Introduction

Adding a trip to your American Airlines account is a convenient way to keep all your travel details in one place. Whether you’ve booked a flight, hotel, or car rental, adding the trip to your account allows you to easily access and manage your itinerary, check-in for your flight, and receive important updates.

In this article, we will guide you through the step-by-step process of adding a trip to your American Airlines account. It’s a quick and straightforward procedure that can be done from the comfort of your own home or on the go.

By adding your trip to your American Airlines account, you’ll have access to your reservation details, including the flight number, departure and arrival times, and any seat assignments. You can also view and manage your boarding pass, upgrade options, and any special requests you may have made during the booking process.

Additionally, having your trip stored in your account allows American Airlines to keep you informed of any flight changes or delays, ensuring you have the most up-to-date information in one convenient location.

So, whether you’re a frequent traveler or planning a one-time trip, adding it to your American Airlines account is a smart move. It saves you time and provides peace of mind, knowing that your travel arrangements are securely stored and easily accessible whenever you need them.

Now, let’s dive into the step-by-step process of adding a trip to your American Airlines account.

Step 1: Sign in to your American Airlines account

The first step in adding a trip to your American Airlines account is to sign in to your account. If you don’t have an account yet, you can easily create one by visiting the American Airlines website and clicking on the “Sign In” or “Create Account” button.

Once you are on the American Airlines homepage, locate the “Sign In” option at the top right corner of the screen. Click on it, and you will be redirected to the sign-in page. Here, you will be prompted to enter your username and password that you used during the account creation process.

If you have forgotten your password or username, don’t worry! American Airlines provides a convenient password reset option on the sign-in page. Simply click on the “Forgot password?” link, and follow the instructions provided to regain access to your account.

After successfully signing in to your American Airlines account, you will be greeted with a personalized dashboard that displays your account information and any upcoming trips you may have already added.

Make sure to keep your login credentials secure and avoid using public or shared devices when signing in to your account. This will help protect your personal information and ensure the privacy of your travel details.

Now that you’re signed in, let’s move on to the next step and learn how to navigate to the “My Trips” page where you can add a new trip to your account.

Step 2: Navigate to the “My Trips” page

Once you have successfully signed in to your American Airlines account, the next step is to navigate to the “My Trips” page. This is where you will find the option to add a new trip to your account.

To access the “My Trips” page, look for a tab or menu option that is usually located at the top of the screen. The exact placement may vary slightly depending on the website layout, but it is typically easy to find.

Once you have located the “My Trips” tab or menu option, click on it to be redirected to the dedicated page for managing your trips. On this page, you will be able to view all the trips you have previously added, as well as add a new trip to your account.

If you are unable to find the “My Trips” page, don’t worry! Most airline websites have a search bar or a “Help” section where you can type in keywords such as “My Trips” to access the relevant page. Alternatively, you can refer to the website’s navigation guide or contact their customer support for assistance.

Now that you have successfully navigated to the “My Trips” page, you are ready to proceed to the next step and learn how to add a new trip to your American Airlines account.

Step 3: Select the “Add Trip” option

Once you have reached the “My Trips” page in your American Airlines account, it’s time to add a new trip. To do this, you will need to locate and select the “Add Trip” option.

The “Add Trip” option is usually prominently displayed on the “My Trips” page, typically in the form of a button or a clearly labeled link. Look for phrases such as “Add New Trip,” “Book a Trip,” or something similar.

Clicking on the “Add Trip” option will open a new window or page where you can enter the necessary details for your trip. This is where you will provide information such as your departure and destination cities, travel dates, and any other required details.

It’s important to note that you will need the relevant information readily available before proceeding with adding the trip. This includes your flight confirmation number, reservation details, and any additional documents or identification required for your specific journey.

Take your time to carefully fill out the required fields, ensuring that all the information is accurate and up-to-date. Double-check your entries for any errors or typos before moving forward.

If you encounter any difficulties or have any questions while adding the trip, customer support is usually just a click away. Look for a “Help” or “Contact Us” button on the page, where you can find assistance and guidance from a customer service representative.

Once you have successfully selected the “Add Trip” option and provided all the necessary information, it’s time to review and confirm your trip details, which we will cover in the next step.

Step 4: Enter your trip details

Now that you have selected the “Add Trip” option, you will be prompted to enter the specific details of your trip in your American Airlines account. This step allows you to provide accurate information to ensure that your itinerary is correctly stored and accessible.

On the trip details page, you will typically find fields to enter the following information:

  • Departure and arrival cities: Enter the names of the cities you will be traveling from and to.
  • Travel dates: Select the departure and return dates that correspond to your itinerary.
  • Flight details: Provide the flight number, if applicable, to link your trip to a specific American Airlines flight.
  • Booking reference/Confirmation number: Enter the unique code provided by your airline or travel agent to identify your reservation.
  • Passenger information: Enter your personal details, including your name, contact information, and any other required information.
  • Other travel options: Depending on your journey, you may also have the option to add extras such as seat preferences, meal choices, or additional services.

It’s essential to ensure that you enter all the information accurately, as any errors or discrepancies could impact your travel experience, including check-in procedures and receiving important updates regarding your flight.

If you encounter any difficulties or have any questions while filling out the trip details, look for help or support options on the page. American Airlines often provides tooltips or additional guidance to assist you in providing the correct information.

Once you have entered all the necessary trip details, it’s important to review and confirm the accuracy of the information before proceeding to the next step.

In the next step, we will cover how to review and confirm your trip details to ensure everything is correct and ready for your upcoming journey.

Step 5: Review and confirm the trip details

After entering your trip details, it’s crucial to take the time to review and confirm that all the information is accurate. This step ensures that your trip is correctly recorded in your American Airlines account, allowing for a hassle-free travel experience.

On the trip details confirmation page, you will see a summary of the information you entered, including your departure and arrival cities, travel dates, flight details, and passenger information.

Take a moment to carefully review each detail and ensure that everything is correct. Check for any spelling errors, incorrect dates or times, or missing information. It’s essential to verify that the information matches your booking confirmation or itinerary documents.

If you’re unsure about anything or need to make changes, most American Airlines websites will provide an option to edit or modify the trip details. Look for an “Edit” or “Modify” button next to each field or a specific section dedicated to making changes.

If you need to make substantial changes to your trip, such as changing the departure or arrival cities or modifying the travel dates, it may be better to contact American Airlines customer support directly for assistance. They can help guide you through the process and ensure that the changes are correctly made.

Once you have thoroughly reviewed and confirmed that all the trip details are accurate, you can proceed to the next step to complete the trip addition process.

In the next step, we will cover how to finalize and complete the process of adding your trip to your American Airlines account.

Step 6: Complete the trip addition process

After reviewing and confirming your trip details, you’re almost ready to complete the process of adding your trip to your American Airlines account. This final step ensures that your trip is securely stored and accessible whenever you need it.

On the confirmation page, look for a button or link that indicates the final step of the process. This is typically labeled as “Add Trip,” “Confirm,” or something similar.

Clicking on this button will initiate the trip addition process, and you will be directed to a confirmation page or receive a notification that your trip has been successfully added to your account.

At this stage, it’s a good idea to take a screenshot or print a copy of the confirmation page for your records. This serves as a backup in case you encounter any issues with accessing your trip details later on.

After completing the trip addition process, you will typically have the option to view your newly added trip in your account. This allows you to double-check that all the details are correct and that the trip is now listed among your other saved trips.

It’s important to note that adding a trip to your American Airlines account does not guarantee seat assignments or other specific requests. Some features, such as selecting seats or adding extra services, may require additional steps or fees.

If you have any specific requirements for your trip, such as seat preferences, special assistance, or dietary needs, it’s recommended to contact American Airlines directly to ensure that your needs are accommodated.

Congratulations! You have successfully completed the process of adding your trip to your American Airlines account. Your travel details are now conveniently stored and easily accessible for your upcoming journey.

Remember to check your account periodically for any updates or changes to your trip, such as gate information, flight delays, or alerts. American Airlines will keep you informed to ensure a smooth and enjoyable travel experience.

Now, you can sit back, relax, and focus on the excitement of your upcoming trip knowing that all your travel details are securely stored in your American Airlines account.

I like to travel with American Airlines

I’ve traveled a lot I own property in the States & abroad, I have say I read a complaint towards us, the passenger/customers from KLXA380 🤔I have to say I agree 100% we often treat the agents as though they are to blame for the delays, I’ve watched them being disrespected as they remain politely trying to help & also seen some act as though they own the Airport & Airline. However most of my experience has been excellent, I don’t know if it’s because I am grateful every day I am able to return home 🏡 to my babies and my dogs. If we stop & think they often delay flights 🧐for our own safety. I was actually a bit surprised the last time I flew in to BDL it snowed & my flight came through Chicago, I saw how they were dicing the plane and I have to say I was impressed & again grateful because a lot of flights were cancelled & in Miami the agent got me on a flight home 🏡 God bless that beautiful angel 😇 🥰and all the TSA agents too, I will tell you I get a little nervous when I fly and I’ve forgotten a thing or 2, a few times & they usually call me back for it. I really think they go above and beyond ant please remember they are also every day people just like us & they also go through stressful situations just like us. Do please treat them with more kindness & compassion, Thank you 🪷✈️💞

Customer complaints

I just wanted to make a note about some of the complaints about aadvantage or American Airlines I do not work for either aadvantage or American airline’s . This review is based of a logical approach and a logical opinion We as the customer have developed a “ entitled “ attitude towards the airline’s industry and as such towards society . This rule of “ the customer is always correct “ mentality is giving rise to ignorance . Just because an airline cancels a flight or delays a flight does not give you the right to berate an airline and it’s staff. We as a society are not royalty. Yet you as the passenger make yourselves out to be . Please stop Things happen . I get it . It’s an inconvenience . Hey my plans have been ruined but at the end of the day it does not give you the right to attack an airline and it’s staff just because you have been inconvenienced . We all have . Move on be polite and live to see another day . Be grateful that the airline’s are there in the first place . Just because you have had a negative experience from American Airlines immediately you state “ oh I’m Never flying them again “. Put your big boy pants on and be respectful Thank You

Just a terrible app

If you create an app that takes reservations, allow the user to go to another window on their iPhone to look and collect other information while not omitting the whole reservation that one has already inputted. I switched over to another window to look up my girlfriends tsa number, went back to the AA app, and boom. All my inputted info for my reservation was gone. Back to step one. So I go back to my credit section(because I have a flight credit), and the site allows me to book from my trip credit page. It even says trip credit at the top of the app as I’m booking my flight(for the second time). I fill everything out again, get to the payment section, and I swear to god it asks me how I will pay for it and if I will use a credit or not. Funny. I thought it would automatically add my credit since I started the whole reservation from the trip credit section. But no. It suddenly asks if I’m paying with flight credit, trip credit, or credit card. So I go back out to find out if it’s a flight or trip credit and to find the credit number. But guess what? As soon as I do that it cancels everything I’ve inputted again. How dare you allow your stupid app to treat your customers this way. You force us all to use these stupid apps because you can’t afford real life ticket agents, and then the apps are designed by complete morons so you drive all your customers insane. Thanks for making this all so easy.

How to check in for flights on American Airlines

Zach Griff

It's almost time for your flight, and there's just one thing left to do before heading for airport security. And that's packing check in. This is the process that creates your boarding pass and allows you to check your bags at the airport .

manage my trip on american airlines

You can do this formality online or at the airport, though many will prefer the convenience of the former. Either way, there are some rules to understand, so let's dive deep into checking in for an American Airlines flight .

For more travel tips and news delivered to your inbox, sign up for TPG's daily email newsletter!

How to check in online for American Airlines flights

You can check in for AA flights on the airline's website or through the mobile app. The experience is very similar, though the benefit of the mobile app is that you can generate a digital boarding pass within your mobile wallet.

manage my trip on american airlines

After locating your reservation using your six-digit confirmation number, you'll be prompted to check in at the top left corner of the reservation page.

Pressing that button will take you through the check-in process. You'll then need to agree to the hazardous materials policy. Pressing continue will bring you to the Trip Options page, where you can purchase additional miles for your trip ( don't do it; it's a bad deal ).

You'll then be brought to the seat map to select or modify your seat for your flight(s).

After you select your seats, you'll be checked in!

You then have the option of printing your boarding passes now, emailing a mobile boarding pass to your phone or saving a PDF of your boarding pass.

Rules for American Airlines flight check-in

You can check in online or using the mobile app starting 24 hours before and up to 45 minutes before departure of the first flight in your itinerary. This applies even if you have a connecting flight that's more than a day away. Note that online and app check-in closes an hour and a half before departure for international flights.

If you're planning to check bags at the airport , you need to have the bags checked at least 45 minutes prior to domestic flights and 60 minutes prior to international flights. There are some airports with exceptions to this rule, which you can find on AA's website .

Related: How to avoid checked baggage fees on major domestic airlines

Furthermore, there are some airports that won't accept checked bags more than four hours before scheduled departure. This includes:

  • Denver (DEN)
  • Fort Lauderdale (FLL)
  • Las Vegas (LAS)
  • Orlando (MCO)
  • Portland, Oregon (PDX)
  • Salt Lake City (SLC)
  • Seattle (SEA)

If the first flight of your itinerary is operating by an American Airlines partner , you're going to check in with that airline directly, and not on AA's website.

Tips and tricks to checking in for American Airlines flights

There are some things to consider when you check in for your flight. Make sure you have your confirmation number handy, especially if you're going to check in at the airport. The kiosks default to ask for that code, so this can save time.

I personally prefer to use mobile boarding passes to save paper and have one less thing to worry about misplacing. That said, you need to be sure you have your phone's battery charged for the entire trip, otherwise you'll be forced to get a physical boarding pass.

manage my trip on american airlines

Another tip about mobile boarding passes is to screenshot it after it gets created. I often find that retrieving the mobile boarding pass can be confusing when you're under pressure, so be sure to screenshot it for easy access.

Lastly, if you get an error checking in online, fear not. You may be on a military fare, have a pet or are traveling with an unaccompanied minor. Or you may be subject to the dreaded SSSS , which will be printed on your boarding pass at the airport.

Bottom line

Checking in for your American Airlines flight is exciting. That means it's almost time to take to the skies. But, there are some tips and tricks to know and some rules to follow to make it an efficient process.

Armed with this guide, you'll be ready to head to the airport in no time.
