Pop Will Eat Itself And Jesus Jones Announce 2024 Tour
By Joseph Earp
UK band Pop Will Eat Itself are heading down under next year, with support provided by Jesus Jones . The alt-rock outfit’s greatest hits tour will visit Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth in late February and early March 2024.
Pop Will Eat Itself came to prominence in the mid 1980s. Their first record, Box Frenzy , won acclaim, but it took a few years before the band hit the mainstream. Their second album, 1989’s This Is the Day…This Is the Hour…This Is This! , is widely considered their best, and hit the number 24 slot in the UK albums chart.
Pop Will Eat Itself – ‘Ich Bin Ein Auslander’
The band have only toured Australia intermittently – their last tour was back in 2014, and that marked the first time they hit the country in almost two decades.
Support act Jesus Jones were another mainstay of the late ’80s and early ’90s alt-rock scene. The group are best known for their 1990 single ‘Right Here, Right Now’, which became an international success. Their 1989 debut album Liquidizer is generally regarded as their best, drawing on everything from techno pop to hip hop.
Both bands have indicated they’ll be playing their best known songs on the tour.

POP WILL EAT ITSELF: AUSTRALIAN TOUR INTERVIEW
- AustralianMusician
- November 6, 2017
- Features , Interviews
Pop Will Eat Itself Interview by Baz Bardoe Pop Will Eat Itself. It was a stark prophecy in the NME that gave one of England’s most enduring and successful indie acts its name. And it has proven very true. Popular music is feasting upon the carcass of its past glories. The charts are full of songs performed by muppets and written and produced by committees. In the age of lame, the re-emergence of the defiantly innovative PWEI was almost a necessity. But let’s back track a little. PWEI officially came into existence in 1986, but the original members had all been playing in bands for some while. Early in their career the band decided to combine dance and hip hop beats with guitar. They laced their lyrics with plenty of fun and a bit of social commentary, and established a sound that remains distinctive. They have had plenty of hits, and like many bands of the era were signed by a major label for awhile, before going independent, and even being signed to Trent Reznor’s label. There was lots of touring all around the world but by the mid 1990’s it was all over. Or so it seemed.
My introduction to the band was via their second album “This is the day, this is the hour, this is this!” which was released in 1989 and much to my delight combined electronic beats with metal and rock guitar. The band played Melbourne’s iconic Old Greek Theatre and it was simply the maddest gig I had experienced, and that is saying quite a bit because Melbourne’s hardcore punk and metal scenes had arguably reached a crescendo in previous years, and there was plenty of foldback units covered in blood and people with teeth missing. But PWEI just took it up a level and then a bit more. The packed venue was encouraged to invade the stage and then dive back onto the swarms of people trying to make it onto the stage. It was chaos and the sound was crushing. What made it especially potent was the programmed beats. There was no drummer – which instantly made their stage setup look different – , just a relentless barrage of crystal clear dance and hip hop beats with raw guitar. I think everyone hobbled out of the gig changed in some way.
Almost a decade after they had begin it was all over. PWEI disbanded in the mid 90’s. Main programmer and bassist Richard March went on to form dance music act Bentley Rhythm Ace, with drummer Fuzz Townsend who had joined PWEI in the early 90’s. Vocalist Clint Mansell went on to score a number of film soundtracks including the brilliant ‘Moon’. It seemed PWEI was gone. But then there was a short reformation in 2005, and in 2011 an unexpected thing happened. PWEI reformed, albeit with only one original member, the band’s other vocalist Graham Crabb. Subsequently bassist/programmer Richard March has rejoined along with drummer Fuzz Townsend. Mansell’s place is taken by vocalist Mary Byker from Gaye Bykers on Acid – a perfect choice given that band’s similar pedigree.
Which finally brings me to ask Crabb why he reformed PWEI? “I just felt there was a kind of a gap there.”, he explains. “I missed it and had ideas and didn’t want to just write it off…….” Previous attempts to reform the old line were “met with various degrees of success” but a core problem was always going to be that “Clint was busy with his film work….” So Mary Byker seemed the perfect choice, especially since he had also done work with Apollo 440. A problem for any PWEI reformation was getting all the old sounds, backings and samples together. Technology has moved on and some rumours suggested that all the old discs had been lost. “We’d lost a lot of stuff”, Crabb explains. “We had to contact record companies and find old reel to reels, and old DAT’s……we did have a couple of hard discs go down, but 90% of stuff was backed up somewhere…We just didn’t think about that back in the day….”
Replacing Mansell in the lineup was never going to be easy but in the end there was really just one choice. “I knew Mary from back in the day and we always got on great”, says Crabb. “He’s done stuff with Apollo 440 so he was the only choice really. Richard March is back as well, and Fuzz too….Gradually we are getting more of the lineup back….”
One topic I have been asking musicians about lately is the impact of technological changes upon their careers, especially downloading which has for many made it very tricky. “I think initially as a musician who had always made income from people buying music , I didn’t welcome it but it is an unstoppable force…….” says Crabb, “but we all do this because we love it…..” What makes touring especially gratifying is the large age range in their fan base these days. “We do get younger people which is nice”, says Crabb, “but some of the fans also have kids. And we had younger fans at the time who never got to see us, and now they can as well”. Listening to PWEI “product” (as they love to refer to it) released since the reformation it is as though they literally haven’t missed a beat. They still have that distinctive sound, and perhaps because they were always so far ahead it sounds incredibly contemporary. Now more than ever we need bands with a rebellious streak. We need PWEI.

I had the privilege of seeing Pop Will Eat Itself a couple years ago, and they were exactly what you would guess from the name: an alternative rock band that dismisses the folly of generically manufactured pop music, and is good enough to back up all the trashtalk it dishes out.
This group actually draws inspiration from a lot of hip-hop groups, such as Public Enemy, Run DMC, and The Beastie Boys, which is great for me since my favorite genre is hip-hop.
Just as the name suggests, there’s a huge counterculture undercurrent in their music and it’s all done quite subtly and organically, with nothing ever forced. The only thing they force is their will on everybody in their audience, with their oppressive energy a constant smothering presence that proves infectious as the entire crows was bouncing with every beat.
These guys may be rockers, but they’ve also picked up a few things about being emcees as they’re experts at getting the crowd involved and hyped up. 2014 is a busy year for Pop Will Eat Itself with both an EP and a full album coming out, so everybody should take a trip out to catch a show on the accompanying tour if it comes to their city.

I've been to a few gigs over the years and recently there's been a lethargy from the crowd to let go and dance and enjoy the atmosphere, tonight was a very welcome exception, the PWEI guys from the very first song had so much energy and enthusiasm even since its 25 years since I saw them live last! The night got better every tune, Graham and the guys were genuinely friendly and just so energetic for an older band! Very impressed and very pleased to see they could still cut it, highlights were 'Get the girl and kill the baddies' 'W
Can you dig it?' and 'Bulletproof' awesome!
The gig was fantastic. 18 songs of pure energy from start to finish. The Slade Rooms were a great venue for this intimate gig, keeping the energy in the mini mosh pit throughout. The tribute to Pete Shelley with the track “Homosapien” ended the evening perfectly and poignantly. The set list also saw a cover of the Prodigy’s “Their Law”. I can’t wait to see PWEI and Ned’s Atomic Dustbin in April for “Love From Stourbridge”.
Simply brilliant. I haven't seen them in 20 years, much smaller venue than Reading Festival but great balance of old stuff and some new. Energy, sound were great, interaction with the crowd was great considering there was only about 250 of us

Interview: Graham Crabbe from Pop Will Eat Itself
UK Industrial dance/rock pioneers, Pop Will Eat Itself , aka PWEI, are set to return to Australia next month for the first time in two decades. During the late 80s and early 90s, PWEI gained a huge global following with their sample-heavy satire and industrial dance anthems. On this tour, PWEI fans can look forward to old favourites, including Everything’s Cool, Wise Up Sucker, Def Con One, Ich Bin Ein Auslander, Can U Dig It?, Dance Of The Mad Bastards, PWEIzation, R.S.V.P and many more.
Thanks to Metropolis Touring and Maric Media, we had a chance to talk to founding member and frontman, Graham Crabbe , about the history of the band, his side-project, Golden Claw Musics, and how it feels to be returning to our familiar shores.
SR. Thanks for taking time to talk to us, Graham. First off, congrats on the new tour! Are you looking forward to returning to Australia?
GC. Absolutely stoked. It’s been a long time. The UK, Australia/NZ & the US were our main ports of call. I’d like to keep it that way.
GC. We just try to keep it organic. There’s no master plan. The new incarnation of the band are great musicians and like to play it heavier, so that’s the current vibe of the band. But as we’ll be playing a lot of the old stuff for our first time back, it will be a blend of the heavy, the dancey, the groovy…
SR. When PWEI went on an extended hiatus back in ’96, you focused on your solo project, Golden Claw Musics. What was that time like, and what motivated you to reform in 2005?
GC. The Golden Claw stuff was after my mum died, it was something to throw myself into and make sense of life. It was great working at peter Gabriel’s Real World studios, built into a lake, it was quite fitting for the music.
The Reformation of 2005 was brilliant and was meant to be the Rebirth with an album from the original members but Clint couldn’t commit with all his soundtrack work, so that was that. Since then it was always my goal to get PWEI up & running again. And here we are!
SR. Can you tell us a bit about the background of Reclaim the Game and your feelings towards FIFA and the Brazilian situation? Have you heard how FIFA responded to the release?
GC. Did they respond? I’m unaware of any response. FIFA are a joke. They ruin the game, they’re a bunch of clowns.
They have too much power and could do so much positive with it, really help kids and sort the game out instead of the poncey showbiz circus it’s become.
SR. Over the years, you guys have notched up some pretty intensive tour schedules. What are your favourite aspects of taking the show on the road, and is there a show that stands out as a favourite, or most memorable, from your gig history?
GC. I loved headlining Brixton Academy back in the UK. It’s a big venue and a landmark gig. Touring with Public Enemy and Run DMC was special. And a stadium tour in the States with NIN. Australia/NZ have always treated us very kindly.
[embedvideo id=”36nWNAvtwrw” website=”youtube”]
SR. What’s on your stereo, or iPod, at the moment?
GC. Sleaford Mods, Silver Arm, Noizia, M.I.A.
SR. Do you have any funny or weird tour stories involving a fan that you could share with us?
GC. Mark Little turned up at one of our gigs in Melbourne. Went for drinks afterwards. Nice chap…But strange, repeatable? Pass.
SR. Finally, do you have a message we can pass on to your Australian fans ahead of your Oz tour?
GC. A spiced rum on the rocks, splash of water and freshly squeezed lime juice for me please!…We’re all bang up for this, can’t wait!!

Star Scene: Graham Crabb ~ POP WILL EAT ITSELF (PWEI / Poppies)
Graham Crabb ’s scene is family and football. The co-founder of indie industrial band, Pop Will Eat Itself (also known as PWEI or The Poppies ), states: “I’m kind of a family man these days, so I love doing that. I’ve got the kids supporting Tottenham Hotspur. I’m a big fan and we’re doing better than we have at any point in my lifetime, so that’s quite interesting. Yeah, that’s kind of it, I think.”
A far cry from one of his first band, Wild and Wondering , who were touted as Blind and Blundering – for obvious reasons. PWEI formed from the mainstay of the aforementioned band and From Eden in 1986. Crabb expands on the formation of the band and on his influences: “Towards the end of the ’70s was when I was old enough to start going to gigs or buying records, so that would be the sort of tail end of punk. I used to like a lot of UK punk bands, just stuff like the Ramones, and then I guess it went to post-punk, so it was kind of The Cure and Banshees and Joy Division, stuff like that. That led me on to more electronic stuff, and throughout the ’80s I got more into electro and hip hop, and probably even acid house in the late ’80s. So, it all kind of entered a melting pot and that was really the main sources of my inspiration.” He continues: “Actually, [PWEI] was another band to begin with called From Eden, which Clint and Adam were in. They were advertising for a drummer because Miles Hunt, now with The Wonder Stuff, had just left that band, so I stepped in as drummer. That band went through a split and so it was me, Adam and Clint left. We recruited Richard, became Pop Will Eat Itself, and that was the beginnings. We started up a little Portastudio so you could record four tracks with audio, which sounds very quaint and old-fashioned now, but at the time it was novel and it was great ’cause it was affordable. So, we used to do that before we could afford to go into a studio. Once we got into a studio we loved all the trickery that you could do, and that’s kind of when all the sampling and electronics took over.”
Crabb continues: “It was pretty mad really, because we’d all got boxes of records and I think we even had samples on cassettes in those days. We’d have a tune going in the control room and would be all trying to find samples that we could fit in. I mean, it was a great creative buzz. It was just constant and we sort of went round the clock, grabbing bits of sleep whenever we could, occasionally. The studio process was done in six weeks, but it was a very intense six weeks. As I say, it was just all hands to the pump and we were really pleased with the result. It was the first album we did with Flood (Mark Ellis), who’s obviously gone on to bigger things with U2 and Depeche Mode. But he was an inspiration to us, he showed us how to do a lot of things, particularly mic-ing up, putting an amplifier in the studio and sending out samples and drum loops through the amplifier to get a totally different sound, which was all new to us and it was lots of new experiments, which we loved.”
Unassumingly Crabb states that the well-crafted polished result of the album, This Is the Day…This Is the Hour…This Is This! was due to Flood. “Flood produced a superglue. He kind of pinned it all together. I suppose, in lesser hands, it could’ve sounded a bit of a patchwork quilt, but, as you say, I think the end product is good because we had a good producer on board, too.”
For Crabb, the difference nowadays in the recording process is that “it’s a lot more remote”. He explains: “We’ve all got equipment at home so somebody can start a song, they can send the files, you download them, you put them up on your computer, you come up with what you’re doing, send your files off. It’s just files bouncing backwards and forwards all the time, so we don’t really get in the studio together that much. And we kind of really didn’t in the old days. The guitar would be done separately and then the bass would be done separately, but it was all expensive studio time, whereas nowadays, with the software and everything being computerized, you can take your time and do it at home at no extra cost, so the process is, I think, better in many ways now.”
Translating recordings into live performances, again Crabb is modest. He states: “Live, we just try to be entertaining, I think. Obviously we want it to sound good, but we’re not trying to present the fact that we’re musos or incredibly competent and proficient musicians, ’cause we’re not. People see through that quite easily. Yeah, it’s about entertainment, so if we run about the stage and bump into each other and somebody fluffs a note, well, it’s all sort of part of the fun.”
See Crabb and PWEI perform their recording live on their whirlwind Aussie tour, starting tonight in Sydney, featuring original members Graham Crabb and Richard March alongside Apollo 440 and Pitchshifter vocalist Mary Byker and bassist Davey Bennett.

Blending a vast spectrum of sonic influences, writing music is a means of catharsis for Set It Off. And their most recent singles prove that the genre-bending band is here to stay. From the unapologetically theatrical “Evil People” to the nu-metal charged “Punching Bag,” their latest catalog additions are nothing short of vibrant. Independence has reinvigorated Cody Carson (singer/lyricist), Zach DeWall (guitarist), and Maxx Danziger (drummer) to create a world that’s entirely new yet reminiscent of the sparks they felt during the release cycle of their debut record, Cinematics (2012). Emphasizing breaking the dopamine loop and finding true fulfillment means making music and visuals from the heart. And over a decade later, the trio’s sincerity continues to resonate with fans.

PWEI disbanded in the mid 90's. Main programmer and bassist Richard March went on to form dance music act Bentley Rhythm Ace, with drummer Fuzz Townsend who had joined PWEI in the early 90's. Vocalist Clint Mansell went on to score a number of film soundtracks including the brilliant 'Moon'. It seemed PWEI was gone.
