Theater Review: FUNNY GIRL (National Tour)

Post image for Theater Review: FUNNY GIRL (National Tour)

KATERINA MCCRIMMON IS A BRIGHT NEW FUNNY GIRL  BUT THE TOUR IS LIKE BUS-AND-TRUCK

Funny Girl is a captivating musical that tells the story of Fanny Brice, a renowned comedienne and entertainer during the early 1900s. This production delves into her journey to fame, her tumultuous relationship with gambler Nick Arnstein, and her remarkable resilience in the face of personal and professional challenges. With its iconic score by Jule Styne  (music) and  Bob Merrill  (lyrics), including the unforgettable songs “People” and “Don’t Rain on My Parade,” Funny Girl has become a beloved classic.

will funny girl go on tour

In the original Broadway production of 1964, Barbra Streisand took on the role of Fanny Brice, catapulting her to stardom and paving the way for her lead role in the hit movie adaptation. More recently, the Broadway revival saw Lea Michele step into the spotlight, showcasing the vital role of extraordinary star power in overshadowing any narrative flaws.

will funny girl go on tour

Katerina McCrimmon , the latest actress to tackle the complex emotional and musical landscape of Funny Girl, delivers a mesmerizing performance as Fanny Brice. Her powerful voice commands the stage, particularly in her rendition of the spirited anthem “I’m the Greatest Star.” McCrimmon’s interpretation of “Don’t Rain on My Parade” ignites the same fervent energy that once had Broadway audiences on the edge of their seats, highlighting the weight of the expectations set by Streisand and Michele. However, it is worth noting that McCrimmon’s portrayal leans heavily on the established shtick of Streisand’s iconic performance, rather than bringing a fresh interpretation to the role.

will funny girl go on tour

While McCrimmon shines in her role, some of the production’s creative choices under director Michael Mayer  raise eyebrows. The decision for designer David Zinn to use wrinkly scrims instead of the Broadway revival’s set pieces is questionable, as is Ellenore Scott ‘s uninspiring choreography performed by a hardworking ensemble cast that doesn’t quite match the star’s vocal pyrotechnics. These elements — combined with Isobel Lennart ‘s problematic second act book that hasn’t been improved by Harvey Fierstein ‘s rewrites — contribute to a production that falls short of expectations.

will funny girl go on tour

The supporting performances are a mixed bag. Stephen Mark Lukas , portraying Nick Arnstein, impresses with his fantastic singing voice reminiscent of a 1950s crooner and his Greek god physique. However, Lukas fails to fully delve into the depths of his character, hindered by the limitations of the script. Pop singer-songwriter Melissa Manchester , in the role of Fanny’s mother, portrays the stereotypical Jewish mother with perfection and delivers a beautiful duet with Fanny in Act 2. Eileen T’Kaye , an experienced stage veteran, brings the yenta neighbor Mrs. Strokash to life with a wonderfully three-dimensional performance. Iziah Montaque Harris as sidekick Eddie Ryan, who gets friend zoned, doesn’t get many lines but gets to show off his wonderful tap-dancing skills (tap choreography by  Ayodele Casel assisted by Dre Torres ).

will funny girl go on tour

The spot-on 17-piece orchestra, led by conductor Elaine Davidson , successfully captures the classic Broadway sound, despite Brian Ronan and  Cody Spencer ‘s muddy and overamplified sound design (orchestrations by Chris Walker ; dance, vocal, and incidental music arrangements by Alan Williams ; and additional arrangements by David Dabbon  and  Carmel Dean ).

will funny girl go on tour

While the production and the revised book may have their flaws, it is the exceptional voice of Katerina McCrimmon and the wonderful golden-age score that make this a production worth seeing. Funny Girl remains a musical that captivates with the compelling story of Fanny Brice’s rise to fame and her resilience in the face of adversity.

Is there any Broadway show that carries as much baggage for its leading lady as Funny Girl?

It took over 50 years for a revival to get to New York, in part because the role of Fanny Brice is so synonymous with the woman it was written for and built around — the singular Barbra Streisand . In 2022, it finally returned to Broadway and stuttered with Beanie Feldstein as its leading lady until a messy turn of events led to Lea Michele swooping in to save box office returns.

But I’m happy to report that the touring revival of that production is an opportunity to leave all that offstage drama squarely in the past, and say “hello, gorgeous” to a riveting musical with a showstopping leading lady.

Matthew Murphy

Funny Girl tells the story of Fanny Brice (Katerina McCrimmon), the legendary performer and comic who rose to fame at the turn-of-the-century as a star in the Ziegfeld Follies. It follows Fanny from her early days, dreaming of her big break, to her stardom, but it is constructed around her romance with gambler Nick Arnstein (Stephen Mark Lukas).

The show lives and dies by the actress at its center, and filling the shoes of Barbra Streisand is no small order. Lucky for us, Katerina McCrimmon might just be the next greatest star. Fanny requires her own brand of triple threat — a singer who can belt like nobody’s business, but who is equally adept as a comic and dramatic actress. McCrimmon not only fits the bill, she exceeds it. Her Fanny is a brash dreamer when we first meet her, mugging for her audiences and using her sense of humor to cover her own insecurities.

We watch her mature in real time, as she meets and falls in love with Nick, a guy who dazzles with his ruffled shirt but has heartbreak written all over him. McCrimmon plays her love scenes with a dizzying blend of horny chutzpah and genuine romantic feeling. She brings the audience in on Fanny’s wonderment at Nick’s attentions, then turns our laughs to a swoon. Her ability to ping between those two extremes is executed as nimbly as one of Fanny’s pals, Eddie Ryan’s (Izaiah Montaque Harris) tap routines.

On stage, Fanny is a powerhouse, but in her personal life, she’s a hothouse flower who blooms under Nick’s attention — and McCrimmon blends these two aspects of Fanny’s public and private life with grace. She’s equally adept at making us laugh and cry.

But her true power is in her once-in-a-generation voice. The vocal potency of McCrimmon’s belt whips the audience into a downright frenzy. When she opens her broad mouth on classics like “People” and “Don’t Rain on My Parade," a tidal wave of sound emerges to drown the audience with its aural richness and force. But the real magic of her voice isn’t merely that it’s arresting or dynamic, it’s the ways in which she threads the emotion of the material through her astounding instrument to pack a wallop that will leave a mark for days.

It must be said that Funny Girl is still not a perfect show by any stretch of the imagination. Despite being a charming rogue, Nick Arnstein is a dull character, and it's a role that requires the sheer magnetism of someone like the film’s Omar Sharif to make Nick’s appeal evident. Lukas makes an admirable effort, and he’s easy on the eyes, but there’s just not much there to work with. At least he has an easy chemistry with McCrimmon. But if you cut both of Nick’s songs from Act II, it would not matter.

Indeed, the musical’s Achilles heel is its second act. Harvey Fierstein has given revising Isobel Lennart’s book the old college try, but there’s only so much to salvage in the muddled back-half of the show. Thankfully, the finale still lands thanks to McCrimmon's one-two punch of closing musical numbers, but most of the rest of it is forgettable — and it’s a problem that has plagued Funny Girl since it first opened. It plays better on screen where it can zip by in a cinematic third act, rather than having to sustain the weight of the second half of a stage musical.

The show in its totality is a love letter to the big, old-fashioned Broadway musical. David Zinn’s set design, all framed with a flashy vaudeville-esque proscenium arch, is a grand playing field, even if the staging does push the action into strangely tight spaces and leaves too much empty space. Susan Hilferty’s costumes are that of Broadway dreams, as glitzy and eye-catching as the Follies were at the height of their glory.

Melissa Manchester is a stand-out as Mrs. Brice, Fanny’s mother, and she wisely avoids the pitfall of making a caricature of the “Jewish mother” while still finding plenty of opportunities for wise-cracking. The ensemble provides a dazzling backdrop to the action.

But much of that is tertiary when the show so fully belongs to its titular heroine — and what a gift it is to have an actress of McCrimmon’s talents in the role. It’s easy to forget and forgive the musical’s faults when McCrimmon commands the stage so completely. In her hands, its story of one woman’s resilience and heartbreak is devastating and inspiring all at once.

Funny Girl has always charmed me, but it has never deeply moved me. Until now. McCrimmon made me weep to the point that I was still furiously swiping away tears for several minutes after the curtain call. People who get to see McCrimmon’s star-making performance, now, they are the luckiest people in the world. Grade: A-

Theatre Review: National Tour of ‘Funny Girl’ playing Jackson Hall now thru January 7 as TPAC says “Hello Gorgeous” to second half of their 23/24 Broadway Season

January 4, 2024 by Jonathan

Telling the highly fictionalized story of vaudeville queen Fanny Brice , the National Tour of recent Broadway revival musical Funny Girl opened the Nashville tour stop Tuesday night at Tennessee Performing Art Center ’s Jackson Hall, not only kicking off the new year, but also the second half of TPAC ’s 23/24 HCA/TriStar Broadway at TPAC season.

While there’s definitely a percentage of the audience who are no-doubt devotees of the original 1964 Broadway debut of Funny Girl , it’s subsequent 1968 film and Barbara Streisand , who starred in both, it’s been more than half a century since Streisand laid claim to Fanny Brice. There’s likely just as many who are experiencing this show for the very first time, thanks to 2022’s Broadway revival that features a reworking by Harvey Fierstein of Isobel Lennart ’s original book of the musical. I count myself among the latter. At the risk of having certain ‘memberships’ revoked, I’m just gonna admit it from the get…I’ve never been the biggest Streisand fan. There. I said it. Heck, I wasn’t even 100% sure I’d ever seen the film adaptation of Funny Girl and I’d certainly never seen Funny Girl on stage. Being a fan of Brice’s era of vaudeville, in particular Ziegfeld and his follies—mostly because of my obsession with Lucille Ball and the comedic similarities between Ball and Brice—I have fallen down more than one internet rabbit hole searching out the few rare clips of Brice, so I was familiar with her story and   I knew the songs from Funny Girl . I mean how can you be a theatre nerd and not know the music of Jule Styne and lyrics of Bob Merrill featured in one of the most beloved musicals of all time, right? Here’s the thing though. None of that mattered once the familiar notes of the Overture began to swell from the orchestra pit as conducted by Elaine Davidson . With each note, my anticipation grew and I somehow instinctively knew I was in for a grand night of musical theatre.

It’s not just McCrimmon’s talents as a singer that reels you in, as she equally adept showcasing the funny and the girl. When scenes call for McCrimmon to honor Brice’s physicality as a comedic entertainer, her facial expressions and body language rival those of greats of the craft like Ball and Carol Burnett. When the plot goes deeper, McCrimmon steps it up and evokes emotion, not only in her performance, but in the audience reaction. Case in point, at the end of Act 1, when McCrimmon exquisitely belts out the show-stopping Don’t Rain on My Parade , I was frankly surprised the entire audience didn’t bound to their feet for a pre-intermission Standing O.

While I would be satisfied to sit in a theatre and just witness McCrimmon in a solo performance and be completely satisfied, of course she isn’t alone. Guess what? The entire company is quite brilliant. While the real Fanny Brice was thrice married (I told you I’ve been down my share of Fanny Brice rabbit holes) Funny Girl takes place after husband number one and focuses on Brice’s life and tumultuous relationship and ultimate marriage to husband number two, Nicky Arnstein, played handsomely by Stephen Mark Lukas . I say handsomely because…have you seen his social media? Thanks largely to the way Funny Girl is written, and the ‘character’ of Nicky, in particular, we are to believe that Arnstein was matinee-idol good-looking, giving dual meaning to the infamous line, “Hello, Gorgeous”. In reality, Arnstein was tall, lanky and not what you’d call traditionally handsome. But back to Lukas and his matinee looks. Like his leading lady, he’s also go talent to back it up. Under the show’s director, Michael Mayer ’s watchful eye, I thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of Lukas’ portrayal of Arnstein. Not only does he look like an Old Hollywood movie star, he even sounds like one. His vocal delivery, in speaking and in song, sound as though you’re hearing him through a megaphone, with a deep, pure and enchanting vibrato.

While the entire ensemble is simply marvelous, other stand-out performances come courtesy a trio playing slightly older characters: Mrs. Brice, Mrs. Strakosh and Mrs. Meeker, played respectively by Barbara Tirrell , Eileen T’Kaye and Christine Bunuan . Tirrell , (who’s stepped into the role of Mrs. Brice while original tour cast member Melissa Manchester recuperates from recent surgery) is the perfect mensch of a mom to McCrimmon’s Fanny. She gets her comedic time to shine in scenes with T’Kaye ’s Mrs. Strakosh and Bunuan ’s Mrs. Meeker as three old-neighborhood friends who spend their time playing cards, gossiping and bragging about their children’s accomplishments. In their memorable stage-time, T’Kaye and Bunuan charm the audience with their relatable portrayals of ladies everyone grew up knowing. The trio get their own musical moment early on with the mother-knows-best, albeit antiquated tune, If A Girl Isn’t Pretty .

Walter Coopage as Florenz Ziegfeld and David Foley, Jr. as Tom Keeney, two men instrumental in Fanny’s stage success each show different sides of men in power, Foley’s Kenney presented as a bit hard-nosed and doubting Fanny’s appeal, while Coopage’s Ziegfeld is seen as the nurturing father figure Fanny seemed to be missing. More potentially useless/useful rabbit hole info…Fanny’s father was a good provider, they didn’t live on seemingly downtrodden Henry Street as one tune suggests, but he was a bit of a drunk and her mother ran the family saloon businesses. What’s more…the notoriously hilarious Follies scene in which Fanny’s bride apparently got the marriage and family order confused…never happened. As I previously admitted being a Lucille Ball fan, something tells me that sequence was created more for laughs a la the I Love Lucy ‘showgirl’ sequence, than based in reality, but I digress.

In addition to the showgirl bridal number, the ensemble proves their mettle as they tap their way to thunderous applause, with another comedic turn by McCrimmon in yet another tap number, the all-in Rat-Tat-Tat-Tat midway through Act 2. Who are You Now and You’re a Funny Girl see Lukas’s Nicky in a more mature light than the devil-may-care flamboyant gambler he’s playing earlier on, and his voice is up to the challenge.

McCrimmon also gets the chance to show her character’s maturity in the show’s closing number, The Music That Makes Me Dance, during which we get another chance to witness McCrimmon’s vocal goddessness. That lasting final note! Wow…just wow!

Sorry to end my review with a bit of a Spoiler Alert, but during the curtain call, the whole company breaks out into one last chorus of People, and as they gesture towards themselves and then the audience during the lyrics “People who need people are the luckiest people in the world” , they reveal an all new meaning to those words…as performers, they need the audience, and therefore feel lucky to have us there. Guess what, Funny Girl ? We, the audience are the lucky ones.

Review: ‘funny girl’ revival exceeds immense hype at the ahmanson.

' src=

The national tour of the highly acclaimed and commercially successful Funny Girl 2022 Broadway revival has intrepidly tap danced into Los Angeles’ Ahmanson Theatre, and, with a protagonist who epitomizes the quintessential underdog arc, has categorically won over the hearts of a charmed audience. To say that the towering expectations for this tour have been exceeded would be an understatement, in large part due to relative newcomer Katerina McCrimmon who gives an all-time performance as Fanny Brice.

In a musical-theatre world where revivals are plentiful, Funny Girl is seeing its very first Broadway retuning (by Harvey Fierstein) since debuting in 1964 when idol Barbra Streisand was the sharp-witted and affable Fanny, a real-life comic and belter of the mainstage, which the musical is partly based on. Of course, Fanny’s nattily dressed beau and gambling businessman, Nick Arnstein, is also spotlighted semi-autobiographically. Notions of love, career, sacrifice, family, and marriage troubles are weaved together in a story (conveyed as an extended flashback) that ingratiates with candor, comedy, and a commitment to Brice’s indefatigable spirit. The cast expertly realizes the vision of director Michael Mayer whose deft touches are matched by the enthusiastic choreography of Ellenore Scott — including tap routines by Ayodele Casel — which accentuate Funny Girl ’s strongest features.

Before retracing the protagonist’s journey as a leading star and girlfriend/wife to Nick — and the drama associated with their relationship — the show begins momentarily in the present when Katerina McCrimmon’s Fanny, now the headliner of the famed Ziegfeld Follies, pensively wonders backstage if her estranged husband Nick, depicted by Stephen Mark Lukas, will arrive.

Embodying the era of WWI and the 1920s as seamlessly as she does, McCrimmon is so undeniably personable as a metaphorical “bagel on a plate full of onion rolls” that the Ahmanson crowd can’t help but root for her Fanny, of a humbly Jewish New York origin, who is initially overlooked for not being conventional. Through McCrimmon’s otherworldly actualization, there is more than just a mere acknowledgement of what is seen; there is a full surrender and admission that she is as equally hysterical (e.g., the gut-busting “His Love Makes Me Beautiful”) and earnest (e.g., the softly sung “Who Are You Now?”) as the existent vaudeville luminary was.

There is, moreover, the realization that McCrimmon is as vocally skilled as Streisand’s Fanny — as potentially blasphemous as it is to say. The Cuban-American, Miami native does it uniquely, too, as she meets the incredible demands of the title character while simultaneously making the portrayal her own. That is, whereas Streisand’s voice is more forward and sharp, McCrimmon adds more mass to her vocals while never compromising her clarity; in fact, as powerful as the mid-20-year-old sensation sounds, it’s almost like her voice paradoxically flutters through the air like a feather. “I’m the Greatest Star” is the first indication of McCrimmon’s mind-blowing exploits, and, when it’s time for “People,” and the Act I-ender “Don’t Rain on My Parade,” attendees are moved by a superstar-making turn that surely won’t be topped this year.

The eloquent and risk-taking Nick Arnstein could be played banally, but Stephen Mark Lukas gives his character the layered subtleties it deserves. For example, Arnstein means well as someone who wants to invest in ventures like casinos, but the consequences of his insecurity to prove his worth vis-à-vis his big-star significant other puts a strain on maintaining traditional marriage dynamics as was the norm in the early 20th century. Lukas’ scenes with McCrimmon are particularly engaging and sometimes a laugh-out-loud hoot like during Nick and Fanny’s date in Baltimore. Lukas more than holds up his end of the bargain in rendering his inscrutable and arguably manipulative Arnstein, inviting observers on a ride of heartrending curiosity.

As Fanny’s supportive mother Mrs. Rose Brice, the Grammy Award-winning Melissa Manchester gives a winning and humanistic performance as someone who lives vicariously through her onstage daughter’s rise and romantic frustrations, reacting with good intentions even if the message might be misplaced. Mrs. Brice’s card-playing companions, Mrs. Strakosh and Meeker, are similarly imbued with loveably comedic energy by Eileen T’Kaye and Cindy Chang, respectively.

Izaiah Montaque Harris is the altruistic Eddie Ryan, a dance director and close advocate of Fanny’s who takes a chance on her when David Foley, Jr.’s enjoyably idiosyncratic Tom Keeney, an Irish theatre owner, is quick to write her off. Harris is especially riveting when he continually ups the ante with a fiery tap demonstration that garners alacritous applause in the first act. Adding a little tap flair of their own are Lamont Brown and Ryan Lambert as the sterling silver-clad “Rat-Tat-Tat-Tat” men who spryly hoof with silver-sheened rifles in tow. The last of the standout cast members is Walter Coppage whose booming, announcer-like intonation gives his esteemed Florenz Ziegfeld much gravitas.

The company, as exemplary as they are, owe much of their presentation to the crew. Just as director Mayer and the choreographers infuse much zest into the production, David Zinn’s depth-perceptive set — inclusive of lights bordering the proscenium — transports viewers back to a more buoyant and elegant past with various backdrops and curtains. Similarly, Susan Hilferty’s costumes are stunning, featuring sparkling attire, as well as flowery and bouquet-shaped headdresses for the Ziegfeld chorus girls. Kevin Adams’ lighting warmly envelops the based-on-a-true-story developments from start to finish, and Michael Rafter’s music supervision (along with orchestrations by Chris Walker and sound design by Brian Ronan and Cody Spencer) ensure that Jule Styne’s tunes are as magnificent and aurally vivid as ever — starting with the lushly melodic overture.

Overall, this slightly updated rendition of Funny Girl pays a compelling tribute to the original concept while offering a refreshed look at a legendary musical. With minor tweaks to the numbers, comic moments, and dramatic beats, what’s old is new again for an audience who can experience what Broadway patrons were raving about in the 1960s. Not to mention, the national tour has a special something — or rather, someone — that the Broadway revival didn’t have: Katerina McCrimmon. Just as one can affirmatively posit that there’s nothing more inspiring than seeing a character (in this case based on an actual woman in Fanny Brice) triumphantly assert her caliber, McCrimmon, the performer herself, does the same with a walloping achievement that produces instantaneous chills.

Funny Girl runs through Sunday, April 28th at the Ahmanson Theatre. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit centertheatregroup.org . Funny Girl will also play at Costa Mesa’s Segerstrom Center from Tuesday, May 28th through Sunday, June 9th. For additional details and tickets, visit scfta.org .

CHICAGO SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

● July 12 – The CSO opens its 88th summer season at Ravinia with Alsop and two featured soloists, soprano Masabane Cecilia Rangwanasha* and pianist Michelle Cann.* In an evening of American music, the orchestra opens with Aaron Copland’s beloved classic Appalachian Spring followed by James P. Johnson’s Charleston, highlighting this early jazz piano leader’s influence and the iconic dance of the same name. Rangwanasha is in the spotlight for Samuel Barber’s evocative portrait of a small boy in the American South, Knoxville: Summer of 1915. The program wraps with a celebration of the 100th anniversary of George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, with Cann at the keyboard making her CSO debut. ● July 13 – South African cellist-composer Abel Selaocoe* joins Alsop and debuts with the CSO performing his Four Spirits, which “takes the concerto format to thrillingly unprecedented places” (Bachtrack). Themes of ancestral wisdom, faith, and community permeate the program, as the piece is put in perspective alongside Ludwig van Beethoven’s monumental Fifth Symphony and its distinct explorations of fate. ● July 19 – Conductor Ted Sperling joins the CSO with special guest vocalists to celebrate two iconic pop songwriters, Stevie Wonder and Paul Simon. ● July 20 – Alsop and the CSO take the stage for Gustav Mahler’s final major work for orchestra, Symphony No. 9. Voted as the greatest symphony of all-time in BBC Music 2 Magazine, the evening-long work has beguiled audiences since its 1912 premiere by Bruno Walter and the Vienna Philharmonic. ● July 21 – Winner of the gold medal at the International Chopin Competition and recipient of many esteemed prizes, Japanese pianist Hayato Sumino* reunites with Alsop and makes his Ravinia and CSO debuts performing Fryderyk Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 1. In the second half of the program, Alsop explores symphonic storytelling during the turn of the 19th century, leading the CSO in Richard Strauss’s tone poem Don Juan and Maurice Ravel’s choreographic symphony Daphnis et Chloé (Suite No. 2). ● July 25 – Mendelssohn's hit violin concerto, played by Augustin Hadelich^, is in the spotlight as Alsop leads the CSO. Also featured on the program are Bernstein’s joyous Symphonic Dances from West Side Story and Stravinsky's timeless Firebird Suite. Conductor Alena Hron , the 2024–26 Taki Alsop Fellow, guests on the podium to lead Geroge Walker’s Icarus in Orbit. ● July 26 – The centerpiece of Breaking Barriers 2024 is a space-themed concert complete with visuals and introductions by NASA specialists. Alsop conducts the orchestra in Holst’s The Planets, followed by a suite from Falkenberg’s The Moons Symphony. Audiences will see science come alive and hear from planetary scientists, including Astronaut Nicole Stott together with the composer, as they discuss how Falkenberg’s symphony offers new perspectives for humanity to contemplate our home in the cosmos. ● July 28 – Taki Alsop Conducting Fellowship alum Carolyn Kuan leads this year’s Tchaikovsky Spectacular, complete with Ravinia’s signature cannons in the 1812 Overture. Making her CSO debut, she opens the program with the complete music from the first act of The Nutcracker. Desirée Ruhstrat also makes her CSO debut as the soloist for the cherished Violin Concerto. ● August 2 – Conductor Valentina Peleggi, another TACF alum, returns to Ravinia and the CSO, following a guest appearance during last summer’s Breaking Barriers Festival, to join with esteemed pianist Jorge Federico Osorio on Beethoven’s “Emperor” Concerto. Peleggi will also lead Tchaikovsky’s Francesca da Rimini and Respighi’s Pines of Rome. ● August 4 – Music director, conductor, and arranger Kevin Stites explores the music of legendary performer and film composer Henry Mancini for the annual Gala Benefit Evening. Curated and hosted by actor Rob Lindley, “Mancini at 100: The Music of Henry Mancini, from the big screen, to the small screen, to the stage and beyond” features Broadway vocalists Jessie Mueller* (Waitress, Beautiful: The Carole King Musical), Norm Lewis* 3 (The Phantom of the Opera, Les Misérables), and Karen Mason* (Sunset Boulevard), with all three making their Ravinia and CSO debuts. ● August 9 & 11 – The CSO delves into operatic repertory as a semi-staging of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Idomeneo is conducted by Los Angeles Opera (and former Ravinia) Music Director James Conlon in the Martin Theatre. The work, set in Crete in 1200 BCE and telling a story from the Trojan War, shines light on a talented group of singers. Starring are tenor Matthew Polenzani as Greek king Idomeneo, soprano Andrea Carroll* as princess Ilia, and soprano Alexandria Shiner* as princess Elettra. ● August 10 – Conlon will lead an all-Mozart program with the CSO in the festival’s Pavilion between the opera performances. The program will feature both of the composer’s G-minor symphonies—the “little” No. 25, K. 183, and the “great” No. 40, K. 550—along with the Violin Concerto No. 5, welcoming James Ehnes as soloist on the violin. ● August 18 – Conductor Jonathan Rush, a frequent Ravinia guest in recent seasons and former assistant to Alsop, returns to the CSO podium. Chicago native Rachel Barton Pine takes the stage with Rush and the orchestra as the soloist for José White Lafitte’s Violin Concerto and Niccolò Paganini’s La Campanella

Bhad Bhabie

Bhad Bhabie is going all-natural.

The rapper took to her Instagram Story Saturday to reveal she dissolved her facial fillers while warning her followers to avoid the cosmetic injections.

“Dissolved all my filler,” she wrote alongside a bare-faced video. “I had cheeks, lips, chin. Stop doing it unless you absolutely need it.

She added, “It makes you look so much older and blocks your lymphatic drainage system causing pillow face!”

Bhad Bhabie

Bhabie, whose real name is Danielle Bregoli, decided to revert to her natural looks after welcoming her first child with boyfriend Le Vaughn last month.

She subtly announced the arrival of her daughter with a black-and-white photo of herself cradling the newborn on her Instagram Story on March 15.

The 21-year-old hasn’t shared any details about her bundle of joy to the world and tends to shield her baby’s face from the camera.

However, Bhabie did give her fans a hint at the infant’s moniker as she documented her baby shower on social media in February with the caption, “A KALI LOVE STORY.”

The photo dump included a picture of decor and monogrammed pillows that read, “Kali Love.”

Bhabie kept her pregnancy under wraps for months before revealing she was expecting in December 2023.

The new mom — who became famous in 2016 for her viral “Cash me outside, how ’bout that” stunt on “Dr. Phil” — has been romantically linked to Vaughn since 2020.

Per TMZ , the couple also have matching tattoos of each other’s name, which they got in April 2023.

They are known to be notoriously private about their relationship but occasionally flaunt each other on social media.

"Uptown Girl" was released in 1983 and immediately gained widespread popularity, peaking at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It was eventually certified triple Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America and remains a beloved hit several decades later with its catchy chorus.

In a 2010 interview with Howard Stern, Joel confirmed that although he initially began writing the song about several women, he eventually became focused on Brinkley.

Clear your calendars! Billie Eilish is bringing Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour to Melbourne

Ashleigh Hastings

In case you missed it, Billie Eilish is sprinting into a new era. As we move beyond the year of Barbie , the 22-year-old superstar has recently let us know that her third album Hit Me Hard and Soft will enter the world on May 17. As if that wasn’t enough (and while we’re still recovering from hearing ‘What Was I Made For?’ for the first time), Eilish has now gone and announced a world tour.

Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour will hit Australia in summer 2025 and tickets go on sale very soon. The tour will have a strong sustainability focus, with Eilish encouraging fans to choose greener transport options and thrift their ‘fits. We’ve found the details you need below.

When is Billie Eilish going on her Melbourne, Australia tour 2025?

Eilish will play four Melbourne dates as part of her 2025 tour of Australia. The ‘Ocean Eyes’ singer will play at Melbourne’s Rod Laver Arena on March 4, 5, 7 and 8 next year.

When do Billie Eilish Melbourne tickets go on sale?

General sale kicks off on Friday, May 3 at 3pm local time via Ticketek . According to Frontier Touring, all dates for this tour have been announced upfront, meaning they don’t have any additional shows up their sleeve. All we can say is get in quick!

Is there a presale?

There’s sure to be wild demand for tickets, so what about presale? Australian presale starts from Wednesday, May 1 onwards in a staggered fashion and there are options for American Express members, Frontier members, Live Nation and Vodaphone .

How much will tickets cost?

There’s no news on ticket prices so far, but we’ll keep this story updated as details come to light. To give you an idea, previous Billie Eilish Rod Laver Arena shows have sold for between $99-179, but that was a few years ago.
