Interviu cu Ioana Ciocan, General Manager Art Safari

Ioana Ciocan: Așa este, vom putea vizita fără restricții Art Safari în 2022, iar acest lucru ne bucură cu atât mai mult cu cât le-am pregătit vizitatorilor noștri 6 luni de artă. Iar în toamnă aniversăm o ediție specială, ediția cu numărul 10.

Cum am ajuns de la un muzeu pop-up de 10 zile la un eveniment de jumătate de an? Ne doream de foarte mult timp să lansăm acest format amplu, mai ales că efortul pe care îl facem pentru a organiza un astfel de eveniment este foarte mare, iar această manifestare unică în țară merită să rămână mai mult timp pe poziții, merită șansa de a fi admirată de un public cât mai numeros. Dar nu am fi reușit acest lucru fără parteneriatul cu Muzeul Municipiului București.

După fiecare ediție strângeam tot și începeam deja să „vânăm” un alt spațiu prin oraș pentru următoarea ediție. Până anul acesta, când lucrurile s-au aliniat în favoarea artei și, pentru prima dată în istoria evenimentului, Art Safari poposește doi ani la rând în același spațiu – superbul Palat Dacia-România, viitorul sediu al Pinacotecii București, pe Lipscani, în baza unui parteneriat semnat între Art Safari și Muzeul Municipiului București. În plus, anul acesta Art Safari este finanțat și de Ministerul Culturii, o recunoaștere extraordinară a leadership-ului în zona proiectelor culturale și a potențialului de a plasa România pe harta cultural-artistică europeană.

Este, așadar, un cadru perfect pentru a scrie un capitol important din povestea Art Safari la care au luat parte 231.000 de vizitatori până acum. Și mai mulți sperăm să se îndrăgostească de artă de acum încolo, iar anul acesta ne așteptăm să avem și foarte mulți vizitatori din țară la ambele ediții. Da, putem spune că Art Safari este ocazia perfectă pentru un city-break în București, așa că spor la planificat mini-vacanța!

De la o ediție pe an, Art Safari ajunge să prezinte 2 sezoane expoziționale anuale. De la 10 zile de artă pe an, la 3 luni de artă per ediție. Un maraton de artă pentru public, dar și pentru întreaga echipă Art Safari, care va avea la dispoziție (doar) o lună și jumătate de la finalizarea primei ediții, pentru amenajarea sezonului expozițional din toamnă.

Sălile special utilate după normele muzeale internaționale vor găzdui în sezonul de primăvară-vară, între 12 mai și 7 august, de joi până duminică, 5 expoziții. „Line-up-ul” este spectaculos: nume mari ale artei românești și internaționale.

Una dintre cele mai așteptate expoziții este „Picasso, Dali & Falla – Pălăria cu trei colțuri”, care va expune arta grafica a celor mai importanți artiști spanioli ai secolului trecut: Pablo Picasso și Salvador Dali. Deși vorbim despre unii dintre cei mai cunoscuți artiști ai tuturor timpurilor, nu multă lume știe că cei doi au creat și artă grafică impresionantă și, mai ales, că au avut și o temă comună.

Expoziția va fi dedicată baletului „Pălăria cu trei colțuri” de Manuel de Falla, pentru care Picasso și Dali au fost comisionați să creeze decorurile și costumele, iar Picasso a realizat chiar și machiajul dansatorilor. Premiera spectacolului a avut loc în 1919 în Londra, în 1920 în Paris și ulterior în Madrid, decorul pentru acestea fiind pictat de Picasso. Treizeci de ani mai târziu, Dali a semnat scenografia aceluiași spectacol în Statele Unite, cu un succes răsunător. Un secol mai târziu, în 2022, spectacolul se mută în centrul istoric al Bucureștiului, într-o viziune nouă, aparținând curatorului expoziției de la Art Safari, Óscar Carrascosa.

Pavilionul Muzeal îi este dedicat lui Theodor Aman, marele maestru al picturii românești, întemeietor al Școlii de Belle-Arte de la noi. Aman a reușit să arate într-un mod extrem de amănunțit stilul de viață al elitei sociale și culturale românești prin scenele de gen cu instantanee din lumea contemporană. Expoziția curatoriată de Elena Olariu dorește să readucă în atenția publicului tânăr grandioasa personalitate a celui care a contribuit decisiv la modernizarea și occidentalizarea artei românești, dar și a societății autohtone în ansamblul ei.

Peste 100 de lucrări (pictură și artă grafică) împrumutate de la muzee din întreaga țară vă așteaptă! Expoziția Aman, precum și întreaga activitate a Pavilionului Muzeal sunt realizate în parteneriat cu Muzeul Municipiului București.

În Pavilionul Aniversar vom avea șansa de a admira o expoziție de fotografie semnată de Barbara Klemm, care marchează 30 de ani de parteneriat germano-român în Europa. Expoziția este organizată în colaborare cu Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen, ICR, Ambasada Republicii Federale Germania la București și Institutul Goethe. Deutsche Bank proudly supports Art Safari ed. 9. Este o expoziție de neratat, mai ales în acest context, care prezintă fotografii realizate de distinsa fotografă în Germania de Vest și de Est înainte de unificare, dar și fotografii realizate în aceeași perioadă în România.

Barbara Klemm combină fotografia documentară cu cea de artă într-un mod rar întalnit în fotografia de presă germană. Deși majoritatea acestor fotografii au fost comandate pentru ziarul Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung , ele reprezintă mai mult decât o acoperire a evenimentelor zilei. Surprind momente unice și adesea tensionate, precum viața de zi cu zi, demonstrații, proteste și imigranți, evenimente culturale și spații urbane, în viziunea curatorială a lui Matthias Flügge.

În Pavilionul Contemporan , al cărui curator este Alexandru Rădvan, ne bucurăm de arta tânără, de lucrările artistei Irina Dragomir. O artistă-fenomen, în plină ascensiune, care s-a remarcat încă de la absolvirea Universității de Artă din București prin arta numită „figurative pop”.

În anii trecuți, lucrările Irinei Dragomir au fost incluse în expoziții de grup și au fost printre preferatele publicului Art Safari, primind mii de share-uri pe rețelele de socializare, astfel că am hotărât să îi dedicăm prima expoziție personală. Expoziția de la Art Safari 2022 se va numi „Roșu, galben și albastru”, iar lucrările sale sunt utilizate pentru a crea identitatea vizuală a evenimentului în acest an.

Nu în ultimul rând, pașii ne poartă către Pavilionul Invitat , care va găzdui o expoziție fabuloasă dedicată lui Marcel Iancu, un artist fenomen al secolului XX: „Marcel Iancu. Reconstruind artele România – Israel”.

Marcel Iancu a fost unul dintre personajele care au orientat și definit arta de avangardă din România și din Israel, aducând-o în aceeași linie cu cea occidentală, în mediul căreia s-a format. Pentru a-i onora și continua moștenirea artistică de mare importanță pentru istoria artelor, în anul 1983, cu un an înainte de moartea sa, a fost inaugurat Muzeul Janco-Dada, la Ein Hod, în Israel. Curatorul expoziției găzduită de Art Safari în 2022 este Raya Zommer-Tal, iar parteneri sunt Janco Dada Museum, Ein Hod, Israel, Ambasada Israelului în România.

– Arta grafică a celor mai importanți artiști spanioli – Picasso și Dalí – este prezentă la această ediție a Art Safari într-o expoziție dedicată baletului „Pălăria cu trei colțuri” de Manuel de Falla. A fost greu, a fost ușor să organizați acest duel al marilor maeștri la București?

Ioana Ciocan: Într-adevăr, în premieră națională, Art Safari oferă anul acesta o incursiune în lumea artistică spaniolă, printr-o expoziție de artă grafică semnată de Pablo Picasso și Salvador Dali. Unii dintre cei mai cunoscuți artiști ai tuturor timpurilor au avut o temă comună: ilustrarea scenografică a baletului „Pălăria cu trei colțuri” și noi abia așteptăm să vedem „duelul” dintre cei doi. Cine a câștigat? Cel mai probabil arta!

În ceea ce privește organizarea, împrumutul expozițiilor internaționale durează 3-4 ani și este extrem de anevoios. Procesul complicat este unul necesar, pentru că siguranța operelor este cea care trebuie să primeze. Detalii cruciale care țin de transport, condiții specifice de expunere, dar și de asigurări și, bineînțeles, panotare trebuie discutate în cele mai mici amănunte. Ne-am bucurat de parteneriatul Ambasadei Spaniei și a Institulului Cervantes pentru realizarea acestei expoziții.

– Cum a evoluat componenta de marketing și comunicare, pentru că în mod evident ați fost nevoiți să schimbați strategia în fiecare an în funcție de oferta expozițională tot mai diversificată și ingenioasă?

Ioana Ciocan: Anul acesta vrem să îi poftim pe vizitatorii noștri mai mult în culise, pentru că pe lângă arta spectaculoasă pe care o expunem, mai este un spectacol nevăzut, toată mașinăria extraordinară din spatele Art Safari: de la modul în care este amenajat spațiul, modul în care sunt transportate lucrările (cu pază specială, fiind vorba de multe ori de tezaur), modul în care sunt depozitate și apoi expuse lucrările de artă. Avem foarte multe lucruri de spus și mai ales de arătat. Content marketing la cel mai înalt nivel, așa că toate aceste detalii fabuloase vor face deliciul publicului. Desigur, anul acesta ne adresăm într-o mai mare măsură și publicului din țară, extindem comunicarea la nivel național, demers în care suntem ajutați și de partenerul nostru media Europa FM. Deși în fiecare an am avut această componentă națională, dar și internațională, în comunicarea noastră, anul acesta focusul este și mai mare în această zonă, atât prin acțiuni de marketing digital, cât și prin acțiuni de comunicare și PR. Un rol foarte important în comunicare îl joacă și parteneriatele noastre strategice cu Metrorex și Compania Aeroporturi, cu ajutorul cărora aducem arta mai aproape de oameni. Muzeul de la metrou, dar și cel din aeroportul Henri Coandă sunt vizitate zilnic, contribuind la creșterea notorietății Art Safari și la educarea publicului, atragerea lui de partea artei. Și bineînțeles, experiența de vizitare pe care o oferim este și ea o parte foarte importantă din campania de marketing Art Safari.

– Turul de noapte s-a configurat așa cum l-ați gândit voi sau au contat mai mult preferințele publicului?

Ioana Ciocan: Night Tours au evoluat ca o combinație între ideile noastre, conceptul pe care l-am creionat inițial, și feedback-ul primit în ultimii ani de la publicul nostru pentru că da, ne place foarte mult să comunicăm cu vizitatorii și încercăm, pe cât posibil, să ținem cont de fiecare sugestie, dorință sau cerință. Până la urmă tururile de noapte oferă mai mult decât acces la expoziție, oferă o experiență foarte plăcută pentru vizitatorii care vor să își petreacă timpul în oraș, în compania selectă a artei, pe ritmuri de muzică live sau la un cocktail party.

– Ați avut și de această dată parteneri de prestigiu. Cum decurge, de pildă, colaborarea cu MMB, care s-a alăturat acestui mare eveniment cultural, aducându-l în atenția vizitatorilor pe Theodor Aman?

Ioana Ciocan: Parteneriatul cu MMB este extrem de valoros pentru noi și mai ales pentru public, pentru că datorită acestui parteneriat, două expoziții istorice au fost produse: în 2021 „Seducție și triumf în artă” și în 2022 „Theodor Aman. Primul artist român modern”, ambele curatoriate de dr. Elena Olariu, director adjunct Artă, Restaurare, Conservare.

Mulțumirile noastre se duc către Adrian Majuru, manager al MMB, datorită căruia peste o sută de mii de oameni vor vizita expozițiile din Palatul Dacia-România. Putem ține porțile deschise ale evenimentului Art Safari mai mult timp pentru cei care iubesc arta, grație acestui parteneriat. Tot în baza parteneriatului cu Muzeul Municipiului București vizitatorii îl vor descoperi în toată splendoarea, anul acesta, la Art Safari, pe Theodor Aman, primul artist român modern. Această colaborare mă bucură foarte mult și chiar încurajez parteneriatele cu cât mai multe muzee, pentru că arta ar trebui să circule, să bucure cât mai mulți oameni.

De 9 ani, Art Safari aduce arta românească de prestigiu, dar și arta internațională, mai aproape de iubitorii de frumos din România. Acest lucru este posibil datorită parteneriatelor dintre Art Safari și autoritățile și entitățile locale, dar și parteneriatelor noastre cu autorități și instituții de pe toate continentele, mai ales prin ambasadele prezente în România, dar și parteneriatelor cu instituții de artă și cultură de renume global.

– Care sunt surprizele pregătite pentru copii?

Ioana Ciocan: Art Safari Kids este o componentă importantă a Pavilionului de Artă București, din dorința noastră de a-i apropia pe copii de artă. În fiecare an îi plimbăm pe copii prin expoziție, pe un traseu adaptat vârstei lor. Le explicăm într-un limbaj adaptat operele, la arătăm artă adevărată, îi convingem astfel că arta este distractivă. Atelierele de creație, care le stimulează imaginația și creativitatea, și tururile ghidate cu artă pe înțelesul lor vor fi și anul acesta o alternativă extraordinară la tabletă. Anul acesta Art Safari Kids va avea un spațiu dedicat la etajul doi, special creat pentru ei de arhitectul Ioana Corbu.

– Ce mai urmează în acest an, primul în care nu este doar o singură ediție a Art Safari?

Ioana Ciocan: În ediția de toamnă vom avea o expoziție de răsunet și foarte valoroasă organizată în colaborare cu Victoria and Albert Museum din Londra. Vizitatorii vor avea șansa să vadă peste 90 de creații ale lui John Constable, marele pictor englez care a revoluționat arta peisagistică și ale altor maești ai artei internaționale precum Turner sau Durer, și o expoziție a unuia dintre maeștrii artei românești, Ștefan Popescu, curatoriată de Elena Olariu. Celelalte surprize vor fi dezvăluite pe parcurs, așa că rămâneți cu ochii pe noi.

Art Safari Love Edition – Summer season

The Art Safari Love Edition summer season will take place from June 30 to September 10 at the Dacia-Romania Palace on Lipscani Street. It will present four classical and contemporary Romanian art exhibitions, plus prestigious international art. The „Love Stories” exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery, London, one of the most important international museums with the most extensive collection of portraits worldwide, will be seen for the national premiere. „Love Stories” presents portraits of famous couples, including Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, John Lennon and Yoko Ono or Salvador Dalí and Gala Dalí.

The Art Safari summer season will be about love! It is certain that the installations and the numerous stories from the Love Stories exhibition, with adventures, couples captured throughout history and secrets, will conquer the public. And Romanian Supercontemporary art is well represented in the Dacia-Romania Palace: we have the duel of nymphs and zombies in the vision of two young artists: Ondine and Baraka. Love Stories – curator: Lucy Peltz, an exhibition made in partnership with the National Portrait Gallery, London

Love floats in the Dacia-Romania Palace, in season 12. Portraits of famous couples such as Victoria and David Beckham, John Lennon and Yoko Ono, etc., from the National Portrait Gallery Collection, London, will be seen in the heart of Bucharest . The famous London Museum has the most extensive collection of portraits of some famous personalities.

From the 16th century until now, the portrait has been closely linked to love and desire and social recognition of relationships. Portraits are visual records of love, kinship, and memories of deceased or absent loved ones, and have always been offered as a sign of love. Love and relationships thus represent a theme with tradition in the history of portraiture, which will also be explored in Love Stories, through a selection of key works from the collection of the National Portrait Gallery, London. Constantin Artachino (1870 – 1954), curator: Elena Olariu, an exhibition in partnership with the Bucharest City Museum

A prominent personality of Romanian history, Artachino is considered a master of Romanian Orientalism, of the Dobrogean brand. He stood out in the interwar period through silk brushwork, which characterized him, and works painted in clear, elegant lines under the sign of balance and harmony. Due to his family’s origin (the port of Artachi, on the Sea of Marmara, the Ottoman Empire), he travelled to the Balkan world and was one of its most skilled portrayers.

He studied at the Belle-Arte School, where he was a student of Theodor Aman. He continued his studies in Paris at the Julian Academy, where he was a colleague of Nicolae Vermont and Ştefan Luchian, with whom he befriended and formed artistic groups. Artachino worked in the village of Barbizon and the forest of Fontainebleau, following the example of Nicolae Grigorescu, whom he admired. Still he also travelled to London, Milan, Venice and Istanbul. He also painted a lot in Bulgaria, Sofia, Silistra and Balchik, Dobrogea or on the banks of the Danube.

Large abstract canvases, signed by one of the most significant painters of Romanian abstraction and postmodernism of the ideologizing period of the Cold War, Ion Alin Gheorghiu, will be exhibited in the Dacia-Romania Palace. Gheorghiu was born into a modest family of workers and had a turbulent life story. He entered the class of Professor Camil Ressu at the Nicolae Grigorescu Institute of Arts with an „exceptional” grade. Still, he finished the faculty without a diploma because the work „Creangă and Eminescu in Iași” was considered nationalist and formalist during socialist realism.

He was not accepted in the official exhibitions, being forced to unload potatoes in the yard at night, to work as a porter, all this time not having a workshop and painting with what he could until 1958, when he started to be invited to almost all essential exhibitions in the country. Very demanding with his art, he organized very few personal exhibitions. Andrei Pleșu signs the curatorial text of the exhibition.

There will also be an artistic battle at the Palace between two artists with opposed visions: Ondine Slimvoschi (b. 1982) vs. Paul Marat Baraka (b. 1994) in the exhibition „Nymphs and Zombies: Ondine’s Hope and Baraka’s Despair”. Ondine is an artist of serene mythology, of the bestiary of beautiful fairy tales, illustrating the artist’s active interest in the melancholia of 19th-century aesthetics. At the same time, Baraka focuses on Shaw’s subjects provocatively in a hyperrealistic style, both in painting and in sculptures. Baraka’s approach is also critical, highlighting the banality of evil through sarcasm and irony.

In addition to the four exhibitions, Art Safari will also exhibit a series of installations that complete the visiting experience. And the children have their own Art Safari in the Palace, which includes creative workshops and guided tours of the exhibitions.

Founded in 1856, the National Portrait Gallery tells the story of Britain through portraits, using art to bring history to life and explore the present. From global figures to unsung heroes, the NPG collection is full of stories that have shaped and continue to shape a nation.

The gallery in St. Martin’s Place, London, is closed until June 22. All this time, essential construction works are taking place for the „Inspiring People” project, which will transform the Gallery, including a complete redevelopment of the building and the opening a new learning center. While the museum was closed, the National Portrait Gallery continued to exhibit the collection digitally and through a series of partnerships and collaborations across the country.

The event takes place between June 30 and September 10, 2023, and at this edition the public is invited to meet the master of portrait and landscape, Constantin Artachino (1870 – 1954). Visiting hours are between 10:00 and 20:00, daily.

The annual organizer of the Bucharest Art Pavilion – the largest conglomerate of art exhibitions in Romania – now in its 12 th edition, carries out, in partnership with Romanian and international art museums and private collectors, extensive retrospective exhibitions that propose recovery of heritage values.

20 lei, the Art Safari access fee for members of the UB community

For the 2023 edition, members of the UB community – students, teaching staff and administrative staff – benefit from a special rate for access to the Art Safari pavilions.

Thus, tickets for students, teaching staff and staff of the University of Bucharest will be available for the price of only 20 lei. The full access fee for all four Art Safari pavilions is 90 lei for adults, and tickets for the 2023 edition are available here .

We make it clear that the reduced tickets for the UB community can be purchased exclusively offline, from the Art Safari ticket office located in the Dacia-România Palace (Lipscani Street, no. 18-20, Bucharest), based on the presentation of the student/employee card.

Our website implements the ARIA attributes (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) technique, alongside various different behavioral changes, to ensure blind users visiting with screen-readers are able to read, comprehend, and enjoy the website’s functions. As soon as a user with a screen-reader enters your site, they immediately receive a prompt to enter the Screen-Reader Profile so they can browse and operate your site effectively. Screen-reader optimization: we run a background process that learns the website’s components from top to bottom, to ensure ongoing compliance even when updating the website. Flooding Inundates Kenya, Killing at Least 32 and Displacing Thousands

Days of torrential rains have pummeled parts of Kenya, leaving at least 32 dead, 15 injured and more than 40,000 people displaced, according to officials. The flooding has killed nearly 1,000 farm animals and destroyed thousands of acres of crops, with more rain expected across the country in the coming days.

The rains began in March during what is known in the country as the “long rains,” but intensified over the past week, according to the Kenya Meteorological Department .

Heavy rains have also pounded other nations across East Africa. In Tanzania, at least 155 people were killed and 236 others injured from the relentless rain that has swept several parts of the country in recent days, Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa said on Thursday.

The rains affected some 200,000 people, Mr. Majaliwa added, and caused damage to farms, bridges, roads, schools and places of worship. The Tanzania Meteorological Authority warned that heavy rains and strong winds would continue to pummel several towns and cities, including the port city of Dar es Salaam.

In Kenya’s capital, Nairobi, where some of the country’s heaviest rain has fallen, more than 30,000 people have been displaced, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs . On Tuesday, 18 people there were stranded and later rescued, including seven children, the Kenya Red Cross Society said.

Edwin Sifuna, the Nairobi County senator, said on social media that the local government there was “clearly overwhelmed,” and he called on the federal government for help.

“The situation in Nairobi has escalated to extreme levels,” he wrote in a post that included a video of people stranded on rooftops surrounded by floodwaters.

Kithure Kindiki, cabinet secretary for the Interior Ministry, said in a social media post on Thursday that several government agencies were beginning a joint operation to assist the victims, conduct rescues and evacuate those who remain at risk.

The heavy rains on Wednesday forced Kenya Railways to suspend commuter train services. The Kenya Urban Roads Authority also partially closed four major roads in Nairobi and warned of heavy flooding along several major highways in the capital and in the coastal city of Mombasa.

The rains were not expected to subside over the next few days, according to the Kenya Meteorological Department, which had rain in the forecast for parts of the country, including Nairobi, through Monday. The agency also warned of a high likelihood of breakouts of diseases such as malaria and diarrhea in some areas.

The latest downpours come just months after torrential rains and floods killed dozens of people and displaced thousands more nationwide.

Art Safari: Constantin Brâncuși’s The Kiss on display in downtown Bucharest

The famous sculpture  The Kiss  (1907) by Constantin Brâncusi (1876-1957) arrived in Bucharest for the first time in almost 50 years, being exhibited at the Art Safari Love Edition for ten days, until August 30. The masterpiece was previously included in a Bucharest exhibition in 1976.

The Kiss has an insured value of EUR 22 million and was transported from the Craiova Art Museum to Bucharest under maximum security conditions with a company specialized in fine art transport, escorted by the Romanian Gendarmerie. The masterpiece is guarded around the clock at the Art Safari event in downtown Bucharest.

"Brâncusi's The Kiss, the first of the famous cycle dedicated to love, finds its perfect place among the masterpieces at the National Portrait Gallery. We thank the Craiova Art Museum for its openness to lend us for ten days a masterpiece that completes the Love Stories exhibition. It is an important premiere for Art Safari, but also for the capital city," said Ioana Ciocan, CEO of Art Safari and Commissioner of Romania at the Venice Biennale.

The Kiss  was made in 1907 and is the first sculpture in the much-loved series of Kisses, on which Brâncuși worked for 40 years. It is one of the artist's most famous masterpieces, along with  The Sleeping Muse  (1908),  Prometheus  (1911),  Mademoiselle Pogany  (1913),  The   Newborn  (1915),  Bird in Space  (1919) and  The Endless Column  (1938).

The Kiss  is considered the first modern sculpture of the 20th century. It has been exhibited in the great museums and art galleries of the world, including the Guggenheim Museum - New York, the Cartier Foundation - Paris, the Pompidou Center - Paris, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the BOZAR Arts Center in Brussels.

A version of  The Kiss  from 1910 serves as a tombstone in Montparnasse Cemetery in Paris, France, while another version can be seen at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

In Bucharest, the masterpiece is exhibited as part of the "Love Stories" show created in collaboration with the National Portrait Gallery, London, part of the Romanian art insertion dedicated to love. Art Safari also exhibits the love letters between Constantin Brâncuși and his muse Florence Meyer. On one of them, Brâncuși even drew a sketch of  The Kiss .

Art Safari has a special visiting schedule during this period, awaiting visitors daily from 12:00 to 21:00 until August 30. Night Tours are also available Friday and Saturday from 22:00 and 1:00.
