Colonial Glamour...but Tired...”

Nairobi Safari Club is a well located hotel. The surrounding streets are wide and the neighbourhood feels safe to walk in. Gloria Jeans Coffee House is a mere 5 minute walk and CJ's restaurant is also very close. The hotel has an "old school" charm to it and the rooms are very spacious. That being said...they are looking tired and could do with some upgrading and renovating e.g. in our room was a 2 seater pull out couch which was a nice surprise to find as it made relaxing in the evenings a little easier but...you could feel the frame on the arm rests and the springs in the seat. If you leant back in to it, the couch seat slid away from the back rest! WE did encounter a medical issue whilst staying there and the young girl at the front desk was very helpful.

Ok hotel, but over priced. Interiors are broken and not up to a resonable standard. When we checked in they were fully booked so we we’re placed in a Studi when had paid for a Suite, complained and really no response. But at midnight when coming back from dinner and the bed sofa where to be made out we were relocated to a double bed room. So then there was a room for us. Staff is very professional and helpful, we understand that they were fully booked. Got claim from Agoda, excellent service. Gym and pool area is ok. Breakfast ok and standard. Dinner was very good.

Its very loud over the night. Could hardly sleep thou i got moved to another room. Hotel should invest more in sound proof windows. Breakfast was good and hotel bar was also idle for an evening drink. All Staffs were friendly and helpful. Wil be bak in a few weeks. Hope to get a quieter room.

Kenya’s vibrant capital is also one of Africa’s largest cities. The starting point for most East African safaris, there’s plenty to see and do here, from admiring handsome colonial architecture to visiting the playful young elephants at Sheldrick Wildlife Trust.

At an altitude of 1,795m above sea level, Nairobi boasts a very pleasant climate all year round. Once a depot on the Mombasa/Uganda railway, the city has grown from a sleepy settlement built around a waterhole to a thriving metropolis abuzz with traffic, markets and tourist attractions.

If you’re a fan of the movie “Out of Africa”, be sure to visit the Karen Blixen Museum, located in the actual farmhouse where she lived for almost two decades on the peaceful outskirts of the Nairobi. Not far from here is the Giraffe Centre, established by a Kenyan family of Scottish descent, to bring the rare Rothschild’s giraffe back from the brink of extinction. Today, you can watch and even hand-feed some of these graceful giants, whose numbers have made a rebound thanks to the efforts of this organisation.

Further down the road within the Nairobi National Park is Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. Specialising in the care of orphaned baby elephants and rhino, this sanctuary opens for just an hour each day, providing visitors with an insight into conservation efforts and some great photo opportunities.

Should you wish to “give something back”, you can foster an elephant through the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. Alternatively, spend a day volunteering with some of the country’s most disadvantaged such as the kids at the Kibera Slum School or HIV-affected families at the Ngong Hills Women’s Centre & School.

Nairobi National Park safari | Travel guide 

Nairobi National Park is a national park in Kenya that was established in 1946 about 7 km south of Nairobi. It is fenced on three sides, whereas the open southern boundary allows migrating wildlife to move between the park and the adjacent Kitengela plains. 

The park is sometimes called Kifaru Ark, which means “Rhinoceros Sanctuary”. It is one of Kenya’s most successful rhinoceros sanctuaries, and it is one of only a few parks where visitors can be certain of seeing a black rhinoceros in its natural habitat.

Herbivores are also known to gather in the park during the dry season and the park itself brings a unique charm that sets it apart from other parks in Kenya with the proximity alone outside the capital city making it an easy addition to most visitors travel plans.

Why visit Nairobi National Park?

There are plenty of great things to do in Kenya and as Kenya’s first national park, Nairobi National Park has been a wild haven for the capital city since 1946. At 45 square miles, the park is small compared to most national parks. 

Size aside however, Nairobi National Park’s landscape hosts thousands of wild animals at home in various ecosystems. Primarily the park consists of open grasslands dotted with scrub and upland forests, making it an ideal habitat for many of Kenya’s native species. 

But given the relatively restrictive size of the park, its carrying capacity for predators is limited. Most are shocked to learn that Nairobi National Park is home to a nearly complete set of Kenyan species. 

Only leaving the most formidable creature, elephants, out of the landscape. Simply put the park is too small for their massive appetites, plus elephants would destroy the three-sided fence perimeter. 

Nairobi NP is known for healthy populations of cape buffalo, Masai giraffe, plains zebra, impala, ostrich, and hippo. And where there is prey, there are often predators! Within Nairobi National Park’s boundaries live prides of lion, spotted hyena, jackal, and even elusive leopard and cheetah.  

Visitors will also find numerous lions, hippos, giraffes, zebras, over 400 bird species, and many large herbivores. But the main highlight of Nairobi National Park is its resident rhinos. 

In fact, the park hosts one of the highest densities of black rhino in Kenya. Many view the park as the best location to observe this critically endangered species in the entire country, if not the world. 

Nairobi National Park is home to approximately 111 black rhinos and 24 white rhinos. These population numbers are a true success considering the park was void of rhinos until their introduction back in 1996. 

With over 500 bird species recorded, Nairobi NP probably gives Kenya’s capital the longest bird list of all cities in the world. The park’s substantial area of undisturbed grassland is of great importance for species such as the restricted-range Jackson’s widowbird, which breeds here regularly after good rains. 

Other grassland birds include ostriches, secretary birds and bustards. Nairobi NP is a popular birding destination and it’s easy to book a full or half day guided birding trip at short notice.

The park’s predominant environment is open grass plain with scattered Acacia bushes. The western uplands of the park have highland dry forest with stands of Olea africana, Croton dichogamus, Brachylaena hutchinsii, and Calodendrum. 

The lower slopes of these areas are grassland. Themeda, cypress, Digitaria, and Cynodon species are found in these grassland areas.

Here are some other activities which visitors can consider during their African safari experience in Nairobi National Park:

• Nairobi Safari Walk: Explore wildlife on foot, an authentic and economical means of exploring wildlife in Nairobi National Park and the bomas of Kenya. Nairobi safari walk charges range from KSH 125 (USD $1.1) for a child to KSH 215 (USD $1.86) for an adult.
• Photography safari tours: Visitors on a photo safari CAN share a luxury photography tour with like-minded individuals and capture their favourite moments.
• Sightseeing tours: This is best to see the hippo pools, giraffe center, day tours or early morning game drives in private vehicles. Guests can tour Nairobi National Park and visit the animal orphanage as well. The park also contains a historic ivory burning site. 

Visitors often enjoy combining their safari adventure with some quiet downtime on Kenya’s best beaches , a perfect end to their African adventure. 

How to get to Nairobi National Park ?

By plane .

Safari-goers flying from Europe or North America to Kenya usually arrive at Nairobi – it’s the largest hub for most transport (including flights) in the region. 

The main airport is Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO), which is located 15km/9mi southeast of Nairobi for visitors wondering how to get to Kenya .

Kenya’s second international airport is Moi International Airport (MBA), which is 9km/6mi west of Mombasa and a Kenya visa will most likely be required to enter the country.

Nairobi National Park is located 9km/ 5mi south of Nairobi. The park is usually visited as a half-day or full-day trip from a hotel in the city. 

Getting to the city of Nairobi is easy – it’s one of the biggest and busiest transport hubs on the continent. International flights arrive in Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO), 15km/9mi southeast of Nairobi.

Many factors impact Kenya safari prices including the cost of the park entrance fee. Prices per person per day:

• USD $43 per adult non resident per day
• USD $25 per child under the age of 12 years old

The gates into Samburu National Reserve open at 6am and close at 6pm.

If you keep to park rules, you can stay with the animals as long as they are not disturbed by your presence. 

Accommodation at Nairobi National Park

Accommodation in Nairobi NP includes Nairobi Tented Camp, is the only lodging that is situated inside the park, and this Tier 2 tented camp is reminiscent of those used by early explorers in Kenya. 

With only eight guest tents, the camp gives you a sense of being in the remote African bush with all of the necessary conveniences, such as full bathroom with bucket shower, private veranda, comfortable bed and much more, all set amidst its wildlife ecology.

Rates mainly depending on the season and type of accommodation. Carrying a small amount of Kenyan currency , the Kenya Shilling (KES) is recommended to pay for groceries and smaller items where credit cards aren’t accepted. 

Lodges are exclusive and luxurious with views amongst the most spectacular in the world along with world-class service, incredible food, all luxury amenities, simply ideal for the perfect honeymoon location. 

A luxury option worth considering is the Emakoko, a family-owned and operated 10-room lodging that is situated on 15 acres of land bordered by the Mbagathi and Emakoko Rivers. The other Tier 2 accommodations on the outside of the northern fence zone of the park are Ole Sereni Hotel and African Heritage House.

Ole Sereni Hotel features 134 guest rooms and suites with modern amenities, such as LCD television, air conditioning, complimentary internet, and the suites are specially designed to meet the needs of the business traveller in East Africa. 

African Heritage House is a six-room gallery-house that takes you through a journey of African cultures with an eclectic collection of art, textiles and varied handcrafted furnishings.

Campsites 

There are a number of affordable camping sites offering cheaper camping options for travellers on a budget including Nairobi Tented Camp.  

Campervan 

Guests on a self-drive safari with a campervan can make significant savings by sleeping in their vehicle. 

Bars/restaurants/amenities

Lodges will typically have all meals and drinks included in the lodge package.

Day 1 Nairobi

Upon arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in Nairobi, you’ll be welcomed by a Nature Expeditions representative and transferred to Windsor Golf & Country Club. Spend the afternoon playing golf at the club. Dinner on own arrangements. Overnight at Windsor Golf & Country Club (bed & breakfast)

Located on the outskirts of the city center, about 14 km away, is the Windsor Golf and Country Club. It’s most famous for its 18-hole golf course set by international standards. One of the most lavish hotels in Kenya beckons the city visitor to its country locale and Victorian decor by offering standards of excellence and quality of service to go with it. The Windsor offers a range of services, from accommodation, fine dining, conference, and banqueting facilities to sports and recreational activities. Day 2 Nairobi

After breakfast, leave for Sigona Golf Club. Spend the whole morning playing golf. After lunch, drive back to your hotel and spend the rest of the day at leisure. Dinner on own arrangements. Overnight at Windsor Golf & Country Club (bed & breakfast).

Sigona Golf Club

The very lovely Sigona Golf Club is about a fifteen-to-twenty-minute drive northwest of Nairobi heading towards Lake Naivasha, sitting almost halfway between Nairobi and Limuru. The Club has a beautiful eighteen-hole country-style golf course which has become very popular with residents and visitors.

It has a fine reputation for having some of the most beautiful fairways in Kenya. Sitting near the Rift Valley at an altitude of 6,600 feet (2200m), Sigona receives more than average rainfall. The Kikuyu grass keeps the course looking lush and verdant year-round. The green keeper tells: “any player can use almost any golf club, from his driver to his sand wedge, off these fairways”. The course is very hilly and most of the eighteen tees are elevated. It is one course that will test your golf skills along with your physical conditioning. Sigona provides a tough but very pleasant 18 holes of golf.

Day 3 Nairobi

Breakfast at the hotel and depart for another golf-filled day at the Karen Golf and Country Club. Drive past the Nairobi National Park and proceed to the Karen area. Considered by some to be one of the prettiest courses in Kenya because of its profusion of flowering trees and bushes, Karen Golf and Country Club should never be missed out. It is certainly one of the top 18-hole championship courses in the city (Yardage 6893 Par 72-18 holes.) You will most definitely enjoy your golfing here and will remain with fond recollections. Have lunch at the Karen Golf and Country Club, and then visit the museum of Karen Blixen, the author of Out of Africa before returning to the Windsor Golf and Country Club. Dinner on own arrangements. Overnight at Windsor Golf & Country Club (bed & breakfast).

Karen Golf & Country Club

Home of the Kenya Open 2004 and 2005. The course is next to the house of Karen Blixen – the author of “Out of Africa” and situated in the colonial suburb of Karen. Karen Country Club is a delightful course to play. You will most likely think back on your round of golf here, with fond recollections.

Day 4 Nairobi/ Aberdares

After an early breakfast at the Club, depart for the drive to Nyeri and on arrival, proceed to the Nyeri Golf and Country Club for Golf and lunch. Later drive to the Outspan Hotel. Dinner and overnight at Aberdare Country Club [Full Board]

  Nyeri Sports Club

Nyeri Sports Club is the second oldest course in the country, founded in 1910. This 9-hole course is laid out in a superb setting and offers exquisite scenery. While standing on the tee of the 6th, Mt Kenya can be seen looming above the green giving a breathtaking view of nature in all its glory. The greens are well bunkered with both sand and grass traps. The roughs are the highest you will find anywhere as the layout skirts around a thick forest of very tall evergreens. Add to this mixture a stream and a valley, and you have the recipe for a difficult game of golf. Nyeri’s golf course is very pretty indeed and highly recommended for play for the ardent and the family golfer.

Day 5 Aberdares/ Mount Kenya

After breakfast drive to Nanyuki arriving at a buffet lunch at the famous Mount Kenya Safari Club, founded by the late film star William Holden. The afternoon is spent playing golf at this prestigious club, which sits on the Equator facing Kenya’s highest mountain, snow-capped Mount Kenya. This is the only golf course where you can play golf in the north and south hemispheres at the same time. Dinner and overnight at Mount Kenya Safari Club [Full Board]

Mount Kenya is an experience that the visitor must include in his or her itinerary. Nowhere in the world do you come face to face with one of nature’s greatest anomalies – a snowcapped mountain lying on the equator! This exclusive rich man’s retreat opened in 1959. Even though this is a 9-hole pitch and putt, composed entirely of par 3 holes, it is absolutely brutal. While the course is laid out in one of the most beautiful and serene settings in Africa, you have to be very accurate. The water hazards are many and coupled with the splendid views of Mount Kenya from virtually every hole on the course with the variety of flowers and birds decorating it, the golfer is sure to leave Mt. Kenya with lasting memories. Play on the North and Southern hemispheres at the same time.

Day 6 Mount Kenya/ Nakuru/ Naivasha

After breakfast morning drive via Thompsons Falls down the floor of the Great Rift Valley escarpment to Lake Nakuru National Park, a protected game sanctuary for endangered species such as the Black/ White rhino, and Rothschild Giraffe among other usual game such as the leopard and Lion. The park is world-renowned for its millions of pink Flamingoes found around the lake. Picnic lunch is served in the park. Afternoon game drive. Thereafter proceed to the rift valley lodge arriving there in the early evening. Dinner and overnight at Great Rift Valley Lodge.

Day 7 Naivasha

Breakfast at this serene lodge and then enjoy a round of golf at Green Park. Lunch at the lodge. The rest of the afternoon will be spent with another round of golf or leisure to enjoy the many optional activities offered by the lodge (at an extra cost), for example, the Eburru forest, a boat trip to L. Naivasha, or a visit to the crescent island. Dinner and overnight at Great Rift Valley Lodge

Rift Valley Golf Club

The yardage is 6580 (6017 M) par 71-18 holes. Although still taking root, the course looks set to earn major international kudos for its spectacular setting and challenging character. The first player to break the 71 pars here, the Irish professional David Jones, described it as the best young course he has ever played on. The Thomas Fjaasd-designed course is a pleasure to play for the golfing tourist. Stunning views and lush greens will make your round of golf a special one

Day 8 Naivasha/ Maasai Mara

After breakfast, the morning drive to the Rift Valley escarpment to Maasai Mara Game Reserve arriving in time for lunch at Mara Leisure Camp . Afternoon game viewing drive until sunset. Dinner and overnight at Mara Leisure Camp

Day 9 Maasai Mara

Spend a further day in Mara. During your full-day game drives, you have the opportunity to explore this great reserve in depth. You may see elephants, giraffes, pride of lion, and thousands of impalas, topi, grants, and Thomson’s gazelle. The Mara is the scene of the annual migration of millions of wildebeest up from the Serengeti plains in search of water and grasses. All meals and overnight at Mara Leisure Camp

Day 10 Maasai Mara/ Nairobi/ Depart

After breakfast depart for the drive to Nairobi arriving in time for a farewell lunch at the Carnivore Restaurant. Afternoon transfer to JKIA for your homebound flight.

We are looking to grow our team and engage a highly motivated and passionate Director of Sales and Marketing who will work closely with the team to drive results and deliver on hotels strategy.  This position will be based in Nairobi, Kenya. 

The Director of Sales and Marketing will work closely with the Director of Revenue in expanding market share as well as increase and drive revenue growth. Reporting directly to the General Manager, this role is crucial for shaping and executing a robust sales strategy that aligns with the overall business objectives. The ideal candidate will possess extensive experience in sales and hospitality management, with a proven track record of delivering results in a competitive market.

In this role, the Director will oversee a sales team of five professionals specializing in MICE, FIT, Groups, and Leisure markets with a focus on the USA, Africa, India, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia markets. The Director will work closely with the team to identify and capitalize on business growth opportunities, maintain strong client relationships, and stay ahead of industry trends. Additionally, the Director will be responsible for forecasting sales, setting performance targets, and ensuring the team's efforts are strategically aligned.

Beyond sales, the Director will also lead a marketing team of four professionals, providing guidance and ensuring that marketing initiatives are effectively executed. Collaboration with the Revenue team will be essential in developing and refining pricing strategies that meet the business's needs while remaining competitive on a global scale. The Director will work to ensure that all sales and marketing efforts are integrated into a cohesive strategy that supports the hotel's overall business objectives.

The successful candidate will have a strong leadership presence, with the ability to inspire and manage a diverse team of sales and marketing professionals. A deep understanding of the luxury brand market and the ability to drive revenue growth will be critical in enhancing the hotel's reputation and market position.

Ultimately, the Director of Sales and Marketing will play a pivotal role in maximizing revenue per available room (REVPAR) and growing the hotel's market share. This role offers the opportunity to make a significant impact on the business's success and requires a candidate who is both strategic and results-oriented

As part of your role you will be accountable for:

• Steer the achievement of the rooms and catering sales budget
• Support the leadership in the development of sales and marketing plan and budget presentation
• Develop and implement effective sales strategies for all verticals MICE and Leisure including individuals, families, and groups, in alignment with the hotel's overall sales objectives.
• Support team to create and build and maintain strong relationships with key industry partners in travel and business for both luxury and corporate and the individual, family and group travelers.  
• Establish strategy to grow and generate business opportunities and increase market share with key industry partners.
• Carry out extensive market research to analyses the preferences and needs of the market and establish strategies to ensure the hotel reach is achieved in both local and international markets.
• Proactively engage with existing and prospective clients, including conducting site visits, participating in trade shows, and hosting familiarization trips, to showcase the hotel's unique offerings and amenities.
• Lead sales team to build an extensive network of contacts, building relationships to drive high yield business from all market segments into the hotel.
• Plan and attend trade exhibitions, collection reviews, road shows and sales trips to maximize the brand coverage Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club  optimizing the ROI of short, medium and long term business for the hotel
• Work in partnership with revenue team to drive distribution through local partners, responding to market trends and consumer demand
• Work with operations to ensure service delivery meets required standards across partnership agreements
• Work closely with marketing team to ensure the brand deliverables and hotel  marketing strategies are met
• Steer the formation of the annual department budget, monitor departmental performance and report rationale for all variances of actual revenues achieved versus budget and recommending and implementing appropriate actions
• Prepare and present and coach sales team on how present persuasive sales proposals, contracts, and presentations to clients, addressing their specific requirements and promoting the hotel's value proposition.
• Coordinate with various departments within the hotel, such as reservations, operations, and events, to ensure seamless execution and exceptional guest experiences.
• Support strategic department planning and development
• Coach, mentor and develop sales team to ensure they are well supported and empowered to perform in their roles
• Act as a brand ambassador, representing the hotel by maintaining constant contact with stakeholders, including clients, guests,  key industry partners, and steer the regional account management for luxury partnerships agreement: examples (AMEX, FHR, Virtuoso, Traveler Made etc.

Qualifications and Experience

• Master’s degree in hospitality management, focus on Sales and Business development
• Proven track record of a minimum of five (5) years in luxury hotel sales , with a demonstrated ability to achieve and exceed management's expectations. (International exposure most welcome)
• Take on tasks in addition of the ones stated, with a positive can do mindset
• Be a brand ambassador at all times, ensure brand integrity and clarity are maintained
• Model the company's culture, vision, mission and core values at all times
• Maintain positive relationships with all guests, vendors, colleagues and clients within travel networks
• At all times, represent Fairmont in Kenya in a professional, courteous and efficient manner
• Excellent communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills to effectively engage with clients and build long-term relationships.
• Good presentation and proposal development skills to showcase the hotel's unique offerings and value proposition.
• Proficiency in using Opera and other sales tools to track leads, manage accounts, and generate reports.

W ith a mix of ethnicities and nationalities worldwide, Nairobi , the capital city of Kenya, warmly embraces all her visitors and works to make you at home quickly. Yet despite having a space for everyone who visits, Nairobi still sets itself apart and offers a unique vacation to all its visitors.

If an authentic safari experience is on your bucket list, Nairobi is definitely worth considering. Here are some recommendations to make the most of your trip to Kenya.

The Nairobi Culture

Nairobi is a busy city just like any other city in the world. The streets are bustling as ever and there are tons of places to visit and see. As a Nairobian tourist, it would help to learn a few Swahili words. “ Hujambo ” for greeting or “ Habari yako ”, “ Karibu ” for “welcome”, “ asante ” means “thank you”, “ pole ” means “sorry”, and “ tafadhali ” means “please”. See the incredible thing about Nairobi, nobody expects a foreigner to be fluent in Swahili. Throw in one of the above words and continue your speech in English and that’s more than enough.

Beyond language, politeness is paramount in Nairobi. Tip your servers in the restaurants when you can. Always start all your conversations with greetings and don’t leave too many leftovers . Wasting food is looked down upon in Kenyan culture.

There is no strict dress code in Nairobi, much less for a visitor. Fridays in Nairobi are spent socializing in malls, bars, clubs, and or at restaurants for tea or coffee. If you want a never-ending nightlife, find your way to the Westlands . Indulge in some club-hopping before you retire for the night.

Things To Do In Nairobi

About an hour from the city center, you will find Nairobi National Park. Enjoy an authentic safari experience in the savannah grassland in a park teeming with lions, zebras, gazelles, giraffes, rhinos, wildebeests, and buffalo. The only animals you won’t find here are elephants. It’s an incredible sight to watch the wildlife in their natural habitat with the city’s skyline as a backdrop.

In addition to Nairobi National Park, the city has many animal sanctuaries in the region that are open to the public. Many endangered species of animals like Sokoke cats, buffalos, ostriches, flamingos , hyenas, blue wildebeest, rhinos, hartebeest, waterbuck, common warthog, and black-backed jackal can be seen – both at the sanctuaries and on safari excursions. In addition to endangered animals, some sanctuaries house endangered plants.

2. Explore Maasai Market

Immerse yourself in Maasai culture at this incredible market that changes its location every day of the week. This is in keeping with the Maasai nomadic culture. This market is a must-visit as part of the Nairobi experience. Stroll through the market and experience vibrant colors in beadwork, woven shukas, and house ornaments all handcrafted by the Maasai people.

3. Visit Nairobi National Museum

Enjoyed even by non-museum fans, the Nairobi National Museum is an excellent showcase of Kenya’s history. Located within the city, the museum is a popular destination and easily accessible. Besides Kenya’s history, the museum also takes you through a journey of human ancestors. Explore the snake park within the museum and the beautiful botanical garden.

4. Visit the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust Elephant Orphanage

Located right next to the Nairobi National Park, David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust is one of the animal sanctuaries that will be the highlight of your trip to Nairobi. Here you will find the most adorable baby elephants. Watch as their caretakers bring them out, feed them, and play with them. Your heart will melt at the bonds between these baby elephants and their caretakers.

5. Have breakfast at the Giraffe Manor

Can you imagine having breakfast while petting and feeding giraffes? The Giraffe Manor in Nairobi is home to the critically endangered Rothschild Giraffe. Founded in 1979, this sanctuary is one of Nairobi’s greatest gems. Meet and learn the names of the welcoming giraffes and take as many pictures as possible with these lovely creatures.

Kenyan Food You Gotta Try

Kenyan cuisine is inspired by over 44 tribes in the country of Kenya. Over time, these meals have made their way through the country and have become staples in households everywhere.

Foodies will find a haven in Nairobi as it offers dishes from just about every part of the world. From delectable and spicy Mexican dishes to creamy pasta, Kenyan dishes have made a name for themselves and serve as part and parcel of a Nairobi experience.

Sample Ugali , a meal made by adding maize flour to boiling water until it hardens. It pairs well with stews and vegetables, especially collard greens Kenyans love to call Sukuma Wiki (push the week). Ask for Pilau , a delicious traditional cinnamon, ginger, and garlic. Try chapati , a Kenyan flatbread inspired by the Indian naan. Vegans will love Kenyan cuisine for dishes such as githeri (a mix of maize and bean), mokimo (pounded potatoes, maize, and greens), matoke (cooked green bananas), and Maandazi , a sweet treat made with leavened flour.

Safety Tips

As with any big city, Nairobi has its fair share of security issues. Here are some tips to keep you safe as you visit:

• Always keep your valuables close to you. Whether it’s your handbag, backpack, or wallet, make sure it is well-kept. There are pickpockets and tourists can make for an easy target.
• Don’t walk alone at night – for the most part, Nairobi taxis are pretty safe. When you are out at night, it is safer in a taxi or any vehicle than walking alone. For more safety, you can use ride-hailing services like Uber or Bolt to navigate your way through the city.
• Do a bit of research about Nairobi before arrival. This will familiarize you with the city, which should make your exploration much safer.
• Stay connected and reachable at all times. Stay online and inform your loved ones of your itinerary and whereabouts every day. Buy a local SIM card for your phone to ensure you have a reliable connection throughout your stay.

The 2024 LOOP Safari Gravel Series Set to Take Place On August 24th

All is set for the last leg of the 2024 LOOP Safari gravel series, set for Saturday, August 24 th at the Vipingo Ridge, Kilifi County.

The leg will mark the conclusion of the 2024 LOOP Safari gravel series which kicked off earlier in the year at Tatu City, in February, before moving to the hills of Iten in March and hosting the first ever UCI Gravel series event at Hell’s gate in June, attracting over 1000 cyclists from across America, Europe, and Africa.

Speaking during a ceremony hosted to celebrate the winners of the previous leg in Naivasha, Eric Muriuki, CEO LOOP DFS, said: “The LOOP Safari Gravel Race Series has provided an excellent platform for our riders to showcase their skills and determination. We are proud to celebrate the Naivasha winners and eagerly anticipate the final leg in Vipingo. With its unique course and scenic beauty, Vipingo will offer an unforgettable finale to this remarkable series. We invite all the winners and cycling enthusiasts to join us for this exciting conclusion of the first season of the series.”

A total of 10 professional cyclists in both the men and women 120 km LOOP category, as well as 3 clubs who emerged winners during the third leg of LOOP Safari Gravel series in Naivasha, were awarded during the ceremony.

The top three clubs including Black Mamba Development Squad, Ariya Finergy Solar Vortex and Kenyan Riders were awarded prize money of KES 150,000, KES100,000 and KES75,000 respectively.

In the men’s 120 KM LOOP category, Jordan Schleck, Eric Muhoza and Edwin Kieya were awarded KES 20,000, KES15,000 and KES10,000 respectively for the top three positions. Xaveline Nirere, Claudette Nyirahabimana and Mary Aleper were also awarded for the top three positions in the women category receiving KES 20,000, KES15,000 and KES10,000 respectively.

The series has attracted support from various corporates, with Huawei Kenya sponsoring the prize money for the Naivasha and Vipingo legs as well as the overall series rewards.

Jordan Schleck, who triumphed in the Men’s 120 km LOOP Category said; “The Naivasha leg of the series was both challenging and rewarding. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to refine my skills and compete with fellow enthusiasts.”

Hanifa Said, remarked, “As Team AMANI, we congratulate all the winners and look forward to having them compete in the last leg of the series in  Vipingo for a  perfect finale to this thrilling series. The previous legs have highlighted endurance, skill, and sportsmanship. We are certain the Vipingo leg will provide an unforgettable experience for all participants.”

The Vipingo race promises an action-packed experience with its challenging gravel roads and breathtaking views of the stunning Vipingo Ridge. 

The LOOP Safari Gravel Series is organized by AMANI Project, with LOOP DFS as the title sponsors and Huawei as the prize money sponsor. It features three categories including 20KM for amateurs, 60KM LOOP for cycling enthusiasts, and 120KM LOOP for professional cyclist, attracting both local and international riders.
