At the heart of the film, though, are the other lost souls that Fern meets along her journey, embodying the collective feelings of both loneliness and freedom of those who choose a nomadic lifestyle.

The extra weight causes the RV to break down, and a risky law enforcement encounter almost gets them caught.

What else can possibly go wrong in one of the best comedy and crime road trip movies on this list?

When the boys realize that an expo featuring their favorite internet star is taking place not too far from their destination, they take matters into their own hands.

Winning a pig at a carnival and a rival family stealing the Heffley’s belongings round out the hijinks.

While the trip is far from perfect, at the heart of it lies a family who just needs time to reconnect.

We especially love the idea of taking their picturesque wine country road trip ourselves!

Sideways also makes for a great wine book read before or after the movie.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas Movie Poster with white man wearing large sunglasses and hat smoking but his neck is slightly distorted to fit title and swirling sky

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998)

Based on Hunter S. Thompson’s novel of the same name, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is a cult classic, dark comedy film following Raoul Duke and Dr. Gonzo’s drug-fueled road trip to Las Vegas.

In a rented red convertible, the two men hit the road with a suitcase full of narcotics in order so that Dr. Gonzo can cover a motorcycle race for a magazine.

Going through their stash at an alarming rate, they behave abhorrently, trash their hotel room, and run up an alarming room service tab.

This road trip film fantastically portrays not only an excessive drug binge but the shortcomings of the 1960s and the American Dream.

Wes convinces Luke to join him on a business road trip up the coast of California to find Luke’s “one that got away.”

At the heart of this road trip film, though, is a genuine perspective of work, marriage, and life’s commitments in your thirties.

The backdrop of Highway 1 isn’t bad to look at either!

The Fundamentals of Caring Film Poster with man and woman standing and person sitting between them

The Fundamentals of Caring (2016)

Along their journey – which includes Joyce calling Andy’s ex-girlfriend and a steak-eating contest – Andy realizes that he has more in common with his aggravating mother than he thought.

They begin to enjoy their time together until Joyce learns why Andy actually invited her.

Deceit is a common theme for familial movies on road trips – and the outcome can go one of two ways.

Come as You Are Movie Poster with four guys in a camper van and woman in black dress showing legs on top

Come as You Are (2019)

Three disabled men, Scotty, Matt, and Mo, take a road trip from Colorado to Montreal to lose their virginities at a brothel servicing special needs clients.

They are accompanied by a jaded travel nurse who drives and assists them.

This isn’t another comical, sex-motivated road trip, though. The film delicately presents the needs of the disabled community and offers us an opportunity to be empathetic and compassionate.

The one caveat of this inclusive road trip film is that all three main actors are able-bodied themselves.

Come As You Are is a remake of the acclaimed Belgian film, Hasta la Vista , which is based on the real-life of Asta Philpot.

The Trip to Spain Movie Poster with two white men at table with food and one pouring wine into a glass

Nostalgic of a trip he took as a young man, Steve convinces Rob to accompany him on a road trip from the Northern to Southern coast of Spain.

In addition to sampling epic Spanish fare, the men will talk about their respective lives, relationships, fatherhood, and midlife crises, all with an heir of witty British satire.

The Trip to Spain is part of Coogan and Brydon’s satirical culinary film series including The Trip and The Trip to Italy .

The 25 Best Road Trip Movies Ever

Nomadland is the latest in a long and treasured genre.

best road trip movies

Our product picks are editor-tested, expert-approved. We may earn a commission through links on our site. Why Trust Us?

Nomadland is the latest in a long line of movies that suggests packing up your belongings, speeding off, and exploring as many cities and countries as possible really is the right way to live.

Writer and director Chloe Zhao and the always imperious Frances McDormand have rightfully received critical acclaim for their work on the drama, which is released on Hulu on February, 19, and is fully expected to be a frontrunner during awards season.

Nomadland will be particularly resonant for travelers when you consider how excruciating the last 12 months have been. Rather than visiting sun-drenched and exotic places across the length and breadth of the globe, the Coronavirus pandemic has forced people to stay indoors and watch everything that the likes of Netflix, Hulu, and HBO Max have to offer instead.

But while we all obviously want to be exploring new cities and butchering foreign languages, one way of scratching the traveling itch has always been to watch movie characters do it for us.

A perfectly made road trip movie can make you feel as though you’re actually embarking on the adventure and journey with those on-screen. Plus there’s the added bonus that you don’t have to pay for gas, stay in cheap and dirty motels, or get into fistfights with the locals over a simple misunderstanding.

Of course the road trip movie is so popular that plenty of entries to the genre suggest they’re capable of being this transportive and escapist, only to quickly bore and disappoint.

So which road trip movies are actually worth your time then?

Lucky for you, we here at Men’s Health have got viewers covered. So tighten up your helmets, put on your aviators, and start revving up that engine, as we take a look at the 25 best road trip movies ever made.

Easy Rider (1969)

Remembered mostly for the iconic image of Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper riding on their motorbikes as Steppenwolf’s "Born To Be Wild" blasts out, their cross-country expedition is both an illuminating and terrifying look at America.

Almost Famous (2000)

Cameron Crowe’s semi-autobiographical tale of being a teenage music journalist in the mid 1970s is primarily a love letter to rock ’n’ roll, writing, and being young. But Patrick Fugit’s wide-eyed exploration of America as he tours with Stillwater also makes it an engrossing road movie, too.

Y Tu Mama Tambien (2002)

Alfonso Cuaron’s masterpiece didn’t just introduce the world to Gael Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna, it also blends drama, comedy and sex into a highly emotional, smartly constructed, and thought-provoking coming of age examination of Mexico.

Stream It Here

Dumb and Dumber (1994)

Undoubtedly the stupidest movie on this list, Harry and Lloyd’s jaunt from Providence,Rhode Island, to Aspen, Colorado, to return a briefcase is also probably the laugh out loud funniest entry, too.

It Happened One Night (1934)

A much different comedy to Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels’ above effort, It Happened One Night depicts Clark Gable’s cunning newspaper reporter slowly fall in love with Claudette Colbert’s spoiled heiress during their enchanting trip from Florida to New York. Rightfully regarded as one of the greatest movies of all time.

Logan (2017)

Planes, trains, & automobiles (1987).

Everything about Planes, Trains, and Automobiles just works. Not only does writer and director John Hughes expertly throw obstacles in the way of Steve Martin and John Candy as they try to make their way from New York to Chicago, but he leaves us with a heartfelt and beautiful ending, too. However, it’s Martin and Candy’s dynamic that has really allowed it to stand the test of time.

Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)

Unfortunately the blistering trip from Immortan Joe’s Citadel to the mythical “Green Place,” with a permanent stop off in Vallhalla for some, isn’t actually doable for movie fans. But if it was, the legion of die-hard Mad Max: Fury Road aficionados would ride through the roughest sandstorm to prove their love for the rollicking blockbuster, which is regarded by many as the best action movie of all time.

Inside Llewyn Davis (2013)

A deeply sad yet oddly profound and darkly funny look at the life of a folk-musician in Greenwich Village during the early 1960s, Oscar Isaac shot to fame as the titular character, who voyages from New York to Chicago and back again to try and prove his talents.

Sullivan's Travels (1941)

One of the most under-rated movies to emerge from the Golden Age Of Hollywood, Joel McCrea’s rich and successful comedy director makes himself homeless so he can oversee an authentic, socially conscious movie in Preston Sturges’ brilliant and hilarious look at the power of cinema.

Thelma & Louise (1991)

Thelma & Louise just keeps on getting better and better and better with each passing year. Sure its ending is iconic, but the titular duo’s joyride down to Mexico is also full of laughs, heart, and plenty of action, too. In fact, while most moviegoers would say it’s Alien, Gladiator, or Blade Runner, there’s an argument to be made that this is actually Ridley Scott’s greatest movie.

Midnight Run (1988)

The quintessential buddy comedy, Midnight Run revolves around Robert De Niro’s bounty hunter taking Charles Grodin’s mob accountant from New York to Los Angeles. It thrives thanks to the leading pair’s hysterical chemistry, and is elevated because it’s genuinely dark, moving, and thrilling, too.

The Muppet Movie (1979)

If you find yourself really down in the dumps because of the pandemic, then The Muppet Movie will provide the perfect cure. Just the sight of Kermit the Frog navigating his way from Florida to California to start his movie career, and picking up Fozzie Bear, Miss Piggy, and Gonzo et al along the way is a delight for people of all ages.

National Lampoon's Vacation (1983)

National Lampoon’s Vacation might just feature the most impressive comedic team ever assembled. Directed by Harold Ramis, written by John Hughes, and starring Chevy Chase in arguably his most memorable role, it simply revolves around him taking his family on a trip from Chicago to Wally World in California, only to be met by increasingly hilarious setbacks.

The Daytrippers (1996)

Greg Mottola’s debut as a writer and director isn’t as much of a comedy as the likes of Superbad and Adventureland , as it sees Hope Davis traveling from Long Island to New York with her family to confront her husband, who she assumes is cheating. Instead it’s deft, claustrophobic, witty, full of surprises, and features stand out performances from Parker Posey and Liev Schreiber.

O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000)

The second Coen Brothers movie on this list is another one of their most underrated. George Clooney, Tim Blake Nelson, and John Turturro are three convicts on the run across the South during the Depression, and while the acting is flawless, it’s Roger Deakins’ sumptuous cinematography, Joel and Ethan’s breakneck script, and the endless stream of glorious music that makes O Brother, Where Art Thou? really shine.

The Blues Brothers (1980)

One of the most expensive comedies ever produced, thanks to its chaotic production,John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd’s musical siblings might only travel through Illinois, but they still manage to create a ridiculous amount of destruction, all to save their orphanage. Still arguably the finest film based on a Saturday Night Live sketch.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998)

Never has taking a drug-induced trip across the Mojave desert to Las Vegas looked so fun. Not everyone thought that, though, as Terry Gilliam’s adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson’s novel proved to be incredibly divisive upon its release. That didn’t stop its exploration of drugs and Sin City from blossoming into a cult classic with a devoted audience.

The Straight Story (1999)

David Lynch’s most coherent film might also be his most heartwarming, too. Based on the true story of Alvin Straight, who in 1994 rode his lawn mower through Iowa and Wisconsin to see his ill brother, The Straight Story is a wonderfully delicious slice of Americana that celebrates the Midwest and the people that live there.

Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan (2006)

Sacha Baron Cohen’s outing from Kazakhstan to America, and then across the country to try and fall in love with Pamela Anderson, is about as ridiculous as movies can get. It’s also relentlessly funny, and if any film was ever going to genuinely make your side’s split, Borat would be it. Plus, you know, 2020 had a sequel too .

The 20 best road trip movies

Have you been on any memorable road trips? If not, don’t feel too bad. You can always enjoy a road trip in a movie. Of course, not every memorable road trip in film is a good one. Some of them are downright dreadful and may make you glad you haven’t actually hit the open road much yourself. Whether or not the road trip itself is one we’d like to take, these are the best movies about road trips. Stay home and watch one today.

“Road Trip” (2000)

Is “Road Trip” the best movie on this list? No, the Todd Phillips comedy certainly is not. However, it’s a movie literally called “Road Trip.” The film also has a very turn-of-the-millennium cast, including Breckin Meyer, Amy Smart , and Tom Green.

“Midnight Run” (1988)

What is the best road trip film then? We’re quite partial to “Midnight Run,” one of the best ‘80s action comedies. Robert De Niro and Charles Grodin are both fantastic in the film. De Niro plays a bounty hunter who is taking in Grodin’s character, at least if Grodin doesn’t annoy De Niro so much that the latter takes him out before delivering the bail skipper in.

“The Muppet Movie” (1979)

The very first Muppets film is a road movie! While a bunch of Muppets, and celebrities, show up, the thrust of the film is Kermit the Frog taking a trip across the country to get to Los Angeles. There are musical numbers, silly jokes, a frog legs magnate who wants Kermit to be his spokesperson for his restaurants.

“It Happened One Night” (1934)

“It Happened One Night” is one of only three films to win the “big five” Oscars: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Screenplay. The screwball comedy is one of the last big films before the Production Code took effect and features big names like Frank Capra, Clark Gable, and Claudette Colbert. Maybe the most famous scene in the movie involves hitchhiking as well.

“Smokey and the Bandit” (1977)

Here’s a movie all about action on the road. The premise is simple. Burt Reynolds aka “Bandit” and his pal Jerry Reed aka “Snowman,” take on a bet that says they can’t illegally transport 400 cases of Coors from Texarkana to Atlanta within 28 hours. With the law after them, “Smokey and the Bandit” features a bunch of car chases and some big-time stunts.

“Harry and Tonto” (1974)

Art Carney is best known as the wacky best friend on “The Honeymooners,” one of the first hit sitcoms. Did you know he also won an Oscar for Best Actor? It’s true, and he beat out guys like Albert Finney, Dustin Hoffman , Al Pacino, and Jack Nicholson. He did that for the film “Harry and Tonto,” where he plays a man who goes on a cross-country trip after he finds out his apartment building is being demolished. He’s Harry. Tonto is his cat.

“Bonnie and Clyde” (1967)

When we think of “Bonnie and Clyde,” we think of the bank robberies and the violence. Some consider this a pivotal film in the evolution of the Hollywood post-Production Code. However, it’s also kind of a road movie. We spend a lot of time with Bonnie and Clyde as they travel around from town to town until they meet their untimely demise in their car.

“My Own Private Idaho” (1991)

Yes, this movie has a strange name, but it’s actually a somber, elegiac film. Gus Van Sant based the film on a few Shakespeare plays, and cast up-and-coming actors Keanu Reeves and the late River Phoenix in the main roles. The two of them spend the film on a journey of discovery, with plenty of contemplative moments along the way.

“Something Wild” (1986)

We don’t want to spoil “Something Wild,” because the movie abruptly shifts in tone at a certain point. In fact, it’s one of the few films we can think of that goes from being a wacky comedy to serious thriller. The movie also has a fine cast at his disposal, including Jeff Daniels, Melanie Griffith, and a young, relatively-unknown Ray Liotta.

“Logan” (2017)

“Logan” is different from many superhero movies. One, it’s a serious R-rated film with plenty of swearing and violence (but not in a “Deadpool” way). Two, it’s a Western in many ways. Three, it’s also a road movie. Logan, aka Wolverine, and a dying Charles Xavier take a young mutant named Laura on a journey to try and find a purported refuge spot for mutants. There is much killing along the way, but not of the flippant variety.

“The Sugarland Express” (1974)

“The Sugarland Express” is about a husband and wife who take a police officer hostage and take off across the country fleeing authorities. It stars Goldie Hawn , which is notable. That being said, the real noteworthy thing about “The Sugarland Express” is that it is Steven Spielberg’s first full-length theatrical film. You can see where everything began for the legendary director.

“Pee-wee’s Big Adventure” (1985)

Pee-wee Herman’s beloved bicycle is stolen. Naturally, this leads to him having to go off on a trip that takes him all across the country, even to the Alamo (sadly, not to its basement). He dances for bikers. He meets Large Marge. The movie is strange but wonderful. Also, speaking of debuts, this is Tim Burton’s feature-length debut, and still one of his best offerings.

“Beavis and Butt-Head Do America (1996)

Yes, Beavis and Butt-Head are goofy, lowbrow characters. They could seemingly sustain a narrative for the entirety of an episode of TV, so how would they survive a movie? Well, it’s not always successful, but there are charms to seeing these two doofuses on a trip across America. David Letterman was willing to do a cameo, so you know it has some things going for it.

“Dumb and Dumber” (1994)

In some ways, “Dumb and Dumber” is “Beavis and Butt-Head Do America” but live-action and with adult characters. For many, “Dumb and Dumber” is the quintessential road movie comedy. Heck, some consider it one of the funniest movies ever made. This is Jeff Daniels’ second film on this list, but in truth, this was largely a breakout role for Jim Carrey.

“Lost in America” (1985)

Early in his career, Albert Books trafficked in satire, usually successfully. “Lost in America” is definitely a pointed film. Brooks costars as half of a Yuppie couple who quit their job to explore America and “find themselves.” Of course, it doesn’t go well, mostly owing to the naivety and cravenness of these two middle-class Californians.

“Between Two Ferns: The Movie” (2019)

“Between Two Ferns” the internet video series is quite stationary. That is to say, all we ever see is a black room with two chairs and two ferns. It’s a sendup of cheaply-made public access shows, and an excuse for Zack Galifianakis to be a jerk to celebrities. For the Netflix movie based on the comedy shorts, though, Galifianakis and crew take to the road. The film is largely improvised, but the cast is so talented it remains quite funny and sustains a full narrative.

“National Lampoon’s Vacation” (1983)

The “Vacation” series features a few different trips, but the original movie involves a road trip. Specifically, a disastrous road trip to Wally World for the Griswold family. Chevy Chase may no longer be a comedy star, but “Vacation” is a reminder of what he could do at his best.

“Planes, Trains, and Automobiles” (1987)

John Candy is in “Vacation.” He has a much bigger role in “Planes, Trains, and Automobiles.” The John Hughes comedy is one of the few Thanksgiving movies ever made, and we personally credit any success in this film to the dynamic duo of Candy and Steve Martin, who are both talented comedic performers.

“Nebraska” (2013)

Will Forte usually acts in very silly comedies. For “Nebraska,” he had to get a bit more serious. Alexander Payne’s film is a comedy-drama mixture that is both funny and somber in equal measures. Forte plays a man on a road trip with his father, played by Bruce Dern, who is dealing with the effects of aging but remains dynamic and forceful. Dern was nominated for an Oscar, but unlike Art Carney did not win.

“Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” (1998)

This is one of the weirdest road trips we can recall. Considering this was based on a book by Hunter S. Thompson, that makes sense. Johnny Depp and Benicio Del Toro are on a road trip to Las Vegas, and they are packing a ton of drugs for the excursion. When we say these two are on a road trip, we mean it’s a road trip . “Fear and Loathing” is full of bizarre, psychedelic imagery, and definitely does its best to capture the ethos of Thompson’s book.

This Sub-Genre of Road Trip Movie Is More Relevant Than Ever

With Roe v. Wade overturned and an influx of abortion bans, it's seeming like this genre will sadly remain relevant for the foreseeable future.

The abortion road trip is a subgenre that has long existed but sadly, as abortion rights continue to be targeted and rolled back in the United States, has become more relevant than ever. These movies can take the form of a heartwarming comedy or a dark, sobering look into the various obstacles and trauma pregnant people face when trying to exert control over their own bodies. These films typically feature two women, usually friends or family members, forced to travel considerable distances or jump through hoops in order for one of them to get an abortion or emergency contraception. Reflective of reality, the characters in these films are typically impoverished women who struggle to terminate a pregnancy due to lack of legal access, lack of financial means, or both.

RELATED: 'Juno': The Abortion Movie That Isn't About Abortion

The Abortion Road Trip Is Not a New Phenomenon

Though several of the films portraying the often long, difficult road to abortion have been released in the past decade — Unpregnant , Never Rarely Sometimes Always , Plan B , Little Woods , Grandma , and Happening — this subgenre is not a new phenomenon. In 2007, the Romanian film 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days , which follows two college students seeking an illegal abortion in 1987, won the Palme d’Or at that year’s Cannes Film Festival. It later inspired the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to reform their procedures for selecting the nominees for Best Foreign Language Film after it was up for consideration but ultimately not shortlisted for the category. It also went on to inspire the aforementioned American film Never, Rarely, Sometimes, Always.

4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days takes place against the backdrop of Nicolae Ceaușescu’s Romania, a dictator who ruled from 1967 until his execution in 1989, and outlawed abortion and contraception via Decree 770 (with very few, specific exceptions). Prior to Decree 700, Romania had one of the most liberal abortion policies in Europe, but Ceaușescu’s policy, implemented to increase the country’s birth rates, instead increased Romania’s maternal mortality rate to the highest in Europe. This decree had horrific consequences both for those seeking abortions and those who performed them illegally, as anyone involved with unauthorized abortions could face incarceration.

This is the historical context in which we are introduced to protagonists Otilia ( Anamaria Mariana ) and Găbița ( Laura Vasiliu ), as Olitilia tries to scrape together enough money to pay a doctor to perform an unauthorized abortion for Găbița in a hotel room. It's a traumatizing experience for the both of them as they are eventually coerced into having sex with the doctor as an alternate form of payment. The film is a bleak depiction of the tragic conditions so many Romanian women were forced to endure under the rule of a dictator who viewed their bodies as public property.

Audrey Diwan's 2021 film Happening , adapted from French author Annie Ernaux's novel L'Événement, provides a similar historical account of the conditions women in Europe faced before abortion and emergency contraception were legalized. The film takes place before France legalized oral contraception in 1967 and decriminalized abortion via the Veil Act in 1975. It follows college student Anne ( Anamaria Vartolomei ) whose life takes a drastic turn for the worse when she finds out she's pregnant and must seek an illegal abortion, even attempting to induce one herself.

While 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days and Happening remind us of the dangerous conditions faced by women decades ago, they also provide a reflection of the present and look to the future with the overturn of Roe v. Wade last year and states across the country implementing even stricter abortion regulations and bans like Florida's most recent 6 week ban . As the more recent crop of American films show, pregnant people are still subject to similar conditions across the country where abortion is illegal or financially inaccessible to a large percentage of the population.

The Great American Abortion Road Trip

Though it's quite a serious topic, some filmmakers have managed to infuse it with comedy, making for some worthy additions to the road-trip comedy genre. The 2015 comedy Grandma stars Julia Garner as Sage, a teenage girl who, fearing her mother's reaction, turns to her grandmother Elle ( Lily Tomlin ) to help pay for her abortion. But Elle doesn't have the money either, so she takes Sage on a road trip around Los Angeles to collect the $630 she needs for the procedure, visiting old friends and flames along the way.

Unpregnant follows high schoolers Veronica ( Haley Lu Richardson ) and Bailey ( Barbie Ferreira ), former best friends who take a road trip from Missouri (where abortion is forbidden without parental consent), to New Mexico so Veronica can get an abortion. After a number of mishaps, the girls inadvertently end up hitchhiking with a pro-life couple who try to stop Veronica from having the abortion, but with the help of an anti-government survivalist, they're ultimately able to reach the abortion clinic in Albuquerque and get the procedure done.

In Natalie Morales ' directorial debut Plan B , seventeen-year-old best friends Sunny ( Kuhoo Verma ) and Lupe ( Victoria Moroles ) go on an overnight road trip in search of the emergency contraceptive Plan B pill when Sunny has her first sexual encounter the night before. The girls reside South Dakota, one of the states with the strictest abortion laws , so Sunny is unable to buy Plan B without parental consent. Once they finally reach their closest Planned Parenthood hours away, they find it's been shut down, and Sunny is forced to ask her mother to buy her the pill.

While these three films are able to make light of the matter in a sensitive way, Little Woods and Never Rarely Sometimes Always don't shy away the harsh realities that so many face as they seek abortions in the United States. Nia DaCosta 's feature directorial debut, Little Woods , follows sisters Ollie ( Tessa Thompson ) and Deb ( Lily James ) who reunite after the death of their mother when Deb finds out she's pregnant and turns to Ollie for help. Despite trying to turn her life around, Ollie returns to illegally selling and transporting prescription medication across the Canadian border to prevent the foreclosure of their mother's home and help Deb get an abortion in Canada. Deb is already a single mother living in an illegally parked trailer, and when she finds out giving birth without health insurance would cost her at least $8000, she looks for options to terminate the pregnancy. After failing to get an illegal abortion in their home state of North Dakota, Deb finds herself in a dangerous situation as she buys a fake Canadian ID in order to get an abortion once they cross the border.

The critically acclaimed Never Rarely Sometimes Always follows seventeen-year-old Autumn ( Sidney Flanigan ) and her cousin Skylar ( Talia Ryder ) as they travel from Pennsylvania — another state where minors are prohibited from getting an abortion without parental consent — to a Planned Parenthood in New York City so Autumn can get an abortion. Autumn at first tries to self induce a miscarriage, but when this doesn't work, Skylar steals money from their job at their local grocery store to buy bus tickets to New York without their parents' knowledge.

What Do These Abortion Road Trip Movie Have in Common?

Though the films in this subgenre tell a variety of stories, they are all connected by a number of overlapping characteristics. They all feature women who are financially disadvantaged in some way, most often teenage girls or college students who have little money of their own, and are prevented from accessing safe abortions and emergency contraception due to strict government regulations or high cost. They sometimes try to take care of the situation themselves, putting their bodies at risk because safe alternatives seems unattainable. In almost every film mentioned, the protagonists are propositioned for sex — either explicitly or implicitly — in exchange for money, access to abortion/contraception, or resources needed to get the procedure, leading to one or both characters having to compromise their bodily autonomy yet again.

The films in this subgenre may differ tonally, but they are connected in their portrayals of women coming together to each other, forming a stronger bond through their traumatic journey, even if they were estranged or emotionally distant prior to the events of the film. It's a unique experience that only people capable of pregnancy can fully understand, and these films remind us of the importance of solidarity when it comes to supporting others in the fight for bodily autonomy and safe access to abortion and contraception. Though only two of these films feature women of color, the demographic that is most negatively affected by abortion bans in the United States, all feature women whose access to abortion is limited by fraught financial situations, another important factor to consider in the conversation around abortion.

And though the two European films mentioned — 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days and Happening — do not touch on the religious aspect of abortion bans due to cultural differences with the United States, those taking place in the U.S. never fail to include the effect that faith based anti-abortion laws and protests have on those seeking abortions. In Unpregnant , Never Rarely Sometimes Always , Grandma , and Little Woods , when the characters arrive to the abortion clinic, they are met with protestors outside the facility, typically brandishing signs reading "abortion is murder" and similar slogans. In Grandma, it's played for comedic affect, but including these protestors, even very briefly, always serves as a reminder of the guilt added to those are already in emotionally vulnerable states by zealots looking to limit the bodily autonomy of others.

Films that fall into the abortion road trip subgenre can range from graphic and upsetting to lighthearted and whimsical, but they all critique not only oppressive abortion laws but the larger societal conditions they exist in. Unfortunately, these films are unlikely to change the minds of ardent anti-choice viewers, but they can be affirming to those who have gone through similar experiences, and important viewing to those whose minds are still open to change. It's unfortunate that this subgenre exists in the first place, and even more tragic that it has become more relevant than ever.

Christopher Reeves Documentary A Super Man

DC/Dox has unveiled the lineup for its second annual edition, which takes place in Washington, D.C., from June 13-16. The documentary festival will kick things off with “ Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story ,” the Warner Bros. Discovery film that premiered at Sundance earlier this year.

Popular on Variety

In April, Sitney revealed that Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui’s “Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story” was one of four docus that would make up DC/Dox’s Signature Screenings section. The remaining three docus in the program are: Lana Wilson’s “Look Into My Eyes” (DC/Dox Centerpiece film), Dawn Porter’s “Luther: Never Too Much” (DC/Dox Spotlight film), and Sally Aitkin’s “Every Little Thing” (DC/Dox Closing Night film). Each docu premiered at Sundance 2024.

“These four signature films capture important aspects of our human experience: resilience in the face of adversity, the beauty found in small acts of kindness, the power of art and music to unite people in our shared humanity, and the universal desire to find higher meaning in our lives,” said Sitney.

Six feature docus will make their world premieres at DC/Dox: They are: AJ Schnack’s “Majority Rules,” about Alaska’s decision to use ranked-choice voting; Ross Kauffman’s “Wild Wild Space” an exploration of private companies jostling for dominance in space; Catherine Gund’s “Paint Me a Road Out of Here,” about Faith Ringgold’s painting “For the Women’s House”; Bridget Hunnicutt’s “Breaking the West,” about a Russian oligarch’s ambitions in the West; Alexandra Shiva and Lindsey Megrue’s observational portrait of a psychiatric unit for young adults titled “One South: Portrait of a Psyche Ward”; and Asako Gladsjo’s “The Calling, which follows a group of medical students in the Bronx.

DC/Dox will also screen the North American premieres of Peter Middleton’s “Apollo Thirteen: Survival,” which chronicles the almost disastrous NASA mission, and Chad Freidrichs’ “The Cinema Within” about the art and science of film editing. Jeremy Xido’s “The Bones,” an examination of the high-stakes world of dinosaur bone trading, will make its U.S. premiere at the fest. The doc premiered in March at CPH:Dox.

“With this second edition, DC/Dox continues to provide a festival experience that can only be found in the nation’s capital,” says DC/Dox co-founder Jamie Shor. “This festival allows filmmakers the unique opportunity to connect with an audience that can be influencers and amplifiers of their work, as well as appreciators.”

Things To Do

Books | the iron sheik threatened to kill him. years later, a road trip would reunite them., brad balukjian, a writer and academic who'd idolized the wwf wrestling star, writes about reconnecting with the legends of his youth in 'the six pack: on the road to wrestlemania.'.

road trip 2000 similar movies

Brad Balukjian, a gangly, socially awkward elementary schooler, loved the Iron Sheik, a villainous character known to wave an Ayatollah Khomeini flag while screaming “Death to America” at matches. So in 2005, Balukjian was set to become the official biographer of his Iranian idol – whose given name was Hossein Khosrow Ali Vaziri, or “Khos” for short – until the project, in spectacular fashion, melted down. (This wasn’t what’s known in wrestling as kayfabe – the term for pro wrestling’s blending of real/fake culture – either; the breakdown between hero and fan was a real one).

Balukjian went on to get a Ph.D. in entomology and became a science writer and a professor of natural history and sustainability at Merritt College in Oakland, but he never fully gave up on turning his Iron Sheik material into something.

So he did. Coming out of peak Omicron, Balukjian set out on a 12,525-mile journey to meet up with a handful of wrestlers who appeared at MSG that night like “Mr. USA” Tony Atlas , The Masked Superstar , Tito Santana , and the man who would claim the belt from Iron Sheik a month later, Hulk Hogan . The author would even reconnect with the Sheik himself .

Balukjian’s new work “The Six Pack: On the Road to Wrestlemania” is a spiritual sequel to 2020’s surprise hit  “The Wax Pack,” in which he opened a pack of baseball cards from 1986 and went in search of what the players were doing now. For this book, Balukjian spent 62 days on the road seeking out his heroes from the WWF (now known as the WWE). The conversation has been edited for length and clarity.

Q: “The Wax Pack” was such an ingenious way to frame a book that I’m curious if you knew you wanted to tell “The Six Pack” in a similar fashion?

The best answer is, sort of? “The Wax Pack” was rejected 38 times and it took years to get published. People in the industry didn’t get what I was trying to do, which is take readers along on a personal quest, part sports history, part present-day reporting, part memoir, and not just a straightforward biography of baseball players or wrestlers. Once the book got out there and sold pretty well, I knew I had some leverage, but I didn’t want to write a straight sequel where I, say, open a pack of 1991 hockey cards or whatever. Even though it would’ve been fun and an easier book deal to secure, I wanted to push myself creatively but recognized that if I could somehow link the books thematically it could become my personal stamp.

I have a background in science writing, and an inspiration is Mary Roach , who’s created a cottage industry of books with one-word titles, “Stiff,” “Bonk,” “Gulp,” etc. Using the word “Pack” twice as part of the framework was a conscious choice, but “Six Pack” works in the WWF world for: The number of guys I caught up with from that 1983 lineup; the many, many beers they drank; and their ripped ab muscles. I’ve done some interviews with the WWE world where I’ve gotten a little pushback for putting myself in the book – some fans just want the war stories – but I think it’s a much more interesting approach. So the two books definitely have that road trip in common.

The Iron Sheik, born Hossein Khosrow Ali Vaziri, plays a role in Brad Balukjian's book, "The Six Pack: On the Road to Wrestlemania." Here, the wrestler is seen arriving at the ESPY Awards in Los Angeles on July 15, 2009. (Photo credit: Matt Sayles/AP Photo)

Q: “The Six Pack” also grew out of a book project with your WWF hero, The Iron Sheik, which you abandoned some 20 years ago because, as you write, he threatened to murder you?

That is the absolutely true story that serves as the “The Six Pack” prologue. He was my favorite wrestler when I was a young 1980s kid, and in 2005, I took a gamble and left a job as a magazine fact-checker in California, moving to suburban Atlanta to write a biography with him. We set off on this path together but the whole thing went sideways because he was too addled by substance abuse. On one occasion, I drove Khos to his crack dealer, so needless to say, the collaboration didn’t work out as I envisioned.

Q: And then Khos threatened to kill you by dealer’s choice: gun, knife, or broken leg? You went with the “.38 Magnum for my fate,” as it’s the quickest option, but I think a snapped femur would have a higher chance of survival, no?

Fair point, but I wasn’t thinking too clearly at that moment. To be honest, Khos was in his 60s and had the threat lingered and become truly menacing, I would’ve bolted and run away as fast as I could.

Q: The Iron Sheik isn’t the only character in the book with a host of problems. Was it surprising how far down stars like Tony Atlas had spiraled? You write that Atlas was basically living on the street due to severe drug addiction because as you declare in the book, “The Road ate people alive…”

There’s a show and podcast beloved by wrestling fans called the “Dark Side of the Ring,” which details what so many of these guys went through with drugs, sex, violence, steroids, and burning through money with no real health benefits.

What I try to add to the mix in “The Six Pack” is a way of looking at these aging men and how they view their lives now, their vulnerabilities and emotions as they look back. These stories hit on real-life issues we all deal with, fathers and sons come up repeatedly, so it’s as much a reflection on the humanity behind the kayfabe as it is ‘Wild Tales of the WWF.’

Q: As an interviewer, even after all these years, was it hard to portray them, or even just talk to them about their careers, as both human beings and their characters simultaneously? The all-encompassing 24/7 role is its own animal…

Professional wrestling is a totally unique art form and profession. When they sign an autograph, they sign their character name. Actors and musicians don’t do that, they might change their name for professional reasons, but it’s not a character. If you go to a convention today and wait in line to meet Sgt. Slaughter , that’s the name he’s signing, not Bob Remus. These guys inhabited these characters for the majority of their lives.

The whole point of “The Six Pack” is digging into to what extent did they actually become their characters? And once they were done wrestling, could they go back to their real selves? How does that work? So yes, when interviewing them it’s a Jekyll and Hyde dance you’re doing, trying to figure out the line between the man and the alter ego.

Q: You and the Iron Sheik ended on good terms before he died last June , was that the full circle of life piece you needed for “The Six Pack?”

Meeting up with Khos gives the book a driving narrative tension. What’s it going to be like seeing the man who threatened to kill me 17 years later? I knew he’d cleaned up, quit cocaine, and in working on the book, I had filled in all these gaps – like finding the now-94-year-old wrestling coach who welcomed Khos to the U.S. in 1969 – so I knew we had plenty of ground to cover. Over the years, I called him here and there, so there was some contact but I didn’t go see him in person until 2022. We spent a wonderful evening together, dinner with his family, and catching up.

He died less than a year later and the family invited me to attend his services. The Iron Sheik and I had a long history together. It was quite a journey from where it started to where it ended, but it marks a new beginning for me. The experiences I had in writing and reporting these two books has convinced me to leave academia and give full-time writing a go. There are plenty of old-school sports stories to be told. Pro wrestling will certainly be a part of it, the WWF left quite an imprint on my babyface childhood.

By Rohan Verma

In the diverse world of Indian cinema, Malayalam movies have emerged as frontrunners, captivating audiences with their gripping storylines and stellar performances. In the first quarter of 2024, Mollywood delivered blockbusters like Manjummel Boys and Premalu. From action dramas to romantic comedies, each film offers a glimpse into the diverse range of Malayalam cinema.

According to Sacnilk , Mollywood has grossed around $15,27,59,660 in worldwide collections. Among the plethora of Malayalam movies, some of the highest-grossing ones of 2024, which have elevated the collections to new heights, include Aadujeevitham, Aavesham, Premalu, Manjummel Boys, and more.

Manjummel Boys

Manjummel Boys emerges as the undisputed victor in the highest-grossing Malayalam films in 2024. Directed by Chidambaram, this film made its theatrical debut on February 22, 2024, and garnered a massive response from audiences. Manjummel Boys follows the story of a group of friends who go on a trip and get stuck in Guna Cave, also known as Devil’s Kitchen.

For those interested in watching the movie, it will be available to stream on Disney Plus Hotstar starting May 5th.

Aadujeevitham

Prithviraj Sukumaran’s Aadujeevitham secured second spot in the list of the Highest Grossing Malayalam movies of 2024. The film premiered in theaters on March 28, 2024. Based on the novel of the same name, Aadujeevitham explores Najeeb’s real-life story. He found himself trapped in slavery, where he had to herd hundreds of goats in Saudi Arabia. Produced with a budget of $9.6 million, the project was helmed by director Blessy.

According to Sacnilk , Aadujeevitham collected around $9.1 million in India’s Malayalam net collection, bringing its overall worldwide collection to $18.5 million. It also earned the title of the fourth highest-grossing Malayalam film ever.

The latest Malayalam romantic comedy, Premalu, has significantly impacted the box office collection. Directed by Girish A.D., the film features Naseln and Mamitha Baiju in the lead roles. Bhavana Studios produced Premalu with a budget of around $359K. It follows the story of a young man, Sachin, who finds himself between two potential partners for his love life.

With its gripping storyline, Premalu has accumulated around $15.7 million worldwide. In the Indian Malayalam net collection, it earned approximately $7.0 million. For those eager to watch Premalu, it is now streaming on Disney Plus Hotstar.

Fahadh Faasil’s latest action comedy, Aavesham, premiered in theaters on April 11, 2024. Jithu Madhavan directed it, and Anwar Rasheed Entertainments and Fahadh Faasil and Friends produced it. Aavesham revolves around three young bachelors who find themselves in a fight with their seniors. To seek revenge, they seek help from a local Malayali gangster.

While the movie is currently running in theaters, it has already earned the title of the fourth highest-grossing Malayalam film of 2024. Reportedly, it has accumulated around $14 million worldwide and continues to draw audiences. However, whether Aavesham will secure another remarkable spot by the end of its theatrical run remains to be seen.
