Oakmont Bakery, 1 Sweet Street

oakmont bakery tour

One sweet street. That’s the street address of the one and only Oakmont bakery , and how fitting that address is. For those of you who may not know, Oakmont bakery has been a fixture in the Oakmont community for many decades. From donuts to pies to cookies to custom ordered wedding cakes and let’s not forget their signature cake the Oakmonter, Oakmont bakery offers sweets suitable for anyone’s taste buds.

oakmont bakery tour

Originally located in a much smaller space, Oakmont bakery has quickly grown into one of Pittsburgh’s most beloved bakeries and therefore required a much larger space. You can find Oakmont bakery located right across the Hulton bridge past Riverview high school, in its new location as of 2019. This bakery is quite literally the full package. They offer baked goods, sweets, and even have their café for breakfast and lunch. While each person has their favorite from Oakmont Bakery, one thing that customers go crazy for every year is the return of the paczkis.

Now, what exactly is a paczki (pronounced puhnch·kee) you ask? This special treat is kinda like an overfilled donut. Paczkis come in all sorts of fun flavors at Oakmont. They have your basic fruit-flavored fillings including apple, blueberry, cherry, peach, and our personal favorite, raspberry! Not a fruit person? Not a problem! Other paczkis are filled with cream and custard. Examples are cookies n’ cream, peanut butter cream, and classic custard paczkis. These traditionally Polish desserts are available from now until Easter so hurry up and place an order or stop by and pick some up ASAP. With Pittsburgh’s large Polish community, these babies go fast! Even the workers know how crazy customers go for paczki season. We spoke with Tucker Guido, a long time baker at Oakmont, and he said the following:

“This time of year is always crazy. With the holidays and now paczki season, it’s all hands on deck! From the bakers to fryers to the fillers, so much goes into one order. There are so many different flavors to choose from it’s almost impossible to not find one you like.”

oakmont bakery tour

All the hype about paczki season aside, when Easter arrives, that doesn’t mean the craze for Oakmont Bakery stops. As we mentioned before, there is a lengthy list of delicious treats perfect for any occasion! A cool feature of Oakmont Bakery is that several cake flavors come in the size of a cupcake, a dolce, and a full-sized cake. Say maybe your sister and mom like chocolate cake, you and your grandma like fruity cakes, and your dad likes carrot cake. You can order dolces of each to split for the perfect slice! Our favorites are the raspberry (same filling as the raspberry paczkis), oakmonter, and peanut butter fudge.

oakmont bakery tour

As we mentioned, they do take orders for custom wedding cakes, but what really makes a Pittsburgh wedding a Pittsburgh wedding? COOKIE TABLE! Oakmont has a HUGE assortment of cookies from the classics like sugar cookies and thumbprints to unique cookies like s’mores and macaroon chocolate dipped cookies! You can stop in and grab an assortment tray to make things easy or hand select the cookies you’d like to try.

oakmont bakery tour

If you want to elevate your cookie selection, they also have available mini pastries!!! These are truly the crème de la crème. Cannoli, cream puffs, mini cheesecakes, lady locks, and eclairs all made perfectly. Order a Mini Pastry Tray or Gourmet Dessert Tray to really impress your guests at any gathering. The Gourmet Dessert Tray even includes cupcakes and some items from their “chocolate-dipped section.” That’s right, the chocolate-dipped section! This section includes marshmallows, cashew clusters, Buckeyes, various truffles, AND MORE! The choices truly never end!

Speaking of choices, if you’re looking for a nice assortment of breakfast pastries, especially for a meeting or brunch, look no further than Oakmont Bakery’s pastry and donut choices. Baked cinnamon rolls, bearclaws, scones, assorted danishes, muffins, filled croissants, and just about any donut you can dream up can be ordered ahead or picked up on the go! This is the perfect way to satisfy all those different sweets cravings. Want something more savory? Check out their bagel selection! They even have an assorted savory bagels option to order. If you’d like to hand-select, you can choose from 25+ bagels, with some of the savory ones being onion, everything, garlic, pizza, hot pepper, and bacon and cheese. They also sell regular cream cheese tubs as well!

If breakfast isn’t your jam, you can still head to Oakmont Bakery for some lunchtime goodies. They sell appetizer breads like pepperoni rolls, dipping breads, baguettes, and even bread rings to make your own sandwich ring. If DIYing isn’t something in your arsenal of skills, you can purchase an already made sandwich ring or slider platter. There is a number to choose from based on bread. If you don’t need lunch for a group and just want to stop by to treat yourself, order from the cafe! Lunchtime options are soups, salads, and sandwiches. Personally, we’ve had the Veg Out and Jacked-Up Turkey and they are incredible! Add a biscotti and coffee for something sweet (PS: they have 6 different types of biscotti). Breakfast items can also be found at their cafe like a BYO breakfast sandwich on one of their delicious bagels.

We don’t know about you, but we’re starting to get hungry just talking about all of this. Hopefully, after reading you’ve decided that Oakmont Bakery is worth a stop no matter the time of day. Remember, if you’re planning a visit the address is 1 Sweet Street!

Your Season-by-Season Guide to Oakmont Bakery

October 6, 2018 by Madeline Quigley 2 Comments

“Every day is a holiday at Oakmont Bakery,” says owner Marc Serrao. “And if it’s not, we make it one.”

Pittsburgh’s favorite bakery is always celebrating something! Whether it’s the Royal Wedding with lemon and elderflower cake, the 4th of July with red, white, & blue bagels, or special “ Jack Cookies ” for the tragic finale of “This Is Us,” Oakmont knows how dessert can transform anything into a celebration.

With so much going on, it can be hard to stay on top of Oakmont’s release schedule for all of their favorite products (pączki, anyone?) Below we have listed a season-by-season guide for tackling Oakmont Bakery, so you’ll never miss Farkleberry Cookie season again!

I̶f̶  when you visit Oakmont Bakery this year, we want to see your treats! Tag all of your pictures with # goodfoodpgh  and @ goodfoodpgh .

Your Guide to Seasonal Releases at Oakmont Bakery:

New year’s pretzels.

When to get it:  Starting at the end of December and running through the new year, Oakmont Bakery offers their famous New Year Pretzels. These massive Danish-like pretzels are made with a sweet dough and topped with a variety of icings. Popular flavors include: plain, raisin, raspberry, cinnamon, and cherry nut.

Pączki Season

When to get it:  Oakmont fans wait all year to get their hands on these famous donuts!Pączki season at Oakmont Bakery runs from January 6 through Easter.  Traditionally, these Polish donuts are enjoyed before the start of the lenten season. Oakmont’s pączki flavors include: coconut, maple-bacon, apple, blueberry, cherry, prune, “Oakmont cream,” and more!

When to get it:  To celebrate Mardi Gras, Oakmont sells their colorful King Cakes. These tasty cakes are available in store and online for preorder leading up to the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday.

Irish Soda Bread

When to get it:  To celebrate St. Patrick’s Day (March 17), Oakmont offers various green treats, as well as loaves of traditional Irish bread. The bread’s rough, golden-brown crust encases a dense, yet tender interior that is loaded with raisins!

St. Joseph’s Day Zeppoles

When to get it:  On St. Joseph’s Day on March 19, Sicilians prepare an elaborate feast, known as La Festa di San Giuseppe, where Zeppoles are the signature item on the menu. To commemorate this holiday, Oakmont Bakery serves the traditional St. Joseph’s Day dessert, which is made with Choux pastry dough, filled with pastry cream, dusted with confectionery sugar, and topped with a cherry.

Paska Bread

When to get it:  For the six weeks leading up to Easter, Oakmont offers Paska Bread. Paska is a flavorful Easter bread enjoyed in various Eastern European countries. Paska is made with milk, butter, eggs, flour, sugar, cream, and is often filled with raisins. The white of the bread represents the Holy Spirit.

National Donut Day

When to get it:  Oakmont Bakery takes National Donut Day very seriously! On June 7, the stores offers all of your favorite varieties of this special treat. To commemorate the history of the doughboy donut  (dating back to World War I), the bakery donates a dollar from every dozen donuts sold to the Salvation Army on National Donut Day.

Oakmont Bakery Carnival

When to get it:  During the last weekend in July, Oakmont Bakery celebrates “Carnival Weekend” and offers a limited release of a few of their most-popular seasonal treats from throughout the year. Treats include: caramel apples, New Years Pretzels, pączki, and the beloved “Farkleberry Cookies.”

When to get it:  Check out these jawsome cupcakes! To celebrate Shark Week, Oakmont has offered special shark cupcakes for the past two years during Discovery Channel’s Shark Week.

Pumpkin Everything

When to get it:  There is no such thing as too much pumpkin! Oakmont Bakery officially celebrates the start of pumpkin season during the first weekend in October, but you can actually start getting pumpkin treats at the store starting after Labor Day. Just a few of the pumpkin-flavored treats you can expect include: biscotti, donuts, muffins, cakes, and special pumpkin pie cold brew coffee!

Holiday Farkleberry Cookies

When to get it:  The legendary Farkleberry Cookies at Oakmont Bakery are available throughout the month of December. These cookies were invented by KDKA in the early 1970s to raise money for the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh Free Care Fund. Since then, Oakmont Bakery has adopted the cookie, but continues to donate a portion of the sales to the Children’s Hospital. Support a good cause while enjoying these special holiday cookies which feature a soft, orange-flavored cookie combined with dried cranberries and white chocolate chips.

Other popular holiday treats available during December include: Yule Logs, Sweet Rolls, cookie trays, and Rum Torte.

That’s like picking your favorite child! But I never leave without a peanut butter and jelly donut, along with at least 2 full bags of goodies. Hey, you might get stuck in traffic and starve to death.

Oakmont Bakery has been sweetening our special occasions and daily lives for 31 years, but now this landmark is moving.

Click the video player above to get a sneak peek of the new facility!

"This has got to make you feel good when you look around and see all of this. Oh, it's a dream. It really is a dream come true," Oakmont Bakery owner Marc Serrao said.

Pittsburgh's Action News 4 was the first inside the new facility for a tour. The new location is at the end of the Hulton Bridge, just down the street from the current location.

The new 19,000 square feet space opened Tuesday. The new store is located at 1 Sweet Street in Oakmont.

There will be 80 seats inside and 80 seats outside, along with 100 additional parking spaces.

"We got some new equipment we put in that's state of the art equipment, helping everything move a lot smoother. It'll be way more efficient," general manager Tony Serrao said.

Marc Serrao began baking at 13 years old at the Penn Hills Donut Shack, and he never imagined he would be here now.

"I'm a big dreamer, and this exceeded my wildest imagination," Marc Serrao said.

The Serraos plan to make the switch into the new space the same day, so the pressure is on for PW Campbell Construction.

"Their plan here is to close down one day and open up the next day here to have no downtime because they have so many customers excited about their food and bakery items. So it's our job to make sure that works smoothly for them," Erin Campbell, vice president of marketing and strategic planning at PW Campbell, said.

Tony Serrao told Pittsburgh Action News 4 there will be new recipes but could not share what they are until construction is done.

Oakmont Bakery serves about 1,000 people each day. During the holidays, that number triples, and that is why it needs the new building.

Where to Find Pączki in Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh is a Paczki Paradise

Pączki [puhnch · kee] n. “a traditional Polish doughnut, filled with jam or another sweet filling and covered with powdered sugar or icing.”

The story goes that the people of Poland would consume all their sweets, butters and fruits in preparation for Lent to begin, and so began Pączki!

These delicious, deep-fried delicacies are a wonderfully over-filled pastry similar to a donut but with denser dough to hold the amount of delicious filling inside. And, in my humble opinion, you really can’t go wrong with any of the filling options! Pittsburgh’s Polish heritage makes our city a Pączki paradise.

Oakmont Bakery

We happily went behind the pastry cases at Oakmont Bakery (AKA heaven on earth) for a firsthand view on how pączki are made. Oakmont Bakery sells approximately 10,000 pączki (yeah we said THOUSAND) each weekend leading up to Lent, and 20,000 the weekend before Fat Tuesday, so we figured getting the tasty details straight from the source is exactly what you want.

The Pączki Process

Make the dough. Simple enough, right?

Portion out the dough into perfect little pączki pillows.

Let the pączki pillows rise in the steam box for approximately one hour. (Editor’s Note: Must have patience to make pączki – got it!)

The pączki get deep-fried on each side where they become a lovely golden-brown color that only dreams are made of.

Time for a bath in the silky sweet glaze! (Is your mouth watering yet? 🤤)

FILL. Oakmont Bakery offers 16 different fillings from fruit jams to creams, custards and even maple bacon. Their most popular flavor? Pittsburgh Cream, of course!

Pick a flavor or fill a box with one of each and ENJOY!

New for 2024

What could make paczki even better? How about an exclusive collab with Penn Brewery , one of the most celebrated craft breweries in the city? Their brand new Paczki Pittsburgh Cream Ale, which takes fresh vanilla buttercream pączki direct from Oakmont Bakery and thrown into the kettle to backsweeten this cream ale made with German hops, roasted honey malts, flaked corn and oats. While it may seem like a odd mix, the pączki give the cream ale and smooth mouthfeel and creamy character making this one of the most unique (and delicious) beers in the Burgh.

Grab a draft or a four pack while you visit the bakery, or look for it for sale at Penn Brewery as well. Hurry, this limited supply is only available for a short time.

We have one last tasty surprise. Our friends at Oakmont Bakery let us in on a sweet (not so) secret! 🤫 The Lenten season isn’t the only time they offer pączki.

Every summer for just one weekend in July, during the Oakmont Summer Street Sale, they bring back their best-selling holiday items including New Years Pretzels, Frakleberry Cookies, and you guessed it – PĄCZKI! Did someone say Christmas in July?

2024 Summer Pączki Dates: TBD

“Not the same !” Review of Oakmont Bakery

Mini cakes

The last 2 times I went to the bakery, it was for a mini cake, which I always bought when in the area, among other items. They were my favorite. I ended up throwing both away! They were different the last 2 times. I asked for the almond white cakes. The first was a yellow cake and the most recent was something different. Not worth the calories! I’m assuming they got a new recipe? New pastry chef? Even one of their cream filled donuts had barely any cream. It really is a beautiful bakery with beautiful pastries, etc but I’ll never go again. Totally different now!

No visit to Pittsburgh to see family would be complete without a trip to Oakmont Bakery! We always say it is an experience! We enjoy ordering our usual desserts, but always have to check out the entire bakery before we pull a # to be waited on. Parking is still challenging, but it's worth it. We went this time on a weekday afternoon so it wasn't as busy as a weekend or holiday.

Unreal cake and cookie selection! It’s a popular bakery and you’ll need to take a ticket when you get inside before you order. You can pick your own cookies from the counters or pick up a pre-made ready to go assortment. You really can’t go wrong here. Everything is scrumptious! Thumbprints are one of my favorites!

Oakmont is a gorgeous bakery with amazing products. This is one of those places that can be relied upon to deliver quality time after time. We use Oakmont for birthdays and family events. Huge variety and custom options are available.

As for bakeries go this has to be the largest selection of baked goods around. Place is very clean and organized. Donuts left a lot to be desired, very heavy and greasy tasting. I had long cream filled donut topped with cherries. The cherries and cream were very good but the cake part gave me a very queasy feeling and almost greasy after taste that just would not go away. It was almost as bad as Krispy Kreme's. There are tons of cookies and other bakery items there so I'm sure you can find whatever your sweet tooth desires. My wife said the cherry danish were very good. All in all it's a neat place to go for bakery sensory overload. If you're i the Oakmont area it's worth stopping by.

"Won't you guide us to the Super Bowl?" Oakmont Bakery reveals specialty Mason Rudolph cupcakes

By Patrick Damp

January 10, 2024 / 11:16 AM EST / CBS Pittsburgh

OAKMONT, Pa. (KDKA) - While we all are hoping for the sweet taste of victory this Sunday when the Steelers take on the Bills in one of the AFC Wild Card matchups, Oakmont Bakery isn't waiting that long.

The iconic Pittsburgh-area bakery is once again putting its own unique stamp on Steelers fandom with one-of-a-kind Rudolph Cupcakes.

Oakmont Bakery made the sweet treat with yellow vanilla batter baked with chocolate chips, fudge filling, gold vanilla buttercream icing, dipped in chocolate ganache, and topped with pretzels and a fireball nose.

mason-rudolph-cupcakes.png

This isn't the first time Oakmont Bakery has been part of the Steelers fandom.

In 2022, when TJ Watt set the sack record, the bakery surprised him and his fiancee with a specialty cake.

Since taking over the starting job after an injury to Kenny Pickett earlier this year, Rudolph has not disappointed in three starts.

During that time he's thrown for three touchdowns, no interceptions, 719 yards, and had a passer rating of 112 or higher in those three games.

The Steelers offense also put up back-to-back 30-plus point performances against Cincinnati and Seattle.

He'll continue to assume the Steelers' starting job as they head to Buffalo on Sunday.

Yes, the Christmas season may be behind us now, but just like Oakmont Bakery said in its reveal of the cupcakes, "Rudolph, won't you guide us to a Super Bowl?"

The Steelers and Bills will kickoff on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Highmark Stadium on Orchard Park, New York, and you can catch the game right here on KDKA!
