Best 4th Of July Celebrations Along The Gulf Coast

  • United States

From Panama City Beach to Biloxi, the skies over the Gulf Coast will light up with more than just incredible blazing sunsets this summer. Adding to nature’s amazing light show are dozens of must-see 4th of July fireworks displays and celebrations. Here are some of the best Independence Day events the Gulf Coast has to offer.

Florida

1. navarre beach’s hometown 4th .

Described as Florida ’s most relaxing place, Navarre Beach is well known for its pristine white beaches, calming emerald Gulf shoreline, and incredible sunsets, but that tranquility is short-lived on the 4th of July with the town’s Hometown 4th celebration.

Grab your beach blanket or chair and join the fun with live music on the sugary beach, then catch the dazzling firework display over the Gulf.

2. Panama City Beach’s Star Spangled Spectacular

With its small beach town feel, the seaside community of Panama City Beach holds claim to the most beautiful beaches in the world. With 27 miles of glistening white sand hugged by crystal clear emerald Gulf water, it’s hard to argue with them.

The town rocks to life the 4 th of July weekend with its annual Real Fun Fourth . Each night there is a fireworks spectacular beginning with Light Up The Bay on July 2 nd at Papa Joe’s Bayside . The next night, it’s Light Up The Gulf at the Boardwalk Beach Hotel and Convention Center and the Freedom Rocks Fireworks Show at Grand Lagoon.

The holiday is capped off with what is described as the largest fireworks display on the Gulf Coast – the Star Spangled Spectacular at the M.B. Miller County Pier. The show begins at 9 p.m.

3. Destin Commons’ Smoke On The Coast

With almost 70 stores and 20 restaurants, Destin Commons is a must-visit shopping destination for visitors to Florida’s Emerald Coast. The vibrant colors and inviting atmosphere of the Commons makes your shopping experience a pleasure. The Commons is even pet friendly. Leashed pets are allowed to stroll the streets with you. There are even dog-friendly restaurants , including World of Beer, Starbucks, and Smashburger, where dogs are allowed to dine with you on their patios. They even have treats for your pup.

But the Destin Commons really comes to life on the 4th of July as the best pitmasters along the Florida panhandle descend on the center for a charity fundraiser —   Smoke on the Coast . The party kicks off around dinnertime as the smokers are opened and visitors are treated to inexpensive samples of the mouthwatering barbeque. The walkways are filled with music and activities, then the sky above reverberates with the sound and spectacle of their Independence Day firework extravaganza.

Admission is free, but during the celebration, parking meters are set up in front of your favorite stores and you are asked to drop in a coin or two (or use a credit card). Those coins go to fund the Destin Commons Coins for a Cause program, a charity that has raised over $1.5 million for a variety of local charities benefitting at-risk youth and education, animal welfare, and disaster relief programs.

4. Pensacola July 4th Fireworks

With a light sea breeze blowing in from the Gulf of Mexico, the sugary white beaches of Pensacola light up each year with a spectacular firework display at the Pensacola Beach Boardwalk along Santa Rosa Sound.

The boardwalk is filled with incredible shops, dining experiences, and live entertainment that will fill your day with fun before the big show lights up the sky at night.

And while in Pensacola , how about a little baseball? The Pensacola Blue Wahoos , a Miami Marlins AA affiliate, knows how to celebrate the 4th of July with a bang. When at home, the team celebrates with a week of fireworks following each game culminating in a spectacular, extra-long display on the 4th.

Alabama

5. mobile fireworks .

The skies will light up along the Mobile, Alabama’s famed waterfront at Cooper’s Riverside Park for the city’s big fireworks show.

Spend the day visiting the city’s fascinating museums , like the Carnival Museum that celebrates the birthplace of Mardi Gras , the Gulfquest Maritime Museum , or the Mobile History Museum . Maybe do a little shopping at one of the city’s eclectic stores or grab a bite to eat at one of Mobile’s amazing restaurants .

6. OWA

Next to fireworks, picnics, ice cream, and a day at the beach, nothing screams summertime fun more than spending a day at an amusement park, and the 4th of July is the absolute best time to visit OWA park in Foley .

Get there early and spend the day riding the park’s thrill rides, like the twists, turns, and sheer drops of Rollin’ Thunder and the Alabama Wham , or cool off in the Gravity Island Water Obstacle Course . Admission is required to the amusement park side of OWA.

For those of you who aren’t thrill-seekers, spend the afternoon shopping in the many stores that line the streets of Downtown OWA, then grab dinner at one of the park’s eight amazing restaurants, including Paula Deen’s Family Kitchen and Lucy’s Retired Surfer’s Bar and Restaurant, before the big show kicks off. Live music fills the streets, and the sky hosts one of the largest synchronized fireworks displays on the Alabama Gulf Coast.

Downtown OWA and the OWA’s 4th of July celebration is free.

7. The Wharf

Ready to party? The Alabama Gulf Coast’s premier shopping, dining, and entertainment venue, the Wharf , is gearing up for its annual Independence Day Street Party .

Dance down the streets with live DJ music throughout the day. Have a sweet treat, lunch, or dinner, or grab a drink at one of the Wharf’s 18 restaurants and snack shops. If you have kids, there are always plenty of activities for them.

After the sun goes down, those same streets come alive when all of the palm trees that line the route are lit in blazing red, white, and blue lights before the big show, the fireworks display, ignites the night sky.

Oh, and if you can’t make it the day of the street party but want to see fireworks, the Wharf shoots them off every Monday night throughout the summer with their Sparks After Dark show.

The Street Party is normally held on July 3, but as of this writing, the management tells us the actual date may change. Visit the Wharf’s event calendar for updates. Admission to the Street Party is free; however, some attractions do charge a fee. Check the Wharf’s website for current pricing.

8. Flora-Bama 4th Of July Celebration

Straddling the border between Alabama and Florida, the world-famous Flora-Bama Lounge and Oyster Bar hosts a lively day of fun in the sun along the Gulf’s beaches beginning at 11 a.m., with live music, drinks, and amazing Southern barbecue throughout the day. The celebration is highlighted by the Miss Firecracker Bikini Contest and the annual Freedom Run with participants donning their most patriotic running wear for a 4K run/walk or 1-mile fun run/walk.

The night wraps up with a raucous firework display over the beach. Registration is required to participate in the Freedom Run.

9. Grand Bay Watermelon Festival

It wouldn’t be the 4th of July without watermelon, now, would it? For two days — July 2 and 3 — the town of Grand Bay opens up Odd Fellows Festival Park for a good old fashioned Independence Day celebration featuring live music, rides, games for old and young alike, an open car show, pretty baby contest, and of course, all of the free, ice-cold watermelon you can eat.

See the Grand Bay Watermelon Festival website for time and pricing information.

10. Ship Island Fireworks Cruise

The sunsets over the Gulf are breathtaking. As the sun slowly dips over the horizon, it bursts into one final gasp of brilliant orange then morphs into a purple hue before vanishing.

The Ship Island Excursion ferry normally shuttles visitors to beautiful Ship Island, one of the Gulf’s beautiful barrier islands and part of the Gulf Islands National Seashore , for a day lazing on the beach, hiking, and bird watching, but on the 4th of July, they offer a unique way to view the spectacle of a Gulf sunset and the dazzling fireworks show in Gulfport.

The cruise leaves from Yacht Harbor at Jones Park and heads into the Gulf. The cruise concludes with the fireworks show. Visit the Ship Island Excursion website for pricing, times, and to reserve your seat.

11. Gulf Port 4th Of July On The Schooner

How about viewing fireworks not only from the Gulf but also aboard a beautiful schooner? The Maritime and Seafood Industry Museum’s Biloxi Schooner sets sail on the 4th for a cruise around Biloxi Bay and the Deer Island Coastal Preserve before returning to view a spectacular sunset over the Gulf and the Biloxi fireworks extravaganza.

Sober New Year’s Fireworks Cruise by Frisky Mermaid

fireworks cruise pensacola

Frisky Mermaid Dolphin Tours & Boat Rentals announces a Zero-Proof Sober New Year’s Fireworks Cruise providing a sober space to ring in the New Year.

fireworks cruise pensacola

This alcohol-free affair will provide a chance to enjoy fireworks over the water and celebrate the magic of new beginnings in a substance-free environment.  They are hoping for such an overwhelmingly positive response from the community that Zero-Proof becomes an annual event and part of the fabric of New Year’s Celebrations on Pensacola Beach.

“While exploring options in the area, the need became obvious to provide an alternative to the usual New Year’s Eve celebrations serving alcohol.  Being away from the typical substance-heavy events to mark the holiday, we think sober events are a great choice and much easier when you are surrounded by people who do it every day and are happy”, say owners Dee & Steve Holcomb.

Departure is 11:15p sharp with limited availability on December 31, 2023. Tickets can be purchased @ friskyboattours.com  and include an alcohol-free toast at midnight.

Non-alcoholic beverages and snacks will be available for purchase onboard Frisky Mermaid, which is docked behind Shaggy’s on Pensacola Beach.

For additional information, please contact Deandra Holcomb at  [email protected] .

Embark on the adventure of a lifetime aboard the Buccaneer Pirate Cruise ! Our popular pirate cruise tour is located at HarborWalk Village in Destin, Florida. Board the iconic Destin pirate ship as we take to the seas on the pristine waters off the Emerald Coast in search of undiscovered treasure. Entertainment and interaction create adventure, excitement, and merriment for the young and young at heart.

Our captain and mates amuse the whole crew from beginning to end with pirate-themed activities, witty banter, singing, dancing, and family fun. The crew engages willing participants in pirate training, sword fighting, water gun battles, a treasure hunt, and authentic cannon fire.

Parents are welcome to join in with the Scallawags and Lil Bucs, but only those brave enough to complete the pirate training will be made honorary members of the Buccaneer Crew. If you’re not keen to plundering and swabbing the decks, simply kick back, take in the scenery, and watch your lads and lasses have the time of their lives.

We operate by the slogan “Unlock the Treasure of Your Heart and Let Your Dreams Come True”, and we strive to ensure that every mate aboard always follows the desires of their hearts and never stops believing in their dreams.

An Exciting, Family-Fun Adventure Like No Other!

This is such a great family experience! Kid and adult friendly entertainment. Shot a cannon and hoisted up a real live treasure from the sea! My son is still singing the songs he learned. Would highly recommend!

Our kids had a blast! It was fun watching the kids and parents play pirate games together. The crew included ALL age groups. The cruise was beautiful as well. They sell snacks, pirate toys and adult beverages! It’s WELL worth the money!

We took our 4, 2, and 1 year old boys on the cruise while on vacation and the crew of the ship was able to interact with each one. The kids all got booty and still talk about the pirates and the swords and pistols. Well worth the money!

We loved every minute of this pirate adventure! They’re very entertaining and the kids enjoyed the whole experience a lot. We went home and my kids still pretended to be pirates. Highly recommend it!

This was an amazing experience! We were entertained the entire cruise. My 6 year old and 7 year old boys loved the experience. My husband and I had a blast as well. Definitely recommend this experience for families visiting the city.

Put this cruise at the top of your list of things to do on your next Destin, Florida trip! Kids aged 3-10 will enjoy this the most, but it’s even fun for parents! Drinks, souvenirs, entertainment, and beautiful views- there isn’t much left to want!

Our kids loved it! The ride was nice for adults as well. Lots of fun activities and the crew never lost enthusiasm. My son is convinced he rode a real pirate ship with pirates! He’s talked about it nonstop since. Definitely money well spent!

I absolutely enjoyed this trip. I was a volunteer for a field trip and the kids had a blast. The staff entertained the kids and it was awesome. All of the staff were very friendly. I would definitely do this cruise again!

My 4 year old is pirate crazy and he had an absolute blast! I also took my 12 and 13 year old along with my wife. We all had a great time. This was the highlight of our vacation. Highly recommend. Would give it 6 stars if it were an option!

Best beach towns to retire: Does Daytona Beach make list from U.S. News & World Report?

fireworks cruise pensacola

If you daydream about starting retirement along the shores of a glorious beach, you’re probably not alone.

Fortunately, the Sunshine State offers numerous destinations that offer a hospitable backdrop for retirees, a fact reflected in the state’s formidable showing in a new list of the “ 10 Best Beach Towns to Retire in the U.S. ” by U.S. News & World Report.

In presenting its results, the publication acknowledged the practical considerations involved in choosing an appropriate retirement destination.

Although solitude might be part of a beachy retirement fantasy, a remote beach area isn't always the right fit for retirees, who also need access to amenities and services, such as quality health care and transportation options, the magazine states.

“When you think of retirement locales, Florida is probably the first state to come to mind — and for good reason,” the magazine stated in introducing its list. “With its ample coastline, there's no shortage of great beach towns to choose from, and the cost of living is low.”

U.S. News reached out to real estate experts and combed the cities highlighted in U.S. News' 2024 Best Places to Retire rankings to find the best beach towns for retirees.

A whopping eight Florida cities made the Top 10, a list rounded out by Portland, Maine, and Virginia Beach, Virginia.

Here are the Florida cities that made the list, which the magazine presented in alphabetical order.

Daytona Beach

“If you're looking for a cheap place to retire near the beach, consider Daytona Beach,” the magazine stated in its appraisal of the World’s Most Famous Beach.

“The median home price is $375,917, and the median rent is $1,181 per month. The city is a popular retirement spot, and 25% of the population is 65 or older. But this is not a sleepy seaside community. The headquarters for NASCAR is home to several large motor sports events each year.

U.S. News also notes healthcare services provided by Halifax Health Medical Center of Daytona Beach and AdventHealth Daytona Beach as well as the fact that “cars can be driven onto some of the hard-packed sandy beaches” among reasons to consider retirement there.

Jacksonville

“Jacksonville boasts 22 miles of white-sand beaches along the Atlantic coast,” the magazine states.

“Movie nights and musical events are frequently hosted at the Seawalk Pavilion in Jacksonville Beach during the spring and summer months. The Jacksonville Beach Pier provides opportunities for deep-water fishing and strolling nearly a quarter mile past the shore. And the less-crowded Neptune Beach often attracts surfers.”

The magazine also touts additional boating and fishing along the St. Johns River , a median home price of $391,804, median monthly rent of $1,175 and the fact that about 16% of the population is 65 or older.

Melbourne also is recommended as an affordable beach town for retirement, with a median home price of $217,400 a median monthly rent of $1,185 and a population with about 24% of residents 65 or older.

The magazine points to the activities that include catching glimpses of passing dolphins and sea turtles at the Indian River Lagoon or observing creatures at the Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge, between Melbourne Beach and Wabasso Beach.

The magazine describes Naples as “more expensive than many other parts of Florida” that is “known as a tropical playground for the powerful and wealthy.” It points to a median home price of $823,196, median monthly rent is $1,440 and 32% of the population age 65 or older.

“But many people find the high quality of life in Naples to be worth the cost,” the magazine states.

Pensacola scores high marks for desirability, according to the magazine, “with many people age 45 and older expressing an interest in moving to the area.”

“Located on Pensacola Bay near the Gulf of Mexico, this popular beach retirement spot is an ideal place to enjoy Perdido Key, Pensacola Beach and the Gulf Islands National Seashore. You'll find that about 17% of the population is 65 or older, the median cost of a home is $316,695 and renters pay a median of $1,105 monthly.”

Port St. Lucie

Located about halfway between Miami and Orlando, Port St. Lucie is described by U.S. News as “more laid back and affordable than these larger cities.”

Port St. Lucie scored high on the magazine’s desirability metric, and “many people age 45 and older are interested in retiring in the area, according to a U.S. News survey. About 26% of the population is age 65 or older. The median home price is $429,104, and the median monthly rent is $1,256.”

Sarasota's picturesque beaches, including Lido Key and Siesta Key, draw many visitors and retirees to the area, according to the U.S. News ranking. “The unusual quartz sand at Siesta Beach stays cool even on sunny days. But that's not all it has to offer.”

The median home price in Sarasota is $387,630, and the median rent is $1,359 per month, the magazine states. Sarasota Memorial Health Care System and HCA Florida Sarasota Doctors Hospital are major health care providers for the community.

Located along the Gulf Coast and Tampa Bay, Tampa promises powdery sand and swaying palms along with the skyscrapers and high-rises of a major metro area, according to the U.S. News ranking.

“The combination can work well for retirees looking for an affordable place to retire near the beach without giving up the amenities and services of city living.”

Tampa's entertainment options include a port for cruise ships, theme parks and professional sports teams. The median home price is $427,241, and the median rent is $1,230 monthly. About 20% of Tampa's population is 65 or older, the magazine states.
