15 Best Things to Do in Preston (Lancashire, England)

On the River Ribble, ten miles before it reaches the Irish Sea, Preston is a former market town granted city status in 2002. In the 14th century Flemish weavers settled in Preston, establishing a textile industry that would power the economy until the mid-20th century.

Sir Richard Arkwright, the man who invented the revolutionary spinning frame in the 1700s, was born right here.

As a burgeoning industrial centre in the 18th and 19th centuries, Preston was furnished with fine squares, cultivated parks and institutions like the Harris Museum.

The Ribble Steam Railway has one of the top locomotive museums in the UK, and St Walburge’s Church has the tallest spire of any parish church in England.

Let’s explore the best things to do in Preston :

1. Harris Museum and Art Gallery

Harris Museum And Art Gallery

Preston’s city museum and art gallery is in a striking Neoclassical hall inaugurated in 1893. The first thing you’ll see when you enter is a Foucault Pendulum, demonstrating the rotation of the earth and also a working clock.

The museum has awesome collections of natural history, textiles, costumes, ceramics and other decorative art.

The art gallery is furnished with hundreds of works by luminaries of 20th-century British art like Lucian Freud, Stanley Spencer and Graham Sutherland, and has watercolours by J. M. W. Turner.

As a priority, check out the Poulton Elk, the skeleton of an Ice Age elk, dating back 13,500 years with two barbed points inserted by humans.

This is the earliest evidence of human occupation discovered in Lancashire.

Finish with tea at the cafe, which sits in the atrium and has a special view up to the museum’s Egyptian balcony.

2. Avenham and Miller Parks

Avenham and Miller Parks

Two of the Northwest of England’s most refined Victorian parks, the Avenham and Miller Parks are side-by-side, flowing down to the Ribble to the south of Preston railway station.

The pair were designed by the prominent Victorian landscape architect Edward Milner in the 1860s and are separated by the embankment for the defunct East Lancashire Railway.

The larger of the two is Avenham Park, which has sprawling lawns, a Japanese Garden and a belvedere pavilion on high ground on the northeast side.

Miller Park is more formal, and features a rose garden, intricate flowerbeds and the very refined Derby Walk, ornamented with urns and a balustraded staircase that conducts you down to a fountain and bandstand.

Make sure to get down to the river, get a look at the Victorian railway viaduct and the open moorland on the opposite bank.

3. Ribble Steam Railway

Ribble Steam Railway

On an industrial estate near the Preston Docks, the Ribble Steam Railway is a combined museum and functioning heritage railway line.

The railway uses track that laid down for the docks, and runs for just over a mile along the Ribble River to Strand Road.

In summer you can come for a ride, pulled by a vintage steam or diesel locomotive.

These operate on weekends, but also for extended periods during the summer holidays.

The visitor centre and museum at Preston Riverside is attached to the workshops, where some sixty locomotives are stored and maintained.

This is among the largest collections of steam locomotives in the UK, 13 of which are on display, including five Andrew Barclay 0-4-0STs dating from the first decades of the 20th century.

4. Church of St Walburge

Church of St Walburge

Preston’s Grade I-listed Gothic Revival church went up in the middle of the 19th century, and was built by Joseph Hansom.

He also designed the Hansom cab, which revolutionised horse-drawn transport in Victorian times.

St Walburge’s is renowned for having the tallest spire of any parish church in the country, at 94 metres tall.

Not only is it Preston’s most commanding landmark, it’s one of the tallest buildings of any kind in the northwest of England.

The interior also has impressive proportions, at 50 metres in length and with a delicately carved hammer beam roof 25 metres above the floor of the nave.

If you’re keen to know more there are free heritage tours every Saturday between 11:30 and 14:30.

5. Winckley Square

Winckley Square

One of the prettiest places in Preston is this Georgian square, intended as a residential quarter for the city’s upper crust at the turn of the 19th century.

Winckley Square is at the heart of a conservation area, and is fronted mostly by long terraces of Georgian townhouses, which are especially grand on the north and west borders.

These look onto Wickley Square Gardens, which have flowing lawns, shaded by tall old hardwood trees like birches, willows and limes.

On the east side is a statue of Sir Robert Peel (1852), the Lancashire-born MP, and two-time Prime Minister of the UK, who introduced the concept of modern policing as Home Secretary in 1822.

6. Preston North End F.C.

Preston North End F.C.

The local football club is a team with serious heritage.

Preston North End was established in 1880 and was one of the 12 Founding Members of the football league, which played its first season in 1888-89. Preston North End won both the League and the FA Cup in 1888-89, still the most successful season in the club’s history.

The Lilywhites, as they’re sometimes known, play at 23,404-capactity Deepdale in the north of the city.

This storied ground opened in 1878 and is touted as the oldest continuously used football stadium in the world.

Its pitch has been graced by greats like Tom Finney and Bill Shankly, who went on to become one of the most decorated managers of all time.

As of 2018, Preston North End play in the Championship, the second tier of English professional football.

7. Guild Wheel

Guild Wheel

The Burgesses (freemen of the borough) of Preston were bestowed the right to hold a Guild Merchant (a kind of fair) by King Henry II in 1179. From 1328 this took place every 20 years, and there was an unbroken sequence of celebrations from 1542 to 1922, spoiled only by the Second World War.

For the Guild Merchant in 2012 the city devised a 21-mile greenway, a circular walking and bicycle path linking Preston to the Lancashire countryside and villages.

A good starting point is the Preston Docks on the Ribble to the west of the city centre.

8. Preston Cenotaph

Preston Cenotaph

The designer of the UK’s iconic red telephone boxes, Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, was responsible for Preston’s monument to its First World War dead.

The Cenotaph was unveiled on Market Square in 1926 and its inscription was later revised to include those who perished in the Second World War.

The sculpture is the work of Henry Alfred Pegram who belonged to the British New Sculpture movement at the end of the 19th century.

The centrepiece is an image symbolising Victory, holding two wreaths, while at the top of the column is an empty tomb.

To underling the Cenotaph’s importance to Preston, the memorial was recently restored at large expense to mark the centenary of the beginning of the First World War.

9. Lancashire Infantry Museum

Lancashire Infantry Museum

Anyone inspired by military history should call in at this museum, which is the largest repository of regimental history in the north England.

The location is half the appeal, in the active, but soon to be decommissioned Fulwood Barracks, a group of solemn sandstone buildings built in the 1840s.

The museum charts Lancashire’s involvement in wars going back to the end of the 17th century, and is overflowing with banners, medals, weapons, instruments and curiosities.

The Waterloo Room holds the Salamanca Eagle, which is listed by the Home Office as a British National Treasure.

This highly symbolic gold standard was carried by the 22e Regiment de la Ligne and captured at the Battle of Salamanca on 22 July 1812.

10. Moor Park

Moor Park

The largest and oldest park in the city, Moor Park is north of Preston’s centre next to the Deepdale Stadium.

It is claimed to be the first municipal park established in England’s nascent industrial towns in the 19th century.

Previously this had been common land, a holdover from the Medieval Royal Forest of Fulwood.

Edward Milner was hired to redesign Moor Park in the 1860s, as a project to give employment to redundant spinners and weavers during Lancashire Cotton Famine.

The park has a lake, the Serpentine, and an observatory, constructed in 1927 and now in the hands of the University of Central Lancashire.

Go for a wander along Moor Park Avenue on the south side of the park, traced by tall lime trees and next to some of the most coveted property in the city.

11. Preston Docks

Preston Docks

When the sun is out you couldn’t pick a finer place for a walk than Preston’s long rectangular dock in the Riversway area.

The dock was opened in 1892 by Alfred, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, who was Victoria’s second son and soon to be Admiral of the Fleet in the Royal Navy.

At the time it was Europe’s largest single dock, at more than 900 metres long and 180 metres across.

There’s an Odeon cinema on the east, while to the east is the Preston Marina and the Riversway Control Centre.

On a large patch of grass here is the 100-ton crane, erected in 1958 to remove the 19th-century lock gates for restoration.

This giant mechanism still operates today, lifting larger boats from the water.

12. Brockholes Nature Reserve

Brockholes Nature Reserve

A former quarry upriver on the floodplain of the Ribble has slowly been turned into a 250-acre nature reserve, made up of pools, woodland and reedbeds.

The reserve has three designated walking trails, partly over boardwalks and installed with hides where in summer you can sight sand martins and herons among the geese and swans.

What makes the reserve stand out is its award-winning visitor village, which floats on a lake and is joined to the bank by wooden walkways.

In the village’s wooden hut-like houses, topped with solar panels, there’s a restaurant, shops, an exhibition space, activity rooms for schools and a conference centre.

13. Turbary Woods Owl and Bird of Prey Sanctuary

Turbary Woods Owl And Bird Of Prey Sanctuary

In the south of Preston, ten minutes by car from the city centre, there’s a non-profit rescue and rehabilitation centre for owls and other birds of prey.

Turbary Woods provides a habitat for more than 90 birds of prey, such as falcons, buzzards, hawks, eagles, vultures, all housed in spacious aviaries in a forest.

You’ll get the chance to see some of these birds, like falcons, hawks and owls in flight, while during the week you can attend owl and hawk experience days.

Here you can handle four different species, including a vulture if you’re brave enough, and learn the basics of falconry.

14. Forest of Bowland

Forest of Bowland

The City of Preston incorporates a parcel of this large Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

The Forest of Bowland is one of the last traces of a massive expanse of wilderness that once cloaked most of Northern England.

Despite the name, most of the Forest of Bowland is heathland and blanket bog, inhabited by grouse.

People travelling from Preston city centre tend to stop at the Beacon Fell Country Park in the south of the forest.

There you can drop by the visitor centre and walk the isolated eponymous hill, which rises to 266 metres.

From the summit you can see Blackpool Tower in the west and spectacular Bowland hills like Parlick and Fair Snape Fell to the north.

15. Bowland Wild Boar Park

Bowland Wild Boar Park

While out in the Forest of Bowland you can pay a visit to this animal-oriented family attraction.

The Bowland Wild Boar Park has sheep, wallabies, llamas, skunks, red squirrels, chickens, meerkats, raccoons, coatis and of course, wild boars.

In season you can meet cute baby animals, and there’s a schedule of activities like feeding lambs, coatis, skunks and meerkats, and petting chicks.

Kids can burn off extra energy at the straw barn play area, and take tractor and trailer rides around the park for a small additional fee.

Preston took a major blow in 2010 with the relocation of the National Football Museum to Manchester. Nevertheless, Preston still offers some interesting museums; the magnificent Harris Museum and Art Gallery , Museum of Lancashire, and the Lancashire Infantry Museum.

The Preston Guild Hall and Charter Theatre is the city’s major entertainment venue. Both Vue and Odeon have multiplex cinemas in the city, while tenpin bowling is offered at the MFA Bowl. Children can enjoy a train ride on the Ribble Steam Railway .

Preston has over 700 Grade I and II listed buildings but over two thirds of its area is open space and countryside. Avenham Park and Miller Park rank amongst the finest examples of Victorian era parks in the country. Both are close to the city centre and have benefited from multi-million pound refurbishments. Other parks include Ashton Park and Moor Park.

Avenham Park

Attractions outside the city but within easy reach include Astley Hall and Park , Beacon Fell Country Park , the British Commercial Vehicle Museum , Brockholes , Cuerden Valley Park , Hoghton Tower , Preston England Temple , Turbary Woods Owl and Bird of Prey Sanctuary, Samlesbury Hall , the West Lancashire Light Railway, Worden Park , and Yarrow Valley Country Park .

The Fishergate Shopping Centre and the St George’s Shopping Centre are the major shopping malls in the city centre. Retail parks include the Capitol Centre and Deepdale Shopping Park .

Botany Bay near Chorley, Bygone Times in Eccleston, and Huntley’s Country Stores in Samlesbury all offer unique shopping experiences and products.

Preston has good connections to the UK’s motorway network. The M55, M61 and M65 terminate in the city. The M6 motorway passes Preston and offers a direct route to destinations such as Lancaster, Penrith, Carlisle, Warrington, Stoke-on-Trent, and Birmingham.

The nearest motorway service stations are Charnock Richard (M6), Blackburn with Darwen (M65), and Rivington (M61).

Car parks in the city centre can be found at Preston Train Station , the Fishergate Shopping Centre , the St George’s Shopping Centre , and Preston Bus Station .

Preston Train Station is on the West Coast Main Line and offers direct connections to London, Birmingham and Glasgow. Regional destinations such as Blackpool, Lancaster, Bolton and Warrington are also served.

Railway stations in the areas surrounding Preston are Adlington , Bamber Bridge , Buckshaw Parkway , Chorley , Croston , Euxton Balshaw Lane , Leyland , and Lostock Hall .

I Heart Britain

Offbeat Britain: Preston, Lancashire – Where to Stay & What to Do

visit preston england

If you've ever watched Hetty Wainthropp Investigates , you'll have seen a bit of Preston, Lancashire. Though Hetty herself lived 15 miles away in the market town of Darwen, a couple of episodes included forays into the nearby city.

While it's not a city at the top of many tourist lists, that doesn't mean it's not a worthy destination – especially if you've already seen many of the hot spots, or you just want to spend a few days in a place that isn't crawling with tourists.

So what does one do in Preston? And where should you stay? In this post, we'll highlight some of the best the (small) city has to offer.

Table of Contents

Why Would You Visit Preston?

In Hetty Wainthropp's version of Preston, it's a run-down city full of decaying tower blocks, graffiti, and trouble. In reality, it's definitely rough around the edges, but it's also full of some lovely sites and lovely people. In fact, some people were quite angry with the TV portrayal of the city , feeling it was an inaccurate portrayal.

Visiting Preston will give you a great feel for a different sort of England. While some cities and towns leave you feeling like you're in an amusement park that happens to have some residents, Preston isn't like that.

Where is Preston, England?

visit preston england

Preston is a city in the northwestern part of England in the county of Lancashire. It's north of Liverpool and Manchester, West of Leeds and Bradford, and East of Blackpool. The city is located along the River Ribble, roughly 10 miles before it opens up into the Irish Sea.

Demographically speaking, it's a bit more diverse than average, with roughly 85% of the city's 142,000 or so residents being White British, White Irish, or “Other White”. South Asian/Indian people are the most common non-indigenous group in the city.

Film maker Nick Park is one of the city's most famous past residents. If the name doesn't sound familiar, you'll surely know some of his work. He's the creator of Wallace & Gromit , Shaun the Sheep , and Chicken Run .

Things to Do In Preston, England

If you're a nature and animal lover, you're in luck. Preston has loads of nature-oriented attractions, along with a fair bit of history and shopping. It also has some truly lovely parks for a city of its size, owing to an impressive industrial past.

Turbary Woods Owl & Bird of Prey Sanctuary

https://www.instagram.com/p/Bua7KA9Ax5a/

Turbary Woods is a volunteer-run, nonprofit sanctuary for Britain's birds of prey – everything from eagles to owls and even vultures. All funds go towards care for the birds.

In addition to standard daily opening hours with flying displays, they also offer Owl and Hawk Experience Days where you can get some hands-on experience learning about these powerful birds while knowing 100% of your funds are going straight back into care and maintenance for the birds.

Brockholes Nature Reserve

https://www.instagram.com/p/BiJZkYggWFD/

Just outside the city of Preston, you'll find Brockholes Nature Reserve, a 250-acre reserve with a floating visitor village in the middle of the wetlands. It features numerous paths and hides for viewing wildlife at a safe and unobtrusive distance, and their visitor centre offers a gorgeous lakeside restaurant, The Kestrel Kitchen.

You can walk around and enjoy the nature on your own, or opt for a variety of guided walks and training sessions (check their website for the most current details). If their Instagram feed is anything to go by, you'll definitely want to bring your camera.

If you're travelling with children, please note that they require cat visitors to be 7 or older.

Shop in Miller Arcade

visit preston england

Modelled on the larger Burlington Arcade in London, Miller Arcade is a Victorian delight. Constructed in 1899, the building has been well maintained and it currently serves as home to a variety of quirky shops and eateries (and a Subway, but we'll try not to hold that against it).

Fun fact : Miller Arcade appears in the 1962 British film, A Kind of Loving . The film also features a very young James Bolam and Thora Hird alongside June Ritchie and Alan Bates.

Visit a Unique Independent Bookshop, Halewood & Sons

visit preston england

While Preston does have a lovely Waterstones, I always make a point of looking for independent bookshops when I travel. Rather than buying t-shirts and trinkets, I try to buy a book everywhere I visit (okay, if we're being honest, it's usually more like 3 or 4).

Wedged in amongst rundown shops and restaurants on a busy street, it would be easy to pass Halewood & Sons by. That would be a mistake, though. How often do you get the chance to visit an independent bookseller that's been open since 1867? They specialise in rare and antique books, and even if you aren't in the market to buy a pricey first edition, it's still worth a visit. You never know what you'll find.

It's also worth noting there are two Halewood locations, each run by a Halewood brother – a family that's been in the business for generations.

Visit Some Historically Haunted Locations

Lancashire has a strong history of witchcraft and paranormal activity. If that's your thing, Preston is a great place to visit.

Samlesbury Hall

visit preston england

Samlesbury Hall is said to be one of the most haunted places in Britain, and numerous TV shows and ghost hunting teams have visited in hopes of recording the building's ghostly activity. The Great Hall is said to be the most haunted part of the estate, where wedding guests have reported bad feelings, people have felt slaps to the head, and some have seen mysterious shadows passing.

A variety of tours and events are offered, and advance reservations are strongly recommended. You can also stay overnight, if you dare.

Website : Samlesbury Hall

Chingle Hall

visit preston england

Though it's a private residence, Chingle Hall has long been famous for paranormal activity. Items in the kitchen are said to move on their own, lights go on and off randomly, and full body apparitions have been seen. Some believe it to be one of the most haunted dwellings in the whole of England (which is already a pretty spooky place).

You can learn more about Chingle Hall in Season 1, Episode 5 of Ghost Hunters HERE .

The Wellington Inn

visit preston england

Customers and employees of The Wellington Inn have reported all manner of strange activity over the years. Objects seem to throw themselves, electrical equipment malfunctions for no apparent reason, and one landlord even moved out after a violent bed shaking incident (that had nothing to do with a bit of nighttime company).

Since you've gotta eat somewhere, why not grab a bite in this supposedly haunted pub? They offer famous Lancashire pies, and their menu includes plenty of options for vegetarians and meat eaters alike.

Website : The Wellington Inn

The Lancashire Infantry Museum

visit preston england

Aside from being the largest repository of regimental history in northern England, this museum is housed in soon-to-be-decommissioned barracks. In addition to the odd unexplained bumps and sounds, it's said to be home to a young private who died outside the museum, but who retains some kind of attachment to an item in the displays.

Some have said that on stormy nights, an entire fleet of ghostly Roman soldiers have been seen marching towards the building – manifesting only from the waist up. Some familiar with local history think it might be due to the rise in ground level since Roman times.

Visit the Preston Docks

visit preston england

The Preston Dock was opened in 1892, but ships have been sailing into Preston for much longer, navigating up the River to load and unload in relatively sheltered, calm waters. In 1981, the port was declared uneconomical and closed (due to the high cost of dredging the river and the increasing sizes of modern ships). These days, it's a lovely place for a stroll.

Take a Walk Through Winckley Square

visit preston england

Winckley Square was originally established as an exclusive residential area for Preston's gentry. These days, the Georgian square is home to a number of insurance and legal offices, along with a few residential developments. The gardens in the middle, once privately owned, are now an open public park.

Ride the Ribble Steam Railway

https://www.instagram.com/p/BuLbS7xBVwh/

If you enjoy trains, don't miss the Ribble Steam Railway and Museum. Not only can you take a ride on one of their steam-powered locomotives, you can also have afternoon tea on one.

A standard day ticket includes entry to the museum and workshop, plus unlimited train rides. Special events (like afternoon tea or the spooky train in October) require separate booking. Check their website for the most updated schedule of events.

Visit Avenham & Miller Parks

visit preston england

Avenham Park and Miller Park are two lovely Preston parks that flow together (the bridge seen above marks the division). These two Victorian parks hint at Preston's booming past, and both have been extensively refurbished in recent years as the result of a multi-million pound Heritage Lottery project.

In recent years, artists like Oasis, The Spice Girls, and Natasha Bedingfield have performed in Avenham park, but on a more typical day, it's a lovely place for a picnic or stroll.

Check Out Harris Museum, Art Gallery, & Library

visit preston england

This stunning Neoclassical hall was inaugurated in 1893 – another example of something big and beautiful in Preston that was created during the boom of the late 1800s. The building alone is worth the visit, but it does hold incredible collections of natural history, costumes, and art.

If you enjoy the costumes in period dramas , check out their 6000+ costume collection. You can view some highlights online HERE .

The museum is also home to a 13,500-year-old elk skeleton dating back to the end of the last Ice Age. The elk was found by accident in 1970 when a man demolished an old bungalow to build a new home. Along with the elk, archaeologists discovered two carved bone points made by ancient hunters – offering the earliest evidence of people in northwest England.

In the event that you'll never make it to Preston, you can do a bit of browsing inside the museum using Google StreetView HERE .

Where to Stay in Preston, England

While there are loads of wonderful hotels in the Preston area (click HERE to search them all), we'll focus on some of the most unique and lovely options.

Winckley Square Hotel

visit preston england

This luxury hotel offers a variety of lovely themed suites, including The Secret Garden, The Study, Bond, and Mayfair. My personal favourite, though is The Library (above).

The hotel is within walking distance of the city's shopping and museums, but you'll need to get a taxi for some of the nature-oriented activities outside the city (or rent a car).

If you're in the middle of a long trip and you need to do laundry, condo hotels (aka aparthotels) are wonderful. They give you the convenience of a hotel room with a few extras – usually a small in-room kitchen, along with on-site laundry facilities. That's what you get with FG Hotels in Preston.

It's not a fancy hotel, but the addition of laundry facilities makes it an incredibly convenient option if you need it.

The Gibbon Bridge Hotel

visit preston england

Prefer an upmarket country hotel just a bit outside the city? Consider The Gibbon Bridge Hotel & Restaurant. It's 12 miles outside the city in The Forest of Bowland Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and you'll find it much easier to stay here if you're travelling by car. The hotel offers outstanding accommodations in beautiful surroundings, and you can enjoy serene peace and quiet once you leave the city for the day.
