How much does a cruise cost?

Melinda Crow

Budgeting for a cruise can be complicated. The advertised cruise fare is really only the starting point, to which you must add port fees and taxes (which vary by individual port), gratuities for the crew, port parking if you drive to the port, airfare and airport parking if you fly, and transfers to and from either the airport or a hotel (yet another additional cost).

After you add those up, you can begin to add onboard extras like specialty drinks or drink packages, Wi-Fi and food options that aren't included in the cruise fare. And then there's the cost of port activities to consider. Add it all up, and you might be amazed at how much your total travel costs have skyrocketed from the base cruise fare.

To demonstrate how much a cruise really costs, I'm going to break things down so you can add up the costs that you would likely incur. Because cruise costs vary widely, I'll use real examples from my recent seven-night cruise on Celebrity Cruises to the Mexican Riviera , coupled with averages.

How much is a typical cruise fare?

how much do cruise tickets usually cost

Cruise fares can be as cheap as $179 for a four-night Carnival cruise or as expensive as $11,000 per night for the top Regent Suite on Regent Seven Seas Cruises ' newest ships.

On the low end, fares for the cheapest inside cruise cabins average between $50 and $75 per person, per night. Anything you can find below those prices is a major steal; popular sailings will likely be more expensive.

Cabins with a window will cost a bit more, and a balcony room will be almost double the cost of an inside room. Averages across the major cruise lines for balcony cabins fall between $100 and $150 per night most of the year. Suites and rooms on upscale or luxury cruise lines cost considerably more, but you get more for your money.

All cruise lines provide basics like transportation, accommodation, food at select restaurants for all meals, and a selection of entertainment and activities in the fare.

My Celebrity cruise cost $2,700 for two people in an AquaClass Sunset Verandah cabin. That breaks down to $193 per person, per night. It was a rear-facing balcony cabin, which is typically a higher price. AquaClass includes unlimited access to the ship's thermal suite, two bottles of water supplied daily in the cabin, afternoon canapes and access to Blu, an exclusive dining room with a spa-oriented menu for breakfast and dinner.

What extra costs might I incur?

Cruise fares for extra guests.

how much do cruise tickets usually cost

In most cases, unless there is a special at the time you book your cruise, you will pay extra for having any number of guests in a cabin other than two. Third and fourth guests (or more if you book a large suite) pay a fare that is lower than the fare for the first two guests. Some lines run specials offering free or $99 third- and fourth-person fares from time to time.

Solo travelers usually pay a single supplement to make up for the lack of double occupancy in the room. The supplement can be equal to the cost of a second guest, but some lines offer deals for much less or have single cabins that do not include a supplement.

Port fees and taxes

Extra fees and taxes are part of your final cruise fare, but they usually aren't included in the first price shown when you are cruise shopping. (They might be there, but in fine print). The amounts are based on the specific ports you will visit. The more ports your cruise visits and the longer it stays in port, the more you will be charged.

Some regions (like Alaska) tend to have higher port fees than others. Fees are also higher on larger ships because the cruise line is charged docking space based on size. Fees are lowest when ships tender rather than dock.

Here are average taxes and fees for large ships on seven-night cruises, based on the destination:

  • The Bahamas, Caribbean and Mexico : $140 to $200 per person
  • Europe: $50 to $100
  • Alaska: $250 to $350 (but can be higher)

Taxes, fees and port charges on my Celebrity cruise totaled $186.45 per person. The ship called at Catalina Island, Cabo San Lucas and San Diego.

For comparison, my most recent Alaska cruise was a five-night sailing with only two ports of call. The taxes, fees and port charges totaled a whopping $373.64 per person. I recently booked a 15-night transatlantic sailing between Rome and Tampa, with four stops — three in Europe and one in the Bahamas. My bill shows taxes, fees and port expenses of only $139.65 per person.

Crew gratuities

Most cruise lines give you the opportunity to pay crew tips at the time of booking. If you choose not to pay in advance, the auto-gratuity will be added daily to your onboard bill.

The current average for standardized tips is between $15 and $20 per person, per night, depending on the cruise line and the type of cabin you book.

Gratuities on my Mexican Riviera cruise on Celebrity were $17.50 per night, for a total of $245 for two people.

Trip insurance

You can argue the pros and cons of insuring your cruise, but my basic advice is to insure it.

There simply are too many variables when it comes to cruising to leave it all up to chance. The medical coverage outside the country alone is reason enough to include this in your cruise budget.

I bought a cruise travel insurance policy for my Celebrity cruise through Squaremouth. The total cost for two people was $231.18. It was cheaper than what the cruise line offered and provided better coverage.

Travel costs

Obviously, you'll need to pay extra to travel to your port of embarkation, whether that's airfare, a ride-hailing service or parking and gas. Don't forget to budget for transfers between the airport, hotel and ship if you're not driving to the port and parking there.

On my Celebrity cruise, extra transportation costs included ride-hailing service from the airport to a pre-cruise hotel, from the hotel to the port and from the port to the airport at the end of the cruise. The transportation total was $155.71.

The hotel itself was booked using Wyndham Rewards Points, but you should budget for lodging if you book a pre- or post-cruise stay.

Food on board and in port

how much do cruise tickets usually cost

All cruise lines include meals at several onboard restaurants in their cruise fares, but most also give passengers plenty of ways to spend money on dining and snacks.

The most common dining expenses are for eating at specialty restaurants . These either charge a per-person fee to dine or price menu items a la carte. Dining at these restaurants is voluntary, but it's easy to get tempted, especially on longer itineraries.

Specialty restaurant charges start as low as $18 per person (select restaurants on Carnival ships) and climb beyond the $200 mark (such as the New York Supper Club on Royal Caribbean 's new Icon of the Seas at $200 per person and the Collection dining option in Enchante on Disney Wish at $205).

Other extra food charges can be as simple as a fee for special menu items when dining in a complementary venue. For example, lobster in the main dining room on Celebrity ships will cost you $16.99, while a gigantic 40-ounce, bone-in tomahawk ribeye at Windstar Cruises ' Candles (a complimentary specialty eatery) will cost $50.

You might also spend money on extra-fee gelato, ice cream sundaes, fancy snacks or baked goods at onboard coffee shops.

Room service is also not free on many cruise lines. The room service menu in your cabin or in the ship's app will state delivery fees and/or a la carte prices. Examples include $9.95 per delivery on Royal Caribbean, Celebrity and Norwegian Cruise Line ships ; Royal Caribbean and Celebrity offer continental breakfast for free. Other lines skip the room service fee but charge a la carte for specialty items like breakfast smoothies or steak and eggs ($15, Holland America ). Snacks in the in-room fridge/minibar incur a charge on most cruise lines.

One last thing that people spend money on is food in port. Some excursions include meals, but if not, add a bit to your budget for a few treats — either food or drink. It's a nice way to experience the culture of the destinations you cruise to. How can you visit Italy without grabbing a slice of pizza?

On my Celebrity cruise, I booked a cabin category that included breakfast and dinner in an exclusive specialty restaurant, so I did not pay for any food upcharges onboard. I did, however, buy a cookie in port on Catalina Island, so I spent $5 on extra food.

By contrast, on a recent Royal Caribbean cruise, we opted to dine at two specialty restaurants. Both were spur-of-the-moment decisions because we didn't see anything on the main dining room menu that sparked our interest. Most specialty restaurants can be booked pre-cruise for a slight discount. Our total for the two meals, with wine and gratuities, was $249.36. Fixed-price specialty restaurants typically include everything but alcoholic drinks.

how much do cruise tickets usually cost

Nonalcoholic drinks like drip coffee, hot and iced tea, some sort of punch, juice, lemonade, milk (at mealtimes) and tap water will be included no matter which cruise line you choose. All other beverages will cost extra.

Soda costs extra on all big-ship cruise lines except Disney Cruise Line and will run you $4.50 to $6 when ordered individually. If you're addicted to Diet Coke or other soft drinks, budget for a soda package, which gets you unlimited consumption for a flat daily rate.

For example, Royal Caribbean's soda package is currently $12.99 per person, per day but can fluctuate during peak travel times. Carnival's is $9.50 per day for adults. It may only take a few sodas per day to make the package cost-effective.

Bottled water (on lines that don't include it) typically costs $3-$5 when purchased individually or as low as $9.95 for a case of twelve bottles delivered to your cabin (Carnival). The bottle of water left out in your cabin is likely not free unless you receive free water as a perk for being a member of the cruise line's loyalty program or are in a cabin class that includes it.

Unless your cruise fare specifically states there are alcoholic beverages included, you'll pay extra for beer, wine, cocktails and spirits in any venue onboard. You have the option to either purchase drinks as you go or buy a package. Beer prices are $7-$10 on most ships. Wine by the glass can be as low as $9 or as high as $25. Cocktails average between $10 and $17 on most ships but can be higher for specialty drinks or with premium call liquors. Wine by the bottle (which you can take to your cabin or finish at subsequent meals) starts around $25 and climbs steeply from there.

Most lines offer drink packages that cover alcoholic beverages up to a set amount per drink. Package prices can vary dramatically, depending on the itinerary and sailing dates. Expect to pay around $100 per person per day for a full cruise package, including tips. Carnival's Cheers package will be a bit lower, and Norwegian's Premium Plus Beverage Package is higher.

Lines that include some alcoholic drinks in the cruise fare usually offer a package to upgrade to premium drinks, which may have a broader choice of drinks or venues where they are available. An example of that is on Viking cruises , where the fare includes house beer, wine and sodas during lunch and dinner. If you want drinks other than at meals or that include call liquors, you can purchase a package for $25 per person, per night for the wider selection available at any bar at any time they are open.

An additional beverage cost to keep in mind is corkage fees for bottles of wine you bring onboard (within the cruise line's limits). The fees run between $10 and $25 per bottle. On most ships, the fee is only charged if you take the bottle to the dining room or a bar to be opened and served there. NCL charges the corkage fee at embarkation, regardless of where you plan to consume the wine.

Related: How to get free or cheap drinks on a cruise

Other extras include smoothies and fresh-squeezed juices (often available at breakfast, either in the buffet or at eateries near the spa or solarium.) Costs for these can average nearly $10 on some lines but may be included in some beverage packages.

I carry my own water bottle that I fill at the drink stations, plus we had two bottles delivered each day in AquaClass, so I didn't pay for any water on my Celebrity cruise. Also, because of our cabin class, smoothies were served daily at no charge in the exclusive Blu dining room.

I'm a happy tea drinker, so I don't spend extra on specialty coffees or sodas. Celebrity allows you to bring two bottles of wine onboard per cabin. We drank those in our cabin to avoid the corkage fee (you can ask your cabin attendant for a bottle opener and two glasses). Celebrity offers free drinks in the casino while gambling, so my extra drink cost was zero.

Entertainment and attractions

While most onboard entertainment is free, you can expect to pay extra for a handful of over-the-top activities. Carnival Cruise Line's rollercoaster , Norwegian Cruise Line's go-karts and Royal Caribbean's iFly skydiving experience are examples of extra-fee activities.

Also, expect to pay extra for video games, bingo, casino gambling, fitness classes and spa and salon treatments and services.

Spa, fitness and salon

how much do cruise tickets usually cost

You can easily run up a bill in the spa on most ships. Most mainstream cruise lines charge extra for access to their thermal suites, which include heated loungers, saunas, steam rooms, mood showers and sometimes pools or hot tubs not accessible to the public. Daypasses start at $30 per person (Carnival) to more than $40. Full-cruise passes are often available.

Services like massages, scrubs and wraps can soar well into the $200 per treatment range, and medi-spa offerings like acupuncture or teeth whitening are even more. Use of fitness equipment is complimentary, but classes or private time with a trainer will add to your bill.

Salon charges are likely to be higher than most of us pay at home, but a little cruise pampering never hurt anyone.

On my Celebrity cruise, our AquaClass stateroom granted us access to the thermal suite — one more bonus of choosing that room class. Spa staterooms are available on several other cruise lines, including Carnival and Holland America. I did not partake in any other spa or salon services on my Celebrity cruise, but for comparison, on a recent Windstar sailing, I had a Fire and Ice mani-pedi. The cost was $159 plus tip and included a delightful hand and foot massage.

Shore excursions and tours in port

Shore excursions are an extra charge on most cruises, though upscale, luxury and most river cruises include a selection of both complimentary excursions and extra-fee excursions. Pricing varies widely based on type of tour, duration and age of participant. You can book through the cruise line or arrange your own tour or excursion independently.

In most destinations, you can easily spend $100 or more per person for an excursion. Excursions in Alaska are considerably pricier than in the Caribbean. Activities involving airplanes or helicopters cost more, as do private tours arranged exclusively for your group. (Splitting a private tour with newfound cruise friends with similar interests can be a great way to save.)

Also watch out for destinations where the ship docks some distance from the city you are expecting to see. This happens frequently in Europe — Rome, Athens and Venice, for example. Some cruise lines will supply complimentary transfers between the port and the primary destination city, but others expect you to either find your own way or pay for an excursion to the destination city.

Related: Avoid these 10 mistakes when booking cruise shore excursions

Here's my shore excursion tally from my Celebrity cruise:

  • Whale Watch Cabo (booked independently): $180 for two people with a tip
  • 5-hour private Jeep tour of the island with Catalina Taxi and Tours, including a stop at the island's famous Airport in the Sky for spectacular island views: $875 for two people (this was comped for us by Love Catalina)

In total, I would have paid $1,055 for excursions (including the Catalina tour that I did not have to pay for), which is a modest budget for two people on a seven-night cruise. For example, on previous cruises in the Caribbean, I have spent over $400 per port for two people for activities like scuba diving, snorkeling or zip lining.

Onboard Wi-Fi is generally included in the cruise fare only on luxury lines and is offered in a variety of packages on all other lines. Be prepared for sticker shock: Onboard Internet packages, with or without streaming access, are expensive compared to what you pay for home Wi-Fi.

Premium Wi-Fi is a must for me. The cost during my cruise was $35 per device, per day. The cruise line provided it at no charge, but the total would have been $490.

Related: How can I get Wi-Fi on a cruise for free?

Cruise ships will do your laundry for you — for an extra fee, of course. You'll find a laundry/dry cleaning bag in your closet or in a drawer. Charges for cruise ship laundry services range from $6 per piece for washing and ironing shirts to $15 for a dress. Some cruise lines have a fill-the-bag special that allows you to stuff a laundry bag with as much as you can and pay a single price, often around $35.

You might be entitled to free laundry services if you're staying in a specific type of suite or have reached a certain status of the cruise line's loyalty program.

During my Mexican Riviera cruise, I took advantage of a status offer on Celebrity and had them launder a full bag at no charge.

How much does it cost to go on a cruise?

For my seven-night Mexican Riviera cruise in an Aqua Class Sunset Verandah cabin on Celebrity Solstice, here's my total for two people (including charges that were comped):

  • Cruise fare : $2,700
  • Port taxes: $372.90
  • Standard gratuities: $245
  • Trip insurance: $231.18
  • Extra transportation: $155.71
  • Shore excursions: $1,055
  • Wi-Fi: $490

Add all those expenses up, and the grand total was $5,254.79.

The thing that jumps out at me is that the total cost is almost twice the cruise fare. And that's without any airfare. I ran the numbers on several other cruises by shopping online and found that to be true in most cases. The exceptions are cruises with lots of inclusions. Those mostly fall into the upscale and luxury categories.

You can find ways to lower the cruise fare itself — as I did by earning a comped cabin through gambling on a prior cruise — or by booking a cheaper cabin category. Places in the budget where you can skimp a little include extra food and beverages and shore excursions (especially if you've previously visited the ports or can walk around town independently). You can also utilize credit card points and airline miles for some of your costs.

The bottom line, though, is that in most cases, your total cruise vacation will cost considerably more than the cruise fare alone.

How Much Does a Cruise Cost?

The average cost of a cruise varies by ship, destination, trip length and more. Use this guide to learn more about cruise costs.

A cruise can be an affordable and fun vacation option – just make sure you understand all the variables that add up to a cruise's total cost.

With the rising cost of everything, including travel, cruise fares – some as low as $26 per person per night based on double occupancy – seem like an incredible bargain. And they certainly can be, but the fares you see advertised online often don't include extras like taxes, fees, port expenses, gratuities, shore excursions, specialty dining, alcoholic beverages, specialty coffees, room service fees and more.

Cruise pricing can be confusing with so many variables; unless you're sailing with a smaller luxury line that is all-inclusive , your bill on the day of disembarkation may be unexpected or even shocking. Small things like buying bottled water or renting noodles for floating in the ocean at a cruise line's private island can add up quickly. To help you plan better for a cruise vacation , U.S. News has broken down some of the costs and add-ons you need to take into consideration before booking your next getaway on the high seas.

How much does a one-week cruise cost?

A cruise can cost anywhere from about $171 per person for a four-night Bahamas cruise to up to $94,999 per person for a 154-night world cruise and anywhere in between. Cruise fares vary based on itinerary, number of nights, cabin type, amenities and cruise line. Here are a few examples of base cruise cost ranges on larger cruise lines for various regions:

  • A seven-night Caribbean cruise in November costs approximately $424 to $1,158 per person.
  • A seven-night Alaska cruise in May costs approximately $244 to $1,632 per person.
  • A seven-night Western Mediterranean cruise in June costs approximately $439 to $3,218 per person.
  • A seven-night Mexico cruise in January costs approximately $529 to $695 per person.
  • A seven-night Canada and New England cruise in October costs approximately $470 to $954 per person.

What's included in the base fare with a larger cruise line?

Aerial of family sitting on lounge chairs, being served drinks on a cruise ship

Mass-market cruise lines such as Royal Caribbean International , Norwegian Cruise Line , MSC Cruises and Carnival Cruise Line – and more upscale lines like Celebrity Cruises , Holland America Line , Cunard Line , Disney Cruise Line and Princess Cruises – advertise "starting from" base fares, which are for inside cabins. These are the least expensive staterooms on the ship, and they do not have windows. Staying in these accommodations still gives you access to all the complimentary dining venues, several types of nonalcoholic beverages (nonbottled water, iced tea, lemonade, juices, hot coffee and tea), the ship's pools, the gym, kids clubs and onboard entertainment.

If you want a room with a view – or a larger stateroom – consider booking an ocean view room with a porthole or window, or a cabin with a balcony or veranda. With these rooms, you'll have access to all the ship's included amenities and typically more spacious accommodations for the week. Of course, this option will come at a higher price point.

No matter which room category you choose, port expenses, taxes and fees are not included in the base fares, and they're automatically added to the cost of your cruise. The amount of these charges will depend on the length of your cruise and where you're sailing. Gratuities for the staff and crew are also additional.

What if you want more amenities and perks?

If you splurge on a suite or a higher room category, such as Celebrity's Concierge Class, you'll get perks like priority embarkation, a Welcome Aboard Concierge Class Lunch, complimentary sparkling wine and daily tastings (upon request), concierge service, invitations to exclusive destination seminars, pillow selection and more.

With Disney Cruise Line's Concierge Staterooms and Suites, guests have a dedicated concierge agent offering personalized assistance for pre-arrival planning for port adventures, dining reservations, other onboard activities and special requests. You'll also have priority check-in and boarding, complimentary Wi-Fi, access to a private lounge, and other perks.

You may opt to stay within an exclusive area of the ship, such as MSC Cruises' Yacht Club, Norwegian's The Haven or Celebrity's The Retreat. These high-end private retreats offer an all-inclusive experience with additional features, while still including access to all the entertainment, dining venues and more on board. The accommodations can cost hundreds more dollars per day, but you'll have an experience similar to sailing on a small luxury vessel.

For example, the MSC Yacht Club offers an intimate all-inclusive space within its larger ships. The private area is accessible with a key card and features luxurious suites, a dedicated concierge, 24-hour butler service, a private restaurant and lounge, a rooftop pool, and other amenities. There are also additional dining and snack options throughout the day at the pool and lounge.

You'll find similar amenities in Norwegian's and Celebrity's private retreats, including priority boarding and disembarkation, exclusive sun deck areas, and priority access when boarding tenders for going ashore.

What factors determine pricing?

Base pricing and the additional components vary greatly among the cruise lines, so you'll need to determine what your budget is for the trip – and what you can and can't live without when it comes to accommodations and amenities. Travelers may also find that one cruise line has a deal or promotion with reduced pricing that includes airfare, specialty dining, a beverage package, free Wi-Fi or other perks in the advertised rate, while another line isn't running any specials for a similar itinerary.

Voyages on older cruise ships tend to be less expensive, so if you're on a tight budget, consider a ship with fewer bells and whistles. If you're sailing on a short itinerary in the Bahamas and plan to lounge by the pool or on the beach all day, you may not be concerned about having high-tech onboard amenities, martini bars and several specialty restaurants.

Save the money to splurge on more expensive fares when you're planning to sail on longer voyages on larger and newer ships. You'll want several days at sea to enjoy the onboard amenities on some vessels, such as a three-level racetrack and a 10-story-tall slides on a new ship like Norwegian Prima or its new sister ship, Norwegian Viva, set to debut in summer 2023.

Another significant factor to consider is the time of year you want to travel. Better deals are available in the offseason, but the offseason varies depending on what part of the world you're traveling to. For example, May is a great time to find a deal in the Caribbean. The offseason – or shoulder season – in that market typically runs from May to November. However, keep in mind this period overlaps with hurricane season .

You also may be able to find last-minute deals in many other destinations if you're flexible. Working with a travel agent is an excellent way to learn of last-minute specials and cruise deals that offer add-ons like beverage packages, specialty dining inclusions, shore excursions and other perks. You can also check out the online specials that change frequently.

Solo travelers may pay more

Back of woman holding her hat, with her scarf flying in the wind, on a cruise ship

If you're traveling alone , you may also need to factor in a single supplement, which can add up to as much as 100% of the cruise fare. To save money, bring a friend so you can access the lower double occupancy fare or consider lines that feature rooms for solo travelers; select Royal Caribbean, Norwegian and Celebrity ships offer solo cabins.

These smaller accommodations – around 100 to 200 square feet in size – are priced and designed for solo travelers. Key card access to Norwegian's Studio Complex and Lounge is included with the line's solo cabins and offers a place to relax and mix and mingle with other cruisers. Other lines that offer solo cabins include Holland America, MSC and Virgin Voyages . While the price may not be as inexpensive as the double occupancy fare when traveling with someone else, these accommodations offer some savings over a typical solo fare.

Some lines often feature special deals on select sailings where the single supplement is waived or reduced. A knowledgeable travel agent specializing in cruises can assist in finding the best offers for solo travelers.

Kids cruise free promotions can help families save

If you're traveling with kids, many cruise lines – such as Holland America, MSC, Norwegian, Royal Caribbean, Disney and Princess – offer "kids sail free" promotions periodically throughout the year. You can also find discounted fares for the kids on select sailings. Regent Seven Seas Cruises has fares as low as $999 for children 17 and younger on a variety of select voyages whose regular fares are around $6,000 and up. This fare also includes unlimited shore excursions and all the benefits and perks of sailing with an all-inclusive luxury cruise line.

Food and beverage packages are another expense to consider

Table of breakfast overlooking the ocean

Once you determine your total cruise fare with the taxes, fees, port charges and gratuities, you'll need to budget for the additional expenses you'll have on the ship – and these extras can add up quickly. Meals at specialty dining venues , alcoholic drinks and other beverages may not be covered in the basic cruise fare. You'll also have to pay for room service on most ships.

You can purchase specialty dining, beverage and Wi-Fi packages before or during your cruise. These packages offer savings over purchasing everything individually – and it's best to buy them once you book your cruise, as they're typically cheaper to purchase before you board the ship. For an example of the savings, Royal Caribbean offers up to a 40% discount with a dining package. This package includes reduced pricing for children ages 6 to 12, while kids 5 and younger eat for free. The cruise line's unlimited dining package also offers discounts on bottles of wine.

In addition to specialty dining venues that charge a flat fee – usually between $30 to $50 – there are also restaurants that charge as much as $75 or more for dinner. Other venues feature a la carte menus with sushi, bar food and even steakhouses that price out individual courses. Some of these may not include gratuity, so that's another add-on. If you decide to dine at any of these spots – and they're not included in your package – you'll have to budget for them in the total cruise price. Enticing dessert items in the gelato and ice cream shops on some ships also come with a price, including Coco's and Dolce Gelato on Norwegian or MSC's Venchi.

There are endless options when considering beverage packages, too, so you need choose what fits best with your interests and budget. Some of the package options are only for nonalcoholic drinks like fountain sodas, sparkling waters and coffees, while premium or deluxe beverage packages cover beer, wine and cocktails, so they are more expensive. Depending on the cruise line, most premium packages will usually cover drinks up to $15, but many craft cocktails on cruise ships can be quite expensive, costing much more, especially if you request a call brand for the liquor. If you have the premium package and want to splurge on the fancy beverage, you'll have to pay the difference.

Other lines have packages that cover top-shelf beverages of up to $20 each and include wine, large bottles of water and soda, and other perks. You'll need to budget around $85 per person per day for this option – and an additional 18% gratuity. This type of package can add up to quite a bit of money on a seven-day cruise or longer.

For additional savings, look into bundle pricing that includes specialty dining, Wi-Fi, photos and more. Purchasing them together may be more cost-effective. For example, Holland America offers a "Have It All" package that encompasses a shore excursion credit, a signature beverage package (including the service charge), one evening of specialty dining and Wi-Fi. If you're sailing on longer cruises of 10 to 21 days or more, the benefits increase. The line estimates savings of 50% when you purchase this bundle.

While these packages may not always work out in your favor, you'll at least know what your dining, imbibing, excursions, Wi-Fi and even additional activities on the cruise will cost.

Additional costs on a cruise ship

Cruisers will also incur additional fees from excursions, fitness classes, spa treatments, access to thermal spa rooms, babysitting services, ship tours, wine tastings, cocktail demonstrations, cooking classes, laundry services, and some entertainment venues and activities on the ship – such as Norwegian's racetrack and Carnival's first roller coaster at sea, BOLT. See some of the more popular added costs you'll want to consider below.

Wi-Fi access

If you need Wi-Fi during the cruise, that's another cost to factor into the total price. Here are two examples of pricing for internet plans for two cruise lines.

Carnival offers three options for Wi-Fi, using Starlink. The basic Social Wi-Fi Plan gives you access certain social media channels like Facebook Messenger, Instagram, Twitter, WhatsApp and more starting at $12.75 per day per person. The cost increases to $17 per day per person with the Value Wi-Fi Plan. This option gives you access to your email and to sites for weather, news, finance and more. It does not support Skype or music and video streaming services like Spotify and Netflix during your cruise.

Carnival's Premium Wi-Fi Plan starts at $18.70 per person per day and offers speeds up to three times faster than the Value plan. With this plan you can make Zoom calls and use Skype. For all three of these plans, you can save 15% off the total price if you book in advance of your trip.

Celebrity also uses Starlink. The line's "Always Included" fare includes basic internet, a classic drink package and gratuities. If you don't book that fare, Wi-Fi plans range from $20 per day for basic service to premium Wi-Fi at $35 per day.

  • Shore excursions

If you're traveling to far-flung or new destinations, you'll want to book shore excursions. Cruise lines recommend that you book excursions directly with them rather than hiring an independent tour company or operator, but it can be more expensive to book tours through the cruise line.

However, if you experienced a delay on an independent tour and couldn't get back to the ship on time, there's a chance you could get left behind if you're not on a ship-sponsored tour. If you decide to go with a private tour guide, be sure to book an excursion where you'll arrive back at the ship with plenty of time to spare before the vessel departs for the next destination. Most tour operators in busy cruise ports work with the cruise ship schedules all the time, so you should be fine with a reputable independent guide.

Some trips last an entire day or are once-in-a-lifetime adventures like dog-sledding on a glacier in Alaska or taking a helicopter ride in Iceland. These types of excursions can be costly, ranging anywhere from hundreds to even thousands of dollars.

If these types of experiences are not in your budget, then look for historic walking or panoramic driving tours. These excursions are shorter in duration and typically the least expensive tours available on the cruise. Most of these types of tours will cost less than $100. And, of course, there are always other options available that range between the lower and higher price range of excursions.

If your ship is docked directly in the town or city, then you'll be able to explore off the ship on your own for free. Some cruise lines also offer complimentary shuttle buses into town, or a round-trip ride for a nominal fee, if it's not within walking distance of the ship. That's another less expensive option for you to sightsee, shop or grab lunch in town.

Transportation

Transportation is another expense that's often overlooked in the total cost of a cruise. Consider if you'll be driving or flying to the cruise port. If you're driving, you'll have to pay for gas and parking at the port – and maybe a hotel the night before the cruise, depending on when you arrive and when your ship is scheduled to set sail. Don't forget the meals or beverages you'll purchase on the way.

If you're flying to the port, especially on a long-distance flight, it's best to come in a day early. In that case, you'll also have to pay for a hotel, transfers from the airport to the hotel and then a transfer (private hire, Uber or cab) to the ship's terminal. There will also be meals to budget for while you're in town before the cruise and a ride back to the airport after the cruise.

Souvenirs or forgotten items

Don't forget to account for purchases on the ship. Items that you forgot to bring from home will be more expensive on the ship. It's also easy to run up the bill when buying souvenirs for yourself or the kids. It's a good idea to periodically check your bill online or with guest services to see the current balance. You can keep a running tab of what you've billed to your stateroom – and also make sure that the charges are correct.

Cruise pricing checklist

To sum it up, here's a checklist of major items that will help you to compare costs across cruise lines and tally up the total cost of a cruise:

  • Base cruise price
  • Taxes, fees, gratuities and port expenses
  • Specialty dining
  • Beverage package
  • Optional activities
  • Miscellaneous expenses
  • Air or ground travel to the port
  • Hotel prior to embarking

If you don't want to budget for all the individual expenses related to a cruise – and you don't need the over-the-top entertainment of a larger cruise ship – consider booking a mostly all-inclusive or fully all-inclusive cruise with a luxury cruise line . These cruise lines include almost everything in your cruise fare.

Mostly all-inclusive cruises

One option for a mostly all-inclusive cruise is Viking Ocean Cruises . The line's nine all-veranda ocean-going vessels accommodate 930 passengers – and all of Viking's ships feature the same categories of staterooms and suites, dining, lounges, and entertainment venues across the fleet. The ships offer an immersive cultural curriculum on board with regional dishes, destination performances and enrichment lectures.

Viking's fares include veranda accommodations, port taxes and fees, free Wi-Fi, access to The Nordic Spa and fitness center, 24-hour room service, ground transportation (if you book airfare with Viking), and one complimentary excursion in each port. You'll also have complimentary alternative dining options and free beer, wine and soft drinks with lunch and dinner on board the ship. Specialty coffees, teas and bottled water are available 24 hours a day at no extra charge. Guests are also invited to a welcome cocktail party and farewell reception.

If you like to have an aperitif before your evening meal or an after-dinner cocktail, those beverages will be at an additional cost. You'll also need to budget for any optional shore excursions that are not included in the fare.

Keep in mind that Viking is an adults-only cruise line, so children younger than 18 are not permitted.

Silversea Cruises , Regent Seven Seas and Seabourn Cruise Line boast all-inclusive luxury experiences with shipwide amenities such as ocean-facing suites, butlers, premium spirits, fully stocked in-suite bars, no tipping and complimentary dining at world-class restaurants.

Additional perks with Regent Seven Seas include complimentary shore excursions, free two- or three-night land programs, a free one-night hotel stay before the cruise departure, transfers from the airport to the ship, and business class or economy airfare, depending on the destination.

Silversea offers door-to-door arrangements where everything is handled by the cruise line. You can also opt for a port-to-port all-inclusive rate if you prefer to make your own travel arrangements. If you're on one of the cruise line's expedition cruises, fares will include a pre- or post-cruise hotel stay. All Silversea fares cover a selection of complimentary shore excursions in each port.

If you're interested in an even smaller ship – and are sailing to the Caribbean or Mediterranean – SeaDream Yacht Club features an intimate luxury experience on its two 56-stateroom yachts. The fares include top-notch cuisine, open bar and gratuities, complimentary daily yoga, access to water sports activities and nightly movies under the stars.

How much does a luxury cruise cost for two?

If you want to go on a mostly adults-only luxury ship, what can you expect to pay for two people? This will depend on the ship, where you want to sail and for how long – and what amenities are included in the fare.

For a seven-night cruise in the Baltic region in June with Regent Seven Seas, an all-inclusive fare with suite accommodations is $12,540 ($6,270 per person). There are also additional perks available, depending on where you book the cruise. Some of the extras include a cash-back offer, a two-category upgrade and shipboard credit.

Silversea has a similar itinerary in June, and the fare also comes with added perks for $13,860 for two people ($6,930 per person) in suite accommodations.

While the price tag may seem high, compare the total cost with the base fare on a larger cruise ship and then add in all the extras.

The bottom line

The average cost of a cruise is all over the map – and there are many variables to consider. Hiring a cruise specialist to navigate the rough waters may be your best option. Cruise specialists are also privy to special deals and incentives that you may not be able to access on your own.

Travel agents can also advise you of promotions that may include free specialty dining, beverage packages, complimentary Wi-Fi, shore excursions, discounts on solo and family travel, and more. This approach will save you the hassle of searching online or calling the individual cruise companies to check on what specials are available.

If you'd rather have one price with everything included so there's little room for surprises at the end of the trip, consider a mostly or fully all-inclusive cruise fare. If you don't need waterslides for the kids, big Broadway shows and high-tech entertainment, opt for a cruise on a small luxury line.

When doing the math and comparing the costs, you might be surprised how similar in price cruising with a larger mass-market cruise line and a smaller luxury line can be. In the end, your decision will come down to your personal preferences and what you value most for your cruise vacation.

A 7-day cruise can be a great family vacation option, but it can also be expensive. How much you’ll end up paying will depend on the cruise line and the specific cruise itinerary. Here is some information on what to expect cost-wise for a 7-day cruise. Many people are confused and asking how much is a 7 day cruise ? Prices can vary greatly by many different factors.

How How Much Does a Cruise Cost? (Really)

I’m regularly asked to help people get a cruise deal , but most people don’t understand the different cruise fares and the overall cost of a cruise and cruise vacation.

How Much Does a Cruise Cost?

Find The Right Cruise For You

I sold cruises at different times and one of the training scenarios was to pair the person with the type of car they drove. As funny as this may sound at first, it kind of still holds true in some respects. A modern-day cruise aboard a mega ship is like a floating resort at sea. A person who drives an economy car might be fine with a budget cruise line. However, A person driving a luxury car will surely have different expectations. Cruising, in general, is all very impressive, but it is often the small details that as a whole that often help differentiate each cruise product’s overall customer experience.

The resort comparison is probably better for today’s comparison. So do you want a budget cruise line to keep your cruise costs lower where many luxury items are optional, or do you want to look at luxury cruise lines where most things are included?

The average cost of a 7-day cruise is $1,500 per person based on double occupancy. However, this price can range from $700 to $4,000 per person, depending on the cruise line and specific itinerary. For example, a 7-day Caribbean cruise on a luxury cruise line like Regent Seven Seas might cost around $4,000 per person, while a similar cruise on a more budget-friendly cruise line like Carnival could cost as little as $700 per person.

So, how much you’ll pay for a 7-day cruise depends on your preferences and budget. If you’re looking for a luxurious experience with all the bells and whistles, you can expect to pay on the high end of the spectrum. However, if you’re more interested in a budget-friendly option, there are plenty of great cruises available that won’t break the bank.

A Solo cabin aboard Holland America Line’s MS Koningsdam

Cruising Solo

Unfortunately, cruises are often priced and sold based on double occupancy. They may have sales where they reduce the fare of the second person, and this is where working with a great travel agent who specializes in cruises can help. They can help solo cruises find these deals and also let you know about them when they happen.

The good news is cruise lines like Norwegian Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises , Royal Caribbean, and Cunard now offer single occupancy or solo cabins. I think this offering will continue to grow with other cruise lines.

Norwegian Cruise Line has been a leader in this, offering single cabins called Studios and even a connected area called the Studio Lounge of many of their ships just for solo cruisers. These are a great way to get away on a trip by yourself and not have to pay extra or be penalized.

Getting to the Ship

If you’re flying to your cruise port, be sure to budget for airfare . The average cost of a round-trip domestic flight to a major cruise port is around $300-$400. If you’re flying internationally, the cost will be higher.

In addition, you may also need to budget for transportation to and from the airport. The average cost of a taxi from the airport to the cruise port is around $50-$60. If you’re looking to save money, you can also take public transportation or rent a car.

If you taking a Southern Caribbean cruise you may have to fly to Puerto Rico to cruise out of the Port of San Juan. This has always been a port that offers easy access to many exotic Caribbean cruise itineraries for cruise lines. This ofcourse has to be factored in the cruise price if visiting this part of the World is a must.

So, before booking your cruise, be sure to factor in all the associated costs of getting there. This will help you ensure that you’re not surprised by any unexpected expenses down the road.

Hotel Door

Pre-Cruise Hotels

If you’re not traveling from close by, you may also need to budget for a pre-cruise hotel stay if you fly in the day before or stay overnight after your cruise is over. The average cost of a one-night stay in a hotel near a major cruise port is around $150-$200. So, if you’re traveling from far away, be sure to budget for at least one pre-cruise night in a hotel.

This way, you’ll be well-rested and ready to board your cruise ship !

Princess Cruises All-Inclusive Premier Package

Drinks Onboard

In addition to the cost of the cruise itself, you’ll also need to budget for drinks while onboard. Most cruise lines offer a la carte prices for alcoholic drinks, and the price can add up quickly.

For example, a cocktail might cost $10-$12, while a beer or glass of wine could cost around $6. So, if you plan on drinking a lot during your cruise, be sure to budget accordingly. Here is a sample drink menu from Carnival Cruise Line:

  • Beer: starting at $6.50 (mostly 16 ounces)
  • Wine by the glass: starting at $9.50
  • Mixed Drinks: $7.50 – $20.00
  • Specialty Cocktails: starting at $10.50 (excluding souvenir glassware and premium selections)
  • Soft Drinks: $2.75
  • Specialty Coffees: $2.50 – $4.25
  • Energy Drinks: $4.95
  • Water (San Benedetto bottled water and Coconut Water): $1.50 – $5.00

On the other hand, if you’re not a big drinker, you can probably get by with just a bit of spending money for tips and incidentals. In any case, it’s important to know what to expect before you set sail.

If you plan to drink often, consider your cruise line’s drink packages. Just be sure to consider the price and restrictions of the drink packages. The packages can be expensive so consider if it’s worth it. Most major cruise lines, such as Carnival cruise line, Royal Caribbean, and Norwegian cruise line, offer several types of drink and soda packages. Some have them just for specialty coffees.

So, before booking your cruise, be sure to factor in all the associated drinking costs while onboard. This will help you ensure that you’re not surprised by any unexpected expenses down the road.

River Cruise Tour

Shore Excursions

One of the best parts of a cruise is the opportunity to explore different ports of call. Most cruise lines offer a variety of shore excursions, from sightseeing tours to outdoor adventures. These excursions can be expensive, however, so it’s important to budget for them accordingly.

The average cost of a shore excursion is around $100 per person. However, this price can vary depending on the type of excursion and the port of call. For example, a snorkeling tour in the Caribbean might cost more than a city tour in Europe.

So, before booking your cruise, research the available shore excursions and budget accordingly. This will help you make the most of your vacation !

Food, Glorious Food, Back In Cruise Spotlight

Specialty Dining

Another great thing about cruising is the opportunity to sample different cuisines worldwide. Most cruise ships offer a variety of specialty dining options, from sushi bars to Italian trattorias. These dining experiences can be expensive, however, so it’s important to budget for them accordingly.

The average cost of a specialty dining experience is around $30-$40 per person. However, this price can vary depending on the type of restaurant. For example, a steakhouse on a luxury cruise ship might cost more than a casual restaurant on a budget-friendly cruise line.

So, before booking your cruise, research the available specialty dining options and budget accordingly. This will help you make the most of your vacation!

Tips are not mandatory, but they are customary.

The added expense of gratuities can often sneak up on people as tips for service staff. Tips are not mandatory, but they are customary and typically range from $10 to $12 per person daily. This fee is automatically added to your onboard expense account and can be paid upfront when you initially book your cruise.

Port Canaveral's Terminal 3 Parking Garage

Cruise Port Parking

If you’re driving to your cruise port, you’ll need to budget for parking fees. The average cost of parking at a cruise port is around $20-$25 per day. So, if you’re driving to your port, factor in this added expense. Some cruise terminals now offer Valet cruise parking which is a great option but, comes at an extra price for convenience.

Princess Cruises Takes You Into The Heart of Alaska

Cruise Tours

Prices for different types of cruises

Prices for different types of cruises vary widely, depending on the type of cruise, the destination, and the level of luxury. But generally, you can expect to pay anywhere from $200 to $5,000 per person for a cruise.

One tip is to try to calculate the price of the cruise on a per-day basis. When doing this, try to come up with an average total cost of a cruise from each of the different cruise lines you are considering.

This will give you a realistic view of the cruise prices. For example, That budget cruise might not be such a good deal when you add up all the extra costs or add-ons. You may find a better value with a different brand with a higher upfront cost, but you save more overall when the extras are included in the price.

How to save money on a cruise

There are a few ways to lower your overall cruise cost on cruises:

Many cruise lines offer discounts for early bookings and often offer cruises a year or more in advance. You may see many promotions during the year as the cruise gets closer, but the best price was almost always when it was first available to be booked.

Choose a less popular departure date or destination

This can save you up to 50% off the regular cruise rates. For example, booking a Caribbean cruise at certain times of the season can save you a lot. That same cruise priced at it’s highest in July can be had for much less if you are flexible when it’s much cheaper in the months of September, October, and November.

Guaranteed Category Cabins

Cruise lines will often offer a “guaranteed” category cabin. This means you can get a certain category type, such as an Interior cabin, Oceanview, or Balcony cabin, and the cruise line guarantees it.

These room types are often $100 cheaper per person. However, In exchange, the cruise line will ultimately pick your cabin location and final category. I have booked these several times, and it’s a great way to cut cruise costs if you don’t need a specific location and are flexible. Please note these are NOT always available on every sailing or cruise line.

Package Deals

These can be a great way to lower the overall cruise cost. Some cruise lines offer package deals that include airfare, hotel stays, and other extras. This can be a great way to cruise on a budget during your trip and have everything taken care of in one go.

Group Rates

Travel agents often have access to exclusive discounts and group cruise rates. They can help you find the best deal for your needs. If you’re willing to take a last-minute cruise, you can often get a great deal. Being flexible with your travel plans can save you a lot of money.

What’s included in the price

The price of a cruise includes transportation, accommodations, and most meals in the cruise fare. It also often includes activities and entertainment, as well as access to the ship’s facilities. Some cruise lines also offer special deals that include extras like airfare, hotel stays, or wine tastings.

Cunard Greeting

What’s not included in the price

The price of a cruise does not generally include airfare, ground transportation, or shore excursions. You will also need to budget for incidentals like tipping, souvenirs, and laundry. Some cruise lines offer all-inclusive packages that include these extras, but they tend to be more expensive. Cruise prices can vary so much in terms of what is an add-on and what is included.

Port St. Maarten

Port Fees and Taxes

Each cruise will come with port fees which are the cost for the ship to dock in a certain port. The port normally charges each passenger a fee, and this charge is included in the price of the cruise. These port fees are a fixed cost and can not be reduced or waived. So when you are booking a cruise, a 7-day cruise with more port visits will often cost more.

For example, a Western Caribbean cruise may have fewer ports and lower port fees overall compared to an Eastern Caribbean cruise. Some popular ports may also charge a higher fee than a less popular port. Each of these things may come into consideration when comparing cruise vacation prices.

MSC Seaside, Zip line

Onboard Spending

What you spend onboard can add up quickly, so it’s important to plan and know what to expect. Here are some of the most common expenses:

Alcoholic drinks and soft drinks can be expensive on a cruise ship, and many mainstream cruise lines charge a premium for drinks served in certain venues or specialty restaurants. Many passengers don’t look at the prices before ordering so having a drink package can be helpful.

Another great cruise tip is to limit your drinking while onboard and drink while visiting a port. What’s better than having a nice drink while overlooking the beach in Grand Cayman or

Cucina Del Capitano

Cruise Line Specialty Items and Dining

Most cruises come with breakfast, lunch, and dinner meals, coffee, and even snacks included in the basic cost of the cruise. However, They now offer specialty restaurants and even items ranging from coffee, desserts, and even pizzas. If you want room service this may be included at some times of the day but, many cruise lines now offer items for a fee or have a service fee. On more inclusive cruise room service and many items are included in the price of the cruise.

MSC Seaside, Arcade Games & Bowling

Onboard Cruise Activities

There are usually a lot of activities available on a cruise ship, and many of them come with a price tag. Some examples include spa treatments, escape rooms, bowling, and arcade games. Historically, the average price of a cruise has remained low for a very long time but, the optional extras and add-ons have continued to grow.

This often leads to guests being surprised at the total cost of the cruise when they get the final bill. This is why it’s nice to receive an onboard credit when booking the cruise to help offset some of these unforeseen extras once onboard.

submarine ride

If you want to explore the ports of call on your cruise, you’ll need to pay for tours. These can range from a simple bus tour to an all-day adventure zip-lining through the jungle. Shore excursion prices and the types of availability may differ from port to port. This can be a big consideration when booking a cruise.

For example, when taking a Caribbean cruise, an island tour and other options will be more affordable than most excursions offered on an Alaskan or European cruise , where the tours are often more expensive and enriching. Most port cities have taxis readily available to offer you a tour of the major sites to drive you from place to place. Be sure only to use the government licenses taxis and take precautions.

The nice thing about cruising is it allows you to experience the new places you visit and even do activities like hot air ballooning, snorkeling, diving in a submarine, boat rides and more.

Royal Caribbean Ships By Age

Which cruise line is right for you

The type of cruise you choose should be based on your budget and what you’re looking for in a vacation. If you’re looking for a family-friendly vacation with plenty of activities, a standard cruise is the best option.

If you’re interested in a themed vacation or want to explore a new destination, there are specialty cruises available for just about every interest.

River cruises are a great option if you want to experience a more intimate setting, while cruise tours are perfect for those who want to see multiple destinations in one trip. If money is no object, luxury cruises offer the ultimate in extravagance.

How To Book A Cruise

The best way to book a cruise is through a professional travel agent specializing in cruise travel. Travel agents are familiar with the different cruise lines and can help you choose the one that’s right for you. They can also often get you discounts and perks you wouldn’t be able to get on your own.

If you’re booking a cruise on your own, the best way to start is by researching online. Read reviews of different cruise lines and compare prices to find the best deal. Once you’ve found a cruise you’re interested in, call the cruise line or book online.

When To Book A Cruise

It’s generally best to book a cruise 6-12 months in advance. This will give you the widest selection of dates and itineraries. If you’re booking a last-minute cruise, you may be able to find some great deals, but you won’t have as many options to choose from.

What You Need To Know Before Booking A Cruise

Before booking a cruise, there are a few things you should keep in mind:

Your Budget

Cruises can be expensive, so it’s important to set a budget and stick to it. The advertised fare is not really what the cruise cost. Most advertisements do not include port fees and taxes, which are mandatory and can add hundreds per person to the overall cruise fare. Many people new to cruising often want to take a shorter cruise. However, the shorter cruises are often in higher demand and can cost more per day than a longer cruise.

Newer cruise ships may do a few short cruises occasionally, but, they normally do seven days or more. So I recommend a longer cruise if you want a better value on your cruise fare.

Viking Christmas Markets Review: Passau

Your Travel Dates

Be flexible with your travel dates to get the best price. The time of year and when you cruise can be a significant factor in the cruise price. One rule of thumb to follow is this.

If the kids are out of school, the cruise fare can be two to three times higher. So people may choose to take their kids out of school for a special vacation, or retired couples may choose to go on a cruise when kids are in school.

Sometimes being flexible can help earn extra onboard credit or help you lower your overall cruise costs.

Half Moon Cay

Your Destination

Choose a destination, and port stops that interest you and are within your budget. Where you choose to cruise can also be a major factor in your overall cruise fare. For example, You may be able to drive to Port Canaveral in FL or for Caribbean cruises.

You are already saving money compared to your fellow cruise passengers who may have to fly to the port. Carnival Cruises has focused on offering cruises closer to home for US cruisers.

They now have cruise ships home porting in ports all around the United States in locations like Port Canaveral, Port Galveston, Long Beach Cruise Terminal, and more.

Do some research on different cruise ships to find one that has the amenities and activities that you’re looking for. I try to get one of the cruise line’s newest ships. Cruise lines put the best of everything on their new flagship vessels.

This can often include interior design, cabin amenities, specialty restaurants, food options, entertainment, and more. Another thing to think about is the crew. Most new ships also have the best of the crew and officers onboard to deliver a prized experience.

If you’re looking to lower your overall cruise costs, you can often book an older ship with the same amenities that are in less demand compared to the newest ship and save money on the overall cruise cost.

a woman checking a world map

Your Travel Agent

If you’re using a travel agent , choose one specializing in booking cruises. The cruise lines now offer special training and certifications to agents who become experts in that specific cruise line. Look for these certifications as well as CLIA certifications.

Working with a good cruise-based agent can come with so many benefits. You  normally  don’t have to pay extra to worth with a personal travel agent. The cruise line pays them a commission after the sale, and you pay no more than you would if you booked directly with the cruise line.

An expert travel agent can offer your cruise tips , offer special cruise deals. These experts can advise you on the benefits of possibly spending just a few hundred dollars more. Many cruises ask questions like, is a balcony cabin worth it?

Are alcoholic beverages included? How good is the food in the main dining room? They can also help you have a seamless vacation and explain any extra transfer costs or fine print you need to know. They will also be waiting to help you book your next cruise.

How Much Does a Cruise Cost? (Total Cost)

J. Souza

Wondering how much a cruise really costs? Want to know exact figures so you know if you can afford it? This article will explain everything you need to know about the cost of a cruise vacation, including some “hidden” items.

cruise ships in portmiami, miami with virgin and royal caribbean

From the price of a cruise, the items that contribute to the cost, and the factors that can make a cruise cheaper or more expensive, we tackle it all in this in-depth guide .

Even though a cruise can be one of the most cost-effective vacations you can take, the price can vary wildly based on many factors. Here are just a few things that will contribute toward and effect the final cost:

  • The ship and cruise line
  • Type of cabin or suite
  • Destination and ports of call
  • Length of cruise
  • Services purchases onboard
  • Time of year
  • And a whole lot of other factors

What’s in this article

How much does a cruise cost on average.

The average cruise costs $237 per person per day, and that includes both fare and onboard spending.  You can see the breakdown later in this article.  The data was compiled from Carnival Corp. & plc and Royal Caribbean Group earnings numbers to average what passengers typically spent last year.

You can spend as little as $150 on a 3-day cruise deal or as much as 5 figures on a longer cruise with a palatial suite. That’s the cool thing about cruising. It’s all up to you. But remember, that’s just the cruise fare.  You still need to add in taxes and fees, and other expenses we will talk about here.

Related: Cruises you should avoid

On the average 7-day sailing with a mainstream cruise line a person will spend $1,300 – $2,000 . But stick around because we’re going to explain what that actually entails, and how that price can be drastically higher or a bit lower.

We gathered information from the biggest cruise companies in the world, that also happen to be public companies. We analyzed their quarterly earnings reports so we can see exactly how much cruise passengers are spending on these lines.

graph chart showing cruise cost on average throughout the year

What does the advertised cruise fare price even mean?

When you see that super low rate on a cruise, it’s important to know that the listed price is for ONE person and is usually for an interior room.   Double the price to get the actual rate for two people in a cabin and then consider the extra cost of a balcony stateroom, and THEN add in the taxes and fees to see what you actually need to pay to get on the ship.

And yes, even if you’re going on a cruise by yourself you will have to pay for the second person, usually.  More on the single supplement surcharge later.

What’s included in your cruise fare?

The cost of a cruise on mainstream lines typically includes your accommodations, meals (except for specialty dining), entertainment and activities on the ship, and transportation from port to port.

Some items that may not be included in the base cost of the cruise are cost of excursions,  airfare to and from the port of embarkation, ground transportation, travel insurance, and certain beverages.

Cruise cost compared by looking at 3 major companies

carnival cruise ships and royal caribbean ship in Nassau port

There are 3 cruise companies that make up over 75% or more of all cruise sailings in the world. These companies include: Carnival Corporation & plc, Royal Caribbean Group, and Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings. In this post we will focus on mainstream lines while mentioning some luxury cruise lines as well.

  • Carnival Corp. & plc – Probably the most prominent cruise line in people’s minds. The cruise operator has 9 brands under its belt that include names you might be familiar with: Carnival Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, Holland America Line, P&O Cruises, P&O Cruises Australia, Seabourn Cruise Line, Costa Cruises, AIDA Cruises, and Cunard. The brand currently has 90 ships in service
  • Royal Caribbean Group – This cruise holding company operates 3 lines: Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises, and Silversea Cruises . Royal Caribbean has a combined fleet of 64 ships .
  • Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings – This company also operates 3 cruise lines: Norwegian Cruise Line, Oceania Cruises, and Regent Seven Seas Cruises . 29 ships currently make up the entire company’s fleet.

As you can see, quite a few cruise lines fall under each cruise brand. We took the data from each of these 3 cruise operators (and all 183 cruise ships ) and detailed how much the average passenger spent in both cruise fare and onboard spending.

Related: What is the best cruise line?

Note: The numbers below reflect averages. Some of the luxury lines within a brand will skew the numbers higher, and the more mainstream budget-friendly lines will skew them lower. In the case of Norwegian, the averages are higher because of the luxury cruise lines within the company that make up a larger percentage of its total passengers than the other companies.

Still, these numbers give us actual figures as to what was paid by passengers to cruise lines according to the last 3-4 earnings reports.

Onboard spending includes anything purchased on the ship, in addition to services and beverage packages purchased before the cruise.

Carnival Corporation & plc:

Average amount passengers paid with Carnival last year

Royal Caribbean Group

Average amount passengers paid with Royal Caribbean Group last year

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings

Average amount passengers paid with Norwegian last year

Again, it should be noted that if you sail on a Norwegian Cruise Line ship the prices will more closely resemble the fares on Carnival and Royal Caribbean. But since NCLH as a company reports Oceania and Regent Seven Seas along with Norwegian Cruise Line ships the numbers will seem a little more inflated.

Any cruise deals below $120/day or even $100/day is considered a great buy.   You can even find rates cheaper from time to time, but that’s a good base line for budget travelers.

The numbers above give us a good baseline for the average cost to book a cruise, but there’s more to the equation.

What Impacts the Price of a Cruise?

loungers and umbrellas on pool deck of Carnival Horizon cruise ship

While the prices above are averages, here are some things that will change the final payment of your cruise.  We are still only talking about cruise fare and onboard spending here.  The rest will be covered later in this article.

  • Cabin Type .   A balcony stateroom can cost 2x – 3x more than an interior stateroom.  And suites can be double or more the cost of a balcony cabin.  Prices range wildly, but this is one of the biggest factors in the cost of your vacation.  A $600 interior room could be well over $1,000 for a balcony and over $2,500 for a suite.
  • Ship .  A newer ship will typically have higher fares and a more premium line like Princess or Celebrity will cost more than a Carnival cruise.  There’s also higher demand for the latest and greatest ships so cruise companies can charge a little more.  Within the same cruise line a newer ship can have a premium of 15% or more.
  • Destination .  The ports of call and destination of your cruise impact more than just the fare price.  Port fees at some locations are higher than others, and the ship size and number of passengers affect this as well.
  • Time of year .  I love to go on cruises in the “off-season”.  The months of September through November can see some excellent deals.  The summer months often see spikes in rates, as it’s a popular time of year to take sail.
  • Number of days .  Obviously, the longer your cruise the more you will spend.  This is why I like to look at the per/day cost of a cruise to see how good of a deal I am getting.

Examples of cruise prices by destination and dates

(prices for interior staterooms per person on 7 day cruises)

  • 7-Day Eastern Caribbean cruise in September – November: $278 – $789
  • 7-Day Western Caribbean cruise in June – August: $438 – $989
  • 7-Day Alaska cruise in June and July: $339 – $750
  • 7-Day Mediterranean cruise in April – May: $349 – $1,200
  • 7-Day Hawaii cruise in September – October: $482 – $2,049
  • 7-Day Canada/New England cruise in September – November: $459 – $879
  • 7-Day Mexico cruise in January – March: $269 – $569

Prices gathered from icruise.com for the collection of this data.

So, now that we have established a baseline for the fare cost, we can look at the rest of the factors to get an idea of the total cost of a cruise.

Taxes and Fees (Including Port Fees)

There’s no way around it.  Taxes and fees have to be paid to get on that ship.   This money doesn’t go to the cruise line, but it will be part of what you pay in order to get your ticket.

Some of the taxes go to the embarkation port and some to the country under which the ship is registered.   Cruise ships also pay state income taxes and even pay a tax on gambling revenue if sailing in certain waters.

Port fees will vary depending on the port itself.  These docking fees are based on the number of passengers as well as the size of the ship in gross tonnage.  While each port charges a different amount this will directly impact the cost of your cruise.

And if a port gets skipped because of bad weather you may notice a credit placed on your account as this fee did not have to be paid.

On most 7-day sailings the cost of taxes and fees will range from $100 to $200 per person.

Onboard Spending

two massage tables in the spa of a cruise ship

Onboard spending costs are all up to you. This means you can spend as much or as little as you would like, but chances are you will want to budget for some things like beverages, WiFi, or excursions.

Did you notice in the table above that onboard spending by cruise passengers is almost 75% the cost of the cruise fare itself?

With mainstream lines line Royal Caribbean, Carnival, Norwegian, and MSC Cruises you can expect to have to pay extra for some amenities.

What kind of extras are typically not included in the price of your cruise fare?  We listed some common services and amenities below:

Shore Excursions : Many cruise lines offer a variety of excursions and shore tours at each port of call, which can be a great way to see the sights and experience local culture.   Expect to spend anywhere from $45 to $150 for each excursion.  Of course, you can always explore a cruise port on your own for free if you want to save some money.

Beverages and specialty drinks : While some cruise lines offer unlimited soda and juice packages, alcohol and specialty drinks (such as smoothies and lattes) are usually not included in the base price of a cruise unless you’re sailing on a luxury line.  You can either buy a beverage package or buy the drinks individually on the ship.  Doing a little math will help determine if you need a drinks package or not.  The average drink package on a mainstream line can cost about $60 per person per day , but it depends on which package you choose.

Spa services : Cruise ships often have spas that offer a variety of treatments, such as massages, facials, and manicures. These services are usually not included in the base price of the cruise.  A 50-minute massage might cost anywhere from $130 to over $200 .

Specialty dining : Many cruise ships offer a variety of dining options, including specialty restaurants that serve cuisine from specific regions or have a particular theme.   These dining venues can range in cost from $40 to $80 per person.

Internet access : WiFi is available on all cruise ships today.   While the speeds you experience will vary, you can find a package just right for you.  Typically, you will have to buy WiFi for each device you want to connect to the internet, although bundle packages are sometimes available.  Around $12 -$25 per day is what you can expect to pay to stay connected at sea.  And this depends on how many devices you want connected and what kind of speeds you need.

Photos : Professional photographers are often on hand to take photos of passengers on the cruise.  The cost of these photos can range quite a bit.  Expect to pay anywhere from $25 to $50 for an 8×10 photo.  Packages are also increasingly available as well to save money and you can even buy the digital copies from the cruise line.

Souvenirs and onboard purchases : Cruise ships often have gift shops where you can purchase souvenirs, as well as other stores where you can buy items such as clothing, jewelry, and other items.  Who doesn’t love a model of the ship you’re sailing on, right?

  • Gratuities :  Paying some extra money to the hard workers on a cruise ship is always a good idea.  Most cruise lines will automatically add this to your bill.  You can expect this cost to be $15-$20 per day per person in your cabin, but don’t forget you can pay them extra if you would like as well.

how much do cruise tickets usually cost

The Single Supplement Charge

The single supplement surcharge is an extra fee that solo cruisers usually have to pay for a cabin on a cruise ship. It’s basically to make up for the fact that the cruise line can’t sell the other bed in the cabin to someone else. This money has to be made up somewhere.

The amount of the surcharge can vary a lot depending on the cruise line, the cabin type, and where you’re going. Some cruise lines might not charge the fee for certain cabins or certain sailings, so it’s worth checking with them to see what your options are.

Some cruise ships even have solo cabins, specifically designed for one person, but don’t think you’re getting a 50% off deal.  While you won’t have to pay the single supplemental surcharge these cabins have a premium price built in as well.

The other extra costs to consider

There are several costs that you may need to consider when planning a cruise vacation, including the cost of transportation to the port of departure. Some of the potential costs you may need to consider for getting to a cruise port include:

Airfare : If you are flying to the port of departure, you will need to pay for your airfare. Prices for airfare can vary greatly depending on where you are departing from, where you are going, and when you are traveling.

Ground transportation : If you are driving to the port of departure, you will need to pay for gasoline, tolls, and other costs associated with driving. If you are flying and need to get to the port from the airport, you may need to pay for a taxi or other ground transportation.

Parking fees : Ports charge a fee for parking your car while you are on your cruise.  This is the simplest and most convenient way to park if you’re driving to the port, but you can save a few dollars by parking with a 3rd party that will shuttle you to the cruise port.

Pre-cruise and post-cruise hotel stay : If you are arriving at the port city the day before your cruise departs, you may need to pay for a hotel stay.  Anytime you are flying to get to your cruise port I recommend getting a pre-cruise hotel.  This alleviates any stress related to getting to the cruise port on time and makes for a more leisurely day of embarkation.

What about all-inclusive cruise lines?

If you’re not a fan of paying a la cart for your cruise vacation and just want everything lumped together, you can opt for an all-inclusive cruise.  Some cruise lines that are considered all-inclusive include Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Seabourn Cruise Line, Silversea Cruises, and Viking.

All-inclusive cruises typically include the cost of your stateroom, meals, beverages (including alcohol), WiFi,  entertainment, and onboard activities in the base price of the cruise. Some lines may also include gratuities and shore excursions in the all-inclusive package as well.

It’s worth noting that each cruise line’s all-inclusive package may differ, so it’s a good idea to read the fine print and understand exactly what is and isn’t included before booking.

Tips for lowering the cost of your cruise

Book your cruise well in advance : Cruises often offer early bird discounts for passengers who book their trip several months or even a year in advance.

Look for sales and discounts : Cruise lines often offer promotions and discounts, especially during the off-peak season. Keep an eye out for these deals and you may be able to save a significant amount of money and get yourself a budget cruise.

Consider a shorter cruise : Shorter cruises typically cost less than longer ones, so if you’re looking to save money, consider opting for a 3-5 day cruise instead of a 7-14 day one.

Choose an inside cabin : Inside cabins are typically the most affordable option, and you’ll likely spend most of your time exploring the ship and ports anyway.  Check out our article on the  benefits of choosing an interior cabin here .  Although, completely ignore this point if you’re all about that private balcony (I’ll raise my hand).

  • Book your cruise during the off-peak season : Cruises are typically less expensive during the off-peak season, which is typically from late August to early December and from January to early March.
  • Consider a repositioning cruise : Repositioning cruises are offered when a ship is moving from one part of the world to another, usually at the start or end of a season. These cruises tend to be longer and may not visit as many ports, but they often offer discounted fares.  I’ve actually been on some 1 and 2 day repositioning cruises that were super cheap and a lot of fun.

Taking a cruise can be an amazing way to travel, but it’s important to consider all the costs involved. Money on a cruise is not limited to just the price of the ticket; there are also additional costs such as meals, drinks, and activities that will add up.

To find out how much a cruise will cost you, you might have to break out a calculator but we hope this guide helps give you a ballpark idea of the expenses.  We obviously think it’s worth it because that’s why we started Cruise Fever in the first place.  We LOVE cruising!

Cruises are a popular vacation option for many travelers, offering a unique blend of relaxation, adventure, and an opportunity to explore multiple destinations in one trip. The cost of a cruise varies significantly depending on a variety of factors, including the cruise line, the length of the voyage, the type of cabin selected, and the itinerary.

Understanding the nuances of cruise pricing can help potential travelers budget effectively for their sea journey. From the base fare to the onboard amenities and excursions, each element contributes to the overall expense. This variety allows cruising to be accessible for a wide range of budgets, from economical getaways to the most luxurious of seafaring experiences.

Now, Let’s Talk Dollars: How Much Does a Cruise Cost?

Cruise price breakdown: navigating the expenses.

Understanding the components of a cruise’s cost is key to planning your budget. Here’s what to expect:

Cruise Fare : The foundation of your cruising cost, encompassing accommodation, most meals, and entertainment. Fare ranges typically between $1,400 – $2,800 for a 7-night Caribbean cruise, influenced by travel timing and cruise line selection .

Gratuities : Standard gratuities charge for service staff can average between $200 – $300, calculated at approximately $14 – $20 per person daily.

Shore Excursions : Explore ports of call with various activities which can add $200 – $600 to overall expenses.

Drinks Package : Purchasing a drinks package for both alcoholic and premium non-alcoholic beverages can be a wise choice, usually costing between $50 – $100 per person, per day.

Specialty Dining : To experience specialty restaurants beyond the included dining options, additional fees average between $25 – $50 for each visit. Estimated budget for several dining experiences would be around $150 – $250.

Travel Insurance : Protect your vacation investment with a travel insurance policy, which may range from $100 – $200 for a week-long trip.

Flights and Transfers : Don’t forget to budget for flights to your departure port and transfers upon arrival. Prices widely vary based on location and seasonality.

Table: Cost Estimates for a Caribbean Cruise for Two

These are base estimates and can be adjusted based on your preferences and the cruise line chosen. Luxury lines like Regent Seven Seas or Cunard will command a higher fare but often include more amenities upfront, such as alcoholic beverages or excursions. In contrast, mainstream lines like Carnival Cruise or Norwegian Cruise Line present a lower base fare with more a la carte charges. When planning, consider what’s included and what will be additional to gauge the true cost of your cruise experience.

Smart Sailing: Tips to Keep Cruise Costs Low

1. book early or late.

Booking several months in advance often comes with early bird discounts, guaranteeing preferred cabins and sail dates while saving money. Conversely, snagging a last-minute deal on unsold cabins as the departure date nears can also offer considerable savings, albeit with less choice in cabin types and itineraries.

2. Travel During the Shoulder Season

Opt for the periods just before or after peak season, known as the shoulder season , to enjoy reduced fares. While weather conditions may be less optimal, the trade-off is lower prices and fewer crowds.

3. Choose Your Cabin Wisely

Interior cabins are budget-friendly as they come without a window or balcony. They’re a practical choice if the cabin is mainly for resting and you’ll spend most of your time elsewhere on the ship or at the ports.

4. Limit Onboard Spending

Creating a budget for onboard expenses helps prevent unplanned spending. Remember that while meals and basic entertainment are included, extras like alcoholic drinks, specialty dining, and spa treatments are not.

5. Bring Your Own Extras

Some cruise lines permit bringing certain items onboard, such as a bottle of wine, to cut down on beverage costs. Carrying a reusable water bottle can also help save on buying drinks aboard.

6. Plan Your Own Shore Excursions

You can usually find better rates when organizing shore excursions yourself rather than booking through the cruise line. Ensure you allow enough time to return to the ship before it sets sail.

7. Watch for Deals and Discounts

Be alert for promotions offering onboard credit, discounted excursions, and other perks. Some discounts may apply to seniors, military members, or returning customers.

8. Use a Travel Agent

A travel agent can provide exclusive offers and professional advice, assisting in finding a cruise that fits your budget without compromising the experience.

Anchoring Thoughts: Is a Cruise Worth the Cost?

Evaluating the value of a cruise encompasses several aspects:

  • Convenience: Cruises offer packaged experiences that might appeal to those seeking an all-inclusive vacation.
  • Variety: Aboard a ship, one might enjoy entertainment, meals, and accommodations in one location.
  • Pacing: They cater to those preferring a structured schedule over the flexibility of independent exploration.

Ultimately, the decision hinges on personal preferences in travel—whether the allure of cruising aligns with individual vacation aspirations.

  • How Much Does a Cruise Cost?

Estimating the cost for your cruise can be a bit tricky. The reason for this is the cruise lines have so many extra amenities, in addition to the major expenses and the all-inclusive-packages that they offer. Even those which are considered all-inclusive can still run an extra tab. With expensive spas, dining options, lounges, activities, and entertainment, you are already paying quite a bit. Throw in things like onshore adventures, Internet, and souvenirs, and it’s no wonder that the fee structure can be so confusing. But if you understand what is included in the cruise price and consider a few tips, then you can save money on your cruise .

A treasure chest filled with money standing at the beach.

Before you start with anything else, consider the cost of transportation to the cruise ship as the flights. Most cruises advertise less than $100 per person per day especially if you are going on a shorter cruise around the Caribbean. This is a great starting point for estimating your cost, but then you have to factor in any transportation fees. Remember that government fees and taxes are hardly ever included in this rate, and if you live far away from where the ship will embark and disembark, your total fare could be significantly more than the advertised price.

Transportation

In addition to flying or driving directly to the port, consider transfers between the ship and the airport. Even if you are simply taking a domestic cruise, you are still going to have to get yourself from the airport to the port and back. Now the cost for this obviously varies based on the cruise line itself. Some of them have bus transfers for people who are traveling alone or as a couple. But if you're going in a larger group then a taxi might actually be cheaper. If you are driving directly to the port, you have to factor in the cost of parking in lieu of the cost for a flight and transportation.

Start our FREE cruise price alerts to never miss a deal again.

Unless you specifically see that your cruise includes gratuities in the package deal, you're going to have to tip about $12 per person, for every day of the cruise. On certain cruise lines tipping is not optional, so be sure you have read the fine print. For bar bills they might add 10 to 15% and gratuities might be automatically included in your spa treatment.

Extra activities

Speaking of spas, be aware that taking advantage of sea-day activities or aerobics classes, or even just visiting the gym can come at an additional fee. While there are myriad activities you can do on a cruise, some of these may cost extra - including food. Many cruise lines offer fine dining alternative restaurants, but these may not be included in the cruise price.

On the note of food and drinks, if you drink any alcoholic beverages, understand that the cost for drinking on a cruise is going to add up quickly. You should expect to pay an average of $10 per drink depending on what you want to consume. Even something like soda or water can cost you about two dollars each. Some of the cruise lines will sell you a drink card so you can have unlimited bottled water and soda, or will include unlimited water and soft drinks in the all-inclusive package. However, if you want something beyond this or your cruise does not offer it, factor in that cost as well.

Shore excursions

The final detail you want to consider when estimating the cost of your cruise is the shore excursion. Wherever you make port, what is it you want to do? Walking tours or bus tours, cultural activities like visiting museums or taking classes, even renting a bike to explore on your own can come at an additional cost. And of course, if you would like to visit a restaurant or cafe while in port, be prepared to pay in the local currency or with your credit card (which may incur international fees).

Sometimes, cruise fares seem too good to be true. A multi-day cruise to the Caribbean for only a few hundred dollars per person? You might wonder how on Earth that’s possible. And you’d be right to be a little skeptical. The fact that cruises are some of the cheapest ways of traveling is not debatable, though. Often, however, the total price you’ll end up paying for a cruise is much higher than what’s advertised. So, how much does a cruise cost in reality?

While many cruise lines promote fares as low as $75 per person or even less, don’t be fooled by that. That may be the initial price, but that’ll only cover the absolute basics. A cruise filled with great food , some drinks and fun excursions will cost a bit more. Those are the add-ons, the price of which you’ll hardly ever see explicitly advertised.

If you wondering ‘how much does a cruise cost’, you need to take into account all the following factors, too. They all contribute to the total cruise price , the amount you’ll eventually end up spending.

5 Factors That Determine the Total Cruise Price

How Much Does a Cruise Cost?

1. The Advertised Cruise Price

This is the starting point when determining how much a cruise costs. It’s one of the few contributing factors of which you can find the price before you actually go on your cruise. However, the cruise fare varies greatly between cruise lines, cruise destinations and the type of cabin you choose (and a combination of those three).

You might find a cheap cruise deal for $50/night per person to regions like the Caribbean , which is typically the cheapest cruise destination. Other places, like Alaska or the Galapagos , can be much more expensive. Additionally, there’s also a huge price difference between inside and balcony cabins.

2. Flights, Transportation and Hotels Before and After

Budget for the costs of flights. Some cruise fares do include flights to and from the departure and arrival port(s), but that’s not really the norm. Chances are you’ll be the one responsible for getting to your port in time and at your own expense.

Other types of transportation to your port may include trains, subways and taxis. Those costs can vary greatly depending on where you are and how far you need to travel. If you’re driving yourself, keep in mind that leaving your vehicle at the cruise terminal can cost up to $30 per day.

Usually departure and arrival ports are interesting destinations, too. So, you might want to arrive a bit earlier and stay a little longer to explore that specific city. Consider this when trying to figure out how much a cruise costs.

3. Gratuities on Board

Tipping is an expense that’s often overlooked, causing many cruisers to exceed their budgets. If you’re not sailing with one of the high-end luxury cruise lines , it’s very likely you’ll be expected to tip for services. Sometimes, cruise lines even require tipping—make sure to read to fine print when booking.

On average, you should budget for $10-12 per person per day for gratuities on a cruise.

4. Alcohol and Specialty Restaurants

Besides flights, food and drinks might just be the biggest additional cost of going on a cruise. If you like your daily glass of wine, craft beer, cocktail or whiskey, this is an expense that could quite quickly increase your expenditure. For alcoholic drinks, you should expect to pay between $5 and $12 per drink. If you plan on partying a lot, it might be worth looking for cruise lines that have drink packages or even include beverages in their overall fare.

All-inclusive cruises are great because they include food for the duration of your cruise, often 24/7. Specialty restaurants might not be included, though, so if you’d like something else than the buffet, you’ll probably have to pay for that, too.

It’s worth noting that not drinking and just eating buffet food drastically reduces how much a cruise costs. Then again, it’s okay to have some fun, too, of course!

5. Excursions and Activities

Many cruises nowadays are about the destinations rather than focusing on on-board activities (even though they’re typically fantastic as well). There are usually several on-shore tour options available, most of which will require the payment of an extra fee. The cheapest options tend be basic walking tours, while there could also be more elaborate activities like helicopter rides, wine tastings and cooking classes.

If you’re not exploring by yourself, you should budget these shore excursions, too. Destinations are important and you won’t want to miss out on fun experiences.

Some Actual Numbers

The factual answer to the question how much does a cruise costs is given by Cruise Market Watch . They did a great breakdown of the average spending by a cruise passenger in 2018, the average of all cruise lines worldwide. This is a good starting point if you want to budget for a regular, not-too-fancy cruise to a typical destination.

Their numbers are the following. Note that they’re total numbers per person for the average cruise (not per day). Also note that this total does not include expenses related to flights, transportation or port hotels. It’s just the cruise itself, on average.

  • Cruise fare: $1,293
  • Casino and bar: $274
  • Shore excursions: $100
  • All other expenses on board, including gratuities: $75
  • Total cruise cost: $1,791

If you're new to cruising, you may wonder, how much is a Caribbean cruise?

The total cost of a cruise can vary depending on many factors, such as the departure port, itinerary, length, travel dates and the type of cabin booked. Additionally, the desired experience you're going for can influence the cost.

A luxury, all-inclusive cruise will cost significantly more, while a no-frills Caribbean cruise can be cheaper. Before booking, find out what considerations you should make to determine the cost of a Caribbean cruise.

Anticipated Caribbean cruise costs

As you research potential Caribbean cruise itineraries, consider the total cost. Most cruise lines only show the base price of each cruise, and the price you see is usually the cost per person per room (based on double occupancy).

In addition to the base price, you can expect to pay taxes and port fees. Planning for all costs in advance can help you avoid surprises .

Costs to consider when planning a Caribbean cruise

For the sake of your budget, keep in mind that the base rate you see advertised isn't the full price you'll pay when you book a cruise. Below are some other expenses to be aware of as you plan your Caribbean cruise adventure:

Taxes and port fees

The advertised base price doesn't include taxes or port fees.

Exact prices vary depending on cruise length, destinations and other factors, but you should expect to pay an additional amount for these costs.

Some cruise lines allow you to prepay for gratuities when booking, but it's still an added expense, no matter when you pay,

If you don't prepay, many cruise lines will automatically bill gratuities to your onboard account during your cruise. Be sure to research policies and costs before booking your cruise so you're not surprised at the end of your trip.

Cabin upgrades

The price that you see advertised is for the cheapest available option, which is likely an interior cabin.

If you want to book a cabin with an ocean view, a balcony or any other upgrades, expect to pay an upcharge. However, you can obtain a more affordable rate by booking a standard room.

Premium meals

When you book a cruise, various food offerings are included in the price you pay.

Typically you'll have access to buffets, dining room offerings and casual poolside fare. However, you may wish to splurge on premium beverages or dine at specialty restaurants. If that's the case, expect to budget for these additional costs.

It can be pricey to drink on a cruise. If you're paying per drink, expect to spend a lot of money.

Most cruise lines offer alcoholic drink packages that include specific types of beverages for a set price. You'll want to plan for this extra cost if you plan to drink on your vacation.

Booking shore excursions can be a great way to participate in local experiences at each port of call.

While booking through the cruise operator is convenient, it may cost more than exploring the port on your own. Plan to pay for any tours or activities you book, many of which start at $100 or more for a half-day adventure.

Travel costs

Unless you live in the port city you're departing from, you'll want to plan for extra travel costs. First, consider whether you can drive to the port or if you'll need to fly.

In addition to transit costs, you may need to budget for a hotel stay at your departure port. Those with travel credit cards may want to consider redeeming their rewards to cover the cost of a hotel or plane ticket.

How to save money on the cost of a Caribbean cruise

Look for deals.

If you want to score a reasonable Caribbean cruise price, look for deals.

Booking a cruise well in advance is one way to get a better price. Another way is to look for last-minute cruise deals . Many cruise lines discount prices a month or two before sailing to fill empty cabins.

Having the right credit card in your wallet may help you save money on a cruise, and cruise line-specific credit cards can be a good fit for brand loyalists.

Once you have collected enough points, you can redeem them for room upgrades, onboard credit, companion fares or even a discounted sailing.

Loyalty programs

Many cruise lines have free loyalty programs that can offer valuable benefits. Becoming a member can earn discounts or qualify for upgrades or other perks that make your next cruise more enjoyable.

These programs are best for loyal cruise-goers, but even first-time cruisers may find value in joining.

How Much Does a Cruise Ship Cost? Pricing and Budgeting Tips

How Much Does a Cruise Ship Cost

Cruises. Ah, it’s funny how just thinking about the term makes you feel tingly on the inside. A kaleidoscope of images comes to mind: the shimmering sea stretched out as far as the eye can see, endless buffets that would put your grandmother’s Sunday feasts to shame, and sunset dances on the deck. Ahoy, relaxation! They’re the stuff of dreams, these floating oases of luxury. They promise adventure, romance, and – most importantly – an escape from the onslaught of your boss’s emails.

The popularity of these sea-faring vacations is as vast as the ocean they sail on. The industry has been thriving for years, with each new ship and major cruise lines like Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, and the Seven Seas regularly launching new ships. But, let’s face it, the cost of cruising can often seem as mysterious as the Bermuda Triangle.

Why does a ticket to paradise seem to cost an arm and a leg? And is it possible to embark on this journey without having to sell your beloved pet Fluffy or auction off your collection of rare baseball cards? These questions, my dear reader, are exactly what we’re going to address today.

Welcome aboard! Fasten your seatbelts (or should we say lifejackets?). This isn’t just another blog post; it’s your comprehensive guide to understanding the depths of how much a cruise ship costs and how to navigate the sometimes choppy waters of budgeting.

Are Cruise Trips Expensive?

Now, you might be thinking, “Cruise trips? how much does a cruise ship cost? Those floating resorts? They must be as expensive as a unicorn made out of diamonds!” Well, not so fast, my friend. Cruise ships cost, ship cost is a curious creature. It’s not quite as mythical as you might imagine, yet not as straightforward as buying a burger, either.

Cruise pricing is a bit like an iceberg. What you see on the surface – the base cruise fare – is only a fraction of the whole picture. It’s a complex beast, affected by many factors, much like trying to choose the best ice cream flavor at a fancy gelato shop.

The first big influencer is the most expensive, the cruise ship and the line itself. You see, not every cruise line is the same. There are mass-market cruise lines like Royal Caribbean and Carnival Corporation that offer a more wallet-friendly experience. There are also high-end cruise lines like Regent Seven Seas, where extravagance is the order of the day. These lines provide a world-class experience, with ticket prices that would make even a billionaire blink.

Clean cruise ship room

The size and age of the cruise ships also play a pivotal role. The rule of thumb is that newer and larger cruise ships will tend to cost more . After all, they boast a plethora of onboard features, from Broadway-style shows to ice-skating rinks and rock-climbing walls. Older cruise ships, though not as flashy, can offer a cost-effective option without sacrificing comfort or fun.

But let’s not forget the timing . Just like buying plane tickets, when you book your cruise fare can drastically affect the total cost. Planning to sail in the peak season? Be prepared to shell out some extra clams.

Now, what does your ticket price usually include? At the risk of sounding like an infomercial, here it goes- your accommodation (sorry, Fluffy has to stay at home), meals at the main dining venues, access to entertainment, and most of the ship’s facilities, like swimming pools and fitness centers. It also covers the crew members who are at your service around the clock, ensuring your voyage is as smooth as a dolphin’s back.

Top Cruise Lines and Their Average Costs

In this part of our journey, we’re going to hop aboard some of the older ships of the most popular cruise lines out there and delve into their treasure chests to find out what they typically charge, and what those prices get you. So, ready to compare the costs of these floating kingdoms? Full speed ahead!

Cruise ship on the sea

Royal Caribbean International

Royal Caribbean International, the fleet known for its Oasis-class ships, makes you feel like royalty, but without the need for a king’s ransom. Their ships are some of the largest and most innovative in the industry, boasting amenities such as zip lines, ice-skating rinks, and even surf simulators. They are the Clark Gable of the seas: suave, sophisticated, and ever-so-slightly showy.

Depending on the cabin class, the location, and the time of year, the typical cost of a 7-night cruise can range from $700 to over $2000 per person . This includes meals, entertainment, and use of the aforementioned wild and wonderful amenities. Watch out, though! Extras like the drinks package , special dining venues, and shore excursions could have your wallet crying out for mercy if you’re not careful.

Carnival Cruise Line

Carnival Cruise Line is like that fun uncle who turns every family gathering into a party. Known as ‘The Fun Ships’, their cruises are packed with activities, comedy shows, and nightlife to keep even the most energetic passengers entertained.

Carnival cruises typically cost less than Royal Caribbean, with an average 7-night trip running between $500 to $1500 per person. Again, this fluctuates based on factors like ship size, sailing date, and itinerary. The base fare includes food, some drinks, and activities. But remember, experiences like the thrill-inducing SkyRide or the luxurious Cloud 9 Spa are add-ons that will add up!

Norwegian Cruise Line

The Norwegian Cruise Line is the laid-back cousin of the cruise family. Their ‘Freestyle Cruising’ concept is all about flexibility: there are no set dining times, no enforced dress codes, and no fixed schedule. It’s the ‘come as you are’ party of the high seas!

For a 7-night journey, you could be looking at $600 to $2000 per person . As usual, meals, entertainment, and most onboard activities are included. But be aware, that some of the fancier dining options, spa treatments, and your midnight Margaritas at the bar aren’t part of the deal.

Princess Cruises

Princess Cruises is your sophisticated aunt who enjoys the finer things in life. This cruise line is all about luxury, offering gourmet dining and Broadway-style shows.

A week-long trip on one of the most expensive cruise ships these grand dames of the ocean can cost between $700 and $2,500 per person . As always, the cost varies depending on various factors. Onboard amenities are included in the price, but the luxurious extras like wine-tasting experiences or a balcony suite will require a fatter wallet.

Disney Cruise Line

Finally, we arrive at the Disney Cruise Line , the Peter Pan of cruises – where kids and adults can immerse themselves in magic, and no one ever really has to grow up. Disney delivers top-notch entertainment (think Disney musicals and first-run movies), character experiences, and themed dining.

A 7-night cruise on one of these magical vessels usually costs anywhere between $1000 and $3500 per person. The cost includes Disney’s one-of-a-kind entertainment , meals, and access to most onboard activities. However, Cinderella’s fairy godmother won’t be covering the cost of things like alcoholic beverages, specialty dining, or off-ship excursions. Remember, even in Neverland, some things never come for free!

Additional Costs to Consider

All right, brace yourself, matey, because we’re about to go down the rabbit hole of “ How much does a cruise ship cost ? Or as I like to call them: the pirates lurking in the financial seas, ready to plunder your pockets when you least expect it!

Family of four playing on the shore

Shore excursions

First up on our “watch out!” list is shore excursions. These off-ship adventures can be as diverse as diving into the turquoise Caribbean waters or exploring ancient ruins in Rome. While these experiences are more thrilling than a parrot on your shoulder, they can cost anywhere from $30 to several hundred dollars per activity. These are not included in your cruise fare and trust me, the price tags can be as steep as a ship’s plank!

Specialty Dining

Next, let’s talk about food, glorious food! While the main dining venues are part of your expensive cruise ship, fare, specialty dining can lure you in like a siren’s song. Picture this: a romantic steak dinner under the stars, or a sushi feast prepared by a master chef. Sounds delightful, right? Well, this luxury comes with a cost, usually ranging from $15 to $100 per person. Remember, every sushi roll adds to the roll of bills!

Onboard activities

Then there are those irresistible onboard activities that aren’t covered by your cruise fare. Want to experience a blissful massage at the ship’s spa? That’ll cost you. Fancy trying your luck at the onboard casino? It’s not just about gambling money, it’s about spending it too. You never know when these expenses will mumble “free!”

Don’t forget about gratuities. They are not just a fancy way of saying ‘tips’. Daily gratuities are frequently added to your account by cruise companies, and they are given to the hard-working staff members who make your cruise experience enjoyable. This could be around $12 to $20 per person , per day. So don’t be that grumpy old sea dog who forgets to factor this in!

Travel insurance

Sure, insurance may seem like an unnecessary expense, but when you’re cruising, it’s as essential as a life jacket. Your journey may be disrupted by medical problems, travel cancellations, or even missing bags. The cost of travel insurance varies based on the coverage and your age but think of it as a safety net for the high seas.

Transportation to and From the port

Finally, how are you going to get to and from the port? Unless you’re lucky enough to live next to one, you’re probably going to have to budget for transportation costs . Flights, car rentals, hotels – it all adds to the total cost of your cruise trip.

How to Save on Your Cruise Trip

Oh-ho, you want to know the secret to keep your treasure chest full while cruising, eh? Well, grab your compass and eyepiece, and let’s chart a course toward some savvy cruise savings!

Finding Deals and Discounts

Person holding a credit card while purchasing online

The cruise industry is as fond of deals and discounts as a seagull is of chips. With a keen eye and some smart internet surfing, you can snag some fantastic bargains. Websites like Expedia or Cruise.com often have hot deals. Signing up for newsletters from cruise lines and cruise deal sites can also lead you to some unexpected gold mines of discounts.

Timing Your Booking

Having coffee while booking a cruise trip

Just like the tides, cruise pricing has its ebbs and flows. Generally, the best times to book a cheaper trip are during “wave season” (January to March) when the cruise industry offers enticing deals, or in the off-peak seasons when fewer vacationers are setting sail. Another trick of the trade is to book during “shoulder seasons,” which are the periods just before or after the high season. While the weather may be fluctuating, so are your savings!

Early Bird or Last Minute?

There’s an age-old debate among sea-faring savers: to book early or to book last minute? Booking well in advance ( think 6-18 months before your departure ) can help you secure the best staterooms and get an early bird discount. On the other hand, if you’re more of a spontaneous adventurer, last-minute bookings ( usually within 60 days of departure ) can yield deep discounts, as cruise lines scramble to fill empty cabins. The risk, of course, is that you may have to compromise on cabin choice and itinerary.

Loyalty Programs

Person holding a voucher

Finally, don’t forget to explore the benefits of cruise line loyalty programs. Just like a well-traveled sea turtle, returning to the same cruise line can have its rewards. Most cruise lines have reward programs that offer repeat cruisers perks like discounted fares, priority boarding, free Wi-Fi, or even complimentary upgrades. It’s like being part of an exclusive sailor’s club, where the more you sail, the more you save!

Family walking on the beach

Aye, we’ve sailed through the murky waters of cruise pricing, navigated through the labyrinth of hidden costs, and hoisted the Jolly Roger of savvy saving strategies. We’ve discovered that answering “How much does a cruise ship cost?” is a bit like asking how long is a piece of rope. It all depends on factors like the cruise line, the type of cabin, the itinerary, the time of year, and whether you’re a fan of shore excursions or specialty dining.

Just remember, cruising isn’t just a vacation. It’s an experience like no other! It’s the thrill of waking up to a new destination each morning, dining under the stars in the middle of the ocean, and enjoying world-class entertainment all in one place. Cruise trips are like your favorite beachside buffet – they come with a spread of options, you just need to pick what suits your taste and budget.

So, whether you’re a budget-conscious Jack Sparrow or a lavish Captain Hook, there’s a cruise out there with your name on it. With so many cruise lines, ships, and itineraries to choose from, the world is truly your oyster – or rather, your ocean. Don’t be put off by the price tag, for there’s always a deal to be found, a discount to be had, or a budgeting trick to keep your cruise costs from heading into the Bermuda Triangle.

Remember, the adventure is out there; it’s just a cruise deal away! So get out there, fellow sea dogs, and find your perfect cruise. The horizon is calling. Fair winds and following seas, my friends!

How much does a 7-day cruise cost per person?

Ah, the classic week-long cruise! The cost of this salty escape can vary quite a bit, just like the Caribbean Sea’s varying shades of blue. Generally, you might be looking at anything from $500 to $5,000 per person, depending on factors like cruise line, cabin type, itinerary, and time of year. Keep an eye out for those cruise deals – they’re as coveted as a treasure map!

How much does a 3-day cruise cost?

A quick 3-day cruise, or what I like to call a “sprint on the sea,” can be a pretty affordable way to dip your toes in the water of cruising. Generally, you could find deals on expensive cruise ships ranging from $200 to $1000 per person. But remember, that’s just the ticket price. Don’t forget about the lurking additional costs like gratuities, drinks packages, and shore excursions!

Do you pay per day for a cruise?

In a way, yes! Cruise fares are usually quoted per person, based on double occupancy of a cabin, and calculated on a per-day basis. However, the price you see also includes a boatload (pun intended) of inclusions, like meals, entertainment, and access to amenities. Just remember, the rate might not include the sneaky additional costs we’ve been chatting about.

Is food free on cruises?

This is one of my favorite subjects: food! In most cases, food in the main dining venues , the buffet, and some casual spots onboard are included in your cruise fare. Think endless buffets, poolside burgers, and elegant main dining room dinners. However, specialty dining venues – like that scrumptious steakhouse or delightful sushi spot – will likely cost you extra. So you might not need to guard your dinner from pirates, but you will need to guard your wallet from those additional costs!

What You Need to Know - Costs of a Cruise Ship Ticket (2024)

W ith all of the new cruise ships (and even some cruise lines!) over the past two years, you may be considering a cruise. Taking a cruise can be an effective and affordable way to see multiple destinations – you will travel to different ports of call as you stay in one room with no need to unpack.

However, many travelers are worried about the costs of a cruise ship ticket. They may seem to be expensive. Luckily, many cruise lines and sailings are very affordable. Because most (but definitely not all) of the costs are included, they can be an easy thing to budget for as well.

So, how much does a cruise ship ticket cost? This post will help you understand cruise prices on some of the most popular, mainstream cruise lines, as well as what affects the price of a cruise. There are also some optional add-ons that can add to the expense (as well as the fun!). For instance, a Virgin Voyages cruise fare includes WiFi, gratuities, and dining at any of the specialty restaurants at no additional cost.

Typically, the base cruise fare includes things like your stateroom, meals (in the buffet, main dining room, and other included venues), government taxes, port fees, and most activities on board the ship.

Note that we are only looking at mainstream lines, not luxury cruise lines. Prices and inclusions are always subject to change.

How Much Does a Cruise Ship Ticket Cost?

What affects the price of a cruise.

There are so many factors that go into the price of a cruise. First, you’ll want to decide which cruise line you want to sail on. There are many benefits to each line If you don’t have one in mind, you should do some research in advance to find out what activities, amenities, itineraries, and general atmosphere are on the cruise lines you are considering.

The cruise line that you sail on is probably the biggest driver of cost. Some are most expensive than others. However, the inclusions may be different, so look at the add-ons in addition to the base cost to really get a good idea of what you’ll be spending.

The itinerary that you are sailing on is another major price driver. This includes the ports of call that you’ll be visiting and the number of days of your sailing. In general, if you want to save some money on your cruise vacation, one easy option is to decrease the length of the cruise.

The type of stateroom that you choose will also affect the price. Expect to pay more for suites and balcony staterooms. The most cost-effective option of the cabin types is typically an interior stateroom.

Some cruise lines may offer you the opportunity to bid on a higher-level stateroom. It can be a great way to try for a suite or other concierge room that may have otherwise been out of your price range. To maximize your chances of getting the bid accepted, however, you’ll want to follow the cruise line’s recommendations. That won’t necessarily give you the best deal though.

Another option to save money on your stateroom is to book a GTY stateroom (guaranteed). In this case, you’ll book your room without knowing the exact category or location. You are guaranteed a minimum category and can save money with this option.

Add-ons To Your Cruise Price

It’s also important to understand what things can add to the cost of your sailing. Some of these are entirely optional, while others really aren’t. Be sure to have an idea of these costs so you can budget for them accurately.

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is optional, but it is a good idea, especially for an expensive trip. This is an extra charge, and you can usually either purchase it on your own or through your cruise line. Check around for coverages and don’t just automatically go for the lowest price. Often, the cruise insurance won’t include coverage for flights purchased on your own.

Port Transportation

Whether you are driving or flying, you’ll either need to park at the port or get there somehow. Some cruise lines will offer an option airport shuttle to the cruise port, but you’ll typically have to pay extra. In some cases, this will be the cheapest option, but that’s not always the case. Regardless of what you choose, you’ll need to include this cost in your vacation budget

Drinks packages or individual alcoholic drinks

Alcoholic beverages are not included with the cost of your cruise unless you’ve purchased an unlimited beverage package. Some cruise lines, like Disney Cruise Line, include soda, but others charge extra for some non-alcoholic drinks. It’s up to you to decide whether a package is worth it but plan on spending some money for drinks if you plan to have any soft drinks, specialty coffees, or alcohol during your cruise.

Not all cruise lines offer unlimited beverage packages. Disney offers a beer or wine package, and Virgin Voyages offers a “bar tab”. Regardless, these can be the best deal if you will take advantage of them.

Shore excursions

Every port of call will have some fun shore excursions that you can consider booking. Cruise lines offer these, or some guests choose to book them independently. Just remember that if you book on your own, it’s entirely your responsibility to make sure you get back to the ship on time.

Shore excursions vary in price, depending on the activity. Some, like a helicopter ride, can be quite expensive, while others, like sightseeing tours, are more affordable. European and Alaskan excursions can be costly, so you’ll want to research before booking so you aren’t surprised.

Spa treatments

Spa services on a cruise ship can be a wonderful splurge and luxury. These are not included in the cost of your cruise ship ticket, so if you do plan to visit the onboard spa or salon, be sure to understand the costs before committing.

Specialty restaurants

While most of the main dining rooms on cruise ships offer excellent food and service, sometimes it’s nice to visit some of the specialty restaurants on board. These often come with an upcharge, although they are complimentary on Virgin Voyages where there is no main dining room. Some cruise lines may have a package where you can prepurchase from one to unlimited signature dining.

Gratuities are typically an additional charge on top of your cruise fare. Usually, you’ll tip individually when purchasing beverages or for room service. Then, you can leave a bigger tip for your server team and stateroom host.

Some cruise lines allow you to prepay your gratuities, which can definitely make things easier to budget. You can always add on at the end for excellent service. Virgin Voyages includes gratuities in the total price, so you don’t have to worry about them unless you’d like to add on.

Cruising can be a great way to unplug and relax. However, sometimes you do need internet access to stay in touch with the real world. While WiFi at sea isn’t always great, it definitely has improved over the years. You can sometimes purchase a full cruise package and a daily package, which is a great option if you don’t need it for the entire sailing.

Answered: How Much Does a Carnival Cruise Cost?

When it comes to cruising, Carnival Cruise Line is among the lowest-priced options in the industry. Whether you’re wanting a quick getaway or you want to go on a longer trip, you’ll find that the cruise line has some of the best fares you’ll find.

Carnival ship sailing from Miami

So how much does a Carnival cruise cost? What you’ll pay will vary widely depending on the specifics of your cruise. Cruise for a week on the newest ship in the fleet? Obviously, you should expect to pay more than a quick 3-day getaway on an older ship.

Even so, we have some data on what you can expect to pay no matter which cruise you select to give you a better idea of what you’ll pay to sail with Carnival.

What Goes Into the Cost to Cruise With Carnival

Before we get into the actual prices that you will pay, it’s helpful to understand what goes into the price of your cruise. These factors can drastically alter what you pay by hundreds of even thousands of dollars.

Of course, the type of cabin that you sail on Carnival will have a big impact on what you pay. Interior cabins — which sit on the inside of the ship and have no windows — are the least expensive rooms that you will find. From there, the prices rise for oceanview, balcony rooms, and suites. So you can pay thousands more for the exact same cruise if you sail in the nicest rooms compared to the least expensive.

But Carnival has more than four different room options. Newer ships have a number of special cabin types like Cloud 9 cabins (near the spa) and Havana staterooms. These rooms will have special décor and features like access to exclusive areas such as private pools. They will also carry a higher price tag.

Just like cabins, cruise ships will also see different costs. As a rule of thumb, the newer the ship, the higher the price you can expect to pay. However, that doesn’t mean every trip aboard that newer ship will be more expensive than every trip on an older one.

Still, in general, if you’re wanting to sail on the newest ships that also have the most to do, then expect to pay a bit more.

For example, take a July 2023 cruise aboard Carnival Celebration (the line’s newest ship) from Miami. Here, the cruise fare for a six-day trip in an interior cabin runs $759 per person.

A trip 6-day trip aboard Carnival Horizon (a ship built in 2017), leaving the same time of year from the exact same port costs $679 per person for an interior cabin — or about $80 less.

Time of Year

Finally, the last major factor in what you’ll pay to cruise on Carnival is the time of year you sail. The same trip departing at different points of the year will have drastically different prices.

The easy rule of thumb is that Carnival’s prices are cheaper when school is in session and more expensive during breaks in the school year. As a family-oriented cruise line, more demand when school is out means higher prices.

Let’s take that same trip aboard Carnival Celebration that departs for six days. If you sail in July, then the cost for an interior cabin starts at $759 per person. But the exact same itinerary costs just $449 per person if sailing in September. That’s $310 per person less.

Other Costs to Consider

how much do cruise tickets usually cost

While the cost of your cruise will vary widely based on the ship, time of year, and the cabin you choose, there are also some more costs that you should keep in mind. These costs won’t vary as much from cruise to cruise, but they still impact your bottom line.

Port Fees/Taxes

One considerable expense on your cruise will be the fees and taxes that are tacked onto the cruise fare. These will vary based on the cost of your trip and also the ports you sail from and visit. However, for most cruises they run between $100-$200 per person. Unfortunately, there isn’t any way that you can avoid these fees; they are added in with your cruise fare that you pay.

Onboard Spending

One area that you do have a lot of power over what you spend is with onboard spending. This category includes everything from drinks onboard to casino gambling to spa services and more. Technically you could sail the entire cruise and not spend a dime on the ship, but that’s not realistic for most people. Still, what’s spent on the ship will vary widely from person to person. On average, Carnival Corporation (the parent of Carnival Cruise Line, Princess and others) reports that a passenger spends about $100 per person, per day on their ships.

In cruising, gratuities are a fact of life. Yes, technically they are optional in that you can go down to Guest Services and have them removed from you account if there is a problem with service. However, for the vast majority of people, the gratuity charges — which go to people like the waitstaff and your room steward — are just a fact of life. Carnival charges $14.50 per person per day for gratuities on its trips ($16.50 per person per day for suites).

Getting to Port

Finally, don’t forget to factor in the cost it takes to get to port to set sail on your cruise. If you are flying in, then you’ll have to purchase airfare, plus a hotel if flying in the night before. As well, don’t forget to factor in transportation to the cruise port. Driving in for your cruise? It’s definitely more convenient, but don’t forget that you’ll have to pay for parking while you’re gone.

With all these items in mind, what can you expect to pay to sail on Carnival? We have a cost breakdown below…

What You Can Expect to Pay to Sail Carnival

As mentioned, your cost to sail on Carnival (or any cruise line) can vary widely based on your trip specifics. That’s why we’ve broken down the cost to sail on Carnival into three different categories — a budget cruise, an average cruise, and a high-end trip. This will give you a better idea of what you’ll pay based on your specifics.

Cost of a Budget Cruise on Carnival

For a budget cruise, we assume you are taking a cruise during the off-season for 3-5 days and staying in an interior cabin on an older ship. This gets you on the ship and having a fun vacation for a more affordable price than what many will spend.

One example cruise we found a 4-day cruise aboard Carnival Radiance , departing Long Beach in late February . It offers the following pricing for an interior cabin and is a good representation of what you can expect when looking for an inexpensive cruise aboard Carnival:

Keep in mind this estimate doesn’t include your transportation to the port. But it gives you a good idea of what you’d spend to cruise on a budget. Here, the cost works out to about $140 per person, per day with all the costs included.

Cost of an Average Cruise on Carnival

While there is no such thing as an “average” cruise given all the variables, for this mid-tier vacation, we’re assuming a 7-day trip in a balcony cabin aboard a newer (but not the newest) ship in the fleet during the summer. As well, we assume that you spend a little more on board than someone would on a budget vacation.

The pricing below is for a 7-day cruise aboard Carnival Vista in a balcony cabin , sailing from Galveston in April .

Here with the upgrade to the balcony cabin, a longer cruise, and a newer ship, you can see that the cost of the cruise jumps considerably. But one thing to keep in mind is that a large portion of this estimate is onboard spending where you have the most control over what you’ll spend.

Cost of a High-End Cruise on Carnival

Finally, let’s consider what you’d pay for a high-end cruise on Carnival. Here, we are assuming a passenger staying in a suite aboard the newest ship and sailing at the peak of the summer season. As well, we assume a higher level of onboard spending on things like drinks, specialty restaurants and the spa.

The pricing below is for a 7-day cruise aboard Carnival Celebration in a suite cabin , leaving in July from Miami .

Here, the price jumps considerably with a new ship, higher-tier cabin, and sailing in the peak of the summer season. For that more luxurious experience, you end up paying about $425 per person, per day.

How Much Does a Carnival Cruise Cost?

As you can see, there is no set cost on what you can pay to cruise. Want to cruise for cheap and only spend a few hundred per person? That’s possible. Want to go all out, stay in the nicest cabins on the newest ships? It will cost considerably more.

In general, however, we think you’re best off estimating around $200-$300 per person, per day for a cruise on Carnival when all expenses are factored in.

In fact, in public investment filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Carnival Corporation (which encompasses Carnival and other cruise lines) shows an average cruise fare per day of around $150 per person and average onboard spending of around $100 per day — for a total of roughly $250 per day.

But it should be clear that what you pay can vary widely around that average depending on the sort of cruise you want to take.

What about sales on Carnival?

Head to the Carnival website, and you’ll no doubt see that they are running a special sale. That’s because these sales go year-round. And while they might be tweaked occasionally, it usually doesn’t lead to big swings in the price for the cruise. So it’s unlikely that you’ll look one day and see a price that’s drastically less (or more) than the day before.

That said, yes, occasionally there are special offers or prices — especially if you’re a VIFP member (Carnival’s loyalty program) with high status. But in general, we suggest not letting sale offers dictate when you decide to buy.

What about the cost of third or fourth passengers?

Sailing with a family? Then the pricing gets a little different. Above, we’ve accounted for two passengers in the cabin. In that case, both passengers pay the same cruise fare. Add a third or fourth person to the room and it’s slightly different.

In this case, the fare for the third person is drastically reduced — sometimes up to 70-80% the fare paid by the first two passengers. Still, they will have to pay the full share of port fees and gratuities.

Even so, sailing with a third or fourth passengers is among the best deals in travel.

How much does a 7-day cruise cost per person?

Even if we restrict ourselves to a seven-night trip, the price might range from a few hundred dollars to more than $10,000. Not to mention other fees such as travel and activities in ports of call . Here is a rundown of what to consider to get an estimate of how much a cruise costs.

The cruise line influences the pricing

The cruise company you pick, like automobile manufacturers, may have a big influence on the cruise ticket you'll spend for a 7-night vacation. Norwegian Cruise Line , Carnival Cruise Line , and Royal Caribbean International will give an average pricing that should match most budgets.

These popular lines include affordable American cruise lines , which often offer extremely low rates but can see prices rise if you choose to sail in a more costly cabin. Naturally, major cruise lines don't include as much in their cruise tickets. They like to allow the traveler to choose whatever extras, such as alcoholic drinks, Wi-Fi, shore excursions , and so on, to purchase in addition to the cruise ticket. It's worth noting that cruise operators nearly usually charge for a double occupancy cruise cabin. Some ships provide studio cabins, but if you're traveling alone, expect to pay for a second passenger whether you have one or not.

How Much Is a Cruise for 7 Nights?

Most cruise lines charge between $400 and $4,000 for a 7-night Caribbean trip in a balcony stateroom. Remember that these cruise costs are only estimates, and that prices can vary greatly based on the cabin style, time of year, number of individuals in the room, as well as cabin placement. If you're not sure where to begin when it comes to selecting a cruise, CruiseBooking.com will be a great asset to work with during the cruise planning stage. A travel agency like CruiseBooking.com can not only assist you in selecting the correct cruise line, but they can also save you cash and even provide you with extra onboard amenities.

Premium and luxury cruise lines, such as Princess Cruises , Celestyal Cruises , Celebrity Cruises , and Holland America Line , will almost certainly charge more, but they frequently offer more in their cruise fare. Furthermore, you may be able to discover more opulent accommodations to pick from.

Image of a cruise, cabin, or stateroom

The average price of your 7-day cruise will be heavily influenced by whether you choose an inside cabin, a balcony, or a suite. Inside rooms are likely to be less expensive than balcony rooms, just as a tiny automobile is likely to be less expensive than a full-size sedan. Suites will raise the price even more.

On most ships, there are four types of cabins:

  • Room with an ocean view
  • Suite: Each ship may offer different levels of suites depending on the cruise line. Suites usually also include additional onboard amenities.

A balcony cabin is frequently the greatest bargain since it gives more living space and a separate veranda without breaking the bank for most individuals.

Also Check: What Kind of Cruise Travel Insurance Do You Need?

Time of cruise

  • When you choose to sail might also have an influence on finding the greatest bargains. Typically, lower pricing may be obtained during hurricane season, when there is less demand for a cruise.
  • Furthermore, cooler weather is a fantastic opportunity to acquire a decent deal. Shoulder season is at the beginning or conclusion of a cruise season when demand is low, generally due to less-than-ideal weather.
  • Higher rates frequently follow popular vacation seasons, such as summer or Christmas. Peak-season cruises are often more expensive than off-season cruises.

Consider the demand for that time of year and compare costs earlier and later in the season to determine whether you may save a lot of money.

Ports of departure

A picture of the port of Miami

It's no secret that cruise itineraries have several departure ports . When it comes to the Caribbean, Florida alone has six ports: Port of Miami, Jacksonville, Port Canaveral, Port Everglades (Fort Lauderdale), Tampa, and Port of Palm Beach. But we must not overlook cities outside of Florida, such as New Orleans, Alabama, Charleston, Galveston, and South Carolina. Cruises from departure locations with older ships are often less costly.

Our best advice is to engage with a professional travel agent to help you sort through all of your possibilities. There are so many variables to consider that a travel professional may assist in simplifying the process while avoiding errors along the way.

If the smallest amount you can afford for a 7-day cruise is just not feasible, you may always opt for a shorter trip to assist reduce the whole holiday cost.

Onboard spending on a cruise encompasses various expenses beyond the initial ticket price. These expenses are not included in a cruise cost:

  • Port Fees and Taxes: Often charged per cruiser, covering costs associated with port usage.
  • Ship Operations: Involves ship maintenance, fuel, payroll, and other operational expenses.
  • Dining: Specialty restaurants, beverages beyond basic offerings.
  • Activities: Excursions, spa services, fitness classes.
  • Shopping: Souvenirs, duty-free items.
  • Entertainment: Shows, casinos, onboard events.
  • Internet and Communication : Wi-Fi services.
  • Onboard Credit: Some cruise packages include onboard credit that passengers can use for various expenses during the cruise.
  • Cash Considerations: While many expenses are billed to the cabin, having some cash can be useful for tipping, small purchases in ports, or other personal preferences.

Gratuities on a cruise refer to the customary tips provided to cruise ship staff for their services. Typically charged per person daily, these gratuities cover various onboard services, including cabin steward, dining room staff, and other service personnel. The amounts vary but often range from $10 to $15 per person per day. Some cruise lines automatically add these gratuities to passengers' onboard accounts, while others allow guests to adjust or prepay them. Passengers must know the cruise line's gratuity policy and consider budgeting for these tips as part of the overall cost. Additionally, some luxury cruises may include gratuities in the upfront fare. Understanding and adhering to the cruise line's gratuity practices contribute to a positive and seamless cruise experience for passengers and crew members.

The average cruise cost for two people in 2024 can vary based on factors such as cruise line, duration, cabin type, and destination. As per the provided search results, the average price for a seven-day cruise is around $1,500 per person, totaling $3,000 for a couple. It's essential to note that this is a general estimate, and actual costs may differ.

Additionally, guests often spend extra on onboard expenses such as drinks, excursions, specialty dining, and gratuities. On average, guests may spend around $680 on these extras, adding $1,360 for a couple.

Factors influencing costs include:

  • The cruise line's reputation
  • The ship's amenities
  • The chosen cabin category (inside, oceanview, balcony, or suite)
  • The cruise itinerary

Luxury cruise lines and longer itineraries tend to have higher costs. It's advisable to check with specific cruise lines, travel agencies, or online platforms for the most accurate and up-to-date pricing based on individual preferences and requirements.

Other Fees & Extra Costs You Will Have To Pay For Before Setting Sail On a Cruise

When looking for all-inclusive best cruise deals , it's essential to consider various fees and extra costs that may arise before setting sail. Here are some common ones to keep in mind:

1. Cruise Fare: The cruise fare is the base cost of your ticket, which covers accommodation, meals, and most onboard activities. The fare varies based on the cruise line, ship, cabin type, and itinerary.

2. Port Taxes and Fees: These charges are levied by the ports and local authorities and are usually included in the overall cruise fare. They cover the use of port facilities and services.

3. Gratuities or Service Charges: Most cruise lines add an automatic daily gratuity or service charge to your onboard account. This fee is distributed among service staff, such as cabin stewards, waitstaff, and housekeeping. The amount can vary, but it is often around $10 to $15 per person per day.

4. Excursions: Shore excursions are organized activities and tours at each port of call. These can include guided city tours, water sports, cultural experiences, and more. Excursions typically have an additional cost and vary depending on the activity and destination.

5. Specialty Dining: While cruise ships offer complimentary dining options, some specialty restaurants or dining venues may have an extra fee. These specialty venues often offer gourmet cuisine or unique dining experiences, and the additional charges can range from a few dollars to a significant amount.

6. Beverages: Non-alcoholic beverages like water, coffee, and tea are usually included in the cruise fare. However, alcoholic beverages, soda, bottled water, specialty coffees, and other drinks often incur additional charges. Some cruise lines offer beverage packages that provide unlimited drinks for a fixed fee.

7. Spa and Salon Services: Cruise ships feature spas, salons, and fitness centers offering various services such as massages, facials, hair styling, and fitness classes. These services generally come at an extra cost, which can vary.

8. Wi-Fi and Internet Access: While some cruise lines offer limited complimentary internet access, faster or unlimited packages often involve an additional fee. The cost for internet access can vary based on the cruise line and the duration of your trip.

9. Onboard Activities and Entertainment: While many onboard activities are included in the cruise fare, some entertainment options may have additional fees. These include premium theater shows, casinos, specialty classes (e.g., art, dance, cooking), and sports activities like rock climbing or go-karting.

10. Onboard Shopping: Cruise ships have shops and boutiques to purchase clothing, accessories, souvenirs, and duty-free items. These purchases are not included in the cruise fare and will incur extra costs.

It's essential to review the specific details and terms your chosen cruise line provides to understand all potential fees and extra costs before embarking on your journey.

1. Book Early: Take advantage of early booking discounts and promotions. Cruise lines often offer reduced fares and added perks for booking in advance.

2. Be Flexible with Travel Dates: Consider traveling during the off-peak or shoulder seasons when prices are typically lower. Avoiding holidays and school vacation periods can help you secure better deals.

3. Research Multiple Cruise Lines: Compare prices, itineraries, and offerings from different cruise lines. Each company has its own pricing structure and promotions, so researching multiple options can help you find the best value for your money.

4. Opt for Inside Cabins or Lower Deck Rooms: Cabins with a view or balcony tend to be more expensive. Choosing an inside cabin or a room on a lower deck can significantly lower your overall cruise cost while still providing a comfortable place to rest.

5. Avoid Costly Excursions: While shore excursions can enhance your experience, they can also be expensive. Consider exploring ports of call independently or researching cheaper alternatives, such as local transportation or self-guided tours.

6. Set a Budget for Onboard Spending: Determine how much you're willing to spend on extras like specialty dining, beverages, spa services, and shopping. Having a budget in mind helps you avoid overspending and allows you to prioritize where you want to allocate your funds.

7. Take Advantage of Drink Packages: If you enjoy alcoholic or specialty beverages, consider purchasing a drink package . Cruise lines often offer packages that include unlimited drinks for a fixed price, which can be more cost-effective if you plan to indulge.

8. Bring Your Own Non-Alcoholic Beverages: Most cruise lines allow guests to bring a limited amount of non-alcoholic beverages onboard. Packing bottled water, soda, or juice can save you from purchasing these items at inflated prices on the ship.

9. Research Port Parking Options: If you're driving to the departure port, compare parking rates at different facilities. Some off-site parking lots near the port offer discounted rates and shuttle services, which can be more affordable than parking directly at the cruise terminal.

10. Monitor Onboard Expenses: Regularly check your onboard account to keep track of your spending. Reviewing your charges allows you to catch any billing errors and helps you stay within your budget.

Remember, saving money on a cruise doesn't mean compromising the overall experience. By being mindful of your expenses and making strategic choices, you can enjoy a fantastic cruise vacation while staying within your budget.

Is it cheaper to buy a drinks package on board? Here's what cruise passengers should know.

how much do cruise tickets usually cost

A latte in the morning here, a piña colada by the pool there. On a cruise, ordering drinks can rack up a steep bill before you know it.

Though beverages like water, regular coffee, iced tea and lemonade are generally included in cruise fares, others cost extra. That’s where drink packages come in handy.

The optional add-ons broaden the range of beverages you can order without worrying about incurring charges each time. But they aren’t always worth it, and it can be cheaper to quench your thirst a la carte.

“What I tell clients is: Do the math on it,” said Rusty Pickett, a travel adviser and owner of Shellback Cruises.

What do cruise drink packages include?

“Each cruise line has a different package system,” Pickett said. The packages typically range from more limited soda or coffee packages to those that cover a wide range of alcohol and other drinks.

Carnival offers a Bottomless Bubbles package that includes sodas and juice. The line’s Cheers! package includes those, plus spirits, beer and wine by the glass priced at $20 or less, specialty coffee and more (guests can order only one drink at a time and are limited to 15 alcoholic drinks in 24 hours). Carnival also offers wine-specific packages.

Be sure to read the fine print, too, because there are often restrictions. On Royal Caribbean International ships, for example, beverage packages exclude drinks served in licensed Starbucks stores.

How much do cruise drink packages cost?

Beverage packages are typically priced per person, per day and sold for the duration of a cruise. Starting prices vary but can range from $10 to $15 for soda and specialty coffee packages to upward of $100 for those that include alcohol. Pickett also noted that a number of lines have raised drink package prices in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The aforementioned Cheers!, Carnival's most comprehensive package, starts at $59.95 per person, per day, while the Bottomless Bubbles package starts at $6.95 for kids and $9.50 for adults. During a recent cruise on the line’s newest ship, Jubilee , cocktails at new venues Dr.Inks, Ph.D., and The Golden Mermaid were priced at $14 a la carte, plus an 18% gratuity charge. Beverage packages generally include gratuities, Pickett said.

The most I racked up in a single day on Jubilee – for two lattes at the ship's JavaBlue Cafe and Marina Bar; two bottles of water in my stateroom; and one cocktail at the Marina Bar that night (plus additional gratuities I added) – was $34.86.

“When (clients) want to talk it through, it's usually about how much you drink per day,” said Valerie Dorsey, a franchise owner and travel adviser at Cruise Planners. “And if you're only going to have one or two drinks, even at $15 a drink, it's still cheaper than buying a $100-a-day package.”

Mainstream cruise lines may offer lower prices if guests purchase a package advance, according to Dorsey (luxury lines tend to include more in their fares, including drinks). Operators may also bundle them as part of other offers.

Even if not for cost savings, Pickett and Dorsey both said some travelers are drawn to drink packages for the convenience. “They're willing to pay money for not being nickeled-and-dimed when they go up to the bar,” Pickett said.

Does everyone in the cabin need to get the drink package?

Often, all guests of legal drinking age in the same stateroom are required to purchase a drink package if any guest in the cabin buys one, including the Cheers! package and Royal Caribbean's Deluxe Beverage Package .

Can I buy a drink package midcruise?

Even if you don't buy a drink package beforehand, you're not out of luck. Passengers may be able to buy them after they board, depending on when they make the purchase.

Royal Caribbean, for instance, sells drink packages on the first or second day of cruises four nights or longer; for sailings three nights or less, they're sold only on the first day. Celebrity Cruises (also part of Royal Caribbean Group), meanwhile, sells them up until three days before the end of a cruise.

Prices would be prorated on a per-day basis.

Can I bring my own drinks on a cruise?

Yes, depending on what it is. Beer and hard liquor are not allowed , but guests can bring wine or champagne to enjoy during their sailing – though Dorsey warned they will probably have to pay a corkage fee if they want to drink them outside their cabin.

For example, Princess Cruises charges $20 “should guests wish to consume their wine or champagne in the ship’s public areas,” according to its passage contract.

Guests may also be able to bring non-alcoholic drinks like bottled water, sodas and milk, but policies vary by line.

Dorsey also noted that if guests don’t mind going without espresso-based drinks or cocktails, they can opt not to buy a drink package at all. “I say to clients, ‘You don't have to put up extra money on a cruise if you don't want to.’ ”

March Madness tickets: How much does it cost to attend NCAA tournament?

March Madness is one of the biggest sporting events of the year, but how much does it cost to go to one of the 67 games of the NCAA Basketball Tournament?

Bailey Bassett

Kyle Filipkowski, Zach Edey, Rob Dillingham, Dalton Knecht, Jamal Shead all together. State Farm Stadium is the background. March Madness logo 2024 in the front. Tickets and dollar signs all around the graphic.

March Madness is the sporting event that many fans consider to be the best in the world. Sixty-eight teams battle it out in an effort to be crowned national champions. It is a massive tournament that takes place over multiple weeks.

Because of that, there are plenty of opportunities for fans to catch the madness in person. In this article, we will look at ticket prices for every round of the NCAA Basketball Tournament .

March Madness schedule

Selection Sunday has passed, and the field is officially set for March Madness . There were a lot of questionable decisions by the selection committee, but regardless, we are here, and 2024's Big Dance this year is expected to be one of the most crazy in recent memory. College basketball was stacked with talent, and a deep league means that there are tons of teams capable of winning it all.

That starts with the First Four. Eight teams have to play in a play-in game to make the 64-team field. On Tuesday, March 19, Wagner plays Howard at 6:40 p.m. ET. Colorado State will also take on Virginia at 9:10 p.m. ET. The following day will see Grambling vs. Montana State at 6:40 p.m. ET, followed by Colorado against Boise State at 9:10 p.m. ET.

After the field of 64 teams is finalized, the Round of 64 will take place over two days on March 21 and 22. Each day will consist of 16 games with non-stop action. The Round of 32 will then be on March 23 and 24, which is followed by the Sweet 16 on March 28 and 29.

The eight remaining teams play on the Elite Eight on March 30 and 31, and the Final Four is on April 6. Finally, the National Championship Game is on April 8.

March Madness ticket prices

UConn Huskies center Donovan Clingan and the rest of the NCAA Tournament March Madness field

The First Four will take place in Dayton, Ohio, at UD Arena. Tickets for this portion of the tournament are the cheapest, as prices only rise the deeper into March Madness we get.  First Four tickets range from $42-500, although the average price is around the $100 mark, according to Ticketmaster.

There are plenty of seats cheaper than $100, too. But of course, the First Four is only at one location, so it may be harder to make that trip on short notice than it will be for the other rounds if you do not live close to UD Arena.

The first and second rounds will be at eight different venues. These include Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, Spectrum Center in Charlotte, North Carolina, Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana, CHI Health Center in Omaha, Nebraska, PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Delta Center in Salt Lake City, Utah, Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena in Spokane, Washington, and FedEx Forum in Memphis, Tennessee.

Depending on how much basketball you want to watch, you can buy first session tickets, second session tickets, or tickets for all sessions. A lot of first round tickets starts around $400 for all sessions, and some tickets even reach up to $1,000. You can definitely find tickets for cheaper, though.

The best Round of 64 bargain will be at Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena, where you can get all sessions tickets for less than $200. All session entry to Gainbridge Fieldhouse is the most expensive, as it will cost at least $520 to get into the Round of 64 there.

Tickets for the Round of 64 are selling fast, but there are still plenty of opening for the Round of 32. Because there are fewer games in the Round of 32, a lot of those tickets are actually cheaper than Round of 64 tickets. You can get into the second round for about $200.

There will be four venues for the regional rounds (Sweet 16 and Elite 8). Those venues are the TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts, Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California, American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas, and Little Ceasers Arena in Detroit, Michigan. All sessions tickets for these games will likely cost you over $500.

The Final Four, along with the National Championship Game, will be at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. Tickets for the semifinals games aren't bad, as you can get into State Farm Stadium for as little as $250 because of the football arena's massive capacity.

However, you will be very far away from the action with tickets that cheap. Most Final Four tickets are in the $400s, and the most expensive tickets are listed at $6,250. Tickets for the National Championship Game are listed at similar prices.

All ticket information was found using Ticketmaster , but Vividseats and SeatGeek have similarly priced options. Overall, March Madness consists of 67 total games, so while there will be plenty of time for you to enjoy the action from the comfort of you home, you should really consider catching a game in person as well.

‘A Lot of Chaos’: Bridge Collapse Creates Upheaval at Largest U.S. Port for Car Trade

A bridge collapse closed Baltimore’s port, an important trade hub that ranks first in the nation by the volume of automobiles and light trucks it handles.

Shipping in the Port of Baltimore

Monthly cargo handled by the Port of Baltimore

  • March 26, 2024

The Baltimore bridge disaster on Tuesday upended operations at one of the nation’s busiest ports, with disruptions likely to be felt for weeks by companies shipping goods in and out of the country — and possibly by consumers as well.

The upheaval will be especially notable for auto makers and coal producers for whom Baltimore has become one of the most vital shipping destinations in the United States.

As officials began to investigate why a nearly 1,000-foot cargo ship ran into the Francis Scott Key Bridge in the middle of the night, companies that transport goods to suppliers and stores scrambled to get trucks to the other East Coast ports receiving goods diverted from Baltimore. Ships sat idle elsewhere, unsure where and when to dock.

“It’s going to cause a lot of chaos,” said Paul Brashier, vice president for drayage and intermodal at ITS Logistics.

The closure of the Port of Baltimore is the latest hit to global supply chains, which have been strained by monthslong crises at the Panama Canal, which has had to slash traffic because of low water levels; and the Suez Canal, which shipping companies are avoiding because of attacks by the Houthis on vessels in the Red Sea.

The auto industry now faces new supply headaches.

Last year, 570,000 vehicles were imported through Baltimore, according to Sina Golara, an assistant professor of supply chain management at Georgia State University. “That’s a huge amount,” he said, equivalent to nearly a quarter of the current inventory of new cars in the United States.

The Baltimore port handled a record amount of foreign cargo last year, and it was the 17th biggest port in the nation overall in 2021, ranked by total tons, according to Bureau of Transportation Statistics.

Baltimore Ranks in the Top 20 U.S. Ports

Total trade in 2021 in millions of tons

Baltimore ranks first in the United States for the volume of automobiles and light trucks it handles, and for vessels that carry wheeled cargo, including farm and construction machinery, according to a statement by Gov. Wes Moore of Maryland last month.

The incident is another stark reminder of the vulnerability of the supply chains that transport consumer products and commodities around the world.

The extent of the disruption depends on how long it takes to reopen shipping channels into the port of Baltimore. Experts estimate it could take several weeks.

Baltimore is not a leading port for container ships, and other ports can likely absorb traffic that was headed to Baltimore, industry officials said.

Stephen Edwards, the chief executive of the Port of Virginia, said it was expecting a vessel on Tuesday that was previously bound for Baltimore, and that others would soon follow. “Between New York and Virginia, we have sufficient capacity to handle all this cargo,” Mr. Edwards said, referring to container ships.

“Shipping companies are very agile,” said Jean-Paul Rodrigue, a professor in the department of maritime business administration at Texas A&M University-Galveston. “In two to three days, it will be rerouted.”

But other types of cargo could remain snarled.

Alexis Ellender, a global analyst at Kpler, a commodities analytics firm, said he expected the port closure to cause significant disruption of U.S. exports of coal. Last year, about 23 million metric tons of coal exports were shipped from the port of Baltimore, about a quarter of all seaborne U.S. coal shipments. About 12 vessel had been expected to leave the port of Baltimore in the next week or so carrying coal, according to Kpler.

He noted that it would not make a huge dent on the global market, but he added that “the impact is significant for the U.S. in terms of loss of export capacity.”

“You may see coal cargoes coming from the mines being rerouted to other ports instead,” he said, with a port in Norfolk, Va., the most likely.

If auto imports are reduced by Baltimore’s closure, inventories could run low, particularly for models that are in high demand.

“We are initiating discussions with our various transportation providers on contingency plans to ensure an uninterrupted flow of vehicles to our customers and will continue to carefully monitor this situation,” Stellantis, which owns Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram, said in a statement.

Other ports have the capacity to import cars, but there may not be enough car transporters at those ports to handle the new traffic.

“You have to make sure the capacity exists all the way in the supply chain — all the way to the dealership,” said Mr. Golara, the Georgia State professor.

A looming battle is insurance payouts, once legal liability is determined. The size of the payout from the insurer is likely to be significant and will depend on factors including the value of the bridge, the scale of loss of life compensation owed to families of people who died, the damage to the vessel and disruption to the port.

The ship’s insurer, Britannia P&I Club, part of a global group of insurers, said in a statement that it was “working closely with the ship manager and relevant authorities to establish the facts and to help ensure that this situation is dealt with quickly and professionally.”

The port has also increasingly catered to large container ships like the Dali, the 948-foot-long cargo vessel carrying goods for the shipping giant Maersk that hit a pillar of the bridge around 1:30 a.m. on Tuesday. The Dali had spent two days in Baltimore’s port before setting off toward the 1.6-mile Francis Scott Key Bridge.

State-owned terminals, managed by the Maryland Port Administration, and privately owned terminals in Baltimore transported a record 52.3 million tons of foreign cargo in 2023, worth $80 billion.

Materials transported in large volumes through the city’s port include coal, coffee and sugar. It was the ninth-busiest port in the nation last year for receiving foreign cargo, in terms of volume and value.

The bridge’s collapse will also disrupt cruises traveling in and out of Baltimore. Norwegian Cruise Line last year began a new fall and winter schedule calling at the Port of Baltimore.

An earlier version of this article misstated the Port of Baltimore’s rank among U.S. ports. It was the nation’s 17th biggest port by total tons in 2021, not the 20th largest.
