deacon blue tour 2024 uk

Deacon Blue

Performance date: wednesday 19th june 2024.

Deacon Blue announce ‘ All The Old 45s – The Very Best of Deacon Blue ’; and ‘ You Can Have It All – The Complete Albums Collection ’; both released September 1st 2023.

Thirty-five years since their debut single, ‘Dignity’ – and their debut album, Raintown – Deacon Blue have announced their most comprehensive greatest hits anthology to date, along with a career-spanning box set. All The Old 45s – The Very Best of Deacon Blue (2CD / double vinyl), and the 14CD You Can Have It All – The Complete Albums Collection , which includes a brand-new unplugged CD, will be released by Cooking Vinyl on September 1st, 2023.

All The Old 45s – The Very Best of Deacon Blue (2CD and double vinyl track listings below) coincides with the band’s UK and Ireland tour of the same name (dates below), and charts their multi-million selling history – from bringing ‘Chocolate Girl’ and ‘Dignity’ to life in the corner of a Glasgow basement, to skyscraping, stadium-filling hits like ‘Wages Day’ and ‘Real Gone Kid’, via their swoon-inducing tribute to Bacharach and David (‘I’ll Never Fall In Love Again’), their collective favourite single (‘Your Swaying Arms’), and one of the most significant songs in the Deacon Blue canon, which followed a split in 1994 and the loss of two original members: 2012’s comeback single ‘The Hipsters’ heralded a new lease of life for the group, and jump-started a second act that’s seen them more fired up, and prolific, than ever.

“We’ve added so many songs, albums and EPs which have become a strong part of Deacon Blue and our live repertoire since ‘The Hipsters’ in 2012,” says songwriter and vocalist Ricky Ross. “It feels like the right time to celebrate that; to release something that’s a true compilation of our music so far.”

You Can Have It All – The Complete Albums Collection (14CD box set details below), meanwhile, is Deacon Blue’s most comprehensive musical biography to date. It features all of their studio long-players, including – among other wonders – their landmark debut (1987’s Raintown ); their post-split return to glorious form (2012’s The Hipsters ); their myriad fan favourites, many of which reached the UK Top 5 (1991’s Fellow Hoodlums ; 1993’s Whatever You Say, Say Nothing ; 2020’s City Of Love ); and the one that knocked Madonna off the top of the charts (1989’s When The World Knows Your Name ). There are two well-loved b-sides and rarities compilations (1988’s Riches ; 1990’s Ooh Las Vegas ) – and there’s also a brand-new stripped-back compendium of hits, live favourites and cover versions, Peace Will Come .

“We really enjoyed playing our campfire sets on the last tour, when we deconstructed and rearranged songs to fit an acoustic format,” says Ricky Ross. “Essentially, Peace Will Come is an extension of that concept. It’s rough around the edges, but it captures the core of what we do. There are no overdubs or drops – we all just sang and played together and took the best take. Almost all of our albums are represented in its tracklisting – plus, we include a couple of cover versions we’ve often sung towards the end of our live shows. The one original song is the title track.”

Along with that new song, ‘Peace Will Come’ – a unifying hymn for the ages, which echoes Deacon Blue’s earliest single – the unplugged CD revels in fresh takes on harmonic career-highs like ‘Chocolate Girl’ (from Raintown ), ‘Delivery Man’ (from 2016’s Believers ), and ‘In Our Room’ (from City of Love ) – and that’s not to mention gorgeous renditions of Bruce Springsteen’s ‘Dancing in the Dark’, and their long-standing live encore of Bob Dylan’s ‘Forever Young’. Recording the Peace Will Come CD has been a galvanising experience for the band, says Ross. “It ended up being a vital artistic exercise for us. After we’d finished, I did think – ‘Why have we never done this before?’”

The packaging for both All The Old 45s and You Can Have It All features rare photos from over the years, and extensive liner notes with new insights from all current members of Deacon Blue, who reflect on the songs – and albums, and memories – that mean the most to them.

It sees Ross wax lyrical on ‘Wages Day’ (“ As a songwriter, you get so many gifts every year, and your job is to know when to accept them,” he laughs. “That was one… ”); co-vocalist Lorraine McIntosh on dance-rock juggernaut and enduring live highlight ‘Your Town’ (“ That’s one of my favourites; it’s got this unbelievable energy and power
”); drummer Dougie Vipond on the song his late mum loved the best – “She always used to say we should have been number one all over the world with ‘When Will You (Make My Telephone Ring)’ – and keyboard player / songwriter Jim Prime on ‘Queen of the New Year’s bluegrass roots (“I wanted to write a southern train rhythm, so I grabbed a guitar and detuned the bottom string, and that’s the riff that I came up with”).

More recent recruits Gregor Philp (guitar / songwriting) and bass player Lewis Gordon variously muse on the thrill of The Hipsters , and all of the songs / albums that have followed, while also paying tribute to original members Ewen Vernal (bass) – who’s still a lively and well-loved presence in folk and traditional music circles – and guitarist Graeme Kelling, who died in 2004. He will be forever missed, but he’s never far from the silhouettes onstage, from our memories, and from the songs, even as the decades march on.

No-one is more surprised than Ricky Ross that they’re releasing a new compilation to mark 35 years of greatest hits; that a box-set of his band’s albums to date now numbers 14 separate discs. In the ‘80s, he couldn’t see beyond Raintown .  “All I ever wanted to do was to make that album,” he says of their calling card and politically-charged pop manifesto. “Everything else just got lost. I didn’t give singles, or what might happen after that, any thought.”

Not even thinking how good it would be.

It’s a lifetime, yet no time at all, since Deacon Blue first roared their gospel according to hope, work, dignity, and Scottish towns beset with rain. We’re still taking cover under their words. Everything and nothing’s changed. There’s still a thrill in pressing play. We still need their songs in our cities of love, in our hearts, in our homes, in these hurricane days.

Thirty-five years since their debut single, Dignity, and millions of record sales since, Deacon Blue are digging out all their old 45s - the Top 10s, the favourites, the sing-a-long rarities - and heading on tour, stopping off at Utilita Arena Newcastle on Sunday 17th September 2023.

The band have always thrived onstage, but they’ve never played gigs quite like this: they’ll perform two sets, with no support. The f irst half will be an intimate acoustic show , and then they’ll go electric for a raucous trip across their hits.

Vocalist and songwriter Ricky Ross is raring to go on this celebration of Deacon Blue’s brilliant and loyal fans, roaring the Caledonian gospel from the South Coast to the Uplands. He said:    “ We ’ve decided to play a Greatest Hits show with a difference,” he says. “Yes, we intend to play all (or nearly all) the old 45s, but we also want the first half of the evening to be an intimate acoustic performance, the band gathered round the piano with acoustic guitars and whatever Dougie decides to hit. We ’ll play some album tracks and reinterpret a few favourites from the back catalogue. We ’ll take a short break then come back and make a lot of noise. We hope you can be part of that noise.”

Ricky Ross, co-vocalist Lorraine McIntosh, Dougie Vipond (drums), Jim Prime (keyboards), Gregor Philp (guitar) and Lewis Gordon (bass) will breathe new life into well-loved songs like Dignity, Loaded, Wages Day, Real Gone Kid, I’ll Never Fall In Love Again, Your Swaying Arms, Twist & Shout, Your Town,  The Hipsters and City Of Love. And so many more.

Deacon Blue are a band hailing from Glasgow, Scotland who formed in 1985. Since their debut, the band have released eight studio albums and have become one of the most beloved cult acts to ever come from the Scottish indie scene.

Normally, if one was to hear about a band fronted by an ex-school teacher and named after a Steely Dan song, the understandable reactions would be to instinctively write off that band as utterly insufferable before one has ever heard any of their music. However, to write off Deacon Blue would be a grave error indeed, no matter what the circumstances of their formation might be. Said ex-school teacher is the band's singer and Dundee, Scotland native Ricky Ross, who put the band together after moving from to Glasgow to pursue a solo career in music. After his debut album “So Long Ago” failed to make the earth move, he put the band together in 1985, and by 1987 the band had released their debut album “Raintown” on Columbia Records.

The next seven years of the band's career were incredibly kind to them, with several hit singles on both the UK and Ireland's singles charts, along with four critically and commercially successful albums to their name. Their second effort, 1989's “When The World Knows Your Name” was especially huge, topping the album charts and sending five of its singles into the top 30 of the singles chart, including a top ten hit in the form of its lead single “Real Gone Kid”. The band capped off the campaign for that album by headlining “The Big Day”, a free concert at Glasgow Green where the band played to an estimated quarter of a million people.

The band were on top of the world, and gaining momentum at an astonishing rate until 1994, when the band's drummer Dougie Vipond left the band to pursue a career in television. The band split amicably soon afterwards, but would reform five years later for a reunion concert in 1999, and then release a new album in the form of the same year's “Walking Back Home”. The band remain active to this day, releasing hugely acclaimed albums to a devoted following of fans both old and new. For staying relevant and exciting thirty years after forming, Deacon Blue come highly recommended.

Live reviews

Glasgow Scotland natives Deacon Blue have been doing their stadium anthemic rock since 1985, having released six studio albums to date. They’ve had their music feature on soundtracks and a number over TV advertisements over the years. They achieved their first top ten single with “Real Gone Kid” in 1988 when it peaked at number 8 in the chart. They open this evening with “Real Gone Kid”, there is delay on the guitars as the lights go from dark to light, illuminating the stage. The famous octave piano sounds at the start, and then the hit hats come in, setting the pace for the rest of the song. After a “two, three, four”, bellowed by front man Ricky Ross, the bouncing of the audience begins, followed by the chorus of joining in with that distinctive falsetto “Oooo” hook that repeats in the opening of this song. There is a huge sing along when it comes to songs such as “Fergus Sings the Blues” and “Chocolate Girl”. Their cover of Burt Bacharach and David Song’s “I’ll Never Fall in Love Again” is a surprising but intimate moment between Ross, his left hand woman and wife Lorraine McIntosh and the audience.

When they launch into “Fergus Sings the Blues”, they sing the chorus and the whole audience join in singing at the top of their lungs. Singer, Ross takes a step back from the microphone before starting the song to just take in the amazing audience reaction. The set, rightly so turned into a mutual appreciation society between the audience and the band.

Last night of their tour and it more than excelled all expectations...starting with “I was right and you were wrong.” With a bit of the Raintown album thrown in. Alongside a couple of songs from “A new house” album. A few old favourites and a few mash ups thrown in for good measure. Playing over 2:20 minutes.... playing 26 songs in total ... “Dignity, twist and shout, and Fergus” at the end. Finishing with “Always on my mind.” Fab night, sang every song, left with a hoarse voice, but well worth it!!!

What a stonking good show this was. Ricky is very much an entertainer as well as a singeing songwriter and his wife Lorraine has a hell of a good voice.

I first saw D&B 2 years ago and was not sure if the live show would be any good or not because I have a few of there albums but would not have described my self as a dedicated fan. I was very wrong then and nothing has changed since I last saw them in 2014 and I will with out doubt look forward to seeing them in 2017 so long as they are touring, I will be there. 5*

Fantastic show from Deacon Blue on Sunday night. The venue was brimming with an excited crowd eager to see the band after decades away from our shores. all the classic songs were delivered with gusto and the crowd never failed to push the band higher.

Awesome night. Highlights were:

Real gone Kid - for the Aussies in the audience

Fergus Sings the Blues

Great show.

great concert with a mixture of old and new songs, however the experience was slightly tainted by the number of drunk people in the audience. It was so bad that Ricky Ross had to tell one woman to pipe down!! I blame the venue who must have wanted to make as much money as possible and paid little regard to the enjoyment of the majority of the audience.

The concert was a great experience, the band played loads of familiar songs as well as some of their newer ones, but all were brilliant. Great atmosphere, good audience participation and great value for money, would definitely go to see them again. Altogether a great night out.

Fab night with a band who just get better & better with time. These guys know how to put on a show. Wonderful atmosphere, a real celebration of life, love and friendship. I think the tour is sold out in many places but if you get the chance of tickets, grab it !

Outstanding concert at Glasgow Hydro on Saturday night. Great mix of old favourites and newer songs. Last saw them in London in the 1980s and the voices, sound, performance and connection with the crowd every bit as good as then. Keep gigging guys - please!!

Hadn't seen Deacon Blue in concert since 1999! Had an amazing time. New material was great and old classics like Dignity, Loaded, Wages Day and Real Gone Kid. Can't wait to see them again. Faultless performance by the band, a must see for any old or new fan.

Words cannot say how it went , Deacon blue are one of the best bands, that you could ever see. As every song is a treasure, and would tell all that you would be silly not go to see them. If I had the money I would go to all their gigs.
