Tour de france stage 1: the hilliest-ever opening stage of the tour, a dramatic opener to this year's tour with an elevation gain of 3,800 meters. will the bunch fragment like last year.

Stage 1 — Saturday, June 29 Florence-Rimini Distance: 206km (128 miles) Profile: Medium mountain stage

Stage 1: A daunting opener

Last year’s first stage was said by some to be amongst the hardest Tour openers ever; one year later, the organizers have decided to follow the same template.

Indeed they have ramped up the difficulty, with an elevation gain of 3,800 meters, some 500 meters more than last time around. The stage will not so much shake off the cobwebs as evaporate them. Starting in Florence as part of the first-ever Italian Grand Depart in history, the riders will have 30 mainly flat kilometers before the first of seven categorized climbs rear up.

The Col de Valico Tre Faggi is the highest on the stage, peaking at 930 meters altitude after 12.5km of climbing. A breakaway is almost certain to form here and, passing over the subsequent climbs of the Côte des Forche, the Côte de Carnaio and the Colle de Barbotto, should be able to further pad their advantage.

The pendulum may well swing the other way over the three climbs located in the final 50 kms. The last of these, the Côte de Saint-Marino, is followed by 25 downhill and flat roads to the finish in Rimini. Much will depend on how the favorites ride the stage but if the big names and their teams go all in, a very difficult first day is in store.

The stage finish is a poignant location for Italian cycling. The 1998 Tour de France winner Marco Pantani died in Rimini in 2004, with this year’s Tour taking place 20 years after that tragic event.

The view of Tour de France race director Christian Prudhomme: “It’s rare for the Tour de France to start with more than 3,600 meters of climbing — in fact it’s never happened before! — and it’s also the first time that the race has visited the home city of Gino Bartali.

“The succession of hills in Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna are likely to be the setting for an immediate and testing confrontation between the contenders for the title, particularly the climb into San Marino (7.1km at 4.8 percent), where the race will add a 13th name to its catalogue of foreign visits.”

9 Things to See in Moscow's Red Square

 Sir Francis Canker/Getty Images

In most cases, you'll be entering Red Square from the north, passing landmarks such as the Bolshoi Theatre and Duma parliament building as you make your way southward. Although you don't necessarily have to pass through the Voskresensky (or Resurrection in English) Gates in order to gain access to the square these days, they definitely provide a sense of arrival, to say nothing of the way their left arch frame's St. Basil's Cathedral if you look from just the right angle.

An interesting fact is that while a gate of some kind has stood here since the mid-16th century, the one you currently see wasn't built until 1994, having been destroyed in 1931 so that tanks could enter and exit Red Square during military parades.

St. Basil's Cathedral

TripSavvy / Christopher Larson

Few sights are as iconic not only of Moscow and Red Square but indeed of Russia than St. Basil's Cathedral, whose colorful, onion-shaped domes are a symbol of the country around the world. Officially known as the Cathedral of Vasily the Blessed, this church has stood since 1561, which is quite miraculous when you consider all the turbulent history that has transpired since then.

Among other things, religion was severely prohibited during the Soviet period , which led some to believe that this emblem of the Russian Orthodox church might not withstand the tenure of the USSR.

An interesting fact is that St. Basil's is the so-called "Kilometer Zero" of Russia; all of Moscow's main roads (which can take you anywhere in Russia) begin at the exits to Red Square. In this way, St. Basil's iconic status also has an extremely tangible element.

The Kremlin

TripSavvy / Christopher Larson

When you think of The Kremlin, it's unlikely that positive images enter your mind. The fact that simply saying the word "Kremlin" is too vague a descriptor (most Russian cities have their own Kremlin complexes; you should say "Moscow Kremlin") notwithstanding, this misunderstood place is incredibly beautiful, even if you don't like the policy that comes out of it.

Senate Square

In spite of its name, which refers to the role the building that rises above the square played during Imperial Russia, Senate Square is actually home to Russia's presidential administration, currently helmed by Vladimir Putin. In order to see where Russia's legislature operates from, walk just outside Red Square to the Duma parliament building.

Dormition Cathedral

Dating back to the year 1479, the gold-domed Dormition Cathedral pays homage to an Orthodox religious feast that commemorates the death of the Virgin Mary . As is the case with St. Basil's, it is curious that such a conspicuously religious structure was able to survive through the Soviet period.

Armoury Chamber

Though it takes its name from the fact that it housed Russia's royal arsenal when it was built in the 16th century, the most notable resident of the Kremlin's Armoury Chamber today is the Russian Diamond Fund.

Notable Kremlin Towers

Robert Schrader

The interior of the Moscow Kremlin is more beautiful and inviting than you'd expect, but the walls and towers that rise around it better live up to the intimidation with which the complex is associated.

Borovitskaya Tower

Named to commemorate the dense forest that once stood atop the mount where it's built, this tower is extremely picturesque. Built in the late 15th century, it's visible from most places in the square, and also as you walk along the Moskva River.

Nikolskaya Tower

Also built in the year 1491, this tower currently suffered destruction at the hands of Napoleon's army in the 19th century. What you see now is the result of an 1816 re-design and renovation, though artillery fire during the Russian Revolution also caused superficial damage to the tower, named to honor St. Nikolas of Mozhaysk , so it's difficult to know which elements of it are original.

Spasskaya Tower

Known in English as the "Savior's Tower," this iconic, star-topped tower is perhaps the best-known of all the Kremlin's towers. Built in 1491 like the other two towers on this list, it's certainly the most photographed. As a result of its proximity to St. Basil's, it often makes its way into tourists' pictures.

Mausoleum of Lenin

Just as it's strange to learn how many religious monuments survived through the Soviet period, it's a bit odd to think that Lenin's preserved body still sits in a mausoleum just beneath the walls of the Kremlin on Red Square, given the lack of consensus about the ultimate impact of his Revolution, even in Russia.

It's not guaranteed that you'll be able to see the body (which, believe it or not, seems to be improving with age ) when you go, and if you do you will likely have to wait in line, but even strolling past the outside of the Lenin Mausoleum, flanked by stone-faced guards that almost look like statues, illuminates the gravity of his body still being here.

GUM Shopping Center

You might cringe, at least initially, when you realize that one of the most iconic stops on a tour of Red Square is a department store—until you see said department store, that is. Built in 1893 and known during Soviet times as the State Department Store, GUM  ( Glávnyj Universáľnyj Magazín or Main Universal Store in English) hearkens back to the grandeur of the late 19th century, both seen from the outside (especially, when lit up at night) and the interior, which might have you feeling like you're further west in Europe.

A trip inside GUM is a particularly good idea during winter, when frigid temperatures outside will have you savoring the heat, the quality of souvenirs, confections and other goods sold inside notwithstanding. Also, make sure not to confuse GUM with CDM, which sits near the Bolshoi Theatre, even though both are stunning and iconic in their own right.

State Historical Museum

The Russian State Historical Museum is located near Voskresensky Gates, though you should wait until after you've seen the first few attractions of Red Square and the Kremlin to head back there and go inside. To be sure, as you pass by its facade (whose late-19th century grandeur somewhat obscures that fact that it's currently a museum accessible to the public) you might not even think to try and gain entry.

Once inside the museum, you can plan to spend at least a couple of hours, given that artifacts here date back to the very beginning of the Russian state in the ninth century. As is the case with GUM, this will be a particularly alluring prospect if you visit in winter, when Moscow is arguably at its most beautiful, but certainly at its least tolerable.

Minin-Pozharsky Monument

It's somewhat easy to disregard this monument, which pays homage to the two Russian princes who ended the so-called "Time of Troubles" in the mid-16th century, during which Polish-Lithuanian forces occupied Russia, among other awful things including a famine. That's because the statue currently sits just at the base of St. Basil's Cathedral, which makes it very difficult to photograph or even see without being overwhelmed by that much more famous edifice.

Though the statue originally sat at the very center of Red Square, it came to be an obstacle to the movement of tanks during the Soviet period, much like the Voskresensky Gates. As a result, authorities moved it during that time, and it's stayed where you currently find it ever since.

Kazan Cathedral

Taken by itself, the smokey-pink Kazan Cathedral is an architectural marvel; originally built in the 17th century, the church you find here today, located just north of the GUM department store, dates back only to 1993.

Unfortunately, since it sits not only in the shadow of GUM, but also in the shadow St. Basil's and the Towers of the Kremlin, it's easy to miss entirely if you aren't looking. As a result, you might wait until you've seen just about everything else in Red Square before coming here to take photos, and to appreciate the understated beauty of this oft-overlooked cathedral.

Moskva River

As you head south from St. Basil's Cathedral to exit Red Square, make sure to walk onto Bolshoy Moskvoretskiy Bridge, which crosses the Moskva River. If you look due north, you can get an excellent shot of the church framed, on the left, by the towers of the Kremlin. Directing your gaze a bit to the west allows you to see the skyscrapers of Moscow City as they rise above the Kremlin's walls.

Walking westward along the riverbank is also a worthwhile excursion, for the views it provides of Red Square and the Kremlin, as well as the fact that doing so takes you to other iconic Moscow attractions, including Gorky Park and the Pushkin Museum. The views you enjoy from the river and the bridge are particularly stunning at night, though you should make sure you bring a tripod if you want to get a clear picture, given how strong winds over and near the river can be.

Tour des Trees

tour de res

The 2024 Tour des Trees will take place from Sunday, September 22 thru Saturday, September 28 starting in Stamford, CT, towards and around Martha’s Vineyard, and ending in Providence, RI.

What is the Tour des Trees?

The Tour des Trees is an annual long-distance cycling adventure which serves as the primary public outreach and community engagement event for  Tree Research and Education Endowment Fund (TREE Fund) . Since 1992, Tour des Trees riders have cycled through communities in the U.S., Canada and the U.K., planting trees, educating children and the public, and shining a light on the work done by arboriculture professionals and the importance of science-based tree care.

The Tour des Trees serves to advance TREE Fund’s mission to explore and share the science of trees contributing to the lives of people, communities, economies, and the environment, and of the planning, planting, and sustainability of urban and community trees.  TREE Fund research  has produced better ways to plant and care for urban trees, making them more resilient, more resistant to pests, and less prone to failure. The Tour also supports  education programs  aimed at connecting young people with the environment and career opportunities in green industries. TREE Fund has been able to award more than $5.4 million in grant and scholarship funding since 2002, and the Tour des Trees has been a key component in the organization’s ongoing success.

Event expenses are defrayed by TREE Fund’s generous  partners , so funds raised by riders can be applied to new grants, payments on multi-year grants awarded in prior years, or added to permanent endowment funds that will sustain research into the future.

The 2024 Tour des Trees features both a live ride and a Virtual Tour des Trees at home event, so supporters can ride with us in person or support TREE Fund on their own time, in their own way.

See links below for registration and the Tour des Trees tab at the top of the page for key information for riders, volunteers, donors, and anyone considering participating in or supporting the event. We hope to see you on the Tour this year!

The 2024 ride will be roughly 425 miles and the schedule is as follows (subject to change):

  • Riding Day 1: Stamford, CT to Middletown, CT- 82 miles
  • Riding Day 2: Middletown, CT to Smithfield, RI- 82 miles

Tour de France: Lampaert stuns favourites to take yellow jersey

Van Aert second and Pogacar third in opening time trial

Yves Lampaert (QuickStep-AlphaVinyl) has taken a shock win in the rain-soaked short opening time trial stage of the 2022 Tour de France , finishing five seconds ahead of leading favourite Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) to claim the race's first maillot jaune on the streets of Copenhagen.

In what was effectively the first snapshot of the battle for the overall, Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) confirmed his status as overall favourite with third place, completing the 13.2-kilometre course just seven seconds down on Lampaert, and best of the GC racers.

Leading contender Filippo Ganna (Ineos Grenadiers) was only able to make fourth after he, like so many of the TT and GC heavyweights, opted for an early start to try to avoid what proved to be a completely inaccurate forecast of heavy rain coming in late in the day, and then suffered a suspected late puncture.

Although two more lead favourites, Jonas Vingegaard and teammate Primož Roglič (Jumbo-Visma) opted to take things cautiously on the wet, ultra-slippery corners, they still proved to be Pogačar's closest rivals on the day, finishing 14 and 15 seconds, respectively, down on Lampaert.

But conditions then party dried out on a short, technical city centre course in Denmark and the wind dropped, providing a golden opportunity for the late starters to make the most of a marginally less risky course, which Lampaert, a former double national TT champion, undoubtedly did to perfection.

"My mind is exploding,  a top 10 would have been great, now I beat all the best in the world, I never expected it," Lampaert, 31, said.

"I can't believe it, I know i'm in good condition, but this is something I could never dream of, and I did it. Everybody is free to pedal as hard as they can in the time trial, but to beat Van Aert, Van der Poel, Ganna -  it's unbelievable for me."

How it unfolded

The combination of rain, slippery city-centre road surfaces and technical sections provided something of a stressful start to the 2022 Tour, despite the huge moral support provided by the massive, cheering crowds lining the 13.2-kilometre route. And the sight of early-favourite Stefan Bissegger (EF Education-EasyPost) skidding and crashing twice in nearly consecutive corners was a dire warning to the risks of overcooking the course.

On a day where the ongoing investigations into the Bahrain Victorious team rumbled on uncomfortably in the background, Bauke Mollema proved his recent reigning Dutch national TT champion title was no fluke with a powerful best early time of 15:34.

The Trek-Segafredo racer's spell in the hot seat was quickly cut short, though, when Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck) stormed round the gently-descending final right-hand corner in Tivoli Gardens to finish four seconds faster than his compatriot.

As a flurry of favourites crossed the line and as the rain teemed down, Filippo Ganna (Ineos Grenadiers) was later loath to blame the poor weather conditions or even the late puncture caused by a glass shard for a time trial that initially placed him just atop the stage classification by a scant two seconds.

The reigning time trial World Champion said he didn't feel at ease on the corners, though, and although he had upped his pace notably in the second half of the course, when Van Aert streaked across the line a full six seconds ahead, and Ganna's hold on yellow slipped away almost before he knew he had it.

According to his UAE Team Emirates Sports Director Joxean Fernández Matxin, Pogačar had not opted to take any risks. If so, his rivals will have been considerably downhearted by the way the Slovenian Tour star managed to outpower the entire GC field by a minimum of eight seconds on his closest pursuer in that category, Jonas Vingegaard.

Yet if Van Aert's remarkable ride, outshining both the pre-stage favourite and the pre-Tour favourite, looked all but certain to place him in yellow, his fellow Belgian Lampaert turned the tables in spectacular fashion in the final hour.

Clearly at home on the technical sections, including a twisting segment across a narrow, lake bridge where others had been much less comfortable, Lampaert's strengths of time trialling and bike-handling skills combined to give him a victory far beyond his expectations.

"The roads were really wet still, the potholes full of water, so I always had the same conditions [as the favourite]," Lampaert said afterwards. "I always thought in the corners, 'Yves, go faster, trust in your tyres, you lose seconds in the corners'. And in the end I came in with five seconds in front of Van Aert."

While Lampaert, even in his greatest hour as a racer, had thoughts for his good friend and teammate Tim Declercq, who had to pull out of the Tour de France line-up because of COVID-19 positive, he said that was only, "On Monday, when I see my girlfriend and son, I think that’s when I'm going to really realise I have had the yellow jersey for at least one day."

The full evaluation on the opening Danish segment of the Tour will only come after the widely-predicted battle of the crosswinds on the 18-kilometre bridge the peloton face late on Saturday's stage.

But while Pogačar can afford to wait for yellow for now, Lampaert can enjoy the time spent in the limelight with the biggest win of his career.

The Red Square

Red Square, Moscow

The Red Square is Moscow’s most important site. Many foreigners mistakenly think that the Red Square only gained prominence during the Communist regime. In fact, it is the most historic sight in Moscow - dating back to the 11th century. Throughout its 1000-year-old history, the Red Square has been at the epicentre of political, social and religious life in Russia. Much of the original red-brick buildings that were built in the medieval times have survived to the present day. Along with the architecture, the character of this eminent square remains unchanged. Today, the Red Square still hosts some of the country’s most important events like the world-famous New Year’s celebrations and the headline-catching parade on Victory Day.

Whether you plan to travel to Moscow specifically to see the Red Square or if it’s only going to make up a small part of your trip, the Kremlin and Red Square complex won’t disappoint.

Did you know? There are quite a few “Red Squares” in Russia, many of which aren’t even red! The name comes not from the colour, but rather from the word beautiful which is very similar to the Russian word for red.

Why Visit the Red Square?

  • History: Mongols, Tsars, Napoleon and Communists; the Red square has seen them all. The square’s history is fascinating and much of it can still be appreciated in the medieval architecture that stand in the square to this day.
  • Celebrations: The Soviets used the Red Square as their stage to show off to the world. With Putin, the ginormous military parades still continue and the nation’s main holiday, New Year’s Eve, is celebrated on the square by crowds in the hundreds of thousands.
  • Beauty: Fringed by the century-old walls of the Kremlin, with St Basil’s Cathedral at its centre and a view onto the Moscow river; the Red Square is Moscow’s most breathtaking site.

The History of the Red Square

Since the Kremlin was built in the 14th-century, it’s always had an open, square-shaped space on its Eastern side. This area was purposefully kept clear by the order of Ivan the Great so it could be used as shooting range in war. Later, after the Times of Trouble had subsided and Moscow was secure from invading Poles, what had been a battlefield began to turn into a bustling hub of commerce. Soon the square had 700 traders’ stalls and, as early as 1561, St Basil’s Cathedral was erected.

As the Muscovy princedom which ruled from the Kremlin became ever more powerful, new palaces, churches and towers were added on the inside of the Kremlin and on the Red Square. A moat was dug between the Kremlin and the square, part of which was kept free of water so that lions, tigers and even elephants could be kept for the Tsar’s entertainment!

Moscow, Russia

After Peter the Great declared St Petersburg the empire’s capital, the Red Square lost its status as the centre of the Russian state. While the Tsars still visited the Kremlin’s palace, the Red Square only became an eminent part of Russian society 300 years later when the communists moved the seat of power back to Moscow.

The Soviet Union saw the Red Square change for both the better and worse. The same sorry fate of religious symbols in the USSR befell the exquisite,16th-century Kazan Cathedral and the magnificent Resurrection Gates which guarded the entrance to the Red Square. The Soviets, however, didn’t just destruct. They erected monuments in honour of their comrades, the most famous of which is, of course, Lenin’s mausoleum.

Did you know? The walls of the Kremlin used to be painted white to protect the brickwork. They only stopped painting them in the 19th-century.

The Main Sights on the Red Square

The Kremlin

The towers and thick, medieval walls of the Kremlin swallow up most of the view from the Red Square. So imposing is the Kremlin’s presence that it’s easy to miss the other treasures around the Red Square. Behind its red walls lie fascinating cultural treasures like the Russian Diamond Fund and the Annunciation Cathedral. It is also home to Putin’s official residence.

Lenin’s Mausoleum

The eeriest site on the Red Square is easily missed due to its low, dark profile. Built under the shadow of the Kremlin’s walls, Lenin’s mausoleum is minuscule compared to the surrounding architecture. Its pyramidal structure is also far too small to accommodate even a fraction of the crowds who line up for hours outside. If you’re prepared to wait for the chance to slowly walk around Lenin’s waxen body for just two minutes, then make sure to arrive an hour before opening.

Did you know? Stalin was displayed alongside Lenin in the mausoleum till the 60s when Stalinism began to be scrutinised. Today, you can find Stalin along with many other notable comrades, such as Yuri Gagarin, buried behind the mausoleum where the moat and animal pit once lay.

St Basil’s Cathedral

Russia’s most emblematic symbol was built by the order of Ivan IV to celebrate his capture of Astrakhan and Kazan. The church's design that was meant to represent a bonfire has no comparison. No orthodox church, past or present, has ever been built that way.

Lobnoye Mesto

The oval, stone platform near St Basil’s is often overlooked. But, when Tsars still lived in the Kremlin, this was the site which all visitors to the Red Square gathered around. On this historic platform, speeches were given to citizens, heads were lost in executions and war spoils were shown off.

State Historical Museum

Though it looks centuries old, the building on the upper slope of the Red Square is a relatively new addition; having been built in the 19th-century. Unlike all the other buildings, it wasn’t built by a tsar. Instead, passionate Slavic historians grouped up to gather enough funds to create the “greatest museum in Russia”. Its collections are impressive: with 9th-century relics and the Romanov’s personal belongings.

Built in the 1890s to serve as a shopping centre for Moscow’s elite, it only filled its purpose for a few short years before the Bolsheviks took over. During the USSR, it served many roles. In the beginning, boutiques were turned into communal flats, which were later turned into offices which finally were remade into soviet shops. During its history, it housed the body of Stalin’s second wife after she committed suicide as well as a secret, luxury boutique called “section 22” which sold outfits like Chanel suits to those well-connected with the ruling party.

Did you know? The Kremlin is the largest fortress in Europe still in use.

Celebrations on the Red Square

In days gone by, plump patriarch’s riding on donkeys used to the main event on the Red Square’s calendar but now things are a lot more sophisticated. While the line-up of smaller, seasonal events - such as formula 1 races and fashion shows - is constantly updating, the main events such as New Year’s Eve and the Victory Day Parade take place each year without fail.

Victory Parade

May the 9th, the day the Great Patriotic War ended, was the USSR’s most important holiday. Though today New Year’s has regained its place as Russia’s most popular holiday, Victory Day is still celebrated by practically everyone. The most spectacular parades have taken place on the Red Square since 1945 and with each passing year, the parades only get bigger and better! Along with the show of military might, citizens gather in the thousands to form The Immortal Procession; carrying pictures of dead relatives on sticks as a sombre reminder of the toll the war took.

Spasskaya Tower Military Music Festival and Tattoo

Though this celebration might not be well- known to foreigners, it is an international event. Since beginning in 2007, the band of the Russian army has invited twelve other country’s bands to perform with it each August on the Red Square. Music and military lovers alike come from all over Russia and beyond especially to watch this huge performance.

New Year’s Eve

Russian New Year celebrations are legendary and the Red Square’s annual bash-up is the greatest legend of them all. In the run-up to the 31st, the whole of the Red Square is transformed into a winter wonderland with a giant ice rink, ice slides and a village-sized Christmas market. On the night, thousands pack into the square to drink, eat, dance and sing the night away. Russia’s best-loved performers grace the huge stages on the Red Square and, after Mr Putin’s New Year’s speech, the jaw-dropping fireworks are released.

Did you know? In 1987 a German pilot landed his plane right in the Red Square. Mathias Rust was just 18 years old and a bit of a daredevil. Amazingly, he flew from Helsinki to Moscow without the Soviet authorities spotting him.

Visit the Red Square in Moscow Today

The Red Square is one of the easiest sights to see in Moscow. There are no tickets and no queues. There aren’t even security checks. However, getting into one of the many sites within the square, especially Lenin’s mausoleum, can be a challenge and requires planning.

For attractions such as the Kremlin and the State Historical Museum, tickets must be bought in advance during the summer high-season to avoid dreadful queues. Lenin’s mausoleum has the longest queue but, because entrance is free, the only way to circumvent the queue is to arrive one hour early. It is also vital to google which days the mausoleum will be open during your trip as it only opens a few days a week for three hours at a time. If visiting the Kremlin, it is unbelievably helpful to download the free Kremlin app before visiting. The Kremlin is filled with so many different buildings spread out over such a large area that without the app it’s incredibly easy to get lost.

England's Rosie Davies slipped six shots off the pace at the Investec South African Women's Open with Belgium's Manon de Roey to take a three-stroke lead into Sunday's final round.

Davies, who shared the lead after round one and trailed de Roey by just one shot after round two, carded a second successive one-under 71 and is now at eight under for the event at Erinvale Country & Golf Estate.

The 34-year-old was at 10 under for the tournament but then double bogeyed 17 and is now tied for fifth with compatriot Gabriella Cowley who, like Davies, is eying a first win on the Ladies European Tour.

De Roey has one victory on the Ladies European Tour so far, at the 2022 Aramco Team Series - Bangkok when she beat Sweden's Johanna Gustavsson by three strokes.

Her nearest challenger in South Africa is now Ines Laklalech on 11 under, with the Moroccan recording a seven-under 65, in which she went blemish-free across her first 16 holes.

However, Laklalech then dropped two shots at the 16th, denting her hopes of overhauling De Roey on the final day and securing a second Ladies European Tour title, after the 2022 Lacoste Ladies Open de France.

La Vuelta Femenina 2024: Route, How to Watch, and Favorites

Demi Vollering, Kasia Niewiadoma, and Gaia Realini will battle for the red jersey on the challenging eight-stage tour across Spain.

9th la vuelta femenina 2023 stage 5

Gear-obsessed editors choose every product we review. We may earn commission if you buy from a link. How we test gear.

As of this Sunday, April 29, we’re officially in Grand Tour season, as the eight-stage Vuelta Femenina kicks off with a 16-kilometer team time trial in Valencia, Spain.

9th la vuelta femenina 2023 stage 7

Last year’s race covered just over 740 kilometers over the course of its seven stages. It was won by Movistar’s Annemiek van Vleuten , who, with the win, became the first woman to win all three of the major women’s stage races (the Vuelta, along with the Tour de France Femmes, and the Giro Donne). She beat SD Worx’s Demi Vollering but just nine seconds. Trek-Segafredo’s Gaia Realini rounded out the podium in third.

But van Vleuten retired after last season, meaning there’s no chance for a repeat winner. And given the variety of winners we’ve seen in the women’s peloton this spring, this race is truly up for grabs.

This year’s race adds a stage, making it eight in total. All of them stick exclusively to Spain’s northwest and northcentral regions.

It kicks off with what should be a blistering team time trial over 16 lake-flat kilometers. From there, the second stage will take riders from Buñol to Moncofa over 118 hilly kilometers, including just one Category 3 climb. As that climb comes 40 kilometers from the finish, expect a bunch sprint.

The third stage is a 131-kilometer medium mountain stage that will take riders from Lucena to Teruel and feature another Category 3 ascent. Stage four covers 142 kilometers from Molina de Aragón to Zaragoza and is mostly downhill from start to finish.

map

The 113 kilometers of stage 5 are where the peloton first gets into proper mountains, with a pair of category 2 climbs—one of which provides the day’s summit finish—on the menu. Stage 6 is the opposite of stage 4, taking riders on a daylong gradual uphill from Tarazona to Laguna Negra, ending with a category 1 summit finish that very well could determine the race’s overall winner.

Stage 7 could be the last chance for the sprinters to leave their mark. However, the final 500 meters of the day’s 126 kilometers ramp up to 10%, so look for a punchier rider to take the win there.

The Vuelta Feminina will end with an 89-kilometer ride from Distrito Telefónca to ValdesquíMadrid. The ride features a pair of category-1 climbs, the last of which leads to the race’s final finish line.

Complete information on each stage can be found here .

How to Watch

The Vuelta Feminina will be broadcast in the US via Peacock , which costs $5.99 per month or $59.99 per year. In Canada, the race will be broadcast via FloSports , which costs $12.50 per month or $150 per year.

Live Stream Schedule - All times Eastern (EDT) 04/28 - Stage 1 Valencia > Valencia - 9:45 a.m. - 11:45 a.m. 04/29 - Stage 2 Buñol > Moncófar - 9:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. 04/30 - Stage 3 Lucena del Cid > Teruel - 9:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. 05/01 - Stage 4 Molina de Aragón > Zaragoza - 9:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. 05/02 - Stage 5 Huesca > Jaca - 9:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. 05/03 - Stage 6 Tarazona > Vinuesa - 9:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. 05/04 - Stage 7 San Esteban de Gormaz > Sigüenza - 8:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. 05/05 - Stage 8 Distrito Telefónica. Madrid > Valdesquí - 6:00 a.m. - 8:00 a.m.

Riders to Watch

While the final roster for the race is yet to be final, several confirmed names promise another competitive edition. Among the riders targeting the general classification are Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift champion Demi Vollering of SD Worx-Protime, Gaia Realini of Lidl-Trek, who graced the podium last year, and the consistently impressive Kasia Niewiadoma of SD Worx-Protime. With the absence of retired defending champion Anemiek Van Vleuten and Vollering showing signs of wavering form this season, the battle for the coveted red jersey appears wide open.

Other riders to watch are the 2024 Tour of Flanders champion Elisa Longo Borghini of Lidl-Trek, Canyon//SRAM’s Ricarda Bauernfeind , and Mavi García of Liv Alula Jayco.

Probably wouldn't have bought 3 colors knowing what I know now. ...
