LOOKING FOR THE BEST THINGS TO DO IN JINDABYNE, NSW?

Jindabyne is a small country town in the Snowy Monaro region of New South Wales. Its most famous attraction is the lake it sits at the edges of, which is the most well-known of the 16 waterbodies created for the world-famous landmark engineering project, the Snowy Mountains Scheme.

I visited it for several days as part of my three-month trip through the NSW and the ACT and discovered plenty of epic things to do in Jindabyne and its surrounds, because lakeside picnic s and watersports aren’t the only things this picturesque place has to offer, as it’s also the gateway to Australia’s tallest mountains and all of the state’s incredible ski resorts , providing plenty of fun for everyone, especially those who love outdoor adventures.

👉 My top 3 picks for what to do in Jindabyne:

  • Kayak or go boating on Lake Jindabyne .
  • Go skiing or snowboarding at one of the ski resorts .
  • Enjoy wild adventures in Kosciuszko National Park .

Best Things To Do In Jindabyne Year-Round.

1. enjoy the town’s iconic namesake lake. lake jindabyne..

Lake Jindabyne is the number one thing people associate with this town. It’s not only a predominant feature of its landscape, but it also has an intriguing backstory as it’s not a naturally occurring lake . What’s also fascinating to know is the township isn’t even the original Jindabyne.

That is all because of the Snowy Mountains Scheme, which consists of 16 interconnected lakes to provide a sustainable water source for those living in the Murrumbidgee and Murray River basins and renewable hydroelectricity to much of southeast New South Wales. For some of those basins to exist, a few towns had to be relocated to higher ground, Jindabyne being one of them.

While old Jindabyne is now under many gigatonnes of water, the current Jindabyne now sits lakeside to the waterbody that flooded its predecessor. But that also means the town has plenty of picturesque views overlooking the lake and even more easily accessible walks along its shoreline.

It’s also a mecca for those who love doing all sorts of watersports, including but not limited to kayaking, boating, stand-up paddleboarding, hydro foiling and water biking , making this simultaneously one of the most beautiful, exciting and diverse attractions in Jindabyne.

Visiting the lake is one of the best things to do in Jindabyne.

LOVE TRAVELLING? BUT HATE PACKING?

Want a FREE comprehensive packing list to streamline preparations for your next adventure? I’ve got you covered!

2. Get A Brief Overview Of The Snowy Mountains Scheme. Snowy Visitor Centre.

If you’re interested in learning more about the Snowy Mountains Schem e, the Snow Visitor Centre in the middle of town has a small section in addition to the information desk and gift shop that gives a brief overview of what the lengthy 25-year construction process entailed.

The massive project also gets credited for forging Australia’s identity as a multicultural nation , as many of the 100,000 people came from wartorn countries to help with the monumental build, which also gets touched on at the display.

On a completely unrelated topic, the Snowy Visitor Centre is also home to the town’s cinema, so if you’re itching to see a movie during your travels, this is where you can come to catch the latest flick.

👉 If you’re interested in learning more about the Snowy Mountain Scheme, the Snowy Hydro Discovery Centre in Cooma goes into much more detail.

3. Try Some Local Beer. (Kosciuszko Pale Ale.) Kosciuszko Brewing Company/Banjo Paterson Pub.

One of the best things to do in Jindabyne is try the local brew. Not only does the town manufacture a beer in honour of Australia’s tallest mountain called the Kosciuszko Pale Ale , but it’s also fittingly crafted in the nation’s highest brewery .

So while it is available in many of the area’s local bars and liquor stores, there’s no better place to try its warm and comforting malt and hop flavours than at the beautiful Banjo Paterson Pub where they make it.

A Kosciuszko Pale Ale drink with a pool table in the background of the Banjo Paterson Pub.

4. See The First Guy To Summit Mt Kosciuszko. Sir Paul Edmund Strzelecki Monument, Banjo Paterson Park.

Continuing with the Kosciuszko theme, just across the road from Australia’s highest brewery that makes the beer named after Australia’s tallest peak is a statue dedicated to the guy who first summited the snow-capped mountain.

Sir Paul Edmund Strzelecki was a Polish explorer and geologist who became the first white man to reach the 2228m mountain in 1840 during an expedition through the Snowy Mountains with James Macarthur, James Riley and two Aboriginal guides: Charlie Tarra and Jackey . He named it after Tadeusz Kosciusko , a national hero of Poland and the American Revolutionary War.

The Banjo Paterson Park has a large-scale full-body statue of the pioneering explorer worth visiting. But it’s also a beautiful, easily accessible place to get to the lake and enjoy a lovely walk, cycle or picnic by the shoreline.

5. See The Lake From The Local Lookout. Snowy Hydro Surge Tank Lookout.

While Jindabyne has lovely lakeside pathways and beautiful viewpoints along the roads in and out of town, there is one formal lookout you can drop by and take in the picturesque scenery without going for a walk or worrying about all the traffic flying past.

The Snowy Hydro Surge Tank Lookout is on the outskirts of town on the Kosciuszko Road to the national park’s Perisher Valley and Charlottes Pass. It is in an awkward spot next to a bend in the road and is essentially only accessible from one direction (inbound towards Jindabyne). The parking area is also pretty rough and unmaintained (at least it was when I was there). But, it is easy to find as a large concrete tower earmarks its location, and the viewpoint has beautiful views overlooking the famous lake.

6. Stop By The Sphere. Snowy River Sphere.

The Snowy River Sphere is a famous art sculpture at the side of the road as you drive the 63km distance between Cooma and Jindabyne. It earmarks that you’ve reached the Snowys and is a great place to stop and take a fun photo to showcase you’re now in alpine territory.

7. Go For A Scenic Flight Over Australia’s Tallest Mountains. Scenic Helicopter Flights.

One of the ultimate things to do in Jindabyne is take a scenic helicopter flight and see the country’s tallest mountain, Mt Kosciuszko, in all its wild and untamed beauty from above.

While companies operate year-round, providing unforgettable trips over the vast Australian Alps, there is something profoundly magical about doing so during winter , when there is nothing but pristine snow-capped mountains as far as the eye can see that make a mid-flight the quintessential way to see the breathtaking landscape.

👉 While Mt Kosciuszko is the most popular, there are other flights that go over Lake Jindabyne and the Snowy Mountain Scheme locations too.

Best Things To Do In Jindabyne In Summer.

Kosciuszko national park. – thredbo-perisher section, 8. get lost hiking in the australian alps..

One of the best things to do in Jindabyne during summer is to hit the trails. With the town on the doorstep of Kosciuszko National Park , there is so much awe-inspiring beauty to discover, and there’s no better way to appreciate it all than on foot.

The most popular trail is, undoubtedly, the 18km return summit track to Mt Kosciuszko . For people to say they climbed Australia’s tallest mountain makes it a bucket list item for many people visiting the national park. And I can tell you from my own experience that the view from the top is utterly magnificent, so it’s well worth the hike.

If that’s too long, there are also many more breathtaking shorter alpine and sub-alpine trails to discover, such as the Mt Stilwell and Porcupine Rocks walks. (Even if you don’t have time or cannot physically attempt these tracks, the lookout at the end of Kosciuszko Road has equally majestic views of the continent’s highest peaks and is well worth the drive to Charlottes Pass for that alone.)

But if you’re the more adventurous hiker, there is no shortage of other long and even multiday trails you can embark on, and all are spectacular. Intrepid walkers with sat-nav equipment can even go off-trail and discover places the tracks don’t go to. It is also one of the few places in Australia where you can pitch a tent wherever you want (sans a few restrictions) and enjoy an overnight expedition! And with such an expansive pristine wilderness to explore, it’s no wonder it’s regarded as a trekker’s wonderland through and through.

Me at the summit of Mt Kosciuszko. This is one of the best things to do in Jindabyne's vicinity.

9. Go On A Biking Adventure. Kosciuszko National Park.

For those who like to get their fill of nature on two wheels, Kosciuszko National Park has plenty of scenic bike trails to explore. While you can’t go on all the ones where you can walk, there are wilderness cycling trails for everyone.

Head out for a few hours and enjoy the fresh air and picturesque landscapes on a casual cycle, or embark on a full-day or overnight adventure far away from civilisation. With so much wide open space and barely another soul around for miles, this is a fantastic way to switch off and reconnect with nature.

10. Have Some Family Fun. Lake Crackenback.

As the name suggests, Lake Crackenback Resort and Spa is an upscale nature resort located on the banks of a scenic lake. It’s one of the most beautiful and unique accommodation options in Jindabyne’s vicinity, with rustic chalets overlooking the mountains or overwater apartments to choose between.

What’s also great about it is the many facilities and attractions it offers aren’t just for the people staying there, but for day use visitors too, such as the 9-hole golf course , walking and biking trails, tennis courts, archery boards and canoes , which are perfect for people of all ages, making it one of the best places to visit in Jindabyne for families and group get-togethers.

11. Visit Jindabyne’s Other Lake. Lake Eucumbene.

As Jindabyne sits on the shores of Jindabyne Lake, it’s understandably, the most popular watery playground in town. But it’s not the only one nearby.

Lake Eucumbene , halfway to Cooma , is not only one of the Snowy Mountains Scheme’s 16 interconnected lakes , but its ability to hold 4,798,000,000 cubic m of water at maximum capacity also makes it, by far, the biggest.

That also equates to significantly more real estate to discover by boat or kayak. There are also some picnic areas, a swimming area, biking trails and a lookout with views across the dam wall, making Jindabyne’s other lake a great place to spend a day outside.

Kosciuszko national park., 12. hit the snow thredbo, perisher, charlottes pass & more..

No mid-year trip to Jindabyne is complete without heading up the slopes and playing in the snow. After all, it is the gateway to most of New South Wales ski resorts and the primary reason people pass through this picturesque lakeside town.

And you’re spoilt for choice too. Thredbo and Perisher are the headliner villages most people are familiar with. But there are also smaller ones, such as Charlotte’s Pass, Smiggin Holes and Blue Cow , so there is absolutely no shortage of scenic ski lifts to take you up the mountain and fantastic groomed trails to take you back down for skiers and snowboarders of every skill level.

Me ringing the Community Bell at Thredbo which earmarks the highest elevated point in Australia.

14. Go Backcountry Snowshoeing.

For those who prefer exploring the snowy alpine wilderness away from the crowds and touristy runs, you can always embark on a backcountry snowshoeing adventure . For those unaware, it’s like hiking, but with special exoskeletal equipment attached to your shoes that increase traction and surface area so you are less likely to slip over or sink while walking on the snow.

It’s a tremendously beautiful and unforgettable way to experience the pristine landscapes of the Australian Alps that you can either do as part of a guided tour from one of the ski resorts or hire a pair of snowshoes from many stores in town and on the slopes and go your own way . (Navigation experience required for the latter.)

14. Learn How To Save A Life.

If you are interested in snow safety for exploring the mountains beyond the ski resort, there’s just the thing at Thredbo. They recently launched an exciting new exercise to help you brush up on your wilderness survival skills.

The Avalanche Training Centre aims to teach people about avalanche safety and dive deep into what to do if one occurs and the best way to locate others who may have become buried in the snow, which are fundamental things to know should the worst befall you and your group while you’re out there.

Those embarking on one of Thredbo’s backcountry adventures will have this incorporated as part of their expedition , but it’s not exclusive to them. Anyone not participating in them can still do the training, which may help them save lives. And best of all, it’s completely free.

Visiting Jindabyne: Frequently Asked Questions.

Where is jindabyne.

Jindabyne is a small but beautiful lakeside town located at the base of the Kosciuszko National Park in the Snowy Monaro Region of New South Wales.

For more context, it also lies south-southwest of the Australian capital, Canberra and is about halfway between the ACT’s southernmost border and Victoria.

How Far Is It From Jindabyne To Thredbo?

At 35km away, Thredbo Village is the closest ski resort to Jindabyne. The drive takes about half an hour during good daytime conditions when the road is dry.

However, although it is generally well maintained because this area receives seasonal snowfall, driving time takes much longer as more care is needed to traverse the slippery roadway safely.

Part of that also means chains are legally required to be fitted to your vehicle’s wheels when snow or sleet is on the bitumen. While on, you are only permitted to drive at speeds of 30km/h, thus increasing the time it takes to arrive there.

And if you’re driving at night, it’s advisable to go even slower, because especially as a wilderness area, there are lots of animals about.

How Far Is Jindabyne From Canberra?

At 178 km away, Jindabyne is just over a two-hour drive from the gorgeous Australian capital city of Canberra . Head out of the CBD and south along the Monaro Highway to the Capital Of The Snowy’s, Cooma , where you’ll then go west south-west for the final stretch to Jindabyne along Kosciuszko Road.

How Far Is Jindabyne From Sydney?

Jindabyne is a considerably further distance from the NSW state capital Sydney than Canberra at 459 km long .

There are two main ways to go, but the shortest follows the South Western Motorway(M5) and Hume Highway(M31) from Sydney to Canberra. From there, head along the same route from Canberra to reach Jindabyne. The drive takes abou t 5 hours to commute non-stop.

When Is The Best Time To Visit Jindabyne?

If you love traditional winter sports, such as skiing, snowboarding, tabogganing and backcountry snowshoeing , June to August is prime visiting time as that is when there is excellent snow coverage. But if you love summer activities like hiking, biking and swimming, October to April is the best time to head there.

September and May are typically the transitionary months , so depending on that year’s weather cycle, you can sometimes toe the line and enjoy a little bit of both .

Conclusion: Best Things To Do In Jindabyne, NSW.

With it being so close to two lakes, several ski resorts and the biggest and only alpine national park in New South Wales, there is no shortage of fantastic things to do in Jindabyne and nearby.

12 Fun things to do in Jindabyne for the perfect Snowy Mountains trip

12 Fun things to do in Jindabyne for the perfect Snowy Mountains trip

We originally planned a five day trip to Jindabyne which ended up turning in to ten when we realised just how many amazing things there are to do in the area. The lake itself is absolutely beautiful and it’s a gorgeous setting to base yourself in for a Snowys adventure.

If you’re looking for an outdoor adventure, you’ll be spoilt for choice with incredible hiking trails, wild swimming spots, and if you’re visiting in summer, the wildflowers are the best we’ve seen anywhere in NSW.

For those looking to relax there are great picnic spots and wildlife watching opportunities, or simply sit sipping gin in the local distillery’s garden. Whatever you’re looking for, you’ll find it in or close to JIndabyne.

12 Best things to do in Jindabyne

A note on seasons.

Although lots of the things to do in Jindabyne are accessible year round, a few things will not be. When it comes to the hiking trails, we linked individual guides on each one which let you know what months of the year it is accessible and if you need any special gear for the colder months.

Brumby and roo in the Snowy Mountains

1. Take a dip in Lake Jindabyne

If you want an invigorating start to the day you can’t go past a dip in Lake Jindabyne. It’s pretty bracing even in the height of summer but you get used to it pretty quickly.

You can bring a lilo if you love the idea of getting out on the water but don’t want to go all in.

Things to do in Jindabyne - Take a dip in the lake

There are plenty of secluded spots around the lake where you can enjoy a relaxing swim, one of the prettiest being Rushes Bay.

You could spend the whole day at the lake by combing a dip, with a picnic and a stroll along the foreshore walkway (the total walk is 7km return if you want to do it all). The walk is almost entirely flat and full of birdlife.

We’ve done it a few times and actually like it best at sunset when the whole area is bathed in golden light.

The walk round Lake Jindabyne - Things to do in Jindabyne

2. Go gin tasting at the Wildbrumby Distillery

A visit to the award winning Wildbrumby Distillery is a must when visiting Jindabyne. We opted to try some gins - which were excellent - but if that’s not your thing you can also taste a variety of schnapps too.

The Wild Bumby Distillery - Things to do in Jindabyne

The setting is gorgeous and if you want to extend your visit you can have lunch outside on the terrace, or inside the atmospheric restaurant if the weather isn’t cooperating.

We opted for coffee and cake which were great, and similar pricing to the much more basic cafes around Thredbo. You can then walk it all off in the sculpture garden afterwards.

Wild Brumby Distillery

Note that the cafe and distillery are closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

3. Hike up Australia’s highest mountain

Most people visiting the Snowys in the warmer months set their sights on getting to the top of Australia’s highest mountain.

There are quite a few ways you can do it, depending on how far you want to walk. Our preferred option is the spectacular 24.7km Main Range Circuit (3km less if you skip the Blue Lakes side trail) which is one of the best walks we’ve done in Australia and has all the wow factor.

Climbing to the top of Mt Kosciuzsko - Things to do in Jindabyne

If you want a shorter and easier option you can use the Thredbo chairlift to get you part way up and then walk on the mainly paved trail up to the summit of Kosi which is around 13km return.

You can also walk from Thredbo village using the Merritts Nature Track and then join up with the trail that goes from the top of the chairlift - however if you do this you will be walking around 17km and not so far off the Main Range Circuit distance which is the most beautiful route.

The walk up Mount Kosciuzsko - Things to do in Jindabyne

Even if the distance from the top of the chairlift sounds further than you’re used to, don’t be put off. I know people who have young kids and are not hikers, and they managed this walk ok.

Just allow time for lots of breaks to admire the views!

4. Look out for wild brumbies

Whilst it’s true that brumbies are not native to the Snowys and therefore technically a pest, everyone we met (us included) wanted to see them, and when you do spot them, there are always a line of cars stopped to take photos!

Wild Brumbies in Kosciuzsko National Park - Things to do in Jindabye

You’ll tend to see them in herds and watching them gallop across the alpine landscape is a spectacular sight.

The best spot for viewing them is quite a distance from Jindabyne (near Yarrangobilly Caves) but a reliable place fairly close to Jindabyne is at the start of the Cascades walking track near Dead Horse Gap .

They tend to be in the valleys near the start of the trail, we saw them just two minutes in so you don’t need to walk the whole track (which is a full day’s hike). We met many people who saw them here and in the next valley slightly further along the path too.

5. Have a picnic at Thredbo River

If you’re looking for a quiet spot to have a picnic, the Thredbo River picnic area is a great choice. It’s really peaceful and tranquil, beside the water, and there are picnic tables if you don’t have a rug with you. There are also free BBQs if you want to cook up a storm.

If you decide to opt for an evening picnic you might share the space with the resident wallabies! There were loads when we stopped by in the evening. If you’re really lucky you might even spot a platypus although we tried and failed.

Picnic at Thredbo River

One thing to note is that although this picnic area is before the ticket booths for the national park it does technically come under the fee zone for Kosciuszko National Park and therefore it’s only worth visiting when you have already got a park ticket, or it’s one very expensive picnic spot!

6. Take a stroll around Lake Crackenback

Whilst there is a private resort at Lake Crackenback anyone can come and take a stroll around the lake. It’s a lovely spot to visit when you fancy a relaxing walk, rather than one of the hilly hikes this area is famous for. It’s a really pretty lake and the the well maintained pathway is flat and easy.

Walking around Lake Crackenback

If you come in the late afternoon you might spot kangaroos, we saw quite a few here, as well as some giant wombat holes, although not the wombats themselves! We’ve even seen pictures of emus here too, which would be a real treat. There is also a cafe on site which we didn’t try but were told was good.

7. Visit the historic Bullocks Hut

The Snowy Mountains have lots of historic huts scattered throughout the region and Bullocks Hut is probably the easiest of the lot to visit. Built in 1934 as a fishing lodge it now stands empty except when it is being used for weddings!

Kangaroo near Bullocks Hut - Things to do in Jindabyne

It has a lovely setting on the Thredbo River and was also a favourite spot for the local kangaroos when we visited. Although you can’t go inside the hut, it’s a nice piece of Snowys history and a good, quiet spot to sit and relax beside the river.

Bullocks Hut - Things to do in Jindabyne

It’s just a 500m walk from the car park, and if you park at the Bullocks Flat Skitube it doesn’t require paying the park entrance fee. We walked the easy 6km Bullocks Track after visiting the hut which was a great circuit walk. We visited on a cool misty day and the scenery reminded us of Tasmania! You can also the cycle the track if you have a bike with you.

8. Go for a scramble on Porcupine Rocks

Porcupine Rocks is a quiet track to a series of rock formations that offer incredible views. If you love scrambling you’ll be in for a treat because there are so many different sets of boulders to climb on.

The most photogenic time to be up there is at sunrise, which is when a local recommended we visit.

Scramble up Procupine Rocks - Things to do near Jindabyne

We have to admit that on this trip we weren’t really feeling up for very early starts so we headed up there for sunset instead. You can watch the sunset from first area of boulders you come to and if you don’t want an early alarm call, we’d definitely recommend it.

The walk to get up to the rocks is 5.6km return and easy. You do have to walk uphill at points but it’s very gradual and there is a lot of flat track inbetween climbs. Although it’s great scrambling, it’s not necessary to still get those fantastic views.

Watching sunset at procupine rocks in Jindabyne

You can read our full Porcupine Rocks guide for more on the track.

9. Catch a sunset from Mount Stilwell

We watched the sunset as many nights as we could on our trip and Mount Stilwell was definitely our favourite. It’s a 2.8km walk to reach the top of the mountain and although it is uphill, it’s not overly steep and the path is in great condition.

The views from the summit are panoramic and just incredible at sunset. We were lucky enough to get the whole experience to ourselves (it’s another one of those lesser known spots) and it’s something we’ll always remember.

6D2A9531.jpg

If you don’t want to do the whole walk, you could just go as far as the lookout which is just 900m each way. You’ll still get a gorgeous mountain panorama, including Mount Kosciuszko, and it doesn’t take long to walk up.

Just watch out for the weather, we walked on a day with a perfect forecast, but this being the mountains meant that it quickly changed and a storm rolled in. It was incredibly atmospheric though, and we were very glad we’d brought layers and rain coats!

Sunset at Mt Stillwell

You can read our full guide to the Mount Stilwell Track here .

10. Ride the Thredbo chairlift

Most people visiting Thredbo will ride the chairlift at some point, whether it’s to go hiking, mountain biking or just to check out the view. The chairlift whizzes you up 560 vertical metres in 15 minutes and you can ride it as many times as you want in a day for $45.

You can walk to the summit of Mount Kosciuszko from here, or just as far as the lookout if you only want a short walk, which is just under 4km return.

Rise the Thredbo Chairlift

You can also grab a bite at the Eagle’s Nest which is the highest restaurant in Australia. To be honest though, when I saw the outside it looked a bit shabby and not what I was expecting so we didn’t go in.

The views would be fantastic though, and we’d love to know how it is if you do decide to eat there!

Taking the chairlift in Thredbo

11. Sip on the local beer at Jindabyne Brewing

Jindabyne Brewing is a popular spot for locals to get together and have a drink so it can get very busy, but if you manage to snag a table it’s a great spot for a beer.

If you’re really lucky there are a couple of tables outside with a good lake view.

Things to do in Jindabyne - The Brewery

I’m a sucker for a Golden Ale, but there are plenty of others you can try that have been brewed on site. Like most breweries, you can try before you buy and then sip on a schooner or even a pint. It’s perfect after a long day exploring! :)

We recommend going to “Jindabyne Brewing” on Nettin Crescent as there are a couple of breweries in Jindabyne with similar names.

12. Walk the cute swing bridge over the Snowy River

As soon as I saw the swing bridge over the stunning blue water of the Snowy River, I knew I had to do the Illawong Walk. It’s a beautiful and easy stroll through some fantastic mountain scenery to reach the bridge and it’s even more picturesque in real life than it looks in photos.

It’s one of those jangly bridges that sways as you walk and can only take one person at a time.

The swing bridge in the Snowy Mountains

The views are gorgeous and on a sunny day the water was the most incredible blue (which doesn’t really show up in the photos!). It’s another place you can do a bit of wild swimming if you don’t mind the icy water temperature!

The 5.2km return walk to the bridge also passes another of the Snowys historic huts, although this one looks much more modern than Bullocks Hut, with solar panels on the roof!

The suspension bridge in the Snowy Mountains

You can read our full trail guide to the Illawong Walk here .

Bonus if you’re visiting in December!

Check out the best christmas lights in nsw.

We were driving back to our accommodation one evening when we suddenly saw the biggest display of Christmas lights that we’ve ever seen in our lives! Of course we had to pull over for a closer look and then the owner appeared and said you can actually look around the whole display.

It turns out this festive extravaganza is famous in these parts, and people come from far and wide to stroll through the garden full of thousands of lights. There’s everything from giant kangaroos to full size reindeer, complete with sleigh!

The Christmas lights in Jindabyne

If you’re in need of some Christmas cheer I guarantee this will do the trick. It’s the most Christmassy we’ve ever felt in Australia!

The owner has been doing it for decades and the whole thing takes 10 weeks to put up. There’s a donation box before you enter and all funds raise go to the local children’s centre.

Getting to Jindabyne

Jindabyne is 460km and just over a five hour drive from Sydney. It’s 180km and a two hour drive from Canberra.

The Mount Kosciuszko National Park Fee

Lots of the activities around Jindabyne fall within the park fee zone and even if you have an NSW parks pass, you still need to pay. The fee is $17 per day, and if you buy 4 days you get 1 free. You can buy an annual pass for just this park alone for $190.

The pass lasts for 24 hours, so if you time it right you can go into the park for 2 days on a 1 day pass.

Kosciuszko Walk Weekend

Starting from Australia’s highest village Charlotte Pass; we cross the Snowy River and walk on to experience the power and beauty of the ancient Blue Lake. Hewn out of granite by colliding rivers of ice, this is Kosciuszko National Park’s deepest glacial lake. The final 800m of trail ascends steadily on a paved trail, albeit the last few hundred metres to Charlotte Pass is sometimes known as heartbreak hill, but it’s worth it.

Ride the chairlift from Thredbo Village (1365 metres) to Eagles Nest (1945metres), follow a grated path that crosses the headwaters of the Snowy River and enjoy the vista of Lake Cootapatamba, Australia's highest lake. The journey continues with the summiting of Mt Kosciuszko, Australia’s highest peak, which affords sweeping views over the Main Range and beyond to Victorian alpine terrain.

On return, descend to glacial Lake Cootapatamba via South Kosciuszko Ridge and climb to the high ground of the Ramshead where stacks of ancient granite boulders stand precariously perched.before a taking leisurely ride on the chairlift back to Thredbo Village .

A Mid Summers Day Trip

Jindabyne, Kosciuszko National Park and Perisher Valley/Charlotte Pass

Cycle along the lake’s edge or hire a runabout or catamaran for time on the water. Take a scenic or fishing boat charter, or take to the air in a scenic flight. Visit the monument to Sir Paul Edmund Strzelecki and learn why he was significant to the region. Check out the Jindabyne Dam wall and take a mountain bike ride from there to Tyrollean Village. Go fishing in the lake or in one of the many surrounding streams, and catch Rainbow or Brown Trout and the occasional Brook or Atlantic Salmon. Fishing licences are required in NSW, and short stay licences are available from a number of outlets including many service stations.

Leave Jindabyne via the Kosciusko Road and venture into Kosciusko National Park. Passes are sold at the gate or at the Snowy Mountains Visitors Centre in Jindabyne. Stop at Waste Point lookout for great views of Lake Jindabyne. A little further on, the Kosciuszko Education Centre (open seasonally) gives some understanding of the features, flora and fauna of the mountains, including the illusive pygmy possum and corroboree frog. There are lovely mountain forest walks commencing from here.

Enter the Alpine Region, where the trees thin and become restricted to the warmer locations along ridge lines towards Perisher Valley. This ski village is a quiet haven for walkers in Summer. A half-day walk to the Porcupine Rocks is a must.

Drive on to Charlotte Pass, Australia’s highest ski village (along the way stop at Alpine Eyre Kiosk for a snack or lunch). Witness magnificent views of Australia’s Alpine Zone. On the horizon, across the “Main Range”, is Mount Kosciusko. A return walk to the top of Kosciusko is a full day’s trek. Just below this, witness the first flows of the iconic Snowy River.

A Skier's Weekender

Rise bright and early ready to hit the slopes! But first, fuel up for a big day with breakfast from Birchwood Jindabyne. The menu changes regularly, but if it’s available, try the amazing pancakes. Next, collect your gear from one of the many rental providers in town (don’t forget the chains!) and head off to your mountain of choice.

First timers should head off to a lesson first thing to get some groundwork skills. Kids might want to try out ski school, it doesn’t take them long to be overtaking the adults in skill and confidence!

Break for lunch and maybe a hot chocolate (or Beer!) Kids in ski school get their own lunch catered for. The afternoon can then be spent trying out your new found skills, or observing the mountain from the comfortable warmth of a lounge, café or bar.

If the previous days lessons have not worn you out, then rinse and repeat! Otherwise, treat yourself to a sleep in and later breakfast at Parc. Try the Chai, it is brilliant!

Then head to your preferred mountain and maybe have some snow play time. Build a snowman and show off your tobogganing skills. For a late lunch, try out Wild Brumby Distillery.

There is plenty of room to run around for the kids and free schnapps taste testing for the adults!

Jindabyne is a small town in the Snowy Mountains region of New South Wales , Australia .

Understand [ edit ]

Map

Jindabyne ("Jindy") is just below the snow line and essentially acts as a dormitory for the ski fields in the winter, especially for Perisher . Staying in Jindabyne is cheaper than staying on the snow, but you need to be prepared for an hour long "snow commute" at the beginning and end of each day, possibly longer if the weather is bad or the roads are icy. Crackenback , to the west of Jindabyne and close to the ski tube station, is an increasingly popular option for shortening the commute but is priced to match.

It's also popular for fishing and hiking in the warmer months, but summer brings clouds of insects, and for some reason some local accommodation lacks air conditioning, which can make hot weather oppressive.

Get in [ edit ]

By car [ edit ].

Jindabyne is 2½ hours drive from Canberra south on the Monaro Highway to Cooma and then south west on the Jindabyne Road. It is 5–6 hours from Sydney via Canberra. These trips do not require snow chains.

Jindabyne is 7 hours from Melbourne on the Hume Highway to Wodonga , then the Murray Valley Highway and Alpine Way. Taking Alpine Way in winter may require snow chains be carried and fitted.

By bus [ edit ]

Murrays, Greyhound Pioneer and Transborder Alpine Express offers services. Some of them are seasonal.

Snowy Mountains Airport Shuttle [dead link] offers an infrequent airport shuttle to and from Cooma airport, but is fairly expensive and costs about the same as a bus to Canberra which is more reliable.

By plane [ edit ]

There is a regional airport with a few flights from Brisbane and Sydney in Cooma , about a 45-km, 30-minute drive from Jindabyne.

The nearest year-round airport with scheduled services is Canberra . Car hire is available there.

It is a 2 1/2-hour drive from Canberra if the traffic is free flowing. Snowy Mountains Express operate a coach between Canberra airport, Jindabyne and the snow during winter a couple of times a day. In summer, Greyhound is the only option, a once daily service.

Get around [ edit ]

Jindabyne is a pretty small town and the preferred mode of transport is either walking or riding your bicycle.

If you are staying a little further out, you will need a car as there is no public transport available. Don't count on taxis - Jindabyne is a one-cab town. You may be waiting a while! Call a taxi on the national number, 131 008.

Hitchhiking is quite common to see in Jindabyne, especially between the town centre and the ski-tube. However, you should keep in mind the cost of fuel (and add at least 20c-50c per litre in Jindabyne, especially during high season). The etiquite is to offer your kind host a gold coin donation.

See [ edit ]

The Visitors Centre near Nuggets Crossing has a small museum on the area connected to the gift shop. There's a walkway that follows the bank of Lake Jindabyne that leads to a park that holds a statue of the most famous explorer of the Snowy Mountains, Strzelecki who named the highest peak Mount Kosciuszko.

Do [ edit ]

If you're not too tired from skiing/boarding, Jindabyne Cinema has one screen that shows various current releases. It's located in the Snowy Mountains Visitors Centre. Its claim to fame was for holding the world premiere of the movie Jindabyne starring Gabriel Byrne, Laura Linney, and Deborra-Lee Furness whose husband Hugh Jackman was spotted in town during filming. Several local town locations were used in the movie.

Buy [ edit ]

Jindabyne has 2 shopping centres.

  • -36.415 148.6206 1 Nuggets Crossing . The more modern option with Woolworths supermarket, ski/board hire, lots of snow clothing shops and boutique shops and banks, a bakery, Mountain Munchies which offers good takeaway food, and a newsagent. ( updated Apr 2023 )
  • -36.4159 148.6236 2 Town Centre Shopping Centre . The old shopping centre with lots of restaurants and cheap takeaway food places, a supermarket, a butcher, more snow gear shops, ski/board hire, and where most of the bars are found. Both are in walking distance of each other. ( updated Apr 2023 )

Eat [ edit ]

Both shopping centres offer all types of restaurants such as Italian, pizzerias, Chinese, Thai, seafood, burgers, basic takeaways and more, but the tastiest cheap meals you can find will be in the bars and pubs (below). You won't find any franchise/chain places here but if you're desperate for KFC or McDonalds head back to Cooma.

Directly behind Nuggets Crossing are a few other eating options such as cafes, pizza and seafood.

Drink [ edit ]

Lake Jindabyne Hotel and Woolworths have bottle shops for those wanting a cheaper night in at your accommodation place.

  • -36.4142 148.6233 1 Lake Jindabyne Hotel . "LJ" to the local, this is one of the few places in town with good meals, live music and pool tables. It is generally the local's choice, although many will stear clear during the high season which will see the pub full of holiday revellers and punters. For a relaxing beer overlooking the lake, head in early. For a big night out, order another drink and hang around. ( updated Apr 2023 )
  • -36.4166 148.6246 2 Banjo Paterson Inn ( At the end of the old shopping centre ). Known as a party bar during the snow season, a decent alternative to the Lake Jindabyne Hotel if it gets too busy. ( updated Apr 2023 )
  • -36.4156 148.6186 3 Brumby Bar & Grill . Small but friendly atmosphere, great bistro meals, sport on TVs, an alternative to those not looking for a loud place like the Banjo or Lake Jindabyne. ( updated Apr 2023 )
  • -36.4171 148.6254 4 Jindabyne Bowling Club . The only RSL-type place in town, not much atmosphere but has cheap drinks, decent meals, and sport on TV screens. International visitors may need a passport to enter as UK/EU IDs have been rejected in the past. Located across the street from the old shopping centre. ( updated Apr 2023 )

Sleep [ edit ]

Jindabyne is a ski town, so during the ski season prices skyrocket and many places can only be booked for Fri-Sun (2 nights) or Sun-Fri (5 nights) blocks.

Budget [ edit ]

Jindabyne's sole backpacker hostel closed its doors in 2020 during COVID, leaving the town short of any budget options. Even the two holiday parks charge north of $600/night for a basic cabin in peak ski season — and a quarter of that in the off season.

Mid-range [ edit ]

Locals tend to opt for serviced apartments, which come with cooking and laundry facilities and are handy particularly for longer stays or larger groups. Snowy Mountains Accommodation and Jindabyne Ski Accommodation have access to many apartments that do not show up in the usual suspects (Airbnb, Booking etc). Off-season rates from $300/night for a 2-bedroom apartment, twice or more that in ski season.

  • -36.45091 148.61438 1 The Station . Motel and apartment hotel about 5km out of town. Operated by Perisher , so it offers deals which include bus transfers, lift tickets and ski/board hire. Unfortunately without a car you're stuck there each night and morning. From $160/night (off-season) . ( updated Mar 2024 )

Splurge [ edit ]

  • -36.41498 148.61669 2 Rydges Horizons Resort , 10 Kosciuszko Rd . Lakeside apartment hotel managed by the Rydges chain. Facilities include a heated indoor pool. $330 to $1300 . ( updated Mar 2024 )

Go next [ edit ]

The closest ski fields are:

  • Perisher to the west, which can be reached by road on Alpine Way and Kosciuszko Road or by the ski tube from Bullocks Flat on Alpine Way
  • Thredbo to the south-west, which can be reached by road on Alpine Way.

The Wildbrumby Distillery [1] 10km out of town in Crackenback on the road to Thredbo is a great place to stop over and try some local schnapps and has a gift shop and a cafe.

Ask at the Visitors Centre for more travel options, anything from local lakes to a winding road meeting up with the Hume Highway to Melbourne.

Where is Jindabyne?

Things to do in Jindabyne map

Jindabyne is a lovely inland city located in the southeastern portion of New South Wales, Australia. It overlooks Lake Jindabyne near the Snowy Mountains, making it a great base for a number of outdoor things to do in Jindabyne and the surrounding area.

In terms of driving distances, Jindabyne is nearly 5 hours (460km) from Sydney , 2 hours (175 km) from Canberra, and 7 hours (525 km) from Melbourne .

Top things to do in Jindabyne

Discover lake jindabyne.

Visiting Lake Jindabyne, Australia is one of the popular things to do in Jindabyne

Lake Jindabyne is a favourite spot for many regional visitors. It’s the largest freshwater reservoir in New South Wales, and it’s full of fish like brook trout, Atlantic salmon, rainbow trout, and more.

While many say enjoying the aesthetic beauty of the lake is one of the best things to do in Jindabyne, others enjoy a range of activities. The lake is a great spot for birdwatching or a picnic. Popular summertime activities include fishing, swimming, water skiing, wakeboarding, and mountain biking along the Jindabyne biking trail.

Surrounded by a backdrop of the Snowy Mountains, there are ski resorts nearby in Thredbo and Perisher, making the area popular during winter as well.

Jindabyne Dam

Jindabyne dam New South Wales, Australia

About 2km outside of town, the Jindabyne Dam is used for generating hydropower. Built in 1967, this huge rockfill embankment dam is situated on the Snowy River. Jindabyne river receives its water from this dam.

This is a nice spot for enjoying sunsets. There is a walking path where you can stroll around and enjoy the serene view. If you time it right, you may get the chance to see the water being released. The giant spill fountain is quite a sight to enjoy.

Trout fishing is allowed, although boating is not. Unfortunately, there is no car park at the dam.

Check out the Snowy Region visitor centre

Get maps, information, brochures, and park entry passes at this guiding centre for Kosciuszko National Park.

The visitor’s centre remains open every day from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm except for Christmas. The Snowy Region Visitor Centre is located in town; therefore, outside the national park, and no entry fees are required.

Before hiking in a remote part of Kosciuszko National Park, go to the visitor centre to fill out an intention form and hire a PLB (Personal Locator Beacon).

Thredbo River picnic area

Thredbo River near Jindabyne, NSW, Australia

The Thredbo River Picnic area sits alongside the Thredbo River and is a great picnic spot with free barbeques. You can rest here on your way to the snowy region. There is an entry fee to the park.

Once you enter the park, you will experience the richness of green forest surrounding the place with the river next to it. Enjoy some barbeque and savour your meals on the picnic benches or the soft grass.

If you get lucky enough, you can observe some platypus at the bank of the river. If you like to fish, try out your luck in the river. Remember to bring your own drinking or cooking water and note that there is limited mobile reception.

Walk the Pallaibo walking track

The Pallaibo walking track is a grade 3 one-way walk in Kosciuszko National Park that goes down to the lower end of Sawpit Creek from the Thredbo picnic area. This area is great for wildlife and nature photography.

Thredbo River runs along this path, so fishing is another activity you can enjoy here. You can experience some snow during winter, but in summer extreme levels of heat, wind, and rain can be experienced. At one point, the river connects with a waterfall.

If it’s right near the mountains, does that mean the amount of poisonous snakes and spiders is far lower?
