How to Test Your Internet Speed in macOS

macos finder icon

After you've joined the Wi-Fi network that you want to test, the tool is accessed via the command line, so you'll need to open the Terminal console (found in Applications/Utilities ) and type in the following at the command prompt:

networkQuality

Press Enter , and the tool will begin to output the results of the test after about 15 seconds. When the test is completed, you'll see a summary of these results, which include the more nebulous upload/download flows, and more usefully, a real-time measurement of your internet connection's upload and download speed in Mbps.

terminal

Apple has a support document that helpfully explains what these classifications mean:

Low: If any device on the same network is, for example, downloading a movie or backing up photos to iCloud, the connection in some apps or services might be unreliable, like during FaceTime video calls or gaming. Medium: When multiple devices or apps are sharing the network, you might see momentary pauses or freezes, like during FaceTime audio or video calls. High: Regardless of the number of devices and apps sharing the network, apps and services should maintain good connection.

If you're trying to troubleshoot a poor internet connect, this tool can be especially useful as a repeatable test when experimenting with different configuration settings and comparing the effects.

iPhone 12 issue?

I usually love this app. I have used it on iPhones for years and years. And it worked fine on my wife's iPhone 8 and on my iPhone 11 ProMax. A few days ago we upgraded to my iPhone 12 Pro Max and she loves her new iPhone 12 Mini. But both show a disappointing incompatibility with the Ookla Speedtest app. The Ookla app on my iMac (2019) works great. It shows my Mbps speed to be at or even over the 300 Mbps line I pay for. But when I run the app on both my new iPhone 12s I get the exact same results of very low speeds shown. Sometime measures under 100, usually around 150. I take care to match the chosen server to the one the Mac is using and it is an incredible difference. Had I only bought the one iPhone I would likely have put on my mask and gone to the Apple Store. But two iPhones doing the exact same thing? So I dwonloaded a competing speedtest app which I do not usually like as much as Ookla. That app works fine on both the 12 Max and the 12 Mini. Measurements all pretty much match the Mac's Ookla results at 300 . I think this shows the problem is in something Ookla is not allowing for as to some sort of change in the iPhone 12. I hope that the Ookla team will touch base with Apple and fix this. Note I have given this app 4 stars as I really love it and have used it for years and years. BUT IF YOU HAVE AN IPHONE 12 THERE MAY WELL BE A SERIOUS PROBLEM. Let's hope it to be temporary so I can dump the speedtest I don't like.

Great App for holding ISPs accountable

I love using this app to check my internet speed. Having recently switched from AT&T to Comcast, I wanted to make sure I was getting my money's worth. At first, I didn't see an improvement and in some cases worst performance even though I was paying $50 more per month. Then I figured out that it was how my VPN to my workplace was throttling things and have since come up with a workaround. I would suggest it would be helpful to have the tool show where the "bottlenecks" might be in performance so the layperson can learn more quickly why their actual performance isn't as expected. The other improvement I would suggest would be to making it easier to find an "optimal" server. Some times that can be delayed with no explanation. With those two improvements, I would give this app a "5-star" rating

Just notice that you had a Mac Desktop app!!

I have been a longtime Ookla Speedtest user for many moons…. I retired from IBM in 2008 with 30 years of working with computers/networks Speedtest has been my go to network test for as long as I can remember. I always found that depending on your web browser you could get different results and its far better to have a local run application to cut out as much of noise from applications to get a truer picture of what your results are. This app is well put together and the options it gives you are just what is needed with no extra fluff. The response is quick and the reporting is reliable, free from all the overhead of the browser and any cache etc that can and would be in the way. The options of saving your test along with running it in the menu bar and haveing the capability of uploading it to about 23 different places (depending on your Mac’s configuration) listed under your System Preferences/Extensions/Share Menu You still have the option of selecting where you want to test to. If is set automaticly to the closest point from you ISP. The graphical interface showing in a line graph of both incoming and outgoing testing shows how smooth or dirty you results can be. With showing a more flatline giving you the cleaner results of your ISP.

Tips & Tricks

Troubleshooting, how to test internet connection speed on mac.

How to Test Internet Connection Speed on Mac

Wondering how fast your current internet connection speed is? It’s super easy to find out how fast your internet connection is, all you need is a web browser to find how fast or slow your internet service is.

We’ll be covering how to check internet connection speed using a Mac with any web browser, but technically this connection speed testing process is the same on any other computer or device with a web browser too, including any iPhone, iPad, Windows PC, Linux, Android, or other hardware.

How to Easily Test Internet Connection Speed on Mac

Ready to see test your internet speed? Here’s all you need to do:

  • Open any web browser on the Mac, like Safari, Chrome, Firefox, Brave, Epic, Edge
  • Go to https://fast.com and let the page load, it immediately loads a speed test into the web browser
  • Wait a few moments to get your reported internet connection speed

By default the speed test will show only download speeds, but if you click on “Show More Info” at the bottom of the results the browser will run a second speed test to check internet connection latency and upload speed too.

All of this data can be helpful for troubleshooting and planning what type of internet services and features you may use or have available.

Many things can impact your internet connection speed, including internet service provider, service quality, network quality, wi-fi routers, wi-fi interference, distance from wi-fi routers, other network activity, and much more.

High performing internet providers and services in major metro areas should be ultra fast and highly stable, with very high speeds that allow for large downloads and uploads and flawless 4k streaming on multiple devices in the same household.

But as you can see in the screenshots here, the internet connection currently being tested is quite slow in compared to a high speed connection you’d find in a major city. Nonetheless the slow speed shown is a fairly typical internet connection speed for semi-rural and rural areas of America even barely outside of major metro areas (in this case, the slow internet service shown is the top internet offering available in a smaller town just outside of a major US city, hooray for infrastructure?), and also fairly typical of what sort of internet connection speed you might find in undeveloped and developing parts of the world, whether as a resident or traveler. Not everyone has access to the super fast broadband services available in major global cities and suburbs! This is something important to keep in mind as developers, who are often concentrated in major metro areas with superior internet service, though they can use features to simulate slower internet connections if they’re interested in doing so.

Checking internet connection speed on Mac web browser

This speed test service is provided free (by Netflix) and can help to determine what your internet connection speed is and requirements might be for using various streaming services, cloud services, and other stuff that requires internet connections.

For example, with a slow internet speed like the one shown, doing large iCloud backups is a huge challenge and can take weeks to upload or download. Likewise, using iCloud Photos may not be ideal on this type of internet connection because the speed is too slow to handle a large photo library syncing across devices. Even some network games like Fortnite or Warcraft may have latency issues due to the connection speed, making them challenging to play.

You can also runspeed tests from the command line if you need to.

Note that your active internet connection is not going to be the same as the wi-fi connection link speed shown in Network Utility , which is more representative of a maximum possible speed rather than the actual connection speed.

As mentioned before, you can use fast.com to test internet connections on iPhone and Android too, or you can use dedicated Speed Test apps for mobile speed tests if you’d like.

FireFox v76 is now 75% slower when looking at fast.com, as compared to other browsers.

Bye, bye FireFox.

Have to wonder at the accuracy since it shows me at 16 MPS and Speedtest run right after shows me at 152 Mbps. That is several magnitudes difference. In practice, I’ve found Speedtest reflects my actual experience.

Gotta wonder the price for a domain name like that. Especially in “.com” land!

Using a IPhone 6s+ in rural Maine I tested as follows:

Verizon LTE Fast 3.8 Mbps OOKLA 40.7 Mbps

Consolidated Communications DSL (25Mbps Rated) Fast 23. Mbps OOKLA 22.4 Mbps

Why is the Fast test so off base on cellular?

I thought fast.com only measured the communication speed with Netflix itself, not general internet speeds. I am probably wrong on this.

FWIW, on my Mac I use Ookla’s speedtest app, which I got directly from the App Store: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/speedtest-by-ookla/id1153157709?mt=12

It’s also available for iOS as well as on the AppleTV (which is my only hardwired connection in my house).

(FWIW, I’m using the Orbi system these days, with its dedicated 5G ethernet backhaul, which is a godsend in the house. Before, I was pulling at absolute best 40% of my hardwired speeds, now I’m usually at about 90% to 95%, if not 100%.)

Cannot use Speedtest.com on Mac running Big Sur 11.0.1

For some reason I cannot run a speed test using https://www.speedtest.net/ . i always used to be able to.

I can run speed tests using every other service like Google Speed Test. I can use the SpeedTest App on my iPhone no problem, so not my network that's the issue. Only on my Mac. I have also tried tinkering with privacy and content setting with no luck.

Does anyone have an answer to this?

I was able to run a speed test this morning in Safari 14.0.2 on Big Sur 11.1 without any issues — with and without any VPN connection. There must be something at your location, or with your ISP that is causing this issue, and it may be temporary.

Shutdown your Mac. Power off your router, and your ISP modem. Wait five minutes, then power up the ISP modem, and when it is fully operational, then power on your router, and when it is operational, then power up your Mac. Before attempting the speed test again, clear out your browser's cookies and cache.

Jan 12, 2021 10:22 PM in response to VikingOSX

Thanks for that.

Did all that still not working. It's definitely something on the system. My wife's new Macbook Air with Big Sur runs a speed test on Speedtest.net no problem, so does my iPhone. So definitely my machine.

I'll have to keep tinkering around until something gives :)

If you are using an older Speedtest.net application on your Mac, it may be Flash dependent and that is now gone. Try speedof.me which is HTML5 based in your browser of choice.

Jan 12, 2021 5:33 AM in response to VikingOSX

FWIW, speedof.me has a recommendation to purchase CleanMyMac X. Bad them.

Jan 12, 2021 5:42 AM in response to dialabrain

Agreed. But with my Ad and stuff blocker Safari extension, there are no advertisements of any kind on that speedof.me site.

Jan 12, 2021 5:46 AM in response to VikingOSX

Your "Ad and stuff blocker" must be better than mine because I see the ad on the bottom left of the page once the test runs in both Safari & Firefox. I haven't checked any others.

Jan 12, 2021 6:16 AM in response to dialabrain

The speedof.me site has been adding a deluge of advertisements, and I won't access it without the content blocker on.

Jan 12, 2021 6:29 AM in response to VikingOSX

Well, I have content blocking on and I don't see any ads other than the one in the corner after the test result. Beats me.

Jan 12, 2021 6:44 AM in response to dialabrain

Are you using the free Ad and Stuff Blocker from the Mac App Store. You would download, run, and close the app to install the Safari extension.

No. I didn't even know it was a "thing". I thought you were being "generic". It wouldn't help Firefox or Chrome, etc. anyway. Not to mention I have no reason to frequent speedof.me. :)

A good internet speed is at least 25Mbps download and 3Mbps upload. These internet speeds are the bare minimum for a broadband connection as defined by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). But you’ll get better results with an internet plan that supports download speeds between 40–100Mbps.

That said, no one wants to overpay for internet speed. You can use our How Much Speed Do You Need? How to Fix Slow Internet

10 Steps to a Faster Wi-Fi Connection

You need a faster router if your current router is using outdated Wi-Fi standards. Anything older than Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) or Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) doesn’t get you appropriate speeds equal to what’s capable on most high-speed internet connections.

Even a router that’s just a few years old might not meet appropriate speed standards, depending on your connection. Look into your router’s spects to see its Wi-Fi standards and max speeds and get a new router if it’s an older model. We have more information on when and how to replace an outdated router .

How to Replace Your Outdated Router

You can get faster internet by upgrading your internet plan. If you can’t upgrade your current speeds and feel stuck with bad service, you can also switch to a new provider.

Run a search with your zip code to see what kinds of speeds you can get in your area.

The fastest internet providers are Google Fiber, Verizon Fios, Xfinity, Metronet, and Cox. All of those internet providers offer fiber or cable internet plans with gigabit speeds. See our report on the Fastest Internet Providers .

View Fastest Internet Providers

A download speed of 25Mbps and an upload of 3Mbps is good for most people. That’s enough to let one or two Wi-Fi users play online games, stream video in HD, and attend Zoom meetings with minimal slowdowns or buffering. You will likely want a faster speed if you live in a larger household or do more activities online.

Not sure how much speed you need, exactly? Use our quick tool to test how much bandwidth you need for your home Wi-Fi network.

Why doesn’t my internet speed match my plan?

You likely won’t ever see the maximum speed advertised by your provider in the speed test, but your speed test results should come close. The speeds promised by your internet plan are the max speeds you can expect. Most of the time, your internet speeds will fluctuate within a small range of that max speed. What you see on the speed test is simply where your internet speeds are currently.

Internet providers will state “up to” when advertising maximum speeds because many variables can prevent you from hitting that top speed. You may even see disclaimers like “wireless speeds may vary” because Wi-Fi speeds are always inconsistent no matter what provider you choose—it’s just how Wi-Fi works.

For example, there may be issues with the provider’s service area, like faulty connections somewhere within the neighborhood. Speed may be slow because you’re using the internet at peak times, or your router may be outdated. Roots may be growing into the cable buried in your yard.

There are several reasons why your speed test results might not be as fast as you expected. Try these tips to see if you can get a more accurate reading:

  • Temporarily disable your firewall (but don’t forget to turn it back on afterward) and rerun the test.
  • Reboot your modem and router, and rerun the test.
  • Unplug your router from the modem, plug a desktop or laptop into the modem’s Ethernet port, and rerun the test.
  • If you have a wireless gateway rather than a separate modem and router, plug a desktop or laptop into one of the Ethernet ports, and rerun the test.

If you see inconsistent results, there might be a bottleneck on your end. You can troubleshoot poor internet speeds with our guide on how to fix slow internet . But your internet connection may just be slow either from your plan or your internet type.

If nothing helps, call your internet provider or look for a new one.

Here’s a brief overview of what your speed test results mean and how they affect your internet’s performance. For more in-depth information, check out our consumer’s guide to internet speed .

Download speed

The speed at which your device pulls data from the internet. Usually measured in Mbps or Gbps.

Upload speed

The speed at which your device sends data to the internet. Usually measured in Mbps or Gbps.

The time (measured in milliseconds) it takes for a signal to travel from your device to an internet server and back. Lower latency means your connection has a better response time for activities like gaming and livestreams.

A company that provides internet services in a local area. Examples include Xfinity, Spectrum, and Google Fiber.

Internet protocol address—the unique numerical code that identifies an internet-connected device and its geographic location.

The location of the server you connect to in order to run the speed test.

How do I test my Wi-Fi speed?

You can use our internet speed test to check your Wi-Fi speed. Just follow these steps.

Test your Wi-Fi speed with a separate modem and router

Step 1: Run our speed test on a smartphone, tablet, or laptop connected to your Wi-Fi network while standing next to your router and record the speed test results.

Step 2: Connect a wired desktop or laptop to one of the wireless gateway’s Ethernet ports.

safari wifi speed test

Introduction:

WiFi speed is an important factor when it comes to using the internet on your iPhone. With so many apps and online activities requiring a fast and stable WiFi connection, it’s essential to know how well your connection performs. Here are nine simple ways to check your WiFi speed on your iPhone.

1.Use the Ookla Speedtest app:

One of the most popular and widely used apps for checking WiFi speed on iPhones is Ookla’s Speedtest. Download the app from the App Store, open it, and press “go” to measure your connection’s download and upload speeds, as well as its ping.

2.Fast by Netflix:

Fast by Netflix provides a user-friendly interface for checking your WiFi speed. No need to download an app; simply open Safari and visit fast.com. The website will automatically test your connection and display a result in Mbps.

3.TestMy.net:

Another reliable internet speed testing tool available through your browser is TestMy.net. Open Safari on your iPhone, visit testmy.net, and click “start testing” to begin the process.

4.Analyze WiFi connections with Fing:

Fing is a versatile app that provides detailed information about WiFi networks, including their speeds. Download Fing from the App Store and tap “scan for devices” to gather insights into the performance of your current connection.

5.Measure network performance with Net Analyzer:

As its name implies, Net Analyzer offers in-depth analysis of network performance. Download the app from the App Store, launch it, and run the network scanner to receive comprehensive information about your WiFi connection – including its speed.

6.Check connectivity with Speedcheck Pro:

Speedcheck Pro is another dedicated speed testing app that measures both download and upload speeds of WiFi connections. Install it from the App Store, run a quick test, and view results in an easy-to-understand format.

7.Use Google’s built-in speed test:

Google offers a quick and easy speed test directly through Google Search. Open Safari, search for “internet speed test,” and tap the blue “Run Speed Test” button to initiate a quick assessment of your connection.

8.Try OpenSignal:

OpenSignal is an app designed to test and map mobile network coverage rather than WiFi speeds. However, WiFi performance testing is a lesser-known feature of the app. Download OpenSignal from the App Store, open it, and run the “Test Speed” function to check your WiFi connection.

9.Use Apple’s hidden Wi-Fi scanner:

While not explicitly designed for checking speeds, iPhones have a pre-installed Wi-Fi scanner that can provide useful information about your network. Go to Settings > WiFi > Choose a Network… to access details about available networks’ signal strength – generally, a strong signal will equate to faster WiFi speed.

Conclusion:

Monitoring WiFi speeds on iPhones couldn’t be easier with these nine methods at your disposal. Take advantage of these apps and online tools to ensure you’re always connected to fast and stable internet connections.

The M2 MacBook Pro blows our mind with this Safari speed test

Roman Loyola

We’ve gone over the benefits of the M2 over the M1 processor in our reviews of the new MacBook Air and 13-inch MacBook Pro , but there’s one benchmark we didn’t perform that everyone can relate to and demonstrates the M2’s prowess.

David Heinemeier Hanson ( @dhh on Twitter ) recently tweeted his results from Speedometer 2.0 , a test that gauges browser speed. He found that the M2 is 33 percent faster than the M1, and it’s also 2.5 times faster than the iMac running a 4.2GHz Core i7 CPU.

Apple's chip team continues to embarrass everyone else in the business. Just clocked a clean 400 on the Speedometer 2.0 test for the M2 Air. That's 33% faster than the M1 (and A15) can do. 2.5x faster than a 4.2Ghz i7 Intel iMac. Bananas. Try your own CPU: https://t.co/o25wL35Zu4 pic.twitter.com/WbBmys2bk1 — DHH (@dhh) July 31, 2022

The 400 score is mighty impressive, especially since we reported back in March that Google Chrome (version 99) and the Safari Technology Preview 15.4 (Release 141) posted scores at or close to 300. In fact, that 400 score is a 33 percent increase over that 300 score.

With Heinemeier Hanson’s tweet and our prior testing in mind, and that the browser is likely the most frequently-used Mac app by just about everyone, we thought we’d give Speedometer a run on the M2 and different browsers and see what happens. Here are our results.

How we tested

The Speedometer browser benchmark is made by the WebKit team at Apple and uses web-based applications and simulates user actions. The benchmark gauges the browser’s responsiveness to those actions and then creates a performance score. The higher the score, the better the performance. You can learn more about how Speedometer benchmarks performance , and Speedometer is available for anyone to use for free .

I ran Speedometer 2.0 on Safari 15.6, Chrome 104, and the Safari Technology Preview (Release 150). The hardware involved the following chips and Macs:

Results: M2 provides a boost

When I tested Safari 15.6, I experienced an 18 percent increase of the M2 over the M1. That’s a little more than half of what Heinemeier Hanson’s tweeted, but he compares the M2 to an M1 score that is not stated. As I pointed out earlier, a 33 percent increase would mean that the M1 posted a 300 score.

Our results are an average of three trials, and while I didn’t get an exact 400 score for the M2, I got an average just above that, and one of the trials actually scored 408. Our testing also found an 11 percent boost of the M2 over the M1 Pro.

The difference using Chrome 104 was smaller, with the M2 posting a 9 percent increase over the M1. Speedometer is a test designed by Apple, which may have something to do with Chrome’s showing here.

Another interesting tidbit as a result of this testing is that Chrome’s speed edge that Google bragged about in March is gone–again, Speedometer is an Apple-created test, so Safari has an advantage. On the M2, Safari is 18 percent faster than Chrome, and it gets better with the Safari Technology Preview.

The Safari Technology Preview is a beta version of the browser that Apple makes available to the public to test new features. Hopefully, the general public will get to feel the speed improvements that STP provides—it posted a whopping average score of 420 on the M2, with one of our trials hitting 425. The 420 score is 18 percent better than the STP on the M1.

What does this all mean? Safari is quite fast on the M2 and considering how much we are all on the internet, every optimization counts. But in the end, it doesn’t matter how fast a browser is, your experience is only as fast as your connection.

Check your internet browsing speed

The ScanmySpeed Internet connection test checks the actual browsing speed of your browser and internet connection. Your internet speed is tested by sending small packets of data over the network in a way similar to the way you browse a website. ScanmySpeed does not use Flash, Java or any external programs/add-ons to run these speed tests; it uses javascript, a component thats always present on your browser to check your browsing speed.

Speed Tests

ScanmySpeed provides express, normal and extended speed tests. The express speed scan tests your internet speed by sending and receiving smaller and lesser packets of data when compared to the normal speed scan. The express scan is thus a fatser way to check your speed but the results are less accurate. The normal scan sends and receives the recommended size and amount of data and therefore provides accurate speed test results. The extended speed scan sends and receives a lot of data and requests over your network. The results are most accurate but the test takes a lot longer that the normal and express tests.

What is FAST.com measuring? FAST.com speed test gives you an estimate of your current Internet speed. You will generally be able to get this speed from leading Internet services, which use globally distributed servers.

Why does FAST.com focus primarily on download speed? Download speed is most relevant for people who are consuming content on the Internet, and we want FAST.com to be a very simple and fast speed test.

What about ping, latency, upload and other things? When you click the “Show more info” button, you can see your upload speed and connection latency (ping). FAST.com provides two different latency measurements for your Internet connection: “unloaded” and “loaded” with traffic. The difference between these two measurements is also called “bufferbloat”.

How are the results calculated? To calculate your Internet speed, FAST.com performs a series of downloads from and uploads to Netflix servers and calculates the maximum speed your Internet connection can provide. More details are in our blog post .

Will the FAST.com speed test work everywhere in the world? FAST.com will test Internet speed globally on any device (phone, laptop, or smart TV with browser).

Why is Netflix offering the FAST.com speed test? We want our members to have a simple, quick, ad-free way to estimate the Internet speed that their ISP is providing.

What can I do if I'm not getting the speed I pay for? If results from FAST.com and other internet speed tests (like dslreports.com or speedtest.net ) often show less speed than you have paid for, you can ask your ISP about the results.

Important Things To Know About Our Bandwidth Test

How does our internet speed test work.

The Speakeasy Internet Speed Test is an HTML5, non-Flash bandwidth test, which checks your connection’s download and upload speeds using your browser. Our bandwidth test uses HTML5 technology and does not require any downloads to run. Bandwidth speed tests are typically used to check speed. However, our Speed Test Plus also checks line quality of the connection coming from your broadband provider.

Why Should I Test My Internet Speed?

A bandwidth speed test is an effective way for individuals and businesses to measure their connection. Broadband providers sell tiered packages based on speed, so it’s important to test regularly to make sure you are getting the appropriate return on investment. For organizations that use VoIP services, reliable broadband speed is a core necessity for the daily work of every employee. From conference calls to exporting large amounts of data, the speed of your broadband connection has a huge impact on your bottom line.

Terms You Should Know

Line Speed During the bandwidth test, the line speed shows the real-time download or upload speed we are seeing from your connection.

Download Speed The speed at which your Internet connection delivers data to your computer. This is the maximum amount of info your computer can receive from the Internet in a given second. Download speed is measured in Megabits per second (Mbps).

Upload Speed The reverse of download speed, this tracks the maximum amount of information that your computer can send to the Internet. This is also measured in Mbps.

There are many reasons why your bandwidth test results may be slower than you expected. The following tips may help increase your results:

  • Use a wired Ethernet connection instead of wireless to avoid any interference from things like household/office electronics, fluorescent lights, and even neighboring wireless networks
  • Pause or close any programs or in-progress downloads that are using your connection
  • Restart your router or modem and rerun the test to check internet speed

If after these tips you are still seeing slow speeds, contact your broadband provider for help diagnosing the issue. You can also check for faster bandwidth service available from Fusion Connect in less than a minute.

Tracking your Internet speed over a period of time is one way to ensure your broadband provider is performing as promised. If you are running our internet speed test on a desktop or tablet, your results are saved and can even be exported for your records. Directly below the internet speed test, click on "Results History" to expand your most recent results. If you are not seeing a saved history, please make sure to enable cookies in your browser’s settings.

Why do I get a “socket error” message? An error may result from having the speed test open in more than one browser tab or window. The test may fail to complete and display the following message: “A socket error occurred during the Upload test. Please try again later.”

To prevent this error, and get the most accurate test results, close all other browser tabs and windows before running.

Why is the location I usually pick missing from the City list? We first complete a latency test to our servers, and if a server does not respond within a specified time frame, it is not included in the City list.

A slow response can be caused by latency or packet-loss between the client and server, or particularly high Internet usage (during peak hours). Do try the test again in a little while.

In which browsers does the Speed Test work best? For best results, use the most recent version of your favorite browser. But at minimum use Firefox 53, Chrome 59, Safari 10, IE 11, or Edge 13 or higher. If you are unable to see Speed Test, though other content appears on the speed test page, check your browser's security setting. Try lowering the setting from High to Medium-High, or even a bit lower, to allow the broadband test application to load.

Why am I receiving “Could not connect to the Internet” errors when I am connected? In some cases, firewall and security software can prevent the test from running and generate a "could not connect" error. Temporarily lowering the severity should allow the broadband test to run. Be sure to turn it back on before leaving our website.

Why didn’t the test choose the server location nearest me? Our Speed Test automatically detects the optimal server host location for testing, which is not necessarily the closest server host. This is due to real-time network circumstances like number of hops, or current traffic load on each test server. Change the selection using the Change City drop down function directly underneath the Start Test button.

Why is my speed lower than expected? Several factors may slow your connection, resulting in lower-than-expected speeds. Try these simple suggestions below. But if your slower speeds persist, contact your broadband service provider to see if they can determine the issue.

  • Be sure to stop any downloads or programs that may be using your connection while running the test.
  • When using a wireless connection, there may be wireless interference. Try using a wired Ethernet connection instead.
  • Try rebooting your modem or router and then running the test again.

What is “Throughput” and what factors affect my results? There are many factors that impact your speed test results. Throughput problems in your local area network, IP or access overhead, and network design all play a role. Please read the definitions and examples below to learn more about these factors.

  • Download Download is a measure of how fast your connection delivers content to your computer or local area network.
  • Upload Upload is the measure of how fast content is delivered from your computer or local area network to others on the Internet. For businesses or power-users , download and upload speed should match or at least be very close. This is important for applications like VoIP, on-line gaming and other interactive programs. Upload speed is even more important if you are operating a server at your location. If achieving optimal upload speed is a concern, consider Dedicated Internet Access .
  • Kbps Kbps transfer rate = kilobit per second transfer rate. There are 8 bits in a byte, so we would divide kbps by 8 to get KB/sec transfer rate.
  • Mbps Mbps transfer rate = megabits per second transfer rate. 1000 kilobits equals one megabit. One megabit per second equals 1 million bits per second. Mbps is the industry-standard used by ISPs.
  • MBps MegaBytes per second. There are 8 megabits in one megabyte.
  • Transfer Rate
  • Transfer rate is speed at which data can be transmitted between devices. As files to download become increasingly larger, the highest data transfer rate is most desirable.
  • Throughput Throughput is the maximum amount of communication or messaging that can be transmitted through a communication channel during an elementary unit of time, usually, in a second. Depending on the type of channel, the addressing mechanism used in that channel, the type of messages are being transmitted and how secure the transmission needs to be—along with physical attributes like temperature, humidity and signal-to-noise ratios—actual measured throughput will vary.

An Example of Throughput You have Ethernet 8.0 Mbps service and need to transmit an email which is exactly 1MB in size You may expect it will take exactly 1 second to transmit that message. But it will actually take longer as the total information that needs to be transmitted is more than 1MB. The total information is called Payload . The channel needs to not only transmit the payload but also some addressing details like where it is coming from and where it is destined to.

The device that sends this email will break down the message into smaller pieces and package them into what are called IP Packets . The size of these packets is usually determined by your Local Area Network. Some have smaller size, so the message will take more IP Packets to transmit; while others may have larger size which needs fewer IP Packets. Each IP Packet also contains an IP Header . This is where the information like the source IP Address, the destination IP Address and additional information about the payload is included. IP Header is usually 20 Bytes (160 Bits) long.

Assuming that this customer uses 100 Byte payload, each IP Packet will now be 120 Bytes long. And that 1MB message will have to be broken down into 10,000 payload pieces. That means to transmit the whole message the channel really needs to transmit about 1,200,000 Bytes or 1.2 MB or 9,600,000 bits. It will take at least 1.2 seconds to transmit all these bytes on this 8 Mbps service assuming that all these IP packets with the payload arrive without any errors and not needing re-transmission. This is called IP Overhead .

Actual Throughput will always be less than line rate of the access service that is communicated by your provider—and this is all based on IP Overhead only. Ethernet services also have a Layer 2 or Ethernet Overhead . Other services may have ATM, Frame Relay or other kinds of Overhead depending on the design. All of this may contribute to a slower bandwidth throughput than what you are expecting.

Other frequent factors influencing throughput:

  • The number of devices sharing the access circuit and the activity the other devices are generating while the test is running
  • A rogue LAN port that is clogging the LAN with transmission
  • A leaky LAN port which degrades LAN performance
  • LAN signaling issues which create a lot of packet re-transmission for the devices on the LAN
  • LAN Router with performance issues, low processing power or Deep Packet Inspection and advanced security features like URL blocking enabled
  • Wireless Access Points on the LAN side
  • Distance (both geographical as well as number of hops) between the speed testing client and the server

Why do I see a license expiration notice? This notice is in place to protect our test from being stolen and run, mirrored, or framed into another website.

To remove this notice:

Make sure you are going to https://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ . We have software in place to block the test from being used in any other domain.

Also, you may have an older version of the test cached in your browser. Clearing your cache and Fusion Connect cookies should make the license expiration notice disappear.

How does security software and firewalls impact the test? Our internet broadband test sends packets of empty data back and forth to your computer in order to test your line speed. Since we are a third-party sending a receiving a tiny data packet from your computer to perform the test, some ad block or security services interpret this as an attack and act accordingly. Temporarily lowering the severity should allow the speed test to work. Be sure to turn it back on before leaving our website.

How do I save my bandwidth test results? Your most recent speed test results are saved in your Results History when tested on desktop or tablet.

Safari internet speed test 170mbps vs Google 790bps, why??

I have Mac air 13 M1 2020. Reformat Mac 4x and the same thing happens either with OS Monterey or Ventura 13.1 or 13.2. Mac running fresh installation, nothing else on it. When I run the speed test (tried few of them) with Safari and wired connection 1GB the speed is around 170mbps, install Google Chrome and speed is around 790mbps. Don’t understand how this could be and as I said I’ve reinstalled the Mac four times. However, running the Speedometer 2.1 Browser Bench the speed is about the same for Safari or Google at 350.

macrumors 6502a

Which speed test are you using? I tend to use www.fast.com . But I think you have to take all of this with a grain of salt. For instance I have 1.2 GB Comcast which is wired in to my Studio after a long run from the house to the garage office (and it goes thru a 1 GB switch) yet I still routinely get results in the 1.2-1.4 GB/sec which seems sort of impossible. FWIW - Chrome and Safari are generally close in their results w/ Safari routinely returning a slightly higher number. And Speedometer shouldn't be impacted by your bandwidth anyway. It's supposed to be testing the performance of the computer and the browser.

I just tested Fast.com 330, Whistle out 211, Speed one 156 using Shaw communications but 720 using Telus communications. Weird!! Google is mostly the same on all around 750.

usagora

macrumors 601

Have you tried downloading a larger file on both browsers (the same file from the same site) to see if you actually notice Safari is slower?

Sorry I did not do that but I will definitely test it and let you know I forgot to mention my second laptop is HP running windows 11 and both Google and Safari run at the same speed of 750. Maybe I’ll call my network provider and see if they have any answers. Just called my Shaw service provider, talk to tech support and no answer. On their end the speed is over 800mbps

Check if you have iCloud Private Relay enabled or not.

I'd recommend trying the free utility called "Speedtest" to check your internet speeds.

Update: No I don’t have Private relay enable on iCloud, however I’ve tested the network speed thru terminal (networkquality -s) it was normal at 711mbps, I also tested a large file download and it was the same speed between Safari and Google, so, than I disabled most of the Safari preferences and again tested few sites. Google Mlabs, speedtest.net by Ookla etc and all sites now report speed around 750, the weird stuff like Fast.com, Shaw speed test, speedone still report only 170 to 320mbps, so it is obvious it is not my Mac, my network provider or my settings, it’s just Safari on my Mac just doesn’t like some of the websites. At any rate, for all practical purposes the Safari runs the same as Google except for some weird? Sites. Good enough for me. It’s just beyond my knowledge to figure it out, but thank you for all your help!!

  • Jan 26, 2023

Make sense to me, and talking to my network provider tech support they should have mentioned it. Just for curiosity, can one of you guys test your Safari speed on this website, “ Shaw speed test “ and let me know what you getting comparing to like Google MLab. PS:I bought this Mac only couple of months ago, for decades only used Windows PC, and I just love my Mac. The difference for me is the screen display and Safari look. I just find it so much easier on my old eyes.

Macrumors 68000.

Few possibilities: Is private relay turned on? Safari going through Apple's VPN will be a bottleneck Google Chrome is famous for not respecting DNS settings its possible Google DNS is pointing you to a more efficient server with better peering agreements. https://chromeisbad.com/ I would download Brave and see if the results still conflict.

  • Jan 28, 2023

Update: So after couple of days of trying different things I came across several posts where people have problems with their USB-C hubs, (I only had the Amazon basic unpowered USB – C 3.1 with ethernet ) so I was going to give it a try, went to BestBuy and bought the Anker 8 in 1 USB -C powered hub. I also had to buy Apple 67W power adapter for the 30W adapter that came with my Mac Air 13 M1 2020 just was not charging my laptop enough due to the fact the Anker needs 15W power just to live. And what do you know all the above tests including Shaw speed test Fast.com Mlab, Ookla and Meter.net All!! Past with flying colors around 801 Mbps. Actually Fast.com on Amazon hub reported 350Mbps now reading over 900mbps. So yes, there could be many reason why the internet speed is fluctuating and all over the place and the hub was just one of the reasons.

TURN OFF iCloud Private Relay!! Setting up my new M2 Max Studio, I was going round in circles changing DNS, ethernet you name it. Was getting 600mbs download on my iphone and around 200mb on the new mac in Safari. With a wired connection turning off iCloud Private Relay increased the speed to 1.3GPS in Safari. YIKES...

Milan254 said: Update: No I don’t have Private relay enable on iCloud, however I’ve tested the network speed thru terminal (networkquality -s) it was normal at 711mbps, I also tested a large file download and it was the same speed between Safari and Google, so, than I disabled most of the Safari preferences and again tested few sites. Click to expand...

For me it was the Private Relay. When "off", testing fast.com on Safari went up to 500Mbps. Thanks for all the people that helped in this thread.

Just tried the fast.com link that was posted earlier and got 670Mbps with Safari 15 on Monterey. I was streaming music on Sirius/XM during the test, FWIW. I don't have iCloud Private Relay (this requires a subscription, doesn't it?) I have Verizon FIOS 500, however a couple months ago they sent me an e-mail saying that I was now on FIOS 600 although there have been no changes to anything and the price is the same. They said that testing revealed their former 500mbs plan was actually fast enough to call 600, so they changed the name! 🤣

We believe that it's a conflict of interest when Internet service providers operate their own speed tests. A third party opinion is necessary and the provider shouldn't be allowed anywhere near the process. When providers host their own speed tests they eliminate the variables that you're here to test. Namely the Internet route itself. This test is unbiased, it tests and grades all providers on the same criteria. They want you to think your connection is running perfectly... but is it really?
