How to Use a Safari Ad Blocker

AdBlock

AdBlock’s Blog

Safari users know that browsing the web is full of distractions. No one loves seeing ads in the middle of the content they’re trying to read or watch. From ads that take up a whole page to pop-ups to pop-unders, ads come in a variety of intrusive shapes and sizes. Thankfully, a Safari ad blocker like AdBlock for Safari allows you to take more control over your browsing experience and block annoying ads.

Block Ads with a Safari Ad Blocker

When you install AdBlock for Safari , you’re blocking annoying ads and pop-ups as soon as the extension is running. There’s nothing else you need to do!

To block ads:

  • Install AdBlock Safari by going to the Mac App store to download the app.
  • …That’s it! You’re now blocking intrusive ads and pop-ups.

Monitor Your Online Health with a Safari Ad Blocker

AdBlock for Safari comes with a unique feature — the ability to monitor your Online Health score and integrate with AdBlock VPN . Online Health allows you to see how healthy your internet connection is in terms of online security . With this tool, you’re able to have more control over your internet connection by assessing your health score. You can up this score by using both ad blocking and VPN features to ensure that your connection is encrypted, private, and safe from snoops.

And if you do choose to up your score by using a VPN, AdBlock for Safari allows you to upgrade to and manage AdBlock VPN right from the app. AdBlock VPN increases your Online Health score as it’s a great tool for allowing you to connect to the internet privately. That’s because VPNs create an encrypted connection, often referred to as a ‘tunnel,’ between your devices and the VPN servers. All of your internet traffic is routed through that secure tunnel, keeping your data encrypted and your personal information secure. This keeps your data safe from third party snoops and hackers.

You can use AdBlock VPN to hide your online identity, access content blocked by geolocation, and use public Wi-Fi more safely. And best of all you can use AdBlock VPN on up to six devices.

If you’re interested in giving a Safari ad blocker a try, we’re proud to suggest our very own AdBlock for Safari. With the ability to block ads, pop-ups, and integrate with AdBlock VPN , it’s a great tool for taking back control of your browsing experience and upping your online security. You can download AdBlock for Safari by going to the Mac app store . Of course, if you have any questions along the way, our support team is available via email at [email protected] .

The Best Ad Blocking Tool

I’ve used Adblock Plus for Safari for about two years, along with two other ad blockers. Recently I upgraded my iPad to iOS17. Suddenly got ads all over the place! I checked the Adblock Plus and readjusted my enabled websites list, and closed the iPad, then re-opened it after a few minutes. Voilá— no more ads! This app is much more efficient than the other two ad blockers I used before. My suggestion to anyone having ad problems after installing an iOS update is just to check and recalibrate your Adblock Plus, and close your device, then re-open it. I really hate ads, so I love this app.

Does what it was supposed to

It would be good for a paid app, for a free one, it's pretty great. Blocks scams/ads when other apps try opening safari. Still opens to a blocked content page, but you get what you get when you don't put money into what you think is important

Works great… when it works

Using this on an iPhone 11 (running iOS 16.3). If you get it running, it works very well, having the option of allowing acceptable ads or blocking all. Allows ads on sites you put on the “allow list”. However, my experience with it has been less than stellar. If the app is updated, or turned off for whatever reason then turned back on, it is like it isn’t even running (even though it is turned on and “block ads” is selected). Tried shutting it down and restarting, shutting Safari down and restarting, etc. after a few days it randomly starts blocking. This would easily be a 5 star app if this was fixed, as it is very frustrating.

Blocking Ads in Safari on iOS, iPadOS and macOS

We are living in a world, where everybody is trying to commercialise almost everything. If selling products and services does not bring desired income and users have had already too many subscriptions to pay for another one, there’s comes Ads.

Nobody likes Ads. They can ruin the reading experience on the website, cause our computer to choke due to excessive use of resources, or put your device or ourselves at risk due to privacy matters.

I used to use, back in 2020 ads, that display dynamically on my site, through Google AdSense. This does not even bring the return of the costs, that I put into it. What’s more annoying, using Google Ads has a huge negative impact on my website performance. Ironically, my site has been penalised by Google in their ranking, due to using their solution!

Once I migrated to Hugo and start using Netlify in their free plan, I reduced costs significantly, and because of that, I decided to banish Ads altogether. My site doesn’t have millions of visitors per month, hence it does not cost me a lot to maintain it. At the time, when I will be somehow noticed, I will gain a decent number of visitors, can imagine that I will be facing other opportunities to gain profit, and hopefully this will not be from Ads.

When I appreciate Ads system like EthicalAds, Privacy-preserving Ad Network or BuySellAds , there are still Ad systems that cause me a headache. If they annoy me, they annoy others as well.

On my devices, I am using Safari as my default browser. You may say what you like about it, but definitely, it’s not the new Internet Explorer.

I am using a dual approach. To preserve my privacy and to remove annoyances from the websites that I visit every day. Here is how I am doing that on my devices.

iOS (iPhone) and iPadOS (iPad) Link copied to clipboard "),setTimeout(()=>{document.querySelectorAll(".link-copied").forEach(e=>e.remove())},3e3)'>

On these devices I am using Firefox Focus (free) and Adblock Plus (free) .

Firefox Focus is a standalone internet browser, but I am using only its integration with the safari which allows me to block trackers and maintain my privacy.

Firefox Focus Link copied to clipboard "),setTimeout(()=>{document.querySelectorAll(".link-copied").forEach(e=>e.remove())},3e3)'>

Download Firefox Focus from AppStore

When the app is downloaded, open it and follow through initial setup/tutorial.

As we will not use Firefox Focus as a browser, we can close it and go back to Home Screen on our device.

Head to device Settings and section Safari

In General section go to Extensions and in section Allow there content blockers tick (turn on) Firefox Focus . And that’s all.

AdBlock Plus Link copied to clipboard "),setTimeout(()=>{document.querySelectorAll(".link-copied").forEach(e=>e.remove())},3e3)'>

Download Adblock Plus for Safari (ABP) from AppStore

Apart from part Block ads that need to be turned on (ticked), we don’t need to do anything else.

In General section go to Extensions and in section Allow there content blockers tick (turn on) Adblock Plus . And that’s all.

This is how it all will look.

Now you can browse as you typically do in Safari. In the background, Firefox Focus and AdBlock Plus will do what it is intended to.

macOS (Mac computers) Link copied to clipboard "),setTimeout(()=>{document.querySelectorAll(".link-copied").forEach(e=>e.remove())},3e3)'>

As Firefox Focus is not available for Mac computers (shame!), as an alternative I am using DuckDuckGo Privacy Essentials extension (free) along with Adblock Plus .

Ironically, DuckDuckGo is available on mobile devices as a standalone web browser with its privacy functions, same as Firefox Focus, however, it’s not possible to use its functionality as an extension to Safari (shame!).

DuckDuckGo Privacy Essentials Link copied to clipboard "),setTimeout(()=>{document.querySelectorAll(".link-copied").forEach(e=>e.remove())},3e3)'>

Download DuckDuckGo Privacy Essentials from AppStore

Through the tutorial, you will be asked to Launch Safari Preferences and on the Extensions tab to enable (tick) Privacy Dashboard and Privacy Protection .

After that’s done, your setup is ready.

What’s important, using the DuckDuckGo extension on Mac doesn’t change our search engine in the browser, or how the address bar is behaving when using it to search the web. Read here, how to change the default search engine in the Internet browser .

Adblock Plus for Safari ABP Link copied to clipboard "),setTimeout(()=>{document.querySelectorAll(".link-copied").forEach(e=>e.remove())},3e3)'>

Download Adblock Plus from AppStore

During one step setup, you will be asked to Launch Safari Preferences and on the Extensions tab to enable (tick) ABP and ABP Control Panel .

5 Ways To Turn Off Ad Blocker on Safari

abp control panel safari

Content filtering tools or ad blockers exist to prevent ads and popups from affecting your browsing experience and protect your online identity from being tracked. But sometimes, you may want to disable them to access websites that don’t load with the ad blocker enabled.

In this post, we’ll explain all the ways you can disable ad blockers inside Safari on your Mac and iPhone.

How to disable ad blockers in Safari on Mac [2 methods]

If you’re using the Safari browser on your Mac and want to disable an ad blocker on it, then the following methods should help you get it done.

Method 1: Disable ad Blocker in Safari Settings

Safari has a native content-blocking system that prevents ads, popups, trackers, and other undesirable items from appearing on a website. This option is turned ON by default but you can disable it inside Safari’s Preferences to see a website with all of its elements appear as originally intended.

  • To disable Content Blockers on a website, launch the Safari app on your Mac and go to the website you want to disable content blockers from.

abp control panel safari

  • This should disable Content Blockers for this particular website but Safari will keep it enabled for other websites you visit. When you disable Content Blockers for a website on Safari, the website will reload and this time it will show all the elements of the page as it was originally intended.

abp control panel safari

  • On the right-hand panel, you should be able to see a list of all the websites that are currently open on Safari and the ones you have configured content blockers on in two different sections.

abp control panel safari

Method 2: Disable ad blocker extensions

If you use a third-party extension on Safari for ad blocking, then you can also choose to disable it to unblock a certain element from a website. All third-party extensions come with a dedicated button that can be enabled adjacent to the Safari Address bar at the top. You can use this button to disable the ad blocker temporarily or to keep it switched off when visiting a website.

Disable extension temporarily

  • To disable the ad blocker extension temporarily, open the Safari app on your Mac.
  • Inside Safari, go to the website you want to whitelist for your ad blocker.

While the names of these options may differ from one extension to another, their functionality will remain more or less the same.

Disable extension permanently

abp control panel safari

  • Inside the Extensions screen, uncheck the boxes adjacent to the several features of your ad blocker extension from the left sidebar. You can uncheck all the boxes of the ad blocker extension to disable all parts of the app’s functions.

How to disable ad blockers in Safari on iPhone [3 methods]

Similar to Safari on macOS, you can also disable content blockers on iOS’ native browser on your iPhone. However, you will have to install a third-party content blocker app on iOS and then enable it inside the Settings app for the Content Blocker setting to appear on your iPhone. In this instance, we’re using the 1Blocker app that has dedicated Safari extensions on iOS.

When you have a content blocker app installed on iOS, you can disable the blocker temporarily, for a particular website, or permanently depending on your preferences.

Method 1: Disable the ad blocker temporarily

  • To disable the ad blocker temporarily for all websites you’re currently visiting, open the Safari app on your iOS device and launch any website.

Method 2: Disable ad blocker for a single website

If you wish to disable the ad blocker for a particular website, you need to access the Website View menu on Safari yet again.

  • Open the Safari app on your iPhone, and go to the website where you want to disable the ad blocker on.

Method 3: Disable the ad blocker permanently

In case you don’t wish to use an ad blocker for a long time or permanently, you can disable it inside Safari settings on iOS.

Why should you turn off ad blockers on Safari?

There are a ton of reasons why you might want to disable ad blockers on your web browser. The biggest reason is an obvious one- it’s to access websites that aren’t visible when you have ad blockers enabled. Some websites depend entirely on the revenue they generate by displaying ads and can detect when you use an ad blocker to prevent it from being visible. The only way you can access these sites is to turn off ad blockers on these websites.

Most websites might be accessible with ad blockers enabled but parts of them like web forms won’t load up on some occasions. In those situations, you’re better off pausing your ad blocker temporarily so that you can get your work done or submit the form and then go back to reactivating the ad blocker.

Another major reason to turn off ad blockers is an ethical one. By disabling content blocking, you can support the sites and companies whose content you like and consume often. If a site shows less intrusive ads that don’t hamper your browsing experience, you can leave them unblocked so you can continue supporting their revenue.

Can you disable the detection of Ad blockers on Safari?

“It looks like you’re using an ad blocker”.

This is one of the phrases you may encounter when you visit a website that detects when you’re using an ad blocker to prevent ads from popping up on the site.  This happens when a site detects that its ad-based resources are being hidden or rejected by your browser. Some websites are designed to track the presence of an ad blocker by extracting a fraction of the JavaScript code.

So, can you disable a site’s ability to detect an ad blocker on Safari?

Yes. One way to do that is by using the Anti-Adblock Killer extension on your web browser. The extension can be installed on most popular browsers including Safari but using it isn’t as straightforward as installing an extension on Safari. To block a page from detecting your ad blocker on Safari, you first need to install the extension for Safari, then subscribe to different filter lists, and install user scripts.

If you don’t want to go through this complex process, there are other easy but effective ways to evade ad blocker detection. These include:

  • Use Private Windows on Safari : Going incognito is pretty much the best alternative to blocking. That’s because the ads that are shown to you won’t be targeted to you and even if you click on one, you don’t stand the risk of getting linked to your account. You can open a Private Window on Safari by going to Safari > New Private Window from the Menu bar at the top.
  • Enable Reader View on Safari : Apple’s native web browser offers a dedicated reading mode that when enabled can force sites to be shown without javascript. When you toggle Reader View for a webpage, you will only be able to see the text and images present. With Reader View enabled, neither ads nor ad-detection prompts will load up or be visible on a webpage. Reader View can be enabled using the Reader View button on a website’s address bar or by using the Command + Shift + R keyboard shortcut on a website.
  • Disable JavaScript on Safari : You can also permanently disable JavaScript for Safari by going to Safari > Preferences > Security > Web Content and then unchecking the Enable JavaScript checkbox. While you may escape ads and detection, you may also encounter issues when loading the website as some elements of the site may not load up on Safari or may malfunction.

safari 16.0 web rendering problems (macOS 12.6)

With one of the latest updates, Safari is no longer able to render full-screen type graphics correctly. For example, https://maps.google.com/, Wundermap ( https://www.wunderground.com/wundermap?lat=39.933&lon=-105.058&zoom=8&radar=1&wxstn=0 ) and basically anything that fills a browser window with dynamic content. The vertical content is squeezed into something about 10% the height of the original window.

Any thoughts on how to clear this up? I've purged Safari cache, rebooted, and nothing.

Chrome and Firefox both render these URLs perfectly.

I've tried turning off 1Password and the ABP / ABP Control Panel extension, but still see the problem. They are the only plugin/extensions I have installed. Still poking at this. It seems to be something about sites that use a base-map of some kind with data over the top. Here's an interesting one from https://napsg.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html . I'll keep trying to figure this out. I'm also going to build a Parallels machine from my baseOS recovery disk and see if that Safari does the same thing...

I have two MacBook Pros with 12.6 (and Safari 16.0) and both show these sites properly (there was something odd with your google maps link ... page not found ... but when I manually entered it, it showed up properly).

Since you have already determined that other browsers work for you, that seems to point to your Safari set up. Do you have any plugins, additions etc. to the vanilla version of Safari from Apple? Any other "enhancements," things like "Cleanup" programs, anti-virus, or third party security tools which might interfere with retrieval of online info?

Sep 27, 2022 8:39 PM in response to parkerpress

I don't think 1Password is the issue, that is used by scores of people.

However Adblock (ABP) might be interacting here as it blocks content from Safari. I would try completing uninstalling Adblock as well as its Control Panel. Turning them off is not the same, it remains installed and that can impact things.

If removing Adblock or ABP don't solve this, I would download Etrecheck, which is an open source utility that extracts info about software that has been installed and looks for conflicts or adware. It basically provides the info in About This Mac but formats the output so that it is much easier to read and find culprits for things like this. Paste the output here using the Additional text button below.

By the way, I clicked on all your links and get nicely rendered maps!

An aside: do you have any anti-virus or security software, "cleaner" utilities, things like that installed? In any case, Etrecheck will show them if you do.

Some problems with Zotero in Safari 17.0?

  • adomasven October 3, 2023 Can you reliably reproduce this broken button condition? If so, what are the steps to reproduce it?
  • zzotterro2 October 3, 2023 I am using Mac Monterey. I have Zotero Connector running. I have Safari 17 running. I am on this page (the Zotero forum, this discussion). I set up a new Collection in Zotero (called TEST). I went to my Safari toolbar, where the Zotero icon appears as a blue page (blue might possibly be a result of my Safari settings?). I left-clicked the blue page icon - nothing was saved to my TEST collection. Then, I tried right-clicking on the web page. If I was outside the margin of the white section (I guess on the page background), then when I right-clicked, I saw the context-specific menu, but if I chose "Save to Zotero (Web page with snapshot)", nothing happened. But then I tried with my cursor inside this forum section, right-clicked, got the context-specific menu, and chose the save with snapshot option, and it worked. I was going to repeat this to make sure it was right, so I trashed the snapshot from inside Zotero Connector. I think clicking the blue icon still did not work, but now clicking anywhere on this page (I was outside the forum margin, on the background), did seem to work, but my drop down "saving" box stayed on my screen, and is still stuck there. I am sorry if this is confusing. Something seems to be wrong, but this is all I can do right now to trouble shoot. Must get to sleep. Thank you for looking into this.
  • adomasven October 3, 2023 Do you have any other extension enabled in Safari? Could you try temporarily disabling them and seeing if the button works? Have you tried restarting your Mac?
  • zzotterro2 October 3, 2023 Yes, I have Malwarebytes Browser Guard 2.0.0 (it seems to have 4 components listed separately in Preferences>Extensions), Bitwarden Free Password Manager, ABP 2.2.10 (and ABP Control Panel, listed separately), Grammerly, and, of course, Zotero Connector 5.0.109. I will try to find time later today or tomorrow to experiment with turning them off and restarting my Mac. (Irrelevant: I wish I could find a good tab manager for Safari. I use Tree Style Tab for Firefox, and have just started experimenting with Tabs Outliner in Brave. I tend to have a huge number of browser tabs open at all times, and cannot really function without such an extension.)
  • zzotterro2 October 4, 2023 Hi - I don't want to deal with restarting my Mac right now (takes a long time, bec of having so many tabs open in Firefox). But I did go to Safari Preferences>Extensions, and unchecked Malwarebytes Browser Guard (all 4 components), Bitwarden Free Password Manager, ABP (and its Control Panel), and Grammerly. So Zotero Connector was the only enabled extension. Then I tried to save a snapshot of a page, using the button, and it did not work.
  • dstillman October 4, 2023 edited October 4, 2023 Can you provide a Debug ID from the Zotero Connector for loading the page and trying to save, and also provide a Report ID from the Zotero app?
  • zzotterro2 October 4, 2023 I'll do that tomorrow. (I've never done it before.) Do you care whether or not the other extensions are enabled or not?
  • dstillman October 4, 2023 When unexpected things are happening, it's always best to test with other extensions disabled.
  • adomasven October 4, 2023 @zzotterro2 you should to restart Safari after disabling other extensions before testing the Zotero Connector.
  • zzotterro2 October 4, 2023 I disabled all extensions except Zotero Connector. Then, I restarted Safari. Also, quit Zotero Connector and restarted it. Turned on debug logging. Tried to save snapshots of this page and the debug output logging page (documentation page). Both snapshots were saved! Submitted Debug ID D1688214456 and Report ID 1356163270. I guess the next step is to re-enable the other extensions, one at a time, to see if that causes the problem to reoccur.
  • zzotterro2 October 4, 2023 Oy. Now I can't re-enable the other extensions. I get a message, "Safari detected an app or service that interfered with clicking." And the Learn More link is https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT211233?cid=mc-ols-safari-article_h211233-macos_ui-06162020 . (Apparently, this security feature was triggered by the Zotero logging, even though Zotero logging is no longer enabled, and I restarted Zotero Connector and Safari again.) So I guess I have to restart my Mac in Safe Mode, to try to enable the extensions. But I'm not going to do that right now. (Restarting, as I said, takes a long time, bec of all the tabs I have open in Firefox.)
  • dstillman October 4, 2023 No, that message isn't caused by Zotero or debug logging. It sounds like Zotero is working fine now, but just to note, there's no point trying to troubleshoot anything if you can't you can't restart your computer. That's the most basic troubleshooting step and the first thing to try for any weird problem. (I'm not sure what that would have to do with Firefox tabs. I have thousands upon thousands of years-old tabs in Firefox, and I can restart it in a few seconds like any other program.) You should also make sure you're running the latest version of Monterey, if not a newer macOS version.
  • zzotterro2 October 5, 2023 I am very relieved to hear that I'm not the only one with thousands of Firefox tabs! (I was sure it was a personal failing.) But something about Firefox (I've been assuming it's the gazillion tabs) messes up my computer, bogs things down, and then I need to restart Firefox to fix it. And whenever I quit and reopen, it takes a few minutes to accomplish that. Possibly it's one of my Firefox extensions - I use Bitwarden (free), DDG Privacy Essentials, Malwarebytes Browser Guard, Sort tabs advanced, Startpage search engine, TrafficLight (from Bitdefender), Tranquility Reader, Tree Style Tab, uBlock Origin, and Zotero Connector. Whew, didn't realize there were so many! I'd say BitWarden, Zotero Connector, and Tree Style Tab are essential to me. I think Malwarebytes Browser Guard sometimes alerts me not to go to particular web pages. And uBlock Origin is probably useful, although I've never really mastered it. (Recently stumbled across documentation that I plan to read/watch.) I can see there is probably a good bit of overlap in what I have... I guess I could experiment, to see if one of them is causing the slow restart, but if it's Tree Style Tab, well, I can't be without it. Also, when Firefox seems to grinding to a halt (beachball showing up), Activity Monitor usually shows multiple processes called FirefoxCP Isolated Web Content, which account for the high CPU usage. I guess I should find a Firefox forum to get help with all this - I had just been assuming it was the frightening number of tabs I had open. I have the latest version of Monterey, and 16 GB RAM, by the way. (I read that some Intel Macs might not run Ventura all that well, because it is optimized for silicon Macs.) Anyway, getting back to Zotero, I thought the problem with not being able to re-enable my Firefox extensions was because I turned on Zotero logging temporarily - Apple says if you can’t turn on extensions in Safari, in some cases, it's because this feature is affected by the use of legitimate software that has certain screen-recording or accessibility features. So I thought the logging might similarly have triggered this. I was going to restart now, but it's gotten too late - I will do it tomorrow. Hopefully, that will resolve my extension enabling problem. I will let you know if my problem with Zotero continues. Thanks very much.
  • zzotterro2 October 5, 2023 PS - So it is still possible that my original problem with the Zotero button in Safari is due to interference from one of my Safari browser extensions (Malwarebytes Browser Guard (4 components), Bitwarden Free Password Manager, ABP (and its Control Panel), and Grammerly). I won't know for sure until I restart, and manage to re-enable the extensions.
  • zzotterro2 October 6, 2023 I restarted my Mac in Safe Mode, re-enabled my extensions in Safari. Restarted back in normal mode. Zotero button is now working in Safari, with all my extensions enabled. When I tried it in Brave, the button works, altho the "Saving to Zotero [folder]" window that opens remains open until I expand it and click "Done". So all seems good - thanks! By the way, while in Safe Mode, Safari and Firefox would not display webpages normally - they just looked completely white. If I clicked on the tab, it might show the page for a second, but then it vanished. That isn't normal for Safe Mode, is it? Brave seemed to work normally. Now that I am out of Safe Mode, pages are displaying normally in Safari and Brave. But in Firefox, my default browser, it is taking a REALLY long time for my open tabs to display content. The tabs are all there - the icons are there, and the URLs are displayed in a tooltip, if I hover over the tab icons - but the pages are not displaying any content yet (the page is just white). (It might be because I got impatient when I wanted to restart my Mac in not-safe mode. I had quit Firefox, but as usual, it was taking a lot of time for it to quit completely, so I force quit it.) I am letting it sit... I think the content is now loading on some pages. (But you can see why I was reluctant to restart Firefox - it can take awhile, though it has never taken as long as this.) I have to get to the bottom of this Firefox problem. But meanwhile, I am very relieved that the pages are finally loading! Whew! And I just tested the Zotero button, and it is working in Firefox, as well. So thanks for everything - it seems that Zotero is working fine now!

Comments About Safari 16.6

Notable replies.

Safari 16.6 for Monterey and Big Sur was actually re-released on the 26th with a bump in build numbers: Monterey Safari 16.6 (17615.3.12.11.3) Big Sur Safari 16.6 (16615.3.12.11.3)

To this day, I still cannot use Safari (on Mac, but OK in iOS, go figure) to display any map or infographic on my city, state highway dept. or utility’s websites.

But other browsers work fine? Can you post some links?

Chuck, I had a very similar problem on my MacBook Air (2020) that somehow migrated to my MBP 2022. I think the problem was on my 2011 MBP initially but cannot remember that far back.

Frustrating. I realized that the culprit managed its way onto the new machine when I moved data from the Air to the Pro via a Carbon Copy Cloner restore.

Since there is really no easy and though way to reformat an SSD so that one knows there is not a thread of anything old left on it, I asked my Apple dealer to do it. It took a lot of convincing that I wanted a better than VIRGIN MBP. They did as I asked. Then, using an external Toshiba T5 SSD, I moved only the data files I needed from the SSD to the MBP.

I then downloaded absolutely fresh copies of the programs I needed from the net. I chose this order so that the freshly downloaded apps were initially opened using that data file I had just placed on the drive. I did NOT want the app to create a new file. (The drag and drop feature works quite well here.O

I copied no files from the ~Library ƒ. I even rebuilt my Little Snitch database from scratch instead of loading my saved prefs file.

The problem was fixed. I cannot promise nor guarantee that my solution would work for you. If you have the time, and a number of faithfully executed backups, It just might be the ticket out of your thicket. If you do take me up, I really would like to know the outcome.

I discussed clean installs in this general area in:

It’s definitely worth trying a lot of other solutions first, since these deep rebuilds take a ton of time.

example: Michigan DOT Traffic and road conditions map.

Overlays and legends show, but not map layer (blank white screen). Displays correctly on Firefox, Chrome, Duck browser, Safari (on iOS/iPad OS). This and other data maps (electric utility outages, etc.) and info graphics are never displayed on Mac Safari. Sometimes get a “OpenGL or WebGL Not Supported” back from sites. Currently MBPro (2016), Safari v 16.6, Monterey 12.6.8.

I tried it on my Mac (Mac mini 2018, macOS Big Sur 11.7.9, Safari 16.6 (16615.3.12.11.3, 16615)).

It all seems to load normally. The map layer loaded a few seconds after everything else, but it all loaded for me.

My only Safari extensions are AdBlock Plus, the ABP control panel, and Webex (disabled). ABP was enabled, but didn’t seem to affect the site’s behavior.

My ISP is Comcast. I am using my own DNS server (on a Raspberry Pi) that resolves everything on its own (via the root-servers, not falling back to any third-party DNS server).

It works here in macOS 13.5 Ventura too.

Have you tried it from a guest account to see if there might be an account-related setting that’s causing it? And do you have another Mac that could try it (or do you have a friend who could bring a laptop over)?

It feels like something highly specific to your setup, and some of these troubleshooting steps might reveal where to look.
