Tour de France winner Jonas Vingegaard, wearing the overall leader's yellow jersey, celebrates after the twenty-first stage of the Tour de France in Paris on Sunday.

PARIS — Danish rider Jonas Vingegaard has won the Tour de France for a second straight year as cycling's most storied race finished Sunday on the famed Champs-Élysées.

With a huge lead built up over main rival Tadej Pogačar, the 2020 and 2021 winner, Vingegaard knew the victory was effectively his again before the largely ceremonial stage at the end of the 110th edition of the Tour.

Vingegaard drank champagne with his Jumbo-Visma teammates as they lined up together and posed for photos on the way to Paris.

It had been a three-week slog over 3,405 kilometers (2,116 miles) with eight mountain stages across five mountain ranges. Vingegaard seized control of the race over two stages in the Alps.

Little had separated the two rivals until Vingegaard finished a time trial 1 minute, 38 seconds ahead of Pogačar on Tuesday, then followed up the next day by finishing the toughest mountain stage of the race almost 6 minutes ahead of his exhausted rival.

"I'm dead," Pogačar said.

The Slovenian rider responded by winning the penultimate stage on Saturday, but Vingegaard still had an insurmountable lead of 7 minutes, 29 seconds going into the final stage — a mostly ceremonial stage which is contested at the end by the sprinters.

"We have to be careful not to do anything stupid," Vingegaard warned Saturday, "but yeah, it's amazing to take my second victory in the Tour de France."

Belgian cyclist Jordi Meeus won the final stage in a photo finish between four riders on the line, just ahead of Jasper Philipsen, Dylan Groenewegen and Mads Pedersen.

"It was my first Tour. It was a super nice experience already so far, and to take the win today is an incredible feeling," Meeus said.

Jonas and Jumbo Win Yellow

Ciccone in Polka Dots

There are few things more difficult than defending a Tour de France title, but Jonas Vingegaard proved up to the task. The quiet Dane showed up in Bilbao prepared, fended off two weeks of attacks from the explosive Tadej Pogačar, and proved strongest in the decisive third week of the biggest race on earth. A stage win in the hilly Stage 16 time trial, followed by a massive time gain on the Stage 17 climb to Col de la Loze, saw Vingegaard win the Tour by 7 minutes and 29 seconds. Team Jumbo-Visma also wins the overall Teams classification by over 13 minutes.

Jonas Vingegaard attacks on the Col de la Loze during Stage 17 of the 2023 Tour de France

Vingegaard took advantage of the gearing versatility of RED eTap AXS to optimize his setup for specific stages. In all, the yellow jersey rode four different gear options over three bike models. His time trial bike was set up with 56/43 chainrings and a 10-33 cassette, and his lightweight Cervélo R5 had 52/39 rings and either 10-33 or 10-36 cassette, depending on the mountain stage. On many lumpy and flat days he even had an aero S5 built with a 1x drivetrain, using a 52T chainring and 10-36 cassette. The 1x build allowed Jonas to have his aero bike as close to the UCI weight limit as possible, while rivals had to switch to climbing bikes as the road went up.

Gearing gallery

The Tour de France is about so much more than yellow, and Giulio Ciccone spent the final week on the attack in the mountains, grabbing the polka dot jersey on Stage 15. In the break over every mountain, he secured the points to stand on the podium as the Tour’s best climber. Lidl-Trek also comes away with a stage win with Mads Pedersen victorious on a hard uphill sprint on Stage 8.

Jonas Vingegaard Just Won the Criterium du Dauphiné. Can He Win the Tour?

The Dauphiné is regarded as being the biggest indicator to what we can expect in the upcoming Tour de France.

75th criterium du dauphine 2023 stage 7

By the time the eight-stage Dauphine finished, the 26-year-old Danish star was two-minutes-and-twenty-three-seconds clear of UAE Team Emirates’ Adam Yates and two-minutes-and-fifty-six-seconds clear of Ben O’Connor of AG2R Citroën. It was the largest margin of victory in the Dauphiné in twenty years.

The final stage featured a monstrous climb up to the Bastille Fortress, which came just after the riders climbed the fabled Col de Porte. Yates attacked on the latter, but could not hang on the Porte, as Vingegaard followed eventual stage winner, Trek-Segafredo’s Giulio Ciccone, up the ultra-steep climb.

Vingegaard crossed the line twenty-two seconds behind Ciccone, locking in his third WorldTour stage-race victory (in addition to being the defending Tour de France champion, Vingegaard won this April’s six-stage Itzulia Basque Country).

This race is a Tour de France preview

Given the race’s parcours over some of the most brutal corners of the Alps, combined with it being scheduled weeks before the Tour de France, the Dauphiné is regarded as being the biggest indicator to what we can expect in the Tour.

75th criterium du dauphine 2023 stage 7

With his performance last week, Vingegaard did a lot to silence any doubters, especially those who wondered whether his quiet spring was the right move .

It also further sets the stage for one of the most anticipated matchups in recent cycling history; Vingegaard versus Pogačar, the Tour’s two overwhelming favorites.

It’s a battle that many of us have been eagerly anticipating for almost a year now. And now, thanks to the popularity of the Netflix series Tour de France:Unchained , which—among a dozen other stories—tells of Vingegaard’s storybook win over Pog in last year’s Tour , it’s one that a whole new crop of bike racing fans is looking forward to.

Can Vingegaard beat Pogačar at the Tour de France?

The wrist Pogačar fractured at this year’s Liège-Bastonge-Liège will no doubt play heavily into the storyline of the two lightweight heavyweights. But if we’ve learned anything in the last few years, it’s that betting against Tadej Pogačar is often an exercise in futility.

But just a few days ago, after weeks spent working out on the trainer in his kitchen, the Slovenian wunderkind was cleared by doctors to resume his full training regimen . According to a recent report by Cycling News , Pogačar headed to the Italian Alpine resort Sestrière alongside Yeats and another of his key domestiques, Rafał Majka, to start reconning and preparing for the Tour in earnest.

75th criterium du dauphine 2023 stage 6

As for Vingegaard , he’s taking a few days off before turning his own final screws to prepare for the Grand Départ on July 1.

Asked how he was feeling after the Dauphiné, Vingegaard exuded some of his now-trademark quiet self-assuredness, while promising that we haven’t quite seen everything he’s capable of.

“I would have confidence in myself,” he said. “But I do still think I can get a little bit better.”

Tour de france power: the numbers behind vingegaard’s tt and sepp kuss on the col de la loze, literally no one expected vingegaard to beat tadej pogačar by one minute and 38 seconds in stage 16’s time trial..

In this column, we dive into the power numbers of the world’s best riders at the Tour de France .

No one expected this. Not a single person in the entire world – not even Jonas Vingegaard himself – thought that Vingegaard would beat Tadej Pogačar by one minute and 38 seconds in stage 16’s time trial.

In the first 15 stages of this year’s Tour de France, Jonas Vingegaard and Tadej Pogačar had been neck and neck. The duo had dropped each other once or twice and taken a few bonus seconds here and there. But coming into the time trial, most experts predicted Pogačar or Vingegaard would beat the other by a handful of seconds.

Without hyperbole, the time trial that Jonas Vingegaard executed on stage 16 was arguably the greatest time trial performance in cycling history. That includes all eras, riders, climbs, and comebacks. It was hard to believe the live timing as the results flashed across the bottom of the screen.

“20 seconds faster” than Wout Van Aert in the first 4km of the stage 16 time trial. How is that even possible?

It was true, and Vingegaard was already 31 seconds ahead of Pogačar at the base of the Côte de Domancy. While we don’t have Vingegaard’s power data, we can see from his speed that he was already head and shoulders above the rest of the Tour de France field.

tour de france jonas vingegaard 2023

Vingegaard – Start to T2 (Second time check) Time: 19’ 05” Average Speed: 50.6 kph (31.4 mph)

Pogačar: 19’ 36” at 49.3 kph

Next was the climb to the finish at Combloux, which began with the Côte de Domancy (2.8km at 8.5%). After 19 minutes of riding full gas on the TT bike, Vingegaard produced the most insane climbing performance I’ve ever seen. There is no comparison to the power and speed that Vingegaard did on the climb to Combloux.

The 26-year-old Dane pushed ~7.5w/kg for over 13 minutes on his time trial bike, which is one of the most incredible performances in cycling history.

tour de france jonas vingegaard 2023

Vingegaard – Climb to Combloux Time: 13’ 21” Average Power: ~7.5w/kg

Pogačar: 14’ 38” at ~6.7w/kg

These power values were estimated using a variety of data, including years of historical power data from this exact climb to Combloux. The exact power numbers will never be 100%, especially when you consider calibration factors, temperatures, power meter brands, and more. But all that matters is that Jonas Vingegaard went insanely fast up the climb to Combloux, and I can say with 99.99% certainty that he did well over 7.3w/kg for 13 minutes…after already time trialing at 50.6 kph for 19 minutes.

Neilson Powless went full gas on the Côte de Domancy in an attempt to gain points in the KOM classification. The American ended up going one second faster than Pogačar on this segment, though the Slovenian did a bike change, which cost him roughly 10-12 seconds. Vingegaard was 33 seconds faster than Powless and did not do a bike change, which meant that the Dane was riding his heavier TT bike up the 11% grades. That meant that Vingegaard was putting out even more power relative to Powless, who was on an ultra-light road bike.

tour de france jonas vingegaard 2023

Powless – Côte de Domancy Time: 7’ 20” Average Power: 430w (6.5w/kg)

Vingegaard: 6’ 47” at ~7.5w/kg

Pogačar: 7’ 21” at ~6.5w/kg

No one in the world thought that Jonas Vingegaard was capable of a performance like this. His team was confident in him, but I’m sure they were shocked when the time gaps popped up on screen. Vingegaard won the Stage 16 time trial with a time of 32 minutes and 26 seconds, 1:38 faster than Pogačar in second, and 2:51 faster than Wout Van Aert in third.

Jumbo-Visma has had to answer a lot of questions in the last few days, as can be expected in the sport of cycling. Mathieu Heijboer, Jumbo-Visma’s Head of Performance, said that Vingegaard did seven months of preparation for this TT, including three sessions a week on his time trial bike. The team also used data from the O Gran Camiño and Critérium du Dauphiné time trials to help plan Vingegaard’s Stage 16 effort.

The Jumbo-Visma team directors actually feared for Vingegaard when he flew out of the start gate and took 16 seconds by T1. At the Critérium du Dauphiné, Vingegaard went out too hard in the 31.1km time trial with an incredibly similar course profile to Stage 16 of the Tour de France. On that day, Vingegaard was fastest at T1 by 12 seconds, but then lost his legs and ended up finishing 2nd on the stage behind Mikkel Bjerg.

But on Stage 16 of the Tour, Vingegaard had the best legs of his life. He thought his power meter was broken, he said in a post-race interview, because the numbers were so high. However, the data suggests that Vingegaard had one of his best rides ever – you could even say it was one of the greatest cycling performances of all time.

Ever the sportsman, Vingegaard said, the Tour isn’t over until it’s over (basically) – next was the queen stage of the 2023 Tour from Saint-Gervais Mont-Blanc to Courchevel. The stage included over 5,300 of elevation gain in 166km, including a summit finish atop the longer version of the Col de la Loze at 2,300 meters. Jumbo-Visma said that their original plan had been to attempt to crack Pogačar on this stage, but would that change after Vingegaard took nearly two minutes in the TT?

tour de france jonas vingegaard 2023

After a massive breakaway formed in the first half of Stage 17, Jumbo-Visma began pacing hard on the second climb of the day, the Cormet de Roselend (19.8km at 6.1%). The peloton shrank to just a few dozen riders, and that pce continued on the penultimate climb of the Côte de Longfoy (6.7km at 7.5%).

As the peloton hit the lower slopes of the Col de la Loze (28.3km at 6%), Pogačar began drifting to the back of the group. Not long after, he fully unzipped his jersey and seemed to be struggling. The only other time I remember seeing Pogačar fully unzip his jersey was on the hot, high-altitude climb to Granon, where Vingegaard famously cracked Pogačar to win the 2022 Tour de France.

Just a few kilometers later, Pogačar was dropped. Vingegaard and his super domestique, Sepp Kuss, could hardly believe their eyes as they kept turning around to find Pogačar. But the Slovenian was long gone, and he would eventually finish 22nd on the stage, over five minutes behind Vingegaard.

Despite his rivals already being minutes behind him, Vingegaard attacked on the Col de la Loze, dropping every one of the GC contenders and starting to challenge for the stage win. Up front, Felix Gall put on a climbing clinic, holding an estimated 6.1w/kg for 34 minutes on the way to his first-ever Grand Tour stage win.

Vingegaard went more than a minute faster than Gall over the final 11.2km of the Col de la Loze, despite getting momentarily stuck behind an official’s car.

Back in 2020, the Tour de France raced up this same section of the Col de la Loze, where Miguel Ángel López took the win ahead of Primož Roglič and Pogačar. Sepp Kuss was 4th on that stage, and he posted his power to Strava. The American did 6.1w/kg for over 34 minutes during that effort but was ~40 seconds slower than Gall’s 2023 time.

tour de france jonas vingegaard 2023

Kuss – Col de la Loze 2020 Time: 34’ 47” Average Power: 366w (6.1w/kg)

Vingegaard: 33’ 00” at ~6.3w/kg

Her er Vingegaards hjælpere i Touren

Jonas Vingegaard's bike: A custom yellow Cervelo S5 for the Tour champion

The Dane rode two custom-painted Cervelos during the Tour

An all yellow Cervelo S5 for Jonas Vingegaard

What is Jonas Vingegaards bike for 2023?

What size is jonas vingegaards bike, jonas vingegaards cervelo s5: specifications, jonas vingegaards 2023 tour de france cervelo s5.

Jonas Vingegaard successfully defended his 2022 Tour de France title again this July. After three weeks of battle and one of the most exciting Tour de Frances in years he once again found himself standing victorious atop the winner's podium on the Champs-Élysée as the sun began to set on the 2023 tour .

Vingegaard hasn't put a foot wrong this year, the quiet and unassuming Dane's victories perhaps come and go with a little less fanfare than some of his rival's more explosive wins, but 2023 has witnessed a scintillating run of form and victories for the 26-year-old.

Stage wins and an overall victory at Gran Camiño in February opened Vingegaards account for the year. He then followed this up with a third place to Tadej Pogacar and David Gaudu at Paris Nice, before winning ways were quickly resumed with another overall stage race title at Itzulia Basque Country as well as a solo victory on the final day.

Another overall World Tour victory came before the Tour when Vingegaard claimed the overall at the Critérium du Dauphiné by over two minutes from Adam Yates. All of the new tech being rolled out for the race also prompted us to create a mega-tech gallery.

We haven't covered as many of Vingegaards machines as some other riders so far, but we have little doubt that there will be plenty of other custom and winners bikes added to this list in the coming years.

Vingegaard and the other riders on Team Jumbo Visma ride Cervelo bikes and have a few models to choose from on the road. Cervelo offers the Cervelo S5, R5, P5, and Caledonia models for riders to use. The P5 is the brand's time trial bike, and the Caledonia is a model that is seen mainly at the early season classics.

Vingegaard has ridden the Tour and other stage races this year riding the R5 and S5 models. The R5 is the brand's lighter-weight climbing bike, which the Dane rode a lot in the high mountains. The S5 is a more aero-focused bike which focuses on speed for flatter terrain, it also features an eye-catching integrated bar and stem.

Vingegaard arrived at the tour with a custom-painted S5 which featured some personalised graphics and star constellations. He then was provided with a custom yellow S5 for the final stage of the Tour when victory was assured.

As far as we know (we haven't asked him personally) Jonas Vingegaard weighs roughly 60kg and is about 175cm tall which puts him in the prime Grand Tour winner dimensions category. We believe the Tour winner rides a size 54cm machine.

The integrated Cervelo S5 stem actually has a positive rise, but there aren't many spacers under the stem for the Dane, and we assume overall it's a fairly aggressive position given the short head tube.

He rides 172.5mm cranks, Wahoo Speedplay pedals and chooses not to run his Sram brake levers turned in as is the aero-focused trend currently.

For the 21st stage of the Tour Vingegaard rode a custom yellow Cervelo S5, as is usually the case for the overall Tour winner.

We got hold of studio shots and pictures of the actual bike Vingegaard rode into Paris and there are some differences to be spotted between the two. The studio bike has custom yellow Reserve wheel decals, a nitride gold Sram chain and cassette and even yellow Sram brake lever logos.

For the stage itself, the S5 Vingegaard rode had a regular silver (but still very top-end) Sram Red chain and cassette, black handlebar tape and a drive-side yellow Sram logo on the chainset. He also used a 1x chainset for the last stage, which is predominantly flat. Although no stages were won on 1x chainsets the technology is seeping into road stages more and more as we discuss in our piece on the tech trends from the Tour .

An all yellow Cervelo S5 for Jonas Vingegaard

Vingegaard turned professional in 2019 with Team Jumbo Visma and has been riding for the team ever since. In that time claiming two Tour de France titles for your employers isn't a bad record.

The team have been through one bike supplier change during this time, switching from Bianchi bikes to Cervelo for 2021. Prior to that, the team raced on the top-end Bianchi Oltre XR4 bike, which at the time was a rim brake model.

The team have had Cervelo S5 and R5 bikes to choose from over the last few seasons, but had to acclimatize to a host of new equipment when they switched from Shimano to Sram equipment. Several other sponsors came on board such as Nimbl shoes and reserve wheels.

Vingegaard arrived in France just before his dominating ride unfolded with a custom painted Cervelo S5 bike to ride. This black and yellow bike had a 'night sky' theme, with star constellations across the paintwork, a map of France on the top tube as well as the message 'ride your dreams'. A few motivational touches from the folks at Cervelo that certainly seemed to inspire the Dane.

One standout tech feature of the bike to our eyes was the Vittoria tyres. The Corsa Speed tyres from Vittoria are mostly tubular tyres, and while they are available in a tubeless-ready format they only come in 23c or 25c. Vingegaard's tubeless tyre ) but is a 28mm model, so we think it's either a new width of the currently available model or just a yet to be released new tyre version.

Jonas Vingegaard seals overall victory at Tour de Pologne

J onas Vingegaard sealed overall victory at the Tour de Pologne after he finished safely in the peloton stage 7 to Krakow, which was won by his Visma-Lease a Bike teammate Olav Kooij in a bunch sprint.

Kooij delivered a well-judged effort in the finishing straight to claim the stage honours ahead of Tim Merlier (Soudal-QuickStep) and Gerben Thijssen (Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert). In an unruly bunch finish, Kooij bided his time before coming off Thijssen’s wheel within sight of the line and holding off the fast-finishing Merlier.

It was Kooij’s second sprint win of the week and his seventh victory of a season that included a triumph in Naples on his Grand Tour debut at the Giro d’Italia.

Sunday’s flat final stage from Wieliczka to Krakow was always liable to yield a bunch sprint but that didn’t deter an enterprising group of four riders from spending the bulk of the day off the front.

Archie Ryan (EF Education-EasyPost) has caught the eye every time the road climbed this week in Poland and the Irishman opted to go on the offensive once again on Sunday despite terrain that was hardly suited to his gifts.

Ryan was joined in the break by Jack Rootkin-Gray, Rémi Cavagna (Movistar) and Marcin Budziński (Poland), and the quartet struck a decent working relationship to stay clear onto the three laps of the 5km finishing circuit around Krakow.

By then, a bunch sprint was inevitable, but Ryan and Budziński battled gamely to stay clear until midway through the final lap. From there, the sprinters’ teams took up the reins, even if no single team could control affairs.

DSM-Firmenich-PostNL had numbers in support of Casper van Uden, but he had to settle for fourth as his fellow Dutchman Kooij scorched to a clear victory.

Vingegaard had an untroubled final afternoon of racing, and the Dane was happy to play his part in helping Visma-Lease a Bike tee up a bunch finish for Kooij.

In the final overall standings, Vingegaard finished 13 seconds clear of Diego Ulissi (UAE Team Emirates) and 20 ahead of his Visma teammate Wilco Kelderman.

The Tour de Pologne is Vingegaard’s third stage race victory of the season following his triumphs at O Gran Camiño and Tirreno-Adriatico earlier in the year.

Vingegaard’s season was interrupted by the serious injuries he sustained in a mass crash at Itzulia Basque Country in April, but he returned in time to win a stage and finish on the podium of the Tour de France last month.
