Your Trip to Buffalo: The Complete Guide

visit buffalo niagara board

Buffalo is the second-largest city in New York State by population, and a diverse city in Western New York State that has so much to offer travelers, from iconic 20th-century architecture to a thriving waterfront to heart-pumping activities, as well as a diverse food and drink scene. And while summer is ideal for enjoying the city’s parks and rivers, winter sees locals ice-skating and playing ice sports like hockey and curling.

The Erie Canal, Buffalo River, and Lake Erie are the three bodies of water around the city and their waterfronts are highlights of the Queen City.

Buffalo has a diverse lineup of neighborhoods worth checking out, like charming Elmwood Village, bustling downtown, artsy Allentown, hip Hertel Avenue, diverse Five Points, and Michigan and Jefferson Avenues, the crossroads of African American heritage in Queen City. Buffalo is an exciting city to explore, especially if you’re an art lover, foodie, or sports enthusiast. And, of course, it’s the gateway to Niagara Falls, one of the U.S.’s premier attractions.

You can’t visit Buffalo without experiencing the famous Erie Canal and its iconic grain elevators, the city's art and design scene, tailgating at hockey and football games, and winter activities like ice skating and hockey.

Planning Your Trip

Best Time to Visit: Buffalo has something to offer year-round, but it’s important to be aware that it gets very cold in winter, with snow a guarantee. In fact, the city has receives record-setting snowfalls on several occasions. Buffalonians don’t bat an eye, though, indulging in ice-skating, sledding, curling, and other winter sports—including inventive activities like ice bicycles and ice bumper cars. Even Niagara Falls is a sight worth seeing in winter. Spring and fall are excellent times to visit, with fewer visitors than summer and pleasant weather perfect for exploring the city and Niagara Falls without the crowds.  Summer is high season in Buffalo, and the riverfronts come alive with live music, fitness classes, and festivals. Museums, parks, restaurants, and other attractions are more crowded, and Niagara Falls will be packed. Hotel, car rental, and flight prices will be at their peak during the summer months. Early September brings the National Buffalo Wing Festival.

Language:  English.

Currency:  U.S. dollars.

Getting Around:  It’s best to get around by car in Buffalo, whether it’s your own or a taxi, Uber, or Lyft. There is a small public transportation system, though, the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority , which runs one train line that runs from the University of Buffalo to the First Niagara Center, where the Buffalo Sabres hockey team plays. The NFTA also runs an extensive number of buses on dozens of routes, and you can use the same tickets on both. Check schedules carefully for run times.

Travel Tip:  While using Buffalo as a base for a visit to Niagara Falls is a fine reason to visit the city, Buffalo has a lot to offer in its own right. Consider adding an extra day to your trip to explore the Queen City fully.

Things to Do

Buffalo is bursting with activities all year long. From top-notch museums to stunning parks and busy waterfronts, there are plenty of activities for kids and families, while couples and friend groups can also find plenty of things to do. Art and architecture fans, foodies, sports enthusiasts, and nature lovers will all be happy here. Don’t miss these activities:

  • Ice-skate: Winter visitors will be rewarded with a truly local experience as Canalside and the riverfront become a winter wonderland, complete with ice-skating, curling, and ice-bicycling on the lit-up canal. Rotary Rink and Buffalo Riverworks are other outdoor skating options downtown.
  • Ogle the architecture: Buffalo is home to multiple Frank Lloyd Wright homes and buildings, including the famous Darwin Martin House that you can tour, as well as Louis Sullivan’s Guaranty Building, H.H. Richardson’s landmarked Romanesque Richardson Olmsted Campus, Eliel and Eero Saarinen’s Kleinhans Music Hall, and Louise Blanchard Bethune’s Hotel at Lafayette.
  • Get on the water: The western terminus of the Erie Canal is an integral part of Buffalo, plus the Buffalo River and Lake Erie complete the waterfront trifecta. In summer, you can rent a kayak, paddleboard, pedal boat, or water bike. At Buffalo River, there’s a historic river cruise and boozy sailboat cruises to climb aboard, plus a pirate-themed one great for kids.

What to Eat and Drink

Everyone knows Buffalo wings were invented in Buffalo—and any visitor must eat them at the source (just called “wings” here) at Anchor Bar, where they were invented. But there are several other local foods to eat in Buffalo too: Be sure also to try Beef on Weck (at Schwabl’s or Charlie the Butcher), sponge candy from Fowler's Chocolates or Watson's Chocolates, chicken finger subs from Jim's SteakOut, and Buffalo-style pizza, a hybrid of deep dish and New York-style with charred pepperoni cups (try it at Carbone's Pizzeria or Lovejoy Pizzeria). There are also more upscale, farm-to-table spots like Billy Club and Roost worth checking out.

Buffalo has a solid craft beer scene with more than 35 breweries in the area, including Flying Bison Brewing Company, Community Beer Works, Hamburg Brewing Company, Resurgence Brewing Company, Big Ditch Brewing, and 42 North Brewing. There are also several distilleries like Lakeward Spirits, Lockhouse Distillery, and Black Squirrel Distillery.

Explore our article on the  best chicken wing spots in Buffalo .

Where to Stay

Buffalo has various options for accommodations. All the budget and midrange chain hotels are represented, and there are a few historic independent hotels worth checking out, including The Mansion on Delaware Avenue ; Curtiss Hotel, an Ascend Hotel Collection Member; Reikart House, Buffalo, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel ; and Hotel at the Lafayette a Trademark Collection Hotel . There’s also a wide selection of affordable Airbnbs, including apartments, townhouses, cottages, and houses. Downtown, Elmwood Village, and Allentown are good neighborhoods to use as a base.

Getting There

There are several ways to get to Buffalo:  flying , by train, bus, or driving. The Buffalo Niagara International Airport  in Buffalo is 9.4 miles from downtown Buffalo and 25 miles to Niagara Falls. Amtrak trains run to Buffalo from various cities, including New York City and Toronto; there are two stations in the city, Depew Station and Buffalo Exchange Street. Buses are the cheapest option, with Greyhound and Megabus running to the city, but they often take the longest time. And of course, driving is always an option.

Money Saving Tips

  • Buffalo has six stunning parks designed by Frederick Law Olmsted that are all free to explore, plus a 3-mile scenic trail by the canal to walk, run, or bike along.
  • Several museums and attractions have certain days or times that are "pay what you wish" or are sometimes free, like the Buffalo History Museum, the Buffalo Arts Studio, and the UB Anderson Gallery.
  • Visit during the spring, fall, or especially winter to save on airfare, hotels, and Airbnbs.

7 Reasons to Visit Buffalo on Your Niagara Falls Trip

author image

See recent posts by Kevin Brouillard

Every year, roughly eight million visitors make their way to the U.S.-Canadian border to witness the powerful and magnificent Niagara Falls . Many of these travelers come in and out without considering what exists beyond the falls. For those who find Niagara Falls’ tourist shops lacking authenticity and culture, nearby Buffalo is chock-full of museums, restaurants, and nightlife options that are far too often overlooked. Buffalo is a mere 25-minute drive south of Niagara Falls, making it a convenient base for visiting the falls. And while Niagara Falls is certainly worth the trip, here are seven reasons why you should consider lingering in Buffalo after your Maid of the Mist voyage.

Hotels in this story

1. The Impressive Architecture

Jeff Stevens/Flickr

Jeff Stevens/Flickr

Buffalo challenges Rust Belt stereotypes, swapping crumbling infrastructure with striking buildings created by some of the greatest American architectural minds, such as Frank Lloyd Wright and Frederick Law Olmsted. Starting downtown, the 32-story Buffalo City Hall stands out for its size and Art Deco style. Another downtown gem is the Hotel @ The Lafayette , which was designed by America’s first professional female architect, Louise Blanchard Bethune.

To get a glimpse inside some of Buffalo’s finest architecture, head to Richardson Olmsted Campus, which offers historical tours May through September. Here, the one-time mental asylum, which is preserved as a historical landmark, has been revitalized as the Hotel Henry Urban Resort and the upcoming Lipsey Architecture Center. Tours are also held at Frank Lloyd Wright’s multi-structure Martin House complex in the charming Parkside neighborhood. (Tip: Make a reservation in advance.) The geometric design is distinguished as one of Wright’s best Prairie Houses. Other works of Wright include the Graycliff estate on the shores of Lake Erie and the Wright Filling Station — a posthumous creation that can be viewed at Buffalo’s Pierce-Arrow Museum.

2. The Waterfront

Adam Moss/Flickr

Adam Moss/Flickr

Buffalo is situated at the confluence of Lake Erie, the Niagara River, and the Erie Canal. The city has managed to repurpose sections of its industrial waterfront to create public spaces that offer year-round activities. The Canalside area is the heart of the refurbished waterfront. The space hosts over 1,000 annual events, including outdoor yoga, concerts, and craft fairs in the summer. In the winter, Ice at Canalside, a 35,000-square-foot rink, is the perfect spot to enjoy skating, curling, and hockey. The summer concert series kicks off June 7 and runs every Thursday until late August. Meanwhile, the weekends are full of festivals, including the Buffalo Niagara Blues Festival and Buffalo Pints & Pierogi Fest.

Other highlights include RiverWorks, a multi-use space with a brewery, rock climbing, and more. It’s also known for its massive grain elevators painted to resemble a six-pack of beer. In the summer, the inner harbor and canals are teeming with kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, and water bikes that can be rented on-site. Bigger boats are on display at the Buffalo and Erie County Naval & Military Park (a World War II-era destroyer, cruiser, and submarine are open to public viewing).

3. The Progressive Community

A number of grassroots movements are alive and well in Buffalo. Though many of these initiatives aren’t visitor-oriented, they add to an atmosphere that is welcoming of diversity in all its forms. One such organization that offers community events and programs is the Massachusetts Avenue Project . It partnered with GObike Buffalo to organize a series of local farm bike tours, dubbed Tour de Farms . Last year’s ride visited several community gardens and farms operated by the Massachusetts Avenue Project, as well as a number of privately operated urban farms. The 2018 event has yet to be scheduled, but will likely occur in mid-September.

4. The Thriving Brewery Culture

Invest Buffalo Niagara/Flickr

Invest Buffalo Niagara/Flickr

Roughly a dozen craft breweries call Buffalo home — and that number is growing. These breweries have played a big part in the city’s revival, as they participate in numerous events, offer tastings, and provide welcoming spaces for locals and visitors alike. Flying Bison Brewing Company was Buffalo’s first craft brewery and a pioneer of the local craft beer movement. Their brewery is located on Larkin Square, and features a bar and organized tours. Other notable spots include the previously mentioned RiverWorks, as well as Big Ditch, Community Beer Works, and Resurgence. The latter serves a wide array of rotating brews in its indoor/outdoor beer garden, including locally inspired flavors like the Imperial Sponge Candy Stout.

5. The Flourishing Local Art Galleries and Museums

Jay Galvin/Flickr

Visitors will quickly get a sense of Buffalo’s rich history by the array of museums on offer. The Albright-Knox Art Gallery boasts a world-class collection with alternating exhibitions. A more intimate experience can be had with local artists on the first Friday of each month with Allentown’s gallery walk, also known as “First Fridays.” The monthly event sees galleries, boutiques, and restaurants open their doors to the public for a night of live music, art exhibitions, and community bonding. More local work can be viewed at the Burchfield Penney Art Center, which is the only museum dedicated to exhibiting work exclusively made by Western New York artists. Beyond the art offerings, the Buffalo Transportation Pierce-Arrow Museum exhibits unique vehicles, like a 1902 electric carriage, as well as an impractical, yet lavish, gas station designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.

6. The Underrated Food Scene

https://www.instagram.com/p/Bi5IrDknb3V/

There is much more to the Buffalo food scene than Buffalo wings, though we will get to that later. One of the fastest-growing trends here is the food truck scene, which can be most easily accessed on Food Truck Tuesdays in Larkin Square . Larkin Square has emerged from its days as a soap company warehouse district, providing much needed public gathering and event space. Visitors and locals flock here on Tuesdays for the weekly event that features over 25 food trucks, multiple breweries, and live music. Heading uptown, the most exciting culinary happenings can be found on Hertel Avenue. Hertel has historically been a mainstay for traditional Italian cuisine, but has recently experienced a flood of ethnic and hip eateries. CRAVing is one of the pioneers for bringing the local food movement to the city, using meat and produce from local farms. Another recent arrival is Lloyd Taco Factory, which originated as one of Buffalo’s first successful food trucks. You can’t go wrong on Hertel, with dozens of neighboring restaurants, including Romeo & Juliets for pastries and Kostas for home-style Greek food.

7. And (Of Course) the Buffalo Wings!

JasonParis/Flickr

JasonParis/Flickr

While in Buffalo, you should drop the “Buffalo” and just call them wings. This flavorful food does in fact originate from Buffalo, specifically from Anchor Bar in 1964. The credit goes to Teressa Bellissimo, owner of Anchor Bar, who made the ingenious choice of frying a batch of chicken wings, and then tossing them in hot sauce. Wings are served with carrot and celery sticks as well as blue cheese dressing, so don’t you dare ask for Ranch! Though Anchor Bar prepares a variety of wing flavors today, the medium wings are the closest you’ll get to the original batch. Making the pilgrimage to Anchor Bar is a must if you only have time for one stop, but the Buffalo Wing Trail includes 11 other top-notch wing joints in and around Buffalo that offer their own take on Bellissimo’s creation. Wing fanatics should consider visiting during the Buffalo Wing Festival to sample some of the best local and national varieties.

Exploring the Holy Trinity of Buffalo Calories

By Brian Hayden

Published on April 25, 2024

visit buffalo niagara board

On a stretch of highway in the town of Tonawanda, just north of the city of Buffalo, three dining spots that serve some of America’s tastiest regional food specialties greet passing motorists. Within a few hundred feet, visitors can feast on charcoal broiled Sahlen’s hot dogs, Mineo & Sapio sausage, beef on weck sandwiches, creamy frozen custard, and Paula’s famous peanut sticks.

No exploration of classic Buffalo fare is complete without a stop at this stretch of Sheridan Drive between Belmont and Ashford Avenues, a spot one local wit dubbed “the holy trinity of Buffalo calories.”

Here’s our guide to making this iconic gastronomic pilgrimage.

visit buffalo niagara board

Ted’s Hot Dogs

2312 Sheridan Drive, Tonawanda, NY

When visitors first approach this portion of Sheridan Drive, they’ll often notice the smoky aroma of charcoal grilled hot dogs hanging in the air. That smell has been a mainstay of the neighborhood since 1948, when Ted’s Hot Dogs opened its first location outside of the city of Buffalo. The Sheridan restaurant is the “mothership,” according to Ted’s president Thecly Ortolani. It’s the longest-running location in the chain and sought out by out-of-town visitors when they visit Buffalo.

Some thought Thecly’s grandfather, Theodore “Ted” Liaros, was crazy when he purchased a plot of farmland out here all those years ago to build this location. But his decision to move here ultimately changed the course of Buffalo food history. In its earliest years as a hot dog stand underneath the Peace Bridge, Ted’s grilled its hot dogs on a flat top grill. It was only upon moving to Sheridan that Ted’s son, Spiro Liaros, noticed that a couple of other nearby roadside stands, Pat’s and Scime’s, grilled their hot dogs using charcoal. Ted’s adopted that method as well, ultimately outlasting its competitors and creating “the niche that differentiates us from the rest of the country,” Thecly Ortolani said.

Customers line up to place their order at the front grill, then watch as Ted’s grill masters deftly sear Sahlen’s hot dogs, footlongs, burgers, chicken, and Mineo & Sapio sausage over an open flame. Some order their hot dogs “extra charred,” as the charcoal grilling causes them to darken and snap open with an extra smoky flavor. Ask for the “works” on your hot dog – including Ted’s signature, housemade hot relish – and complete your meal with an order of onion rings, a recipe Ted’s modeled after a now defunct local restaurant, Garlock’s. Then wash it all down with a loganberry drink for an unrivaled experience of American roadside food.

Anderson’s Frozen Custard

2235 Sheridan Drive, Tonawanda, NY

Soon after Ted’s expanded to Sheridan, another roadside stand opened across the street and instantly developed its own following by selling creamy, frozen custard.

Carl and Greta Anderson saw the potential Sheridan Drive held when they opened their stand in 1953, according to their daughter, Holly. The pair had previously operated a stand along Kenmore Avenue, but business boomed after relocating to Tonawanda, as “America was getting built along Sheridan Drive,” Holly Anderson said. Families loved taking a Sunday drive back then to Sheridan for a cone, and to this day, lines often stretch out the door for a chocolate/vanilla twist made from Anderson’s special custard mix, a scoop of one of 32 homemade hard ice cream flavors, and roast beef sliced from a top round and served on a kummelweck roll, a kaiser roll covered in coarse salt and caraway seeds, that’s always referred to as “weck.”

Anderson’s proximity to Ted’s ultimately influenced its menu. When the Andersons were looking to expand beyond custard, they decided to avoid hamburgers and hot dogs since Ted’s had a lock on those items down the street. Instead, they started serving roast beef sandwiches in the 1960s, with Carl hand-slicing the beef himself for decades to make sure every sandwich was just right. In the six decades since, Anderson’s has carved out a niche as one of the region’s go-to spots for one of the Buffalo’s region’s iconic local dishes, beef on weck.

It’s no coincidence that Ted’s and Anderson’s can be found near each other throughout Erie County. According to Holly Anderson, Anderson’s often selected its new locations based on where Ted’s succeeded. A visit to Anderson’s flagship location, which has preserved and expanded its original 1950s structure, is a must for anyone who wants to experience a great American roadside custard stand.

visit buffalo niagara board

Paula’s Donuts

2319 Sheridan Drive, Tonawanda, NY

The first thing visitors notice when they walk into Paula’s Donuts is the sweet aroma of frosting, fry cakes, and coffee. Then their eyes naturally drift to the multi-level shelf behind the front counter that holds nearly three dozen different varieties of donuts. There are red velvet donuts for sale here, and headlights, and honeydips, and powder angels, and powder chocolate angels, and coconut cream, and sour cream, and angel cream. And then there are the peanut coated fry cakes that Paula’s has become renowned for: the peanut stick, the peanut cream, and the peanut jelly doughnut. Paula’s has become the torch bearer for the peanut stick, a Buffalo specialty popularized by longtime (and long-gone) Freddie’s Doughnuts generations ago.

This shop completed the trinity a little more than a decade ago, when owner Paula Huber moved her business from its original location on Kenmore Avenue to a new spot in a shopping plaza in between Ted’s and Anderson’s. Its hours, beginning at 7 a.m. daily, brought a breakfast crowd to this formerly lunch, dinner, and dessert centric stretch of highway.

From morning until night, the holy trinity of Buffalo calories buzzes with customers who converge on Sheridan Drive to try some of the tastiest and most unique foods found in Western New York.

'Any rental under 30 days not allowed': Some short-term rentals in the Town of Lewiston are banned

visit buffalo niagara board

LEWISTON, N.Y. (WKBW) — People are reacting to a new law in the Town of Lewiston banning short-term rentals. The town board voted 3-2 in favor of the ban earlier this week.

The Town Supervisor, Steve Broderick, said it bans short-term rentals, like Airbnbs in certain residential areas in the town.

Town officials said this comes after some neighbors voiced concerns about noise and some rentals not being kept up. Broderick said he voted against it because he felt there was a better way to deal with potential problems.

"I felt like we could allow them where we regulated them, regulated the number of them, regulated the activities that can go on there," said Broderick.

John Jacoby is one of the town councilmen who voted in favor of the ban after hearing about concerns about possible crime, garbage and noise.

Jacoby said that while short-term rentals are banned, people are still permitted to rent their properties long-term.

UB team receives funding to demonstrate effectiveness of ‘food-is-medicine’ in health care

Published April 18, 2024

A team of UB researchers has received funding from the American Heart Association (AHA) for research that will focus on the implementation of innovative food-prescription programs for older adults.

The AHA has awarded UB $400,000 for the 18-month project as part of the organization’s Health Care by Food initiative, which is leveraging research to build the evidence needed to show the clinical and cost-effectiveness of so-called “food-is-medicine” programs.

The AHA funding comes at a key time. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) earlier this year approved an amendment to New York State’s Medicaid 1115 waiver that enables the state to modify its Medicaid program to address the health disparities exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. The waiver paves the way for, among other things, investments in supporting strategies for improved access to food and nutrition, such as food-is-medicine programs.

The field of food-is-medicine is going to develop rapidly as other states, not just New York, have submitted Medicaid 1115 waivers, says Lucia Leone, associate professor in the Department of Community Health and Health Behavior, School of Public Health and Health Professions.

Leone is co-principal investigator on the AHA project with Jill Tirabassi, clinical assistant professor in the Department of Family Medicine, Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at UB.

“With the state’s Medicaid waiver approval, we know these programs are going to be coming down the pipeline in the next few years. Our aim is to look at three different types of food programs for adults over 65 in Western New York and develop ways to make them as user-friendly as possible,” Leone says.

“It is essential that we are able to quickly develop best practices for ensuring food prescription programs are successful at reaching the people who need them,” she adds. “This research will help practitioners who are looking to design food-prescription programs for their communities understand what works and what doesn’t.”

Food-is-medicine may be defined as providing healthy food resources to treat, manage and prevent specific chronic conditions in coordination with the health care sector.

Food-is-medicine programs often feature:

  • Medically tailored meals, which are often delivered to patients with diet-related health conditions or among those at high risk.
  • Produce prescription programs that integrate healthy food into a patient’s health care plan, enabling patients to better follow their health care team’s dietary advice.
  • And medically tailored groceries, which may include a selection of grocery items prescribed by a registered dietitian or nutritionist for patients with diet-related acute and chronic health conditions who can prepare food at home.

A total of 75 participants will be recruited for the study from primary care clinics at Erie County Medical Center (ECMC). Participants will be split into three groups of 25, each of which will receive a different food-related program over 12 weeks.

One group will receive a weekly credit redeemable at Massachusetts Avenue Project’s mobile produce market. Another group will have fresh produce boxes delivered to their homes via FreshFix, a local food-delivery company co-founded by Leone. And the third group will have medically tailored meal kits, with recipes to make several meals, delivered to their homes each week. The food-delivery partners will curate the items that are sent in each box, tailoring the contents to meet dietary restrictions, such as diabetes or food allergies.

The researchers will focus particularly on the successes and challenges of the implementation of the food-is-medicine programs. Toward that end, participants will receive surveys each week, which will help Leone and Tirabassi gauge whether people used the voucher or food they received. A community advisory board will also be set up to help oversee the project and provide insight into participants’ lived experiences and how those affect their ability to participate in these programs. For example, do they struggle with using smart phone apps and websites to customize the food they receive?

“Older adults face unique barriers with food and nutrition access,” Tirabassi says, explaining the focus on adults over 65. “They often have multiple chronic health conditions, have experienced life course changes — becoming a widower, for example — and are on a fixed income. Many people in this age also have mobility and transportation challenges.”

The AHA project is focused on food-prescription program usage and not health outcomes for a very simple reason, Tirabassi says. “We already know that diet-related changes can affect health outcomes.” But, she adds, “Food-prescription programs have not had very high utilization rates, and that is what we need to change.”

The Primary Care Research Institute in the Department of Family Medicine at the Jacobs School, which has expertise in healthy aging research, is also a partner on the project.
