning queen.

Loire Valley canals

A batch of bitty canals interlink between Burgundy and the châteaux-laden Loire Valley . They include the Canal du Centre, Canal latéral à la Loire, and the Canal de Briare.

Midway between Dijon and Lyon , Burgundy's southernmost département , Saône-et-Loire, is an inviting land of rolling green fields criss-crossed by hedgerows and dotted with indigenous Charolais beef cattle. The Canal du Centre and some fabulous bike paths meander through Saône-et-Loire's forests and pastureland.

During the region's medieval heyday it was home to the largest church in all of Christendom, the magnificent abbey of Cluny . These days it's a sleepier place, but pretty châteaux and little-known Romanesque chapels still sit around almost every bend, hinting at Saône-et-Loire's long history and making this a delightful area for day trips.

Other regional highlights include wines galore: from the wine-growing villages around Mâcon to Sancerre, which produce some of France's finest whites – taste tests abound.

Shorter hops and day trips on France's canals

If you’re not able to do a full canal cruise, you can also hop aboard a small day trip boat or punt the day away from French cities laced with canals, like Colmar . For example, boat cruises run along the Garonne in Toulouse from the Quai de la Daurade; in summer, some boats also travel onto the Canal du Midi. The two main companies are Les Bateaux Toulousains and Toulouses Croisières .

In the Dordogne Valley  you can go river boating from La Roque Gageac aboard a flat-bottomed gabarre with Gabarres Norbert .

Cycling the canals

Most boats have bikes on board or can arrange cycling day trips. With a vast network of cycling paths, the French canal towpaths are pure two-wheeling joy. Voies vertes (green ways) stretch for thousands of kilometres along old canal towpaths and are also open to walkers and horse riders, and many sections are paved to ensure a silky-smooth ride. Many connect to véloroutes – designated cycling paths .

You can cycle on or very near the chemin de halage (towpath) of the Canal de Bourgogne all the way from Dijon to Migennes (225km). The section from Montbard to Tonnerre (65km) passes by Château d'Ancy-le-Franc ; between Montbard and Pouilly-en-Auxois (58km), spurs go to the Abbaye de Fontenay and Semur-en-Auxois.

Similarly, peaceful towpaths along the Canal du Midi (check out Canal des 2 Mers à Vélo ) link the Atlantic with the Mediterranean via the canals.

Tips for canal travel in France

How to book a french canal trip.

Usually, companies, like Barge Lady Cruises , are brokers that then connect you to the outfit owning the boat or boats. Things to consider are:

  • the size of the boat;
  • whether there will be a skipper on board, and what other staff, like a cook or steward;
  • how many staterooms will there be (and thus people you may share with);
  • what do they offer in the way of day trips and how customizable are they?

...or book a luxury barge cruise instead

Levels can become quite luxe, with your own private chef and bespoke food, drink and day trips. Smaller luxury boats can have as few as two staterooms, with a maximum of four guests, which are perfect for friends or family who want a private boat. A top purveyor in the field is Belmond , with its smaller boat, Allouette on the Canal du Midi, or larger ones like Fleur de Lys in Burgundy.

How to rent a canal boat

If you’re up for piloting yourself, you can hire a boat. They generally accommodate from two to 12 passengers and are fully outfitted with bedding and cooking facilities. Anyone over 18 can pilot a riverboat, but first-time skippers are given a short instruction session so they qualify for a carte de plaisance (temporary cruising permit). The speed limit is 6km/h on canals and 8km/h on rivers. It’s important to read up on the route you will be taking to learn how to handle the locks and other tricks of the waterway. Except in July and August, you can often rent over a weekend.

You can also traverse the waterways by sailboat, but you must unstep (take down) the mast to do so.

Rental agencies abound. They include the following:

France Afloat – Anglophone canal-boat specialist in France, based in Vermenton, 25km southeast of Auxerre. This British-owned, family-run enterprise rents boats and provides advice for trips on France's inland waterways, including the Yonne River, the Canal de Bourgogne and the Canal du Nivernais.

Locaboat Holidays – based in Joigny, 27km northwest of Auxerre – has been renting boats throughout France since 1977. Burgundian destinations for their self-guided explorations include the Canal de Bourgogne, Canal du Centre, Canal du Nivernais and the Yonne and Seine Rivers.

Where to find a map of France's canals

Waterway books with detailed maps are a must. Excellent guides include Breil and Imray , or check out the website French Waterways for loads of info and maps on the country’s canals and waterways.

Rental companies offer boats from late March to mid-November (canals close for repairs in winter). Advance reservations are essential for holiday periods, over long weekends and in July and August, especially for larger boats. The best bet is to go during the shoulder seasons (May and June or September), when the weather is fine but wait times are shorter at the locks, and crowds fewer.

Hire a canal boat in France and traverse some of the best French water landscapes

The best french canal holidays in the country’s south west.

The beloved south-west of France is home to some of the most idyllic waterways in the entire country. The region has 300km of man-made canals and natural rivers that self-drivers can easily navigate with the right boat. These hundreds of kilometres make for some of the most beautiful boating holidays in France . The entire area is also awash with history, culture and gastronomical must-dine spots.

Leaving the commune of Agen, you can start your barging through France adventure by travelling past the many-arched Agen canal bridges and the 11th-century Moissac Abbey. Boating down the Baïse River, you will soak up the overwhelmingly green French landscapes that roll by the river and canal banks.

As you head west from Agen, you will arrive in the medieval town of Nerac, home to Henri IV’s 15th-century château. Choosing to visit the south-west when looking for a  canal boat for hire in France opens up a whole world of routes all over the Gascogne.

This region links both the Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts together with a series of waterways, and as a result, you can enjoy the best of both French cultures.

Barge cruises in France through the Lot Valley

Also located in the southwestern areas of France, the Lot Valley welcomes tourists every year, seeking that hidden beauty the area is famous for. Taking a French canal barge through the Lot Valley is one of the best ways to see this area of the country. Starting out in Cahors, some of the best canal boat holidays in France begin along this stretch of the Lot River. River Lot boat hire is both popular and easy, making it a great destination when looking for canal boat cruises in France .

From Cahors, you can navigate the wild banks of the Lot River and find your way past the picturesque landscapes of cliffs, caves and several locks that you must navigate yourself. The river takes you as far east as Larnagol, taking you past some of the most idyllic small French villages in the nation. Sights such as the village of St-Cirq-Lapopie and Quercy and some of the best-preserved villages in France can be seen along this route. The Lot Valley is also a gastronomical dream come true, with the famous “black wine” of Cahors, one of the more popular local delicacies. There are also several dining stops for French staples, such as foie gras and truffles.

Navigating the Loire and Nivernais Canal with the canal boats of France

Passing from the south of France to its capital Paris in the north, the Loire and Nivernais Canal make for one of the premier locations for France boating holidays . Built between the late 18th and mid 19th centuries, the canal connects two very different river basins, both the Seine and the Loire. This section offers some of the most picturesque waterways and makes for fantastic barge trips in France and great boating holidays .

Flanked by green meadows and Charolais cattle, the canal winds its way through central France and is dotted by must-see sights along the way. You will get the hang of locks by the end of the Loire and Nivernais canal, with a section containing up to 16 locks near Sardy-Les-Epiry, also known as the stairway of locks.

Apart from the seemingly endless sections of locks and Charolais cattle, the Loire and Nivernais canal have one of the longest routes of any northern French canal system and make for one of the most popular routes for canal boat holidays in France .

Discover the best historic landmarks with canal boat holidays in France

Pass by the fortified city of carcassonne when on your french canal boat rental.

Rent a canal boat in France and when winding your way down the Canal du Midi, keep an eye for the medieval fortified city of Carcassonne, overlooking the canal and River Aude. The city was constructed in the 5th century and remains one the best preserved of its kind. The outer city walls are some of the longest city walls in Europe and add something extra to one of the best-preserved medieval cities in the country.

You can view Carcassonne from the comfort of your Canal du Midi boat hire on the calm waters of the Canal du Midi. You can even see more at the side of the canal by getting out on foot. Simply walk the meandering routes up to the medieval city and see its many sites.

Apart from walking, you can also store bicycles while on your canal trips in France and cycle your way around the well-preserved city. Cycling also allows you to cover far more ground and see more of Carcassonne when boating down the Canal du Midi.

Hire a canal boat in France and see the first Roman settlement outside of Italy at Narbonne

Canal barge holidays in France give you the chance to see a wide variety of sites you otherwise would not have seen. The town of Narbonne, along the south of France’s Mediterranean coast, is one of the jewels along the Canal du Midi route. As the first settlement outside of Italy to be settled by the Roman’s, the city’s historical significance and place as the Gaul capital can not be understated.

The city’s well-restored medieval quarter is one of Narbonne’s major highlights, and the Cathédral St-Jus is also one of the tallest cathedrals in all of southern France. The shining feature of Narbonne has to be the Pont des Marchands. This Roman bridge over the Canal de la Robine is one of only three of this kind in all of France and is recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Narbonne is another such town that can be enjoyed from the comfort of your barge or up close if you choose to moor up and take a walk around the town. As the canal cuts through the heart of the city, it is more than simple enough to navigate your way through with a canal barge in France.

Secure your boat rental in France and navigate one of the lowest bridges on the Canal du Midi at Capestang

One of the biggest challenges when driving canal boat rentals in France is navigating the ever-changing routes of the waterways. The Canal du Midi has its fair share of obstacles and routes to navigate, making it an interesting route to travel down at the best of times. One of the canal’s most impressive features is the bridge at Capestang. The bridge is known as one of the lowest bridges on the Canal du Midi and is a delight to sail through.

Other sights in Capestang include the 12th-century collegial church of St-Étienne, home to the archbishops of Narbonne. This is another iconic religious and historic landmark, one of many that call the French canal routes home. There is so much to see; whether you sit back and relax on the boat or get out onto dry land, the exploration takes a new turn.

Mix self drive barging in France with a gastronomical adventure

Take your canal boat rental through france and discover the lesser-known cuisines of the alsace region.

Barge holidays in France can be full of adventure and surprises no matter where you go, but this is especially true of the Alsace region. Lapping the borders of France, Germany and Luxembourg, the Alsace region has long had a mixture of influences and cultures that added to the area’s charm and appeal. Alsace canal boat hire will take you down the Sarre Canal through towns such as Harskirchen and Saverne.

Apart from its stunning beauty and culture, the Alsace region of France, much like the rest of the country, has its fair share of foodie delights. Although often overlooked as a foodie region, the Alsace region of France has its own dishes, tastes and gastronomical delights just as appealing as the rest of France.

The Alsace’s national dish is a fermented cabbage dish known as choucroute garnie, a French version of the famous sauerkraut. Another Alsace favourite is a hearty meat casserole dish known as Bäckeoffe, ideal after a day on the water. Revellers can sample these dishes and many more along the Alsace canal route, stopping to sample a drop of traditional Alsace white wine on the way.

Opt for canal boat hire in Brittany and delight in the best Breton food

Canal boat hire in Brittany is one for the foodies! France’s northeastern region, Brittany, has its own network of canals, ideal for travelling around the green opened spaces of the Breton peninsula. The one channel that stands out is the Nantes–Brest canal, linking two major port cities in the entire Brittany region. The ease of obtaining a French river boat rental means you can travel through the entire region completely on the canals or rivers. With a similar climate and environment to the UK’s west country, the rolling cliffs and green fields are a step away from the country’s busier regions.

Again, Brittany has its own cuisine and culture, reflecting the region’s unique people, history and landscapes. As the Breton peninsula has the ideal climate for apples and orchards to flourish, this has given birth to a hearty cider making culture. This Breton cider has made a name for itself in France and across the globe, competing with traditional makers such as Herefordshire or Somerset in the UK.

Alongside their rich cider making history, Brittany has its fair share or traditional Breton dishes too. Those seeking a culinary adventure alongside their trip barging in France can sample the taste of Brittany through their delicious selection of seafood, especially muscles.

Drift through the canals and rivers of Burgundy and wine and dine until your heart’s content

France’s Burgundy region needs no culinary introduction. Home to fine wines and even finer food, this region has welcomed both Frenchman and foreigner alike for decades. Burgundy canal holidays often wind their way through the two main waterways of Canal de Bourgogne and the Canal du Nivernais, a total of 200 miles. This route will take holidaymakers from north to south or vice versa, giving them a grand overview of the entire Burgundy region.

Burgundy Franche Comté canal boat hire is a simple process and makes the region one of the most popular to barge travel in France . Alongside the fantastic canals and rolling landscapes, the Burgundy region is a haven for French cuisine, both food and wine. The now world-famous beef Bourguignon was coined in this region of France, and it is this perfect match between food and wine that makes the Burgundy foodscape what it is.

Apart from the famous beef bourguignon, other must-try dishes in the Burgundy area include the quintessential Burgundy dish known as Pôchouse. This freshwater fish stew will keep on theme with the day’s canal and river adventures and will have you tasting the true essence of local French cuisines.

A mix of French cuisine and history along the nation’s oldest canal

While on the gastronomical canal tour of France, there is one stretch of canals that should not be overlooked, and that is the Briare Canal. Constructed in the mid 17th century, the Briare was an impressive feat of civil engineering and is just remarkable today. Running from Briare to Bruges, this canal route runs through the very heart of France, south of Paris, and is often an overlooked area of the country when it comes to cuisines and culture.

Being overlooked has done nothing to the cuisine and culture that remains in the Loiret region in which the Briare Canal runs. Championed at the top of most of its cuisines are the fabulous patisseries and sweet treats this area is famed for. These include ‘le poirat’, a sweetened French pear pie that is the perfect complement to a long day’s boating along the Briare Canal.

Find the best boat for French canals which is the right vessel for you

Compact vessels for riverboat hire in france.

If you’re planning that perfect romantic trip for two or simply wish to travel through the French countryside with an effortless boat, simple in size and easy to maintain, then a small, compact boat is the right one for you. Whether in the luxury category or the economy range, you can find smaller boats in many different styles, all of which are legally accepted along French waterways and will be of little trouble to even the newest of boat operators.

The smaller boats maybe some of the best boats for navigating the French waterways, yet users must remember that smaller self-drive canal boats in France will lack the capacity of larger vessels, meaning you can take fewer supplies on board and fewer people can call the boat home for the trip. This lack of storage space may not be a concern for those who are using the boat merely as a way of travelling between each destination.

Medium-sized boats for your family and friends

Those who need far greater size and space for their explorations across France’s rivers and canals should opt for a larger medium-sized boat. These boats still have the finesse and diligence that is needed to navigate the French waterways, yet the ability to hold far more supplies makes it an attractive choice for those who like to barge hire in France’s canals .

Apart from the ability to hold far more supplies, the medium-sized boats can play host to up to six people. This is perfect for families who wish to make a holiday out of boating along France’s waterways or a large group of friends taking the boat out together. Although these larger boats can be much more challenging to handle, the same principles apply to the larger vessels as they do to the smaller ones.

How to choose the ideal destination for a canal cruise in France?

All of our cruises in France are appreciated by our clients and present landscapes that are their own and that will delight you. For a first experience, make sure that the logistics are simple and straightforward. A one-week stay in a boat can be complemented by a week’s “classic” holiday in the same region.

For more experienced passengers, choosing a canal cruise each time in a different region is an excellent way to explore France in a new and peaceful way. Depending on the season, the weather and the wishes of the staff, Locaboat will be able to direct you to one region or another.

.cls-1{fill:#00b8b9;} interrogation What is the best area for canal boats in France?

There are many different locations throughout France to enjoy fantastic boating, which makes deciding where the best area is rather difficult. The most famous canal route in all of France is the Canal du Midi, which is seen as one of the best areas in the nation to enjoy French boating.

There are a number of reasons why Canal du Midi is considered the best area. First of all, its location alone makes it an attractive route. Soaked in the sun of southern France, making this journey during the French summer elevates it to another level. The actual route from start to end also adds to its appeal, the canal runs from the Mediterranean coast to the Atlantic.

Testimonials

The evening went very well, the staff on board was great, the dj too and we have had a mild weather throughout the cruise ! The guests were delighted with their evening!

Frédéric S.

We and all our guests appreciated the kindness and the professionalism of the crew. The catering team has been available and assured diligent and pleasant service. The different bites and verrines have been greatly appreciated, and the passion fruit cake as well as the raspberry cake had a great success.

I highly recommend this boat trip, it was really nice to sail on this canal, discover the locks. The information given about the history of the city was excellent (and funny!). Thank you for this moment!

A cruise much more original and rich in history than the traditional cruise by river boats on the Seine. 2h30 of relaxation, locks, bridges crossing and other very unusual underground passages. Good atmosphere and comments of high quality.

Caroline B.

We had only positive feedback, the food was of good quality, the route (very little known by internationals, provincials and Parisians alike) aroused great interest.

canal cruise france

It was the vision of Pierre-Paul Riquet to connect the Atlantic to the Mediterranean by a canal. It would allow the safe passage of goods and services avoiding the long and dangerous route via the Straits of Gibraltar. This vision was presented to Colbert, Minister of the King of France in 1660.

It took Riquet 6 years of arguing with skeptics and adversaries to finally convince Colbert, the most powerful man in the country. On the advice of his Minister, Louis XIV ordered the construction of the Royal Canal of Languedoc, which, subsequently, under the French Revolution, became the “Canal du Midi”.

The canal system

About the Canal

Historical and monumental, the construction of the Burgundy Canal spanned more than 100 years and changed the surrounding landscape along a path of more than 250 kilometres. It includes more than 150 locks, a 3-kilometre tunnel, aqueducts, and reservoirs holding millions of tonnes of water. The canals flow through the capital city of Dijon . Nearby the canal, you have the wines and the vineyards of "The Climats, terroirs of Burgundy" , a UNESCO World Heritage.

Discover the best hotel barge cruises and self-drive boat trips on France’s magnificent Burgundy Canal. The calm inland waterways climb from the rivers Saône and Yonne heading high into rolling hills covered in dense forests of oak and elm.

As you cruise along the canal, you’ll pass through villages and small towns with typical bistros to appreciate and markets and shops to delve into. Medieval castles, ancient abbeys and fortified walls remain standing and waiting. Noble vineyards with some of the world's greatest red and white crus, the wine cellars are close by and offer you fascinating opportunities for wine tasting.

There are miles of towpaths, lanes and country roads perfect for walking and cycling! Scenic villages and magnificent UNESCO sites to visit such as Fontenay Abbey , the Hospices de Beaune and much more. This is a peaceful and calm destination, perfect for family and friend holidays.

The 10 finest French river cruises to take this year

T he problem with river cruising is that you often get blindsided by “star rivers”. There are several iconic waterways around the globe that just must be travelled, but benefits can be found if you shop around. Nowhere is this truer than in France .

A short ferry, train or plane ride lets you explore the châteaux of the Loire and the wonders of Paris on Seine, while a trip down the Rhône brings you Van Gogh’s favourite café and the opportunity to dance “sur le Pont d’Avignon”, for a small fee.

The trouble is, stars come with crowds, so looking beyond the obvious is a good idea. I defy anyone to gaze at the roof of the Hospices de Beaune on the Saône and not be mesmerised by its geometrical beauty, or walk the streets of Strasbourg on the Ill and not believe you’re back in medieval times. Sail the great rivers, of course, but don’t forget the little guys.

1. The Seine

The Bayeux Tapestry is one of the highlights of this cruise with a personal commentary on the 1066 Norman invasion as you move along its length. The Cathedral in Bayeux is also worth a visit, as is that of Rouen , the ancient capital of Normandy .

A visit to the D-Day beaches at Arromanches is soothed by walking around the harbour at Honfleur, with its narrow five story houses that seem to have been squashed together like the keys on a piano. Do try the local Calvados.

Riviera Travel (01283 893924: rivieratravel.co.uk ) has the 8 day ‘The Seine, Paris and Normandy River’ cruise from £2,229 per person. Price includes Flights/Eurostar, Free wifi and drink/beverages package. Calling at Paris, Giverny, Rouen, Caudebec. Departs 2024 23 rd September.

2. The Gironde, Dordogne and Garonne

Bordeaux is a world capital of wine , so as you might expect, names normally associated with supermarket shelves such as Saint-Emilion and Cadillac are part of this cruise. Entered through one of its seven medieval gates, St Emilion has a charming cobblestone village where Grands Crus Classé wines and beautiful architecture are a perfect match.

Similarly, part of the central square in Libourne is surrounded by the traditional arcades and is especially lively on market days. At Blaye, Vauban’s 17 th century citadel is a military masterpiece complete with village and ramparts to explore.

Scenic (0161 516 5548; scenic.co.uk ) has the 8 day ‘Bordeaux Affair’ cruise from £2,532 per person. Price includes Flights, Free wifi and drink/beverages package. Calling at Bordeaux, Lilbourne, Blaye, Cadillac, Bordeaux. Departs 2024 11 th October.

3. The Rhône, Saone and Seine

Exploring France by travelling on three of its rivers, with extended stays at ports of call to explore their hinterland, is a great way to truly discover the country. This cruise offers a private, after dark concert in Rouen’s cathedral and a visit to the Normandy beaches.

You’ll also lock eyes on the towering 2,000-year-old Pont du Gard Roman aqueduct and view the private rooms at Versailles as Marie Antoinette saw them. In Beaune, taste local camembert along with some of the world’s finest Chardonnay wines, and in Giverny, take a stroll through Monet’s beautiful garden at the house where the painter lived for over 40 years.

Uniworld (0808 168 9231; uniworld.com/uk ) has the 15 day ‘Grand France’ cruise from £5,849 per person. Price includes flights, free wifi and drink/beverages package. Calling at Arles, Avignon, Viviers, Lyon, Mâcon , Rouen, Paris. Departs 2025 23 rd March.

Technically, you’ll see more of Germany than France on this journey, but the River Ill, which surrounds the Unesco-listed Grande Île at the centre of Strasbourg, is worth an honourable mention.

The pink-sandstone facade of the Gothic-style Strasbourg Cathedral, with its cache of ancient murals and astronomical clock, looms large. Canals branch off from the main river course creating scenic walkways and bridges, adding to the allure of the ancient cityscape. Explore the red, half timbered houses of Bernkastel and play spot the castle as you sail further south along the Rhine Valley.

Avalon Waterways (0330 0588243; avalonwaterways.co.uk ) has the 11 day ‘Rhine and Mosel (Southbound)’ cruise from £3,620 per person. Price includes return flights, rail travel, free wines and beers. Calling at Amsterdam , Cologne, Kobelenz, Speyer, Strasbourg, Breisach, Basel. Departs 2024 9th October.

5. The Yonne and Loing

The waters of the Yonne north of Paris are too shallow for bigger boats, so this cruise lets you experience a quieter slice of French history and life. The Cathedral Saint-Etienne in Sens was one of the first gothic cathedrals to be built in France, while Moret-Loing-et-Orvanne lets you visit the grandeur and magnificence of Fontainebleau. Barbizon has a fascinating eponymous art museum and the studios of Rousseau and Millet, who lived and worked here.

Great Railway Journeys (01904 734 152; greatrail.com ) has the 7 day ‘Waterways of The Yonne, Paris and The Petite Seine by Barge’ cruise from £2,595 per person.

Price includes return rail travel from London, free wifi and drinks package. Calling at Paris, Melun, Barbizon, Moret-Loing-et-Orvanne and Sens. Departs 2024 4th September.

6. The Rhône and Saône

There is something magical about Arles. Not just that you can sit in the café where Van Gogh watched the world go by then walk a few yards to explore the virtually intact Roman amphitheatre, but the slow pace of life is all around.

Perched on the banks of the Saône, Mâcon has a café-lined promenade, while an overnight stay in Lyon lets you enjoy the city’s best restaurants and watering holes. At Avignon, you can explore the Palais des Papes as well as the huge indoor market to pick up Provençal snacks.

Newmarket Holidays (0333 060 1339; newmarketholidays.co.uk ) has the 7 night  ‘Rhône, Burgundy and Provence cruise’ from £2,340 per person. Price includes flights, free wifi, premium all-inclusive drinks package. Calling at Chalon-sur-Saone, Mâcon, Lyon, Avignon, Arles, La Voulte-sur-Rhône. Departs 2024  14th September.

7. Canal du Midi

The Mediterranean section of the 18 th century-built Canal du Midi is often referred to as both a technical innovation and a work of art. Between Portiragnes to Béziers alone, you’ll cross an aqueduct over the River Orb and ascend a seven-lock flight of unique, oval gateways. With a visit to the double walled city of Carcassonne and also Pézenas, Languedoc’s ancient capital, a truffle hunt, a private wine tasting and passing through Europe’s oldest canal tunnel, this cruise lets you get under the skin of Provence.

European Waterways (01753 598555; europeanwaterways.com ) has the 6-night ‘Classic Canal du Midi cruise’ from £4,850 per person. Price includes local transfers, all meals with wines on board, a 24/7 open bar, excursions/admittance fees as per the itinerary, bicycles and spa pool. Calling at Marseillan, Portiragnes, Béziers, Capestang, Sallèles d’Aude, Le Somail. Departs 2024 22nd September.

8. The Saône

Passing through Burgundy — a wine region that needs no introduction — this cruise lets you visit walled towns including Beaune with its beautiful 14 th century hospices complete with glazed tile roof and Tournus, which in turn offers its remarkable Romanesque Abbey Saint-Philibert. You’ll berth at towns that reverberate with the names found on sought after red wine labels, finally arriving at the culinary and architectural box of delights that is Lyon.

AmaWaterways (0800 520 2250; amawaterways.co.uk ) has the 7 night ‘Flavours of Burgundy Cruise’ from £2,754 per person based on a Cat E Stateroom. Price includes flights from London or Manchester and savings of £1,000 per couple.  Calling at Dijon, Seurre, Chalon-sur-Saône, Tournus, Mâcon, Lyon. Departs 2025 27th March.

9. The Loire

The chateaux of the Loire will always be a draw, and while this cruise has an all-day excursion to discover them, Nantes is a jewel in its own right. The castle of the Dukes of Brittany, giant mechanical elephants — yes really — and taking coffee in La Cigale,  the wonderful 19 th century Belle Epoch Brasserie, are essential sites to tick off.

Explore Angers with its Terra Botanica, a plant-themed amusement park, the Château d’Angers and its Apocalypse Tapestry and the museum of St Nazaire. The 96-guest MS Loire Princess adds to the experience as a luxury paddle steamer designed specifically for the river.

CroisieEurope (01756 691269; croisieurope.co.uk ) has the 6 day ‘The Loire Valley, a Royal Legacy Cruise’ from £1,752 per person, including all meals, drinks and return flights from London Gatwick and overseas transfers. Calling at St Nazaire, Nantes, Anciens, Chalonnes-sur-Loire, Nantes. Departs 2024 23 rd  July.

10. The Rhône and Rhine

This cruise offers something special. The chance to experience and compare the Provençal lifestyle of Arles with the Franco-German culture of Strasbourg. In essence a cultural journey along the Rhône and the Rhine. Explore Avignon’s grand Palace of the Popes and Cologne’s majestic cathedral, both Unesco sites.

Savour Lyon’s rich culinary traditions and the Rhineland’s hearty flavours and admire the landscapes that inspired Van Gogh in the Netherlands and Provence.

Viking (0800 319 66 60; vikingrivercruises.co.uk ) has the 14 day ‘Lyon, Provence and The Rhineland’ from £5,390 per person. Price includes all meals, drinks and return flights from Gatwick and overseas transfers. Calling at Avignon, Arles, Viviers, Tournon, Vienne , Lyon, Burgundy, Basel, Breisach, Strasbourg, Speyer, Rudesheim. Departs 2025 21st May.

If you’re travelling by Eurostar , many cruise companies now offer regional airport and train station departures. Therefore, the price mentioned on the website can be different to what you actually pay. Plus offers come and go, so it’s always a good idea to look around before you book.

Princess Cruises Sails to Prime Viewing Spot for 2026 Total Solar Eclipse in Europe

Sky princess departs southampton on august 8, 2026;

By downloading this image you agree to the Princess asset use terms and conditions

FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla.,  (May 3, 2024) – Astrotourism is top of mind for travelers making special trips for phenomenal experiences in the sky—and with the recent “take-your-breath-away” total solar eclipse, thousands of cruisers onboard Emerald Princess and Discovery Princess off the coast of Mexico caught a glimpse of the astounding total darkness event.

The next, not-to-be-missed total solar eclipse takes place on August 12, 2026, and once again a Princess cruise ship will be perfectly positioned, this time in northern Spain, to witness this bucket list event - two minutes and 18 seconds of totality. The 3,660-guest Sky Princess departs Southampton August 8, 2026, on a 14-day Mediterranean cruise, highlighted with total eclipse viewing while the ship is in its path at sea off the coast of Spain.

“The best way to see a total solar eclipse is via cruise ship, and our guests who recently experienced this rare occurrence on Discovery Princess and Emerald Princess were simply blown away,” said John Padgett, Princess Cruises president. “We make it easy for guests to come aboard, relax and meet other eclipse enthusiasts. It’s truly a special opportunity.”

The Total Eclipse Sky Princess Voyage goes on sale May 23, 2024, with rates starting at $2,199* per person. During the eclipse, Sky Princess guests will gather on the top decks with Princess safety glasses for viewing, as well as enjoy lectures from astronomy experts, themed treats and drinks, stargazing at night, solar system trivia and more.

This incredible, 14-day Mediterranean cruise sailing takes place August 8-22, 2026, roundtrip from Southampton (London), and visits seven historical and vibrant ports, including:

  • Cherbourg, France - one of France’s greatest ports with art and history museums, its basilica, the Ravalet castle and the Cité de la Mer maritime museum.
  • Bilbao, Spain – located in northern Spain, Bilbao is surrounded by green mountains and is the de facto capital of Basque Country, with a skyscraper-filled downtown. It’s famed for the Frank Gehry–designed Guggenheim Museum Bilbao.
  • Malaga, Spain - famous as Picasso's birthplace and the gateway to Spain's Costa del Sol, Malaga mixes warm vacation vibes with Andalusia's indomitable spirit.
  • Cartagena, Spain - founded by the Carthaginians around 220 B.C., the city boomed during the Roman period. Among its many Roman ruins are a 1st-century B.C. theater and Casa de la Fortuna, a villa with murals and mosaics.
  • Gibraltar – this British Overseas Territory and headland is located on Spain's south coast. It’s dominated by the Rock of Gibraltar, a 1,398-foot limestone ridge.
  • Lisbon, Portugal – the capital and largest city of Portugal, Lisbon is mainland Europe's westernmost capital city and the only one along the Atlantic coast.
  • La Coruña, Spain – in the Galicia region of northwest Spain, it’s known for its Roman lighthouse, the Tower of Hercules, which has sweeping coastal views.

“Our recent solar eclipse cruises were completely sold out so interested guests should book this Sky Princess cruise as soon as it opens on May 23. It truly will be an experience to remember,” Padgett added.

At Chanel Cruise, a 'Marseille All Day' Kind of Vibe

Creative Director Virginie Viard staged her latest collection for the house by the French seaside

chanel cruise 2024 show

Today, Chanel’s creative director Virginie Viard staged the house’s Cruise 2024/2025 runway show in Marseille, France, on the rooftop of the Cite Radieuse, an iconic modern apartment complex built between 1947 and 1952 by Charles-Édouard Jeanneret, better known as Le Corbusier. The futuristic concrete space is currently an arts center with ongoing exhibitions and programming, a gathering place for the diversified creative scene that resides in the southern seaside town. In tandem with the show, Chanel also set up its own radio station for a podcast featuring conversations between a rotating mix of artists and creatives, like actress Marion Cotillard, sound director Michel Gaubert, chef Valentin Raffali, and curator and art historian Emmanuelle Luciani.

Marseille is a far cry from the streets of Manchester, where Viard transported guests for her pre-fall 2024 collection, but not so distant from the inspiration behind Chanel’s spring 2024 offering, Deauville, the French seaside escape where Gabrielle Chanel first launched her business as a milliner.

chanel cruise 2024 show

What all three destinations have in common is Viard’s artistic ties to them. Each place signifies the designer’s personal connection to music, art, architecture, and, of course, the DNA of Chanel. Ever since stepping into the role of creative director in 2019, Viard has been focused on appealing to a Millennial and Gen Z customer with vintage-inspired, sometimes cheeky collections, but the last several shows have proven that she’s found a sweet spot between novelty and nostalgia.

As Viard wrote in her collection notes about today’s show locale, “The sun, architecture, music and dance: Marseille also has a very strong sense of freedom.” She added, “I was inspired by the codes of lifestyle, of everyday life, and by all the things that invite movement. The sea and the wind made me want to play with wetsuits.” Indeed, the collection was filled with beachy references, though nothing that hit you over the head. Instead, it felt relaxed and cool, with effortless tweeds, sexy-but-not-skimpy swimsuits, sharp denim, and details like broderie anglaise, diving hoods, and press studs. These were urban-dwelling gallery girls on vacation.

chanel cruise 2024 show

A crochet bermuda short and matching cardigan could have skewed granny but didn’t, thanks to the addition of a mixed material gold belt and charm-bedecked open chainmail halter top. A grey open-weave mini skirt and sweater were given a sporty bent with a hooded half-zip cutout with a quiet, interlocking “C” logo at the chest. The rainbow-striped fuzzy mini tube dress and matching cropped cardi were also cool, as were the finale looks all in white–a breezy parade of confident Chanel women exploring the port town in their terrycloth platform flip-flops or no-frills black patent leather flats.

“Marseille is a city that puts me in touch with my emotions,” Viard wrote in her collection notes. “I tried to capture its power of attraction, its breath of fresh air, and to convey the energy that reigns there.” Energy is something that Viard has been able to conjure in her last three collections (inclusive of this one). It’s a youthful, chilled-out vibe that resonates with Coco Chanel’s legacy of making clothes for women who need to move freely—but always stylishly—in the world, whether by land or sea.
