Seafront promenade in Fuengirola (Malaga, Andalusia)

Located on the Costa del Sol, Fuengirola is a city with a rich Andalusian flavour which offers an extensive stretch of coastline covered with magnificent beaches.

Possessing a long tourist tradition, this town in the province of Málaga has a wide range of services and infrastructure, which includes golf courses, riding centres, leisure parks, hotel complexes and restaurants, not forgetting a significant calendar of cultural events. Along with it, Fuengirola has managed to preserve a great many remains left behind by the peoples who inhabited the city in ancient times, such as the Roman baths and villa or the Arab castle of Sohail . Any one of its many restaurants and pavement cafés provides the opportunity to sample the local cuisine, whose star product is fish .

Fuengirola sits on a narrow strip of coastline covering 8 kilometres which has a succession of some of the best beaches on the Costa del Sol. Los Boliches , Fuengirola, La Campana , Torreblanca, Las Gaviotas ...well-cared for stretches of sand backed by a long and busy promenade where you'll find residential complexes, hotels, restaurants and other services so you can enjoy the sun and sea in comfort. Sports fans have a wide range of possibilities in Fuengirola. Those who prefer golf will find the town and the surrounding area has some twenty magnificent 18-hole courses which allow the golfer to play year-round. The racetrack and other riding schools from neighbouring Mijas provide excellent facilities for taking up or perfecting the equestrian arts. It is also possible to play tennis in any of the area's clubs. Water sports are especially important in Fuengirola. The coastline has beautiful sea depths which make scuba diving , a sport which can be learned in any of the town's diving schools , particularly attractive. The marina , located next to the fishing port, provides modern facilities for navigation, as well as other water sports, such as sailing or scuba diving. Lastly, outdoor pursuits in the province have the perfect setting inland, where there are a great many routes suitable for hiking , as well as routes on horseback or by bicycle. But Fuengirola provides many other leisure possibilities for all ages. You can visit the Zoo , enjoy an unforgettable day at the water park or tour Sohail Fluvial Park , an extensive and modern recreational area crossed by a navigable canal measuring 800 metres in length. Or if you prefer, you can attend one of the cultural events which are staged in the Municipal Arts Centre or the modern Peace Centre .

The town centre

Fuengirola preserves witin its streets corners full of local colour and charm. Dominating the centre of town is Constitution Square (19th century), where the Church of Nuestra Señora del Rosario stands. On top of a nearby hill, located next to the mouth of the river Fuengirola, stands the Castle of Sohail , ordered to be built by Abd-al-Rahman III in the 10th century and which still preserves some paintings of its walls. Next to this parade ground, the remains of the old Phoenician settlement have been found, which was the origin of the town (6th-3rd centuries BC). Testimony of the city's importance in the past is the Roman city of Suel , located on the hillside of the castle. Other Roman remains appear in the archaelogical sites of Finca del Secretario and Torreblanca , where there is a Roman baths and a Visigoth necropolis. Fuengirola also has neighbourhoods full of local colour, such as Santa Fe de los Boliches , deeply-rooted to the sea, or Pueblo López , which has streets crammed with beautiful examples of Andalusian popular architecture.

Gastronomy, festivals and surrounding area

As occurs in other towns on the Costa del Sol, the gastronomy of Fuengirola is characterized by the central role given to fish, cooked on the grill or salted, not forgetting the emblematic fried fish and sardines on the spit (grilled). Also traditional are "ajoblanco con uvas" (a cold soup with almonds, oil, garlic and grapes) and "gazpacho" (made from tomatoes, pepper, bread, oil and garlic). The entire province is well-known for its excellent wines labelled under the Designation of Origin Málaga standard, among which the sweet wines are most prominent. Among the most anticipated events of the year in Fuengirola is its festival in honour of Nuestra Señora del Rosario , patron of the town, which has as its main stage at the festival ground and which is held from 6 to 12 October. In July, the festival of the Virgen del Carmen takes place in the district of Los Boliches, and the Festival of the Castle is held, declared to be of tourist interest. From Fuengirola it is possible to visit other towns on the Costa del Sol. A few kilometres inland are mountain towns such as Mijas , with its typically Andalusian houses, and Alhaurín el Grande , where the church of la Encarnación and the palace of Montellano are outstanding. In the coastal area are Marbella, Torremolinos and Benalmádena , towns with a deep-rooted tourist tradition which provide outstanding infrastructure. Those who prefer to enjoy nature will find the Sierra de las Nieves Nature Reserve to be one of the best-protected spaces in the whole province.

Fuengirola

Its municipal area is one of the smallest in the province, consisting merely of the coastal strip occupied by the town and the Santa Fe de los Boliches district, which make up seven kilometres of excellent beaches.

Though apparently of Phoenician origin, the town's history really begins in Arabic times with the building of Sohail Castle , part of whose walls still remain, for defence purposes. The town centre still retains a certain traditional air, though it is nowadays characterised by the hotels, apartments etc. necessary to its main source of income: sun and sand tourism.

It was inhabited by the bástulos, the Phoenicians, and, later, the Carthaginians.

The Romans called it Suel and the Arabs Sohail, the name of a star which, according to Ibn-Jallicam, could only be seen in the peninsula from this spot.

In 912, Abderraman III ordered the construction of a fortress on the small hill which stands between the coastline and the mouth of the River Sohail; the remains of this castle, though in a state of extreme disrepair, still form an important feature in the landscape of the Fuengirola coast. It was used as for military purposes and to monitor the shores until the 19th century, playing an important part in the War of Independence.

Fuengirola was captured by the Catholic Monarchs on 7 August, 1487.

In the 17th century, the town acquired its present-day denomination, which appears to be derived from the name by which it was referred to by the Genoese sailors who came to these shores and used dragnets, which they called "gironas".

Abderraman Ben Abdallah Ben Ahmed "El Sohaili", the eminent 12th-century writer and essayist famed for his knowledge of grammar and theology, was born here in 1115.

Only 25km from Malaga International Airport is the town of Fuengirola – one of the most popular destinations on the Costa del Sol.  Easily accessible by road, rail or bus, it is not difficult to see why this buzzing cosmopolitan town on the Mediterranean is the number one choice for so many.

Previously, a tiny fishing village, Fuengirola has become a vibrant metropolis with character.  The advent of many up-market tapa bars, good cafes and restaurants , interspersed with chic boutiques and other shops of interest, as well as fabulous beaches makes it the perfect holiday destination.  The main square, Plaza de la Constitución , has been re-designed but still retains its unique enchantment.  It looks pretty especially at Christmas, when it is decorated with very attractive lights and ornaments.  It is also attractive during the Fuengirola summer feria, when the whole town takes part in the annual street celebrations.  A walk down the narrow, pedestrian streets leading off the main square is a voyage of discovery for the many visitors, who come across some of the hidden secrets and delightful corners of this friendly, Andalucian town.

Beaches in Fuengirola

One of the Fuengirola’s main attractions is, of course, its wonderful seven kilometres (five miles) of sandy beaches , stretching from the Sohail Castle to the west and Torreblanca to the east.

Fuengirola has all the amenities and comforts you need but in a beautiful Mediterranean setting. Whether you love shopping , or looking for a good gym  or municipal sports centres .

Watersports

Water sports are strongly featured in this coastal resort. Where better to get to grips with speed boats, jet skis, parasailing than at the cool Marina .

Getting around Fuengirola

If perhaps you need a more personal hand finding things then you may want to try a Viator guided tour on our excursions page, which always prove to be enjoyable. Buses in Fuengirola run quite regularly to places along the coast such as Torremolinos and Marbella all the way to Estepona and Algeciras. 15 Best Things to Do in Fuengirola (Spain)

Fuengirola is quite a rare thing: In many ways it’s an ordinary Spanish coastal town, even though it’s right at the centre of the Costa del Sol . There are lots of tourists of course, and a sizeable population of expats, but this hasn’t altered the Spanish feel of the place.

Fuengirola has welcoming plazas, promenades and parks, and plenty of restaurants that serve local specialities like grilled sardines. Added to these are big-hitting attractions like the Bioparc Feungirola, a humane zoo that the little ones will adore. You’ve also got three Blue Flag beaches, so everything is in place for an easy holiday in the sun.

Let’s have a look at the best things to do in Fuengirola :

1. Bioparc Fuengirola

Bioparc Fuengirola

Nobody likes to see unhappy animals confined to cages, and you definitely won’t get them at this first-rate family attraction.

Both animal and visitor are brought closer together at the Bioparc Fuengirola.

For visitors this means adventurous pathways through recreated tropical forest, with real vegetation and water features like waterfalls.

For creatures like crocodiles, gibbons, pygmy hippos, lowland gorillas, Malayan tapirs and Borneo Orangutans it means ethical enclosures without bars.

In the summer you can book a “moonlight visit” to get glimpses of nocturnal animals that would normally be hiding or asleep during daylight hours.

Tickets are available online: Bioparc Fuengirola General Admission Day Ticket

Fuengirola Beach

Most resorts would be happy to have one beach awarded the Blue Flag.

Well, Fuengirola has three! So there can be no doubt that the standards of hygiene and the amenities provided are top-notch.

Starting in the south is Playa de Fuengirola, the resort’s main beach that runs up to the marina.

Soft sand, smooth waters and beach bars with delicious tapas are what you’ll find here.

Boliches-Gaviotas is in the quieter part of Fuengirola, has a gentle curve and is marginally broader.

Joggers, cyclists and roller-skaters will make their way along the Paseo Marítimo in summer.

Finally there’s Torreblanca, which is quieter still and strikes a nice balance between seclusion and useful facilities like water sports centres and food kiosks.

3. Plaza de la Constitución

Plaza de la Constitución

Fuengirola is a typical Spanish town, in that most people live in apartments and when they want to enjoy the sun or meet friends they simply head for public spaces like Plaza de la Constitución.

You’ll see plenty of Fuengirola’s older citizens here, chatting on benches below pergolas with a dense cloak of vines to provide shade.

On the square is the Church of Nuestra Señora del Rosario, a whitewashed church that holds occasional concerts.

You can take a peek inside, or do a bit of shopping on the streets that branch off the square.

At night this will be one of your destinations for tapas or a sit-down meal.

4. Water sports

Jetski Rental

Fuengirola has its own marina, which is great news if you want some marine-based fun in the Mediterranean.

As for what you get up to, the range of activities is almost endless.

There are a couple of companies based in the marina providing parasailing, tubing, wakeboarding and water-skiing for people in need of a rush.

If you’re after a more tranquil time you can go on a cruise out into the mirrored waters of the open sea to spot dolphins, or even go all out and charter a yacht for a day or two.

Mijas Costa

For those who know how to swing a club it would be unheard of to come to the Costa del Sol and not play at least one round.

Mijas Costa nearby has nine courses, most of which are private clubs that still accept pay and play golfers.

If you need to blow away the cobwebs, most have full practice facilities and driving ranges.

If you’ve got a low-ish handicap then Miraflores is the one for you, with a island green on the 15th.

La Siesta would be good for beginners and dormant golfers; it’s a forgiving nine hole par-27. And for families Fuengirola has an adventure golf course with 18 ingeniously-designed holes.

6. Miramar Shopping Centre

Miramar Shopping Centre

Fuengirola has one of the largest shopping malls on the Costa del Sol.

At the height of summer you may want to flee from the sun to somewhere air-conditioned for a couple of hours.

All the better if there’s a wide choice of shops and restaurants on hand.

Superdry, Primark, Mango and H&M are here, as well as Spanish high-street mainstays like Oysho, Bershka and Pull & Bear.

If you’re in need of a bit of grown-up time then you can bring the little ones to Isla Miramar for a while where they’ll be in the care of specialist staff organising fun activities the whole day.

7. Sohail Castle

Sohail Castle

This bulky coastal defence was built by the Córdoban Caliph, Abd -ar-Rahman III in the 10th century as a citadel with a watchtower.

During the Peninsular War in the early-18th century the castle was a base for Napoleon’s French Army, repelling a siege and helping to defeat a British corps in the Battle of Fuengirola in 1810. If you can brave the steep walk you can enter the castle and climb up to the gun positions  for vistas of the resort.

The bailey is empty, and serves as a grand auditorium for concerts on certain summer nights.

8. Costa Water Park

Costa Water Park

If you’re with little guys who have ants in their pants and are bored of Fuengirola Beach, you could get one-hour passes for this floating playground, in the shallow waters a few metres from the shore.

They’ll be fitted with lifejackets and will be supervised while they climb, run and slide around an inflatable adventure course.

The Water Park is perfectly safe, and shuts down when the red or yellow flags are up.

After an hour tearing around this playground kids may not be quite so fidgety for the rest of the day!

9. Food and Drink

Calamares

The Málaga Province specialises in many of the dishes that people consider to be typically Spanish.

This goes for deep-fried fish and seafood tapas.

So pescaíto frito, calamares and chipirones (fried baby squid) will appear on the menu at most beachside bars (chiringuitos). Also local are espetos, sardines skewered and grilled over a wood fire, often in a pit made on the beach.

Gazpacho is another favourite in this part of southern Spain, and actually has Moorish origins.

It’s a room-temperature vegetable soup made with tomato, garlic and cucumber.

10. Sould Park

Sould Park

Tucked between the marina and Paseo Marítimo is something for Fuengirola’s littlest visitors.

Sould Park is a mini amusement attraction with games and rides for kids up to about eight or nine.

All with a jungle and desert island theme are carousels, bumper boats, a small Ferris wheel, as well as large bouncy castles, trampolines and inflatable slides.

For bigger kids there’s a “Play Zone”, with air hockey and skeeball.

Parents who need a breather can take a moment at the cafe-bar with outdoor seating.

11. Finca del Secretario

Finca del Secretario

You may need a few minutes to find it, but lost behind the new developments close to Los Boliches station is a Roman archaeological site dating to the 1st century.

It was discovered in 1987 and excavations have been taking place since 1991. The most striking part for a casual visitor is what’s left of the baths.

You can make out the underground heating system in great detail from the viewing platform.

The trendy “El Jazzy Bar” is part of the complex and you can get a good look at the whole site from the window or terrace with a beer or mojito in hand!

12. Castillo de Colomares

Castillo de Colomares

In the hills between Funegirola and Benalmádena is a castle that looks like the bold Castilian fortresses and palaces from the renaissance.

It was built to commemorate Christopher Columbus’ discovery of America, but only dates to the 1980s and 90s.

It’s the work of a local businessman and just two bricklayers, and is a homage to Spain’s national architecture, with a bit of byzantine, romanesque, Moorish and gothic design thrown in.

Definitely worth a photo is the large portal with a twin pointed arch and carvings of the Catholic monarchs and their coat of arms.

13. Benalmádena

Benalmádena

Next-door, the big resort of Benalmádena is a few minutes in the car or 20 minutes on the C1 train.

There are a handful of tourist attractions to seek out, as well as a beautiful old village set back from the coast.

The best option for families is catch the cable car to Mount Calamorro.

On the 15-minute journey you’ll ascend more than 700 metres, for what are probably the best views in the entire Costa del Sol.

At the top there’s a restaurant, while you can watch falconry demonstrations and follow your curiosity along the trails that weave through the mountains.

14. La Carihuela

La Carihuela

Linking the seafront of the neighbouring resorts of Torremolinos and Benalmádena is a long esplanade paved the whole way with a geometric mosaic.

It’s worth making the brief trip up the coast to see it for yourself.

Whether you’re lazing on the beach by day or going out to dinner at night, La Carihuela will be part of the experience.

It’s used by locals as much as tourists and has a friendly, cosmopolitan ambience.

There’s a mind-boggling choice of restaurants of all descriptions, as well as Spanish chiringuitos (beach bars) loved for their pescaíto frito (fried whitebait), and if you’re on the hunt for the perfect patch of beach you can use this walkway to weigh up your options.

15. Mijas Pueblo

Mijas Pueblo

Just ten minutes inland, but more than 400 metres above sea level is the gorgeous little town of Mijas.

Clinging to the mountainside is a sea of whitewashed houses and a hint of what the Costa del Sol looked like – well, before it was the Costa del Sol.

The best view of the wonderful townscape can be had from the terracing of the Plaza de Toros (bullring): On a sunny day the walls of the houses are bright against the dark browns and greens of the soaring mountains behind.

Spend a couple of hours poking around the old streets where ceramics are still made and painted by hand in the traditional Andalusian style.

Fuengirola is a crowded beach town decorated with utilitarian apartment buildings, but, despite half a century of rampant development, it retains a few redeeming qualities. Check out the beach – all 7km of it – adorned with a 10th-century Moorish castle. The town also has a large foreign-resident population, many of whom arrived in the '60s – and stayed (yes, there are a few grey ponytails around).

Things to do in Fuengirola

Visit castillo sohail.

One of the best things to do in Fuengirola is to visit Castillo Soheil at the edge of town. Sitting on a tiny hill overlooking the beach, the remains of the Moorish castle are some of the best castles in Malaga province.

In the year 956, the construction of a citadel started on the site, and later in the 12th century, the structure was reinforced with walls and towers when an Alcazaba was built.

During the reconquest in 1485, the Alcazaba was destroyed and a castle was built in its place. While the Christians weren’t the last conquerors of the defensive structure, the reconstruction of the castle you see today is quite similar to the one built back then.

On the slope around the castle, green grass and benches make it a popular park among the locals to walk the dog or go for a picnic. In the summer months, there are also major concerts and music festivals below the castle with a large stage set up.

The site is also the setting for a yearly Medieval Market held every August and other casual markets.

Go on a dolphin safari

In Fuengirola, things to do include an array of water activities. One of the most exciting activities in Fuengirola is going on a dolphin safari.

The most commonly spotted dolphin species on Costa del Sol are the Common Dolphin, the Striped Dolphin, and the Bottle-nosed Dolphin.

I highly recommend a tour on a yacht where you can enjoy snacks and drinks, sunbathe, and snorkel off the boat. Since dolphin sightings are never guaranteed, they are wild animals, after all, it’s good to have other exciting activities to do onboard.

Have a coffee at Plaza de la Constitucion

One of the most beautiful squares in Fuengirola is Plaza de la Constitucion. Lined with trees and benches it has a cute church on one side and a few restaurants and cafés on the other side.

This is a wonderful place to enjoy a coffee or grab a quick bite to eat when you need a break from exploring all the Fuengirola tourist attractions.

The square is also sitting next to the shopping street where you’ll find clothing stores like Zara and Mango lined up.

Stroll along the promenade

A stroll along the promenade is one of the top things to do in Fuengirola all year round. In the summer months, the early mornings and the evenings from sunset and onwards are the best times due to the heat. However, expect it to be crowded as one of the most popular tourist destinations in Andalucia.

Throughout the winter months, on the other hand, it’s a lot more peaceful and it’s a wonderful way to soak in that winter sun and fresh sea breeze while being in activity.

There are plenty of bars and restaurants along the promenade if you want to take a break to refuel. Or you can go shopping in any of the small shops.

The promenade stretches for 8 kilometers from Castillo Sohail and all the way to Carvajal, so you can see a whole lot of coastline if you’re up for it.

Things to do Fuengirola - promenade walk

Have a drink at a chiringuito at sunset

Fuengirola Beach at sunset is truly magical and in my opinion, the best time for a drink in any of the chiringuitos (beach bars) is exactly at sunset.

There is something serene about this time of the day when the beach slowly empties except for a few locals playing beach volleyball into the late hours and a couple of groups of friends going for an evening bath after ending the work day.

As the horizon changes color from blue to yellow, orange, and pink there’s this small break in a busy summer day before the craziness of Fuengirola’s nightlife sets in.

Fuengirola what to do

Finca del Secretario

You might not expect that among what to see in Fuengirola there are ancient Roman ruins dating back to between the 1st and the 4th century AD.

Among the remains, you find an ancient Roman salting factory, Roman baths, and a Roman villa.

Finca del Secretario wasn’t discovered until 1987, but now you can visit the archaeological remains for free. The site is open every day between 10:00-22:00 in winter and 10:00-24:00 in the summer.

The interpretation center has shorter opening hours, but you can read information signs by the different remains.

Things to see in Fuengirola

Take the Hop on Hop off train

An efficient way to see the top attractions in Fuengirola, especially if you travel with kids, is to get on the hop-on hop-off train that departs from Plaza Teresa Zabell near the marina.

The main stops are the Roman ruins, the Feria ground, Bioparc, and the Miramar shopping mall close to Sohail Castle and you can hop on and off as many times as you want. Included in the tour is an audio guide that is offered in 7 different languages.

The trains run from 10:30 in the morning and the frequency depends on the season, so it will run often in the summer and less in the winter.

Shop til you drop at Miramar shopping mall

If you’re looking for excellent shopping, Miramar Shopping Mall is the place to be. You basically find some of the best shopping in Fuengirola in one place. People from all over Andalucia head to Fuengirola just to go shopping there.

Even travelers from Morocco across the pond travel to Miramar just for the shopping. You find all the most popular clothing stores like Zara, Pull & Bear, H&M, Bershka, and Primark in one place. On top of that, you find jewelry and electronics, and multiple sports stores.

Especially if you travel in winter in Costa del Sol and you catch a day of rain, it’s perfect to wander inside the mall.

The mall has plenty of cafés and restaurants to fuel you up when you need a break and you can always round off the day with a movie at the cinema on the top floor.

Take in vitamin D at the beach

One of the best things to do in Fuengirola is surely to relax at the beach and even in the winter months, a sunny day without any wind invites for a lovely beach day where you can work on your tan line.

There are several beaches to choose from. You can hang out at the dog beach past the castle with your pooch or find a spot along the 7 kilometers of sandy beaches that all belong to Fuengirola. The more central, the more you find restaurants and bars.

That said, all of Fuengirola’s beaches, apart from the dog beach, are safe bathing beaches with lifeguards, showers, and toilets in the summer.

Enjoy the views from Espigon Pier

Past the marina, you can enjoy a walk on the Espigon Pier where the locals try their luck in catching a fish for dinner. It’s a nice way to see the coast from the water end without getting on a boat or venturing out on a paddleboard.

It’s particularly beautiful at sunset when the sky turns pink on the horizon and behind the attractive Sierra de Mijas mountain range behind the town.

What to see in Fuengirola

Cross the Puente de la Armada

Walking the esplanade towards the castle you will eventually come across the Puente de la Armada. The modern, white pedestrian bridge crosses the Fuengirola River in picturesque surroundings.

Across the river you see Sohail Castle looming on the hilltop above the coast and the golden beaches on the coastline are elegantly divided by the river flowing out into the sea.

Things to do Fuengirola - Puente de la Armada

Have tapas at Plaza Chinorros

One of Fuengirola’s most quaint squares is Plaza Chinorros. Right behind the post office and close to Plaza de la Constitución, you reach this vibrant corner full of lovely restaurants and bars.

If you are looking for tapas and wine, this is the place to be and it makes for the perfect spot to warm up with some food and light drinks before a night out as it is within walking distance to the most popular bars and nightclubs in town.

Fuengirola activities - tapas and wine

Play mini golf

If you’re still wondering what to do in Fuengirola Spain, head to the minigolf near Miramar in Mijas. There you can have fun for a few rounds with family or friends.

They have a cute little bar where you can enjoy a round of drinks before or after your game.

Playing mini golf is one of the best things to do in Fuengirola with kids for sure and a great way to stay active while bonding and having a good laugh.

Places to visit near Fuengirola - Mini golf Miramar

Go for a thrilling round of Go kart

One of the most surprising things to do in Fuengirola is to head up to the roof of the Miramar shopping center. Among other things, you’ll find a go-kart track where you can enjoy a few rounds of reckless driving.

This is a fun activity for the whole family and a nice break from shopping, sightseeing, and the beach which are the main activities people think of when they go to Fuengirola.

There is also a café and children’s rides for the youngest on the roof.

Stroll around the neighborhood of Los Boliches

Los Boliches is without a doubt my favorite neighborhood in Fuengirola. Its traditionally tiled houses, narrow streets, and cute squares make it unique compared to the rest of Fuengirola.

Besides, Los Boliches is jam-packed with lovely restaurants and tapas bars so the foodies will have a wonderful time discovering local and international cuisine in this area of town.

what to do in Fuengirola Spain

Take the kids to Sould Park

By the port, you find a great little park with rides for children of different ages. If you travel with kids, this is among the best things to do Fuengirola has to offer.

For only a few Euros, you can get tickets for your kids to take different rides and play fun games that will keep them busy and burn some energy so that you can enjoy a relaxing evening later on.

There is also a café where you can sit and relax while the older children enjoy the park.

Fuengirola kids park

Have lunch in the La Galería

For a lovely lunch spot centrally in Fuengirola, head to La Galería, an epic food market near Plaza de la Constitución. There are multiple food choices from different restaurants in Fuengirola.

Order from your favorite and sit together and eat at one table. Perfect for traveling with friends or family when you all want different food.

Things to do near Fuengirola - Food Market

Explore the coast by paddleboard

In Fuengirola, activities in the water like paddleboarding are popular and you can rent in several places along the coast. Fuengirola usually sees calm waters and is safe even for beginners.

This is a great family activity in Fuengirola and a great way to soak in the sun for anyone who gets restless laying on the beach (I can’t be the only one?)

On the port, you can even book tours with an instructor if you feel safer while you get used to the board.

Activities in Fuengirola

Party your heart out at Feria de Los Pueblos

One of the absolute most fun ferias in Spain is Feria de Los Pueblos in Fuengirola. Every May, the Feria Ground turns into an international party.

Different countries take up the different Feria houses which means you can travel the world in a night by experiencing traditional music, dance, clothes, food, and drinks from all the different countries represented.

There are usually some awesome concerts in some of the casetas too that I would gladly have paid to see, but at the Feria, you get it all for free! Except for the food and drinks, of course.

If yo manage to time your visit to Fuengirola with Feria de Los Pueblos, I highly recommend it. This party is like no other in Spain (and I’ve been to quite a bit of them!)

Feria de Los Pueblos Fuengirola

Go hiking in the Sierra

Fuengirola is only a short distance from endless hiking routes in Sierra de Mijas and Benalmádena as well as Sierra Blanca above Marbella.

You find all difficulty levels, but be aware that the mountains are steep so you will be well off with a basic fitness level to enjoy it.

What I love about the hiking routes behind Fuengirola are the coastal views on one side and the endless, rolling mountains on the other side.

Among my favorite mountain tops are Pico Castillejo, Pico Puerto Malaga, and Pico de Mijas in Sierra de Mijas. You can easily reach these trails by taking the bus to Mijas Pueblo.

In Sierra Blanca, it’s La Concha and Cruz de Juanar that offer the best views, but to get there, you’ll need a car and drive to Refugio de Juanar.

Note that the hikes in the coastal mountains are for the Andalucia winter season only. In the summer it’s too hot, so I rather recommend getting a rental car and explore refreshing river hikes like Rio Verde in Istán or Otívar, and epic gorge river hikes like Rio Chillar and Rio Higueron in Nerja.

Hiking Fuengirola things to do

Have vegan doughnuts at Vegabonty

If you’re up for a vegan sweet fix, there is no better place than the vegan bakery, Vegabonty! With so many choices in makes, cookies, and doughnuts, you might just purchase half the bakery.

I know I always come out with more than double of what I had first planned every time I step foot in there.

Among my favorites are the Lotus doughnuts and the cinnamon buns, but I usually come out with one or two pieces of cake too and they never disappoint.

Note that they are closed on Monday and Tuesday, but you can keep updated on their Facebook page .

what to do in Fuengirola Malaga

See the views from Mijas Pueblo

Mijas Pueblo is one of the best places to visit near Fuengirola, especially for the views. The quaint hillside village is one of the most stunning villages in Costa del Sol and there are surprisingly many things to do in Mijas Pueblo .

Epic viewpoints line the whitewashed village and narrow cobblestoned streets connect enchanting squares as they weave through white houses decorated in colorful pot plants.

While many restaurants are set with epic views, these are not always the best if you’re looking for good food. Personally, I find most of them to be horrific tourist traps that I would never return to. However, there are a lot of amazing places to eat without a view.

Spending the evening in Mijas Pueblo can often surprise you with a random village fair or market, especially in the summer months and around Christmas.

Fuengirola things to do - Visit Mijas Pueblo

Party at Feria de Fuengirola

If you happen to be in Fuengirola in October, you might be lucky and catch the Feria de Fuengirola which is the yearly fair of Fuengirola town.

Music and drinks accompanied by locals dressed up in Flamenco dresses and tourists dancing their hearts out is an experience of a lifetime.

It is set at the Feria ground where there is also a fairground where the children will have a lot of fun.

Feria de Fuengirola, Malaga

Walk El Caminito del Rey

One of the fun things to do in Fuengirola is to head to El Chorro and hike El Caminito del Rey. But this is not for the faint-hearted. The path is pinned on the mountain wall with up to 100 meters straight down to the canyon floor. I can easily say that this is among the best day trips from Fuengirola !

The walk is only a couple of hours one way and you must take a shuttle bus the other way around. Coming from fuengirola, I suggest taking a tour if you don’t have a car.

This tour is excellent with pick up in Fuengirola and a guide included.

If you drive, yourself, you must purchase tickets in advance and I recommend parking by El Kiosko where the hike starts and take the bus back.

The walk to the checkpoint takes between 20 and 50 minutes depending on the trail you pick. There you will get a helmet and a security brief, even if you choose not to book a guide. You can book your ticket here .

Fuengirola activities - El Caminito del Rey

Visit the fairytale Colomares Castle

One of the most impressive places to visit near Fuengirola is the monument of Colomares Castle . Being one of the most beautiful castles in Malaga , it’s situated on the hillside of Benalmadena only a few minutes drive from Fuengirola.

With its fairytale features, Colomares Castle was built to commemorate Christopher Columbus and the discovery of the “New World”.

You can walk around the gardens and climb the balconies of this incredibly detailed castle. It also features the three ships that Christopher Columbus used in his sailings.

What to do in Fuengirola - Colomares Castle

Have lunch at La Libelula

If you wonder where to have lunch, head to one of the absolute best vegan restaurants in Fuengirola, loved by the locals, no matter if they are meat eaters, vegetarians, or vegans.

This homely restaurant offers homemade eco food, supporting local farmers and businesses. Every month, they offer a “tapa del dia” (tapas of the day) that you must pay cash (2 Euros) and 100% of the money go to a charity for animal welfare which they change each month.

I have been a regular at La Libelula for years and love their spirit and the way they constantly work on making a better impact on the environment, the animals, and the local businesses.

My favorites: The seitan kebab and the Banoffee Pie for dessert! (plus I always order the “tapa del dia” to support the chosen animal charity.

Get wet at AquaMijas

Especially if you travel with kids, AquaMijas is a must visit and one of the most thrilling activities in Fuengirola. With multiple water slides, pools, wave pools, and jacuzzis for all ages, you will not get bored.

A favorite among the young ones is Lizard Island which is filled with fun and water games.

This is a great break from the beach and they have several food stalls with different kinds of food and snack so you won’t go hungry!

Aqua park in Fuengirola things to do

Go on a boat trip

So, it’s a hot summer day in Fuengirola. What to do other than chilling on the beach, you might think? One of my favorite things to do in Fuengirola in the summer is to take a boat trip.

You can either go dolphin watching, or go on a sunset cruise. Most boat tours going from Fuengirola include drinks or you can bring your own drinks.

This is a wonderful way to explore the water, and get some fresh air to cool down on a hot day. But don’t forget sunscreen! Even in the winter months, the sun is fierce, especially if you haven’t had much sun on your skin for a while.

Go scuba diving

Not all Fuengirola attractions are above water. Why not go scuba diving to explore the underwater world? There are diving centers at the marina and most dives will take place in Nerja.

The area around Nerja and Maro is protected marine reserve where you can explore underwater caves and tunnels as well as unique species that aren’t found other places in the Mediterranean.

If you want to test out diving for the first time, you can take a baptism dive off the beach in Fuengirola. You can also take diving courses there.

Take a day tour to Morocco

One of the most unforgettable things to do in Fuengirola Spain, is a day tour to Morocco. Being only about an hour from the ferry terminal in algeciras and one and a half hour’s drive from Tarifa ferry terminal, it is an easy day trip to a complete different culture.

There are multiple tours taking you from Fuengirola to the ancient medina of Tanger or the quaint fishing village of Asilah.

Sipping Moroccan mint tea on a roof top overlooking Africa and seeing Spain across the Strait of Gibraltar sounds like a dream, but if you’re in Fuengirola, that dream can easily become reality.

Check this tour from Fuengirola .

Check out Fuengirola Market

The market is one of the many things to see in Fuengirola. It finds place on the Feria ground on Tuesdays and Saturdays, and on Sundays it’s set up by the mosque.

You can find anything from clothes, handicrafts, antiques, and plants. It’s a great way to soak up some local life while browsing the different stalls.

The market is a place to find unique items and support the local economy.

Top things to do in Fuengirola - market stall

Walk around Pueblo Lopez

One of the most picturesque neighborhoods in Fuengirola is Pueblo Lopez. Situated right above the end train station, it consists of whitewashed houses and pretty squares.

If you have extra time on your itinerary, I highly recommend taking a stroll through this traditional and non-touristy district.

You can also sit down for a coffee or a beer at a bar before continuing your journey through Fuengirola’s attractions.

Pueblo Lopez things to see in Fuengirola

Go for a round of padel

While you’re in Fuengirola, why not go for a round of padel? It’s said to be the national sport of Spain and you can find padel courts anywhere in town.

I suggest going either to Elola or Miramar, but there are many other places you can rent equipment and play a round of this fun and fast-paced sport.

If yo are new to it, why not book classes to learn all the tricks before doing it on your own? I assure you, once you’ve tried it, you’ll be hooked.

Party all night

Nightlife in Fuengirola Malaga caters to everyone. From local Spanish bars to traditional Irish pubs you can combine food and drinks until nightfall.

For the late hours, there is a large range of nightclubs where you can dance until the early morning hours. There are taxis situated outside the main nightclub areas and I recommend you take one home instead of walking even though it’s not too far to your hotel.

Fuengirola Costa del Sol

Zipline across Fuengirola river

In the summer months, you can go ziplining across the Fuengirola River that runs past Miramar and Sohail Castle into the sea.

It’s a short but sweet zip line that is fun to take the older kids on. Cross the Puente de la Armada to find it right below the castle.

Take a day tour to Gibraltar

Finally, no trip to Fuengirola is complete without a day trip into the British territory of Gibraltar. Uncover underground cave systems, see the views from the Rock of Gibraltar, and take a selfie with the Gibraltar monkeys.

This is the only place in Europe where you’ll find wild monkeys so make sure you respect that they’re wildlife. Do not feed the monkeys and watch your belongings, because they can be cheeky!

Any Fuengirola to Gibraltar day trip will be fun, even though there are plenty of things to do in Gibraltar and you won’t get time to do it all. The little British peninsula also has great tax-free shopping!

You can drive there yourself, but if you only have a day, I suggest going on a guided tour so that you get the most out of your day without the stress of parking etc.

You can park on the Spanish side of the border and walk over or you can drive across. But no matter how you travel, make sure you bring your passport for border control . If you need a visa to enter the UK , you most likely need one for Gibraltar (with few exceptions.) You can check if you need a UK visa here .

If you prefer to go on a guided tour, you can check out prices and availability here .

Reflections on what to do in Fuengirola

After living in Fuengirola’s surroundings for many years – Fuengirola being the main hub for meeting friends and going out, it was fun putting together this list of what to do in Fuengirola. It is surprisingly many fun things to do in the town and its surroundings that I haven’t thought about because it was part of my everyday life.

When you live in a place, you don’t walk around the streets with a tourist’s eyes. You take things for granted and look at them as normal things to do. Just like you would do in your own hometown.

After reading this, I’m sure you’ll find enough exciting things to do in Fuengirola to enjoy your vacation no matter how long you plan to stay and what type of traveler you are. It’s truly one of the best places to stay in Costa del Sol .

Besides, there are some epic day trips to be explored with so many spectacular places and things to do near Fuengirola like whitewashed villages, mountains, and easy access to Morocco and Gibraltar.

Happy travels!

ESSENTIAL Fuengirola Tourist Guide: BEST Things to Do & See

Fuengirola is a tourist resort located on the Costa del Sol in Spain.

Fuengirola dates back as far as the Phoenicians and also played a role in Roman and Arabic civilisations.

Today a Moorish Castle still stands in Fuengirola. Fuengirola is also home to more than eight kilometres of beaches.

Are you an expat in Fuengirola? What do you like/dislike about it? Let us know in the comments box at the bottom of the page.

Where is Fuengirola?

Fuengirola is located on the Costa del Sol to the south of the tourist resorts of Benalmadena and Torremolinos yet lies to the north of glitzy, ritzy Marbella. There are two airports within a relatively short distance to the resort which are Gibraltar Airport and Malaga Airport.

Fuengirola is 20 km west of Malaga along the coast towards Marbella. Fuengirola is very well located – only 20 minutes drive from the major international airport of Malaga with its huge choice of flights to destinations all over Europe.

Fuengirola is blessed with a good transport infrastructure and there are numerous bus and train services running daily between the resort and Malaga Airport. You can also hire a car for the duration of your holiday.

By car Fuengirola is just off the major roads of N340 or the A7 autoroute. Fuengirola has a regular bus service to and from Malaga airport and also Malaga city centre. Moreover, Fuengirola has a train service to Malaga city centre.

What is Fuengirola Like?

Fuengirola is very much a massive, sprawling high-rise tourist resort comparable to mass tourist resorts such as Benidorm on the Costa Blanca and fellow  Costa del Sol resorts such as Torremolinos and Benalmadena .

There are lots of facilities and amenities here and plenty of nightlife, but for a more traditional taste of Spain head elsewhere!

Is Fuengirola near Benidorm?

People who like Fuengirola would totally love Benidorm but they are not remotely close. Benidorm is far away on Spain’s Costa Blanca coast which is a distance of 543 km and a drive time of 5 hours and 17 minutes. If you want more bars and clubs try Benalmadena, Marbella or Torremolinos instead.

What to See and Do in Fuengirola

If you wish to see what the Fuengirola market has to offer then you can head for the Los Boliches fairground on a Tuesday or a Saturday while on a Sunday you can browse for antiques at the marina.

A few blocks from the resort centre is the Fuengirola Zoo which is one of the most modern in Europe. The Tivoli World amusement park in neighbouring Benalmadena will keep children occupied for many hours as it closes daily in the summer months at two in the morning.

To experience a Flamenco Show you can head for the Parque Miramar Shopping and Leisure Centre where every Wednesday evening the Flamenco Azabache gives a free tourist show.

The Parque Miramar Shopping and Leisure Centre is one of the largest shopping centres on the Costa del Sol and is home to all the Spanish high street stores such as Zara, Springfield, Massimo Dutti, Mango as well as C&A and H&M. There are also multi-cinema screens, bars, restaurants and free parking for as many as 3500 cars.

Hostal Galan – “Our hostel is newly opened and we have low prices (15 Euro / person / night). We rent rooms both daily and monthly. Our hostel is located in the heart of Fuengirola on a quiet pedestrian street near the beach. The hostel is situated behind the beautiful “Plaza de la Constitution” with fine restaurants, pubs and garages, close to making every visit a pleasure.”

Another popular way to spend a vacation in Fuengirola is to rent an apartment. Many of the apartment complexes are within easy walking distance to the beaches and the most recommended apartment complexes include the Fuengirola Beach Apartments and the Veramar Apartments.

Of course there are also many Fuengirola villas to rent, most of which are located on urbanisations such as campo Mijas and Las Acacias a few minutes away by car from the resort centre and beaches. Here you can expect to rent a 3-bedroom villa with swimming pool and air conditioning for approximately €1000 a week.

There are three golf courses within a short drive of the resort centre which are the El Chaparral Golf Club, Club de Golf Mijas and the Torrequebrada Golf Course.

Just outside Fuengirola are two golf courses:

Fuengirola bars recommended by holidaymakers include Coasters Bar, Lolas Bar, Jacksons Bar, London Pub Fuengirola, Bar La Paz Garrido, Bodega El Toston and the Smile Bar.

Fuengirola is known for its nightlife with the most popular hotspots named as the Discoteca Mai Tai, the London Underground, Bogart Café, Mahama, the Coyote Fuengirola, Rambo Ocio and the El Templo Copas Bar Fuengirola. The neighbouring resort of Benalmadena is also worthy of a visit for the nightlife enthusiast – see our reviews of Benalmadena nightclubs & bars .

Moving to Fuengirola

If you are thinking of moving to Fuengirola, then you must read our expat interview with Daniel Holmquist , marketing and IT manager at Alamo Costa del Sol Real Estate below:

Daniel, what would you say would be the advantages to living in Fuengirola compared to other Costa del Sol towns?

Fuengirola, with its near 70,000 inhabitants is the centre of many of the Expat communities on the Costa del Sol. The train from Malaga, by way of the airport, has its last stop here. There are many reasons why so many of our clients prefer Fuengirola. You don’t need a car, several international schools, churches, associations are located in Fuengirola. Many of the businesses in the area are owned by foreigners and the majority of shops have English speaking staff.

However, apart from the expat communities, Fuengirola is a Spanish town with a pulsating everyday life that keeps the city moving also in the winter. The town is located only 20 minutes’ drive from Malaga airport and it has the longest and most beautiful beach promenade on the coast. 8 kms with generous cycle and pedestrian lanes are lined with hundreds of restaurants and bars. Just outside Fuengirola is Mijas Golf with two 18-hole golf courses.

Would the area not suit certain types of people, i.e. are there any possible downsides?

If you don’t like the pulse of a small city, but prefer the countryside, you might find Fuengirola a bit too busy.

What proportion of the local population are Spanish?

It’s approximately 50% Spanish and 50% foreigners.

What are your favourite things to do in the area?

I enjoy having a nice meal with my wife in the different types of restaurants that Fuengirola can offer. I also enjoy going to the beach and playing football with my friends at one of the local sports centres.

Can you give us some insider tips to the best bars or restaurants?

Of course! I have a few favourites, but I can really recommend these:

1. El Rancho de Salva , great meat restaurant in central Fuengirola 2. El Río , fantastic restaurant in Los Boliches with specialties such as Steak Tartar and Fondue 3. El Tostón , renowned traditional Spanish restaurant in the heart of Fuengirola 4. Chiringuito Antonio Videra , Traditional Spanish fish restaurant on the seafront in Los Boliches 5. Indian Balti , traditional Indian restaurant on the seafront in Torreblanca 6. Sawasdee , traditional Thai restaurant on the seafront in Torreblanca

Are there many facilities such as doctors and dentists, shops etc?

Yes, of course! You can find a wide selection of different types of services and in your own language!

Are there smaller villages nearby that you might also recommend?

Mijas, 10-15 minutes’ drive, is a traditional Andalusian village with white-wash little houses and narrow streets.

castillo_de_sohail_09

What are the nearest international schools and how good are they?

Fuengirola has Swedish and Finnish schools and a British College can be found in nearby Torremuelle, only 10 minutes by car. The Norwegian school is in nearby Arroyo de la Miel, also about 10 minutes by car.

Is crime an issue for expats?

Like in every town, there is crime, but it is not something you notice on a day-to-day basis.

Coming onto buying property, what is the market like now in terms of prices going up, or down or staying the same?

Property prices have slowly started rising again, after hitting rock bottom less than a year ago.

Is this a good time to buy and are there any repossessions or very cheap properties still available to buy?

Fuengirola has always been a very attractive place to live, but since the property prices have only recently started turning upwards, now is a great time to buy. Opportunities can always be found even though Bank repossessions are not very common.

puerto_de_fuengirola

What urbanisations are there and can you describe each one and how they might differ from each other?

There are many, but I would like to mention these in particular:

Puebla Lucia

Puebla Lucia is a quiet and peaceful oasis in the heart of Fuengirola. This is a fenced off area with large swimming pools and tropical gardens, but most of all, it is calm and relaxing right in the middle of town! Puebla Lucia was built in the 1980s and is considered the most attractive area of Fuengirola. Puebla Lucia has received several architectural awards for its authentic Spanish building style.

Los Boliches

Los Boliches is a district of Fuengirola, situated in the eastern parts of town. Like the town centre, Los Boliches is an urban area with mostly apartment blocks and a few rows of townhouses. In the blocks closest to the sea, you have the busiest parts and this is also where you have most of the bars, restaurants and shops. You also have several supermarkets and a smaller version of the Corte Inglés department store, all this within walking distance! A few streets up from the beach you have a smaller area of townhouses, which are very attractive due to their central location. Los Boliches has its own train station, so it is easy to go to the airport or further on to Málaga.

Torreblanca

Torreblanca is a district of Fuengirola, with Los Boliches and Los Pacos as its closest neighbours in the municipality. It is a quiet area, but at the same time near the city pulse of Fuengirola and the wonderful seafront Paseo Maritimo. Most of the properties here are villas and townhouses, but you can also find a few apartment blocks. Torreblanca has its own train station and several bus stops, or if you prefer to go by car, Fuengirola is only 2 minutes away. The Malaga airport is roughly 20 minutes away by car.

How much are the typical property prices in Fuengirola for apartments, villas etc?

It depends a lot on situation, views, distance to beach etc, but a 2-bedroom, 2-bathroom apartment is usually priced between 180,000 and 240,000 euros. A 3-bedroom townhouse is usually priced between 250,000 and 350,000 euros and a villa from 400,000 euros and up.

Any tips and advice to people looking to buy in Fuengirola or surrounding area?

Since the real estate business is different in Spain to many other countries and agents are in most cases members of collaboration networks, choose one agent that you feel comfortable working with and has good knowledge and experience in the area you are looking to buy a property in and stick to that agent. That agent will then look for a property not just in its own listings but also collaborating agents’ listings and help you through the whole sales process. Of course, we hope that we at Alamo Costa del Sol Real Estate can be your choice of agent!

Daniel, thank you so much for taking the time to help our readers with your experiences in Spain. If you want to contact him, you can find his details below.

Benalmadena or Fuengirola, which is better?

Both are fairly similar, they are close together on Spain’s Costa del Sol, they are large tourist resorts with great beaches so of course they both have plenty of restaurants, bars and things to do but our choice would be Fuengirola because it seems more authentic and Spanish due its history as a former small fishing village.

Torremolinos or Fuengirola, which is better?

Both are popular tourist resorts on the Costa del Sol but Torremolinos is bigger and close to Malaga airport so this makes it better if you want more nightlife as well as a wider choice of restaurants and bars. Fuengirola also has plenty of facilities and things to do and see so choose this if you prefer a smaller city.

We have lived in fuengirola 3 times in the last 18years. The Spanish people are very friendly and helped us to settle into our rented apartments each time we relocated. Our English friends were there to support us whenever something cropped up that was challenging. We also made friends with lots of other people from different cultures in the many bars and restaurants along the paseo. The area has its own eco climate and with lots of things to do and see for all age groups. We still holiday there as and when possible although we are now living back in Manchester England. We will always have half our hearts firmly in Fuengirola . Fantastic place to live and for holidays.

I am a South African, looking at relocating to Malaga, Spain in 2016 as my partner is a Doctor and has landed a great opportunity there. He has an EU passport but I don’t.

I am a qualified Public Relations Officer and Personal Trainer. I currently run the social media, communications and employee management department at M&D Health (multi- disciplinary medical and wellness brand). I am also a personal trainer. I have a vast amount of experience and knowledge in dealing with people (whether it be waitressing, au airing, personal training, receptionist duty, public relations, people management skills and event co-ordinating).

We are coming to Spain in the beginning of next year but I would like to find out what opportunities there are for me beforehand so I can make contact with the relevant people (employees) and maybe even secure a job before I relocate permanently.

I would love to do something in my field of expertise but I am also open to whatever opportunities get thrown my way. I am a friendly, positive, extroverted individual with a passion for health, wellness, peoples satisfaction and hard work. My home language is English but I am in the process of learning Spanish which I am picking up quite quickly.

Any information you can provide me with would be much appreciated.

Many Thanks

What is Fuengirola?

fuengirola spain views from above the castle

Fuengirola is a famous Spanish coastal town in the Málaga province, part of the stunning Costa del Sol region.

This place is a popular tourist spot where you can chill on the beach, check out the port, and soak up the sweet Mediterranean air while enjoying some excellent meals. The weather is fantastic too!

The town is rich with fascinating ancient landmarks that offer a glimpse into how people lived in the past. It has numerous places that provide a window into the era of Muslim Spain, a time when different religions and cultures coexisted in the region.

It’s very unique to witness all that history come to life before your eyes.

Plus, you can use it as a base to explore other southern cities since everything is so close by. It’s the perfect spot for your Spanish adventure.

Best Things to Do in Fuengirola

1. explore the historic heights at castillo sohail.

sohail castle fuengirola spain

It’s located at the mouth of the Fuengirola river, on a small hill that’s 38 meters above sea level, right in the middle of Costa del Sol Highway.

It’s a fantastic spot to see a wide range of coastal areas dominated by the Sierra de Mijas and where you can find the town of Fuengirola.

The area where this location is situated has always been a great place to live, and it’s no surprise that both the Punics and Romans have lived here since ancient times.

sohail castle arch fuengirola spain

In fact, the remains of their settlements can still be seen today! It’s believed that they built a beacon tower during the Caliphal era (10th and 11th centuries), but there’s not enough evidence to prove it.

So, a few years after the Independence War, the Castle lost its military function and was put up for public auction. Then, it went into civilian hands, but sadly, it was abandoned for quite some time until the second half of the last century.

sohail castle from outside fuengirola spain

You’ve got to check out this amazing place! And guess what? It won’t even cost you a penny to enter!

Moving on, the Castle was abandoned until the 1980s. The Workshop School then restored it and turned it into a cultural hub for hosting events in Fuengirola.

2. Seaside Stroll at Paseo Marítimo & The Espigón de la T

puerto de fuengirola fuengirola spain

The Fuengirola Promenade is a must-visit spot in the city, occupying most of the coast with stunning views of the Mediterranean Sea. It spans seven kilometers, perfect for walking and outdoor sports enthusiasts!

One of the best things about the promenade is its accessibility; it’s easy to access any beach area from here. Additionally, the promenade has a bike lane and is very close to bars and restaurants.

There are many points of interest along the route, including El Puente Armada Española, Plaza Teresa Zabell, monuments, the famous Roman Columns of Fuengirola, and many more.

espigon de la t fuengirola spain

However, the Fuengirola Marina and the Espigon de la T are two spots that stand out. The port is home to various restaurants specializing in “fried fish” (a delicious dish typical from the South of Spain), and you can even take the ferry to Benalmádena from there. There are also several cocktail bars and pubs of all kinds.

The Espigon de la T is a legendary viewing spot in Fuengirola, where you can observe the Mediterranean Sea, take stunning pictures, and see Fuengirola from a unique perspective.

3. Embrace Cultural Diversity at Fuengirola Central Mosque

fuengirola central mosque fuengirola spain

The Fuengirola Central Mosque is a beautiful example of Arab influence in the southern cities of Spain, and it’s worth a visit.

The mosque has a modest yet charming design and is located just 1 km southwest of Sould Park. During salat-ul-jummah prayers, you can hear the younger imam reciting the Quran with a melodic voice, which is impressive, in my opinion.

If you’re a history buff or love exploring new places, I highly recommend checking out this mosque. It’s a great way to learn about the area’s cultural roots, especially if you haven’t visited other Muslim cities in Spain.

If you’re interested in discovering unique spots like this one, you should also check out the city of Cordoba. It’s genuinely one of the best places anyone should include on their first trip to Spain!

4. Have Fun With the Family at the Park

aquamijas fuengirola spain

If you are on a family vacation and are struggling to find fun activities for your kids, don’t worry! I’ve been there myself, so I know it can be challenging. However, I have great news: Fuengirola has many fantastic activities for families with kids!

One of my favorite places is AquaMijas, a great water park in Fuengirola that offers many slides and activities for the whole family. It has many hammocks to relax and sunbathe, changing rooms and toilets, a picnic area, a restaurant, and a bar.

biopark fuengirola spain

Still, if you’re planning an extended stay and want to check out a different spot, Biopark is a unique animal park that respects nature. You’ll see these fantastic creatures coexisting in habitats that mimic their natural environment. Excellent for a great afternoon with kids!

But if you want to experience the most typical form of amusement parks, then Sould Park is the one for you! It is an amusement park perfect for children and families with many games and structures that will keep your kids entertained for hours!

There are trampolines, jumping beds, and even a bouncy castle! Plus, there are plenty of other games to enjoy, like mini Scalextric, motorcycles, free fall towers, trains, and even a space for duck fishing. And if that’s not enough, there is also a flyer and a balloon carousel!

The park uses a rechargeable card system that is super easy to use. You can load the card with money and use it to play games. Plus, multiple children can use the same card, and the balance never expires!

Oh, and last one, if you want to enjoy a natural, lush, and well-kept environment, Parque del Sol is the place for you. Visitors are greeted by many trees and colorful flowers, creating a serene and pleasant setting to walk or chill on a bench.

5. Discover “The Old Town” Charm

plaza de la constitucion fuengirola spain

Fuengirola has no historic center, unlike its neighboring cities like Marbella or Málaga. However, locals refer to a place called “The Old Town,” which is worth checking out! It includes the main post office building and Plaza de la Constitution.

Now, if you’re wondering what to do in the “old town” of Fuengirola, you’re in luck! You can do plenty of things like strolling around, enjoying a nice lunch, and people-watching from a terrace.

Speaking of lunch, Picoteo Restaurant is one of my favorite spots to have a quick meal and enjoy the afternoon. They serve delicious tapas, and the atmosphere in the center of the Plaza is excellent.

Moreover, these sites are very close to all other landmarks. So, don’t worry about finding things to do. Fuengirola is a walkable city, so there’s time for everything.

Also, make sure you save this spot for later since bars and nightclubs are spread out closer to the coastline on the edge of the old town.

Best Time to Visit Fuengirola

views from the sohail castle fuengirola spain

The best time of the year to visit Fuengirola is definitely in Summertime! In this period, there is a warm temperature and almost no rain. The highest average temperature in Fuengirola is 28°C in August, although it can reach scorching temperatures above 30°C.

However, if you’re planning a trip to the South of Spain, it’s recommended to visit during the months of April, May, and early June, which is Spring. This is when most cities in Southern Spain bloom with vibrant colors, and numerous festivals occur.

I mean, traveling to Fuengirola means high chances that you’ll also want to explore other cities in the region. Therefore, Spring is an ideal time to travel to this city and enjoy its beauty without a doubt.

How to Get to Fuengirola

coche de caballo fuengirola spain

There are a few ways to get to Fuengirola, but you first need to know it is located on the Costa del Sol, right next to the beach.

  • Fly to Málaga and get to Fuengirola by car .

The closest Airport to Fuengirola is the Malaga International Airport. So, you can get from any big city like Madrid, Barcelona, or Seville to Málaga and then head to the Costa del Sol via the A-7 highway.

If you plan to rent a car and explore Andalucia, I recommend checking out your car rental company in advance since the nearest Airport is in Málaga. Also, consider that there’s a toll at the AP-7 toll highway.

However, if you’re on a budget and don’t have any luggage, I’d recommend taking the C1 train, which connects the center of Málaga to Fuengirola from the Airport.

Plus, the journey is lovely, offering stunning views over the sea and the mountains. But if you do have luggage, consider a door-to-door transfer instead. It is much easier and will save you effort.

Another option is the bus. However, it’s the most time-consuming. You can take it from Madrid, for example, and the average train ticket costs around €21 - €55, and the journey takes six h 55m Iryo or Renfe AVE. (Both are very reputable train providers)

But, if you’re already in the South, then it’s easier; from Estepona, Granada, Algeciras, or Portillo, you can take a bus to Fuengirola and also to many cities in the province of Málaga and other cities in Andalusia.

Things to do in Fuengirola, Spain

These are the best Fuengirola attractions and activities that you can easily do in two days:

1. Visit Sohail Castle

Sohail Castle in Fuengirola, Spain.

One of the best Fuengirola attractions is Castillo de Sohail (Sohail Castle), a Moorish castle situated next to Fuengirola’s river on a small isolated hill. The castle was built in AD 956. However, the castle has gone through important restorations since then.

The most important restoration was made in 1485 when the castle was occupied by the Christian armies battling against the Nasrid Kingdom of Granada. Later, this castle aimed to improve its coastal defence due to its strategic position.

Nowadays, you can visit the castle for free, but you must have a look at the opening days and times because concerts and other cultural events take place in the castle, especially during the summer months.

The best thing about visiting Sohail Castle is walking the walls as you get beautiful seaside views.

2. Take a photo in Puente de la Armada

Armada bridge in fuengirola

This bridge was built in 2006 and was given the name “Puente de la Armada” because Fuengirola wanted to recognise the work that the men and women of the Spanish army did.

Nowadays, it’s a popular spot for photographers who try to take the perfect picture from different angles.

3. Go shopping in Fuengirola

If you love visiting shopping centres wherever you go, Miramar Shopping Centre must be on your list. It’s located near the motorway, close to Puente de la Armada and Castillo de Sohail.

The shopping centre has over 140 shops – including popular brands such as H&M, Primark and Zara. In addition to this, you can also find restaurants, a leisure area and a cinema. Overall, it’s a good shopping spot near Malaga .

All the shops are open Monday to Saturday; however, restaurants, coffee shops, and supermarkets have different times.

4. Go-karting

Located next to Miramar shopping centre, you’ll find Karting Experience Fuengirola , which has two circuits – the adults’ circuit is almost 500 metres long, and the kids’ circuit is about 200 metres long.

It’s open Monday to Sunday, and you can also relax at their cafe terrace.

5. Walk along the paseo marítimo

Seafront promenade in Fuengirola.

Paseo marítimo de Fuengirola is a long seafront promenade with many shop, restaurant and bar options. In addition to these, you can also find important monuments like Monumento de la Peseta and many activities for kids, including Sould Park – a small amusement park for children.

The promenade is often lively, but if you want a relaxing walk, you want to go for a walk in the early morning when you’ll only find a few early bird locals running.

6. Go to Aquamijas

When visiting Fuengirola in the summer, you want to check out Aquamijas Water Park. This water park is smaller than Aqualand (one of the best water parks in Spain ) – located in Torremolinos – but it’s still fun.

Some of its popular attractions are the Kamikaze, the wild river and the crazy loop, but you can also find more relaxing ones, such as the Jacuzzi and the Blue Lake.

Aquamijas typically opens around the 10th of June and closes in the middle of September. If you want to save money, you get a 30 per cent discount if you arrive at the water park after 2:30 pm.

7. Contemplate Fuengirola Central Mosque

Fuengirola mosque.

Fuengirola Central Mosque is another sign of multiculturality in Fuengirola. This beautiful white mosque is located a few minutes walk from Fuengirola’s beach promenade and Fantasia Park.

The mosque was built in 1992 to welcome all Muslim expats in the Costa del Sol so they could all gather and connect with others who understood their religion.

8. Go to the street markets

Entrance of street market in fuengirola, spain.

Fuengirola hosts three different street markets – a traditional street market on Tuesdays and Sundays and a second-hand flea market on Saturdays.

The Fuengirola market on Tuesdays offers a wide range of products – anything from clothes and footwear to fruit and vegetables and sweets. The market opens every Tuesday unless a bank holiday happens on Tuesday.

The flea market has over 300 stalls where you can find almost anything – books in Spanish and other languages, bikes, furniture, kitchen accessories, music and much more. It’s definitely worth visiting this market if you love doing a bit of shopping!

Last but not least, the street market on Sundays is smaller than the one on Tuesdays or Saturdays. However, you can find products such as handicrafts, leather bags, etc.

All of these markets are open from 9 am to 2 pm.

9. Do water activities

Costa water park in fuengirola.

Apart from Aquamijas, Fuengirola offers other water activities for the most adventurous.

Parasailing is an example of pure adrenaline-water activity. Pirate Parasailing is one of the most popular companies in Fuengirola Harbour. Not only will you have fun, but you’ll also get amazing views of Fuengirola and other coastal towns such as Benalmadena.

If you’re looking for something for all ages, you want to check out Costa Water Park. It’s an inflatable course floating in the sea. You can find three Costa Water Parks in Fuengirola on the following beaches: Playa Fuengirola, Playa Los Boliches and Playa Carvajal.

For a more relaxing day, you can go on a boat tour from Fuengirola to Benalmadena . The boat trip takes about an hour, and you’ll get spectacular views of the coast.

10. Chill at Plaza de la Constitución

Church in fuengirola spain.

Located in the old town of Fuengirola, Plaza de la Constitucion is a lovely square where many locals meet to have a catch-up and relax on the benches in the shade.

It’s in this square where you’ll find Iglesia Virgen del Rosario, a very important church since this virgin is the patron of Fuengirola. Also, it’s the monument dedicated to the Magna Carta.

11. Have a traditional meal at Restaurante Palangreros

Restaurante Palangreros is situated near Bioparc Fuengirola and only 6 minute walk from Fuengirola Beach. It’s one of Fuengirola’s best restaurants.

The restaurant serves traditional Andalusian dishes like Pil Pil prawns and Mediterranean food too. Meat and fish are its specialities, and some of the most popular dishes are the seabass with lobster sauce and the pork loin.

The prices are moderate to high, but it’s worth trying its delicious dishes. Apart from the normal menu, they also have special and tasting menus.

If you love wine, Restaurant Palangreros have incredible regional wines too.

12. Spend half-day at Playa Los Boliches

Los boliches Beach, Fuengirola.

Fuengirola beaches are very good regarding accessibility, cleanliness and things to do.

Los Boliches Beach is the best beach in Fuengirola, and its Blue Flag is just proof of this. This is a dark sand beach where you can rent a sunbed and beach umbrellas to relax or have fun with water activities such as pedal boats or Costa Water Park.

The beach is also connected to a lovely long promenade with plenty of food and entertainment options.

13. Go to Bioparc Fuengirola

Entrace of Bioparc zoo in Fuengirola.

One of the best things to do in Fuengirola for families is to visit Bioparc.

Bioparc is the only zoo in the Costa del Sol, as Selwo Aventura in Estepona is more like a safari. This zoo is characterised by its architecture that bends with the habitat of the animals and makes you feel like you’re on another continent.

The park is divided into four sections: Madagascar, Equatorial Africa, Southeast Asia and the Indo-Pacific islands. In the zoo, you can find more than 200 species of animals, such as tigers, gorillas and crocodiles.

Personally, I think that Bioparc Fuengirola is one of the best things to do in Fuengirola with kids, but it’s also a great activity for anyone who loves animals.

📌 Book your tickets for Bioparc Fuengirola here

14. Have delicious pancakes at Cafe Nomad

Cafe Nomad vegan pancakes

Cafe Nomad , situated on the seafront of Fuengirola, is the perfect cafe for those who love healthy but delicious food.

Whether you’re looking for a sweet breakfast or a light lunch, Cafe Nomad has anything from traditional English breakfast and falafel salad to sweet crêpes. They also offer gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan options, which you won’t find in most cafes and restaurants in Fuengirola.

I tried the vegan pancakes, which were the best I’d ever had. The dish consisted of four small vegan pancakes with a generous bowl of seasonal fresh fruit and agave syrup.

If you’re after juices and smoothies, they’re delicious too!

15. Sip a cocktail at Sky Bar

Who doesn’t love a rooftop terrace with a view? Wherever I go, whether it’s Fuengirola or anywhere else by the coast, I love having a meal or drink facing the sea.

Sky Bar is inside the Hotel El Puerto, and they offer fantastic boozy drinks but also small bites.

They also have live music during the summer, making it even more special.

16. Watch the sunset at Playa del Ejido

Sunset at the beach.

Playa del Ejido, located on the border with La Cala de Mijas, is the perfect spot to watch the sunrise or sunset. What’s best about this area is the beautiful seaside views combined with the castle and Armada Bridge.

There are also restaurants and bars where you can relax while enjoying the atmosphere and picturesque landscape.

17. Attend Feria Internacional de los Pueblos

Cristina and friend at Feria de los Pueblos in Fuengirola.

One of the best events in Fuengirola is Feria de los Pueblos, which is held for 5 days at the end of April every year.

This fair aims to celebrate the multiculturality in Fuengirola by showcasing countries from all over the world – Cuba, Germany, the UK, Morocco, Peru, Ireland and many more!

You can expect live music, food stalls serving delicious international dishes, dances, and colourful customs.

I’ve attended the fair with friends a couple of times, and I had a blast. It’s truly one of those events you don’t want to miss in Fuengirola.

18. Go on a dolphin-watching tour

One of the best activities to do in Fuengirola is going on a dolphin-watching tour.

You can just relax, contemplate the beautiful coastal and mountain views and have a good time with friends or family while keeping an eye on the sea to spot dolphins.

This highly-rated dolphin-watching yacht tour lasts two hours and includes live commentary as well as a drink.

19. Let the kids play at Sould Park

Sould Park in Fuengirola, Spain.

If you’re travelling with your little ones, you’re probably looking for kid-friendly activities in Fuengirola.

Sould Park, located in Fuengirola Beach Promenade, has fun attractions for kids, from inflatable castles and trampolines to carousels and train rides.

They are open every day, except when the weather conditions aren’t good. In any case, it’s worth checking out their timetable .

20. Dance the night away

Having a night out might be in your plans, and if so, Fuengirola and its surroundings have plenty of nightclubs where you can dance the night away.

Some of the most popular nightclubs in Fuengirola are Discoteca Oasis, famous for its Latin American music, and Coltán Fuengirola.

Pub O’Brien and Dylans Bar are good options if you aren’t bothered about dancing and prefer a pub.

Things to do near Fuengirola

21. go on a day trip to malaga.

malaga port view

Malaga is one of the best day trips from Fuengirola, as it’s only a 34-minute drive. When visiting Costa del Sol , you want to check out the main city and all its cultural activities.

Malaga isn’t a small city; however, you can find most of the city centre’s main attractions, making them easy to visit in one day .

Some of these must-see attractions include La Alcazaba , a beautiful fortress palace, the Roman Theatre, Gibralfaro Castle, and the impressive Malaga Cathedral . Although it seems a lot to visit, all of these historical buildings are very close to each other.

If you’re after museums, Picasso Museum Malaga is one of the most visited museums. In this museum, you’ll learn everything about the famous painter and can even get involved in painting or ceramics in one of their workshops.

Other things to do in Malaga that you can include in your one-day itinerary are shopping in Calle Larios, eating tapas at El Pimp i , exploring Malaga’s Park or wandering along the port.

22. Visit the nearby village of Mijas Pueblo

Viewpoint in Mijas Pueblo, Spain.

Nestled in a mountain is the whitewashed village of Mijas Pueblo. If you’re wondering why you’ve seen there are two Mijas, Mijas is divided into two parts – Mijas Costa and Mijas Pueblo.

Mijas Pueblo is a village you can’t miss during your Costa del Sol trip. One of my favourite things to do in Mijas Pueblo is to contemplate the spectacular view from Mijas’s viewpoint – the contrast of the sea and mountains.

From this viewpoint, you can also find Ermita de la Virgen de la Peña, a lovely chapel inside a cave. Even if you aren’t religious, you’ll want to go inside because of how unique this small church is.

Wandering through the town is also a good idea. The food and independent shop options are endless.

23. Explore Benalmadena

Colomares Castle in Benalmadena, Spain.

Another perfect day trip from Fuengirola is Benalmadena . Not only is it close but the town has lots of activities to do – from green spaces and beautiful beaches to unmissable cultural monuments and adventure attractions.

If you aren’t scared of heights, the Benalmadena cable car offers the best views of the town and coast. It also takes you to the top of the mountain, Calamorro, where you can enjoy the fauna and flora and go on a hiking trail.

For those who love immersing in the place, a visit to Benalmadena Pueblo is a must. The old town is beautifully decorated with white-coloured buildings and colourful flower pots hanging on the terraces, and you can visit Colomares Castle .

Colomares Castle is a hidden gem in Benalmadena. This monument, in the shape of a castle, was built in memory of Christopher Columbus’s life and adventures. Despite its small size, I can guarantee you it’s worth seeing. I love its architecture.

24. Go on a day trip to Marbella

A street in Marbella old town with pink and yellow flowers hanging down the buildings.

Despite its party and luxury reputation, Marbella has more to offer than that – excellent beaches, a beautiful old town and hiking routes.

When visiting Marbella, you must visit the old town – whitewashed buildings, bougainvillaea flowers hanging down the buildings, the lively square of Plaza de Los Naranjos and a wide range of independent shops. It’s my favourite part of Marbella!

If you’re visiting Marbella in the summer, Marbella has beautiful beaches, such as Playa de Nagüeles and Playa de la Bajadilla, where you can have a relaxing day.

25. Spend the day in Gibraltar

top of gibraltar, one of the best things to do in gibraltar

1 hour and 30 minutes from Fuengirola, Gibraltar is one of my favourite day trips because it’s such a unique destination.

Gibraltar belongs to the UK, but the moment you step in, you can see the mixture of cultures you can find in this British overseas territory.

When visiting Gibraltar, you can’t miss out on the opportunity to go to Top of the Rock. Not only will you see the famous and cheeky macaques (Gibraltar monkeys), but you will have a breathtaking view of the ocean and Africa .

Other great things to do in Gibraltar include shopping at Gibraltar Main Street, visiting the Alameda Botanic Gardens and spending the day at Catalan Bay.

How to get to Fuengirola

How to get to Fuengirola from Malaga-Costa del Sol Airport (AGP)

The quickest way to travel from Malaga Airport to Fuengirola is by car. There are plenty of rental cars outside the airport, but you can compare prices and hire a car online in advance to save time and money.

If you don’t want to hire a car for your holidays, another good option is to take the RENFE Cercanías train. You’ll need to get in the C1 line towards Fuengirola. The train journey takes 35 minutes, and it’s very affordable.

The last option is to book a taxi or private transfer to your hotel. This is the most expensive option, but it can be good if you travel in a group and split the costs.

I agree! I love the fact that it’s in between Malaga and Marbella too.

I lived in this area for almost a year and didn’t actually go into Fuengirola because I thought it was just for people who like the beach. Definitely going on my list for next time though!

I had the same perception about Fuengirola, but I’m glad I still visited it and discovered all these great places.

What a cool town! I always love seeing castles and any sort of history, but I also love the water. I love that this town offers both so you can mix up your activities!

I love that too! There is nothing better than finding different activities to do at a destination.

Fuengirola looks like such a beautiful place to spend a few days! I would love to wander around, visit the castle and the beach and also eat at Cafe Nomad!

I am glad you like it! It’s definitely worth visiting the castle and eating at Cafe Nomad 🙂

What a stunning area! I love the historical buildings like Sohail Castle and the day trip to Colomares Castle…they are both stunning!

Add in all the fun in the water and that fantastic food, and it sounds like a peeerfect holiday!

They are both incredible historical buildings! I am sure you would love them.

I am happy that you have discovered a new place by reading the blog. Cafe Nomad is definitely a good option, their pancakes are amazing.

I am glad you liked the itinerary!

Fuengirola’s sandy beaches are one of the main attractions that drew us to the area.

Fuengirola has four blue flag beaches including Castillo beach, Fuengirola beach, Los Boliches-Gaviotas and Carvajal. The dark sand beach of Santa Amalia is another must-visit.

boy in green t-shirt playing in front of castle

Sohail Castle is Fuengirola’s castle.

Sohail Castle is a castle located in Fuengirola, on the Costa del Sol in southern Spain.

It was built in the 9th century by the Moorish rulers of al-Andalus, and later served as a fortress for the Christian kings of Castile.

Today, the castle is one of Fuengirola’s most popular tourist attractions, with visitors coming to see its well-preserved defenses and enjoying the stunning views from its hilltop location.

Whether you’re interested in history or just looking for something fun to do, Sohail Castle is worth a visit.

There is no cost to enter the castle. Be prepared for a steep walk – but the views are worth it.

The ruins at the site of the Finca del Secretario are located between Fuengirola and Mijas Pueblo.

The ruins are part of a former Roman villa that was used for over 700 years, from the 2nd to 9th centuries AD.

Today, visitors can still see the remains of houses, baths, aqueducts, and more as well as learn about the fascinating history of this site.

The roman ruins at Finca del Secretario are a must-visit for anyone interested in learning more about the rich history and culture of Spain.

These Roman ruins in Fuengirola were discovered when the site was being excavated for roadworks back in the 1950s.

They have since been excavated and can now be visited by tourists looking to see a piece of Spain’s ancient history first-hand.

The ruins are set on a hillside, offering visitors not only a beautiful backdrop but also some sweeping views over the surrounding landscape.

And have a coffee or drink at El jazzy bar – one of our top places to eat in the local area.

The Centro Comercial Miramar is a great place to get some respite from the heat in the summer months (and has excellent shopping).

Home to major brands like Carrefour, Primark, Zara, Vans, H&M, Guess, C&A, JD Sports, and loads more plus an excellent food range.

There is also a cinema, indoor karting, and a play area for younger kids.

Fuengirola is home to loads of parks and playgrounds.

I challenge you to find a street that doesn’t have a small play area behind multi-colored fence posts.

Some of the best include Parque Fluvial de Fuengirola (Fuengirola River Park – just along from Miramar shopping centre), Mari Carmen Diez Park, Parque del Sol and Naranjos Park.

For a trip further afield, head to Benalmadena’s Parque de La Paloma – it’s our favorite park on the Costa del Sol.

Spend some time ambling down narrow streets while you explore Fuengirola Old Town – a hidden gem waiting to be discovered.

Tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the city centre, the old town is a peaceful oasis where you can easily spend a few hours exploring.

The narrow streets are lined with shops and restaurants, good for a stroll on a lazy afternoon.

Spain is well-known for its vibrant festivals, and the feria in Fuengirola is a perfect example.

Held annually in April , this week-long celebration features traditional Spanish food, music, and dance.

Visitors can also enjoy rides, games, and other attractions that celebrate the vibrant cultural mix of the surrounding area.

During the day, celebrations are quieter and more suited to families and children, with the entertainment and party atmosphere ramping up after dark.

The feria is open to everyone and provides a great opportunity to experience Spanish culture firsthand.

Fuengirola station is the end of the line running from Malaga.

This makes it an easy option when getting from Fuengirola to Malaga airport – plus it gives you easy access to Malaga city and all the stops along the way.

You can resort hop to Benalmadena or Torremolinos, go shopping at Plaza Mayor, connect to regional trains at Maria Zambrano for day trips further afield, or just have a day enjoying beautiful Malaga city.

The Renfe train system is very efficient and affordable. It’s a viable alternative if you don’t want to hire a rental car.

Fuengirola’s port is a great place to spend an afternoon.

The port is home to a wide variety of restaurants, bars, and shops, as well as a beautiful promenade that runs along the waterfront.

It’s the perfect place to take a walk, relax with a drink or enjoy the catch of the day, and take in the stunning views of the sea.

You can book a boat trip or fishing charter here too.

Black crowned crane at Bioparc Fuengirola

Bioparc Fuengirola is one of the best family attractions in Fuengirola and a super fun place to spend the day.

Easily walkable from the centre of town, this compact city zoo packs a lot in.

Formerly known as Fuengirola Zoo, Bioparc Fuengirola was opened in 2010 in response to the partnership with Bioparc Valencia.

Bioparc is unique in that it recreates the native environments that many of its animals hail from. This is possible due to the amiable climate on the Costa del Sol.

The recreated environments which include native vegetation include Equatorial Africa, Madagascar, Southeast Asia and Indo-Pacific.

There is a shady playground on site as well as ample room to enjoy a picnic lunch.

Check out the Bioparc Fuengirola website for more details.

Opened in 2015, Sould Park is a theme park on the beachfront, and part of the same entertainment group as the larger Festilandia-Sould Park in Benidorm .

We were lucky enough to attend the opening night in 2015 and our 2-year-old had a great time.

Entry is free with payment required for each ride. You buy a swipe card which can be topped up at the kiosks.

This is targeted at smaller children, although we saw children up to about 10 or 11 having fun.

Open evenings from 5pm to 9pm on the Paseo Marítimo del Rey.

The Paseo Marítimo or seafront promenade is one of the longest in Europe at 8 kilometers.

Starting from Fuengirola port, the promenade weaves its way along the entire coastline of Fuengirola, past all the beaches and the monument dedicated to the Peseta.

tourism fuengirola spain

The promenade is perfect for an evening stroll, a morning jog or cycle, or just to watch the world go by with an ice cream in hand.

tourism fuengirola spain

The beautiful Plaza de la constitución is located in the centre of Fuengirola.

Framed by shaded gardens and outdoor seating it is a lovely spot to sit and watch the world go by.

It is surrounded by independent shops as well as several local cafés and restaurants.

Take a moment at the Nuestra Señora Del Rosario church where you can sit and pray or reflect in silence.

Fuengirola has two main market days – Tuesday and Saturday.

Held in a street market style (just in case you were expecting a Mercado central).

The Tuesday market is a typical market day with gifts and souvenirs on sale, as well as trinkets, local artisans, fresh produce, and a good spattering of used items.

Saturday’s market is more of a car boot sale (flea market) with lots of second-hand goods that might be suitable for a home etc so head along on Tuesday if you are looking for more of a tourist-friendly activity.

Both markets are held at the Feria grounds.

If you like a stroll through central markets, the small Mercado Municipal Virgen Del Carmen in Los Boliches is nice.

Spain is well-known for its delicious tapas, and what better way to enjoy them than with a refreshing drink by the beach?

The beach bars in Fuengirola offer a perfect spot to relax and take in the stunning views, whether you’re sipping on a glass of chilled white wine or savoring a cold beer.

And of course, no visit to a beach bar would be complete without sampling some of the delicious tapas on offer  (which often come free with your drink purchase).

From fresh seafood dishes to traditional Spanish tortillas, there’s something to suit everyone’s taste.

The Plaza de Toros in Fuengirola was built in 1962 and now stands proudly in the heart of the old town.

It hosts bullfights and equestrian events with seating over 4,000 people.

Whether you’re a fan of bullfights or not, a visit to the Plaza de Toros is an unforgettable experience.

17. Hit the Water Parks

Fuengirola is lucky to have two water parks close by – Costa Water Park and Aquamijas.

The Costa Water Park is a seasonal water park containing an inflatable playground with massive slides, balance bridges, and surfboards.

It is usually set up in the shallow waters near Los Boliches.

CostaWaterPark is open from the middle of June to the middle of September from  11:00am to 08:00 pm. Depending on the weather, the CostaWaterParks will be built up in the first or second week of June.

Aquamijas is a permanent water park that opens for the season from early April until late September.

Home of the Wild River and Kamikaze rides plus the famous Crazy Loop, Aquamijas is one of the most fun things to do in Fuengirola.

The park has sunbeds available for hire or bring a towel so you can lie on the grass for free. You are also allowed to bring your own food in.

That said there are plenty of food options for the usual suspects – burgers, chips etc.

Make sure you book your ticket online before you visit, this saves 15% off the price at the window.

With its whitewashed buildings and winding streets, Mijas Pueblo is a charming Andalusian village that offers visitors a taste of traditional Spanish life.

Located just a short drive from Fuengirola, Mijas Pueblo is the perfect place to escape the heat and enjoy some of Spain’s best food and wine.

The village is also home to several small shops and galleries, making it a great place to pick up souvenirs or find unique gifts for friends and family back home.

Fuengirola is a great base for exploring the wider Costa del Sol.

While the town itself has plenty to offer in terms of beaches, restaurants, and shops, there are also many great attractions to be found further afield.

A popular option is to take a day trip to one of the nearby towns or villages.

This might include visiting the fishing village of Nerja, exploring the Roman ruins at Acinipo, or checking out the view from Gibralfaro Castle in Malaga.

You can even take a day trip to Morocco – although it is a very long day.

Plenty of vendors arrange day trips with pickup from your accommodation included.

Tips for Visiting Fuengirola – Frequently Asked Questions

tourism fuengirola spain

If you’re looking for a seaside resort town in southern Spain, you may be wondering whether to choose Benalmadena or Fuengirola for your next holiday.

Both are popular choices, and each has its unique charm.

Fuengirola is a bustling city with a lively atmosphere, while Benalmadena is more relaxed and laid-back.

Fuengirola has more to offer in terms of shopping, nightlife, and restaurants, while Benalmadena is a great choice if you’re looking for a quieter time.

Both towns have beautiful beaches and plentiful outdoor activities, so it comes down to what you’re looking for in a vacation.

If you want to party the night away, Fuengirola is the place for you.

But if you’re after a more chilled-out vibe, then Benalmadena is the perfect spot.

Editors note: Our personal preference is Fuengirola – we found it really was the perfect blend of city amenities and resort, all located nearby.

Benalmadena requires a very steep walk between the Coast and the Pueblo which is not something we enjoyed doing with a toddler in the heat.

We found there were more things to do in Fuengirola that suited our family.

It’s no Magaluf (thank goodness!) but Fuengirola is a lively town with plenty to see and do.

The town centre is full of shops, restaurants, and bars, and there’s always something going on.

The beaches are also great – there are eight to choose from, all with different atmospheres.

Playa de Fuengirola is the busiest beach, with plenty of activities on offer, while Los Boliches is a little quieter and more relaxed.

There’s also a lively nightlife scene in Fuengirola, with bars and clubs open until the early hours.

The answer to this question is yes, you can walk from Fuengirola to Benalmadena.

The two towns are located nearly 7 miles (or 11km) apart, and there is a direct walking route that connects them.

The walk takes around 2.5 hours to complete, and it is relatively easy, with only a few gentle hills.

However, there are a few things to bear in mind. Firstly, the weather in Fuengirola can be quite hot, so make sure to wear sunscreen and a hat and take plenty of water with you.

Secondly, the route can be quite busy at times, so it is advisable to walk during the cooler hours of the day.

Finally, there are a few sections where the pavement can be narrow or uneven, so take care when walking.

With these things in mind, you should have no problem walking from Fuengirola to Benalmadena.

If it gets too hard just find the nearest bus stop along the route. The M120 bus travels from Torremolinos to Fuengirola via Benalmadena every half an hour.
