best indoor places to visit in qatar

Exploring Doha is a must, but the modern capital isn’t the only part of Qatar worth a visit © Maja Topcagic / Stocksy United

The pint-sized nation of Qatar isn’t technically a one-city state, but there’s no denying that Doha , home to more than 90% of Qatar’s population, is the main attraction.

Yet the country’s modern capital isn’t the only corner of this Gulf nation that’s worth a visit. Venture beyond Doha to discover the shiny new sister city Lusail and a pseudo-tropical island escape or strike out into the desert to uncover glimpses of Qatar’s pearling past and unexpected natural wonders.

Here’s a quick guide to the best places for couples, families, or solo travelers to visit around Qatar.

Illuminated traditional houses and people in outdoor restaurants in the historical district of Doha.

See the sights and dine out in Doha

Doha’s rapid transformation from sleepy seaside settlement to glitzy Gulf capital is legendary. As the city’s futuristic skyline continues to expand, so too do reasons to visit, with recent years welcoming the striking National Museum of Qatar , the 3-2-1 Qatar Olympic and Sports Museum , and a gamut of international hotels, with a new metro system making it easier to get around.

Get a taste of Doha’s early days – along with regional culinary specialties – at the fabulously atmospheric Souq Waqif and then stroll along the waterfront Corniche to admire city and Doha Bay views. Marvel at the Museum of Islamic Art (inside and out) and seek out public art, mosques, and more in the Katara cultural village.

The skyscrapers of the newly-developing modern city of Lusail photographed at sunrise

Hop on the metro to visit Lusail

Just 20km (12.4 miles) north of downtown Doha and connected by metro, Lusail feels like an extension of the capital. But this coastal metropolis-in-the-making is actually a city in its own right. While still largely a construction zone, Lusail is already home to some of Qatar’s most striking architecture, notably the nation’s showpiece arena, Lusail Stadium, shaped like a traditional woven bowl; and Katara Towers, which integrates the traditional scimitar swords from the national seal into a pair of 36-story towers housing two luxury hotels. You’ll also find a marina with a pleasant promenade, the high-end Parisian-inspired Place Vendome mall, and more attractions in the making.

With the first line on the Lusail Tram (connected to the Doha Metro) opened in 2022, Lusail is easier than ever to visit via public transport.

Families should save time for Banana Island

Qatar’s only offshore island of note, Banana Island is just a 30-minute catamaran ride from Doha. This small, crescent-shaped isle is occupied entirely by the family-friendly Banana Island Resort Doha by Anantara. Stay in an underwater bungalow and you can (almost) imagine you’re in the Maldives or visit for the day and enjoy the island’s peaceful palm-studded strip of sand. Day passes include boat transfers and credit to spend at the resort’s restaurants and on watersports.

Uncover history at Al Zubarah and Al Jumail

Most people know Al Zubarah for its Unesco-listed fort, but Al Zubarah Fort was named for the thriving pearling port that now lies in ruins between the fort and the sea after being abandoned in the early 20th century. While the ruins are currently closed to the public, you can glimpse the town’s crumbling foundations from the entrance to the handsomely restored fort.

About 20km (12 miles) farther north, turn off the main road to explore the deserted village of Jumail. Founded in the 19th century, the coastal village was also abandoned following the economic boom ignited by Qatar’s oil and gas industries. Al Zubarah is a 90-minute drive northwest of Doha. It can be visited on an organized tour with the likes of 356 Adventures , but you’ll need a car to get to Jumail.

A hut in Al Khor at the end of a bridge that looks over some mangroves

History and nature meet in Al Khor

An hour’s drive north of Doha and accessible by public bus, the small coastal city of Al Khor isn’t much to look at, but it’s home to several attractions that make it worth a brief visit. Chief among them are the three stone watchtowers that stand along the coast. Built around 1900, the towers were used to monitor ships and guard access to the area’s main well, Ain Hleetan, which has also been preserved.

Just beyond Al Khor, a boardwalk takes you through a lush mangrove nature reserve to Bin Ghannam Island (also known as Purple Island), where shell middens have revealed traces of human activity dating back to the 2nd millennium BC. Farther north, the village of Al Thakira is a launchpad for mangrove kayaking tours.

Hit the beach in northeastern Qatar

The largely undeveloped and sparsely populated northeastern corner of Qatar offers a handful of attractions worth checking out if you’re planning to rent a car, beginning with the mysterious Al Jassasiya Rock Carvings near Al Maroona Beach (also known as French Beach), one of Qatar’s most pleasant public beaches. Farther north, Fuwairit Beach is being developed as a kitesurfing destination.

Perched on Qatar’s northeastern tip is Zulal Wellness Resort , a luxe modern retreat guided by traditional Arabic and Islamic medicine and one of the few places to stay in the region. The nearby port town of Al Ruwais lacks notable attractions, but its Shamal Corniche is a scenic spot for a sunset stroll.

Explore desert oddities in Zekreet

The small west coast village of Zekreet is the jumping-off point for visiting the Brouq Peninsula (also known as  Bir Zekreet ), home to attractions including US artist Richard Serra’s gigantic  East–West/West–East installation, which rises up between otherworldly rock formations. You can also check out the Film City ghost town, a recreation of a traditional village built for an Arabic TV series.

But tiny Zekreet, 90km (56 miles) from Doha, has a couple of sights of its own, including a restored historic mosque and Zekreet Fort, thought to have been built in the late 18th or early 19th century. Dismantled for reuse of the stone by local inhabitants, the fort’s foundations are all that remain. Zekreet has a few simple places to eat but nowhere to stay.

Southern Qatar is ready for adventure

The southernmost stop on the Doha Metro, the small city of Al Wakrah has a pleasant seafront souq (market) selling everything from honey, spices, and dates to perfumes and souvenirs. You can also take a stroll around the perimeter of the historic Al Wakra Fort, but it’s not currently open to the public.

From here, you can take a bus or an Uber 30 minutes south to Sealine Beach , one of Qatar’s most popular public beaches, with several dive sites close to the shore. The east coast road ends here, and the towering sand dunes of southern Qatar begin. Book an off-road tour to Khor Al Adaid , which takes you across mountains of sand to Qatar’s “inland sea”, a scenic tidal embayment that marks Qatar’s border with Saudi Arabia.

Similarly to northern Qatar, southern Qatar is typically visited on a day trip from Doha. However, this region has several accommodation options, including Sealine Beach Resort , a lovely spot for couples, and several rustic desert camps if linger.

Aromatic spices in Souq Waqif, one of the best Places To Visit in Doha, Qatar.

1. Souq Waqif

First and foremost, you absolutely need to add Souq Waqif to your list. It is not only one of the best places to visit in Doha, but it is also where I recommend basing yourself during your visit.

⫸ The Souq Waqif Boutique Hotel will set you up in the middle of all the action. You will be within walking distance of all of Souq Waqif’s bustling stalls and shops, and have easy access tot he Metro. The hotel itself has luxe, well-designed rooms, fast free wifi, a swimming pool, and super helpful staff. I can’t recommend it enough! BOOK YOUR STAY HERE!

Souq Waqif is one of the most iconic places in Doha, known for its lively atmosphere and bustling energy. Many shops stay open until 11pm, so it is even alive and awake into the night.

The souq’s architecture is a rebuild after a fire destroyed part of the original souq on the same spot. Wander through the narrow alleyways and busy streets full of spice shops, souvenir stalls, tasty cafes, and authentic restaurants.

The Pigeon Towers, one of the best Places To Visit in Doha, Qatar.

2. Pigeon Towers

The Pigeon Towers are stunning sand-colored columns found within the Katara Cultural Village.

These ancient structures, which were used for centuries to house pigeons, are a perfect example of Islamic architectural ingenuity. They were used by farmers to rise pigeons in order to collect their droppings for fertilizer, or for meat and eggs.

The towers are now an important part of Qatar’s cultural heritage. The towers are both beautiful and functional, with each one capable of accommodating thousands of pigeons. Read all about how to visit the Pigeon Towers here .

I couldn’t wait to see them strictly for their architectural beauty. I recommend visiting at sunrise or sunset for the best golden hour glow.

Pro Tip : If you prefer to take a tour, this tour in particular  stops at the Katara Cultural Village, where you can see the gorgeous Pigeon Towers as well as several of the sights below. It also features a traditional dhow boat cruise, too!  BOOK YOUR TOUR HERE!

Hours: 24 / 7 / 365 Fees: None.

Monica at the colorful Katara Mosque, one of the best Places To Visit in Doha, Qatar.

3. Katara Mosque

The stunningly detailed tiles of the Katara Mosque are reason enough to head to Katara Cultural Village . It is one of the most beautiful places to visit in Doha and frankly, one of the most beautiful mosques in the country.

Located directly next to the Pigeon Towers, this mosque was built in 2011. With its large blue dome, towering minarets and spacious interior, the Katara Mosque is a popular tourist attraction and a place for locals to come together for prayer.

Pro Tip: When visiting mosques in Doha, be sure to wear a  loose flowy kimono  to cover your shoulders, waist, and midriff. Keep a  sheer lightweight scarf  on hand for extra coverage (you’ll need to cover your head to enter mosques.)

Monica at the Golden Masjid, one of the best Places To Visit in Doha, Qatar.

4. Gold Mosque

Tucked away in Katara’s maze of buildings is another mosque made of shimmering gold tiles. As the sun rises higher in the sky, the mosque seems to glow brighter and brighter!

Smaller than the Katara Mosque, this site is no less stunning. It is hands down one of the best places to see in Doha.

5. Katara Amphitheatre

One of the highlights of Katara Village, the large amphitheatre is worth a visit. Even when no events are scheduled, visitors are welcome to stroll through the entrance and see the large open air theatre

The design is a blend of Islamic and classical Greek architecture all rolled into one, with the capacity to seat 5,000 people.

Built in 2008, the ampitheatre is centrally located in Katara Village. It hosts many of Doha’s world-class performances.

Hours: 24 / 7 / 365 except for ticketed shows. Fees: Free unless attending a performance.

6. Katara Cultural Village Cafes

One of the best aspects of visiting Katara Cultural Village is the plethora of tasty and trendy cafes on site.

Visit the popular ChacLate Cafe, where you can get fresh juice, Turkish Coffee, and treats like honeycake. Or, stop by my personal favorite breakfast spot, Chapati & Karak, where you can get cardamom spiced karak tea and chapati wraps with cheese or eggs or sweets.

The blue water at Katara Beach, one of the best Places To Visit in Doha, Qatar.

7. Katara Beach

If you love sand and sun, then you need to see the Arabian Sea while in Doha. Katara Beach is a quick and easy stroll from Katara Cultural Village, so it’s the perfect choice!

This stunning stretch of sand is perfect for relaxing with a book, swimming the bright blue waters, or just soaking up the sun on the warm, golden sand. This beach is the only public beach in Doha.

There are separate areas for men only, women only, and family visitors. And, you have plenty of water sports and rentals to choose from.

Katara Beach is a must-visit for anyone who is a mermaid at heart. Visit year round, but in the summer months, start early!

The geometric design of the Museum of Islamic Art, one of the best Places To Visit in Doha, Qatar.

8. Museum of Islamic Art

The Museum of Islamic Art (MIA) is housed in a stunning cube-like geometric design right on the water. The architect I. M. Pei specified that the museum must be built on an artificial peninsula near the traditional dhow harbor.

Inside, MIA is even more incredible. It holds Islamic art from across three continents, including old manuscripts, intricate metalwork, colorful textiles, and much more.

The artifacts date from the 7th century through the 20th century, and this is one of the most complete collections of Islamic artifacts in the world. You can’t miss it!

Pro Tip: A ticket to the Museum of Islamic Art will cost only 50 QAR, which is less than $14 USD. If you book tickets online, you can also snag entry to four other museums or sites too. Book in advance here .

Hours: Saturday – Thursday: 9am – 7pm; Fridays: 1.30 – 7pm. Fees: QR 50.

The Islamic Cultural Center, one of the best Places To Visit in Doha, Qatar.

9. Islamic Cultural Center

Across from Souq Waqif, you will likely notice a spiral shaped building towering up into the sky. This is the Sheikh Abdulla Bin Zaid Al Mahmoud Islamic Cultural Centre, or, Fanar.

Fanar was once the largest mosque in Qatar. And while it still functions as a place for prayer, this building also hosts religious and educational activities, even for visitors.

Tourists can learn about the Qatari lifestyle and history as well as try local coffee. Etiquette and courses on the Islamic faith are also available. But hands down, my top recommendation is to visit during Friday prayers.

100% of the mosques I have visited, even the heavily touristic  Sheik Zayed Grand Mosque  in Abu Dhabi, are strictly closed to visitors during prayer times. And understandably so.

Here, even non-Muslim visitors can attend Friday prayers led in English to learn about this deep and moving tradition.

Hours: Visit. 7.30am – 10pm. The welcome desk is open 7.30am – 1.30pm and 4pm – 10pm. Fees: Dependent upon which activities you choose.

The intricate details on the National Museum of Qatar, one of the best Places To Visit in Doha, Qatar.

10. National Museum of Qatar

One of the can’t-miss things to do in Doha is a visit to the National Museum of Qatar. The museum offers an immersive experience that takes visitors through the history of the region, from prehistoric times to the present day.

With interactive exhibits, stunning artwork, and informative displays, there is something for everyone at this world-class museum.

The architecture of the building itself is impressive, resembling a desert rose that blends seamlessly into the surrounding landscape. Whether you are a history buff or just like to learn, a visit to the national Museum of Qatar will not disappoint.

The rustic exterior of a shop at the Falcon Souq, one of the best Places To Visit in Doha, Qatar.

11. Falcon Souq

The Falcon Souq is technically part of Souq Waqif, but it is set apart into an area of its own.

Get a fascinating look into an important part of Qatari culture and heritage here. As one of the most popular places to visit in Doha, the souq is home to a variety of different types of falcons, including the highly prized Peregrine Falcon.

The birds are highly revered in Qatar, as well as in other Gulf countries. The Falcon Souq is a place where locals can not only purchase falcons but also buy food and visit the pet hospital. Tourists can learn more about the history of falconry here, too.

Hours: 7am – 1pm; 5pm – 9:30pm daily. Fees: None.

12. State Grand Mosque

The State Grand Mosque in Doha is an icon of Qatar’s Islamic culture. The mosque is known for its beautiful architecture, elegant mosaics, intricate carvings, and magnificent chandeliers.

As one of the most visited places in Doha, it’s an excellent stop if you want to learn more about Islamic culture and religion. When visiting the mosque, it’s essential to dress modestly (check my Qatar packing list for details) and remove your shoes before entering

Allow ample time to wander through the mosque and enjoy its tranquil surroundings. The State Grand Mosque in Doha is undoubtedly a must-see attraction and not to be missed!

Hours: Saturday – Thursday: 9am and 7pm; Friday: 2pm until 7pm. Fees: None.

A traditional dhow boat on the blue Persian Gulf.

13. The Persian Gulf from a Dhow Boat

The first time I saw the Arabian Sea, I was shocked at how blue the waters were. I had always pictured the orange desert dunes when thinking of the Middle East, and it just hadn’t occurred to me that the water would be so pretty.

One of the best ways to see the water is from a traditional dhow boat . See the Doha skyline from the water after a tour of the souks, mosques, and sites of the city.

Pro Tip : Consider, this Doha tour  for your traditional dhow boat cruise. The tour also stops at the Katara Cultural Village, mentioned above, where you can see the gorgeous Pigeon Towers and Katara Mosque!  BOOK YOUR TOUR HERE!

The white Al Koot Fort, one of the best Places To Visit in Doha, Qatar.

14. Al Koot Fort

If you’re on the way to the Falcon Souq, make sure to stop by the tall white Al Koot Fort, just a short walk away. Originally a police station and later a jail, it was rebuilt in the 1920s as a fort by Sheikh Abdullah Bin Jassim Al Thani.

Although the museum isn’t currently open, it’s definitely worth a quick visit while you’re in the area.

Hours: 24 / 7/ 365; note that the museum is currently closed. Fees: None.

This beach is one of the most picturesque locations in the city. It’s the perfect place to soak up the sun, take a stroll or a dip, or get active. Try your hand at beach volleyball, kayaking, or paddleboarding.

Don’t miss these tall colorful rocks if you are a fan of the Las Vegas artwork! This was one of my favorite places to visit in Doha particularly because of them!

The 31 Best Places to Visit in Doha, Qatar

From top cultural attractions to the arts to old souks and more, here are the best places to visit in Doha, Qatar.

This trading site is where Bedouin’s used to meet in ancient times. And today, it’s still one of the most exciting things to see in Doha!

Hours: Saturday – Thursday: 8am – 12:30pm; 3pm – 10pm. Friday: 3pm – 10pm.

Fees: None, unless you purchase goods!

Hours: 24 / 7 / 365

Fees: None.

Pro Tip: If you prefer to stay near the beach, consider booking the  21 High Street Residence  as your accommodations. Hours: 10am – 11pm, though hours can vary on different beaches.

Fees: QR 50 on weekends; QR 25 on weekdays.

15. Arab Postal Stamp Museum

If you’re interested in Arab culture and history, you should definitely add the Arab Postal Stamp Museum to your list of places to visit. Located in the heart of Doha, at the Katara Cultural Village, the museum showcases an impressive collection of stamps from various Arab countries.

The stamps depict a wide array of themes, from historical figures to natural wonders in the Arab world. One of the highlights of the museum is the section dedicated to Qatar’s postal history, which gives visitors a glimpse into the country’s development over the years.

17. Doha Corniche

Doha’s Corniche is a picturesque waterfront promenade with stunning views of the city skyline and the Arabian Gulf. It stretches for seven kilometers and offers visitors plenty of opportunities to indulge in leisurely walks, bike rides, and picnics with family and friends.

Enjoy the scenic views, take in the local culture, and escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.

The best time to visit the Corniche is in the early morning or late afternoon when temperatures are milder, and the crowds are less dense. It is a beautiful place to get a bit of exercise on your trip.

18. The Pearl Monument

While walking the Corniche, keep your eyes peeled for The Pearl – a large monument honoring Doha’s history as a pearl farming nation.

The large monument features a shimmering pearl inside an oyster. Visitors can stroll through the nearby park or take a boat ride along the nearby canal to admire the monument from afar.

My top tip for visiting the Pearl Monument is to go during sunset when the surrounding sky paints a beautiful backdrop against the gleaming exterior.

19. Aspire Park

Aspire Park is a must-see attraction when visiting Doha – and it is a far cry from what you’d expect to see in a desert nation. The lush green park, located in the heart of the city, is an oasis of tranquility and relaxation.

Aspire Park is renowned for its fountains, lakes, jogging tracks, and green grass. Aspire Park is also home to the famous Torch Doha Hotel, which offers breathtaking views of the park from its exclusive restaurant on the 47th floor.

Expect high-end designer brands, department stores, and popular fashion retailers. In addition to shopping, the mall also offers a variety of entertainment options such as a theme park, indoor skating rink, and movie theatre.

This beach is one of the most picturesque locations in the city. It’s the perfect place to soak up the sun, take a stroll or a dip, or get active. Try your hand at beach volleyball, kayaking, or paddleboarding.

For me, the most interesting thing about 974 Beach is the presence of a colorful, towering art installation by Ugo Rondinone. Creator of the famous Seven Magic Mountains , Rondinone created a similar installation for Doha here.

Don’t miss these tall colorful rocks if you are a fan of the Las Vegas artwork! This was one of my favorite places to visit in Doha particularly because of them!

Qatar Nightlife: 10 Best Doha Nightclubs & Bars in 2024

Lively, luxury, laid-back… these are three very different words that spring to mind when it comes to exploring the best nightclubs, bars and lounges in Doha. Practically all of the best nightlife in Qatar can be found in Doha, making it the place to enjoy your nights during your time in Qatar.

Are you visiting Qatar on a vacation, holiday or city break? Count down the days, hours, minutes & seconds until your trip with our CAN’T WAIT! Vacation & Holiday Countdown app   😊

Despite the restriction on public drinking, Doha offers a diverse nightlife that provides lots of enjoyment. Although Qatar’s capital is known for its ultra-modern skyscrapers and Islamic-inspired architectural masterpieces, the city’s nightlife includes rooftop bars, medieval-style retail areas, and even desert safaris.

Whilst our days of partying away until the early hours may be more infrequent than they once were, we still love to enjoy our evenings in vibrant cities. Sooo, bring it on Doha! But first…

Can you drink alcohol in Qatar?

It’s worth noting that Qatar is a dry country meaning that if it’s alcohol you’re after, you’ll only be able to purchase it inside tucked-away venues as part of a hotel complex or resort. In Doha, the public consumption of alcohol is strictly prohibited. So, no drinking in public, please.

How to stay out of trouble on a night out in Doha

Respect the laws of the land. Make sure you know when to stop drinking and stay inside the nightclub or venue until you’re sober. Kissing, touching, and other public displays of affection can land you in jail in Doha, especially if you’re single. You should also avoid same-sex intimacy in Qatar because it is not LGBTQ-friendly. Read this paragraph again!

So, what are the best nightclubs, bars and lounges in Doha?

With all the formalities out of the way, let’s get down to it. Here’s a closer look at some of the best nightclubs and bars in Doha that’ll keep the party going after you’ve dined at one of the Doha restaurants that we recommended.

Every night has a different theme (Latin on Monday, R&B on Tuesday, Arabic on Saturday, Slavic on Sunday, etc). Tuesday is Ladies’ Night. Their resident DJs are well-known in Doha, and they occasionally bring in famous guest DJs.
