15 Dave Chappelle summer shows approved

On Wednesday, May 3, the Miami Township Board of Zoning Appeals, or BZA, gave the green light to another series of outdoor shows hosted by local resident and comedian Dave Chappelle at the Wirrig family pavilion. 

In a vote of 4–0, the board approved a temporary conditional use request by pavilion owner Steve Wirrig to hold 15 ticketed performances at his rural property on weekends over the coming summer. 

BZA Chair Richard Silliman cited the performances’ economic benefits to Miami Township and Yellow Springs in his motion to approve Wirrig’s application. Along with Silliman, board members David Neuhardt, Geoffrey Garrison and Barbara Krabec voted affirmatively, with Amy Achor recusing herself from the decision. 

Owing to the Wirrig Pavilion’s agricultural zoning status within the township, any commercial activity on the land must be approved by the BZA. Wednesday’s meeting was Wirrig’s fifth time in three years approaching the board to authorize a series of Chappelle shows. 

Located between U.S. 68 North and Meredith Road, the pavilion has been the site of dozens of star-studded performances hosted by Chappelle in the summers since 2020. Past shows have been headlined by such celebrities as John Stewart, Chris Rock, Sarah Silverman, David Letterman and others. 

This year’s temporary use permit extends between June 1 and Oct. 8, but as Wirrig told the News following the meeting, no firm schedule for the shows has been set. 

“That’s entirely up to Dave and the production team,” he said. “It’s possible that the first one would be in July.”

A number of stipulations for the shows were outlined in Wirrig’s application. Shows will occur no more than three times per week, and will not be held on Sundays, except for three-day holiday weekends. Consistent with the 2022 shows, capacity will not exceed 1,000 ticketed attendees. However, no more than 200 cars may be parked at the pavilion. A bussing service will accommodate the overflow. Local food trucks and vendors are permitted to be present at each performance. 

While ticket prices for the coming series have not been set, previous year’s tickets have been around $400 for a pair. 

Unlike the April 28, 2022, BZA hearing when Wirrig stood before a crowd of 60-some attendees when he sought the board’s approval for 24 shows for 2022, this Wednesday’s meeting was far smaller. Approximately 20 area residents were in attendance. Four people spoke in favor of the shows and urged the board’s approval; none spoke against Wirrig’s request. 

Also present for Wednesday’s meeting were Zoning Inspector Richard Zopf and the board’s attorney Jennifer Huber.

Tickets for Dave Chappelle’s Yellow Springs shows go on sale Monday

YELLOW SPRINGS — Comedian Dave Chappelle is gearing up to return to the cornfields of Yellow Springs for three shows next month.

Billed as Dave Chappelle and Friends, the “Yellow Springs Summer Camp 2023 Comedy Shows” will take place at the Wirrig Pavilion July 6-8.

Tickets for the shows go on sale Monday, June 26, at 10 a.m. at ticketmaster.com .

Chappelle originated these shows to provide “economic and comedic relief during the pandemic,” according to Live Nation.

No cellphones, cameras, or recording devices will be allowed at the shows and all phones and smart watches will be secured in special pouches that will be unlocked at the end of each show.

Dave Chappelle  will headline a series of shows in his hometown of Yellow Springs, Ohio, this summer.

The comedian will bring his "Dave Chappelle and Friends" shows to the Wirrig Pavilion on July 3, 5, and 6.

Tickets go on sale to the general public at noon on Friday, June 21, and can be purchased through  Ticketmaster .

Cellphones are not allowed during the shows and must be secured in locked pouches. If you need to use your phone, you must return to the distribution tent at the venue's entrance. Anyone caught using a cell phone in the venue will be immediately removed.

The upcoming shows will be Chappelle's first time performing in Yellow Springs since he hosted a three-night comedy series at the Wirrig Pavilion  last year. The comedian also hopped on stage at the 2023 Cincinnati Music Festival to introduce headliner Snoop Dogg .

Dave Chappelle announces Yellow Springs comedy shows

YELLOW SPRINGS, Ohio (WKRC) - Comedian Dave Chappelle will return to the stage in Yellow Springs for three hometown shows on July 3, 5, and 6.

The show is billed as "Dave Chappelle and Friends," the series he created to provide economic and comedic relief during the pandemic. The group has since gained national attention and attracts fans from across the country.

Chappelle and other comics will perform at the Wirrig Pavilion and tickets go on local presale Thursday and then the general on-sale Friday at 12 p.m. on ticketmaster.com .

Chappelle, the 2019 recipient of the prestigious Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, has earned him more than 30 nominations and awards in television and film for projects that include his sketch comedy television series “Chappelle’s Show.”

YELLOW SPRINGS, Ohio (WKEF) -- Comedian Dave Chappelle has been approved to hold 15 shows in Yellow Springs this summer.

Approved by the Miami Township Zoning Board of Appeals, the summer comedy shows are scheduled to happen at the Wirrig Pavilion between the dates of June 1 and October 8.

Dave Chappelle Opening A Comedy Club and Restaurant In His Hometown Yellow Springs, Ohio

Comedian Dave Chappelle is staying true to his Ohio roots by opening a comedy club in his hometown of Yellow Springs, Ohio.

After three decades of success as a standup comic, the Chappelle’s Show creator will be adding to his legacy in the form of a brick-and-mortar establishment where people can come to laugh and eat.

On Sept. 14, a planning commission in Yellow Springs unanimously approved the plans to launch construction on Chappelle’s comedy club, WHIO reports .

The architect overseeing the project is Max Crome of Crome Architecture, who is mapping out how his team will transform the Miami Township firehouse into what will now be known as the “Firehouse Eatery,” along with the “Live From YS” comedy club attached on the side.

Development plans show that the eatery will be open every day until 10 p.m., with the comedy club hosting scheduled shows four days a week, between 6 p.m. and 2 a.m.

“I’m not just trying to make a club, I’m trying to make a way,” Chappelle said during the planning commission meeting. “I’m trying to make a venue for our talents to be showcased, as well as my friends’ talents, so we can shine and be all the great things we can be in the world.”

The construction begins nine months after Chappelle first unveiled his plans to turn the former firehouse into a comedy club, EW reports .

Crome says the new club will provide an “intimate” setting for comedians and have a maximum capacity of 140 people. Chappelle says the size will be much like the setting of comedy clubs Chappelle performed at in New York City at the start of his career.

Chappelle is confident that he will be able to bring out big-name comedians to the comedy club. His name and respect in the comedy world are more than enough to persuade his close friends and comedy legends to make their way to Yellow Springs, Ohio.

“If we build this thing, I will tell you, all the greats will come. They’re very excited about it,” Chappelle assured the group.
