History Of Thessaloniki – A Walk Through The Ages (with pictures)

You are currently viewing History Of Thessaloniki – A Walk Through The Ages (with pictures)

Written by Vicky Efthymiadou

Born and bred of the city, it defines me more than anything. A friend and fellow postgraduate student used to say Thessaloniki should be my surname. My one and only true love to this day. The city that never ceases to fascinate me and I rediscover every time I step out of my door. Let me take you on a tour through the history of Thessaloniki. Pictures of this amazing city’s famous landmarks and buildings help tell the tale today.

Be prepared as this article might end up part of a series dedicated to the second largest city of Greece but second to none when it comes to life and briskness.

History of Thessaloniki & Sights

Since its foundation until today, Thessaloniki is at the center of developments; political, historical, religious and cultural. It would be a sterile quote to narrate a long timeline of the city, while the most extraordinary thing happens as one takes a stroll in the city and stumbles upon a whirlwind of centuries of history.

Thessaloniki arch of triumph

The city of Thessaloniki was founded by Kassandros, who named the city after his wife and Alexander the Great’s step-sister, Thessaloniki. Kassandros recognized the suitability of the location, an ideal port great for the new era of commerce. Surrounded by fertile plains (county of Thessaloniki) and not far from the Palace of Pella and Amfipolis. The proof of the success of the selection was that from its foundation until now it has not ceased to be a centre of commerce with multicultural influences.

Roman Era – History of Thessaloniki

During the Roman Empire the city develops and thrives. Gnaeus Egnatius was assigned governor of the Macedonia Province and began the construction of the eponymous Via Egnatia (it started from the east coast of the Adriatic Sea and reached as far as Byzantium, later named Constantinople), which crossed the city of Thessaloniki. Part of the road is today’s road Egnatia and drillings and excavations for the city metro have brought to light remains of the roman road.

Apostle Paul

Apostle Paul preached in Thessaloniki in 50AD first in the city’s Jewish synagogue, followed by gatherings of believers in homes and public places. The Jews of Thessaloniki, dissatisfied with the great response to the sermon of the Apostle Paul, reacted. The Apostle was persecuted from the city, but despite the reactions, many residents of the city embraced the ideas of Christianity and created the first Christian community.

Rotanda former church of Saint George

Gaius Galerius

Gaius Galerius appointed Thessaloniki to administrative capital of the Empire Division commanding himself. He built an imperial palace, Rotonda, a racecourse, a triumphal arch and Roman Agora. When Diocletian Persecution against Christians began, by order of Galerius, Saint Demetrius was arrested and executed with a martyr’s death. Saint Demetrius is the patron saint of Thessaloniki and a majestic Basilica was built on the site of his martyrdom later.

Byzantine Era – History of Thessaloniki

In Byzantine times, Thessaloniki had the title of “Coreigning city”. The appearance of the Slavs on the northern borders of the Empire resulted in many failed attempts from the Slavs to conquer the city. Cyril and Methodius, two brothers born in Thessaloniki joined the Byzantine plan for the Christianization of the Slavic people. The two brothers created the Slavic alphabet, translated texts into Old Slavic and created the first works of Slavic literature.

Byzantine church of Saint Nicolas the Orphan

Highlight of the 1000 years of Byzantine Empire is the Macedonian Dynasty with great emperors such as Basil the 2 nd , Nikeforos Fokas, Ioannis Tsimiskis (main streets of the city are named after them).

While the Empire was in decline, Thessaloniki was conquered by the Franks for a short period to be liberated again and finally to be enslaved after the fall of Constantinople by the Ottomans.

Ottoman Era – History of Thessaloniki

The population of the city was decimated. The Ottomans relocate Muslims to the city as well as Sephardi Jews who had been expelled from Spain (their language being Ladino, a mixture of Old Castillian and Hebrew). Gradually, three districts were created the muslim, the jewish and the Christian (the Greek community).

A smaller community consisting of European citizens (consuls, consulate staff and merchants) who have a significant role in the economic life of the city settle in the area known as Fragkomahalas (the Franks neighborhood). Many Christian churches were converted into mosques, including the church of Saint Demetrius.

Ottoman buildings

During the Ottoman occupation some Turkish baths were built in the city, Bezesteni, a covered closed market, Alatza Imaret, a poorhouse and the infamous prison, the Blood Tower known today as White Tower .

The Greek community, despite the adversities, managed to become more active in the late 19 th  century and thereafter, schools of higher education were opened, the first Greek newspapers began to circulate and the Europeanization of Thessaloniki began. The port and trade in Thessaloniki were flourishing. Τhe first holiday houses designed by Italian and French architects were built at the eastern part of the city owned by rich merchants and prominent residents.

Modern Era – History of Thessaloniki

On October the 26 th  1912 (Saint Demetrius Day) Thessaloniki was liberated by the Greek army. The Ottoman commander signed the surrender protocol and the city passed into Greek territory while the Bulgarian Army was before the city gates claiming the city.

World War I

World War I had begun in 1914, but Greece had maintained neutrality. However, Entente forces had landed troops in Thessaloniki in 1915 to support their Serb allies on the Macedonian Front. In 1916 the National Defense Movement broke out in Thessaloniki, which had formed a Provisional Government dividing Greece, but after the resignation of the King in July 1917 it was reunited and joined the Entente forces. Thessaloniki was soon transformed into a transit center for troops and supplies, filling the city with thousands of French and British soldiers and everything they needed.

The buildings of the old Catholic Monastery Lazaristes served as a military hospital and in close proximity to it became the Allied Cemetery of Zeitelnik, where 20,500 soldiers of Entente allies are buried.

Allied cemetery of Zeitelnik

In 1917 a fire broke out, which razed to the ground most of the city. Thousands of people were homeless and any economic, commercial function or administrative service was completely destroyed along with their archives. Yet, Thessaloniki rose like a phoenix from its own ashes. The Greek government assigned to the French architect Ernest Hébrard, the new road plan. Unfortunately, it was partially implemented, yet it managed to give a breath of a fresh, modern city.

arsistotle square autumn

In the aftermath of WWI, the Greek-Turkish War (1919–1922) resulted in a population exchange between the two countries. 1,221,489 Greek Orthodox from Asia Minor, Eastern Thrace, the Pontic Alps and the Caucasus, and approximately 400,000 Muslims from Greece most of whom were forcibly made refugees and de jure denaturalized from their homelands. The population exchange was preceded by the Genocides (Armenian and Pontians) (1914-1919) committed by the newly founded Turkish state and some refugees had already fled to Greece. The influx of the refugees who settled in Thessaloniki influenced the city’s identity introducing new cultural elements.

World War II

In World War II the city was occupied by the Nazi forces. The Jewish community of the city was confined in a small area and their property was confiscated. Eventually, the entire Jewish population of the city was taken to the Nazi concentration camps. About 46,000 Jews from Thessaloniki were exterminated during that period.

Kassandreia, Kassandra Halkidiki

Kassandra is one of the Prefecture’s oldest municipalities, dating back to the 16th century. It was called after the Macedonian monarch Kassandros and the ancient town of Kassandra.

Following Kassandra’s demise in 1821, Kassandreia’s prominence grows, as it becomes the Metropolis’s administrative hub, as well as the home of the French and Dutch vice-consulates. Kassandreia . A town that stretches from Fourka to Sani. It’s a place with several gorgeous beaches with a green and blue theme. Kassandra’s established communities like Siviri , Elani, and Sani offer hospitality, comfort, and all the services required for tourists.

Its fresh seafood, wild life water resort, environmentally friendly architecture, and contemporary infrastructure seal the region. Kassandreia, Kassandra’s administrative centre. It is the region’s cultural, economic, and administrative hub.

The Municipal Conservatory , the Municipal Philharmonic , the dance company, and finally the Festival of Siviri , which is held every year in the open theatre of Siviri, are the greatest means to make Kassandreia a cultural hub. The town’s commercial centre status is assured by its modern idea and unique market organisation, as well as its multitude of stores that cater to all public needs.

Thanks to the market’s design, the visitor has an amazing experience just by walking around it. A area surrounded by established communities requires an administration that caters to both local and international visitors.

  • 6.1 Beaches

The coast of Kassandra peninsula (Modern Greek: Kασσάνδρα, Ancient Greek: Katharevousa), near the city of Thessaloniki , offers many excellent beaches.

Understand [ edit ]

kassandros tours

Kassandra is known for its wonderful beaches that have made it one of the main tourist areas on the mainland. The proximity to the international airport of Thessaloniki also promoted the tourist development. Many tourists from Eastern European countries come by car in the region, so it can be quite crowded in the high season, even on remote beaches, which used to inaccessible for air tourists. On summer weekends an invasion of bathers from Thessaloniki takes place with the volume of traffic increasing strongly. The best time to visit is the early or late season.

Tourism has already entered Kassandra in the 1970s. Accordingly, on Kassandra there are also the hotels that date back to this time and are also characterized by the style of this time. Therefore there are some architectural aberrations from this time. These hotels have often been refurbished to modern standards but are not very nice to look at.

In the north , the peninsula is very narrow. Sometimes you can see the sea on both sides. On the east coast the villages are more the style that is favored by Greek tourists. On the west coast the tourist settlement Sani dominates, which was completely created for tourist use. It is very nice and clean but you are completely isolated and guests have nothing to do with real Greek life style.

In the middle of the peninsula, the mountainous part begins. Again there is a difference between the east and west coast. At the east coast from Kallithea and south of it are the tourist centers of the peninsula with their beautiful crowded beaches. Mass tourism began here in the 1970s. Many of the hotels are from that time, and have been renovated several times, but you can still tell the age. On the steep west coast, it is much quieter, the strands are not so nice and partly unmanaged.

If you drive all the way to the south you get into the really nice part of Kassandra. Here are the picturesque bays, which are indeed quite busy in the summer, but in the early and late seasons invite to a quite swimming. There are even some beautiful beaches that can be reached by bus. The really beautiful beaches can only be reached by car, and the roads here are quite adventurous.

  • 40.09547 23.31126 14 Sani : The facility was created at the beginning of the 60s on the drawing board, where a completely new very luxurious and beautiful holiday area was created. The tower of Sani is the landmark of the place

Get in [ edit ]

Pefkochori Promenade.jpg

The nearest major airport is Thessaloniki ( SKG  IATA ). By bus it takes about an hour to Kassandra, the further south you want the longer it takes. By car, you can do it in 45 minutes. The highway from Thessaloniki ends near Nea Moudania and then you continue on a fairly well-maintained road to the south. From this central road all villages can be reached.

Get around [ edit ]

Kassandra is very well connected by bus lines. Sometimes there is a page with the departure times which are not very reliable. You sit down at the bus stop and wait until the bus arrives. Be aware that you can not just sit at the bus stop when the bus arrives, you have to get up and wave, otherwise it will not stop. Of course, you have to know how the bus looks like, because there are also many other tourist buses.

Rental cars , scooters and quads are offered in every location. The main roads on Kassandra are quite well developed and signposted. Parking in most villages is a real problem in high season and traffic especially on weekends can be heavy. To make tours on the island weekdays are the better choice.

See [ edit ]

In Kassandra, there are no major attractions that are worth a long drive, but a stop on an island tour.

kassandros tours

  • 40.19659 23.33386 1 Canal of Potidea . The canal separates the Kassandra peninsula from the mainland in the very north of the peninsula. Here Kassandra is so narrow that you can see both sides of the peninsula from the road crossing the canal. On the right you can see the Thermic Gulf, on the left the Toronian Gulf. Both seas are connected by the canal. The history of the channel is not fully understood, a report mentions the channel in the 1st century AD. In 1407, the Byzantine Emperor Manuel II Paleologos had the channel again excavate and at the same time build fortifications on its south side. 1423 the Venetians took over Thessaloniki and the channel of Potidea including Kassandra. Despite the military security measures the channel felt in 1430 with Thessaloniki and the peninsula Kassandra to the Ottoman Empire ( updated Oct 2018 )
  • 39.9359 23.5535 2 Chapel of Panagia Faneromeni . It is a small church painted in blue and white that was built during the Ottoman possession after the appearance of Mary the Virgin. Besides the story that accompanies it, the photogenic church is near the seaside, and the view is amazing. ( updated Oct 2018 )

Archaeological sites : all of the archaeological sites listed below are of secondary importance and poor conservation status. Nevertheless, a visit to an island tour is worthwhile.

  • 40.1968 23.3314 3 Justinian Wall . At the western end of the Cassandra Canal, remnants of the old city walls of Potidea can still be seen. The 6th-century structure was once 1200 meters long and protected the island from intruders. ( updated Oct 2018 )
  • 40.072 23.3353 4 Megali Kypsa . On Simantra beach west of Kassandria are the ruins of an ancient Roman estate. In addition to the foundations and columns of the mansion, parts of a mosaic and the remains of the adjoining, former pottery can be seen. Centuries later, an early Christian church was built over the ruins of the estate. ( updated Oct 2018 )
  • 39.9586 23.3659 5 Poseidon Temple . There is not really much to see, as the area is fenced off. You can see a few remnants of walls and the temple, which is covered for protection. The oldest part of the temple ruins date back to the 11th century BC. dated. Over time, the temple was extended by other additions and belonged to the ancient city of Mende. Four buildings were uncovered: the temple, two buildings on the sides of the temple and a vaulted building in the eastern part. The area around this archaeological site and the extensive beach are very worth seeing. ( updated Oct 2018 )

  • 40.077 23.4487 6 Ammon Zeus Temple . On the beach of Kallithea are the ruins of Ammon Zeus Temple, which dates back to about 400 BC. Was built in the 3rd century BC. The god Ammon Zeus is an association of the Egyptian god Ammon and the Greek godfather Zeus and was especially revered in the Sparta region. A temple in honor of this god in the Kassandra region is a unique feature. The excavations are well signposted and photogenic because of its location on a beautiful beach. It is next to the Ammon Zeus Hotel. Approximately 3 km further south is the ruin of an early Christian church of Solina 'from the 5th century. It is fenced and quite inaccessible. ( updated Oct 2018 )

Museums : the small museums are a destination for rainy days.

  • Folklore Museum in Kassandria . The Folklore Museum in Kassandria houses an extensive collection of traditional costumes as well as an exhibition of historical objects and provides visitors with an insight into the history of this region. ( updated Oct 2018 )
  • Folklore Museum Polychrono . In a renovated stone house behind the central church lies the Folklore Museum of Polychrono. The exhibition provides an interesting insight into the life and customs of local history. ( updated Oct 2018 )
  • Folklore Museum Afitos . The folklore museum in Afytos is divided into two floors. The ground floor houses a library, the upper floor an interesting collection of historical exhibits. ( updated Oct 2018 )

Do [ edit ]

Kassandra offers all the activities one would expect in a well-developed tourist area, such as all kinds of water sports, scuba diving, boat tours, and hiking. In each of the places the offers are displayed on posters along the promenade.

If you are seeking for more active way to spend time one of the best ways to explore area is using quad bike. There are plenty places where you can rent them, prices start at around €40 per day. There are many hidden beaches and it is the easiest way to get to the top of the hills from where you can see magnificent views of Kassandra peninsula.

  • The spa thermal baths of Agia Paraskevi .
  • The summer concerts and theater festival in the amphitheaters of Nea Moudania and Siviri and the jazz festival of Sani .
  • Feast of Agios Mamas: The most well-known feast in Halkidiki is undoubtedly the Feast of Agios Mamas. Every first week of September legions flock to the village of Agios Mamas to participate in the event, which is of commercial and folkloric interest. It is estimated that over 1,000 exhibitors and 200,000 visitors come to Agios Mamas every September.

Beaches [ edit ]

kassandros tours

There is a good variety of beaches on Kassandra peninsula. If you are looking for something different there are few remote beaches which are usually not so overcrowded. Out of season you might find even a place to enjoy nudism . The easiest way to get to them is using a quad bike.

Buy [ edit ]

A big super market (Lidl) is at the main road at Avytos. Little super markets are in every village, as well as bakeries, pharmacies and other shops for the daily needs. At the villages on the east side from Kallithea down to Pefkohori you find the largest selection of shops selling touristic articles and cloth.

Eat [ edit ]

In every village you find Greek restaurants, pizza, gyros and other fast food, bakeries and patisseries. The places have adapted to the guest from all countries and you can get e.g. British breakfast, continental or Greek with Bougasta and coffee in all variations. Popular for breakfast is the Greek specialty Bougatsa , buns of puff pastry stuffed with pudding (Bugatsa me Crema) or feta cheese (Bugatsa me Tiri).

Drink [ edit ]

Known for its nightlife is Kallithea - not only known, almost infamous. In the south of the city there are numerous nightlife facilities, including the stigma disco. There are even customers who come from Thessaloniki just to drink and dance there.

Sleep [ edit ]

kassandros tours

There is an vast number of accommodations listed on the popular internet booking portals with prices and reviews. Lately building activity has increased again and new hotel complexes are emerging, but mostly in unfavourable locations. Therefore, it is important to look at the location of the accommodation on Google Earth before booking to avoid disappointment. Many accommodations are so far away from the nearest town that you can not get to a beach without a vehicle or enjoy the nightlife. It should also be noted that on Kassandra only a few places are flat and so the way to the beach is often difficult without a vehicle.

Customer

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Moscow Tours centering on Russian History

Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

What is the best time to visit moscow.

Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide

How many days are enough in Moscow?

If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you. Cassander: Ruthless Macedon King in the Shadow of Alexander the Great

  • Read Later

Cassander was a King of Macedon who lived during the 4 th century BC. He was a son of Antipater, one of Alexander the Great’s generals. During Alexander’s campaign against the Achaemenids in the East, Cassander most likely remained in Europe, since his father was serving as regent in Macedon. Following his father’s death, Cassander became one of the Diadochi, and fought for control of Alexander’s fragmented empire. Cassander was politically ruthless, and was successful in holding on to his territories. Unfortunately for Cassander, he was unable to create a dynasty. Shortly after his death, Cassander’s house, the Antipatrids, lost control of Macedon to Demetrius I Poliorcetes, a member of the Antigonid dynasty.

The Path to Becoming King Cassander of Macedon

Cassander was born around 358 BC, and was the son of Antipater, a Macedonian general who had served under Perdiccas III and Philip II, Alexander the Great ’s predecessors. At the time of Philip’s assassination in 336 BC, Antipater had become one of the most important generals in Macedon. Along with Parmenion, another of Philip’s trusted generals, Antipater ensured that Alexander would succeed his father as King of Macedon. Two years later, Alexander began his campaign against the Achaemenids, and left for the East. Antipater was given the title strategos (general) of Europe, and left in charge of Macedon.

Whilst Alexander was away , Antipater was supposed to defend the kingdom’s northern frontier against hostile tribes, and to make sure that the Greek states remained loyal to Macedon. With regards to the latter, Antipater supported oligarchic governments, which made him unpopular. On the other hand, he was also working with the League of Corinth (known also as the Hellenic League), a confederation of Greek states that was created by Philip. Although Antipater was not with Alexander in the east, he contributed to his campaign as well. In 334/3 BC, for instance, he sent reinforcements to Gordium, where Alexander was spending the winter.

  • The Time When Alexander the Great was ‘Defeated’

In the following summer, the Achaemenids sent a naval force to Thrace and Macedon, with the aim of bringing the war to Europe. This expedition was led by Memnon of Rhodes and Pharnabazus. This was a serious threat to Alexander’s campaign, and Antipater had to prepare for the defence of Europe. Fortunately for Antipater and Alexander, Memnon died at the Siege of Mytilene. Memnon’s death, along with Alexander’s victory at the Battle of Issus in the same year, resulted in the dispersal of the remaining Achaemenid fleet. Had Memnon not lost his life at Mytilene, and brought the fleet to Europe, the course of history might have gone in quite a different direction.

His Father’s Son: Setting the Scene for Cassander’s Rise to Power

Antipater had to deal with yet another problem in 331 BC. In that year, the Spartans , under Agis III, revolted against the Macedonians. He had received large sums of money from Pharnabazus, built a large army, and formed an anti-Macedonian coalition. To counter this threat, Alexander sent large amounts of money back to Macedon to finance a war against the Spartans.

At that time, Antipater was dealing with a Thracian uprising. When the Spartans revolted, however, Antipater broke off the campaign in Thrace, and built a new army. The Macedonian army, which was twice the size of Agis’, defeated the Spartans at the Battle of Megalopolis. Plutarch, criticising Alexander’s reluctance to return to aid Antipater in the war with Agis, wrote that the king had mocked the war in Greece as “a battle of mice there in Arcadia.”

In spite of all that he had done, Antipater would soon lose favour with Alexander. This was caused by the conflict between the general and Olympias, Alexander’s mother. The latter began sending letters to her son to complain about Antipater’s misbehaviour. Initially, Alexander ignored these complaints, but eventually lost his temper. Therefore, in 324 BC, when the king returned to Babylon from India, he ordered Antipater to come to the East. Another general, Craterus, was sent with 11,500 veterans to replace him as strategos of Europe.

Antipater, however, did not obey Alexander’s summons. Instead, he sent his son, Cassander, to Babylon on a diplomatic mission. This may have been an attempt by Antipater to persuade Alexander to keep him in his position. Nevertheless, it was interpreted by the king as a confirmation of his mother’s complaints, which doomed the mission, and caused Antipater and his family to fall from grace.

The era of Alexander the Great, famed as a legendary military commander who forged one of the largest empires in history, was filled with conquest and bloodshed. During his time away conquering the world, Alexander was criticised by Plutarch (on the left) for his reluctance to return to fight the wars taking place in Greece. (Left: Public domain . Right: Public domain )

Bloodbath After the Death of Alexander the Great

In 323 BC, Alexander suddenly died in Babylon. Due to the bad blood between Alexander and Antipater, Cassander has been accused of being sent by his father to poison the king. In any event, Alexander’s death meant that Antipater’s replacement by Craterus as strategos of Europe did not take place. Alexander’s death was also seized by the Greeks as an opportunity to rebel against Macedonian rule. Led by the Athenians and Aetolians, the Greeks fought against Antipater in the Lamian War. Despite initial successes against the Macedonians, the Greeks lost the war in the end, following their decisive defeat at the Battle of Crannon in 322 BC.

The most severe consequence of Alexander’s death, however, was the fragmentation of his empire. As soon as Alexander was dead, his empire broke up, and the Diadochi , or “successors,” began to wage war on each other for supremacy. During the First War of the Diadochi, Antipater, Antigonus, and Craterus revolted against Perdiccas, who ruled as regent, since the new king, Philip III Arrhidaeus, was mentally disabled. Perdiccas was killed by his own officers during his invasion of Egypt in 321 BC, after which Antipater was appointed as the new regent.

Antipater died in 319 BC of old age. Instead of appointing Cassander as his successor, however, Antipater handed over the regency to an old officer, Polyperchon. Apparently, Antipater felt that Cassander was too young to serve as regent. Consequently, the Second War of the Diadochi broke out in 318 BC. During this war, Cassander allied himself with Antigonus and Ptolemy , the ruler of Egypt against the regent. Polyperchon was defeated in 317 BC, and Cassander was appointed as the new regent. Polyperchon, however, managed to escape to Epirus, along with Roxane, Alexander’s widow, and her son, the infant Alexander. There, the former regent formed an alliance with the King of Epirus, Aeacides, and Olympias. Since Alexander was the legitimate son of Alexander the Great , Polyperchon and his allies planned to use the infant to regain power.

As Cassander was campaigning in Greece, Polyperchon was met by Philip’s army. The latter, however, defected, and Philip was executed in 317 BC. In spite of this initial success, the invasion was ultimately a failure. Cassander besieged Olympias at Pydna, and promised to spare her life if she surrendered. Polyperchon and Aeacides both tried to aid Olympias, but were unsuccessful. Eventually, Olympias surrendered to Cassander, but the latter reneged on his promise, and had her executed in 316 BC.

For the time being, Roxane and her son were spared, and imprisoned in Amphipolis. In 310/09 BC, however, both mother and child were executed by Cassander. Around the same time, Polyperchon began to throw his support behind Heracles, who was supposed to be an illegitimate son of Alexander the Great. Instead of going to war with Polyperchon, however, Cassander negotiated with him, and persuaded him to murder Heracles.

Ruthless Elimination of the Family of Alexander the Great

The deaths of Philip, Olympias , Roxane, Alexander, and Heracles meant that the Macedonian royal house was almost destroyed. Apart from Philip, the rest of these individuals were victims of Cassander. Apart from his political ruthlessness, Cassander may have harboured a personal grudge against Alexander’s family. This is supported by the fact that he oversaw the rebuilding of Thebes , which had been razed to the ground by Alexander as punishment for rebelling against his rule. In any event, the only surviving member was Alexander the Great’s half-sister, Thessalonica, who was married to Cassander. Therefore, he was now the only person who could claim a connection to the royal family. In fact, in 305 BC, Cassander proclaimed himself King of Macedon.

Nevertheless, Cassander’s fellow Diadochi were still powerful enough to constitute a threat to his rule. This was the case, for instance, with Antigonus. During the Second War of the Diadochi, Cassander and Antigonus had been allies. By the time of the Third War, however, the two were on opposite sides. This war began in 315 BC, and ended in 312 BC when peace treaties were signed between Antigonus and his enemies. In 307 BC, the peace treaties were broken, and the Fourth War of the Diadochi broke out. Antigonus had initially intended to incite a rebellion by sending Heracles to Polyperchon.

This plot came to naught when Heracles was killed by Polyperchon instead. Therefore, in 307 BC, Antigonus sent his son, Demetrius Poliorcetes, to seize Greece from Cassander. Demetrius gained the support of the Greeks by “liberating” them from Macedonian rule. He organised the Greek city states into a Greek League, which was aimed at opposing Cassander. By 302 BC, Cassander had lost all his territory south of Thessaly, and was willing to sue for peace.

The Antigonids, however, were confident that they would be able to finish off Cassander easily, due to all the victories they had won so far. Therefore, they demanded his unconditional surrender. Cassander, however, refused to consider this option, resulting in the break down of negotiations. As the war between Cassander and the Antigonids resumed, the latter sought help from his allies – Ptolemy, Lysimachus, the ruler of Thrace, and Seleucus I Nicator, the ruler of Babylonia.

The three generals were now in a stronger position than they had been at the commencement of the Fourth War. Therefore, they agreed to attack Antigonus. This was also partly due to the fact that the Antigonids were perceived by them as a mutual threat. Consequently, Demetrius was not able to continue the war against Cassander in Thessaly, and made a peace agreement with him. After this, he returned to the east to deal with the new threat. The first attack on the Antigonids came from Lysimachus, who invaded Turkey. Despite his making peace with the Antigonids, Cassander sent some troops to aid Lysimachus’ invasion of Turkey.

  • The Influential Women that Surrounded and Aided Alexander the Great
  • The Romance of Alexander the Great: Are the Legends Really True?

Although Lysimachus’ made a bold move, his army was much weaker than that of the Antigonids. Therefore, he tried to, and succeeded in, postpone a large-scale battle, in the hopes that reinforcements would arrive. Ptolemy, who had invaded Syria, returned to Egypt, when he received a false report of the Antigonids’ victory. Whilst Antigonus and Demetrius were preparing to finish off Lysimachus, and to invade Europe once again, the army of Seleucus arrived. Up till that point of time, it looked as though Antigonus would have succeeded in reuniting Alexander’s empire. Ultimately, however, this was not meant to be, as Antigonus was defeated and killed at the Battle of Ipsus in 301 BC by the forces of Lysimachus, Seleucus, and Cassander.

The Short-Lived Reign of King Cassander of Macedon

Following the defeat of Antigonus, his kingdom was divided between Lysimachus and Seleucus. Cassander, on the other hand, was once again the undisputed ruler of Macedon. Nevertheless, he did not have long to enjoy his gains, as his time was running out. The few years after the Battle of Ipsus were relatively peaceful, but Cassander died in 298 BC of dropsy. Cassander was first succeeded by one of his sons, Philip IV, who died a year later. He was succeeded by two of his younger brothers, Antipater II and Alexander V, who ruled Macedon together until 294 BC. The two kings, however, proved to be weaklings, and eventually war broke out again amongst the Diadochi. The conflict this time centred around the control of Macedon.

In 294 BC, Macedon fell into the hands of Demetrius, the son of Antigonus. Alexander had sought his help to oust his brother. After overthrowing Antipater, however, Demetrius killed Alexander, and proclaimed himself King of Macedon. Thus, the Antipatrid dynasty, which was established by Cassander, lost control of Macedon. Unlike a number of the other Diadochi, such as Seleucus, Ptolemy, and Antigonus, Cassander failed to create a dynasty that would last long after his death. It is perhaps due to this failure that the significance of the Antipatrids in the long-term history of the Hellenistic Age is nowhere near that of the Seleucids or Ptolemies.

Hello, I am writing to ask you to correct these two imprecisions. Firstly, Macedons were Greeks so you can say Athenians, Spartans revolted against them but not Greeks revolted against them (as there was no greek state at the time) and secondly you say that Lysimachus invaded Turkey. There was no turkish state at the time being, Turks came 1000 years later in the area. You can either say the area that modern Turkey occupies or Asia Minor. Thank you
