The Surprising Secret Shared Between the Mitsubishi Evo and the Dodge Journey

The legendary Mitsubishi Evo is a polarizing piece of automotive history. The car has its signature flaws, but its fans are devoted. What does this whippy sport sedan have in common with a bulky budget SUV ? A lot more than meets the eye.

Mitsubishi changed the game with the Lancer Evolution

A yellow Mitsubishi Evolution sport sedan

The first Mitsubishi Evolution hit the streets in 1992. Powered by a 2.0-L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, the Evo was fast. This car was known for being a lightweight 303 hp lightning bolt. It was fun to drive and easy to push to its limits.

From 1996 to 1999, Evos won the World Rally Championship. American enthusiasts coveted the Evo, which was unavailable on the U.S. market until 2003. This is the same year the car was featured in ‘2 Fast 2 Furious’, solidifying its legendary status.

As the buyers that had idealized the Evo in the 1990s began to age out of the fast but stiff and brutal car, sales dropped. The market was adapting away from the speedy and immersive car. It was a race car, not a family sedan.

Diamond-Star Motors was a historic joint venture

Mitsubishi and Chrysler formed a business relationship in 1970, birthing Diamond-Star Motors. The two automakers co-developed the GS platform under this name. Four separate cr brands built models on this platform. Out of all of the vehicles that share it, no two are as different as the Mitsubishi Evolution and the Dodge Journey.

One is a budget SUV with a rental feel, and the other is a racing legend with incredible pickup. Despite being polar opposites, the two share the same GS platform. The Evo was compared to the STI with its communicative handling and top-notch all-wheel drive. Its platform sibling, the Dodge Journey, is the cheapest SUV on the market.

The Jeep Patriot and Compass are both built on the GS platform, the Dodge Avenger, a few Peugeots, and a few Citroens. Among all of these models, the Mitsubishi Evolution stands out from the crowd.

If the Mitsubishi Evo is fast and furious, the Dodge Journey is slow and complacent

A blue Dodge Journey SUV in the snow

Dodge ended production of the Journey in 2020 after the demand for the thrifty SUV dropped. The seven-passenger vehicle was woefully underpowered with a 172 hp 2.4-L 4-cylinder engine that Car and Driver called “antiquated.” The interior was lacking in upscale materials. It was criticized for feeling like cheap plastic.

What the Journey lacked in refinements, it made up for in practicality. The configurable interior was flexible for a variety of cargo. Second-row floor storage and a passenger seat storage bin gave the SUV plenty of places for gear. The 2020 Dodge Journey started at $25,170 and had two trim levels, the SE Value and the Crossroad.

The Dodge Journey felt like a glorified minivan to many drivers. Its cheap interior, unresponsive handling, and slow acceleration made it feel low quality. It’s as different from the spritely Evo as possible, but the two share so much in structure. This pairing of platform siblings is a striking reminder of just how far a design can be pushed.

Lost Dodge-Mitsubishi Prototype Last Seen in 2010 Could’ve Become an American Lancer Evo

By James Gilboy

Updated on Jan 18, 2022 10:17 AM EST

5 minute read

If Chrysler’s “Prangler” prototype has anything to teach us, it’s that some truly unholy things go on behind the closed doors of car companies’ prototype shops. Be it because of its innumerable partnerships with rivals, or simply whatever’s served in the cafeteria there, Chrysler’s, in particular, seems to churn out more oddities than most, another of which came to light in pictures posted Wednesday night to social media. They show a slightly restyled Mitsubishi Lancer rebadged as a Dodge Caliber, which was reportedly meant to spawn a Lancer Evo-equivalent coupe that would’ve brought honor back to the SRT4 name.

The pictures you see here came from a since-deleted Reddit post, whose author claims to have taken them in 2010 at the Chrysler Technology Center in Auburn Hills, Michigan. They granted The Drive permission to use them under the condition of anonymity. The images depict what is very clearly a 2007-2017 Mitsubishi Lancer with Dodge’s signature crossed-bars grille and Dodge badging, which presents it as a Caliber SXT.

message-editor%2F1642111519972-ed66ms2.jpeg

“I had just started at Chrysler in early 2010 and had to go out to ‘lot 27’ a lot to pickup/dropoff test vehicles,” the Chrysler employee who snapped the photos told me. “Lot 27 is one of the larger outdoor storage lots on the grounds. A lot of the parking lot is clearly visible from public roads and wasn’t considered secure at all. A lot of spy shots are taken of this lot when car-covers were missing due to negligence and/or weather. Anything really special was supposed to be parked in one of many other secured lots.”

“I made a lot of trips out there just to ogle, because there was also a Viper ACR-X, the Dodge Envi electric car, European competitive cars, crashed cars, and this ‘Dodge Caliber.’ I took a lot of ‘illegal’ pictures over the years just for memories, this was one that I almost completely forgot about and always wanted an answer to.”

message-editor%2F1642111339167-85pqyas.jpeg

Sources inside Dodge couldn’t identify this prototype and disputed its reason for existence, with one stating it “may have been a vehicle for Mexico”—another, meanwhile, emphatically disagreed with that. I reached out to Mitsubishi to see if it had its own explanation, but I may have already found the answer, as there appears to be some indication of this Caliber’s origin online.

Dodge was planning to replace the Neon after its discontinuation in 2005 with a sedan called the Rebel, jointly developed with Mitsubishi on a shared global platform. A version of this platform already underpinned the Caliber crossover, as Allpar reports, which on its introduction in 2006 precluded Dodge’s need for another compact car. This apparently left the jointly developed model to debut in 2007 as the new Mitsubishi Lancer, which in turn spawned the Dodge prototype seen here.

As this Caliber sedan was badged SXT rather than SRT and didn’t have the Lancer Evolution X’s rear spoiler, it’s definitely not Dodge’s equivalent to the Evo; a car we don’t know for sure ever existed—though Allpar claims one was in the works. They say Chrysler played a significant role in the Evo X’s development, with the engineering team behind the esteemed Neon ACR contributing expertise, and Chrysler itself apparently helping develop a two-door version (presumably a Dodge exclusive) that never saw production.

message-editor%2F1642111441283-2016_lancer_evolution_fe-20-source.jpg

It’s not clear why the Dodge Caliber sedan—and thus Dodge’s rumored SRT Evo—never saw production, though the available evidence doesn’t make it difficult to guess. At the time the photo was taken, the Caliber crossover was barely a year from discontinuation, its sales having plummeted in the wake of the recession, due in part no doubt to its poor critical reception . Why Chrysler didn’t ditch the Caliber name for Rebel is beyond me, though why it chose not to revert to selling rebranded Mitsubishis as it did in the ’90s is understandable.

By that point, the Dodge Dart was nearly ready to fill the hole the Caliber would leave, giving Chrysler little reason to resell Lancers, and thus, its own version of the Evo. Sadly, that means the car one imagines would’ve marked a happier finale for the SRT4 badge than the Caliber SRT4 never saw the light of day. These prototype shots still fuel the imagination, though, and make one wonder if they’d have stood in for the Charger in an F&F franchise film or two.

A Dodge Evo X ????

  • Add to quote

How about a 2012 2.4L Dodge Avenger that has an EVO X ported intake manifold with fuel rail and a EVO X exhaust header??? Yep they share the same head and a lot of other parts like starters, CAMS, and other long and short block parts..

Attachments

Engine Auto part Vehicle Car Automotive engine part

Interesting. That's not an Evo X exhaust manifold but I'd be intrested to see what it would do with an Evo X turbo back there.

dodge journey evo x

it is a world engine design yes. however I don't think an evo x turbo or twin scroll mainfold would work. Im not positive on the dodges but I know the Hyundai cylinder heads are different from the mitsu ones. I would be close to believe the same on the dodge as each manufacture does there own different design to the world engine.

No ur wrong. The older model like eclips/plymonth,stealth/3gt yes share body/engines.Now evos x are 100% made in japan.avenger with a swap lancer maybe?

LOL what? I work for hyundai so I have torn apart numerous of the hyundai world engine desgins (Santa fe, genisis, sonata Etc. Etc.). The overall engine layout between Dodge, hyundai and mitsu are all the same but each company does there own alterations to numerous parts on the motor. It's not as much alike as the old 4g platform which all 3 corporations shared back in the early 2000 and beyond. Edit:you can also throw kia into the mix as well as there hyundai sister company

I disagree, Doom is not wrong. Mitsu engines are used in many cars - my Kia has Mitsu engine that is very similar to 4b11, however, I don't think there is even a swap here, it's probably the engine from factory designed by Mitsu. It's not Evo engine though.

dodge journey evo x

This doesn't really surprise me. Dodge has used Mitsu engines/parts for quite a few years now.

dodge journey evo x

the 4b1 engine is used in many cars... Its is if i am right called a world engine. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_Engine_Alliance "Global Engine Manufacturing Alliance LLC, or GEMA is the manufacturing arm of the Global Engine Alliance and consisted of five factories worldwide; two in Dundee, Michigan, United States, two in South Korea and one in Shiga, Japan. Production began in 2005, with an annual capacity of approximately two million engines; each plant was capable of producing 420,000. Twenty different automobile models from the three companies will use the engines. Chrysler had expected to use GEMA produced engines in ten models and projects, and buy up to 840,000 GEMA produced engines annually. The Dundee plants, as of Dec., 2012, are now officially no longer part of the alliance, having been bought out by Chrysler and renamed the Chrysler Dundee Engine Plant(s).[7]" Now 4b11T is also used in other car like Hyundai. BUT it is NOT a same engine as the Evo has. Different internals and part specs etc. Hence the engine is not as sturdy and efficient etc as the evo engine. But makes an easy swap to put the real evo engine in it. apples and oranges.

dodge journey evo x

This is kinda true I had a caliber srt and the engine is similar to the evo x ...... if i find the links bout it il post them here

dodge journey evo x

It is probably the 4B11 block, not the 4B11T

http://www.evoxforums.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-1758.html

dodge journey evo x

When I had my lancer GTS I boosted the 4B12 2.4L block using everything off a Ralliart. It all bolted straight up and fit perfectly under the hood. Exhaust manifold, turbo and downpipe were simple bolt ons and I know a lot of guys in the Lancer scene take the 2.4 internals and head gasket from the Dodge Caliber SRT4 because that car supposedly has a modified version of the 4B12.

dodge journey evo x

I'd assume we could probably do the same if we wanted to. Many of the 8/9 crowed have used the 4g64 (2.4 liter) block for bigger displacement builds. I don't see why we couldn't use a 4b12 to do something very similar.

I was thinking the same thing. On the lancer forums there have been a few guys with that did a 4B11T swap into their cars so I don't see why you couldn't build and sleeve the 4B12. I'm sure there's a lot more that goes into it but I don't have to money to jump down that hole. haha With the 4B12 I was able to make 270/297 on a dynojet on 12lbs of boost and stock internals.

dodge journey evo x

No reason for us to use a 4b12 block, it's not nearly as good or the same type of thing as the 4g63/4g64 cars. People have used the 4b12 crank to do a 2.3L motor and almost all have had some issues, no one does that anymore. For 4b11T people we can simply overbore and use the manley crank and go up to a 2.4L safely, no reason to try other things.

Oh I'm sure a lot more has to go into it. Idk much about the 4b12, but if it doesn't have 4 bolt mains then it's a total loss in my eyes. Not that I care for that kinda swap. I was just saying I'm sure it's possible.

Possible sure...just not worth it.

Dodge has been using Mitsubishi engines and parts for some time now.

Yeah it is the same head as the EVO's .. the 4B10, 4B11 and 4B12 engine are different displacement but have the same basic head. Yeah some of the oil and water ports are different but the same bolt lay out for the head. Here is a link to the header ... http://www.ebay.com/itm/OBX-SS-Exha...ZEV-/201360573080?hash=item2ee2068298&vxp=mtr or even this one ... http://roadracemotorsports.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1_6_10&products_id=224 and this is the intake manifold ..... http://www.maperformance.com/maperformance-rev-2-intake-manifold-mitsubishi-evo-x.html The same engine that is in the avenger is a lot of other dodges and jeeps. The heads are also the same. Even the SRT4 Caliber has the same head and engine. It is running about 9lbs on stock internals. Even the starter on the avenger had mitsu stamped all over it.

Still not exactly the same. Doom26464 did a whole documented teardown of an evo 4b11t and mentioned how the ports in the cylinder head were much bigger than the Hyundai 4b11t. I doubt dodge would have the same exact head as mitsu

The also major reason the cylinder heads are different due to the hyubdai block is open deck Block where the mitsu is semi-closed deck block. As for the dodge variants I have no idea as I have never been inside one. However I would assume they are possible different as well due to there being variants between mitsu and hyundai. Each manufacture can Taylor the engine to there needs. PS hyundai also does not label there engine as a 4b engine it is named theta2

Cars You Wouldn't Expect To Share A Platform

An automaker developing a platform that can be used to build several vehicles on, or an entire range of vehicles, has become commonplace. It used to be a dirty little secret that cars like the Jaguar S-Type used the same basic underpinnings as the Lincoln LS. Nowadays, however, it's not too surprising to find out that the Honda CR-V rides on the same chassis as the Civic or that brands under the Volkswagen umbrella, like Audi and Porsche, share the occasional platform. Doing so decreases the cost of development as well as manufacture, so now platforms are often developed with that in mind. Doing so has created some odd bedfellows, though, and sometimes, the most unlikely vehicles are actually more closely related than you might think. Here are some of the cars that are completely different yet share the same platform.

Mitsubishi Evolution X/Dodge Journey

Diamond-Star Motors (DSM) was a joint venture between Chrysler and Mitsubishi. It resulted from a long and convoluted story that started in 1970, but one of the results was the GS platform co-developed and shared by the two automakers. Quite a few cars came out of the project from no fewer than four different brands, but the most diverse pairing has to be the legendary Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X and the Dodge Journey. One is a performance missile of a compact sedan that marked the end of an era for Mitsubishi, and the other is a frumpy three-row crossover SUV. One had a 291 hp turbocharged four-cylinder engine matched to a sophisticated all-wheel-drive system and went toe-to-toe with Subaru's rallying heritage. The other had a range of engines and an R/T version but was ultimately a good little vehicle for a frugal family. The full list of vehicles using the GS platform includes the Jeep Patriot, Jeep Compass, Dodge Avenger, a couple of Peugeot and Citreon vehicles, and more.

Lamborghini Urus/Audi A4

As well as Audi and Porsche, Lamborghini is under the Volkswagen Group's umbrella. So when Lamborghini decided it finally needed to deliver a crazy fast crossover, it was only natural that it would inherit the MLBevo platform used for the Porsche Cayenne, Audi Q8, and even the Bentley Bentayga. But that's also the platform that underpins Audi's compact luxury sedan, the A4. The Urus uses Audi's 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 to generate 641 hp and lapped the Nurburgring in 7 minutes and 47 seconds, while the Audi is pretty humdrum by comparison, powered by a 201-horsepower 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder.

Other models underpinned by the MLBevo platform include numerous Audis like the A6, Q5, and even the electric e-tron crossover.

Jeep Grand Cherokee/Mercedes-Benz M-Class

A lot has been made of the Chrysler 300 and its relationship to the Mercedes E-Class, but it's not as close as the internet would have you think. However, as of 2011 to 2021, the Jeep Grand Cherokee's WK2 platform is actually a modified take on the Mercedes-Benz M-Class and GLE-Class W166 platform. Both are completely different vehicles, and while the GLE-Class is the family vehicle we would choose for commuting, it doesn't hold a candle to the Grand Cherokee for off-road trips. Some might even be more surprised to know the Dodge Durango is also based on the Mercedes W166 chassis.

BMW 7 Series/Rolls-Royce Ghost

If you climb into a front seat of a Rolls-Royce Ghost, you'll find the iDrive controller from a BMW. That's because the Ghost, Dawn, and Wraith are all underpinned by the same platform as BMW's F01-generation 7 Series. In total, the Ghost shares around 20 percent of its parts with the 7 Series, but that 80 percent Rolls-Royce adds over $200,000 to the price. The 2020 model moved on to use Rolls-Royce's own platform, but the Wraith and the Dawn still sit on a BMW chassis, making them one hell of an upgrade from a 7 Series.

Audi TT RS/Volkswagen Atlas

Volkswagen's MQB platform underpins a vast selection of cars and is adaptable enough that Volkswagen used it for the mid-sized Atlas crossover while Audi built the third-generation TT on the same architecture. That includes the ballistically quick Audi TT RS boasting a 394-hp five-cylinder turbo engine matched to a quattro AWD system. The TT RS will hit 60 mph from zero in 3.6 seconds and attack a track with enthusiastic agility. On the other hand, the Atlas is sensibly transporting American families from A to B or going on a weekly shopping run, employing 2.0T four-cylinders or V6 engines to do the heavy lifting. They might share a lot in common, but these two products cater to entirely different buyers.

Alfa Romeo MiTo/Ram ProMaster City

The Small Common Components and Systems platform (SCCS) is developed by Fiat and underpins many European vehicles. It has a couple of variations, including the Small Wide 4x4 version that the Jeep Renegade uses and a LWB version used on the Fiat 500L. The subcompact Alfa Romeo MiTo uses the standard variation and is a three-door "supermini" that was built between 2008 and 2018, boasting small dimensions and either a two or four-cylinder engine. The long-wheelbase SCCS platform gave Europe the Fiat Doblo panel van and "leisure activity vehicle." The American version of the Doblo is the Ram ProMaster City, which is built in Turkey to circumvent the Chicken Tax. One's a subcompact hatchback to rival the Mini Hardtop while the other is a commercial panelvan, making these two very unlikely siblings.

Nissan 370Z/Infiniti QX70

We were going to bring up the Nissan GT-R here, but the current model runs on a heavily modified version of the Nissan FM (Front Midships) platform. However, both the current 370Z and the now discontinued Infiniti QX70 ran on the standard FM architecture. The QX70 started out as the Infiniti FX in 2002 and ran out of road in 2017 as the QX70, complete with a Sebastian Vettel Edition. The QX70 was a luxury crossover, but it was a bit of a wolf in sheep's clothing and even used the same 3.7-liter V6 from the 370Z sports car.

Honda Pilot/Ridgeline

When you see online commenters writing off the Ridgeline as a Pilot with a truck bed, they're sort of right. Both current generations of the crossover and truck are built on Honda's "global light truck platform," however, the Ridgeline is an extended version, and the chassis is strengthened considerably. It also has a 17 percent stronger front structure and a 31 percent stronger rear, giving it 28 percent more torsional rigidity over the first-generation Ridgeline. That makes the Ridgeline suitable for the hauling, towing, and off-road needs of most midsize truck buyers, while the 73 percent of Pilot components still found on the Ridgeline make it a comfortable truck for everyday use.

Ford Galaxy/Lincoln Continental

The final generation of the Lincoln Continental was the longest and most luxurious yet. To commemorate the 80th anniversary of the 1939 Lincoln Continental, an 80th Anniversary Coach Door Edition and limited to 80 units. Cabot Coach Builders completed the final assembly with a six-inch wheelbase extension, rear-hinged passenger doors, and a reconfigured rear-passenger space. But also built on Ford's CD4 platform is the Galaxy, a large multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) built in Spain and mainly for the European market. Essentially, it's a minivan without sliding doors and the complete opposite of the Continental.

2008 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X Review

Michael Karesh

Anyone who’s driven one of the first nine iterations of the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution (a.k.a. Evo) approaches the tenth fully expecting chest-flattening acceleration and spleen-rupturing cornering. Obviously, the Evo X’s engine and chassis are bound (and determined) to continue the model’s budget supercar-killer tradition. But there’s another less welcome Evo tradition: denture destroying suspension and a Gladware interior. Will the Evo X’s ride quality and interior materials once again conspire to kill the love for all but the masochists among us?

The Evo’s new X-terior has moved Mitsubishi’s compact sedan from the bargain basement to the penthouse suite. The X’s profile now strongly resembles the Acura TSX and Volvo S40. The new Evo’s snout sports a huge black inverted trapezoid-grille, fender vents, a rear wing and body kit. Thanks to the car’s more svelte shape, the macho mods don’t scream “teenage toy.” Of course, it helps that Audi has made the world safe for gargantuan grilles, and that overpriced body kits are now common on overpriced German machinery.

2008 mitsubishi lancer evolution x review

The old Evo’s interior was cheaper than a one-star Romanian hotel. The new Lancer’s interior is a bit more upmarket, but it’s still a third-rate romance, low rent [Buick] rendezvous. Mitsubishi would have been well-advised to replicate the Alcantara interior of the Prototype X concept. One nit an upholstery shop can’t fix: the semi-swoopy exterior yields a windshield base that stretches out like an African Savanna; it’s a bit alienating for a “driver’s car.” Well-bolstered Recaro seats compensate.

Like just about every car (and person) in recent years, the new Evo’s gained some weight. Yet unlike Subaru, Mitsubishi refused to forsake the World Rally Championship’s 2.0-liter rule in their rally car production variant. Two liters of displacement for a 3500lbs. car? That’s like playing croquet with a toothbrush, isn’t it?

2008 mitsubishi lancer evolution x review

Nope. The Evo’s four-pot may not deliver the Subaru STI’s seamless shove, but once the revs crest 4000 rpm, the Mitsu’s mini-mill pulls like an amphetamine-crazed tractor. We’re torquing 300 ft.-lbs. of twist. And the X’s engine revs so freely that getting into the pleasure zone is not a problem. And then, suddenly, 291 horsepower at 6500 rpm.

Thanks to premium-powered variable valve timing and turbo technology, boost lag is also not an issue– provided you keep the revs up. Otherwise, it’s a second of “what the?” followed by “Holy CRAP!” Missing–and missed: a sixth ratio in the GSR’s manual transmission. The Evo’s engine spins at nearly 3000 rpm at 60mph. An extra cog certainly would have helped boost the mpgs from a never-caned 16/22, in case anyone’s wondering.

2008 mitsubishi lancer evolution x review

The Evo’s strangely-hyphenated, driver-adjustable Super All Wheel-Control deploys a pair of trick, electronically-controlled differentials. Minus the jargon-laden physics lessons and references to the anti-HAL handling nanny (I’m sorry Dave, I’m afraid you can’t not do that), the nose-heavy compact feels balanced, agile, controllable, poised, planted, secure, balletic and ballistic.

Like any great driver’s car, the Evo X makes you a better driver than you are without taking you out of the equation (in every sense of the phrase). Point the Evo where you want it to go, and it goes there confidently, smoothly and quickly. The Evo X’s steering isn’t as quick and sharp as before, but compared to just about any other sedan you can buy— including (especially?) BMW’s new M3— it offers a highly responsive, entirely intimate helm.

2008 mitsubishi lancer evolution x review

There’s only one flaw: a tug at the wheel when digging into the throttle on turn exits. Never mind. Whether going, turning, and stopping, the new Evo has an eager, playful nature that’s all-too-uncommon in the post-Lexus age. Mitsubishi’s supercar remains a blast to drive, even in typical suburban driving. At the same time, it feels much more polished and controllable than before. You don’t have to push it hard to enjoy it. And if you do push it hard, you’ll enjoy it even more.

With the old Evo, potential buyers who could see past the crap interior were put off by its rock-hard ride. Here, as elsewhere, the new Evo ups its game without losing its character. No doubt the new lightweight 18” wheels and improved rubber– plenty pricey and not anywhere near immortal asymmetrical Yokohama ADVANS– have helped matters. The Evo’s no more a Lexus than you are, but it’s not a go-kart, either. Some BMWs are worse (128i anyone?).

2008 mitsubishi lancer evolution x review

The new Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X has eliminated the previous car’s faults without killing the joy. The punishment is gone; the fun remains. Unfortunately, there is a new and major downside: price. The Evo’s hardware is a steal for $35,600. That’s premium compact territory– without a premium compact interior or a premium compact brand. Those who can’t see themselves spending thirty-five large for a mainstream extreme machine, or simply don’t have a BMW-sized budget, might be happier in the upcoming Lancer Ralliart. Or not.

Apocryphos

Listen.. I own a 2008 Evo X. I only paid 30k for it new (GSR) and I modded it for a reflash and manual boost controller for a bonus of +100 HP. Serious. I can drive it hard and get 10 miles per gallon and a fucking boner from the adrenaline rush, or I can cruise and get 26-27 MPG. You can whine about the (relatively) cheap interior, but the value is there. The suspension on this thing is insane. It cannot be understood by words alone, it must be experienced. This car is like driving a rocket propelled laser beam. As one who doesn't give a shit about the "quality" of the interior, it is EXACTLY what I wanted. Yes, it is heavier than its ancestors. That doesn't change the fact that launching from first gear will literally force your face into a smile as your cheeks are pulled back by LAW. The laws of physics.

  • Tane94 I guess the Soul will soldier on with no further updates until sales drop off enough for discontinuance. Too bad.
  • SCE to AUX '“Driving Scores,” which were used by insurers to set rates and make policy cancellation decisions.' This data would also be used to lower rates for people who had better driver scores, so they aren't penalized for being in the same actuarial pool with derelicts. I understand the complaint, but at the end of the day the insurance companies have to amortize costs across their policyholders while still making a profit. Perhaps Texas isn't arguing this point, but simply the manner in which the data was collected and distributed. That's a worthy battle.
  • Tassos I HAVE NO ISSUE WITH GM COLLECTING DATA AND SELLING IT TO AUTHORITIES AND OTHER CORPORATIONS. ALL CORPORATIONS HAVE A RIGHT TO KNOW HOW PEOPLE DRIVE, THE STATUS OF THEIR REPRODUCTIVE CYCLES, AND WHETHER THEY ARE EVEN CONSIDERING TRAVELLING OUT OF STATE FOR ABORTIONS.

The Surprising Secret Shared Between the Mitsubishi Evo and the Dodge Journey

Mitsubishi has an interesting history with the Evo (all that EVO VI stuff), and the Journey has a lot in common with that car (steering wheel, seats, etc). But today the companies are separate, so what’s going on with them? When Mitsubishi announced the Evo -VI, it introduced a new trim level: Limited. This trim comes with a bunch of features, but the most noteworthy is its price: $6,400. The Limited was a big deal—not only was it the most expensive trim, but it was also the most expensive car in the Evo lineup by quite some margin. Which is to say, it was a big deal.

Mitsubishi is one of those Japanese brands synonymous with quality engineering, design and engineering. They build some of the most exciting race cars in the world yet they are also responsible for some of the most boring cars you will ever see in the showroom. However, this is not the case for its Japanese competitors.

There’s a lot of talk about the Mitsubishi Evo being the spiritual successor to the Dodge Journey. Some say the Evo is the best performance sedan on the market; others say it’s the most powerful. Some call it the most advanced, others the quickest. Most of what we know about the Evo, we know because of the Journey.

The legendary Mitsubishi Evo is a polarizing piece of automotive history. The car has its characteristic weaknesses, but its fans are loyal to it. What does this sporty sedan have in common with a clunky SUV? Much more than it seems.

Mitsubishi has changed the game with the Lancer Evolution

word-image-12002

Diamond-Star Motors was a historic joint venture

Mitsubishi and Chrysler entered into a business relationship in 1970, which resulted in the creation of Diamond-Star Motors. Under this name, the two car manufacturers jointly developed the GS platform. Four different brands of Cr have built models on this platform. Of all the cars that share a cabin, none is as different as the Mitsubishi Evolution and the Dodge Journey. One is a cheap SUV you can rent, and the other is a racing legend with an incredible pickup truck. Despite their opposites, both vehicles share the same GS platform. The Evo was compared to the STI with its communicative handling and quality all-wheel drive. The Dodge Journey is the most affordable SUV on the market. The Jeep Patriot and Compass are built on the GS platform, as are the Dodge Avenger, some Peugeots and some Citroens. Among all these models, the Mitsubishi Evolution stands out.

If the Mitsubishi Evo is fast and furious, the Dodge Journey is slow and complacent

Smoke from Russian fires blankets Moscow

Emergency officials said they were beginning to tame the fires which have spread across western and central Russia , but the capital woke to its worst bout of pollution yet after smog that dispersed yesterday returned with a vengeance.

Famous landmarks like the Ostankino television tower and St Basil's cathedral were reduced to outlines and the sun was a pale yellow orb. Visibility was down to 50 metres in some areas as coils of pungent smoke threaded into apartment buildings, offices and metro stations. Dozens of flights were cancelled at Domodedovo and Vnukovo airports in the south of the city.

Doctors advised Muscovites to stay home as the Department of Nature Protection and Environmental Management warned that carbon monoxide in the air was at five times acceptable levels.

Many of those who did venture out wore masks or clutched handkerchiefs to their faces. "It's unbearable, God knows what it's doing to our health," said Yulia Novikova, 25, who was hurrying home with groceries in Frunzenskaya district near the Moscow river. "I was just reading about the Great Smog of London in 1952. This looks a lot worse."

Vladimir Stepanov of the National Crisis Management Centre said fires were abating in the Urals and in the Volga region, but the situation remained tense around Moscow and Nizhny Novgorod. "Firefighters and rescuers did not let the fires approach populated areas," he said. "Not a single person has died over the past 24 hours."

The wildfires have so far claimed 50 lives and left more than 3,000 people homeless, prompting criticism of the official response to the crisis.

Earlier this week the prime minister, Vladimir Putin, promised he would personally monitor the reconstruction of destroyed homes via video images beamed to his home. State television showed the cameras being installed at building sites today.

Government officials said they could not have anticipated the heatwave that provoked the fires, the hottest in 140 years. The temperature in Moscow was above 36C all week. But critics have blamed complacent officials for ignoring warnings of blazes near villages.

United Russia, the pro-Kremlin party which dominates parliament, has boasted of sending volunteers to help extinguish the fires. But that claim was thrown into doubt yesterday when the party was accused of doctoring a photograph placed on its website.

A sharp-eyed blogger noticed that the picture showing volunteers apparently wrestling with a piece of timber in a smoky wood had been created in 2008 and altered in Photoshop last Saturday. The smoke, he claimed, had been added for effect.

United Russia immediately removed the picture but did not respond to requests for comment.

When I visited my inlaws in the Chita region of Siberia in summer 2009 there were numerous forest fires raging there. They told me it was an annual event and that the magnitude depended on how wet the summer was. We drove down roads on the way to my wife's home village with flames burning along both sides of the road. Kind of spooky. Not to mention the irritation to the respiratory system. Some days the wind blew the smoke away from us and other days the haze was unbearable.

"Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave."

"...for the system to be credible, people actually have to be deported at the end of the process."

US Congresswoman Barbara Jordan (D-TX)

Testimony to the House Immigration Subcommittee, February 24, 1995

They told me it was an annual event and that the magnitude depended on how wet the summer was.

"It is natural process."

The amount of sh!t Russians (and FSU) will put up with is amazing to me.

  5. 2008 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X Review

The new Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X has eliminated the previous car's faults without killing the joy. The punishment is gone; the fun remains.
