38 countries you can travel VISA-FREE with Canada visa [2024 Edition]

Updated: March 23, 2024 230 Comments

Travel Countries VISA-FREE with Canada Visa

I always encourage my readers to get their US visas at some point. Having a US visa will open up many doors. Of course, you can travel to the US, but you can also travel to 53 countries VISA-FREE with US visa .

But, many fear that the US visa is the most difficult to get.

Well, there is an alternative – CANADA VISA.

Canada visa is the second-best visa. You can travel 38 countries VISA-FREE with Canada visa.

The best thing about a Canada visa is that there is NO VISA INTERVIEW.

The US visa interview process is frightening to many. If you have been to one, you would know what I mean. The high security at the consulate, lining up in the street outside the building, intimidating visa officers, questions that you were not prepared for, and the list goes on.

If you do not have a US consulate in your city, you have to travel to the nearest city where the US consulate is. The visa fee itself is quite steep and on top of that, these travel expenses can add up.

IMPORTANT DISCLAIMER Visa requirements change constantly but we make every effort to keep the information accurate and up to date. We provide links to official sources wherever necessary, so you can conduct your own due diligence to verify the visa requirements before planning your trip. Why should you get a Canada tourist visa?

Though a Canada visa doesn’t offer as much VISA-FREE travel as a US visa, a Canada visa has its advantages.

  • Canada visa application has no visa interview.
  • Canada tourist visa is also a long-term visa. Usually issued for 10 years or until the expiration of your passport.
  • The fee for Canada tourist visa is much lesser. It’s only 100 CAD.
  • India and China passport holders can even take advantage of the CAN+ expedited program.
  • Last but not least, Canada itself is a beautiful country. Have you ever seen the pictures of Banff National Park? Just Google it. It’s spectacular. That’s just one example. The country is vast, diverse and a nature lover’s paradise. It’s also culturally diverse and the people are the most polite in the world.

I got denied to board to fly to Egypt even-though I have Canadian visa. I think the problems here are the immigration change the regulations many times, and Egypt it self still not giving any explanation.

Thirumal Motati says

March 23, 2024 at 5:17 am

Hi YVR! I’m sorry that happened to you. The diplomatic relations between Egypt and Canada were severed last year. Because of that, Egypt imposed visas on Canadian citizens since October last year. But they still allowed Canadian visas for non-Canadians to obtain VOA. But looks like they have removed Canada visas completed from their VOA list. I will check with the authorities and update the list accordingly. Again, I’m sorry for what happened to you and I appreciate for updating us. Thanks!

What Countries Can A Canadian PR Card Take You To? 26 Visa on Arrival Countries!

One of the most awesome things about becoming a Canadian Permanent Resident is having the opportunity and flexibility to visit many countries without the hassle of going through visa applications.

I have had a bunch of countries in North America on my travel bucket list for years.

Unfortunately, I was discouraged from visiting when I saw the long visa application requirements and duration.

It just looked like too much work. Depending on the country, it could also be a very expensive process.

Thankfully, when you become a Canadian permanent resident, the ease of discovering new places opens up so much more.

All you have to do is book a plane ticket, an awesome hotel , grab your passport and PR card and you’re good to go. Becoming a Canadian permanent resident certainly makes spontaneous traveling a lot more fun.

Travel to the UK as a Canadian Permanent Resident

You may be able to transit through the UK if you have a valid PR card issued after 2002. For clarification on this regarding the UK, see HERE .

Travel to the US as a Canadian Permanent Resident

If you’re disappointed the US isn’t on the list, not to worry.

Getting a US visa as a Canadian Permanent Resident is not that difficult but you will have to submit an application and pay for it. You will also be required to attend an interview.

In most cases, you will be granted a 10-year visa as a Canadian permanent resident.

Applying for a US Visa as a Canadian Permanent Resident

Applying for my US visa as a Canadian Permanent Resident was quite a challenge. Completing the DS-160 non-immigrant application form was straightforward.

However, after completing the application, I received an email to go to a different website to make a payment for the visa application and schedule an interview.

After the payment, the next available appointment date in Toronto was 2024 which was out of the question as I had to also travel for work so every few nights between 12 pm – 2 am, I would refresh the appointment page to check for cancellations. Sometimes, I did it early in the morning.

This went on for months before I finally managed to reschedule my interview date to Jan 2023. On the interview day, there was a long line in the embassy but they tried to get through everyone ASAP.

They asked me where I worked and why I wanted to visit the US then let me know my visa was approved and my passport would be sent across via courier (extra charges). I was at the interview window for less than 10 minutes. lol.

My passport came back about 10 days later with a 10-year visit visa and that was it! I was super glad when it was over and I’ll be a Canadian by the 10-year expiration date of the visa.

It seems standard that if you’re a Canadian Permanent Resident without any security flags, you’ll be issued a 10-year visa.

If you want to visit the US, apply ASAP because those interview dates are unreal!

You can find out more about applying for a US visa as a Canadian Permanent Resident HERE .

Travel Tips for Canadian Permanent Residents

There are some important things to note if you are traveling to countries that grant visas on arrival to Canadian permanent residents:-

  • Your passport needs to be valid for at least 6 months valid prior to travel. They will likely not let you board the plane anyway if you overlook this but this is airline dependent.
  • Just because it’s visa-free doesn’t mean you won’t be charged minor administration fees on arrival. This varies greatly from country to country so check with the specific embassy prior to traveling.
  • In all cases, you should call the country’s embassy anyway to reconfirm the travel requirements before traveling in case you need to bring additional documentation along. You can find a list of country embassies in Canada HERE .
  • Before you head out, be sure to check the Government of Canada’s Travel Advice and Advisories website for safety and security updates for over 100 countries.

This is wholesome!! Thank you for this. As someone with a Nigerian passport, I have struggled to find places to visit with my PR. Now the possibilities are literally endless.

Happy travels :)

As a Nigerian citizen and also a permanent resident of Canada do I need a visa to visit uk

Yes, you do. You may be able to transit through the UK without a visa. Learn more here https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/740080/UK_Visa_requirements_Sept_2018.pdf .

Thank you for this Abi!🙂 I hold a travel document for palestinian refugees issued in Lebanon but I am also a Canadian PR holder and I live in Toronto. Does it matter what kind of passport or travel document you hold? Or does it only depend on whether you have a Canadian PR or not?

It should be OK but not too sure about this. Best to call the country’s embassy and ask just to be sure.

Thanks so much for this. I am Nigerian;I have Canadian PR card. Can I go to Georgia for real becos i see Georgia on the list.

If Georgia is on the list, then you can go but always check for updated travel info especially with the pandemic. Happy Travels!

Thank you for this, just came across your blog. I am a Nigerian citizen with a Canadian PR card. Can I go to Jamaica & Mexico as I see both on the list without going through visa applications?

Yes, you can go to Jamaica & Mexico for up to 6 months (VOA) but always a good idea to check the country’s local consulate for any updates or other documents you should have with you on arrival. Happy travels!

Yes, you can go to Jamaica visa free on your Nigerian passport and Canadian PR card. I just came back from Jamaica with my PR card and Nig passport. As long as your Nig passport is still valid though.

Hi there, I’m a Pakistani citizen with Canadian PR. How can I travel to Europe? Specifically Spain? I can’t seem to find proper information anywhere

You will likely need a Schengen visa to visit Spain. Your best bet is to check with the Spanish consulate for exact requirements – https://www.exteriores.gob.es/Consulados/toronto/en/Consulado/Paginas/Horario,-localizaci%c3%b3n-y-contacto.aspx .

Do you have more information on when you applied and how long it took for a new spot to open up?

Before you travel make sure you have the following –

  • Valid Passport with more than 6 months validity
  • Valid Canadian PR card
  • Proof to fund your travel
  • Round-trip ticket

You must be able to satisfy the immigration officers that you plan to return to your country of residence within the period or they might deny your entry.

It’s important to note that Airport Employees usually won’t be familiar with immigration laws, so do not take their advice but instead follow the guidance only by an immigration officer regarding the rules of their country.

When I visited the UK, I had an instance where the airport employee was giving me wrong information about using PR card for transit but I had no issue with the UK Border Agency for using my PR Card to be eligible for a single day transit .

Have you run into any issues while using your PR card for travel? Feel free to share your experience.

Which Countries Can Canadian PR Travel Without Visa?

Becoming a Canadian Permanent Resident will open up a world of opportunities in terms of travel. Successfully attaining PR status in Canada means that you no longer have to complete laborious visa application processes to visit certain countries. Fortunately, many of these places are 5-star travel destinations and popular tourist locations, so you’re practically guaranteed a quality trip.

We’ve picked out our favourite visa-free nations to explore and included them in this guide, so now all you’d need to is figure out the logistics. Determine a place to stay when you get there, pick up your PR card and passport, and enjoy your adventure.

TOP 10 COUNTRIES TO TRAVEL TO AS A CANADIAN PR WITH NO VISA

Travelling to Mexico as a Canadian PR is extremely simple and convenient. Arrival into the country is available to all nationalities assuming you have a valid PR card for the entire duration of your stay, along with an up to date passport. The only real restriction that Mexico imposes is a 6 month (180 day) stay limit.

#2 Costa Rica

Similar to Mexico, this country features very reasonable requirements for Canadian PR status holders. All nationalities are eligible for entry with a PR card and passport. The conditions for visiting Costa Rica are as follows: you can only stay for a maximum of 30 days at a time, and your PR card must be valid for over 6 months.

Panama opens its borders to Canadian PRs of any nationality for up to 3 months (90 days) at a time. Their conditions are slightly more cumbersome than the first two listings, but nothing out of the ordinary. To travel to Panama, your passport must not expire for at least 90 days upon the date of arrival, and any applicable visas (if you have one) must be valid for 180 days. You are also required to provide proof of financial solvency for at least $500 in US dollars.

Much like the countries above, Antigua offers the same all-nationality inclusive policies for Canadian permanent resident cards. The country allows Canadian PR to stay for a full month (30 days) without the need for a Canadian visa. However, it is mandatory to obtain a VOA (Visa on Arrival) once your flight reaches the airport. A VOA in Antigua will cost you $100 in US dollars and is not compatible for multi-entry.

If you happen to own an Indian passport you can travel to the Bahamas for 30 days as a visa-exempt Canadian PR. However, your Canadian permanent residency card must be valid for a minimum of 90 days if leaving from Canada, and 180 days if leaving from a different country.

A highly popular destination for Canadian vacationers, Canadian PR status holders may enter the country for up to 30 days with just a valid PR card. However, you must register for a Cuban Tourist Card which you can acquire from most airline companies prior to boarding, Cuban travel agencies, or Cuban embassies. There is also a minor fee that tourists pay in Cuba.

#7 Dominican Republic

Similar to Cuba, the Dominican Republic allows Canadian permanent residents to stay for 30 days without a visa upon entry. There is however a mandatory $10 US dollar fee per traveler for a Dominican Republic Tourist Card, which is generally included in the cost of airfare. Like most other countries on this list, your passport must not expire for at least 180 days after arrival.

#8 Turks and Caicos

Being a British-claimed territory, this spot is very accessible to Canadians. The islands of Turks and Caicos allow Canadian PRs of all nationalities to visit visa-free for 90 days.

Peru offers a very long stay (up to 6 months) for Canadian PRs without a visa, as long as they own either a Chinese or Indian passport, plus a valid Canadian permanent residency card.

Visiting Qatar is accessible to individuals of any nationality as long as they have a valid Canadian permanent resident card, although it’s not exactly “visa-exempt” in the traditional sense. You’re able to legally stay in Qatar without a Canadian visa for 30 days, but you must apply for a free VOA in Qatar upon arrival. It costs nothing to acquire, but it’s only usable for single-entry.

Three Important Things to Consider Before You Leave

Even though these countries are extending their generosity by providing visa-free travel for Canadian PR status holders, you need to ensure that you’ve covered a few essential pre-travel basics first:

1. As a permanent resident, you need to check to make sure your passport does not expire for a minimum of 180 days before you set out. The last thing you need is being turned away at the airport all because you didn’t renew your passport.

2. Free of visa does not mean free of charge. Some of the countries on this list will include small administration fees once you arrive. There are many different policies surrounding these fees, and because they vary from country to country (likelihood of being waived, fluctuations in cost, etc) it’s best to check with your destination’s embassy beforehand.

3. Last but not least, always confirm your travel requirements if you have any doubts before the flight. This way you can enjoy your stay worry-free!

WHAT IF I AM TRAVELLING AS A US CITIZEN?

Travelling visa-free good enough for the average explorer, but if you’ve seriously caught the travel bug you should consider applying for a Canadian travel visa. At the end of the day, getting a Canadian travel visa comes with numerous benefits and is relatively easy to acquire. Canada is a beautiful country that is definitely worth travelling to if you haven’t yet gone north of the border. If you’re interested in travelling to the Canada, visit Courtenay, one of the best cities to travel and Courtenay also offers best currency exchange rates for tourists and travelers.

Why should I get a Canadian tourist visa?

Quite simply, it’s very easy to get one if you are an American citizen. Unlike the application process for a US visa, Canadian tourist visas do not require an interview to receive. They typically last up to 10 years if your passport does not expire first, and the fee is comparatively minor at only $100 Canadian. In terms of what other visa’ are eligible in Canada, you could put in an application for a V-1 (visitor visa), W-1 (work visa), S-1 (student visa), or a VH-1 (transit visa).

Do permanent residents in Canada need a visa to enter the US?

Yes. If your Canadian documentation only extends as far as permanent residency status and not citizenship, you’ll need to acquire a non-immigrant visa from US officials before you can cross the border. As a side note, it’s usually a good idea to apply for this form well in advance before your departure date to ensure that the results arrive when you need it.

Final Thoughts: Proof of Canadian Permanent  Residency

Don’t forget that you will need to show proof of Canadian PR status twice – once before you travel south into the states, and again to Canadian officials when returning home. Canadian citizens however are allowed to periodically visit the US visa-free as long as they can provide a valid passport along with any supplementary documents.

Before any departure it’s a good idea to stay informed on general travelling terms and conditions. Check out our article on how long you can stay outside of Canada without losing benefits

Nestled amid the foothills of the Canadian Rockies, this tiny mountain town in Alberta appeals to both nature enthusiasts and luxury seekers. Visitors can spend their days skiing or hiking in Banff National Park (one of Canada's most beautiful national parks and home of the glacier-fed Moraine Lake) and floating down the Bow River on a canoe before retiring to one of the area's several opulent hotels for some spa therapy. Then, for incredible views of the Rockies, take a ride on the Banff Gondola. Meanwhile, daytrips to popular attractions like the Columbia Icefield, Yoho National Park and Lake Louise cannot be left off of your itinerary.

As the largest national park in the Canadian Rockies, Jasper is ripe for exploration. When you're not hiking through Maligne Canyon, whitewater rafting down the Athabasca River or snapping photos of Spirit Island, you can enjoy a bird's-eye view of the picture-perfect scenery from the Jasper SkyTram. Or, take in the beauty of Jasper National Park while driving along the Icefields Parkway. Keep your eyes peeled for the 53 species of mammals that call this Alberta park home, including black bears, elk and bighorn sheep. Note: Due to active wildfires that began in July 2024, Jasper National Park is closed indefinitely.

A trip to this British Columbia city, which sits approximately 145 miles north of Seattle, is all about embracing the outdoors. Vancouverites spend their days skiing on Grouse Mountain, swimming at Kitsilano Beach and strolling through the sprawling Stanley Park. Plus, Vancouver offers plenty of cultural attractions, including museums, art galleries and outdoor markets (a tour of Granville Island is a must-do). If you're not afraid of heights, walk across the Capilano Suspension Bridge, which is positioned 230 feet above the Capilano River.

Travel to this iconic destination in southeastern Ontario to see and capture photos of its namesake world-famous tourist attraction . View Niagara Falls from above during a helicopter tour, or see them up close on the Maid of the Mist boat tour. Or, for a unique perspective, admire the thunderous falls from behind with the self-guided Journey Behind the Falls experience. After you've taken in the splendor, check out the area's other top attractions, such as the Niagara Glen Nature Centre, which offers a variety of hiking trails. When you've had your fill of nature, head to nearby wineries or test Lady Luck at the casinos.

Referred to as the "small city with a big backyard," Whitehorse – the capital of Canada's Yukon territory – shines with all of its outdoor activities. Explore Miles Canyon, which is accessible from Whitehorse on foot (a nearly 10-mile loop trail connects the city directly to this natural wonder). After, head north to the Yukon Wildlife Preserve, where you'll find all kinds of animals, including arctic foxes, elk, muskox and bison. Even though this region gets notoriously cold, you might want to time your visit around the first couple of weeks of winter for a chance to witness the northern lights.

A trip to Europe may not be in your budget, but a visit to Québec City could be. This Canadian city charms visitors with its picturesque centuries-old buildings that make up Old Québec – a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Meanwhile, the aromas of freshly baked bread and brewing espresso fill the cobblestone streets of the Quartier Petit-Champlain with the essence of Paris. Once you've gotten your fill of the city, take a trip to Montmorency Falls Park to marvel at its 272-foot-tall waterfall. Home to rolling green hills, sandy beaches, red sandstone cliffs and a delicious bounty of seafood (this is where PEI mussels come from, after all), Prince Edward Island is the place to travel for a relaxing respite from Canada's more adventure-driven destinations. When you're not hiking the trails at Prince Edward Island National Park, perfect your swing at one of the island's golf courses or visit the Green Gables Heritage Place, where the 1908 novel, "Anne of Green Gables" was inspired. And be sure to keep an eye out for PEI's seal population (four kinds call the island home either full or part time).

This UNESCO World Heritage Site encompasses nearly 700 square miles of land on Newfoundland's west coast. Its top activity is undoubtedly hiking through the Tablelands. Here, you'll traverse exposed earth mantle, a rust-colored landscape that was created millions of years ago by a collision of tectonic plates. Also save time for a boat ride on Western Brook Pond, which is a glacier-carved, landlocked fjord that features cascading waterfalls measuring 2,000 feet. After getting a taste of nature, learn about the region's history at the Lobster Cove Head Lighthouse.

Meanwhile, if you're visiting during the warmer months, don't miss out on the Montréal Botanical Garden and the scenic Mount Royal Park.

Many pay a visit to Victoria, British Columbia's capital city, for afternoon tea, a tour of the beautiful Parliament Buildings or a history lesson at the Royal BC Museum. Others are interested in visiting Vancouver Island's wineries to sample local vinos. Meanwhile, animal lovers enjoy the abundance of marine wildlife that call the waters surrounding Victoria home. In fact, there are nearly 80 orca whales in Victoria's waters. What's more, since Victoria is one of the most sustainable urban destinations in North America, visitors can feel good about the impact of their trip.

Visitors to Canada are equally as wowed by the wildlife and wilderness as they are by the cultural and culinary offerings in the cities that speckle this sprawling nation.

Look for polar bears on the arctic tundra of Churchill or cruise Vancouver’s curvy coastline in a canoe while gawking at the city skyline. Feast on five-star fusion cuisine in Toronto, or take in a street-side jam session in Montréal.

Whether you’re a first-time visitor or returning to experience something new, these are the best places to go in Canada. But you'll have to plan your trip ahead because this is the world’s second-largest country – you can’t see it all in just one go.

Best for diversity

A vibrant jumble of cultures and neighborhoods , Toronto strikes you with sheer urban awe. Will you have dinner in Chinatown or Greektown? Five-star fusion or a peameal bacon sandwich? In Ontario ’s coolest city, designer shoes from Bloor-Yorkville are accessorized with tattoos in Queen West, while modern art galleries, theater par excellence, rocking band rooms, and hockey mania round out the megalopolis.

This is far and away Canada’s most diverse city, as well as its largest – about half of Toronto’s residents were born in another country.

Local tip : Snap a photo of the CN Tower  (one of the top spots to visit in Toronto ). For an added thrill: check out Edgewalk, where you can shuffle around the tower’s perimeter while taking in unparalleled city views.

The sawtooth, snow-topped mountains straddling the British Columbia — Alberta border inspire both awe and action. Five national parks – Banff, Yoho, Kootenay, Waterton Lakes and Jasper – offer countless opportunities to delve into the lush wilderness with ribbons of hiking trails , rushing whitewater and powdery ski slopes to satisfy travelers looking for mountain thrills.

This is one of the best places to visit in Canada in winter , but there is outdoor adventure aplenty during the summer months, too.

Planning tip: For a different perspective, take the train and experience the grandeur from the comfort of your seat: luminous lakes, jumbles of wildflowers and glistening glaciers glide by as the steel cars chug up mountain passes and down river valleys en route to points east or west.

3. Manitoulin Island

Best for Canada’s First Nations culture

The largest freshwater island in the world, floating right in Lake Huron’s midst, Manitoulin is a slowpoke place of beaches and summery cottages. Jagged expanses of white quartzite and granite outcroppings edge the shoreline and lead to shimmering vistas. First Nations culture pervades, and the island’s eight communities collaborate to offer local foods (wild rice, corn soup) and eco-adventures (canoeing, horseback riding, hiking). Powwows add drumming, dancing and storytelling to the mix for immersive experiences that connect you with the people and the land of the country that we now know as Canada.

A crossing at Downtown Vancouver where cars wait at the traffic lights and people cross the road during the day with snow-capped mountains across the strait in the background.

4. Vancouver

Best for urban life with access to nature

Sea-to-sky beauty surrounds the laid-back, cocktail-loving metropolis of Vancouver . There are skiable mountains on the outskirts, beaches fringing the coast and Stanley Park ’s thick rainforest just steps from downtown’s gleaming skyscrapers.

For the best of both worlds, pick up provisions and a cold beer and picnic at one of the amazing city parks (it’s legal to drink alcohol at most of them during the summer).

Shop and stroll through the diverse and charming neighborhoods – you may even spot a celebrity along the way. Known as “Hollywood North,” Vancouver is the filming location for many TV and film productions shot throughout the year.

Planning tip: With its mild climate and beautiful beaches , Vancouver is definitely one of the best places in Canada to visit in summer.

5. Baffin Island

Best for Inuit art and incredible landscapes

The rugged landscape of Baffin Island is home to cloud-scraping mountains and a third of Nunavut’s human population. It’s Canada’s largest island (the fifth biggest in the world) and the ideal place for an arctic safari where you can spot narwhals, belugas and bears in their natural habitat. The island’s crown jewel is Auyuittuq National Park – its name means “the land that never melts,” and indeed glaciers, fjords and vertiginous cliffs fill the eastern expanse. The park is a siren call for hardcore hikers and climbers – and more than a few polar bears.

Local tip: Baffin Island is also a center for Inuit art; studios for high-quality carving, printmaking and weaving can be found in many of the small towns.

6. Vancouver Island

Best for nature, surf beaches and boutique food ventures

Picture-postcard Victoria is the heart of Vancouver Island , beating with bohemian shops, wood-floored coffee bars and a past steeped in English tea culture since the 1840s.  British Columbia ’s capital city is full of charm, but it’s only the kick-off point to an island that has a bounty of natural wonders to explore.

Brooding Pacific Rim National Park Reserve includes the West Coast Trail, where the wind-bashed ocean meets a mist-shrouded wilderness, and surfers line up for Tofino’s waves. With so many outdoor adventures to try, this is one of the best places in Canada for nature lovers.

Detour: Wandering foodies will want to head to the Cowichan Valley, which is studded with welcoming small farms and boutique wineries.

7. Whistler

Best for skiing, mountain biking or summer paddle-boarding

This 2010 Winter Olympics venue is one of the world’s largest, best-equipped and most popular ski resorts, and it’s only a 90-minute drive from downtown Vancouver. Featuring over 200 marked runs winding down two towering mountains – Whistler and Blackcomb – this alpine village is paradise for skiers of all levels.

Skiing may be Whistler ’s raison d’être, but summer visitors with their downhill mountain bikes and stand-up paddle-boards outnumber their ski-season equivalents, making the resort a year-round hot spot for locals and visitors alike. Adding more diversity, Whistler has recently developed a thriving arts and culture scene, with highlights like the Audain Art Museum and Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre taking the stage as equally appealing attractions to the famed slopes.

8. Old Québec City

Best place to visit in Canada for romantics

Québec’s capital is more than 400 years old, and its stone walls, spired cathedrals and jazz-filled cafes suffuse it with atmosphere, romance, melancholy, eccentricity and intrigue on par with any European city. The best way to soak it all up is to walk the old town’s labyrinth of lanes and get lost amid the street performers and cozy inns, stopping every so often for a café au lait and flaky pastry.

The city is also home to Québec’s scenic highway, Rte 132. Circling the Gaspé Peninsula , this road winds past the sea and the mountains, as well as charming towns. More than 700,000 people drive it each summer. Of course, it has yet to approach the romantic popularity of Canada’s “honeymoon capital,” Niagara Falls, a region that draws more than 14 million annual visitors. But head for La Gaspésie instead, young lovers. Because if you’re on your honeymoon, you don’t need 14 million other people hanging around.

9. Montréal

Best for music lovers

As Canada’s second-largest city and the country’s cultural heart,  Montréal  is a marvel for music lovers. From June to August, Montréalers get high on sunshine in parks, beaches, mountaintop forests and endless festivals. The steamy outdoors is more alive than ever with arts-loving visitors filling the streets (and the cool of performance spaces), while rooftop bars turn into parties. The best jazz-influenced musicians in the world play to equally jazzed spectators at the annual  Montréal International Jazz Festival , where there are over 500 performances and shows to enjoy (and countless are free). Nature is also never far away in Montréal where a network of cycling paths, waterways and islands crisscross the city. No wonder Montréalers grow up jogging, paddling canals and skating in the fresh air.

Planning tip:  Check out  Tourisme Montréal  for the latest live music events, big and small, throughout the city.

Two people on a frozen canal holding hands; one is on ice-skates, the other is in a wheelchair

10. Rideau Canal

Best for ice skating

Opened in 1832, this 200km-long (124 miles) waterway – consisting of canals, rivers and lakes – connects Ottawa and Kingston via 47 locks. The Rideau Canal is at its finest in wintry Ottawa, where a stretch of it becomes the Rideau Canal Skateway – the world's largest skating rink.

People swoosh by on the 7.8km (4.8 miles) of groomed ice, pausing for hot chocolate and scrumptious slabs of fried dough called beavertails (a quintessentially Canadian treat). February’s Winterlude festival kicks it up a notch when townsfolk build massive ice sculptures.

Local tip: Once the canal thaws, it becomes a boater’s paradise, meaning you can appreciate it whatever time of year you visit.

11. The Prairies

Best for big-sky road trips

Solitude reigns in Canada’s middle ground. Driving through the flatlands of Manitoba and Saskatchewan turns up uninterrupted fields of golden wheat that stretch to the horizon, eventually melting into the sunshine. When the wind blows, the wheat sways like waves on the ocean, punctuated by the occasional grain elevator rising up like a tall ship.

Big skies mean big storms that drop like an anvil, visible on the skyline for miles. Far-flung towns include arty Winnipeg , boozy Moose Jaw and Mountie-filled Regina, interspersed with Ukrainian and Scandinavian villages.

Two zipliners head down a wire towards a vast cascading waterfall

12. Niagara Falls

Best for an iconic travel experience

Niagara Falls may be relatively short (it doesn’t even crack the top 500 worldwide for height), but when those great muscular bands of water arc over the precipice like liquid glass, roaring into the void below – and you sail toward it in a mist-shrouded boat – the falls never fail to impress.

While you’re there, extend your stay and head beyond the falls on a two-wheel biking adventure along the Greater Niagara Circle Route, or take a go at the Wildplay Zipline to the Falls , a pulse-pounding rush of a ride that offers unparalleled views of the falls below as you zoom through the sky.

Read on for the best experiences to be had in Canada.

13. Bay of Fundy

Best place to spot whales

It has lighthouses, boats and trawlers, fishing villages and other maritime scenery, yet Fundy is not your average Canadian bay. That’s because its unique geography results in the world’s most extreme tides, capable of reaching 16m (56ft) – about the height of a five-story building.

The tides stir up serious whale food, with krill and other plankton attracting fin, humpback and blue whales to feast, as well as endangered North Atlantic right whales, making a whale watch here an extraordinary must-do.

14. Churchill

Best for polar bear encounters

The first polar bear you see up close will take your breath away, and there’s no better place for an encounter than Churchill , Manitoba, which happens to be right on the bears’ migration path. From late September to early November, tundra vehicles head out in search of the razor-clawed beasts, sometimes getting you close enough to lock eyes with the beautiful bears. Summer lets you kayak or stand-up paddleboard with beluga whales.

15. Drumheller

Best for dinosaur enthusiasts

Dinosaur lovers get weak-kneed in dust-blown Drumheller , where paleontological civic pride runs high thanks to the Royal Tyrrell Museum , home to one of the planet's pre-eminent fossil collections. The world’s largest “dinosaur” is here, too – a giant fiberglass T-rex that visitors can climb and peer out of (through its mouth). Beyond the dino-hoopla, the area offers classic Badlands scenery and eerie, mushroom-like rock columns called hoodoos.

Planning tip: Follow the scenic driving loops; these take you past all the good stuff.

Can a Canadian Permanent Resident Travel to USA? Your Guide.

As a Canadian permanent resident, you may wonder if you can travel to the USA. The good news is that Canadian permanent residents are generally allowed to enter the United States for tourism, business, or other purposes. However, there are specific entry and exit requirements that you need to be aware of before planning your trip. Let’s explore the details.

Key Takeaways:

  • Canadian permanent residents can travel to the USA for tourism, business, or other purposes.
  • There are specific entry and exit requirements that need to be met.
  • Visa requirements depend on the country of citizenship for Canadian permanent residents.
  • The Department of Homeland Security and Customs and Border Protection have authority over entry into the USA.
  • Consult the U.S. Embassy and Consulate websites for up-to-date information on traveling to the USA.

Risk Level and Safety and Security in the USA

When traveling to the United States, it is essential to consider the risk level, safety, and security measures in place. While most of the country is safe for travelers, it’s necessary to be aware of specific areas that may pose higher risks.

Risk Level in the United States

Along the border with Mexico, in states like Arizona, California, New Mexico, and Texas, criminal incidents related to drug trafficking may occur more frequently.

Travelers should exercise increased caution in these areas and use officially recognized border crossings when crossing the U.S.-Mexico border by car. It’s important to stay vigilant and follow local law enforcement guidance.

There may be instances of petty crime, such as pickpocketing, in urban centers and tourist locations. Travelers should be mindful of their belongings and take necessary precautions to protect their valuables.

Entry and Exit Requirements for Canadian Permanent Residents

As a Canadian permanent resident planning to travel to the United States, you must familiarize yourself with the entry and exit requirements. These requirements ensure a smooth and hassle-free travel experience. Here are the key details you need to know:

  • Traveling by Air: When traveling by air, you must present a valid passport for the duration of your stay or a valid NEXUS card at self-serve kiosks. This applies to both entry and exit from the United States.
  • Traveling by Land or Water: If you’re entering the United States by land or water, you may need a valid passport, a Trusted Traveler Program card, an enhanced driver’s license (EDL), or other approved travel documents. It’s essential to check the specific requirements based on your travel purpose and the duration of your stay.

In addition to these requirements, it’s always recommended to carry your Canadian permanent resident card or other proof of your status as a Canadian permanent resident when traveling to the United States.

Entry and Exit Requirements for Canadian Permanent Residents

Remember, having the necessary documentation and meeting the entry and exit requirements is essential for hassle-free travel as a Canadian permanent resident.

Visa Requirements for Canadian Permanent Residents

The visa requirements for Canadian permanent residents vary depending on their country of citizenship.

If you are a citizen of a country eligible for the Visa Waiver Program, you may be able to visit the U.S. for up to 90 days without a visa. However, if you are not eligible for the Visa Waiver Program or your stay in the U.S. exceeds 90 days, you must apply for a nonimmigrant visa.

The Visa Waiver Program lets people from certain countries visit the U.S. for tourism or business without a visa. To qualify, you need a valid e-passport and approval through ESTA.

This program provides convenience for Canadian permanent residents who meet the requirements and plan to visit the U.S. temporarily.

However, you must apply for a nonimmigrant visa if you are not eligible for the Visa Waiver Program or plan to stay in the U.S. for longer than 90 days.

The reason for your trip determines the visa you require, be it for work, study, or joining a family member. Review the criteria and application procedures for the particular nonimmigrant visa category that suits your situation.

Disclaimer: The table info is just a general guide. Visa rules can change, so check the exact requirements for your country and the reason for traveling.

Permanent Residents of Canada and the Visa Waiver Program

As a permanent resident of Canada, you may be eligible for the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) when traveling to the United States. The VWP allows individuals from participating countries to visit the U.S. for business or pleasure for up to 90 days without needing a visa.

To qualify for the VWP, you must be a citizen of a participating country, possess a valid e-Passport, and have obtained ESTA approval. This streamlined process makes it easier for Canadian permanent residents to travel to the United States.

When getting ready for your trip, bring evidence of your Permanent Resident Status in Canada for your return. This could be your permanent resident card or travel document.

Also, have all the essential travel documents, including your passport and any extra paperwork that U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers might ask for.

While the VWP allows for visa-free travel, it’s essential to remember that it has certain limitations. The 90-day period is not extendable, and you must leave the United States before your authorized stay ends.

If you plan to stay in the U.S. for longer than the allowed 90 days or for purposes other than those permitted under the VWP, you must apply for a nonimmigrant visa before your trip.

Participating Countries in the Visa Waiver Program

Visa Requirements for Canadian Permanent Residents from Specific Countries

If you’re a permanent resident of Canada originally from India, you need to request a U.S. Visitor Visa. This visa lets you travel to the United States for different reasons, such as tourism, business, medical treatment, or participating in conferences and workshops. Review the visa requirements based on your citizenship to ensure a hassle-free entry into the United States.

The U.S. Department of State’s official website provides comprehensive information on visa requirements and the application process, making it easier to understand the specific steps you need to take.

Remember to allow ample time for visa processing, as it can take several weeks or months, depending on your situation.

It’s important to note that visa requirements may change over time, so it’s always a good idea to check for any updates or changes before planning your trip.

By understanding and complying with the entry and exit requirements and visa regulations (if applicable) and following the necessary procedures, you can have a smooth and enjoyable trip to the USA.

Provincial Nominee Program (PNP)

The Easiest Province to Get PR in Canada

Depending on your profile, provinces’ nominee programs can be the easiest way to secure  PR  in Canada. So which provinces make it easiest to get PR for candidates with no connections to Canada? Here it is our Top 5.

There are countless nominee programs, each with its own unique eligibility requirements. PNPs let provinces respond to their own unique immigration needs. Generally, PNPs are designed to fill gaps in the labour force, so they will target candidates with experience in high-demand occupations.

We are often asked which Canadian Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) is the easiest to immigrate to for overseas candidates. While many PNPs require a connection to their province – such as a job offer, work experience, or an educational credential – to apply for nomination, there are some programs that invite candidates solely based on their ability to fill labour or demographic gaps.

These are the four provinces that are considered the easiest for overseas applicants to get PR in Canada in 2023:

#1 – Saskatchewan’s International Skilled Worker: Occupation In-Demand and Express Entry

Located in Canada’s prairie region, the province of Saskatchewan has become a popular destination for immigrants due to its  strong economic growth  and job opportunities.

The  Occupations In-Demand  and  Express Entry  streams of Saskatchewan’s  International Skilled Worker  PNP are designed to recruit workers with experience in the province’s in-demand occupations. These International Skilled Worker streams hand-select candidates using an Expression of Interest (EOI) system.

To submit an EOI, applicants must have at least one year of experience in an occupation not on SINP’s  Excluded Occupations List . Interested candidates must have also completed a post-secondary educational credential of at least one year and speak English or French. Any candidate that meets Saskatchewan’s minimum eligibility criteria, including scoring a minimum of 60 points on their  Points Assessment Grid , may submit an EOI profile. Submitted profiles are then considered in one of  SINP’s EOI draws . Only candidates with the most competitive SINP score and in-demand occupations are invited in SINP EOI draws.

Candidates eligible for Express Entry can apply under the  Saskatchewan Express Entry  stream for expedited processing of their permanent residence application. However, the  Saskatchewan Occupations In-Demand stream  is also available to those that don’t qualify to submit an Express Entry profile.

#2 – Alberta’s Express Entry Stream

Canada’s western province of Alberta is home to some of Canada’s thriving cities, such as Calgary and Edmonton. With a growing job market and great education system, Alberta is a noteworthy province for prospective newcomers.

The  Alberta Express Entry  stream selects candidates from the federal Express Entry pool to apply for provincial nomination. One major benefit of this stream is that they consider Express Entry candidates with CRS scores as low as 300, which means more candidates in the pool will have a chance at receiving a Notification of Interest from the province.

It is worth noting that a CRS score above 300 does not guarantee an invitation from Alberta’s Express Entry stream. The  Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program  releases the CRS score of the lowest-ranking candidate from each round of invitations but does not release the additional targeted criteria. The following factors may increase a candidate’s chances:

  • A qualifying relative that is a permanent resident or citizen living in Alberta;
  • A job offer or work experience in Alberta; and
  • A completed credential from a Canadian post-secondary institution

Alberta’s Express Entry stream operates through the federal Express Entry system. That means that receiving a provincial nomination will increase an applicant’s CRS score by 600 points, virtually guaranteeing they will receive an  Invitation to Apply  (ITA) for PR in the next Express Entry draw.

Due to Alberta’s low CRS requirement, they are often considered one of the easiest provinces to get PR in Canada.

#3 – Ontario’s Human Capital Priorities Stream

Ontario is Canada’s most popular destination for immigrants with many newcomers drawn to the bustling city of Toronto and its growing tech-jobs sector. As such, the province has a large quota for helping newcomers immigrate through PNP streams.

Despite having one of the highest quotas among all provinces, Ontario wants to recruit even more newcomers. Ontario’s Labour Minister Monte McNaughton recently requested to double the number of immigrants allowed under the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP) from 9,000 to 18,000 to help tackle the province’s labour shortage.

For those living outside of Canada, Ontario’s  Human Capital Priorities  stream is a great option. This stream prioritizes skilled workers who will be able to fill skilled employment positions in the province.

The Human Capital Priorities also operates through the federal Express Entry system. Prospective candidates must have an active Express Entry profile with a CRS score of 400 points or higher. Ontario scans through all Express Entry profiles and invites certain profiles to apply to the PNP, typically inviting candidates based on a group of NOC codes and a certain CRS range.

In 2021, Ontario nominated a total of 3,513 candidates under their Human Capital Priorities stream. Of these nominees, about half were invited under OINP’s targeted tech draw.

Ontario also offers a PNP stream for  French-Speaking Skilled Workers  who have profiles in the Express Entry pool. If you have intermediate to advanced proficiency in French, this program may be a great option for you!

Due to Ontario’s high immigration quotas, the province holds frequent draws, making it one of the easiest provinces to get PR in Canada for qualifying candidates.

#4 – Nova Scotia’s Labour Market Priorities Stream

The province of  Nova Scotia  is located on Canada’s east coast on the Atlantic Ocean. The province’s proximity to the ocean, low cost of living, and laid-back lifestyle make it a dream destination for many prospective newcomers.

Nova Scotia’s  Labour Market Priorities  also selects candidates directly from the  Express Entry  pool. Since this stream often invites profiles without a connection to the province, it is considered one of the easiest PNPs for overseas applicants to obtain PR.

Nova Scotia does not publish the occupations or criteria that they will be targeting ahead of their  intake rounds , but regularly invite candidates with no connections to the province. Prospective nominees must have an active  Express Entry  profile and indicate their interest in Nova Scotia.

Candidates that receive an invitation from Nova Scotia may apply for the chance to secure a provincial nomination. As the stream also operates through the Express Entry system, successful nominees receive an additional 600 points toward their  CRS score . These additional points essentially guarantee an  Invitation to Apply  (ITA) in a federal  Express Entry draw .

#5 – Prince Edward Island Express Entry

The Prince Edward Island Provincial Nominee Program (PEI PNP) offers ones of the easiest pathways to Canadian permanent residency through PEI Express Entry . This nomination can enhance the chances of receiving an Invitation to Apply from the Federal Government.

To be eligible for PEI Express Entry, candidates must:

  • Meet the criteria of one of the Federal Economic Immigration programs (Federal Skilled Worker Program, Federal Skilled Trades Program, or Canadian Experience Class).
  • Create a Federal Express Entry Profile and be part of the candidate pool.
  • Demonstrate nine months of full-time work experience with a supporting PEI employer and have at least four months remaining on their work permit only if they hold a PGWP permit or a Spousal Open Work Permit.

Note: PEI will prioritize invitations for those working and living in the province with an eligible PEI employer.

To apply, applicants should read the Workforce Application Guide and create a profile in the Prince Edward Island Expression of Interest system, which remains active for six months. It is essential to keep profile information accurate and up-to-date. An Expression of Interest expresses interest but is not an application. Certain eligibility criteria exist, such as being in Canada legally.

There is no fee to create an Expression of Interest profile. But if you are invited to apply, a non-refundable fee of $300 CAD is required when submitting the Workforce Application Form. Employers must complete the PEI Workforce Job Offer Form, and applicants must complete relevant provincial forms.

Then if you are nominated, you must accept it through your MyCIC account and submit a permanent residency application with supporting documentation and fees. IRCC is responsible for permanent residency decisions. It’s crucial to notify authorities of any changes in circumstances. Candidates must maintain employment with one employer until receiving Permanent Residency status and report changes promptly.

Applying through the PEI Express Entry pathway emerges as a notably accessible option for those seeking to immigrate to Canada, particularly individuals who may have limited work experience and language proficiency. In contrast to other programs such as Quebec’s Regular Skilled Worker Program (RSWP), where eligibility often hinges on accumulating up to two years of work experience and demonstrating a high level of proficiency in both English and French languages, to obtain higher points, the PEI Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) presents a more accommodating alternative.

Which PNP is Right for You?

With more than 80 PNPs to choose from, we know that it can be difficult to narrow down which immigration program may be best for you. Since the easiest province to get PR in Canada will typically depend on your own unique profile, it can be hard to know where to start. If you would like to learn more about Canada’s PNPs or other ways to immigrate to Canada, don’t hesitate to contact us for more information!

Finding Your Path to Permanent Residency in Canada: A Guide to Choosing the Best Province for You

Are you considering immigrating to Canada? If so, you’re in for a treat! Canada is a diverse, welcoming country that is highly sought after for its quality of life, social welfare programs, and economic stability. But with ten provinces and three territories, deciding which area is best for permanent residency can be challenging.

From the rugged beauty of British Columbia to the bustling city of Toronto, from the charming maritime provinces to the stunning landscapes of the prairies, there is a perfect province for everyone. Each province has a unique character and is well-suited for different lifestyles and preferences.

In this guide, we will explore which province in Canada is best for permanent residency, taking into account each province’s advantages and disadvantages, helping you to make the best choice for you and your family. Let’s explore which province in Canada is the best for permanent residency!

What Is the Provincial Nominee Program?

Canada’s Provincial Nominee Program is an immigration program designed to help Canadian provinces and territories meet their unique economic and labor market needs by selecting and nominating skilled foreign workers to become permanent residents.

The program is administered by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada, which oversees all aspects of Canadian immigration.

The federal government runs the program, but it’s up to each province or territory to determine its criteria for selecting candidates. This means that each province has its application requirements and different types of programs available under the PNP umbrella.

The PNP has two main categories: Express Entry-linked and non-Express Entry streams.

Express Entry-linked Streams

These are PNP streams linked to the federal government’s Express Entry system. Candidates who meet the criteria for one of these streams.

Candidates selected by a province or territory will receive a Notification of Interest and can apply for permanent residency through federal express entry pool. These streams are typically faster than the non-Express Entry streams and are highly competitive.

 Non-Express Entry Streams

These streams are for those who do not qualify for Express Entry system or wish to settle in a specific province or territory. The application process for these streams is longer than the Express Entry-linked streams and can take several months.

Each province and territory in Canada has its unique PNP program, and eligibility requirements and application procedures vary. However, some general requirements apply to most PNPs, including:

  • A valid job offer from a Canadian employer, although some PNPs do not require a job offer
  • Meeting the minimum language requirements in English or French
  • Having the necessary skills, education, and work experience for the selected occupation
  • Having sufficient funds to support themselves and their family members during their initial settlement in Canada.

While the eligibility requirements may differ between the PNPs, the application process is similar for most programs. It usually involves the following steps.

  • Researching the PNP programs and selecting the most suitable one
  • Submitting an expression of interest or application to the provincial government
  • If selected, submit a formal application for a provincial nomination
  • Once nominated, apply for permanent residency through the federal government.

It’s essential to note that the selection process for PNP programs is highly competitive, and meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee acceptance.

Candidates should ensure they have all the necessary documents and qualifications to make their application stand out.

Saskatchewan

Nestled between Alberta and Manitoba, Saskatchewan is in the center of the prairies. Most people in Saskatchewan reside in the southern half of the province, particularly in Saskatoon and Regina. Agriculture is the main economic sector of the province, followed by mining, oil, and natural gas extraction.

Regina, the capital of the province, Saskatoon , and Prince Albert are the principal cities. Saskatchewan's most popular outdoor activities include fishing, hunting, and other sports. One of the most beautiful campuses in Canada is the University of Saskatchewan's historic Saskatoon campus.

About Saskatchewan's PNP

Saskatchewan's strong economic development and employment prospects have made it a popular place for foreigners to settle. Saskatchewan Immigrant Nominee Program (SINP) has two important streams: The International Skilled Worker PNP and the  Express Entry streams. They are intended to attract candidates with experience in the in-demand professions in the province. These International Skilled Worker streams use a Canadian Expression of Interest (EOI) system to select applicants manually.

Candidates who qualify for Express Entry can apply the Saskatchewan Express Entry stream to have their application for Canadian permanent residency - Express Entry applications can be processed more quickly. However, people who cannot submit an Express Entry profile can still apply through the Saskatchewan Occupations In-Demand stream.

What to expect from Saskatchewan's Occupations In-Demand and Express Entry streams

  • Candidates must have at least one year of experience in a field not on the SINP's Excluded Occupations List to submit an EOI.
  • English or French language proficiency is required, and having completed at least one year of post-secondary study.
  • Applicants who satisfy Saskatchewan's minimum eligibility requirements, including earning at least 60 points on their Points Assessment Grid, can submit an EOI profile.
  • Submitted profiles are taken into account in an EOI draw run by SINP. In SINP EOI drawings, only applicants with the most competitive SINP scores and in-demand professions are invited.

While other provinces only consider direct relatives living in the province (parents, siblings, and children), Saskatchewan counts cousins and other relatives as having family in the province and therefore proving ties to the region.

Alberta , which is in Western Canada, is home to some of the most well-liked natural attractions in the nation. The province of Alberta is well-known for its abundant natural gas and oil reserves, cattle ranching, Rocky Mountains, and Dinosaur Provincial Park.

The fourth and fifth most popular cities in Canada among immigrants are Calgary and Edmonton , respectively. Find out how Alberta's cost of living compares to Canada's Cost of Living.

By population, Calgary is the biggest city in Alberta. Calgary is a great destination for outdoor enthusiasts since it is situated in the foothills of the breathtaking Rocky Mountains. The renowned Calgary Stampede & Exhibition, one of the biggest outdoor rodeos in the world, is also held in Calgary.

About Alberta's PNP

Alberta is a significant province for potential immigrants because of its strong employment market and excellent educational system.

From the federal Express Entry pool, applicants are chosen by the Alberta Express Entry stream to submit applications for provincial nomination. The fact that this stream accepts Express Entry candidates with CRS scores as low as 300 implies that more applicants will have an opportunity to hear from the province and get a Notification of Interest.

This might improve a candidate's chances:

  • An eligible relative who resides in Alberta and is a citizen or permanent resident;
  • a job offer or employment history in Alberta;
  • and a degree or certificate earned from a post-secondary school in Canada.

The federal Express Entry program is the foundation for Alberta's Express Entry stream. A candidate's CRS score will rise by 600 points due to winning a provincial nomination, ensuring they will be offered a PR Invitation to Apply (ITA) in the upcoming Express Entry lottery.

Alberta is frequently regarded as one of the simplest jurisdictions in Canada to obtain PR due to its low CRS requirement.

Additionally, there is no precise list of jobs or occupations in Alberta. It works effectively for immigrants who have recently graduated from college or have little work experience.

About Nova Scotia's PNP

The Express Entry pool also chooses candidates directly under Nova Scotia's Labour Market Priorities. This stream is considered one of the simpler PNPs for international candidates to receive PR since it frequently attracts profiles without a link to the province.

Before its admission rounds, Nova Scotia does not disclose the industries or selection criteria it would use - although it frequently invites applicants without ties to the province. Candidates must express interest in Nova Scotia and have a current Express Entry profile to apply for  Nova Scotia's PNP .

Prince Edward Island

Prince Edward Island (PEI) is another one of the three Maritime provinces and is made up of several islands (232, including the main island), the biggest of which has the same name.

Notably, Candidates do not need a job offer from a PEI employer to submit a Canadian expression of interest. Instead, candidates who satisfy the province's existing labor needs regarding skills and knowledge will be considered for the Express Entry PNP.

What is a PNP?

Are you considering immigrating to Canada and exploring the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) as a potential pathway? The PNP is a provincial immigration program that allows Canadian provinces and territories to nominate individuals for permanent residence based on their specific economic and demographic needs.

How to Apply for the Provincial Nominee Program in Canada?

Step 1: submit an express entry profile.

The first step towards applying for the Provincial Nominee Program is to create and submit an Express Entry profile. To do this, follow the instructions on the official Express Entry website. The Express Entry system is an online application management system used for processing applications for economic immigration programs in Canada.

Step 2: Placement in Express Entry Streams

Once your Express Entry profile has been submitted, you will be placed in one of the Express Entry streams, depending on your age, education, work experience, and language proficiency. If a province or territory finds your profile suitable for their specific labor market needs, they may nominate you for the Provincial Nominee Program.

Step 3: Receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA)

If a province or territory nominates you through the PNP, you will receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residence. This ITA will be sent to your Express Entry account, where you can access it and proceed with the next steps.

Step 4: Completing the Application for Permanent Residence

After receiving the ITA, log in to your Express Entry account and follow the instructions to fill out your application for permanent residence. This application will include various forms and documents, so complete them accurately and truthfully. Be prepared to provide evidence of your qualifications, work experience, language proficiency, and other relevant information.

Step 5: Keep Track of Your Application Status

Once you've submitted your application for permanent residence, it's essential to keep track of your application status. You can do this through your Express Entry account, where you will receive updates on the processing of your application.

What Makes a Province' Easy to Get PR?'

What Makes a Province ‘Easy to Get PR?’

Provinces use Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs) to find suitable regional candidates. The PNPs have incredible benefits to both provinces that need to fill labor gaps - candidates who wish to settle in a particular province must have an in-demand skill set that the province falls short of.

According to Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultant (RCIC), David Allon , who assists clients in making their move to Canada, "The provinces have discussions all the time with the central government about the needs for human capital in their province, mainly in order to boost their economy, and according to that, they reach agreements with the central government on their PNP programs."

Additionally, 'easy' and 'hard' provinces may be subjective based on individual skills and provincial requirements. Still, there are various reasons why these five provinces are considered 'easy' to get Canadian Permanent Residency (PR) status.

With regard to the level of difficulty of getting PR, David says, "There are differences in conditions between province to province according to the specific needs of the different provinces. You can not state in an objective way what is an easy immigration program and what is hard. This depends on the profile of the candidate. One program can be very easy to one candidate but very hard to the other, and vice versa."

While many PNPs need a link to the province, such as a job offer, employment history, or educational qualification, specific programs invite people based on their capacity to meet demographic or labor shortfalls.

Generally speaking, this list covers programs that have fewer requirements, better benefits that are easily accessible, or have a large quota for inviting candidates, meaning your odds increase. However, finding out if you're eligible from the get-go is always helpful.

Easiest Province to Get PNP in Canada

As previously discussed, the notion of an "easy" province for immigration varies from person to person. However, Manitoba PNP is a noteworthy option when considering the lowest requirements.

The Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program (MPNP) has been considered relatively accessible for certain candidates due to its various pathways and lower eligibility thresholds. They have streams targeting skilled workers, international graduates, and even semi-skilled workers.

For example, the MPNP's Skilled Worker Overseas Stream and Skilled Worker in Manitoba Stream have had points-based systems that allow candidates with lower language proficiency and education levels to qualify. Additionally, their In-demand Occupations list has included occupations that may have lower educational requirements or less work experience.

Which PNP is Right for You?

Which PNP is Right for You?

The PNP you apply for depends on your skills, career, age, experience, and general eligibility. Your contributions need to match the needs of the province. You'll need to check your eligibility through a reliable source to determine which PNP you should go for. However, the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP) is a good recommendation.

The Alberta Provincial Nominee Program is one of the simplest in Canada for obtaining a nomination for Canada PR and, subsequently, the PR itself. The AAIP's Express Entry-aligned Stream extends invitations to candidates with CRS scores as low as 300.

Which Province is Easy to Get PR in Canada for International Students?

Ontario and British Columbia were among the provinces in Canada known for relatively accessible pathways to permanent residency (PR) for international students. Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP) - International Student Stream and British Columbia Provincial Nominee Program (BC PNP) - International Graduate Stream allow graduated international students to remain in the province after their studies.

How Long Does My PNP Last?

If a province, for example, Ontario, accepts your application, OINP will email you through your online account, alerting you of your nomination. To accept Ontario's nomination in the Express Entry system, you have 30 days.

You will gain 600 more CRS points for being nominated by Ontario, and Refugees, Immigration, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will invite you to apply for permanent residency. You will then have 60 days from when IRCC extends an invitation to apply to submit a permanent residency application.

Am I Guaranteed PR Through a PNP?

If a province has nominated you to immigrate to Canada and reside in a particular province, it's safe to say that, barring complications, you should receive Permanent Residency status. While nothing is guaranteed, you can increase your chances of getting PR status by gaining an additional 600 points if you get a PNP, increasing your base Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score and chances of landing in Canada significantly.

Does a Canadian PR or Citizen Need a Visa for USA?

The right answer will depend on if you are a Canadian PR or a Canadian citizen. In clear terms, if you are a Canadian citizen, you won’t need a visa for the USA unless you intend to enter the country to work, study, invest or immigrate.

Canadian citizens are only required to carry a valid Canadian passport to gain entry into the US or even transit through the country to another place. However, Canadian permanent residents are expected to apply and obtain a non-immigrant visa to gain entry into the US.

As a permanent resident of Canada, you will have to obtain a visa from the American authorities before you can be allowed into the US. To ensure you meet up and do not miss any deadlines, you must apply well ahead of the time you plan to travel.

To apply for a non-immigrant visa as a permanent resident in Canada, you will be expected to have a valid passport from your country of citizenship. If you are a citizen of a country with a visa waiver agreement, you may not be required to obtain a visa to enter the US. Currently, 40 countries are participating in the US Visa Waiver Program.

Canadian Citizens That Need a Visa for the USA

Just as was noted above, citizens do not need any form of visa to enter the United States, either from Canada or from other countries. However, Canadian citizens will need a visa for the USA in the following cases;

  • Treaty traders and investors (requires E Visa);
  • Foreign citizen fiancée (K-1 Visa), coupled with the fiancé’s children (K-2 Visa);
  • A U.S. citizen’s foreign citizen spouse moving to stay in the U.S. while awaiting completion of the process of immigration (K-3 Visa), coupled with the spouse’s children (K-4 Visa);
  • Non-immigrants moving to the United States for work (Non-Immigrant Visas), including:
  • Canadian government officials (A Visas), if going into the U.S. for temporary or permanent assignment;
  • Officials and employees of international organizations (G Visas), if going into the U.S. for temporary or permanent assignment; and
  • NATO officials, representatives, and employees, only if they are being assigned to the U.S. (as opposed to an official trip).

How to Apply for US Visa from Canada

As a permanent resident in Canada, there are necessary steps you need to take to apply for a visa to the US. These steps include;

Verify the type of US visa you need

The first thing to do when looking to gain entry into the US from Canada is to know the exact type of visa you need. There are numerous visa options available to those in Canada who are not Canadian Citizens. Take your time to know the visa you need and ensure you are eligible. Also make sure you understand the application process, coupled with the fees and required documents you need to apply with.

Know where you need to apply

When you are looking to apply for a non-immigrant US Visa from Canada, you must submit your application at the appropriate visa center approved by the US embassy. If you are applying for an immigrant US visa from Canada, then your petitioner (sponsor in the US) will have to submit your application at the National Visa Center in the United States.

Fill out the online application form

You will be expected to complete the appropriate visa application form and this will depend on the visa type you seek. Application forms differ according to the visa type you are applying for. Most often, they contain questions about personal information such as your full name, marital status, address, birth details, contact number and email, passport details, family information, education, work information, etc.

Pay the US Visa Fee Online in Canada

Once you are done providing honest and correct answers to all the questions in your application, you will have to pay the US Visa Fee Online and schedule an interview.

Note that you can pay a US visa fee in Canada online with a Credit/Debit Card, via Online Banking Transfer or Cash at Your Own Bank, or even with Cash at the right visa center. The fee you will be expected to pay will depend on the type of US visa you choose to apply for. The US Visa Fee in Canada is as follows:

  • MRV Fee – $160
  • Petition Based Applicants (H, L, O, P, Q, R) – $190
  • TN visa applicants – $460

Gather the necessary documents

At this point, you must start gathering all the necessary documents you need for your application. The exact documents you need to submit will vary depending on the US visa you are applying for and your nationality. Every visa program comes with its requirements and you must meet them to be granted entry into the country.

Collect all these documents according to their instructions. Don’t forget that the whole application process for a US visa depends on these documents. Basic documents you will need to apply for a US visa in Canada include:

  • Appointment confirmation page.
  • Confirmation page that you have filled the application form DS-160
  • Valid Passport
  • Two identical US visa photos – of 5 x 5 cm size, color, and taken within the last 6 months. Applicants who have successfully uploaded a picture to the DS-160 application form are no longer required to submit an additional photo.
  • Previous US visas (if applicable)
  • ACRO – Also known as a police certificate and you will be expected to obtain it from the authorities in your province.
  • Letter from an approved physician
  • Letter of invitation for B-2 visa applicants
  • If you have ever been denied entry into the US or deported from the country, you must also submit documents in this regard

Schedule a US visa appointment in Canada

Have it in mind that applicants below the age of 14 or over the age of 79 are not expected to show up for an interview. However, any other applicant from 14 to 79 seeking to gain entry into the USA from Canada will have to appear in person at the US consulate or embassy for the US visa interview. Applicants under 14 and over 79 are eligible to apply by a Courier. Consulates in Canada where you can go for your visa interview include:

  • US Consulate General in Calgary
  • US Consulate General in Halifax
  • US Consulate General in Montreal
  • US Consulate General in Quebec
  • US Consulate General in Toronto
  • US Consulate General in Vancouver
  • US Consulate in Winnipeg

Attend the US visa interview in Canada

First and foremost, endeavor to show up on time because if you are late, your appointment might get canceled. Make sure to come with your documents, and also arrange them properly to avoid confusion and looking untidy. Also note that the embassy/consulate staff will collect, enter and examine your application documents.

You will have your fingerprints scanned, and then you will have a short interview with a consular officer who will want to know your reason for wanting to enter the US and other questions about your trip.

Just as was noted above, Canadian citizens do not need a visa to enter the US for non-immigrant purposes, but permanent residents in the country do. Canadian and Bermudian citizens are the only nationals in the world permitted to enter the US for non-immigrant purposes without an ESTA.

However, you should check with United States (US) authorities before you try to gain entry into the US. Note that only American officials can give authentic information on visa requirements to travel to the US.
