The Deputy Governor Dr John Erus was today paid a courtesy visit by the Vétérinaires Sans Frontières Germany (VSF) team led by the Chief Executive Officer, Christian Griebenow.

The purpose of this visit is to evaluate VSF Germany’s contributions towards addressing the needs of the Turkana community, aspirations, and potential for further cooperation investment in humanitarian and development aid in the County.

Dr John Erus appreciates the support of VSF for its milestone efforts to nurture and improve the livelihood sustainability of the people of Turkana.

“Our aspirations framework as the County Government of Turkana requires integration from development partners to stabilize food security and sustainability in Turkana County,” he said.

The Chief Executive Officer, Christian Griebenow stressed that incorporating pastoralists’ traditional way of animal keeping and agricultural ways is key to accommodating the Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASAL).

VSF has been working on development projects in Turkana that are focused on climate change through enhancing the health and productivity of livestock.

VSF Germany is currently implementing an Integrated Life-Saving Disaster Risk Reduction (ILDRR) project. This intervention contributes to food, nutrition and livelihood security, health, and protection among other crises affecting vulnerable agro-pastoral communities.

The CECM for Agriculture, Livestock Development, and Fisheries, Dr Antony Apalia labeled VSF as a “Traditional partner” because of its longstanding history in Turkana.

“At least 1,165 farmers have benefited through farming tools and capacity building. In Kerio Delta, 300 fisher boats were issued to fisher folks plus additional training. Approximately 183,000 livestock have received vaccination and deworming medical services”.

Other senior county government officials present in the meeting included Chief of Staff- Peter Loyapan, Deputy County Secretaries- Dr Albert Gamoe and Joseph Nyang’a, Chief Officer for Fisheries and Aquaculture- Evans Lomodei, Chief Officer for Agriculture- Janerose Tioko, and Directors from Resource Mobilization and Partnerships, Veterinary Services, and administration services.

FIDA Lagos Paid a Courtesy Visit to the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Lagos State

FIDA Lagos led by the Chairperson, Mrs. Chinwe Efobi paid a courtesy visit to the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Lagos State on Wednesday 20th of April 2022. Present at the meeting were four Directors of the Ministry including the Solicitor General.

The visit was aimed at enhancing the synergy between the Ministry and FIDA Lagos, intimating the Attorney General of outlined programmes and seeking the Ministry’s support.

The Chairperson spoke on behalf of the delegates, she discussed upcoming law week plans and requested for FIAT to enable FIDA Lagos to assist the Ministry in cases involving violation of women and children’s rights. The Chairperson also spoke on the proposed renovation of the Secretariat. It was indeed a very successful and rewarding outing.

Katikkiro Mayiga urges NUP MPs on patience, tolerance

MENGO - The Katikkiro of Buganda Kingdom, Charles Peter Mayiga, has urged National Unity Platform (NUP) party MPs to have patience when dealing with each other and develop tolerance of contrary points of view.

He made the call on Wednesday (March 27) while meeting the MPs who paid him a courtesy visit at his office in Bulange-Mengo, which is the Kingdom’s administrative seat.

They were led by Leader of the Opposition in Parliament (LOP) and Nakawa West MP Joel Ssenyonyi.

“Hon. Ssenyonyi has two children now; he is still a young man. You [Ssenyonyi) will see that those children are not the same, but when they are your children. What will you do? Will you throw one of them out? You have to learn to have patience with each other and give each other respect now when you are still in [the] Opposition,” Mayiga implored the MPs.

His advice will come in handy when internal wrangles are not only rocking the country’s main Opposition political party but also threatening to yield a splinter group and defections ahead of the 2026 general election.

Katikkiro wondered what would happen if the NUP leaders assumed state power without cultivating these virtues.

“If you don’t learn this, what will happen when you get power? You can’t kill whoever makes a mistake. I tell you this as your elder, the Katikkiro,” he said.

NUP, which was formed in July 2020, quickly gained influence in the politics of Buganda where they secured 55 out of 57 parliamentary seats they have.

However, disagreements between party president Robert Kyagulanyi and his deputy for Buganda, Mathias Mpuuga, that have been simmering for two years now boiled over last month when it emerged that the latter received a shillings 500 million one-off service award from the parliamentary commission in May 2022.

Mpuuga, who is also the Nyendo-Mukungwe MP, was given the award for serving as LOP even before his two-and-a-half-year-old term ended in December last year, whipping up a storm in the young party.

Kyagulanyi still claims that this “money-heist was illegal, immoral and wrong, and totally unexpected from a person we delegated to represent our values in Parliament and lead the charge against corruption and misuse of public resources”.

However, Clerk to Parliament Adolf Mwesige defended the pay, terming it ‘akasiimo', meaning a token of appreciation.

Mpuuga also said the payment was legal and denied allegations of corruption and abuse of office leveled against him by his party. ;
