Witch Marnie , has just spent two years with her grandma Aggie . While hosting a mortal neighborhood Halloween party, Marnie tries to impress a new boy, Kal by showing him Aggie's magically-hidden room. Unbeknownst to Marnie, Kal is actually the son of Kalabar and does take the opportunity to steal Aggie's spell book, slipping the spell book into his pocket.

Soon Aggie notices unwelcome magical symptoms. She and Marnie travel to Halloweentown to investigate and fix the problem before the portal between Halloweentown and the mortal world, open only on Halloween, closes at midnight. They discover that the whole town has been turned into a made-to-match black and white silent film and that the inhabitants have been turned into humans (or rather, into what Halloweentownians see as humans being: dreary and monotonous beings concerned only with such things as sensible dress or sorting socks). The victims include Marnie's goblin friend Luke . Aggie diagnoses this as the "Grey Spell."

Aggie contacts grandson Dylan back home for a spell from her book , and Dylan and Sophie discover the book is missing. Marnie and Aggie learn that Kal is actually a warlock, and the son of their enemy Kalabar (from the previous movie ). Kal did not break the Code of Merlin , a way of life for magical beings, by stealing Aggie's book to limit her ability to hinder his attempt to complete his father's revenge on both Halloweentown and the mortal world. Aggie believes that if he is willing to go that far, then there is nothing that they can put past him.

Aggie searches for her spare copy of her spell book at her house in Halloweentown, but it is missing and she despairs. During a conversation between Aggie and Marnie, about another way to reverse the "Grey Spell," Marnie inadvertently says the spell "Trap a" which reverts Luke back to his goblin form. Unable to explain the spells' reversal, the group soon believes that it is temporary. The trio travel to the lair of the well known junk magnet of the universe, Gort , who acquires lost items from both realms. He had been discolored by the Grey Spell and had sold the spare spell book some time ago. Unfortunately Aggie loses her color and sorts socks with Gort and everyone is trapped in his house. Marnie uses time travel to go back before the black and white happened. Unfortunately, when they get there, they learn that Gort had sold the spare spellbook to Kalabar about 50 years prior (as Luke says, "Kalabar must have been working on this world domination thing for decades."). By remembering what things Marnie had been, hastefully, saying back when Luke returned to (Goblin) normal, they learn that, in her haste, she said "trap a" as "trapa", which is "Apart" spelled backwards. Despite being able to use a wizard's lost time-line, to speed up getting back to the present (as, due to the fact that, no matter what time period it is in Halloweentown, time keeps moving in the mortal world). They arrive too late and the portal shuts tight with a big, strong, metal, bulletproof door, trapping Marnie in Halloweentown.

Kal, having enspelled Halloweentown into a monochrome talkie caricature of the mortal world, is now at work enspelling the mortal world into a Super Technirama 70 monster movie caricature of Halloweentown. Sophie and Dylan realize that Alex, believed to be Kal's father, was actually a golem intended to distract Gwen . To make their mom believe that, Sophie creates a fly. Alex, being made of frogs, eats the fly and ends up getting dispelled by a furious Gwen. Being informed of Kal's plot to turn humans into the creatures they "mock" on Halloween, Gwen tries to take off her mask, but it doesn't work. Kal has made the mask stick to her face. He then continues his spell; they are to late as chaos as endured throughout the mortal world. Dylan and Sophie hid from the monster humans.

Marnie, trapped in Halloweentown, frees Aggie, but refuses to accept they are locked in. She contacts her siblings through a shrunken head, and they create a new spell that forces the portal between Halloweentown and the mortal world to reopen permanently. an anger Kal confronts Marnie who mocks him of his power to keep everyone a part and demands for the spell book. Kal produces living slimy servant vines of dark magic to the cruelty in his heart and takes both spell books in an attempt to prove his own superiority, which fails when Marnie takes them from his hands. Kal then is sent away by the vines, apparently according to his own desire, and the family breaks the spells. Aggie undoes all the damage then after a talk with Gwen head to head, setting things right in both the mortal world and Halloweentown.

  • To traverse between worlds, the incantation is "From [current world] depart we now; on this All Hallows Eve. Back into [other world]; through the portal we take our leave."

The One Thing You Never Knew About 'Halloweentown II: Kalabar’s Revenge'

time travel spell halloweentown 2

Disney Channel’s Halloweentown II: Kalabar’s Revenge — the successful sequel to 1998’s Halloweentown — introduced us to the World’s Most Charming Villain: Kal, son of Kalabar. Kids hardcore crushed on him growing up, even though he was Marnie Cromwell’s evil adversary. But underneath all the magic, cloaks, and creepy protruding vines, Kal was just an angsty teen with serious daddy issues .

While Kal, a gifted warlock, was able to flawlessly spout off complicated spells, actor Daniel Kountz had a little more trouble doing so on set. The Creature Spell Kal cast during the climax of the film was written into the script, but the first spell we hear Kal chant — when he conjures the portal to Halloweentown — was completely improvised.

For that scene, the script just stated, “Kal says spell and walks through the portal,” Kountz told MTV News. Admittedly, Kountz assumed they’d give him a spell to say, so he never prepared one ahead of time. Unfortunately, Kountz was in for a rude awakening when director Mary Lambert asked him 15 minutes prior to shooting if he had his spell ready. Playing it cool, Kountz told her he did, but then spent the next few minutes panicking in his trailer, trying to come up with something that’d pass for a legit spell. For a warlock as powerful as Kal, a phrase like “open sesame” just wasn’t going to cut it.

Thankfully, Kountz took choir in high school and had learned a German song. He recalled a random phrase from the tune and decided to use that as his spell. “I just pulled that out of nowhere, and they ended up using [it in the movie], and I think it actually worked out pretty well,” Kountz confessed. “Little did they know I was freaking out because I didn’t have my spell prepared.” Even warlocks thrive under pressure.

Halloweentown II: Kalabar’s Revenge Retro Review

time travel spell halloweentown 2

Marnie, Aggie, Gwen, Dylan, and Sophie are back and this time they have to protect Halloweentown and the mortal world from Kalabar’s son in “Halloweentown II: Kalabar’s Revenge.” This time, Kalabar’s son, Kal, has come to the mortal world and stolen Aggie’s spellbook, then returned to Halloweentown to cast the grey spell on all of its inhabitants. Once the portal closes, he plans to cast the creature spell to turn all of the inhabitants of the mortal world at the high school dance and costume party into the costumes they are wearing. The Piper family has to find a way to connect across both worlds to re-open the portal and save both worlds.

This film falls into many of the traps of sequels by basically recycling the plot of the first film in places. It’s not the exact same film again like “Home Alone 2” or “D2: The Mighty Ducks,” but there are some eerie similarities. Instead of Kalabar trying to woo Gwen, his ex-girlfriend; we get Kalabar’s son, Kal, wooing Marnie so that he can still Aggie’s spellbook. Kal’s mission is to complete Kalabar’s mission of monster domination over the mortal world. Yes, he goes about it in a different way, so they aren’t fighting the exact same battles, but it’s the same endgame. And, for a film called “Kalabar’s Revenge,” you would think Kalabar would be in it, but he’s not. It’s a little surprising Kal wasn’t trying to bring Kalabar back to complete his mission.

time travel spell halloweentown 2

While the film does have its flaws, it’s still a lot of fun. It’s great to see how much Aggie is trying to adjust to the mortal world to be with her family, but also how much she misses her home. That’s an emotional conundrum anyone who has ever moved far away from home can understand. You want to make your new situation work, but you miss where you came from. Also, Marnie’s growth from the first film to this one is nice to see, even if they could’ve done a little more. And, Dylan finally accepting that he’s part-warlock and being able to help his entire family at the end is a nice touch. In the end, the Pipers can go back and forth between the two realms with ease and Aggie is no longer separated from her home or her family.

Overall, this would’ve been a nice wrap-up to this franchise. Give them two Disney Channel Original Movies and tell a complete story that ends with them being able to see each other more. Gwen can still be mortal, Aggie can still be a witch, and Gwen’s children now have a choice as to which path they want to take. Of course, this was so well received it led to two more sequels. We’ll get to them another time. This wasn’t as good as the first “Halloweentown,” but it’s a good sequel and enjoyable for any DCOM fan or Halloween fan in your life.

Appearance [ ]

In the only movie he was in, he was shown to wear a black leather jacket, black T-shirt, and jeans. With blonde and blue eyes, and a attractive facial expression.

Personality [ ]

Kal is evil, Cruel, and Dangerous

Biography [ ]

He was born in 1985 to his father Kalabar and Kalabar's wife/lover . He had a 'dad' that was working with the plan to destroy the Cromwell's for destroying his father in the first installment. Kal is a powerful warlock and was able to make all civilians of Halloweentown turn black and white and turned their personalities different then they usually were. Like Gort who had a seemingly uncleaning personality he was also somebody who took everything who became lost for himself and never returned them to their rightful owners. Sometimes, it is said that Kal never was defeated, and is still trying to find a way to destroy the Cromwell's for killing his father. But this is probably false because he was defeated at the end of Halloweentown II: Kalabar's Revenge. Due to the fact he was defeated, he never showed his face to the public ever again and was most likely sealed within a mirror or served imprisonment in Halloweentown or the real world for causing so much trouble at Marnie's middle or high school. The Cromwell family was shocked when they heard that Kalabar had a son cause they thought he always loved Gwen and not somebody else but to that shocking news, he had a unnamed lover whom he had one kid and that kid was Kal.

Halloweentown II: Kalabar's Revenge [ ]

Marnie has just spent a year with her grandmother Agatha "Aggie" Cromwell . While hosting a mortal neighborhood Halloween Party in her town of Riverview, Marnie tries to impress a cute new boy, Kal, (unknown to Marnie, he was Kalabar's son) by showing him Aggie's magically-hidden room. Kal secretly taken the spell book "Biblio Magica" when he magically shrunk it to a mere pocket size and slipped it into his pocket. He then gave Marnie a rose (a similar trait shared by his father who was in love with Marnie's mother Gwen and usually presented her an enchanted rose as a way of "letting magic do the talking"). He left the Piper family's Halloween party and opened the portal to Halloweentown with an incantation to begin his secret and sinister agenda.

Soon Aggie noticed unwelcome magical symptoms her second granddaughter Sophie senses earlier. She and Marnie traveled to Halloweentown to investigate and fix the problem before the portal between Halloweentown and the Mortal World , open only on Halloween, closed at midnight. They discovered that the whole town had been turned into a made-to-match black and white silent film, and that the inhabitants had been turned into humans (or rather, into what Halloweentownians' saw as humans being: dreary, wearisome, and monotonous beings concerned only with such things as dressing sensibly or sorting socks). The victims included Marnie's goblin friend, Luke . Aggie diagnosed that as the "Gray Spell".

Aggie contacted her grandson, Dylan back home for a spell from her book, and Dylan and Sophie discovered that the book was missing. Marnie and Aggie learned that Kal was actually a warlock, and the son of their sworn enemy, Kalabar. Kal broke the Code of Merlin, a way of life for all magical beings which forbids the stealing of spells from another magic-user, by stealing Aggie's book to limit her ability to hinder his attempt to complete his father's revenge on both Halloweentown and the Mortal World. Aggie believed that if he was willing to go that far, then there was nothing that they could put past him.

Aggie searched for her spare copy of her spellbook at her house in Halloweentown, but it was missing and she despaired. During a conversation between Aggie and Marnie, about another way to reverse the Gray Spell, Marnie inadvertently said the spell: "Trapa" which reverted Luke back to his goblin form. Unable to explain the spell's reversal, the group soon believed that it was temporary. The trio traveled to the lair of the well known junk magnet of the universe, Gort , who acquired lost items from both realms. He had been discolored by the Gray Spell and had sold the spare spell book some time ago. Unfortunately, Aggie lost her color and sorted socks with the Gort and everyone was trapped in his house. Marnie used time travel to go back before the Grey Spell happened.

Unfortunately, when they got there, they learned that Gort had sold the spare spell book to Kalabar about 50 years prior (as Luke says, "Kalabar must have been working on this world domination thing for decades!"). By remembering what things Marnie had been, hastily, saying back when Luke returned to normal, they learned that, in her haste, she said "trap a" as "Trapa", which is "Apart" spelled backwards. Despite being able to use a wizard's lost time-line, to speed up getting back to the present (as, due to the fact that, no matter what time period it was in Halloweentown, time kept moving in the Mortal World). They arrived too late and the portal shut tight at midnight with a big, strong, metal, bulletproof door usually used as a gateway between worlds, and trapped Marnie and the others in Halloweentown.

Kal, having enspelled Halloweentown into a monochrome talkie caricature of Halloweentown as planned, was at work enspelling the Mortal World into a Super Technirama 70 monster movie caricature of Halloweentown via another forbidden magic curse known as the "Creature Spell". Sophie and Dylan realized that Alex , believed to be Kal's father, was actually a Golem comprised of frogs, intended to distract Gwen.

Marnie and Luke used a Welsh time travel spell that the now discolored Aggie written down in order to evade Kal's spell with Marnie (having trouble) reading the incantation that reads "Pawb 'r Ddiwrnodau and Heddiw, Archwn Adawaist ni Chofnoda". First time was five minutes when Aggie becomes cursed by the Gray Spell. Second time to Earth's primitive caveman times. The third time to a now empty version of Gort's house with Kal taking everyone there "offline" via a limbo spell he cast. The fourth and final time Marnie used the time travel spell and finds herself with Luke and Gort in the ogre's junk-filled abode 50 years prior. After Marnie accidentally left the note with the written time travel spell on it somewhere on the lost items within the house, not realizing the grounds Gort's house was built on has the magical power to not only attract lost objects from anywhere in the universe like a magnet, but also to make things that ended up here to go "poof" as in forever erased from existence. While a troubled Marnie utters the time travel spell unsuccessfully which instead brings more things to Gort including a Victorian-styled curly hair on his hair and silly-looking top hat and garden gnome objects, Gort himself had enough of it and lets both Marnie and Luke to quickly get back into present-day Halloweentown via a mystic doorway called a Timeline.

To make their mother Gwen who at Riverview High School to believe that Alex is a golem, Sophie created a fly. Alex, being made of frogs, ate the fly and ended up getting dispelled by a furious Gwen. Being informed of Kal's plot to turn humans into the creatures that they "mocked" on Halloween, Gwen tried to take off her mask. Cal made the mask stick to her face, then continued the spell.

Kal puts the Creature Spell into effect precisely at midnight, turning the party guests at the high school into the monsters they are dressed as, resulting in extreme chaos. Dylan and Sophie hide from the monster humans including their mother (as a fiendish and dangerous goblin) and Marnie's high school friend Cindy (as a bloodthirsty and malevolent vampire).

Marnie Piper refuses to accept they are stuck in Halloweentown for a year after she and Luke and Aggie were too late to reach the Mortal World. She contacts her siblings and together they create a new spell that forces the portal between Halloweentown and the mortal world to reopen permanently. Kal angrily confronts Marnie, who mocks him of his power to keep everyone apart and demands him to return the two copies of the Biblio Magical spell book. Kal produces living, slimy, serpentine vines comprised of dark magic via the cruelty in his heart and uses them to take both spell books in an attempt to prove his own superiority and the power of evil over the might of goodness, which fails when Marnie takes them from him using her glowing yellow aura manifested from the kindness and bravery in her heart. Kal is sent away by his spinning evil magic vines and disappeared in a flash of light.

Luke and Marnie stated he will return and this time Marnie and everyone else will be waiting and ready to face him together.

The Gray Spell (also sometimes spelled " Grey Spell ") is a spiritless magical curse capable of transforming anything and anyone into a dull and grayish version of themselves, it is one of the 2 dangerous spells in the 2001 Disney Channel Original Movie Halloweentown II: Kalabar's Revenge .

This forbidden enchantment is known to change a person's personality and looks. The one who becomes a victim of this accursed spell will act "normal" and wear grayish clothes. The Gray spell can also do the same to the environment surrounding the bewitched individual.

The spell is pronounced as " Apart ". The reverse spell is pronounced a " Trapa ".

Kal

Kal, after successfully conjured the Gray Spell upon all of Halloweentown.

Kal , arrived in Halloweentown and enspelled the entire magical realm into a monochrome talkie caricature of itself along with it's innocent inhabitants as grayish depressed mortal humans. He done this in preparations for transforming the Mortal World into a Super Technirama 70 monster movie caricature of Halloweentown via another banned magic curse known as the Creature Spell .

When Marnie Piper and her grandmother Aggie Cromwell sees everything wrong in Halloweentown upon their arrival, Kal's face emerged on a huge, pale block of brick at the center of Halloweentown where the town's fabled Jack O' Lantern pumpkin was. The warlock explains not only he was responsible for the Gray Spell, but he also revealed himself to be the secret biological child of the former Mayor of Halloweentown, Kalabar , before disappearing from the 2 Cromwell witches.

Marnie and Luke later used a Welsh time travel spell that the now discolored Aggie written down in order to evade Kal's spell with Marnie (having trouble) reading the incantation that reads "Pawb 'r Ddiwrnodau anad Heddiw, Archwn Adawaist ni Chofnoda". First time was 5 minutes when Aggie becomes cursed by the Gray Spell. Second time to Earth's primitive caveman times. The third time to a now empty version of Gort the Rancorous' cottage with Kal taking everyone there "offline" via a limbo spell he cast. The fourth and final time Marnie used the time travel spell and finds herself with Luke and Gort in the ogre's junk-filled abode 50 years prior. After Marnie accidently left the note with the written time travel spell on it somewhere on the lost items within the house, not realizing the grounds Gort's house was built on has the magical power to not only attract lost objects from anywhere in the universe like a magnet, but also to make things that ended up here to go "poof" as in forever erased from existence.

Luke and Marnie returned to Gort's house to free Aggie from the Gray Spell, but they were all 15 minutes late to reach the portal to the Mortal World as Kal successfully initiates the Creature Spell by turning everyone including Gwen Piper at Riverview High School into monsters.

After Kal's defeat and Aggie not only recovered the 2 copies of Biblio Magica, but also undoing the Creature Spell by chanting the incantation backwards and outloud, she and Marnie, along with Luke, Dylan and Sophie, returned to Halloweentown. Together, they all begin inciting "Trapa" outloud everywhere in Halloweentown and freeing everyone including Benny Deadman, Astrid and Gort, from the Gray Spell. Aggie Cromwell then cast her magic into returning the brick block back to Halloweentown's fabled Jack O' Lantern monument. Halloweentown has returned to it's peaceful and natural beauty.

  • The name of Aggie Cromwell's spellbook "Biblio Magica" comes from 2 words "Biblio ("Βιβλίο" from "biblion" in Greek meaning "book") and Magica (possibly from "magicae" in Latin meaning "magic" and also from the name of the Disney character Magica De Spell ) and the book's full name can roughly translated as "Magical Book" in this sense as well as it can be called " Magical Bible " (" Bible Magique " in French, " Magico Bibbia " in Italian, " Bíblia Mágica " in Portuguese, " Magică Biblie " in Romanian, and " Biblia Mágica " in Spanish).
  • The Gray Spell alongside it's alternative English name "Grey Spell" can be both translated in French as " La Gris de Charme " and " Magie Gris ".
  • The 2 chants "Apart" and "Trapa" for the Gray Spell can be translated in the French dialect as "Unè part" and "Tôit ôuvrant".

Biography [ ]

Two years after the first film, Marnie had a Halloween Party at her house, where Kal and Marnie first met. Marnie wanted to impress Kal by showing him Aggie's magically-hidden room. Kal then tricked Marnie into showing him Aggie's secret room and stole Aggie's spell books in order to prevent her and her family from stopping his plan to dominate both worlds. After that, he left the party and traveled to Halloweentown and started the gray spell that turned monsters to humans.

When Aggie and Marnie traveled to Halloweentown, they noticed that something was not right: The whole town was turned into a made-to-match black and white world, and that the inhabitants were turned into dreary, discolored, and monotonous humans.

Marnie and Aggie soon learned that Kal was actually a warlock and the son of their enemy, Kalabar. They also learned that Kal stole Aggie's spell book in order to limit her ability to hinder his attempt to complete his father's revenge on both Halloweentown and the Mortal World.

Kal then finished casting Halloweentown into a monochrome caricature of the Mortal World, and then planned to transform the Mortal World into a monster movie caricature of Halloweentown by using the Creature Spell .

Sophie and Dylan then realized that Alex , who was believed to be Kal's father, was actually a golem that was intended to distract their mother, Gwen, at a High School Halloween Party. Kal put his spell into effect and turned the party guests into the monsters that they were dressed as, which resulted in chaos. Dylan and Sophie then hid from the monster humans including their mother.

When Marnie contacted her siblings and they created a new spell that forced the portal between Halloweentown and the Mortal World to reopen permanently. Kal then angrily confronted Marnie, who then mocked him and then demanded both of Aggie's spell books back. Kal then produced slimy living serpent vines of dark magic and used them to take both spell books in an attempt to prove his own superiority, which then failed when Marnie took them from him. When Marnie took back the spell books, Kal then vanished. Luke said after Kal disappeared that he'll be back and they'll be ready for him.

Kal use Creature Spell

  • Kal's full name was hinted to be Kalabar Jr .
  • The spelling of his name was inconsistent, much like that of his father's. The subtitle of the movie, "Kalabar's Revenge", implied that his name was spelled Kal, but the end credits spelled his name as Cal.
  • Kal's actor, Daniel Kountz, is currently engaged to Kimberly J. Brown, who played Marnie Piper.

Storyline [ ]

Marnie has just spent two years with her grandmother Aggie. While hosting a mortal neighborhood Halloween party at their house, Marnie tries to win over a cute new boy, Kal, by showing him Aggie's magically-hidden room with a spellbook in it. Soon Aggie notices unwelcome magical symptoms. She and Marnie travel to Halloweentown to investigate and to fix the problem before the portal between Halloweentown and the mortal world, open only on Halloween, closes at midnight.

They discover that the whole town has been turned into a black-and-white world, and that the inhabitants have been turned into dreary, discolored, monotonous humans. The victims include Marnie's goblin friend Luke. Aggie diagnoses this as the "Grey Spell". Aggie contacts her grandson Dylan back home for a spell from her spell book. Dylan and Sophie discover the book is missing. Marnie and Aggie learn that Kal is actually a warlock and the son of their enemy Kalabar (from the previous film). They learn that Kal stole Aggie's spell book to limit her ability to hinder his attempt to complete his father's revenge both on Halloweentown and on the mortal world. Aggie searches for a spare copy of her spell book at her house in Halloweentown, but it is missing and she despairs. During a conversation with Aggie, Marnie inadvertently reverts Luke back to his goblin form. Unable to explain the spell's reversal, the group soon believes that it is temporary.

The trio travel to the lair of the well-known junk-magnet of the universe, Gort, who acquires lost items from both realms. He had been discolored by the Grey Spell and sold most of his junk. The group becomes trapped in Gort's house. Aggie loses her color as well and sorts through missing socks with Gort. Marnie uses time travel to go back to Gort's house before the Grey Spell happened. When Marnie and Luke arrive, they learn that Gort had sold the spare spell book to Kalabar about 50 years prior. By remembering what things Marnie had been hastefully saying back when Luke returned to his normal goblin form, they realize that the Grey Spell can be reverted by saying "Trapa", which is "Apart" spelled backwards.

Kal, having enspelled Halloweentown into a monochrome caricature of the mortal world, is now at work enspelling the mortal world into a monster movie caricature of Halloweentown. Sophie and Dylan realize that Alex, believed to be Kal's father, is actually a golem intended to distract their mother Gwen at a high-school Halloween party. Kal puts his spell into effect, turning the party guests into the monsters they are dressed as, resulting in chaos. Dylan and Sophie hide from the monster humans including their mother.

Marnie frees Aggie, but they are too late - the portal to the mortal world closes, trapping them in Halloweentown. Marnie refuses to accept they are locked in. She contacts her siblings and they develop a new spell that forces the portal between Halloweentown and the mortal world to reopen permanently. Kal angrily confronts Marnie, who mocks him and demands the spell book. Kal produces slimy living-serpent vines of dark magic and uses them to take both spell books in an attempt to prove his own superiority, which fails when Marnie takes them from him. Kal is sent away by the vines and the family breaks his spells in the mortal world and in Halloweentown. Kal will return for his revenge.
