Spot the big five on your safari adventure.

Safari tours in Africa are just as diverse as the continent itself, though these types of trips typically require a large sum of money. Whether you want to spend a few days gorilla trekking in Uganda or a couple weeks spotting the "big five" – lions, leopards, African elephants, rhinos and Cape buffalos – in South Africa, you'll find an array of tours to best suit your needs. To help you narrow down your options, U.S. News compiled a list of 12 can't-miss African safari tours. Read on to find your once-in-a-lifetime trip.

Note: Some of the African countries in this article may require travelers to get an entry visa and certain vaccinations in order to visit. Jump to the list of visa and vaccination requirements by country at the bottom of this page for more information.

&Beyond

Visitors who don't want to sacrifice creature comforts while on safari will appreciate &Beyond's offerings. During the tour operator's 10-day Kings of the Jungle safari – which starts at $11,340 per person – travelers will see breathtaking natural wonders like the Ngorongoro Crater and the Maasai Mara savanna. But the highlight of this journey is its four-night stay at Tanzania's Serengeti National Park . After watching animals like wildebeest and zebras partake in the great migration while also spotting lions, giraffes and more, vacationers retreat to high-end tents and lodges with private bathrooms.

Wilderness Safaris

For some of Africa's most jaw-dropping scenery, opt for the seven-night Namibian Adventure Safari tour offered by Wilderness Safaris. This weeklong trip features visits to the Namib Desert's dune-filled Sossusvlei region (which you may recognize from the film "Mad Max: Fury Road") and the mountainous Palmwag Concession – a protected area with springboks, giraffes, black rhinos and more. The package's per person fee starts at $6,725, which covers most meals, park entrance fees, and transfers from Namibia's capital Windhoek and between the safari destinations. It also covers your stay at properties like the fully solar-powered Hoanib Skeleton Coast Camp and the five-star Little Kulala lodge amid the stunning desert.

Wild Rwanda Safaris

Adventurous travelers sticking to a more conservative budget should consider Wild Rwanda Safaris' Bwindi Gorilla Safari. The three-day package features a full day in southwestern Uganda's Bwindi Impenetrable National Park (a haven for silverback gorillas) and an adjacent Batwa Pygmy community. Wild Rwanda Safaris allows guests to choose between midrange, luxury and super luxury accommodation, which can help keep costs down if necessary. The company's packages include the $700 permit required to visit the gorilla park. The round-trip journey by safari vehicle to and from Kigali, Rwanda, and English-speaking guide services are also covered in all rates. The tour can begin from Kampala, Uganda, as well, although you'll spend longer on the road to the park.

Nomad Tanzania

Sign up for Nomad Tanzania's Southern Tanzania safari and you're bound to get an up-close look at Tanzania's diverse wildlife. Offering eight days of activities, including game drives and boat trips in Ruaha National Park and Nyerere National Park, this safari gives you prime opportunities to spot lions, cheetahs, leopards and elephants, among other species. What's more, lodging at the company's campsites, select meals, and flights to and from Dar es Salaam are factored into the package's prices. Expect to pay a minimum of $5,700 per person; prices vary depending on the time of year, and the tour isn't offered in April and May.

Micato Safaris

If you want to explore multiple destinations while on safari with plenty of comfort (but a price tag to match), book the 15-day Micato Grand Safari. This outing by Micato Safaris starts with a two-day visit to Nairobi, Kenya, before continuing to the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, Maasai Mara National Reserve, and the Amboseli and Serengeti national parks for wildlife-viewing excursions. During your trip, you'll see Mount Kilimanjaro as zebras, gazelles and more roam in the foreground. The package costs at least $22,450 per person (based on double occupancy rates) and includes a hot air balloon ride, a camel tour led by members of the Samburu tribe, and lodging at upscale properties like Serengeti's Four Seasons outpost. The company also offers various extensions allowing you to explore other parts of Africa, from the island paradise of Zanzibar to the deserts of Namibia.

Rothschild Safaris

If your ideal safari vacation consists of customizing your trip from start to finish, consider an outing with Rothschild Safaris. The company offers itineraries in locales like Zambia and Madagascar , but if you're hoping to catch a glimpse of the big five animals, the Essence of Tanzania safari is a good bet. This nine-day experience, which embarks from Arusha and returns there by plane, includes game-viewing drives in Tarangire National Park and accommodations like canvas tents and farmhouse lodges. Elephants, zebras and lions are just some of the animals you may spot during your journey. You'll also have the opportunity to go on a nighttime safari to spot nocturnal wildlife.

Lion World Travel

As the trip name implies, Lion World Travel's 10-day Best of Cape Town & Botswana vacation package combines sightseeing in Cape Town, South Africa , with a classic safari in Botswana. During the latter half of the itinerary, visitors will explore Botswana's Okavango Delta (home to cheetahs, crocodiles, hippos and more) and Chobe National Park, which is believed to have Africa's largest elephant population. Prices start at $4,299 per person and cover game drives; many of your meals; and stays at luxury hotels, camps and lodges. You'll need to pay an extra charge for the flights within the tour (Cape Town to Botswana as well as Botswana to Johannesburg ).

Discover Africa

For an inside-out trip through the natural wonders of Botswana, Discover Africa's nine-day Epic Botswana Adventure is a formidable option. You'll start out at a riverside lodge on the Chobe River – a great location for elephant spotting – before moving onto the marshy Okavango Delta, a wildlife-rich area where you can spot a huge range of animals from leopards to rhinos. The safari ends at the Makgadikgadi Pans National Park, a good place to admire wildlife like zebras and buffalo on the savanna as well as salt pans from a former lake. You'll stay in upscale lodges and campsites within close reach of the wilderness. All meals and transport along the tour are included in the price tag (which starts at $4,800 per person), but international flights are excluded.

Wild Wings Safaris

safari holiday ideas

If you're looking to have a broader experience that mixes in some history and beach time, consider Wild Wings Safaris' eight-day Battlefields, Bush and Beach Safari. You'll start off visiting some of South Africa's historic sites from the Boer wars, before moving on to the Phinda Private Game Reserve, which doesn't allow day visitors, so you should be able to look out for the big five without too many crowds. The tour wraps up at Thonga Beach Lodge, where you can snorkel or scuba dive near coral reefs in the Indian Ocean. As far as safaris go, this one is an affordable option, starting at about $2,795 per person with all meals included as well as a rental car; for the cheapest price, you will need to drive yourself between the destinations, but it's possible to pay an additional fee for a driver to guide you instead.

Cuckoo Safaris

Aerial few of the world famous Victoria Falls with a large rainbow over the falls. This is right at the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe in Southern Africa. The mighty Victoria Falls at Zambezi river are one of the most visited touristic places in Africa.

This tour company kicks off its tours from the majestic Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe, with a host of safaris that range from two days to nine, across Zimbabwe, Zambia and Botswana, including some family-friendly choices. For an affordable option, there's the four-day Discover Victoria Falls, Chobe and Hwange Park safari, which will take you on two full-day tours to Chobe National Park (across the border in Botswana) and to Hwange, Zimbabwe's largest national park, where you should keep your eyes peeled for lions, elephants and more. This safari also includes a sunset cruise on the Zambezi River. The price starts at $900 per person, which includes the tours plus breakfast, lunch and lodging in Victoria Falls; travelers will need to pay for entrance fees to the parks and dinner.

Compass Odyssey

Explore the savanna and deserts of southwest Africa with Compass Odyssey's eight-day Namibia Wildlife Safari. You'll visit a community-based conservation area in Damaraland – known for its desert-adapted elephants, oryx, giraffes and other wildlife – while staying in the rustic-chic Doro Nawas Camp. You'll also spend two days in Etosha National Park, seeking wildlife at the park's bustling waterholes by day and embarking on an evening game drive as well. Starting at $3,750 per person, the tour includes most meals and all park entry fees, but not flights; the company does allow the tour to be customized on request.

Vaccination and visa requirements for African countries

Some popular safari destinations may require you to have received certain vaccinations in order to enter the country as a tourist. Inoculation requirements can include vaccination against COVID-19 and yellow fever, and you'll need to get these vaccines before departing on your trip. Be sure to bring proof of vaccinations with you. If you are transiting through another country en route to your safari tour, you must check that you also meet immunization requirements for the stopover location.

Note that, outside of what's required, there are a number of other vaccinations that are recommended, so ensure you're up to date and fully protected before you travel. In addition, many safari locations are prone to malaria; you should consult with your doctor to see if you need to bring anti-malaria medication on your trip.

Safari countries have varying visa requirements for travelers from the U.S. – these are detailed below. Depending on your itinerary, you may need a single- or multiple-entry visa, and some visas require you to apply in advance of traveling and/or have a certain number of blank pages in your passport. Regardless of your destination, your passport should be valid for at least six months before you leave for your trip.

Here are the vaccine and visa requirements for major safari destinations as of November 2022:

Botswana: If you have recently visited a country where yellow fever is common, you will need to be vaccinated against this illness. This does not include the U.S. but does include a number of countries in Africa, Central and South America. Consult the World Health Organization's website for a list of countries with risk of yellow fever transmission, including Kenya and Uganda.

U.S. citizens and nationals can stay in Botswana for 90 days without a visa.

Kenya: Travelers to Kenya must have been vaccinated against COVID-19 with the last shot administered more than 14 days before arrival in the country. Unvaccinated visitors can enter with a negative PCR test, conducted no more than 72 hours before departure. Proof of COVID-19 tests or vaccines must be uploaded to an online system called Panabios. Kenya is a country where you'll be at risk of yellow fever transmission; it also requires those traveling from other places with yellow fever or cholera outbreaks to be vaccinated against these illnesses. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that you protect yourself against yellow fever before your trip here.

Americans need an e-visa to enter Kenya. You should apply online at the eVisa government website no more than eight weeks before your trip, as visas are not available upon arrival in Kenya. See more on the U.S. Department of State's website .

Namibia: Those traveling from a country where yellow fever is common need to be vaccinated against it. No visa is required as long as you're staying for 90 days or less.

Rwanda: If you're coming from a country where yellow fever is endemic, a yellow fever vaccination is required before departure.

U.S. citizens and nationals can be issued a 30-day visitor visa on arrival in Rwanda or through the Rwandan Embassy in Washington, D.C. A single-entry visa costs $50, and it's recommended you bring sufficient cash in U.S. dollars to pay for this (although credit card payment may be accepted at Kigali International Airport). Consult the State Department website for more information.

South Africa: A yellow fever vaccination is required if you're traveling from a country with a risk of transmission. No visa is required for stays of 90 days or less.

Tanzania: Travelers must be able to present proof of COVID-19 vaccination with a QR code to enter Tanzania. Unvaccinated travelers must take a PCR test no more than 72 hours before departure, and the test results should be accessible by QR code. Yellow fever vaccines are mandatory if you're traveling from a location where yellow fever is present – including if you spend more than 12 hours in transit in such a country.

Visas are required for tourism in Tanzania. You can apply for a single-entry, 90-day visa online for $50 – and be sure to print a copy of the approval to bring with you. The processing period takes up to 10 days. You can also obtain a visa on arrival for a $100 fee; it's recommended you bring cash to cover this. Find more Tanzanian visa information on the State Department website .

Uganda: To enter Uganda, you must either be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or present a negative test taken no more than 72 hours before departure. Like Kenya, Uganda is a country with risk of yellow fever transmission. All visitors must show proof of vaccination against yellow fever to enter Uganda, regardless of where you're traveling from.

American visitors to Uganda must apply online for an electronic visa before departure; arriving in Uganda without completing this process could result in your detainment. Visit the State Department website to learn more.

Zambia: Visitors who are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 must show proof of vaccination but do not need a test to enter Zambia; unvaccinated travelers must undergo a PCR test no more than 72 hours before departure. Yellow fever vaccines are only required if you're coming from an area considered at risk.

Visas are required to visit Zambia, but these can be obtained online before your departure or at a port of entry. Check the State Department website for more details.

Zimbabwe: To enter Zimbabwe, travelers must either be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or must take a negative PCR test no more than 48 hours before your departure. As with other countries on this list, visitors from countries with yellow fever outbreaks also require a vaccine against this illness.

U.S. visitors can obtain a 30-day, single-entry visa upon arrival in Zimbabwe for $30. If you're taking a tour that requires you to leave and reenter Zimbabwe, be sure to get a double-entry visa for $45. You can learn more from the State Department website .

Africa Itinerary Suggestions

An African safari is one of the world's greatest adventures. Our itineraries below have been created to inspire your upcoming adventure to Africa, whether you're a first-timer who wants a traditional safari holiday, or an experienced safari goer who's seeking more adventure and lesser-known locations.

safari holiday ideas

Balloon Safaris

This type of safari is a once in a lifetime experience. Floating into the air as the rising sun paints the sky with beautiful colours is something you’ll never forget, and we love that jaw-dropping moment you fly over grazing buffalo herds, or rustle the leaves of an acacia tree where a giraffe feeds.

safari holiday ideas

Beach Retreats

Though an Africa safari is incredible, thought-provoking and simply life-changing, it can be an exhausting experience - which is why here at Africa Sky we love the idea of a bush to beach holiday. How better to relax after a trip of early mornings and long safaris than on a beautiful sugary sand beach? From private bays to endless miles of white sand, our beach retreat destinations have something special waiting for you.

safari holiday ideas

Big 5 Safaris

Of all Africa's animals it's the big five that are most revered. And they are as resplendent as you are imagining - dreamy animals that celebrate the beauty and power of the wild. Quite understandably, it's the big five that top most wish lists when it comes to safaris, and we have plenty of tips for ticking off all five of these magnificent creatures.

safari holiday ideas

Big Cat Safaris

A leopard draped across an acacia branch, a cheetah nursing her cub in the high grass, a lion's mane fluttering on the breeze...of all the wild mammal experiences, it's the big cats that really get the heart going. And you're not just admiring them in repose - you'll be seeing them in iconic prowling mode, seeking their prey and basking in the sunlight.

safari holiday ideas

Bird Watching Safaris

The magnificent Shoebill with its shoe-shaped bill, Blue-headed Sunbirds with their kaleidoscope of blue, purple and yellow feathers, the tiny yellow belly of a Sharpe’s Pipit…Africa’s diverse ecosystems are full of birdlife. Whether you’re a twitcher looking for a megatick, or a wildlife enthusiast in general, Africa’s birdlife is especially prolific.

safari holiday ideas

The Blue Train offers you a window into the stunning authenticity of South Africa. This luxurious private train traverses landscapes that delight in their diversity, from ocean to desert to savannah, crossing colonial relics and mountain passes, with the odd wild mammal roaming around.

safari holiday ideas

Camel Safaris

A camel safari offers a deep and spiritual connection with the landscape, the elegant desert animal leading you on an adventure across wild and remote plains. Most commonly experienced in northern Kenya, this is a chance to evoke the true meaning of the Swahili word safari, which translates into English as journey.

safari holiday ideas

Conservancy Safaris

Private conservancies and concessions blend spectacular wildlife abundance with a captivating intimacy. 50-strong elephants herds, a forest alive with leopards' scents, hippos playing in the river below the suite, and hardly another person for miles around...we think that conservancies are the essence of the luxury safari experience.

safari holiday ideas

Family Safaris

Safari enchants the whole family. Imagine the thrill of seeing a huge elephant herd. Now imagine how it must feel if you're seeing the same intimate scene through a child's eyes.

safari holiday ideas

First-Time Safaris

Intimate and immersive, an African safari offers one of the world's greatest travel experiences. The scale is inspiring, the diversity makes every moment special, and the rhythm of the wild is something that compels most people to return to Africa.

safari holiday ideas

Gorilla Trekking

Beneath a thick rainforest canopy you get a thrilling first glimpse. Emotion is everywhere and the intimacy brings goosebumps. Only around 1000 mountain gorillas remain. And you're soon surrounded by an entire troop of them. For a unique wildlife experience, there really is nothing comparable, anywhere else in the world, than a gorilla trekking safari.

safari holiday ideas

Honeymoon Safaris

Africa provides a dreamy honeymoon destination, elevating the escapism with the unique beauty of safari. It's something new and exotic, with everyday offering a truly memorable experience. Yet a safari is also wonderfully relaxing; the African landscapes runs on an ancient rhythm that is perfect for romance.

Elephants in Ambesoli

They remain our most popular type of holiday and it is no wonder – the chance to experience the raw beauty of nature, observe incredible wildlife in their natural habitat, witness unforgettable moments, all followed by some laid-back beach days…an irresistible combination.

To help you decide on the best option safari and beach combination for you, we’ve divided this article up into classic combinations, animal specific, active options and more unusual safaris.

Classic safari and beach

1. kenya safari and beach.

When it comes to classic beach and bush options, Kenya often comes up top. Home to the world-famous Masai Mara, as well as a plethora of other wonderful and very accessible safari areas including Samburu, Lewa and Laikipia, Kenya easily allows you to combine two different safari areas together, and then it is a short hop to the soft, sandy beaches of the Kenyan coast or Zanzibar .

Kuni Jogoo House On Lamu Island Kenya 1

  • Big five safaris : spot lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants and buffaloes.
  • Great Migration : if you visit during the annual Great Migration (typically from July to October), you'll witness millions of wildebeests, zebras, and gazelles crossing the Mara River in search of better grazing lands. This incredible natural spectacle is a highlight of any Kenya safari.
  • Meet the Maasai or Samburu tribes : engaging with these communities allows you to learn about their unique traditions, customs, and ways of life.
  • Combine two different safari areas: so, you experience different wildlife, as well as appreciate the varied landscape the country has to offer from vast savannas to dramatic escarpments and picturesque lakes. The sheer beauty of the scenery enhances your safari experience.
  • Varied accommodation : choose between traditional tented camps or more modern safari lodges ranging from ultra-luxe to more basic accommodation.
  • Range of safari activities : combine 4x4 safaris with walking, horse riding, helicopters or even camel safaris.
  • Hot air balloon: one of the most popular bucket list activities is to do a sunrise hot air balloon over the Masai Mara giving you a completely new, birds-eye perspective of the wildlife below.
  • A quick hop to the beach : after the excitement and adventure of a safari, unwinding at one of Kenya's beautiful beaches offers a sense of serenity. Whether you choose the coastline along the Indian Ocean, the idyllic islands like Lamu or Diani or pop over to Zanzibar, you can indulge in sunbathing, swimming, and various water activities.
  • Water sports : Kenya's coastline offers excellent opportunities for water sports like snorkelling, scuba diving, kite surfing, and deep-sea fishing. The warm waters and vibrant marine life make it a paradise for ocean enthusiasts.
  • Coral Reefs and Marine Life : the marine reserves and coral reefs off the Kenyan coast provide fantastic opportunities for snorkelling and diving, allowing you to explore colourful marine ecosystems and encounter marine species like turtles, dolphins, and various fish species.
  • Easily accessible with direct flights from the UK to Kenya.

2. Tanzania safari and Zanzibar beach

Tanzania offers a similar, traditional safari experience to Kenya and is also home to the tropical spice island of Zanzibar, one of the most popular beach destinations in Africa. Combining a Tanzania safari with Zanzibar offers a complete East African experience, allowing you to explore diverse wildlife, immerse yourself in local culture, and enjoy the best of both worlds with thrilling adventures on land and tranquil relaxation by the sea.

Lions In The Serengeti Tanzania

  • Big Five : spot the Big Five, as well as an abundance of other animals and bird species.
  • Great Migration: Serengeti National Park is renowned for its vast savannas and the annual Great Migration, where millions of wildebeests and zebras migrate in search of greener pastures.
  • Ngorongoro Crater: a UNESCO natural wonder with a high concentration of wildlife in a unique caldera setting. Home to the Big Five on the crater floor.

  • Varied accommodation : Tanzania offers a range of luxury lodges and tented camps that provide a high level of comfort and personalized service, enhancing your safari experience.
  • Easy beach access - Zanzibar is located just off the Tanzanian coast, making it easy to combine a safari with a beach holiday. You can take a short flight or a boat ride from the mainland to Zanzibar.

Wildebeest Migration In Serengeti National Park Tanzania

3. South Africa Kruger safari and Mozambique beaches

The Kruger National Park is a short hop from Johannesburg airport in South Africa , which is the same airport to head towards the beaches of Mozambique , so these two destinations combine wonderfully well as a beach and bush option.

Leopard In Kruger

  • Abundant wildlife : spot the Big Five, as well as an abundance of other animals and over 500 bird species. The Kruger National Park is a wonderful place to see rare wild dogs.
  • Private Reserves: South Africa was the first country to introduce private reserves for those wanting a more exclusive game-viewing experience. There are no fences between the Kruger National Park and reserves such as the famous Sabi Sands which border these meaning vast amounts of wildlife, without the crowds and a whole host of additional activities available.
  • High-standard accommodation : South Africa offers a range of luxury lodges and tented camps which are often priced more competitively than those in Kenya and Tanzania. Generally, South Africa is known for having exceptionally high accommodation, service and food standards.
  • Self - drive : If you want to explore at your own pace, the Kruger in South Africa is one of the most popular places to try a self-drive safari thanks to the tarmac roads which are well signposted.
  • Walking and night safaris : In the private reserves attached to Kruger you can try a whole host of other safari activities including walking safaris and night drives.
  • Stunning Archipelagos : Bazaruto Archipelago in Mozambique is easy to access from Johannesburg. This group of islands, including Bazaruto, Benguerra, and Magaruque, offers some of the most pristine and picturesque beaches in Mozambique. The crystal-clear waters, white sand dunes, and abundant marine life make it a paradise for snorkelling, diving, and water sports.

These magnificent creatures pass through the area on their annual journey, providing a thrilling opportunity to witness their majestic displays.

4. South Africa’s Eastern Cape and the Garden Route

Another enduring popular option is to combine a South Africa safari with the Garden Route which allows you to have a very varied trip combining a safari with buzzing Cape Town, the Winelands and the Garden Route beaches.

Typically, you would either choose to combine the Kruger National Park (or one of the private conservancies attached) and then fly down to Cape Town from Johannesburg and begin the Garden Route from here, or else combine the garden route with Eastern Cape near the city of Port Elizabeth – we are going to focus on this second option.

The Eastern Cape is home to several private game reserves, such as Amakhala, Shamwari, and Kwandwe. After your safari experience in the Eastern Cape, you can easily proceed to the Garden Route , which starts not too far from the game reserves. You can drive along the scenic N2 highway, and within a few hours, you'll be immersed in the breathtaking beauty of the Garden Route.

This option is perfect if you want to dip your toe in a little bit of safari and add in some beach time, but to have a well-rounded and varied holiday.

Eastern Cape South Africa

  • Private Game Reserves: The Eastern Cape is home to several private game reserves, such as Amakhala, Shamwari, and Kwandwe, which offer exclusive safari experiences with luxurious lodges and intimate wildlife encounters.
  • Abundant Wildlife: These private game reserves boast diverse wildlife populations, including the Big Five, as well as other animals like cheetahs, zebras, giraffes, and various antelope species.
  • Malaria-Free Safaris : Unlike some other safari destinations in South Africa, the Eastern Cape is largely malaria-free, making it a safer option for families and travellers who prefer to avoid malaria-prone areas.
  • Family-Friendly : Many lodges in the Eastern Cape cater to families, offering child-friendly activities and accommodations, making it an excellent choice for family safaris.
  • Beautiful beaches: Such as Plettenberg Bay are very popular destinations along the Garden Route and have whale-watching opportunities (seasonal), and nature reserves like Robberg Nature Reserve. It is worth noting that the sea here isn’t as warm as the Indian Ocean.
  • Whale watching : Hermanus is one of the whale-watching capitals in the world and you can often see whales from the shore. The clifftop paths woven with flowers are an absolute must, and there are sandy beaches here too.
  • Ostriches : Oudtshoorn is located just off the Garden Route, and is known as the "Ostrich Capital of the World." It offers unique experiences like visiting ostrich farms and exploring the Cango Caves.
  • Winelands : Whilst not strictly the Garden Route, it is a short throw to the Winelands of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek which make a wonderful place to relax and enjoy long lunches surrounded by mountains and with some of the best wine in the world.
  • Cape Town : the cosmopolitan town of Cape Town has a huge array of museums, markets, and restaurants, as well as being home to a number of sandy beaches of which Camps Bay is particularly popular.

Unusual safari and beach combinations

If you’re looking for a completely different safari and beach experience, then Namibia could be for you. A safari within the desert is a world away from the vast, lush plains of the Masai Mara, and the harsh coastline of Namibia lends itself to discovering desert-adapted plants, seals, and adrenaline-fueled activities rather than sunbathing on a beach. Certainly not a classic beach and bush combination, but that’s the appeal!

A Namibia safari and beach holiday offer a perfect blend of adventure, wildlife encounters, stunning landscapes, and relaxation along the picturesque coastline. It's a journey that provides a deep appreciation for Namibia's diverse natural beauty and its unique offerings in both the desert and the sea.

  • Flamingos and pelicans: Just south of Swakopmund, Walvis Bay is known for its lagoon, which is a haven for birdlife, including flamingos and pelicans. Boat cruises in the lagoon offer opportunities to see dolphins, seals, and sometimes even whales.
  • Wild coastlines: The Skeleton Coast is a rugged and desolate coastline known for its shipwrecks and otherworldly landscapes. It provides a unique and eerie beauty for those seeking a more off-the-beaten-path beach experience, but ideal for those looking for adventure!
  • Go at your own pace : Namibia is predominately a self-drive destination allowing you to take your time, marvel at the incredible scenery and stop as you please.

Clothes for your safari holiday – ideas for your packing list

Classic knee length safari dress taupe Hickman & Bousfield safari outfitters

Safari holiday booked, and the dreaming of looking like Meryl Streep in Out of Africa has come to an abrupt stop. You’ve just noticed that many fly-in safaris come with the requirement to compress your entire wardrobe into a tiny bag weighing no more than 15kgs! Now there’s a knotty problem. How to downsize your safari packing list to keep you warm, cool, dry, comfortable? And looking good, without coughing up excess luggage fees.

Starting from the head down, here’s my holiday gift guide to the very best in African safari clothing for women from our friends at Hickman & Bousfield (of whom, more below the ideas and delicious clothes pictures).

The African sun is strong when you’re so close to the equator. So you’re going to need a hat. Baseball caps will do, but a broad brimmed version, such as the unisex  elegant fedora is better. It will save you from a painful burnt neck on game drives.

Safari Shirt

While African wildlife often use a flash of white as a warning signal that a predator is on its way – think of the back ends of impala as the leap away after a scare – a white linen shirt like H&B’s ‘ Safari Shirt In White Linen ’ works as well on a quad bike in the Makgadikgadi Pans as in a Winelands’ restaurant. The half sleeves protect shoulders and upper arms while the high collar can be turned up to cover the nape of the neck.

Safari Shirtdress

While safari camps have a laundry service and will often return washed items the same day, the key to packing light for your African holiday is having items which work throughout the day and can be layered with different accessories. The ‘ Safari Shirtdress In Brushed Cotton Twill ’ is great during the day or team it up with a pair of trousers in the evening and it’s suitable for a bush dinner or drinks round the fire.

Safari Shorts

Shorts are often easier than skirts to ensure you keep your dignity when clambering in and out of safari vehicles. I’m a fan of the Hickman & Bousfield ‘ Linen Mix ‘Tweed’ Shorts ’.

Safari Trousers

There are going to be times on holiday when you want to cover your legs. In the cool African evenings it has the double benefit of keeping you warm and avoiding the need to cover yourself in insect repellent. The H&B ‘ Dark Khaki Pleat Front Pants ’ can be worn long or with the cuff turned up to go three-quarter length.

Haman Towel

I was first introduced to the “Haman Towel in Sage” on safari in Botswana and have used mine on many holidays since. It’s a cover up when heading to or from the beach as well as a towel or blanket to lie on when I’m there. I’ve also wrapped it round my head on a quad-bike and round my shoulders on evenings under the stars.

Hickman & Bousfield

You’ve probably realised by now that Caroline Hickman’s classic safari kit is my kind of clothing. Caroline’s background is in costume design and she splits her time between Botswana’s Kalahari and London. She was looking for clothing in breathable fabrics which could work equally well on a game drive in Africa as it could on city streets. Finding a limited choice scattered across various retailers, she decided to manage her own range with partner Ralph Bousfield.

Ralph, owner of Uncharted Africa, guided my first mobile safari in Botswana, and he and Catherine make a stylish pair whether you meet them on the open salt-pans of the Makgadikgadi or in a London bar.

Caroline described her thoughts to me as follows “When Ralph’s clients fly in to our safari camps their luggage allowance is limited as the planes are tiny and use remote airstrips. Their holiday safari clothes need to be as appropriate on safari in desert conditions as they are in a restaurant in cosmopolitan Cape Town or on the beach in the Seychelles . My aim for the Hickman & Bousfield range is for them to be the go-to items for safari clothes, but also to be pieces that people are comfortable wearing when they’re not on holiday”

An added gift if you do decide to shop – Aardvark Safaris’ clients benefit from a 10% discount on anything in the range. Simply pop ‘ Aardvark10 ’ into the relevant box at checkout.
