The rate is $1.99 per minute, and charges are billed to the guest's on board Sail and Sign Card. Since all communication is via satellite, the charges apply to all calls including calling cards, credit cards, 800 toll-free numbers and collect calls.

Please Note:

  • The rate above applies to calls for when the ship is visiting Europe as well.
  • Parents can request for the Ship-to-Shore connection be deactivated by contacting the on board Guest Services desk.
  • The calls are charged to the 1st guest listed on the reservation.
  • Information and Instructions can be found in the ‘Ship’s Directory’ in the stateroom.

What happens if you get sick or injured (or bitten by a monkey) on a cruise ship

family emergency on cruise ship

  • Cruise ships can treat a wide range of illnesses and injuries on board.
  • Some onboard medical facilities look like urgent care centers, while others are more like doctor's offices.
  • Health insurance often does not cover medical care on cruises, but travel insurance might.

When Jennifer Lautenschlager woke up with sniffles and a headache last month, she canceled her plans and went to see the doctor. The nurse took her temperature – she had about a 102-degree fever – and ran some tests, and the doctor examined her, before sending her on her way with several prescriptions.

It was a largely normal sick visit, except the 51-year-old software engineer was on a cruise ship along the coast of Mexico.

Lautenschlager had been looking forward to going kayaking on a stop in Cabo San Lucas during her 15-day Panama Canal sailing with Norwegian Cruise Line. Instead, she spent most of the day in her cabin before visiting the ship's medical facility, where she was diagnosed with an upper respiratory infection.

"(The facility was like) what I would think a typical urgent care was," said Lautenschlager, who lives in the Atlanta area. "Like a decent, good urgent care."

"Each of our ships has a state-of-the-art onboard medical center staffed with highly qualified doctors and nurses, to provide care for both guests and crew while at sea," Norwegian said in its 2021 ESG report . "We follow guidelines for our medical facilities provided by CLIA in conjunction with the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP)."

Looking for cheap cruise bookings?: What travelers should know about finding deals

Planes carry medical kits: Here's why you may not rely on them in an emergency

Cruise ships are perhaps best known for amenities like buffets and swimming pools, but their medical facilities also have the capability to treat a wide range of illnesses and injuries, from common colds to heart attacks.

Here's what to know about getting sick or hurt on a cruise ship.

What are cruise ship medical facilities like?

Dr. Joe Scott, senior director of fleet medical operations at cruise line operator Carnival Corporation, said some of its ships' facilities look like urgent care centers passengers would find on land, while others on some of its larger vessels are bigger and more similar to doctor's offices. However, he noted that the facilities are generally set up like a typical emergency department.

Cruise line members of Cruise Lines International Association, the industry's leading trade group, worked with the ACEP "to develop and implement guidelines on cruise ship medical facilities," according to its website . Oceangoing CLIA member lines must follow them.

Scott, who is currently chair of the ACEP's Cruise Ship Medicine Section, said the guidelines are updated every couple of years.

The facilities are staffed by doctors and nurses, and the company's bigger ships may also have medical administrators, paramedics and health care assistants.

The ships also have alternate medical sites, as directed by the guidelines. "So, if the first medical center is compromised in any way, we have an alternative one so we can continue to provide treatment," said Scott, who oversees day-to-day operations for the company's North American brands, including Carnival Cruise Line, Princess Cruises and Holland America Line.

What can cruise ship medical facilities treat?

Carnival Corp. medical facilities can treat a variety of ailments, from rashes and earaches to heart attacks. "There really isn't (anything) we can't treat, at least for the first few hours," said Scott.

Doctors on the ship can prescribe medications to be dispensed and taken while on board, and treat serious illness either until passengers improve or as a stopgap measure until a passenger can be brought ashore, depending on the scenario. In the case of a heart attack, they can give patients thrombolytics – or "clot-busting drugs" – on board until they can get them to a cardiac catheterization lab, which the vessels do not have.

The cruise line operator has a formulary – a list of medications needed to treat most diagnoses made on the ships – and stocks the vessels with those, though supplies are limited given the finite storage on board.

The cruise ship environment can limit the team's capabilities in other ways, too. For example, the vessels have X-ray machines (medical staff are trained to operate radiology and lab equipment). But Scott said, "No one has really yet figured out how to put a CT scan on a ship that is moving through the ocean and have it work well."

And while all medical staff working on board are credentialed in their home countries, sometimes they need outside assistance.

Janice Mullin and her husband, Jeff, were waiting to tour caves as part of a shore excursion in Gibraltar during a 2012 cruise when a Barbary ape jumped up on a bench beside her. The animal reached for the band of her Timex watch, attempting to take it off her arm.

As she stood up, the ape bit her, leaving puncture wounds on her arm. "I tend to make light of most everything, so I said, 'It's no big deal,' " Mullin, now 77, said. "My husband said, 'No, I think you need to tell the tour guide,' and she absolutely freaked out."

The cruise line, Holland America, rushed her to the ship's medical facility. The doctor told Mullin he had never seen a monkey bite before, and the medical personnel called the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for guidance. They gave her several injections and put her on antibiotic and antiviral medications.

Mullin, who lives in Enid, Oklahoma, said the cruise line covered her medical expenses and she felt the care she received was "wonderful," though she picked up an undesirable souvenir. "I had this great big black spot on my arm ... it was probably about the size of a softball," she said. "I had my 15 minutes of fame, and people would say, 'Oh, there's the woman who got bit by the monkey.' "

Scott said situations like that are "not that frequent." He also noted that the company developed Health Operations Centers at the start of the pandemic, which are based in offices on shore and can provide support to those working onboard.

Carnival Corp. has agreements with multiple university medical centers to conduct consultations with specialists.

How do cruise ships get sick or injured people to shore?

Scott said how cruise ships get sick or injured passengers to shore depends in large part on "the weather, the location and the assets available."

If the ship has a stop coming up, they may wait until they can get to a port. If not, they consider what is nearby, or if the U.S. Coast Guard (or equivalent officials in other countries) are available to them, which can provide a helicopter evacuation, or by boat if they are closer to shore.

Cruise ship kids clubs: Here's everything to know

Planning a cruise?: Here are the documents and costs to keep in mind

Scott said they remove sick or injured passengers at ports the vast majority of the time, which is the "safest way to do it." Even if there are not medical facilities near a given port, there may be an airstrip, allowing the team to schedule a medevac aircraft to come meet the ship, Scott said.

Does insurance cover medical expenses on a cruise?

Many health insurance plans do not cover medical expenses incurred at sea or in foreign countries, Scott said. Carnival Corp. requires passengers to pay for those services, and they can then submit the receipts to their insurance company.

He said he is "not aware" of any cruise line that accepts insurance in its medical facilities, and highly recommended passengers purchase travel insurance, which he said is more likely to cover those bills.

Scott said a medical evacuation can cost tens of thousands of dollars, though the amount varies depending on the circumstances.

Lautenschlager's medical costs on Norwegian totaled $371.96, including medication, according to a receipt she shared with USA TODAY. She plans to submit the expenses to her travel insurance provider.

While a medical issue can put a damper on vacation, even Mullin, who was bitten by the monkey, still loves cruising. She sails two to three times a year with her husband.

"It hasn't deterred us any, the idea of being sick," she said. "Because that's life, people get sick."

Have you had a medical emergency during vacation? How was that experience?

How to Contact Someone on a Cruise Ship in an Emergency

how to contact someone on a cruise ship in an emergency

If you’re looking for a way to just escape the mundanities of everyday life, then a cruise vacation might be for you. Offering world class amenities aboard a luxury ship, cruise vacations can bring you to some of the most exotic destinations you can imagine.

And while the sights and sounds might take your mind off of things, there’s always going to be that worry at the back of your head - what if something goes wrong at home while you’re away? Don’t worry - here’s how to contact someone on a cruise ship in an emergency.

How Can You Contact Someone on a Cruise Ship?

So maybe you’re worried the kids might get into some trouble while you’re enjoying yourself on a cruise. There are a few ways they can get in touch with you even when you’re out at sea.

If you’re looking to find a way that’s relatively cheap or even free-of-charge , you can try Dial-a-Ship . This service connects the caller with any cruise liner around the globe, as long as they have the right information. To place a call with Dial-a-Ship, you need to provide the following information:

  • Name of the cruise and its route
  • Your family member's name
  • Their cabin number

Providing more information in more detail should make it easier for the service to locate the boat and the right person to call. They will usually connect you directly with the cabin, but services can change depending on the liner you’re hoping to contact.

For cruise ships that aren’t travelling too far from land, like 3-day cruises that just traverse the waters near the coast, you might not lose signal on board. In that case, your family should be able to contact your mobile phone as they usually would.

But what if there’s no signal, and the Dial-a-Ship service just isn’t working for you? Well, the cruise liner itself should have a contact hotline that your family members on dry land can reach. It’s important to make sure you find out the cruise ship’s number and leave it with your family before you set sail.

How Can You Call Another Cabin?

If you’re on the cruise with your family and you want to contact them in case of an emergency, you can reach them via their room phone. Use of the telephones in the staterooms is complimentary if you’re calling another cabin on the cruise. So you won’t have to worry about extra fees by placing that call.

Can You Call a Mobile Phone on a Cruise Ship?

That depends. We did mention that if the phone has reception out on the water, then you should still be able to contact it as you normally would. But for long distance cruises, there might be a need to put in a little extra effort to maintain that connectivity.

Here are some options for cruise guests who want to keep their phone accessible via call for people back at home:

Cruise Ship WiFi

Now, it’s not going to be cheap. But cruise ships always have WiFi that you can connect to for an added fee. They give you the option to just pay for a day, for a few weeks, or for your entire stay on the cruise.

International Services

Ask your mobile carrier if they offer international service that lets you maintain your reception even when you’re a ways from home. Again, it’s not going to be cheap, but if you regulate your usage and keep your phone on airplane mode when you don’t need it, it can be cheaper than cruise ship WiFi.

Travel WiFi

There are services that rent out or sell devices that let you connect to WiFi internationally. Their pocket WiFi modems can work in a number of locations, and charge far less than the WiFi you’ll find on your cruise ship.

How Much Does Cruise WiFi Cost?

If you’re looking to connect to the cruise ship WiFi, you have the option to pay for it along with your booking, or to avail of the service once you’re on board. Do not though as the rates can be crazy expensive.

Cruise ship WiFi fees change from cruise liner to cruise liner. But on average, you can expect to pay around $14.99 per day just to stay connected. Keep in mind that more expensive luxury liners can easily charge double that price.

Another thing to remember is that this fee typically doesn’t include access to everything on the internet. Their basic package will only let you check your emails and your messaging services. If you want to access social media applications, sports, news, video streaming and more, you might be looking at daily fees of over $24.99 a day.

A Call Away

Don’t forget to tell your family and friends how to contact someone on a cruise ship in an emergency. But more than that, see to is that you do what you can to keep your phone accessible. Although it might cost a pretty penny, being just a call away can help you stay on top of any emergencies back home.

Understanding the Importance of Emergency Protocols on Cruises

When it comes to going on a cruise, safety should always be a top priority. Understanding and adhering to emergency protocols is crucial for the well-being of everyone on board. Whether it’s a medical emergency, a fire, or even a potential pirate attack, cruise lines have comprehensive emergency protocols in place to ensure the safety and security of their passengers and crew members. By familiarizing yourself with these protocols and following them diligently, you can help maintain a safe environment for yourself and your fellow passengers.

Why safety measures are crucial

Safety measures on cruise ships are put in place to prevent accidents, respond effectively to emergencies, and ensure the overall well-being of everyone on board. From conducting thorough security checks prior to boarding to implementing fire safety measures and providing medical facilities, these protocols address a wide range of potential risks. By following safety measures, you can minimize the likelihood of accidents and navigate through any emergencies that may arise with confidence.

The legal responsibility of cruise lines

Cruise lines have a legal responsibility to ensure the safety of their passengers and crew members. They are required to adhere to industry regulations and standards to minimize risks and maintain a safe environment on board. Failure to comply with these regulations can result in significant consequences for the cruise line, including fines and legal repercussions. Therefore, cruise lines take emergency protocols seriously and invest in training, equipment, and resources to fulfill their legal obligations and prioritize the safety of their passengers.

Common concerns about maritime safety

Before embarking on a cruise, it’s natural to have concerns about safety at sea. Some common concerns include the potential for accidents, illnesses, fires, or even piracy. While these concerns are valid, it’s important to remember that the vast majority of cruises proceed without any major incidents . Cruise lines have comprehensive protocols and procedures in place to address these concerns swiftly and effectively, ensuring the safety and well-being of everyone on board.

Pre-boarding Safety Protocols

Security checks prior to boarding.

One of the first safety protocols you will encounter when arriving at the cruise terminal is the security check. This is an important measure to ensure that prohibited items, such as weapons or hazardous materials, are not brought on board. The security team will ask you to pass your bags through an x-ray machine and may conduct a physical search if necessary. By cooperating with the security personnel and following their instructions, you can help maintain a safe environment for everyone on board.

Importance of providing accurate health information

Providing accurate health information is crucial for the safety of yourself and others on the cruise. Before boarding, you may be required to fill out a health questionnaire. It’s important to be truthful about any pre-existing medical conditions or recent illnesses. This information helps the onboard medical team to be prepared and provide appropriate care if needed. Failure to provide accurate health information can jeopardize not only your own safety but also the safety of others on board.

The role of pre-boarding safety briefings

Most cruise lines conduct pre-boarding safety briefings to familiarize passengers with emergency procedures and protocols. These briefings are typically held in a designated area, such as a lounge or theater, and are mandatory for all passengers. During the briefing, crew members will demonstrate the proper use of life jackets, explain the location of the muster stations, and provide information on emergency evacuation procedures. It is essential to pay attention during these briefings and ask any questions you may have to ensure you are well-prepared for any potential emergencies.

Emergency Protocols On Cruises: What You Should Know

General Safety Measures On Cruise Ships

Constant surveillance and patrols.

Cruise ships utilize surveillance cameras and employ security personnel to monitor the ship and its surroundings continuously. This constant surveillance helps detect and prevent any potential security threats or safety hazards. Additionally, crew members perform regular patrols throughout public areas and cabins to ensure the safety and well-being of passengers. By maintaining a visible presence and promptly addressing any concerns, cruise lines strive to create a secure environment for everyone on board.

Availability of medical facilities and personnel onboard

Every cruise ship is equipped with medical facilities and has a dedicated medical team on board. These facilities are staffed by qualified medical professionals who are trained to handle a wide range of medical emergencies. The medical team can provide immediate care for minor injuries or illnesses and are prepared to respond to more serious situations. In case of an emergency, it is reassuring to know that medical help is readily available on board.

Onboard security measures for personal safety

Cruise ships implement various security measures to ensure the personal safety of their passengers. This can include measures such as access control systems, security personnel stationed at key locations, and the presence of CCTV cameras. These security measures not only deter potential threats but also allow cruise lines to quickly respond to any security issues that may arise. By following the onboard security guidelines and reporting any suspicious activities, you can play an active role in maintaining a safe environment for yourself and others on board.

Fire safety measures and equipment

Fire safety is a major concern on any ship, including cruise ships. To prevent fires, cruise lines employ strict policies such as regular maintenance of electrical systems and fire prevention measures. In the event of a fire, cruise ships are equipped with state-of-the-art fire detection systems that can quickly identify the location of the fire and trigger appropriate responses. Additionally, crew members are trained in firefighting techniques and are ready to respond to any fire emergencies. Fire safety equipment, including fire extinguishers and sprinkler systems, is strategically placed throughout the ship. By familiarizing yourself with the location of these safety measures and following the instructions provided during the pre-boarding safety briefings, you can help ensure a swift and effective response in case of a fire emergency.

Emergency Evacuation Procedures

How are evacuations handled.

In the rare event that an evacuation is necessary, cruise lines have well-established procedures in place to ensure the safe and orderly evacuation of passengers and crew members. These procedures are carefully planned and take into account factors such as weather conditions, the location of the nearest shores, and the availability of life-saving equipment. The crew will provide clear instructions and guide passengers to designated muster stations where further instructions will be given.

Importance of muster stations

Muster stations are designated areas on the ship where passengers gather during an emergency. These stations are strategically located throughout the ship and are easily identifiable by their signage. During the pre-boarding safety briefings, the location of your assigned muster station will be highlighted. It is essential to familiarize yourself with your muster station’s location and follow the instructions provided during an emergency. Muster stations serve as assembly points from where passengers will be directed to lifeboats or other means of emergency evacuation.

Lifeboats and life jackets: availability and usage

Cruise ships are equipped with an adequate number of lifeboats to accommodate all passengers and crew members in case of an emergency. Life jackets are also readily available in each cabin or can be obtained from designated locations on the ship. During the pre-boarding safety briefing, the proper usage of life jackets will be demonstrated. It is crucial to understand how to properly wear a life jacket and where it is located in your cabin. In the event of an evacuation, it is important to remain calm, follow instructions, and ensure that you have your life jacket with you.

What happens during ‘Abandon Ship’ order

In extreme circumstances, the captain may issue an ‘Abandon Ship’ order, indicating that all passengers and crew members must leave the ship immediately. This order is typically given when remaining on board becomes too dangerous or the ship is sinking. In such instances, it is crucial to follow the instructions given by the crew and proceed to the nearest lifeboat or designated evacuation point. It is important to remain calm, assist others if possible, and avoid panic during this critical phase of the emergency.

Emergency Protocols On Cruises: What You Should Know

In Case of Fire: Fire Emergency Protocols

Fire detection and prevention measures.

To prevent fires on board, cruise lines implement several measures, including regular maintenance of electrical systems and strict adherence to fire safety regulations. Cruise ships are equipped with advanced fire detection systems that can quickly identify the location of a fire and trigger emergency responses. Additionally, proper storage and handling of flammable materials are enforced to minimize the risk of fires. By taking these preventive measures, cruise lines aim to provide a safe environment for their passengers and crew members.

Firefighting equipment and crew training

Cruise ships are equipped with a wide range of firefighting equipment, including fire extinguishers, fire hoses, and fire blankets. These equipment are strategically placed throughout the ship and easily accessible in case of a fire emergency. Crew members are trained periodically in firefighting techniques and are ready to respond promptly and efficiently to any fires that may occur on board. Their training enables them to use the firefighting equipment effectively and coordinate evacuation procedures if necessary.

Evacuation in case of fires

In the event of a fire emergency, it may be necessary to evacuate certain areas of the ship or even the entire vessel. Cruise lines have well-established evacuation procedures in place to ensure the safety of all passengers and crew members. These procedures involve directing passengers to designated evacuation routes and muster stations. It is important to remain calm, follow instructions, and proceed to your assigned muster station or designated evacuation point. By familiarizing yourself with the evacuation procedures during the pre-boarding safety briefing, you can be better prepared to respond in case of a fire emergency.

Medical Emergencies Onboard

Immediate steps during medical emergencies.

Medical emergencies can happen at any time, and cruise ships are prepared to handle them promptly and effectively. If you or someone else requires immediate medical attention, it is crucial to alert the nearest crew member or call the onboard medical facility. The onboard medical team is trained to respond to emergencies and will provide the necessary medical care. It is important to stay calm, provide accurate information about the medical emergency, and follow the instructions of the medical team.

Roles of the onboard medical team

The onboard medical team is comprised of qualified medical professionals who are equipped to handle a wide range of medical emergencies. These professionals include doctors, nurses, and other trained medical staff. They are available 24/7 and can provide medical care for various illnesses, injuries, or emergencies that may arise on board. It is important to remember that the onboard medical team’s primary responsibility is the health and safety of all passengers and crew members.

Protocols for medical evacuation by helicopter

In more serious medical emergencies, it may be necessary to evacuate a patient from the ship by helicopter. Cruise lines have protocols in place to coordinate medical evacuations with the appropriate authorities and ensure the safe transfer of the patient to a medical facility ashore. Medical evacuations are rare but are a crucial measure to ensure the well-being and appropriate medical care for individuals in critical condition. By following the instructions of the onboard medical team and cooperating during a medical evacuation, you can help ensure the best possible outcome for the patient in need.

Emergency Protocols On Cruises: What You Should Know

Man Overboard: Procedures and Policies

What happens after a ‘man overboard’ alarm.

In the event of a ‘man overboard’ alarm, cruise lines have comprehensive protocols in place to locate and rescue the individual as quickly as possible. The alarm triggers an immediate response from the crew, who will initiate search and rescue procedures. These procedures may involve deploying lifebuoys, conducting thorough searches of the ship, and notifying nearby vessels and authorities. Additionally, the ship’s navigation systems and cameras can be utilized to assist in locating the individual who has fallen overboard.

Rescue procedures and equipment used

Cruise ships are equipped with dedicated rescue equipment and have trained crew members who are proficient in rescue procedures. These procedures may involve deploying lifeboats, rescue boats, or inflatable rafts, depending on the circumstances. Crew members are trained to execute search and rescue missions safely and efficiently. Timely execution of rescue procedures increases the chances of successfully locating and recovering a person who has fallen overboard.

Post-rescue procedures

After a successful rescue, the individual who has fallen overboard will receive medical attention and evaluation from the onboard medical team. The crew will also conduct an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident and implement any necessary measures to prevent similar situations in the future. Post-rescue procedures are essential in ensuring that the individual is provided with appropriate care and that lessons are learned to enhance safety.

Pirate Attacks: Preparation and Response

How cruise lines prepare for potential pirate attacks.

While pirate attacks are rare, cruise lines take precautions to minimize the risk and ensure the safety of their passengers and crew members. These precautions include monitoring relevant intelligence sources, implementing measures to deter pirates, and conducting regular security drills. Cruise ships can alter their routes or increase their speed to avoid areas of concern. Additionally, cruise lines have established communication protocols with international naval forces to seek assistance if necessary.

Response strategies and communication during an attack

In the event of a pirate attack, cruise lines have designated response strategies and communication protocols in place. These strategies involve actions such as activating security teams, implementing evasive maneuvers, and initiating distress calls to relevant authorities. Communication with passengers during an attack is strictly managed to prevent panic and ensure that passengers follow crew instructions. By following crew instructions and remaining calm, passengers can contribute to a coordinated and effective response.

Post-attack procedures

After a pirate attack, cruise lines conduct thorough investigations to understand the incident and identify any areas for improvement in their security protocols. Lessons learned from each attack are used to enhance future security measures and ensure the safety of passengers and crew members. Cruise lines also work closely with relevant law enforcement agencies to provide any necessary support and assist with the investigation.

Emergency Protocols On Cruises: What You Should Know

Emergency Drills: Role and Importance

Why regular drills are conducted.

Regular emergency drills are conducted on cruise ships to ensure that passengers and crew members are familiar with emergency procedures and can respond effectively in case of an emergency. These drills allow individuals to practice the correct use of safety equipment, familiarize themselves with the locations of emergency exits and muster stations, and understand the guidance provided by the crew. By participating in these drills, you can gain confidence in your ability to respond appropriately during an actual emergency situation.

Role of a passenger in these drills

Passengers play a vital role in emergency drills by actively participating and following the instructions provided by the crew. It is important to take these drills seriously and listen attentively to the information provided. By following the guidance of the crew, you can familiarize yourself with the location of the nearest emergency exits, muster stations, and the proper use of safety equipment. Remember, these drills are conducted for your safety, and your active participation can contribute to a successful response during a real emergency.

How drills prepare you for real emergencies

Emergency drills are designed to simulate real emergency situations and provide hands-on experience in responding to various scenarios. By participating in drills, you can become familiar with the actions you need to take, understand the importance of remaining calm, and practice evacuation procedures. These drills help build muscle memory, allowing you to respond more efficiently and confidently during an actual emergency. Additionally, drills create a culture of preparedness among passengers and crew members, promoting a safer onboard environment for everyone.

Passenger’s Role in Maintaining Safety Onboard

How to follow safety guidelines.

As a passenger, it is important to follow the safety guidelines provided by the cruise line. These guidelines may include rules regarding the use of safety equipment, restrictions on certain activities, and behavioral expectations. By adhering to these guidelines, you contribute to maintaining a safe environment for yourself and others on board. It is also essential to report any safety concerns or suspicious activities to the crew, as your awareness can play a crucial role in preventing incidents and ensuring the overall safety of the ship.

What to do in different kinds of emergencies

In different emergency situations, it is important to remain calm and follow the instructions provided by the crew. During a fire, for example, you should seek an emergency exit, proceed to your designated muster station, and use the provided safety equipment as instructed. In the event of a medical emergency, promptly alert the nearest crew member or call for medical assistance, providing accurate information about the situation. By understanding the specific protocols for each type of emergency, you can act accordingly and help minimize risks and promote safety.

Why understanding these protocols can save lives

Understanding emergency protocols on cruises is essential because it can save lives. By familiarizing yourself with the emergency procedures and guidelines, you are better equipped to respond effectively and efficiently in case of an emergency. Knowing the location of emergency exits, muster stations, and the proper use of safety equipment can make a significant difference in critical situations. By taking the time to learn and understand these protocols, you play an active role in maintaining the safety and well-being of yourself and others on board.

Throughout, you’ll learn about the steps to take and the resources available to you. Whether it’s a minor issue or something more serious, you’ll have the knowledge to handle it with confidence and get the appropriate care you need while enjoying your vacation.

Table of Contents

Emergency medical services on cruise ships

When you embark on a cruise ship vacation, the last thing you expect is to experience a medical emergency. However, it is important to be prepared and know what steps to take in case such a situation arises. Cruise ships have a range of emergency medical services and facilities to handle various medical emergencies, ensuring the safety and well-being of their passengers.

Availability of medical staff

Cruise ships employ trained medical professionals who are available 24/7 to provide medical assistance to passengers. These medical staff members are typically doctors and nurses with the necessary qualifications and experience to handle a wide range of medical emergencies. They are equipped to handle anything from minor illnesses and injuries to more serious medical conditions.

Types of medical emergencies that can be treated onboard

Cruise ships have medical facilities and equipment that allow for the treatment of various medical emergencies. These can include but are not limited to:

  • Seasickness and motion sickness
  • Minor injuries such as sprains and cuts
  • Respiratory problems and asthma attacks
  • Gastrointestinal issues like food poisoning and stomach viruses
  • Cardiac emergencies such as heart attacks and arrhythmias
  • Allergic reactions and anaphylaxis
  • Infections and fevers

It is important to note that not all medical emergencies can be treated onboard. In such cases, the ship’s medical staff will provide initial treatment and stabilize the passenger before arranging for emergency evacuation to a shore-based medical facility.

Equipment and facilities available for medical emergencies

Cruise ships are equipped with medical centers that are typically staffed by experienced medical professionals. These centers are equipped with essential medical equipment such as defibrillators, EKG machines, ultrasound machines, and basic laboratory facilities for immediate diagnosis and treatment. In addition, cruise ships are required to have a well-stocked pharmacy on board to provide necessary medications to passengers.

Steps to take in case of a medical emergency

Nobody wants to find themselves in a medical emergency situation while on a cruise ship, but if it does happen, it is important to stay calm and take the necessary steps to ensure prompt and appropriate medical care.

Stay calm and assess the situation

The first and most important step is to stay calm and assess the situation. Try to determine the severity of the medical emergency and if immediate medical attention is required. If the situation is life-threatening or requires immediate assistance, do not hesitate to call for help.

Call the ship’s emergency number

Each cruise ship has a designated emergency phone number that should be dialed in case of a medical emergency. This number will connect you to the ship’s medical staff who will provide guidance and assistance. Make sure to provide them with accurate information about the patient’s condition and location on the ship to facilitate a prompt response.

Provide necessary information to the medical staff

When you reach out to the ship’s medical staff, it is important to provide them with all the necessary information. This can include details about the patient’s medical history, any pre-existing conditions, current symptoms, and any medications they may be taking. This information will help the medical staff determine the most appropriate course of action and provide effective treatment.

What Do I Do If I Have A Medical Emergency On A Cruise Ship?

Medical treatment options

Cruise ships have various medical treatment options available to passengers in case of a medical emergency. These options are designed to provide immediate medical care and ensure the well-being of the passengers.

Onboard medical center

The onboard medical center is the first line of defense in case of a medical emergency. These centers are staffed by trained medical professionals who can diagnose and treat a wide range of medical conditions. The medical staff will assess the patient’s condition and provide the necessary treatment. They can administer medications, perform minor procedures, and stabilize the patient until further care is available.

Telemedicine consultations

In some cases, the ship’s medical staff may consult with specialists on land via telemedicine. This allows them to seek expert advice and guidance in complex medical cases. The telemedicine consultation can help the medical staff make informed decisions and provide the best possible care to the patient.

Emergency evacuation to a shore-based medical facility

If a medical emergency cannot be adequately treated onboard, the ship’s medical staff will arrange for emergency evacuation to a shore-based medical facility. This may involve transferring the patient to a nearby port where they can receive more specialized care. Cruise lines have established relationships with hospitals and medical facilities in various ports to ensure a smooth transition and continuity of care.

Cruise ship medical expenses

Facing a medical emergency can be stressful, and the financial aspect adds to the anxiety. However, cruise lines have procedures in place to manage medical expenses and ensure passengers receive the necessary care without undue financial burden.

Insurance coverage

It is highly recommended to have travel insurance that includes medical coverage when embarking on a cruise vacation. Travel insurance can help cover the cost of medical treatment, including consultations, medications, and emergency evacuation if necessary. Make sure to review your insurance policy beforehand to understand the coverage and any exclusions.

Payment options

When seeking medical treatment onboard a cruise ship, you may be required to provide payment upfront. The medical center typically accepts major credit cards and cash for payment. It is important to keep all receipts and documentation for insurance reimbursement purposes.

Reimbursement procedures

After receiving medical treatment onboard or at a shore-based facility, you may need to file a claim for reimbursement with your travel insurance provider. This generally involves submitting relevant documentation, such as medical reports, receipts, and invoices. It is important to keep copies of all documents and follow the insurance company’s procedures for claim submission.

What Do I Do If I Have A Medical Emergency On A Cruise Ship?

Implementation of COVID-19 protocols

In light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, cruise lines have implemented stringent protocols to mitigate the risk of transmission and ensure the safety of passengers and crew members. These protocols have had an impact on the medical emergency response onboard.

Precautionary measures taken by cruise lines

Cruise lines have implemented various precautionary measures to minimize the risk of COVID-19 transmission onboard. These measures can include health screenings, temperature checks, enhanced sanitation and cleaning procedures, social distancing measures, and mandatory mask-wearing in certain areas. These measures help create a safe environment for passengers and reduce the risk of medical emergencies related to COVID-19.

COVID-19 testing and isolation protocols

Cruise ships have established protocols for COVID-19 testing and isolation in case a passenger or crew member shows symptoms or tests positive for the virus. Isolation areas are designated onboard, and medical staff provide appropriate care and monitoring for affected individuals. These protocols ensure the safety of both the individual and the rest of the passengers and crew.

Impact on medical emergency response

The implementation of COVID-19 protocols has impacted the medical emergency response on cruise ships. Delays in medical care may occur due to additional screening and testing procedures. However, cruise lines are committed to prioritizing the health and safety of passengers and have adapted their protocols to provide timely and appropriate medical care in these challenging circumstances.

Communication and coordination with onboard staff

During a medical emergency, communication and coordination with the ship’s staff are crucial for prompt and efficient medical care.

Interaction with medical staff

When seeking medical assistance, you will interact with the ship’s medical staff. It is important to provide accurate and detailed information about the patient’s condition and medical history. Ask questions and seek clarification to ensure you fully understand the recommended treatment plan and any necessary follow-up care.

Coordinating with guest services and security personnel

In some cases, coordination with other onboard personnel may be required. Guest services and security personnel may be involved in assisting with medical emergencies, such as notifying the necessary parties and facilitating communication between the passenger, medical staff, and shore-based medical facilities. Cooperation and clear communication with the onboard staff can help streamline the process and ensure timely assistance.

Updates and communication with family and friends

During a medical emergency, it is important to keep your family and friends informed about the situation. Most cruise ships offer communication services such as internet access, phone calls, and messaging platforms that allow you to provide updates and receive support from your loved ones. This can help ease anxiety and provide emotional support during a challenging time.

What Do I Do If I Have A Medical Emergency On A Cruise Ship?

Accessibility and assistance for passengers with disabilities

Cruise ships strive to provide accessible facilities and assistance for passengers with disabilities. This includes accommodations for individuals with mobility impairments, visual or hearing impairments, and other specific needs.

Adapted medical facilities

Cruise ships have adapted medical facilities to accommodate passengers with disabilities. These facilities may have wider entrances, accessible exam rooms, and appropriate equipment to ensure the comfort and safety of all passengers.

Arrangements for mobility-impaired passengers

Cruise lines have procedures in place to assist passengers with mobility impairments in case of a medical emergency. This includes trained staff who can provide necessary assistance and accommodations to ensure the passenger’s safety and well-being during the emergency response.

Guidelines for passengers with specific medical conditions

Passengers with specific medical conditions should consult with their healthcare providers before embarking on a cruise vacation. It is important to follow any guidelines or recommendations provided by your healthcare provider to manage your condition during the trip. Carry all necessary medications, medical devices, and supplies to ensure you have everything you need in case of an emergency.

Special considerations for traveling with medication

If you need to travel with medication, it is essential to plan and prepare accordingly to avoid any issues during your cruise vacation.

Packing medications and prescriptions

When packing medications, make sure to bring an adequate supply for the duration of your trip, including any potential delays. Pack your medications in your carry-on luggage to ensure they are easily accessible. It is also a good idea to carry copies of your prescriptions and a medication list that includes dosage instructions.

Storage and refrigeration of medications

Certain medications may require special storage or refrigeration. Check with your healthcare provider or pharmacist for specific instructions on how to store your medications during the trip. Cruise ships typically have facilities available for storing medications that require refrigeration.

Dealing with customs and security screenings

When going through customs and security screenings, it is important to declare any medications you are carrying with you. Keep your medications in their original packaging, and if necessary, carry a letter from your healthcare provider explaining the need for the medications. Familiarize yourself with the customs regulations of the countries you will be visiting to ensure compliance with their requirements.

What Do I Do If I Have A Medical Emergency On A Cruise Ship?

Preventive measures to avoid medical emergencies

While cruise ships have medical services and facilities in place to handle emergencies, it is always best to take preventive measures to avoid such situations.

Maintaining personal hygiene

Practicing good hygiene habits can help prevent the spread of infections. Wash your hands frequently with soap and water or use hand sanitizer when soap is not available. Avoid touching your face and follow respiratory hygiene practices, such as covering your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.

Following safety guidelines and precautions

Cruise ships have safety guidelines and precautions in place to ensure the well-being of passengers. Familiarize yourself with these guidelines and follow them diligently. These may include safety drills, wearing appropriate footwear on deck, and adhering to designated areas for specific activities.

Being aware of individual health conditions

If you have any pre-existing medical conditions, it is important to be aware of your limitations and take necessary precautions. Follow your healthcare provider’s advice, carry necessary medications and supplies, and inform the ship’s medical staff about your condition. By being proactive and prepared, you can help prevent medical emergencies and enjoy a safe cruise vacation.

Facing a medical emergency on a cruise ship can be a daunting experience, but being prepared and knowing the necessary steps to take can help ensure prompt and efficient treatment. Cruise ships have trained medical staff and well-equipped medical centers to handle most emergencies, and communication channels with onboard personnel and shore-based facilities are established for a coordinated response. By understanding the protocols, insurance coverage, and assistance options available, passengers can have peace of mind while enjoying their cruise vacation. Remember to stay calm, seek help when needed, and follow the guidance of the medical professionals onboard. Your health and well-being are a top priority for cruise lines, and they are dedicated to providing the necessary care and support in case of a medical emergency.

How do I contact a friend or family member aboard a Celebrity cruise ship?

For all Celebrity ships: • Dial: 1-877-266-1020(applicable country code)+1-321-953-9002 (outside the United States) • Dial the appropriate number above.  • The caller will be asked to enter the credit card number and expiration date.  • The system obtains a real-time hold for $79.50 ($7.95 x 10 minutes) and initiates the call to the ship. The $79.50 hold is the maximum that will be held. Actual charges will be calculated based on the number of minutes used on the call.  • A voice prompt directs the caller to the specific ship.  • The call is connected to the ship.  • The call rings through to the designated department onboard (Radio Station or Purser Desk). The call is then routed to the guest's stateroom.  • The PBX monitors the call. If there is no answer, the call will ring back at the designated department onboard (Radio Station or Purser Desk) and a written message is taken for delivery to the guest's stateroom.

Cruise ship lifeboats and rafts: How your ship is prepared for an emergency

Do cruise ships have enough lifeboats for everyone?

It’s a question that comes to many cruisers’ minds, especially if they’re hesitant about sailing across oceans and seas, far from land.

You can rest assured that cruise lines have many safety systems in place in the rare instance that a major emergency occurs at sea. Among these systems are, of course, the brightly colored lifeboats that you’ll see lining the sides of your ship. Not only are they there to carry passengers to safety if the ship needs to be abandoned, but they’re also used as tender boats in a port where the ship can’t dock at a pier.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG’s cruise newsletter .

You may have other questions about lifeboats, either from curiosity or safety concerns. How reliable are the small vessels? What supplies are on board? Do they have restrooms?

Here are the top things to know about cruise ship lifeboats, so you’ll feel safe and confident when heading out on your next voyage.

What does a lifeboat look like?

Lifeboats are orange or yellow watercraft that you’ll find lining the sides of the ship. You’ll find two main types of lifeboats on many cruise ships: enclosed lifeboats and lifeboat tenders. The majority of cruise ship lifeboats are enclosed lifeboats, which are tough and built with superior watertight integrity, with the ability to easily right themselves if tossed around by rough waves.

Lifeboat tenders are partially enclosed and are designed for two main functions: to serve as a lifeboat if needed and to ferry guests from the ship to the shore during a port call where the vessel can’t dock. Lifeboat tenders are more expensive to maintain than traditional lifeboats, so cruise ships will usually have just enough lifeboat tenders to operate port tender service while the rest are the standard enclosed lifeboats.

The interior of a lifeboat includes rows of seating, which may or may not have a seatback. A steering area with windows and a hatch is located toward the top of the vessel. According to lifeboat manufacturer Fassmer, enclosed lifeboats have no windows besides those in the steering area, while lifeboat tenders have windows for viewing the surroundings from the seats. These windows do not open.

Fun fact: When Disney Cruise Line launched in the ‘90s, regulations required all cruise ship lifeboats to be orange. However, Disney wanted the exteriors of its ships to match the colors of Mickey Mouse, so it requested an exemption to paint its lifeboats yellow to match Mickey’s shoes.

The U.S. Coast Guard granted the unique request, and the lifeboats were painted in Mickey’s yellow, Pantone 99, which is a patented color that only Disney can use. Since then, other lines, such as Royal Caribbean and Costa Cruises , have painted their lifeboats yellow.

What’s the typical capacity of cruise ship lifeboats?

The maximum capacity of a cruise ship lifeboat is 150 people, according to the International Maritime Organization’s International Life-Saving Appliance Code. Most cruise ships have lifeboats that can hold this maximum number of passengers because it is easier, more cost-effective and takes up less space to have fewer large lifeboats instead of a greater number of smaller ones.

Despite the LSA’s 150-person capacity limit for lifeboats, an exception allows for larger lifeboats on some of the world’s largest cruise ships.

Royal Caribbean’s massive Oasis of the Seas, which holds 8,880 passengers and crew members in total, was the first ship to use 370-person CRV55 catamaran lifeboats (or “rescue vessels”), designed and built by marine life-saving equipment company Umoe Schat-Harding. The enclosed vessels are unique in that they can be lowered directly from their storage position on the ship into the water (no moving outward needed), and passengers can board on two levels simultaneously, reducing the loading time. Their catamaran-style hull increases stability, while twin diesel engines and twin propellers allow these “mega” lifeboats to move at speeds of up to 6 knots.

On a cruise ship, there must be enough lifeboats to accommodate 37.5% of passengers and crew members on either side (75% total), according to the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea. What happens to the other 25%? This leads us to our next question.

Do cruise ships carry inflatable life rafts?

The remaining 25% of passengers that can’t be accommodated in the traditional lifeboats can use cruise ship inflatable life rafts. These are generally designated for crew members, while guests will board the lifeboats first — though rafts can also be used for guests if necessary.

Collapsible cruise ship life rafts are stored in fiberglass canisters and usually utilize a high-pressure gas to automatically inflate once deployed. While lifeboats have motors, life rafts do not. They do, however, have oars. Ships may also carry rigid, noninflatable life rafts, but they aren’t as common for large cruise vessels.

On newer cruise ships, life rafts may be used with a Marine Evacuation System, which utilizes a fully enclosed inflatable spiral slide to transfer passengers from the embarkation deck to an automatically inflated raft in the water.

If some lifeboats become damaged or can’t be lowered during an emergency, cruise ships have extra life rafts to pick up the slack. SOLAS requires that there are enough additional life rafts for 25% of the ship’s capacity. Cruise ships have also been designed to allow lifeboats and life rafts to deploy even if the ship is listing up to 20 degrees.

Where are lifeboats located on cruise ships?

Lifeboats are located outside on both sides of the cruise ship, typically stored on or just above one of the middle decks with an outdoor promenade so passengers can easily board them. This spot is ideal because it’s a central location for both the upper- and lower-deck cabins, as well as many public indoor and outdoor venues and amenities.

It also works because it keeps the lifeboats high enough out of the water that they won’t be in the way when the ship docks and most likely won’t be affected by rough waves. On the flip side, it keeps them low enough that they don’t have to be lowered the entire height of the ship (plus, no one wants a lifeboat view from the lido pool or their upper-deck suite).

In an emergency, passengers should not head directly to the lifeboats. Instead, every cabin is assigned an assembly station, where they will meet with crew members and be escorted to a lifeboat if an evacuation is deemed necessary. Passengers must attend a muster drill to identify their assembly station and learn about their ship’s emergency procedures. These drills must take place before a cruise ship can set sail.

What can be found on a lifeboat?

While this list is not exhaustive, here’s most of what you’ll find on a cruise ship lifeboat, according to the LSA:

  • Enough fuel to travel at 6 knots for at least a full day (24 hours)
  • 48 hours’ worth of anti-seasickness medication per person
  • 2 seasickness bags per person
  • 3 liters of fresh water per person
  • 2,390 calories’ worth of food rations per person
  • Life jackets
  • Enough thermal protective aid suits for 10% of the lifeboat’s capacity
  • Three can openers
  • First aid supplies
  • Buoyant oars
  • Illuminated compass
  • Hand and parachute flares
  • Smoke signals
  • Survival manual
  • One whistle
  • One jackknife
  • One searchlight that can work continuously for at least three hours
  • Portable fire extinguishing equipment
  • Fishing gear
  • Tools to repair the engine

Do lifeboats have bathrooms?

Traditional 150-person lifeboats don’t have toilet facilities, but the 370-person catamaran lifeboats used on Royal Caribbean’s Oasis-class ships do.

What are other requirements for lifeboats on cruise ships?

Cruise ship lifeboats must be made of noncombustible and flame-retardant materials, according to SOLAS. Modern lifeboats are usually made of fiberglass.

All seating on the lifeboat must support a person weighing a minimum of 220 pounds. In addition, the lifeboats and the wires that move them up and down must be strong enough to allow the lifeboat to be lowered at full capacity.

How are lifeboats tested?

During the manufacturing process, lifeboats are tested using water weights, which can mimic the weight of passengers in various spots around the vessel. These water weights are pumped to fill and drain with water remotely. They’re placed in various spots in the lifeboat throughout the testing period to gather data on how the watercraft would handle passenger weight in various locations and scenarios.

Once a lifeboat is delivered to the shipyard for installation on a ship, the inspections and tests do not stop. Throughout the life of the cruise ship, time, weather and use all mean that — like with any type of equipment — things on the lifeboats will degrade and endure wear and tear over time. This is why SOLAS includes requirements for regular lifeboat drills and inspections.

Related: 15 cruise ship rules you shouldn’t break

Cruise crew members conduct weekly and monthly lifeboat inspections and undergo periodic training so lifeboat operations stay fresh in their minds.

A more thorough inspection — by either a certified lifeboat technician from an independent company or an inspector from the lifeboat manufacturer itself — occurs annually. According to the International Maritime Organization, this process includes an inspection of these key components:

  • The hull is inspected for cracks, damage or other defects.
  • The propulsion system, including the engine, is inspected to ensure it’s in good working condition. The cooling, exhaust and fuel systems are also examined.
  • The electrical system, including the battery, charging, lighting and communications systems, are checked for defects or malfunctions.
  • The maneuvering system is inspected, including the steering mechanism, the rudder and other steering gear.
  • Lifeboat equipment, such as life jackets and survival equipment, is examined to ensure it’s in good condition.
  • The davit and winch system, including the winch and wire ropes, are checked for defects or damage.
  • The lifeboat undergoes a load test to ensure that it can withstand its maximum weight of crew and passengers.

Any equipment or systems found to have defects or deficiencies during the inspection are either repaired or replaced.

Bottom line

The chances of passengers ever experiencing an emergency on a cruise that requires abandoning ship via lifeboats is extremely slim. Still, it’s good to know your ship is outfitted with safety equipment to give you peace of mind when taking your next cruise.

Rhode Island children stuck in Mexico after cruise emergency begin journey home

by LEANNA FAULK, NBC 10 NEWS

Two Rhode Island children are stranded in Mexico after a medical emergency abroad a cruise ship. (Martin Family)

Two Rhode Island children stuck in Mexico , are now on their way home.

Mother Sarah Martin said she is heading down to Florida to reunite with her children after a spring break trip gone wrong.

Martin's two kids, 6-year-old Emily and Gabriel who is 8, were stranded in Mexico for several days after their grandmother suffered a medical emergency on a cruise.

Neither of the children had passports, leaving Martin with limited options to get her children home.

Mike Spremulli with Captain Cruise and Crew said the family's unfortunate situation should serve as a lesson.

"You cannot fly back to the country. So it creates a pretty, pretty serious problem," said Spremulli.

From illness, to injuries or even something with the ship, anything they can happen.

  • MORE NEWS: Giant guitar tribute to Taylor Swift finds fame after a decade

Spremulli said he always encourages his clients to get their passports, despite many cruise lines not requiring one for certain trips.

"I would rather spend the extra money and have that peace of mind knowing that if there's ever an issue I can get back in into the country," said Spremulli.

He said generally you can count on the nearest consulate or embassy for help.

The state department recommends all international travelers register for the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program.

"I use that same philosophy when it comes to insurance. You're investing a little bit of money but protecting a much larger investment knowing that if there's ever a problem, you can take care of it," said Spremulli.

Martin said a relative is staying with the children's grandmother while she recovers in the hospital.

She expects them to be back stateside on Thursday.

National News | Pregnant Disney cruise passenger airlifted by Coast Guard after medical emergency

A Coast Guard MH-60T Jayhawk helicopter aircrew conducted a medevac for a Disney Fantasy cruise ship passenger, Monday, in the Atlantic Ocean 180 miles northwest of Aguadilla, Puerto Rico. (U.S. Coast Guard)

Stunning video shows a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter airlifting a pregnant passenger from a Disney cruise ship near Puerto Rico.

The chopper was dispatched from Miami on Monday after the 35-year-old woman experienced unspecified health complications and required more advanced care than what was available onboard the Disney Fantasy ship .

The vessel was about 180 miles northwest of Aguadilla, Puerto Rico when the rescue call was made by the ship’s crew.

The woman and the ship’s doctor were hoisted aboard the aircraft and flew to Fernando Luis Ribas Dominicci Airport in San Juan before she was taken to a hospital.

“We are glad everything came together to help this passenger,” Ensign Michael Riccio, Coast Guard Sector San Juan operations unit leader, said in a news release Tuesday. “The competency displayed by the Disney Fantasy crew and the Coast Guard personnel and units involved made all the difference.”

“Our crew was able to quickly, safely, and efficiently execute a long-range MEDEVAC for the patient to receive the higher level of care she required,” Lt. Cmdr. Todd Stephens added in the news release. “This case demonstrates the value of good crew resource management and the capabilities of our Jayhawk helicopter.”

The woman’s condition is not currently known.

How Can Someone Get A Hold of Us in an Emergency?

Cool Cruiser

Going on our first cruise this weekend and leaving our 1 year old at home with grandma. We are planning on turning off our phones at sea. We are able to call home while in port. But, what happens when we are at sea? Can my mom just call Royal Caribbean if it is an emergency to get a hold of us on the ship? There are several numbers listed on the website. Should I give my mom the reservation or guest relations number?

Thanks in advance!

yes she can use shore to ship phone to your room with the proper information but I think I read 2 weeks ago it is $7.95 per minute, not the end of the world in an emergency but don't call to say hello:)

Should I give my mom the reservation or guest relations number?   Thanks in advance!

Your friends and family can contact the ship by calling (888) 724-SHIP. Or from outside the U.S. they can call (732) 335-3285. The cost is $7.95 USD a minute and can be charged to their American Express®, MasterCard®, Visa®, Discover® or Diners Club®. From outside the U.S. additional long distance charges will also apply.

You can make ship-to-shore calls from your stateroom, 24 hours a day. The cost is $7.95 USD per minute and will be automatically charged to your SeaPassSM account.

If you turn 1 phone on while at sea you will not get charged unless you answer the call. Even if you leave it on silent you would see if you had a missed call from grandma. I have used my phone before while at sea because at the end of cruise we ran into a tropical storm and I wanna say it is a lot cheaper than using the room phone.. I have AT&T

I thought I just read a post saying that if someone leaves you a voicemail, even if you wait until a port to listen to it, you will get charged for using the ship's cell phone tower, because the voicemail was actually recorded while you were on the ship???? Is that truly the case??? We are also trying to figure out the best way for communication with our kids in an emergency.

Our thoughts were having grandparents send a text saying "911" since texts cost less, and then we would know to call home using our cell ($2.49 per minute, much cheaper than the ship-to-shore). However, my hesitation in leaving my phone on at all times (even if we never answer unless we get a 911) was that I might get various incoming "unwanted" calls that I would be charged for if those "unwanted" people leave me voicemails. Can anyone clarify voicemail charges (or non-charges) if you don't listen to them while on ship? I am often contacted by various people and accounts related to my job and there is no way to notify all these people not to call. I would much rather leave my cell on for emergencies, but am very nervous.....

This should help you out:)

If the call goes to voicemail you will be charged for the call, at least by AT&T (our carrier as well).

OP, does your mother text? If not, teach her how:D. Turn on your phone twice a day and take it out of airplane mode to see if she's sent you a message (tell her what time you're going to do it and stick to the schedule). There is no charge, either from the ship's cell tower or from AT&T to receive an international text. There is a .50 charge to send one, whether you have a domestic texting plan or not.

Also make sure she has the authority via a power of attorney (or whatever documentation your state has) to take your child to the doctor or hospital.

I have read reports that Guest Services has shown great compassion for people with loved ones at home with medical issues. So if, heaven forbid, something happens, your first stop should be there to the front desk to see what assistance they can provide you.

And have a great cruise!:)

My husband is in the military and needs to be reachable in the case of emergency. The 1-800 number and $8 per minute is correct - how miffed will his commanding officer be when he has to pull out his credit card!

As far as receiving voicemails, etc., you may want to look into Google Voice. It will send you an e-mail of your voicemail. I think you can keep it from ringing through to your phone.

vavasmom

For thr 1-800 number you need the ship, guest name, and reservation number (maybe it is cabin I always leave both). It is expensive but in a true emergency works.

To the PP the CO would need a credit card

Q: Can I contact people back home from the ship?

A: Your friends and family can contact the ship by calling (888) 724-SHIP. Or from

outside the U.S. they can call (732) 335-3285. The cost is $7.95 USD a minute

and can be charged to their American Express®, MasterCard®, Visa®, Discover®

or Diners Club®. From outside the U.S. additional long distance charges will also apply.

You can make ship-to-shore calls from your stateroom, 24 hours a day. The cost

is $7.95 USD per minute and will be automatically charged to your SeaPassSM account.

You can also use our onboard Internet Cafés, stateroom Internet connection,

or Hot Spots to send an e-mail to your friends or family for a minimal fee.

I also give a copy of the Cruise itinerary, SHIP NAME and Cabin Number to those who

may in event of an emergency, contact me.

If they use email, I also email the info to them and advise not to delete untill after

Before my father passed away, I kept informed about his condition (NOT life

threatening) by email with my sister (parents were staying with her).

I was comped and purchased internet minuites.

Every day or two I would check my email using the onboard computers to make sure

that all was well. and my sister would email me at the end of every day with the status.

I kept the usage low in the following way.

1. used a little used email account - so load time of emails would be minimal.

2. Subject line said it all (example: All is well, had a good day, doctor report good)

in the event she had more detail to say, she would indicate in subject line "read email"

This way I did not have to open the emails (unless requested to), much quicker.

3. I emailed her when online , so she could we by timeline what messaages I read.

I also limited the message to the subject line (example: Saw St thomas today

weather fine, love to all) short and sweet.

4. The internet connection is very slow, to reduce the time I spent online, I typed my

outgoing subject line on one of the free websites search input box (before logging in)

After highlighting the text I used the "CTL C" copy command and after I logged in

and setting up my outgoing email I used the "CTL V" command to paste my message

into the subject line.

I USED A MINIMAL AMOUNT OF INTERNET TIME.

Of course in the event my Sister or Parents needed to contact me they had the

instructions on how to reach me onboard.

(see my prior posting Instructions from the RCCL web site FAQs )

Thank you so much everyone for your responses. I have given the 800 number to our in-laws and my mom. We are also planning on purchasing an internet package. I called Verizon and we were told the best thing to do would be to either turn phones to Airplane mode (we both have iPhones). To be really safe, she suggested we turn off data and roaming so our phones don't continue to download emails, etc.

My cousin did tell me about leaving something with my mom about allowing medical care. So, I called our pediatrician and I need to fill out a medical consent form (they have at their office) so they have it on file. I'm telling you this info for the PP and also for anyone who may do a search. I didn't know about this until she mentioned.

You all are fabulous. Thank you:D

nelblu

You can call from your cabin to your mom via the room tele., and your mom can contact you via ship to shore. RCL will provide you with a tel # to contact you on the ship.

I went on 2 of Royal Caribbean's largest and newest cruise ships. I enjoyed them, but they're not for everyone.

  • I've sailed on Royal Caribbean's largest cruise ships , Wonder of the Seas and Icon of the Seas.
  • Both megaships are jam-packed with people, amenities, and dining options.
  • But if you want a quiet cruise to unique destinations, they might not be for you.

Insider Today

Before booking a vacation at sea, travelers should always research the best cruise line and ship for their needs.

If you're looking for a cheap and fast trip, try Margaritaville at Sea . Craving something more upscale? Consider Oceania Cruises.

But if you're looking for high-end sailing to unique destinations, I'd suggest avoiding Royal Caribbean's megaships .

Royal Caribbean has become synonymous with giant, family-friendly cruise ships

By 2028, Royal Caribbean wants one-third of its fleet to be megaships.

The latest addition, the 1,196-foot-long and 248,663-gross-ton Icon of the Seas, entered service in January, unseating Wonder of the Seas as the world's largest cruise liner.

Together, the two vessels can fit over 19,000 people — about 4,500 crew and 14,500 guests. Each ship has eight neighborhoods and there are 29 bars and 48 eateries between them.

I've attended complimentary sailings on both Wonder and Icon, the longest of which was three nights on the latter. From their colorful pool decks to the inescapable crowds, as a solo-adult traveler, I was equal parts entertained, overwhelmed, and overstimulated.

Related stories

But admittedly, I had fun. I do love a good waterslide; Wonder has three of them and Icon has six.

If you want to go on a cruise with your children — and if they, like me, love activities like rock climbing and mini golf — Royal Caribbean's megaships could be your best option.

Wonder and Icon are jam-packed with activity spaces like ice-skating rinks and ziplines.

But don't expect a peaceful retreat. The rowdy, bar-hopping adults and screaming children at the water playground aren't conducive to a relaxing vacation.

Megavessels might not be for you if you want a quiet cruise

If you want a relaxing vacation — maybe one that doesn't involve crowds of children — you shouldn't stay on either Royal Caribbean yacht.

There are many ways to have a luxury vacation on Icon of the Seas . But unless you want to pay for upcharged amenities at every turn, you'd be better off spending more upfront to reserve a premium cruise line — especially if you're interested in cruising for the destinations, not the ships.

After all, like most of Royal Caribbean's largest vessels, Icon and Wonder exclusively sail in the Caribbean.

Some destinations, such as French Polynesia, have set restrictions on which cruises can travel there amid concerns about pollution and overcrowding.

If stopping at these ports — or, really, anywhere outside the Caribbean — is at the top of your vacation wish list, you'll have to travel on a smaller Royal Caribbean ship or go with a different cruise line like Oceania , Silversea, and Regent Seven Seas.

You might not get a waterpark, but you'll get a quieter vacation to locations no megaship will likely be allowed to visit.
