Maasai Wanderings. Adventure in Tanzania with that “Special Something.”

' src=

*As seen in The Logbook. Issue 4.

Maasai Wanderings and their accommodation partner Nasikia Camps offer a range of safaris and unique Tanzanian experiences all specially designed for the traveler. The kinds of safaris on offer include family and honeymoon safaris, the best rated photo tours which include the opportunity to see wildlife and birdlife in a completely new way and many Zanzibar experiences.

maasai wanderings reviews

Donna Duggan, who founded the business with her late husband explains that they began the business in 2005. At the time Donna was an Australian nurse and her husband was Tanzanian, so they joined forces to fulfill their dreams and goals to showcase Tanzania and its beauty to the world. Maasai Wanderings has grown and diversified significantly since then, offering tours that last 7 to 10 days and have a unique edge over their competitors.

Donna explains that unlike many safari businesses that may have a set-criteria for their tours on which the traveler is merely a guest or passenger, Maasai Wanderings’ tours are very much led by and tailored for the client’s desires.

“As long as it is within the laws and permits of the National Parks,” she says, “Clients should feel like it is their safari and that it has been designed especially for them and tailored as such.”

TEAM. EXPERIENCE. PLANNING AND THAT “SPECIAL SOMETHING”.

This tailoring has to be achieved with absolute adherence to quality of service, value for money and cultural integrity. All of Maasai Wanderings ’ itineraries have been meticulously planned according to careful consideration to the amount of time needed to fully appreciate the adventurous surroundings offered by Tanzania. A big part of this is employing the right people in the team.

“Our mountain guides and team were all born in the Kilimanjaro region and therefore possess knowledge of the mountains that cannot be taught,” Donna explains, referring to their understanding of the behaviour of wildlife and patterns of vegetation that mean they can often see things that would otherwise be overlooked.  She continues, “We have a very high success rate on the Machame, Rongai and Shira routes on Kilimanjaro and continue to receive praise for our professionalism throughout all our itineraries.”

For sake of experience-quality as well as traveler-safety, the team at Maasai Wanderings often run extra field trip missions to confirm or establish new and improved paths for carrying out the tours. Donna is insistent that every tour itinerary provides the clients with the most enjoyable and culturally educating experience possible.

This includes training and staff are educated via continuous workshops on how to offer clients optimal service for their personal journeys and adventures. Staff are also handpicked at Maasai Wanderings, not only based on their knowledge and experience but also their personability and natural hospitality from arrival to departure. They know what factors are needed to give an adventure that ‘special something’.

maasai wanderings reviews

GIVING BACK.

Their range of safaris include luxury to budget adventures, working with holiday makers, corporate business people, wildlife adventurers and families. This diversity has given Donna and her team at Maasai Wanderings the opportunity to build many meaningful relationships across Tanzania to help them produce the best experiences for their clients.

“My husband was very talented at building relationships and our business was based on that from the start,” Donna reveals, “He was an incredibly humble and social person who enjoyed creating partnerships and relationships with people to learn from them. It was thanks to this that we were able to develop our business to where we are now.”

One of the notable things about Maasai Wanderings is what they give back. The business was established not only to provide employment for all those involved in it but to give opportunities to those who otherwise would not have received them.

“Our main objectives at Maasai Wanderings is the preservation of culture, wildlife and our goodwill projects,” Donna says, “We have arranged our company in such a way, that we are able to aid in these areas by funding various projects that we have initiated ourselves.”

maasai wanderings reviews

FUTUREPROOFING.

Businesses are having to keep themselves abreast of an increasing list of developments not only in terms of business acumen but new technologies as well.

Donna keeps herself up to date like any professional would, by constantly learning and investigating everything that she can regarding her industry.  Becoming a renowned expert in her country, the safaris and the hospitality sector. Also, as important to her is keeping an open mind and being able to let ideas evolve as they should. Creativity is a big, big part of the tours offered by Maasai Wanderings.

“We also keep abreast of what is trending via social media such as Instagram,” Donna, who spends at least an hour a day on Instagram to keep current, says, “But at the end of the day we are successful because we concentrate on what we are good at which is looking after clients and providing them with a once in a life time experience. Everything else flows naturally and positively from this.”

CHALLENGES.

There are the sorts of ongoing and persistent challenges that a safari company needs to address on a day to day basis, ranging across from operations to logistics. Donna explains that one of the main challenges that they’ve had from the start of setting up their business is continuous rule changes with such things as laws and taxation.

“It is something we have to keep on top of and we’re very good at doing it,” she says, “It’s a simple matter of learning whatever is required, applying it and being prepared for changes in the future.”

PHOTO SAFARIS.

Safari driven tourism is a highly effective way of generating revenue, interest and a social value for the wonders of Africa. Animals, plants and landscape included. Especially those tours that encourage people to take pictures that are more than simply selfies.

One of the safaris that could offer a simple but effective way of spreading a sense of value for the natural beauty of the African landscape and the animals and cultures that live there is the Photo Safaris offered by Maasai Wanderings.

This is the chance to spend a safari working with one of their wildlife photographers and photo tour leaders. These are not only some of the leading professionals in their field but are also just as passionate about wildlife as they are photography.  Irrespective of a client’s skill these tours ensure that a traveler will take something more away from the safari than just memories.

“These workshops are run by photo tour leaders who possess all the skills, patience, determination and good humor to provide the best experience for everyone attending,” Donna says.

Maasai Wanderings is a company based on ideals. Ideals of giving back and supporting local communities. Of learning about and engaging with the wonders of Africa’s natural heritage. Of gaining a value in our hearts for this wonderful place.

Great to hear- Im going w/ them in June!! Did you camp w/ sleeping bags? did you bring your own? any advice that you wished you knew before you went? Thanks!

Since I didn't go into much detail on Maasai Wanderings in my trip report, thought I'd comment on Mom's. I totally concur on Donna being AMAZING when planning this trip. I seriously sent out a 2 page word document when requesting price quotes. Donna's was by far the most detailed response. The itinerary document was very professional and she included a 2 page attachment answering all my questions in paragraph form. I also constantly switched everything from where we were going, how many people, how many days, etc right up until the time we left. We were on version 12 of the itinerary by the time we were done. Their price quote was right in the middle of all the others, but I went with them based on the comfort level I got from Donna. I also want to reiterate how much they help the local community. They went above and beyond with helping out the local maasai village we visited. As to David...I'm sure there are many very skilled guides out there, but I was seriously referring to him as superman by the middle of the trip. One of our favorite past times was spotting birds way far away and seeing if he could name them at that insane distance! He got them all...I think...we wouldn't know the difference if he was wrong I spose :)

As to the shillings, I had a different experience than mom. I had to go back and exchange more! Guess I'm not quite as frugal a shopper as she is ;) Also..they didn't seem to clear on calculating the exchange rate at the airport so I actually got better deals when paying in shillings.

LOL. Don't get scared. I'm just a VERY detail oriented person. Got that from Mumsy:) I just did like 3 months of research before sending out requests. Most of them in regard to specific places to stay...because I wanted places that were part of the experience...not just to rest your head. But a little of insight: Don't get too excited about Olduvai. I was excited about this as well. I was pretty interested in evolution in college but its not what you are envisioning. You don't get to go down into the pits or anything. If you are looking for this...you'd best voluteer for a dig through a college. (Rutgers in NJ in highly involved in this) Other than that..its a couple hours...check out the museum and listen to a somewhat informed lecture. Thats about as good as it gets. My personal recommendation...if you are looking for culture..seriously Lake Eyasi was amazing. Also I know its not on the general circuit but we REALLY are glad we visited the Iraqw tribe while in NCA. Its not on the circuit and something set up by our guide David. If you wanted that...probably have to contact Maasai Wanderings I would think. But I know people have mentioned that some of the village visits are a bit of show. It clearly wasn't the case here...and we are so glad our guide contacted Poli.

Thanks for the advice! I was debating Lake Eyasu as I am one of those with the opinion that the village tours tend to be a bit showy and I have read some good things about visiting the Hadzabe tribe. Too bad about Olduvai Gorge - now I won't have such high expectations.

Where was your favorite place to stay while on safari? Were you able to stay anywhere and hear wildlife at night? Thanks again for the responses! We are super excited for our trip even though it is not until September!

Hear wildlife at night? You sometimes can't sleep for it!

As to Oldupai. I too was disappointed. I had been before but my two companions had not so I suggested it. When I went you actually got down into the gorge and saw moving dunes etc.,

This time. A Hut, a talk, some interesting exhibits (I DID like the cast of the Footprints) and that was it. It was good to stretch the legs though.

Did you have to pay for the safari with Massai Wanderings by bank transfer? I'm not very comfortable with this. If so how much would you pay in advance?

Check w/ them- I believe they accept paypal now.

Check with them that they don't surcharge for Pay Pal.

I enjoyed reading your comments. What specific lodges can you recommend?

We stayed at Ngorongoro Farmhouse and we realy liked it. It has beautiful grounds with wonderful views. The rooms were huge and well appointed. The food was just okay. Later we stayed at Maramboi tented camp which has the same owner. I loved this property. The tents were permanent and had a wood floor and a thatched roof over the canvas. Our veranda overlookded lake manyara. There were tons of animals all around - zebras, giraffes, a family of warthogs right off the veranda. The food was very good, better than the farmhouse. The staff were very friendly and attentive, but then this was a much smaller property. We stayed at Sopa Lodge at Ngorongoro crater . It was a large, impersonal lodge. The rooms were nice, the food was good and the views were wonderful. We stayed at Kisima Ngeda which was also a permanent tented camp. It is very secluded and we drove for over an hour on a rough road to get there. It was on the shore of Lake Eyasi and had beautiful views. The food was very good and the staff was very attentive. Tents were very nice and well appointed. The only thing that kind of bothered us was that they did not have mosquito nets over the bed. Instead, while at dinner they would come and spray the tent. We would have felt better if we had the nets and were somewhat concerned about what chemicals they were spraying.

In the Serengeti we stayed at Nasikia mobile tent camp. This was the most rustic of our accomodations, but still very comfortable. The camp moved seasonally so the floor was a rubberized tarp on the ground instead of a permanent elevated platform. We had some heavy rain and it did not leak. It had solar lighting, a flush toilet and cold running water. There was an outside shower attached to the tent. The staff would bring hot water when we wanted to take a shower. The food was incredibly good and the staff very attentive. This is a very small, personal camp with about 8 tents. We had elephants, zebras and buffalo right outside our tent. We heard lions and hyenas at night.

I am thinking about joining maasai wandering.. it is the 8 day luxury safari. DId you have any problems?

Did you join a group safari, or is this a private safari? If you went on a group, how many people did they put in a 4WD?

I am on my own and am torn between going on a private safari ( cost, safety, whether it will be dull etc), versus joining them on a group. I had really wanted to go to lake eyasi to see the datoqa tribe hunt. So I wondered if MW will let me have a private tour for 2 days and then join other people

Also, in the lodges, do people stick to their own group?

Herd spotted with a hunting leopard!

This herd was spotted near the Mara river at crossing no 7. This hunting leopard was certainly waiting for the herd to let their guard down after the river crossing! The herd was quick to react, but the leopard was still able to catch one unlucky wildebeest.

Running herd spotted near Moru Kopjes

This herd was spotted near Moru Kopjes in the Serengeti National Park. The sound of thundering hooves continues in the central Serengeti as more herds arrive! The wildebeest are quickly making their way south for calving season in the Ndutu area of the Serengeti.

This fantastic video was taken by @yunus_mussa of @maasaiwanderings on the 27th of September 2023.

Huge crocodiles lurk during a Mara river crossing!

This herd was spotted crossing the Mara river at crossing no 7B. It doesn’t get more dangerous than this for the wildebeest with such huge crocodiles lurking! While some of the wildebeest will fall prey to the crocodiles, safety in numbers within a gigantic herd like this will ensure that majority make it across the river safely.

This fantastic video was taken by @jamalnjarita of @maasaiwanderings on the 10th of September 2023.

About maasai wanderings, about our safari vehicles, "fantastic safari company".

maasai wanderings reviews

My sister and I took an eight day safari with Maasai Wanderings. I cannot recommend them highly enough! They made all the arrangements and we didn't have to worry about anything. The places we stayed were much nicer than expected, there were no hidden costs, we saw so much amazing wildlife, communication with Donna and Abdullie was easy and they were very reasonably priced. Our guide (Goodwin) was top notch. He had a great eye for spotting wildlife and could make many of the animal calls. He was extremely knowledgeable about the area and the local culture. We also opted to do a few cultural excursions which were very authentic and a great way to learn about the local people. This company takes you to real villages. Nothing is staged or a tourist trap. Also, we loved going in rainy season. We were able to get so close to the animals without having a ton of other vehicles around us. I would highly recommend this company!

"A trip of a lifetime!"

Two of my friends and I used Maasai Wanderings to arrange our Tanzania Safari and we were totally blown away at how amazing it was. From the planning and budgeting, to pickups at the airports, to the amazing guide, Muba that we had the entire trip, to the spectacular camps, and then there was the animals! We saw so many species and so many of each species. I never expected to see so many elephants! We saw hundereds! And Muba could spot so many things for us to see and was an amazing driver. Our vehicle was perfect - loved how the roof raised up so we could stand to observe and photograph.

"Best of the East...Africa, that is"

Maasai Wanderings puts together a spectacular safari that I'll always remember. Driver/guides knew everything and could find anything you wanted to see. We stayed at Nasikia Luxury Camps which is a sister company of Maasai Wanderings. Accommodations for 5 star and dinning was right up there at the top. I highly recommend Maasai Wanderings to anyone planning a safari to Tanzania.

"Dreams do come true"

maasai wanderings reviews

What a wonderful safari. Maasai Wanderings organised the trip according to all requests and gave even more. The whole trip exceeded any expectations we had. The two drivers we had in Kenya (Antonio) and Tanzania Chris) were extremely respectful, intelligent, knowledgeable and ethical. We were impressed with their patience of our continual questions and requests for information. As well, we were very impressed with their consideration of animals, especially their knowledge of where the animals would be tracking. Several times, we parked at a distance only to have some other company drive too close or even park in front of us. They were excellent drivers on very difficult roads. They amazed us with their ability to drive and spot difficult to see game at the same time. Luckily for us we saw the big five on our two days of safari. Also all the employees at the camps we stayed at were extremely polite, friendly and interested in our experiences. They had a high level of skills in hospitality and made us feel very welcomed. Also, the accommodation at the Maasai Wandering mobile camps was extremely good, clean and comfortable even in the very remote circumstances. Thank you Maasai Wanderings for exceeding our expectations.

"Incredible Safari adventure"

maasai wanderings reviews

We had been thinking about a safari for several years, and in January decided to use Maasai Wanderings based on a friend's recommendation. The experience was incredible. We saw an unbelievable variety and number of animals including lions, zebras, elephants, hippos, cheetahs, leopards and buffalo. A buffalo was grazing outside our room at Rhino Lodge - so close we could hear him chewing the grass. Our favorite lodging was the Naona Moru tented camp. Our guide, Godwin, was highly knowledgeable and took a lot of time to explain the animals and their habits. We chose a private tour, which worked well for us. Godwin met us at the airport and drove each day. We stayed in 3 different lodges and 2 tented camps, which worked well and gave us a variety of experiences. I would definitely recommend Maasai Wanderings. Godwin accompanies a lot of professional photographers. We visited a Maasai village and brought gifts of school supplies and a few clothes. Truly the experience of a lifetime.

"Friend recommended, we couldn't agree more!"

maasai wanderings reviews

A friend recommended Maasai Wanderings for their high level of service, ease of communication when making plans, quality of guides, accommodations and value. We couldn't agree more! Donna customized our itinerary around our daughter's schedule as a volunteer in Mwanza and our wish list for safari. The amount of time we spent intimately observing wild animals exceeded our expectations and the thousands of photos we took bring back the emotions, sights, sounds and smells (the rain in the Serengeti smells so wonderful!) of this amazing family vacation. Our guide Godwin's experience and passion put us in the right place at the right time! Highlights include: Finding a leopard resting in a tree who spotted prey and then witnessing the kill - the circle of life. Listening to hyena laugh and lion roar from the comfort of our luxury tent camp, then observing the picked clean remains of their nighttime revelry when we left camp in the morning. Having a herd of elephants walk behind our parked truck and coming upon a journey of more than 50 giraffe, way too many to count. Not to mention the endless stream of migration from sun up to sundown! To decompress from our travels, Donna arranged a few days on the white sand beaches of Zanzibar. A perfect ending! We are grateful we seized the opportunity to use Maasai Wanderings when we joined our daughter in Tanzania.

"THE trip of a lifetime!"

maasai wanderings reviews

We spent 8 nights on a Northern circuit safari in Tanzania and it was just incredible! Our guide Muba was excellent.....he always seemed to be in just the right place at just the right time for spotting wildlife! He was knowledgeable, friendly and efficient....THE perfect guide! The standard of accommodation was excellent, we especially loved Naona Moru camp and Escarpment Lodge was sheer luxury! The vehicles are very spacious, but do show signs of wear and tear....hardly surprising when you see the state of the roads/tracks in the parks especially the dust and rocks in the Serengeti! The vehicles are also equipped with refrigerators and charging points....great when your camera battery is about to die! I wouldn't hesitate in recommending Maasai Wanderings....if (when!) we return to Africa they would be our first choice! Asante sana, Maasai Wanderings.

"What an amazing Safari to Tanzania"

maasai wanderings reviews

I travelled with an amazing group of people in June and visited the Serenegti National Park and adjacent areas. We explored the region in vehicle and on foot. The team with Masaai Wanderings and Nasikia Camps that we stayed in were just superb. Every moment was filled with awe and the knowledge of the guide was supreme. We travelled the extent of the Serenegti and in that time we saw lion and cheetah and countless elephant and antelope. The guide set us up with great stories and fascinating facts of animals, history of the area and then the beautiful surroundings of the landscape. His knowledge of the area is unsurpassed as he knew every little road and valley. He was kind and gentle and patient with the volume of questions asked. From the beginning of the journey, even in the planning phase, Masaai Wanderings and their team were so professional and courteous at all times. Every aspect was taken care of in great detail. Thank you to every team member and staff member for the amazing journey I enjoyed with you on this safari. Even the chefs at the various camps were amazing in what they produced on the table with every meal. Simply the best!

"Fantastic Tanzanian safari adventure"

maasai wanderings reviews

We had an amazing safari experience in Tanzania thanks to Perfect Africa and Masai Wanderings. I booked through Perfect Africa - Natalie was a pleasure to work with, she was friendly, responsive and answered my (many !) questions and accommodated my constantly changing itinerary. Our guide, Kurwa, picked us up after our pre-arranged Kilimanjaro hike, and we had a day safari in Tarangire park before staying at Sangaiwe Tented lodge. We loved the tented camp with amazing views over the plains. Food was excellent and plentiful. Our safari vehicle was a little worn inside, but we loved the stand up open top, great for animal viewing. Next on the itinerary was Ngorongoro Crater, followed by a stay at the beautiful Endoro Lodge. We then flew to northern Serengeti and the highlight of the trip - a few nights at Kaskaz Mara camp. This place was stunning - a real "out of Africa" experience. Amazing accommodation, food and service with a family-like atmosphere with the staff. Our guide John was very knowledgeable and happy to accommodate our wishes when arranging the game drives. The vehicle was fantastic - open sides, super comfortable with lots of legroom (and a beer-stocked fridge!). We were lucky enough to see the wildebeest migration while staying here. Overall, an amazing trip - I would not hesitate to recommend using Natalie Benson at Perfect Africa and Masai Wanderings for your safari in Tanzania.

"Closest thing to heaven"

maasai wanderings reviews

A group of 7 of us decided to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro & then to go on safari. The whole adventure was with Maasai Wanderings. For this review I will focus on the safari. The lodges where we stayed were fantastic, clean, and well-serviced. The meals provided, both by the lodges and the packed lunches, were nourishing and plentiful. The game viewing was outstanding and special thanks to Everest our game ranger who was a fountain of knowledge and had eyes in the back of his head! Having done a few game drives in the past this was by far the most outstanding experience. Maasai Wanderings were professional, organised and the staff were friendly, helpful, knowledgeable and very accommodating. I hope to return to this wonderful piece of heaven on earth and I would definitely go with Maasai Wanderings again.

"The Great Migration in June was absolutely amazing!!"

maasai wanderings reviews

This review concerns our private trip in Tanzania with Maasai Wanderings in June 2014 (2 weeks). It was our first time in this country. We came there mainly to enjoy wildlife, nature, landscapes and good sightseeing. And the least one can say is that we really enjoyed all what we saw. From Tarangire and its huge herds of elephants (we also spotted a leopard) to the magic landscapes and animals of N'Gorongoro Crater and the greatness of Serengeti and the millions of wildebeests and Zebras, everything has been above our expectations. And what about the cheetahs, giraffes, lion cubs playing, eagles, antelopes, buffaloes, hippopotamus, sunsets... Even meeting Masaai tribes and knowing a bit more how they live was interesting. Our guide was very kind. He gave us a lot of information on wild life and his country and always in a friendly way. He was moreover constantly ready to adapt to us (safaris time, pause for restroom, moving back or forwarding on demand to let us having the best possible view to watch animals)... We were initially a bit anxious experimenting tented camps but we finally decided trying Nasikia Tented Camp after being advised by Donna. It was a great, completely different of classic lodges and safe experience in immersion in the middle of the bush. Listening all the noise of the bush at night while you are in your bed is pretty existing. Our kids are still talking about those nights where we heard lions roaring, hyenas away. More generally you are closer to the nature in tented camp and still get all expected accommodations (true bed, private shower, private flush toilette, very kind staff, cooked meals etc.). Now that we know what tented camp is, if we have to go back one day in Tanzania for safaris we will book more nights in tented camps. Our final days to Zanzibar were a good idea to relax, chill out. Warm temperatures, sun, white sand, palm trees, turquoise water and amazing diving spots to continue your safari under water this time. We also did the 'spice tour' and 'dolphin tour'. To conclude, we saw a lot of wild animals, were perfectly guided (in a friendly atmosphere), experimented and enjoyed tented camps and finally relaxed in Zanzibar. Thank you again to all Masaai Wanderings' staff for this great and unforgettable experience.

About the company.

We have established Maasai Wanderings, not only to provide employment for ourselves and others, but to give opportunities to those who otherwise would not have received them. Our main objectives at Maasai Wanderings are preservation of culture, wildlife and our goodwill projects. We have arranged our company in such a way, that we are able to provide assistance in these areas by funding various projects that we have initiated ourselves. We offer luxury to budget safari adventures and utilize profits to maintain our own community projects in Tanzania.

We operate lodge safaris, culture safaris, walking safaris, treks and hikes with absolute adherence to quality of service, value for money and cultural integrity. All our itineraries have been meticulously planned according to careful consideration to the amount of time we recommend to appreciate the ‘adventurous’ surroundings.

Our Mountain Guides and Team were all born in the Kilimanjaro region and therefore possess knowledge of the mountains that cannot be taught. We have a very high success rate on the Machame, Rongai and Shira routes on Kilimanjaro and continue to receive praise for our professionalism throughout all our itineraries. Our Chefs are all college-trained and understand the art of creating delicious cuisine with limited resources while adhering to the ‘laws of hygiene’. Our Safari and Village Guides understand the behaviour of wildlife and patterns of vegetation and can impart knowledge that is not written.

We carefully maintain our itineraries, running extra field trip missions to confirm or establish new and improved paths for carrying out our itineraries in order to provide our clients with the most enjoyable and culturally educating experience possible. We present continual staff education workshops to offer our client optimal service for their personal journeys and adventures. At Maasai Wanderings we believe in handpicking our staff not only based on their knowledge and experience but also their ‘personability’ and natural hospitality from arrival to departure. They know what factors make an adventure ‘special’.

We invest in only quality equipment. Mountain equipment varies from National Park equipment which varies from Village equipment. Each set of equipment is specific to its intended use. We receive a lot of appreciation from clients who identify with our charitable objectives and we, in turn, appreciate any suggestions. We hope that you will appreciate our sentiments and support us in our journey! KARIBU SANA
